Hall loses mind and biggest game of 2007

Mark Bradley

It was the biggest game the 2007 Falcons will play, and they lost it because their All-Pro cornerback lost his mind. An undermanned team that doesn’t figure to win many (if any) games was undone in its home opener by the guy who styles himself as a difference-maker. Feel free to laugh. Or to cry.

The Falcons fell to 0-3, the dungeon from which there’s no escape, on a day when they outgained their opponent by 129 yards, a day when Joey Harrington looked, for one of the few times in his professional life, like Joe Montana. Bobby Petrino, who hasn’t yet presided over an NFL victory, saw his game plan overridden not because of any technical or physical breakdown but because DeAngelo Hall simply had to have the last word.

We return to the scene of the whine: The Falcons led 17-10 with 22-plus minutes to play. They’d amassed 355 yards to Carolina’s 136. They should have been further ahead, but John Abraham had just sacked Jake Delhomme to force the Panthers to try a 46-yard field goal. For the Falcons, the worst that could happen was that they’d lead by four. Or so you’d have thought.

As he left the field, Hall uttered a few exit lines. A flag flew. For the third time on the possession, he had been penalized. The first was a 37-yard interference call against Steve Smith, which can happen. The next was a 15-yard personal foul for smacking Smith on a running play, which shouldn’t happen but sometimes does. The third, for unsportsmanlike conduct after a defensive stop, cannot happen. Not once in a blue moon. Not ever.

“A couple of freak plays,” Hall would say later. “They were calls that could easily have gone the other way.”

Please. This could have been the football equivalent of Eric Gregg’s double-wide strike zone and there’d be no excuse. With his third penalty, Hall changed a winning game into an eventual loss. The Panthers took their gift first down and scored the tying touchdown. Then they scored again. There have been a slew of silly moments in this franchise’s sorry history — from Aaron Brown’s personal foul before the blocked punt against the winless Colts in 1986 to Eugene Robinson’s night in Miami to Michael Vick’s dogfighting spiral — but Hall falling to pieces belongs on any short list of the absolute dumbest.

Said Warrick Dunn: “You have to try to control yourself.”

Said Lawyer Milloy: “He’s an outstanding player who was doing an outstanding job [indeed, Smith had only one catch on the day]. … I was sitting on the bench [after Abraham’s sack]. … That’s not a good feeling; it’s just extra ball. … It was a turning point, but it wasn’t a single thing that beat us.”

Wrong. This turning point begat all the plays that would ultimately yield defeat. And what sentiments, you might be asking, did Hall feel the pressing need to impart? As Smith told reporters: “They were real minute — ‘I’ve been in as many Pro Bowls as you; I make more money than you.’ Just real immature stuff. Obviously the caliber of organization the Carolina Panthers are, they don’t have a guy like that.”

Said Hall: “I’m a leader. I take responsibility for my penalties.”

Yeah, right. A leader wouldn’t have put personal glorification above the common good. A leader would have known when to shut his mouth and let the scoreboard talk for him. A leader wouldn’t have then snapped at his coach, who was understandably upset and who should by rights have benched Hall for the rest of the game. Hall led, all right. He led a team that needs to win in the worst way to defeat — in the worst way. He made a difference, all right.

Said Petrino: “You cannot have that [meaning Hall’s penalties] happen when you’re in position to win a game.”

It took three weeks for these Falcons to reach even that modest point. It took one man two seconds to chuck it away. DeAngelo Hall? Call him MeAngelo Hall.

If Deangelo Hall played as well as he talks, he’d be a shoo-in Hall of Famer.

But, as it is, he’s the most overrated, overpayed cornerback in the league.

Yes, Hall shouldn’t have let Smith get to him like that, but I am not so sure I believe those penalties should have been called. I rarely agree with Fox broadcasters, but this is football, and Hall just went and jacked Smith in the chest… during a play. Are you not allowed to hit at the line of scrimmage anymore? It was a run play, if Smith had hit Hall like that, it would have been encouraged. Then, he got called for jawwing with Smith. If that were a penalty, Neon Deion would have led the NFL in penalty yards every year. The pass interference was either going to be a TD or 37 yard penalty, so no problem with that in my eyes.

Yes, they needed this win. Yes, Hall’s antics cost them, even if 2 flags should not have been thrown. But Hall’s play (except for the 2nd half today) is going to be one of the few bright spots for this team, so give him a break.

As crazy as it sounds, I think new coach has a better handle on this team than the old one had last year when we were winners of the first handful of games. I don’t see this coach as being one that will allow his team to make the same mistake over and over again.

Let me close with Go Braves. Great come back win today. Now let’s beat the Phils. One game at a time.

Joey got up off the deck with a great performance. Too bad the whole team’s effort was wasted with an egomaniac playing corner who was utterly dominated by a better player. Petrino has had some bad luck and deserves better, however he has to take a stand on this embarrassment.I don’t see that he has a choice.

More BS from the AJC.

The two personal fouls were obviously bogus calls.

Sorry Hall, but you are the next target for the AJC and the bigots that follow this team.

This game was lost by DeAngelo Hall simple as that. Until he lost his mind the falcons had stopped carolina and atlanta had control of the pace of the game. Joe played a good game don’t put the blame on him.

I have been calling this idiot MeAngelo Hall for three years, because like every single one of Frank Beamer’s Virginia Tech Thugs, he only cares about his damn self.

I’m gonna be the best. I’m gonna make the Pro Bowl. I I I. Me. Me. Me.

What a selfish SOB he is.

