Weekend predictions: Alabama looks fishy
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
While the Georgia football team held top-secret practices this week because, as it turns out, that’s why they couldn’t knock anybody over in the South Carolina game, “Science” magazine reported some really shocking news last week.
Researchers at Tokyo University, which also can’t knock anybody over and yet somehow has eluded the SEC as a non-conference opponent, secretly used salmon as surrogate parents to hatch baby trout. This is a major scientific breakthrough, and great news for researchers in Flowery Branch, where they’re attempting to cross two cast-off quarterbacks in hopes of hatching season-ticket renewals. But I digest.
The Japanese scientists injected sperm-growing cells from rainbow trout into sterile Masu salmon, who, I’m guessing, were about to go the adoption route.
Which leads me back to our little Trembling Chihuahuas. They had closed practices this week. With any luck, they were held in Tokyo, because they need to be injected with a new personality.
They looked weak against South Carolina. They didn’t look much better against Western Carolina, which largely exists to make you look good.
Alabama is 3-0 under Nick Saban, who I’m fairly certain is the tragic result of crossing Pinocchio with snake sperm. He is a disciple of Bill Belichick. So you can understand why Mark Richt would suddenly be concerned about his practice turning into a YouTube production.
Nothing secret about the game: It’s ESPN’s GameDay.
But the result? Shocking! Salmon spawning trout! Dogs and Blocks, living together!
Take the 3 1/2. But the world learns: Bowsers in an upset.
Pros, Lies and Videotape
Panthers at Falcons: I don’t know why the Falcons wouldn’t let Byron Leftwich wear No. 7. Seems to me it would’ve been a great way to clear some inventory in the gift shop. Joey Harrington is a really a nice guy, but that’s not a warm embrace he’s about to feel. Carolina covers 4.
Chargers at Packers: Marty Schottenheimer got fired because he went 14-2 and lost to New England by a field goal in the playoffs. Norv Turner is 1-1 and just got drilled by the Patriots on national TV 38-14. As a head coach, he’s a pillow in Tombstone. But: Methinks L.T. goes nutso this game: Chargers win and cover the 41/2.
Lions at McNabb: Let me say that I believe I’m being edited differently because I’m not Presbyterian. Eagles win, but take Detroit and 6 1/2.
Colts at Texans: Matt Schaub is 2-0. I know, but it’s market correction week in Houston: Colts cover 6.
Bills at Patriots: Roger Goodell didn’t suspend Belichick and took some heat. So now he’s backtracking and wants to see more videotapes. What next, dust for prints? You’ve got a better chance still finding somebody on the grassy knoll. Pats win, but I invoke the NFL/two-TD rule: Take the Bills and 16 1/2.
Titans at Saints: Is it just me or was Reggie Bush better when he was lying about his parents living illegally in a free house? Saints cover 41/2.
Semi-pros, Lies and Videotape
Yech again: It’s one thing to lose to Boston College. It’s another to get completely waxed on your home field (total yardage: 527-267?) by a team you were favored to beat. But then it wouldn’t be a Chan Gailey team if it all made sense. Lose at Virginia, and the Clemson game suddenly becomes the plug in the drain. Tech covers 3.
Florida at Mississippi: Something you may not know: The Gators have lost three straight games in Mississippi. I figure this will go down in history, like the fact Custer actually ducked a few arrows. Florida covers 23.
Poultry at LSU: Steve Spurrier said this week, “I don’t want our guys to go down there with false belief that we have a great chance to win this game.” Know the difference between that and the doomsday talk of Georgia week? This time he’s right. If they don’t hyperventilate, Tigers cover 16 1/2.
Arkansas State at Tennessee: The Vowels ran for 37 yards in Gainesville. Now, if Phil Fulmer actually ran 37 yards, that would be something. (Thank you. Try the veal.) Tennessee wins, but the line’s too big. Hey, 19 (and a half), we can dance together.
Kentucky at Arkansas: If Rich Brooks wants another contract extension, he had better push for it soon because Andre Woodson’s leaving in January. Kentucky 3-0? And they haven’t even played Georgia yet! Enough: Arkansas covers 6 1/2.
PROFIT MARGIN
In summation: Slimski
Last week: 7-4 straight up, 5-4-2 against the line
Quarterly report: 20-9 straight up, 16-10-3 against the line
(Totals have been adjusted to reflect a loss erroneously credited to win total last week, thanks to alert readers who clearly have no life, no job and no purpose other than to give me grief, which is amazing considering we’re not related. Also, as clarification spread “pushes” are credited as ties, because, dude, I’m not Vito the Bookie and that’s the way they do it in Vegas, less the “juice.” )