I hope the Falcons suspend his thug @$$ and then trade him to Seattle so he can get back with his best friend, Little Jimmy Mora, who helped to create the monster we have to deal with right now.

We need more draft picks. Trade his selfish @$$ to Seattle for a first rounder, because they’re going to the Super Bowl from the NFC, so they won’t mind giving up the 31st pick. Until they get MeAngelo and find out the kind of THUG he really is.

Eff you, MeAngleo Hall. You’re overrated. You suck. And you’re done in Atlanta. Go and hang out with your THUG friends up in VA in a couple of weeks so the Falcons can get play players who actually care about the team.

You piece of $hit!

The personal fouls were kinda stupid on DFall but the pass interference was pure Eisnstein. He saved a touchdown dummies. Hall gave up a few yards but Highway 56 (your hero Keith Brooking) should wear a ‘G’ on his shirt instead of a C for Gateway to the endzone.

You people got what you wanted, a 300 yard passing high QB rating player instead of a guy that could carry these LOSERS. They are who we thought they were without Vick. LIVE WITH IT! Joey looked like Jeff George today, short passes with decent YAC, alot of stats, and the customary FALCONS “L”! Hahaha!

Hall messed up, but our run defense got killed. Other than the penalties, Hall actually kept Smith in check. The offense came together so Joey Harrington lives to play another week. I think if the offense continues to progress and Hall plays without talking, Falcons could be 10 and 6- wishful thinking though.

At the end of the day D. Hall is still the best cover corner on the Falcons roster. His actions today must be addressed, but I certainly don’t think he should be benched.

I thought the most critical play was that 3rd down Harrington couldn’t convert early in the 3rd quarter that resulted in a 3 & out and put the Falcons winded defense back on the field.

D Hall pretty much shut down steve smith today and thats not easy to do, the two penalty’s were bs. Just your typical NFL officials. They make the game less enjoyable every year. They called the whole game to carolinas advantage

Today’s game was filled with bogus penalties and blatant non calls. The zebras can’t always get it right but they stunk today. You pretty much have to bang Steve Smith at the line on every pass play or he will eat you up. Since when is trash talking a penalty? And if it is I’m sure Smith was guilty as well. I counted at least two late hits on Harrington that were not called. I also wonder why we got away from throwing the ball down the field. That’s just stupid. Also on our last drive we burned half of the remaining clock down by two possessions. Gotta work on that. All in all a good game until we lost.

Might be a good time to go get a MLB.

How many games are we going to see Brooking get burned, blocked down and beaten before we do something?

sure he’s got great heart, he hustles, I love that, but making 150 tackles after 7 yard gains doesn’t help the team win many games.

Lets be honest here….

The offense has played as well as i’ve seen a falcons offense play even with Vick.

But the defense in the 2nd half played their customary badly. The defense simply cannot match up well with power runners..

But Deangelo took the cake.. He killed all the momentum the Birds had. The pass inter. call… fine. But those dumbA$$ calls after that.. esp the UC call. Oh my god… My demeanor changed after that and I knew we were in trouble.

The only reason he wasnt benched at that point was that they knew they have no real replacement for him. They probably need to bench him / fine him or move him down the depth chart for one game to punish him.

Let’s face it.. hes a solid CB. Is he the top 3 shutdown corner that the national media makes him out to be? Hell no… I remember Ray Buchanan making more significant plays for the Birds early in his career there in a game than what DeAngelo does.

My problem with D. Hall is this. Talking noise on the field is fine.. TO does it. Chad does it. But if u do that, BACK IT UP. He consistently lets WRs beat him.. And he’s one of the fastest guys in the league? I dont know why he went off like that on Smith but it wasnt justified AT ALL. He needs to publicly apologize for this.. and for mouthing off to the coaches.

The first personal foul was supposedly a shot to the head - if the shoulder pads suddenly are Steve Smith’s head then I need to go back to Biology 101. The second foul was supposedly a remark at the official - DHall was never looking at the official and you know that Steve Smith was making that a two-way conversation. The officials penalized Atlanta 10 to 3 versus Carolina. Atlanta did not lose to Carolina, it lost to the refs and DHall did not lose the game, he was just the unfortunate victim of flag-happy refs with some kind of bias against Atlanta (dog-lovers getting back for Vick?).

Same old Falcons. Never had any discipline. Never will. Other organizations do not tolerate such things. This episode is just like Vick’s last year with the fans. Steve Smith did not even need to catch a ball to win the game. He knew what buttons to push.

The biggest problem with DeAngelo is that he is not even close to as good as he thinks he is.

By DaFalcons

September 23, 2007 10:42 PM | Link to this

I love how people want to blame others for their mistakes - these are the same people who believe that THE MAN wants to keep them down. Think the calls were BS? Maybe the the first call on DHall could have gone either way…but the second and third? if you think those were BS then you are as big a loser as DeAngelo(w).

I say bench him - if we’re going to lose then so should his stats… Atheletes need self-confidence to perform their best (everyone needs that) but that was rediculous.

And what about the sideline crap - poor taste. That isn’t Jim Moron (oops, Mora) over there… I say fine him and bench him.

Everyone screws up, some people screw up big time. Let’s just call it, and him, for what they are. Fine him, bench him, but let’s move on. If we can find a way to replace him at some point fine - if that’s what they want to do but something reasonable should be done.

By the way, did that remind anybody of Jeff George?????

It is unbelievable that Mr. Mouth…a la Ray Buchanan, is still on the team. He should be cut, released now. His attitude is rotten for the entire team. It’s time for some discipline by this new all business coach. If Falcons are going to lose all their games, do it without the likes of an absolute idiot who cares nothing for the team, but only about his own sick ego…like a few other Virginia Tech x’s. I’d rather see them lose without that sort of crap for players. I can turn my TV off and I can never see another game if this is what we have to watch. and this will be my choice if he continues. If players can’t play by the rules owners ought to close the NFL. To continue with sort of junk is an absolute disgrace to the human race and especially to all black players who appose this stuff. You black guys who play hard and honor the rules need to slap some sense into this idiot. He is a disgrace to anybody who tries to play a good game and have fun. He should not be tolerated. If the coach won’t discipline him the players should. Step up you honorable ones! Here is your chance to let everybody know what real men are! I love Falcons who do it right, but I will not stick with them if this continues.

Why didn’t Coach P take D Hall out after the second penalty? Couldn’t he see that Hall had lost his focus entirely. Other bloggers have said ‘D Hall only let Smith get 1 catch for 10 yards’,but he actually gave up alot more on penaltys. Those yards have to be added in. And why were we so hesitant in second half? WE were super aggressive 1st half and then we seemed to back off quite a bit. P.S. Don’t bring up Con Vick anymore—-He is gone by his own stupidity. GET OVER HIM! TAKE MEDICATION IF YOU HAVE TO. As a true fan I don’t give a s**t who passes the ‘rock’ as long as we win(or in Falcons case -play better). I do have to give props to Coach and team for playin a helluva lot better. I have no respect for D Hall for losing it—maybe he needs meds too.

I have no problem with the NFL adopting a “clean” mouth attitude but they need to announce it rather than just suddenly have refs decide to start enforcing it at their will and pleasure. And, if you think that DHall has a filthy mouth, I guarantee you would be just as surprised at the conversations occurring at the line of scrimmage that the refs cannot hear.

DeAngelo was one of the main reasons this game was close. He locked Steve Smith down all day. If not for the BS calls, the Falcons hold them to a FG (twice in that same drive).

Most Falcons fans are just idiots and want any decent player run out of town, simply because they don’t like how they look or how they “come off” to them.

Yes, Virginia Tech has it in for the Falcons. We all take a class as freshmen about how evil Arthur Blank is, how awful Home Depot is, and think about ways we as a school can make one of the historically worst franchises in the NFL even WORSE.

But wait, don’t the Falcons draft these guys? Not all Hokies in the pros fight dogs or run their mouths, just the ones Rich and Co. draft.

By steve

Arthur Blank is presiding over too many thugs and character issues. He pays guys like Vick and Hall way too much money and then when their character flaws kill the team, the franchise is on the hook and the cap is a mess. The Falcons are a terrible football team, their defense is horrendous. They need a better offensive line and almost an entirely new defense. They also need to play Norwood more than Dunn because the tide has shifted in the favor of Jerious. Hall is a big mouth idiot that somehow thinks if he talks it makes him a great player. Even if the calls were questionable, why does he keep flapping his gums? Just shut up and play. He has to constantly remind everyone how great he is…I’m tired of his type and the team should stop drafting questionable character guys. Enough. This team needs an overhaul not a tune up. Petrino has to wonder what he got himself into right now. But the Falcons need to start from scratch and maybe they can rid themselves of head cases like Hall. No, this isnt a racial issue. I’m not sure why ANYONE would back Hall after this situation. Right is right, wrong is wrong, and chararcter is not a Black or White issue. Why is that so hard to understand?

I was watching the game, and the penalties on Hall SHOULD have been called. It was bush league at best. Amatuer bs in a professional league. DHall did NOT go up and hit Steve Smith after the whistle or hit him in a dangerous place. The Falcons played a great game and I thought DeAngelo Fall played a great game up to that point. As a cornerback, you really have to keep your head in the game. I wouldnt say he lost his mind, but the calls probably cost the Falcons the game. I was at the game, and he was beat, so I dont fault him for tackling Smith. The second penalty was totally bogus. It was a little uncalled for, but Hall made a football mood, he basically jammed him at the line, he jabbed the guy at the line. Last time, I checked it was legal to hit a guy in the chest with your hands. It was a totally bad call. And not to condone Deangelo actions, the same referree made at least 5 penalites on the Falcons, even a couple of calls when he was at least 15 yards from the play.

I agreed with the commentators in that the calls were bogus. I wish that others could see that. As a graduate of a north Georgia high school, I spent 14 years in Texas before coming back to the southeast last year. I see that it will be another long year for the Falcons. I also followed the Houston Texans through their ups and mostly downs. I know what the articles will be like this week with Schaub coming. Anyway, consider these. One cannot blame Michael Vick for the team’s performance on the field. And as a person who sees a glass as half full, I am looking at Atlanta having a top five pick in the next draft. I have to call things as I see them.

I guess we can only critique the White guys. There aren’t many of them but we better just criticize them because you can’t critique a Black man. Some just can’t take it. We can’t look at Hall’s actions as being just incredibly stupid, we have to remember that he is Black so we have to keep quiet. If a Black man commits a felony like Vick, shhh, he is Black we can’t say anything. If Hall does something as dumb as anything I’ve ever seen on a field, shhh, be quiet, can critique a Black man. There has to be a racial component to everything right? I’m going to tell all Black people the simple truth right now so listen up because you need to hear this: I will tell you that 99% of all criticism that is directed at a ballplayer is not even remotely racist, it’s based on performance. Plain and simply it’s about what happens good or bad on the field. When Joey Harrington plays a bad game he hears it from all fans, white and black. Why can’t we call out a man when he stinks because he is black? That makes sense? A man can never have true equality until you are willing to take the heat. It’s not all about getting the accolades, it’s about taking the heat when the heat is on. Hall isn’t being mutilated on here because he is black…he is being criticized because he lost his head and cost his team. White people are allowed to call that out whether you like it or not.