Georgia runs the ball right down the weak Bama defensive line.Once run is established Stafford has big day.
Bama moves and scores on Matinez’s bend and break defense with ease.Last ball belongs to Georgia and they finish the drill.

Alright you guys..it’s what you have all been waiting for…the D-Man’s in the house and he’s a got this weeks prediction for you. Yes, I am refering to the Ga-Bama game. Here’s the deal. Saban was lucky real lucky to get out of the Arkansas game a winner..just think how the Bama faithful would be moaning about him giving up the 21 point lead if he would have lost!! But I digress…Anyway, I think the Ga team going into hibernation this week is a good thing. Richt always comes out with a good game plan when he is faced with the prospect of facing an SEC opponent on their home turf. And can you imagine how excited Moreno and Brown must feel knowing they will be facing the BAMA players that gave up so many running yards to McFadden and company? Man, Ga should get the run game cranked and I can see BAMA wore out by the half! Stafford will have a game very much like he did at Auburn last year…BAMA’s secondary is suspect and Stafford will expose it. Look for Martinez dialing alot of pressure for John Parker Wilson…all in all I see a runaway game by the 4th…the BAMA faithful will be leaving for the parking lot by the 4th quarter. And thats the way it will be…GA-35, AL-13. Bet on it.

I think (hope) that UA wins in a close one. These are two upper middle class teams that can’t keep up with UF or LSU but they will battle it out amongst themselves. UGA doesn’t have the running game that Ark. has so that doesn’t worry me but we will see if the dogs have any more weapons.
BTW, how lame is Schultz’s article?? I don’t care that he picks UGA… It is the AJC for God’s sake - but the article sucked.

I can’t imagine anyone actually paying for a subscription to the rag. Mr. Shultz needs to self-copulate, but I suspect he does the best he can most nights already.
By the way, judging by the spelling and grammar ability displayed in the comments, it appears that the Georgia lottery simply isn’t getting the job done.

For everyone ripping on Shultz: You really should learn to appreciate real wit and humor. Football is close to God in the South, but unfortunately being petty and tiresome seems to be as well.

You attempt at being funny is another is just another example of the ‘sore loser’ attitude of most UGA fans. UGA students flipping off Gamecock fans at the stadium, your tacky, disgusting and vulgar T-shirts about our coach, turning the scoreboard off 1 second after the game ended, and your attitude that somebody other than your players failing to score more points than the opponent is the reason you lost a game. Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention/ask.
When did we stop rushing punters? It is as though we give every punter on every team a free kick. I am not saying that we need to go after the punter and try to block one or two a game (that would be nice though) but we don’t even rush anybody. Eventually some other coach is going to notice that we turn and run down field on EVERY SINGLE punt, which will certainly lead to a fake punt and game turning momentum.
It would be okay if our punt return team led the nation in returns but we don’t even excel in that, so setting up for a return and not rushing the punter is just senseless. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Watch Saturday night.