Credit this loss to D Hall. One penalty for pass interference okay, smack a guy around, get caught, not good, but shows some agressiveness, but 3rd penalty after forcing a punt is just plain stupid. If this was a rookie,he would have been removed from the game. You would make sure he understands this can’t happen again, but a Pro Bowl veteran player, this should never happen, Never!!! 3 straight penalties for 60 - 70 yards to steal the momentum from your team! What a waste, Harrington had a career day going, just took the wind from underneath their wings! Then he misses a tackle on Smith in the forth when we are trying to get the ball back….way over-rated. Let’s see if Matt Scrab will be afraid to throw in his direction, after practicing with him the past few years, I doubt our former 2nd string quarterback will shy away from his side of the field. So, in the annals of Atlanta sports history, was our derision over Rocker’s bombastic and idiotic histrionics racism? Was the ultimate choker, Mark Wohlers, black? How about Jon Koncak, perhaps the most joked-about and mocked Hawk ever? Pretty sure that he was blond-haired and blue-eyed. When the entire city wanted to run the loud-mouthed quarterback who argued with coach out of town, was that one Jeff George also the “black guy”?

The fact is, if there is any bias in Atlanta, it’s against the egotistic, self-centered, loud-mouthed, braggadocios - in any sport. D-Hall is perhaps the most arrogant, self-promoting, me-centered athlete in the city. Perhaps he’d be a better fit in another town.

What a lot of scapegoating here. There was a botched field goal, weak run defense, poor clock management, lousy officiating, but most folks here want to talk about one guy, and one series.

Did you watch the game, or just see the highlight reel?

D-Hall is the most overrated player in the NFL. After getting burned by TO and Ocho Cinco he still has the nerve to talk trash like he’s a superstar. He gets burned as bad as Charles Dimry used to. He and Smith spent so much time talking they forgot they were playing football. Trade D-Hall now so the Falcons can start rebuilding!!!!

I can’t believe all the idiots on this board that obviously were watching a different game than I was. The intereference call was the ONLY flag that was justifiable. THe two peresonal fouls were absolutely ridiculous calls and the refs should be investigated for it! Since when can a CB not jam at the line and on a run play no less?!?! Since when do you flag one guy for jawing and not the other guy (the “Saintly” Steve Smith……yeah right)?!?! Idiots, check the stats! Smith was SHUT DOWN the entire game by Hall! How on earth does that equate to no talent?!?! Sure he’s selfish! He’s even an a* for sure. But who cares? He is NOT overrated but in fact is one of the finest cover corners in the league (certainly top 5). Good God, this team has too little talent as it is without you football-ignorant morons calling for another benching of our best defensive player!

I’m a black guy… said for years that DeAngelo’s hot head was going to cost us… Today it did.

I also knew that the word “thug” would be uselessly peppered in the complaints on this vent, a word conspicuously absent from the Jeremy Shockey complaints, because he’s more of a THUG than DeAngelo Hall ever will be… And yes, he costs his team games too. Know what people say?”

“His heart’s in the right place. He’s just fiery… I like that.”

Mark Wohlers got passes because everyone knew he was going through personal issues… I think the problem people have with black athletes is that they treat them like their the same person… I.E., if O.J. Simpson does something terrible and gets off, blame Ron Artest, because he’s black so it’s like he’s the guy who did it. years later it’s “Mike Vick’s going to get off just like the blacks let OJ off…” Black athletes are all different.

The calls on DHall did cost us the game, but the ref was at least as out of line as he was. Two calls in a row that should have been no=calls. The first could have been an honest mistake, but the second was just a referee injecting himself too much into the game.

“The Falcons fell to 0-3, the dungeon from which there’s no escape” I believe the 96 Chargers were 0-4 before going to the superbowl that year. I’m not saying that’s likely to happen but everyone loses hope so quickly. The most I expected was to be competitive and that’s at least what i’ve seen.

Some of you guys comments are crazy. Most if not all good cornerbacks have the kind of mentality DeAngelo has. It’s where their confidence comes from. He basically shut Smith down today, he just has to learn how to control himself. I like my players playing with emotion. There was alot of b.s. calls today. Hall is one of the best corners in the league and as far as him being a thug????? That’s a racist profiling comment. Bottom line he needs to control himself. That was the only thing wrong with his game today. If we trade him who will we have or who will we get???

By PantherFan

As a Panther fan, I thought the Falcons out played the Panthers for most of the game. D-Hall was burned by Smith, but did a SMART thing but getting the pass int call. I too think that the two pesonal fouls on him were a little ticky tacky. Don’t get me wrong, I think he is an arrogant a$$, but all in all, he is a great cover corner. But, he has to have the smarts to walk away in that situation. The chuck on Smith could have been a no call, however, the ref could have felt that the intentions were more than a defensive move. Secondly, without being able to hear what Hall was saying on the other call, one can’t assume that he was only “singing Kumbaya”. Without knowing, he could have said something that warrented the flag. Either way, Hall has to know that the situation is heated and walk away. Bottom line, up until that point, the Falcons completely outplayed the Panthers. Our vaunted D-Line was managed well by your O-Line, and Joey picked apart our weaka$$ secondary. This shouldn’t be about black and white. It’s about playing like a professional, and D-Hall didn’t do that today.

yeah the calls sucked for the falcons—yeah the pass interference was actually a “great” play—because when you get burned that badly—saved a touchdown. Yes the calls were kind of over the top at best—but come guys—thank god—we want to be 0-16. We NEED the top pick—not because the falcons are going to use it—no they will trade it away for a lower pick and a bunch of 0 line and d line help. The falcons are not that good—they have alot of issues that need to be addressed. D hall and the refs cost the falcons the game—thank god. I love the falcons—want them to do well—but whats 7 and 9 or 6 and 10? If they are going to lose most of the year—lose ALL year. Are the falcons two or three years away from being a contender in the NFC south—not superbowl bound—not NFC championship game bound—just when do you think we can win the NFC south? Looks like Car was suppose to be the real solid team with the saints being the top of the divison and possibly the nfc—now the bucs look like they are back and the falcons showed the panthers have gotten really old—even still I don’t think the falcons will be good enough even after next year to be a factor in the nfc south much less anything bigger than that. I like Harrington and what he did today—but it seems like even when he does well—its by the skin of his teeth—like he is lucky or something. I have rooted for the falcons all my life—and will continue still. I hope for a fun and excieting season—be in all the games and just find a way for d-hall or someone else to give the game away—retool over the winter with the vick rebate—and in a couple of years be solid from top to bottom.

Every week you people need a scapegoat. Of course DHall should be more careful so he can avoid those types of penalties. And he should be fined for his insubordination for yelling at the coaches and making a scene. But all it amounts to is one inexcusable penalty— there’s going to be an unsportsman-like conduct called every game against someone, this just happened to be at a really bad time. How about some perspective here? We don’t need to trade him, we need to make it clear to him that the next personal foul like this will get him benched.

The real goats in this game were the D line. The Panthers were running at will. Also, we had too many other penalties aside from DHalls. Remember that holding penalty that brought back the Norwood return?

It seems this D-Hall situation could turn into the Vick debate 2007-08 all over again.Just about every poster has commented on Hall but I have yet to see Malloy or Brooking mentioned anywhere for there horrible play. The game was not over after those penalties. But it was over when Foster ran over Malloy and through Brooking the rest of the game. That missed tackle by Chauncey Davis should warrant him being cut and the falcons resigning Carrington.

White(Brooking) and black(Malloy & D Hall) players had bad games. You add them together and you have a horrible defensive unit with no grit or toughness in the clutch. How many times can Malloy get ran over or Brooking get beat covering and not be able to shed blocks to make a play at the line of scrimmage before falcons fans realize those issues are very important as well?Or will D-Hall give this guys a pass just as the Vick situation did with the o-line and defense?

We are so busy argueing race many are not realizing the leaders on the defense are old and thier skills are deteriorating. Week 6 Daren Stone should start in place of Malloy because the falcons must access thier young talent. Tony Taylor must be givin a shot as well at some point so the falcons will know exactly who to draft or sign in free agency. Change is a cumin!!!!!!!

Well written piece, thanks for your open and honest evaluation. The self-proclaimed “Leader” of the Falcons defense presented an elaborate display of his selfishness, his lack of maturity, his self-centered mentality, his inability to cover a receiver, and his unwillingness to make physical contact whenever contact can be avoided. Maybe Blank should give DeAngelo Hall a cape to complete his matador moves on the football field!

This is too funny. Y’all arguing over who is the biggest million dollar crybaby.

The NFL should follow “professional” wrestling’s lead and start calling itself “sports entertainment.” It’s a far more accurate description.

Colleges sign these morons, who have no business on a college campus without a mop and broom in hand, and let them play until they can bolt to the NFL. The NFL gives these immature idiots millions and then acts surprised when they inevitably do something stupid on (Hall) or off (Vick) the field.

Face it, this is not your father’s NFL.

The pass interference play was a smart play, but looked like Smith did what you try to do, take your opponents head out of the game. It looked like Hall said to his coach on the sideline “What would you do if he said that to you?” Instead of focuing on the game, he focused on his ego, which was what Smith wanted.

I am old school so I do not understand the relationship between playing the game and trash talking. I grew up watching defensive backs like Herb Adderley and Cornell Greene smother receivers and if they did talk, did not draw the attention to themselves or be so demonstrative about it.

When a player feels it is more important to save face rather than win the game, what does it say about the state of the game.

This is what ProFootballtalk.com is reporting:

HALL BEAT UP IN FALCONS LOCKER ROOM?

There are uncorroborated rumors making the rounds that Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall was beat up, presumably by one or more teammates, following a Falcons loss that was fueled in part by Hall’s inability to control his emotions.

After being flagged for a total of 37 yards on a second-half drive that the Panthers used to tie the game, Hall got into a sideline confrontation with coach Bobby Petrino.

We don’t know for sure whether Hall was indeed roughed up or otherwise accosted by teammates after the game, but it wouldn’t surprise us to find out that the rumor is true. Hall is a brash and outspoken member of the organization, and his Virginia Tech ties to Mike Vick probably have prompted some in the locker room to view him differently in the wake of Vick’s legal troubles. Today’s actions would have potentially been enough to get a frustrated Falcon to convert hostile feelings toward Hall into action.

A child in a man’s body. The kind of bravado we’ve seen so many times in Hall is a weakness, an immaturity, not intrinsically, but because what follows it is a complete emotional breakdown when he gets beaten on the field. I’ve seen this phenomenon so many times, especially on basketball courts. A guy tries to pump himself up, blow himself up real big, then when he gets beaten, either he deflates completely or loses his temper. How about some professional therapy for DH, Arthur?

The interference call was a good one to take. The second call was wrong. He should have shut up after that but he kept yaking and that thrid penalty cost us the momentum and the game. This is another guy who thinks he is above the team and the game and I am ready to trade him now.

Why are their racial posts on this? Several comments above what to make excuses for Hall by dumping on Brooking and Harrington? This is about a cornerback. If I was John Abraham, I would have killed him after all the work he did that was great.

Yes D. Hall lost his cool but what about all those running plays that our defense could not stop. It was embarrasing to watch three of our players being carried into the end zone by one of their running backs. The offensive play calling in the third quarter was terrible. This team must pass to set up the run. Bobby Petrino does not have control of his team. The lack of discipline is worse now than it was when Mora was here. You would not see the kind of outburst by D. Hall on the Patriots or the Colts. He would be out of the game. THREE DIFFERENT COACHES - SAME RESULT.

I would agree that DeAngelo Hall’s lack of composure helped the Falcons lose; however, the Panthers only TIED the game with the subsequent touchdown!! The D still had a chance to make a play and stop the Panthers’ drive.

We (I’m a Falcons fan) had consecutive three-and-out possessions following the touchdown. We allowed David Carr (wearing church usher gloves) to move the ball down the field after Delhomme’s injury. We couldn’t stop DeShaun Foster w/13 men on defense, especially on the last drive. Joe Horn (another big talker) dropped a touchdown pass that he knows he should have caught.

D. Hall’s ego is clearly over-blown. He’s a better-than-average corner who thinks he is a future HOF’er (and he’s not). However, he cannot be made to be the scapegoat of the game.

BTW, if John Abraham keeps playing the way he is, he will be the Defensive Player of the Year!!

We need to stock up on picks for next season. Hall will never resign in Atlanta(thank god). Trade him now while he still has some value. And send Jimmy Williams with him. Obviously the talent coming out of VT is overated and undisciplined.

I thought the Falcons were playing an excellent game during the first half. Harrington was on target and efficient in making third down conversions. The defense appeared to be able to control the offense. Then, with the Falcons leading the game, MeAngelo has a total meltdown.

I don’t care to watch a grown man pitch a tantrum —- particularly, a tantrun that causes the team to lose its momentum and focus.

The reality is that the team was focused —- but, MeAngelo cannot stand it unless he is the entire focus. If Patrino doesn’t find a creative way to get Hall’s attention, he’s going to lose the respect of the team.

I’m really not overly concerned with the three defeats. Building on the good performance Sunday, we should see some real progress if the team will play disciplined football.

I am not a big D-Hall fan, but the NFL official made bush league calls on the two personal fouls charged to Hall. The officiating should be criticized more than the player, in this case. In the heat of the battle, players have to be extended latitude to emote. It’s too easy to jack D-Hall, which seems to be the focus of frustrated observers who disguise themselves as football fans.

You guys are right….it’s such a shame that Vick isn’t going to be here to lift this team up to 6-10 or 7-9. This whole Vick debacle is typical….a microcosm of the A/A community. It shows that—just like everything else—it’s all about style over substance for some people in this community. Just like having a piece of s** car with thousands of dollars worth of rims and stereo equipment (while paying your rent and bills late, if at all, every month). The bottom line is that your car is still a piece of s**.

Similarly, they don’t give two s** about football or the Falcons. They just want to see a brother make a flashy run or two every few games. I mean…it certainly didn’t win us many games…so when I keep hearing you people moan about how much better things would be with Vick here, that’s the only thing I can assume.

how many catches did steve smith have? 1 for 10 yards. i think hall did his job just fine. Joe Horn dropped a game tying TD pass and there was a failed FG conversion in the first half. Didn’t those plays contribute to the loss as well? Or is it just Hall’s fault for shutting down the best WR in football.

Laugh or cry? I’ll laugh. Because Hall is just another in a long line of Falcons players with no class. Now that the true poster-boy for the team—Michael Vick—is gone, he’s been replaced by another showboating thug with more of a temper and a big mouth than talent. He is quintessentially Atlanta, and quintessentially a Falcon. You get what you deserve.

MeAngelo reminds me of that dork in high school that wants attention. The type of guy who gives HIMSELF a nickname. “Hey guys! I’d like to think of Warrick Dunn as the face of the franchise. He didn’t ASK for it. He simply is by virtue of his unslefish actions, team play and conduct on and off the field.

I will take DeAngelo any day with the way he played Smith yesterday. Yes, the penalties hurt, but two of them were not deserved. When did you ever see a good defensive back who did not run his mouth? The Falcons need fire and DeAngelo stepped up and provided it.

Why isn’t someone giving credit to the offensive line who gave Hearington all the time in the world. The Falcons played a quality game yesterday against a quality team. The intensity was high for both teams and the play was even better. If you are going to lose, then lose like this. If the Falcons play with the same intensity over the next few weeks, then they are going to beat some teams.

Worst officiated game this season. The league should suspend the crew that called this game. Let the players play ball! I was glad to see some heart from D. Hall. For years, you same whiners have been complaining about the Falcon d-backs and their inability to shut down good receivers. Now we have a shut down corner and you beat him up for playing too aggressively. Hall saved a touchdown on the interference call and the ref who called the other two penalties should go back to recreational league football calling games for 10 year olds. Cudos to the offense for doing their part and for a two great kickers. If Hall and Abraham can get some help on defense and our special teamers learn how to block w/o holding/blocking in the back, we just might have a good football team. Note to the coaching staff — look in the mirror before blaming any of your players for the loss. You got conservative in the 2nd half yesterday and it cost you the game. At Louisville, you would have kept playing agressively until you had 50 points. Dont do like Spurrier and forget how to coach just because you are now in the NFL.

I don’t know if I was more upset at the penalty then to see this selfish individual get in the coaches face. I wanted to come to the dome and choke that guy. Once it was over I failed to see anyone step up. I expected them to be upset and take that anger out on the panthers. Instead I choked watching D.Foster gash up the middle of our defense. Hall almost held out for m ore money this past off-season. He didn’t do it ostensibly for the good of the team.

He is going to hold out. In either 2008 or 2009, Hall is going to hold out for money. Falcons should expect it to happen. Ego and money seem to be all he cares about.

Because of this, and because of the fact that he is an average DB, the Falcons need to trade him before the trade deadline. This season appears lost anyway, why not get something for Hall while they can?

To say that MeHall did a good job shutting down Steve Smith is a farce. From my view point in the dome, you can tell that Delhomme never looked in 89’s direction…why? The secondary was always shifted to back MeHall up in covering Smith. That left plenty of one-on-one coverage on the opposite field for the other side of the line as well as an open middle field for the TE who had a ton of yards.

MeHall is a professional and should have been satisfied with the stop. If you watched him all game, he was making cheap shots, get jawwing and constantly complaining to the refs. You are never going to get the calls if you are a constant pain.

Should be benched for Houston. Trade him at the end of the year.

I love my fellow Falcons fans. No matter what our players do, it’s always someone else’s fault. I’m a from the same kind of “hood” as some of these players and it’s quite insulting to me when people have lower expectations for them because of that. BUT, that’s exactly what we do for our players who we don’t seem to want to hold accountable for their actions. Oh yeah, Steve Smith didn’t need any catches to win the battle with DeAngelo Hall. He took him out of his game and made him want to play the Panthers all by himself. Smith made at least 5 blocks on Hall during the game that sprung big runs so Smith ultimately won the battle because his TEAM won the game. Hall should become a boxer since he’s in it for the individual glory. Oh yeah that’s right, T.O. spit in his face last year and he didn’t do anything so that probably wouldn’t work either.

DeAngelo Hall is waaaaay overrated. He has not done anything to deserve his mythical standing as a NFL d-back. Just because he is fast and can talk crap does not help a team. I am not sure what people see in him. He had a good game until the meltdown, but look at the game film of the last 2 years and see the truth. He is average as a cover corner, point blank.

The really sad part about D Hall is that he has all the physical skills to be as great as he THINKS he is. Unfortunately for him (and the Falcons) he does NOT have the mental and emotional skills to play the game. While he held Smith to one catch, SMITH OWNED HIM PSYCHOLOGICALLY. He got into Hall’s head so bad that he could not/would not even think about the GAME, all he could think about was getting even with Smith. Hall is not a team player, he is a player on a team. Somebody on the coaching staff better read him the riot act or this WILL happen again. If there are any “leaders” on this team, they need to take control NOW.

I don’t care what nobody says, if we had Vick he could have gotten the momentum back. Joey did great, but he isn’t Vick. Hell, we would be 3-0 if we had Vick.

DeAngelo’s 2nd personal foul penalty was ridiculous and it certainly had a HUGE impact on the game but he actually played VERY well. If someone had told me that Steve Smith would have finished with one catch for 10 yards, I would have thought they were crazy.

DeAngelo is extremely talented and he showed that talent yesterday. What he needs to work on more than anything is the mental part of his game. There have been SEVERAL incidents over the years where he has let his emotions take him out of the game. This is just the latest example. Hopefully, his mentor Deion Sanders will give him a call and help him see the light.

All that said, anyone who thinks that he should be cut or traded is CRAZY. A team full of choir boys is not going to win JACK! This is football, the NFL - not church! TALENT wins in this league.

In addition, there is enough blame to go around. Inability to stop the run is what lost this game because Smith was effectively neutralized. Blame Teflon Boy Keith Brooking for being the most overrated linebacker in football. Just ONCE, I want to see him meet the RB in the hole and see the RB go backward rather than Brooking getting ran over and dragged for 3 yards before he makes the tackle. Brooking does have a lot of character though.

This is just too much. Now some of you same Vick defenders are now defending DeAngelo Hall?! Let me ask you, had this been Adam Archuleta or John Lynch, would you still defend them? Oh I forgot. This is Atlanta where people are judged by their skin color, and not their actions.

Seems like both of our last picks from V-Tech ended upp being a bunch of overrated, overpaid, selfish thugs that do not understand the concept of being a team. Take a look back when Vick broke the record for most rushing yards in a season by a QB. They were in a position to win the game late, and Vick celebrated his own accomplishment right in the middle of it. Now this fool comes out and only thinks of himself at a critical point in the game. Yes, he IS a thug along with Vick. If you people would learn how to use a dictionary and look up the word “thug”, then you would see that he is. Bench him because this guy isn’t 1/10 of the player Deion Sanders was.

DeAngelo Hall and Michael Vick, why are relatively recent former VT players so undiscliplined to the point of harming their NFL team(s)? In contrast, other former VT players in the past, such as Bruce Smith, have done great things in the NFL without being involved in silly extra-curricular activities on and off the field.

Sorry Mark, I get as frustrated with Hall as everyone else, especially when he’s not playing well.

But neither one of those penalties should have been called. Its easy to take a myopic view and think “they were called and its his fault”.

But the fact of the matter is that the first personal foul was absurd. That was nothing more than a clean football play.

The 2nd personal foul call was just as bad. I’m not sure how that referee can throw a flag there and not call off-setting penalties when both players are obviously jawing at each other.

I will be the last person to make excuses for Hall, but he doesn’t deserve to be placed with ALL of the blame for this game, as your article suggests.

D-Hall needs to just shut the hell up! Do I think the officials overreacted with those calls, there’s no doubt about it. But preaching about being a leader and then going off and getting 67 yards worth of penalties on one drive while letting Steve Smith get the best of you proves this guy really is a mental midget and is nowhere close to being one of the premier cornerbacks in the league. All he is is another loudmouth who cost his teammates a victory after they played their hearts out and finally started showing their fans something. Falcons fans deserve better. Thank God we at least have UGA.

Fans and AJC need to shut up. Do the player come to your job and tell you how to do your job? Smith and D.Hall was talking both should have been flaged. I here the fans And AJC telling the player to shut up and play ball . This is part of the game. You can’t get punked out. I did not hear not one Fan nor AJC tell smith to shut up! Why would any player want to come to Atlanta as a player and have to put up with this BS. The Fans and AJC need to check your self. when you lose we have to have a scapegoat and in Atlanta we are world worse at doing that. Classless sport paper and Fans culeless! Why come to player haterville?

Foster WON this game. Hall didn’t lose it. Granted Hall didn’t help with his bone-head antics, but if you can’t score from the 2 and you can’t stop the run, you don’t deserve the win.

NASCARfan? That explains it all! Hall screwed up but the idea of trading him is ridiculous. He made a very costly mistake which cost the team the game but he has apologized so lets move on. We seem to have moved on from Belichick’s cheating scandal which was a far greater offense then trash talking no matter how you see it.

Adam Archuleta played like garbarge too, ask Jason Witten. Go Cowboys.

Falcons fans are a joke, always looking for a scapegoat. The only reason I follow the team is because I live here and my daughter who was born here is a die-hard Falcon fan. Will not make the same mistake twice; raising my son to be a Cowboy fan because he will see at least one Super Bowl wiN.

Kudo’s to Michael Boley for his outstanding linebacker play. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about Brooking and Malloy. Brook is a slow white dude and Malloy is washed. In the old days he would have laid the wood and stopped the likes of Foster.

DHall played a great game. The chuck of Smith at the line is totally legit. You can’t blame hime for being upset about the bogus flag for that. We don’t know what he said to the Ref that prompted the UC call, but that also looked bogus to me. Is he a self centered egotistical megalomaniac? Yes. But he is also a good corner with the potential to be great if he can learn how to control his emotions. His loss of composure shifted the momentum of the game in the Panthers favor.

Petrino DID get fired up on the sidelines and put some playa’s in their place, unlike Mora would have been.

Joey H. played terrific. Our D-line is porous, Big Grady and Boley can’t do it all by themselves. I agree with a previous poster, Chauncy Davis looked terrible, give Carrington a chance.

So we’re 0-3, but not for lack of trying. The season teeters on the brink of no return. Who will ultimately get the blame? Probably Petrino, the guy who deserves it least but most likely to take the brunt. If we can fix our run defense we just might surprise some folks and come back from the basement.

Falcons lost for three reasons: 1) Hall losing his cool and shifting momentum. 2) horrible officiating. Hall did nothing wrong on the first conduct penalty. It was a clean hit, plain and simple. The officials just felt like he and Smith were getting out of hand so that called out Hall. 3) No run defense. None at all. But we did get to see how well Joey can play if he gets a good O-line. It was very encouraging, despite the loss, to see how well the O-line improved. It gives me hope.

Atlanta has a debilitating obsession with race. This said in the Post-Olympics report in 1996. Blacks run Atlanta Government. Dominate the Atheletic rosters. Blacks are the Majority Race in the City of Atlanta. Yet, with all this opportunity, cry race at every stumble. Who is it that robs and murders people EVERY SINGLE DAY in this city. It ain’t the white folks. Your culture overall is either violent or tolerates violence and thuggery. You support other blacks no matter if they’re right or wrong. If whites do that they are racist. Double-Standards galore! The race card is so F*ing tiring, I’m ready to scream. The only minority in the country who uses it. Others come here poor and work their butt off to get ahead, same old lazy story. GIMME GIMME GIMME! Get over it.

Where is the coward Arttie Blank, why is he not stalking the side lines.

He is almost as big a disgrace to the State of Georgia as Peanut Jimmie Carter.

That second penalty was b******! He just jammed him at the line. Can you not be physical in this league anymore? However, I am sick of his antics, and I think his time in Atlanta is up. We should have won that game. As a matter of fact we should be 3-0 instead of 0-3. That horrible kicker cost us the first two games and D.Hall cost us this one.

Maybe Hall did lose control but so did the stupid officials…they shouldn’t play in the outcome of the game. They knew they did this; later they tried to make it up….too late for the Falcons…

I agree with the comment that the linebackers played like crapola the tight end was using them, hell, I coulda caught some passes against that raggedy pass D.

Why are there 85% to 90% white officials? White officials have always been less tolerant and revengeful on Black Players. These White Officials should not let testiness decide a football game. Study the films and see how many Black Players are flagged by white officals vs. Black officials.. The results would be eye opening.

From a Panther fan…there were some bad calls in that game. The unnecessary roughness on Jake was BS and the only justified call against Hall was the PI. Steve was taking cheap shots at Hall all game long. Let them play or flag them both. I hate it when refs play such a big part in the game b/c it cheapens the win. The momentum shift in that series of DHall penalties certainly changed the game…to go from a 3rd down sack to 1st down on a stupid penalty is a killer.

Get a grip people. Pay attention to the penalty call. That last penalty that extended the drive wasn’t for trash talking Steve Smith. Listen to the referee’s call, it was for abuse of the official. He got the last penalty for trashing the official. That’s just stupid.