Am I the only person who is tired of Schultz calling the Dogs the “Trembling Chihuahuas,” or what? If Schultz (sporting either “Blue-Steel” or “Le Tigra” in his headshot) was a beat-writer for the Dogs, the ACJ would have thought that Georgia closed practices three years ago. I wonder if Schultz is “man enough” to ask Kade Weston or Danell Ellerbe to their faces what they think of the name?
Also Dog fans, if any of you don’t know, Josh Kendall (Macon Telegraph) is one of the best writers out of the whole bunch covering the Dogs on a daily basis - check him out if you haven’t. Oh, and the Chattanooga paper does a pretty good job too. Plus, its fun to read about Tennessee when they’re losing.

Dawgs always pick it up when their backs are up against a wall. Remember Auburn last year? They’ve always known how to win the big games, even if it’s not 1980. And I really hate it when ESPN hypes teams from week to week (e.g. Alabama) just because they win one lousy game. I like what Chris Fowler writes in his latest ESPN column — that he doesn’t think UA has ever won when the Game Day crew visits Bryant-Denny stadium. And they’ll be back on Saturday. So why break the tradition now?
Bottom line: UGA has more talent and will win if they show up. Dawgs will roll over the elephants.
JR: Not to defend the column (it’s just plain weird), but Schultz MEANT “digest” — that’s the point. Brent: If you’re going to bold a comment … at least say something. D-Man is an idiot: The dawgs don’t have McFadden, but they probably get Lumpkin back. So that’s Brown, Moreno and Lumpkin. Who needs McFadden and company? For UGA it’s about catching the freakin’ ball and decent play from the o-line. Randy Layman: South Carolina is poultry. For reference — see LSU game on Saturday. I want to see what Spurrier says at the end of that one.

I like your nickname for the Dawgs because they play like it. I’m posting this before the game, which I also think the Dawgs will pull the upset, because Carter Strickland article about CMR and the passing game says so many things about CMR’s philosophy, Eason approach to coaching and why the Dawgs are in danger of becoming a 2nd level team in the SEC. Read his article and draw your own conclusions. When you have the talent and the attitude, then 2nd and 10 is no big deal in today’s college game. Just look around the SEC East and watch how much todays offensives have changed in the last 3 yrs. I’m not sure if Goodman is a Jr. or Sr. but read Eason’s statement about what he told Goodman to do in the W. Carolina and wonder why it took him so long to figure that out. If I were a WR or a strong armed QB, and read that one article, Ga. would be OFF MY SHORT LIST IN A HURRY. I hope that CMR will make the vertical passing game a real part of the Dawg offense and not as he said, sometimes you have to go down field. He’s been protecting the young “OL so far and that IMO has been the right thing to do but from here on it’s time to open the play book and keep it open so Bobo can fully use the talent he has. Hate to be the one to break the news to Eason but you don’t break the spirit of the big ego, you coach a players ego into mature leadership. Notice Goodman’s use of the word “encouraging”.

Hey GA fans lighten up. He picked you to win. He does this for comedic value. If you don’t like his articles, don’t read them. Don’t you figure his bosses like the fact that you all send so many responses to his articles? That means you are reading them! Now for the serious part, I figure GA will win because of the simple fact that Richt always has his teams ready to play a big conference road game. For some reason the team seems much more focused to play on the road than at home. I hope I am wrong, but GA by 3 late. And just so you know, your Brown, Moreno and whoever else you have does not come close to equaling McFadden. You may run for some yardage, but one back getting 200 yards just will not happen. You don’t have one good enough. Roll Tide.

OK Buck from somewhere else, you tell me how much offenses have changed in the past three years - Florida?…Tennessee?…hardly. Seems to me those teams are pretty much doing the same things they’ve been doing. Kentucky? OK, I’ll give you that one, after all it’s amazing what you can do with a great quarterback and an OL. Vandy? Cutler’s gone. So that leaves South Carolina. Which makes me think that you’re talking about ‘The Real Deal’ (ego-wise) Steve Superior. Didn’t see him throwing the ball down field on first down all that much against us…and, by the way that game coulda and shoulda gone Georgia’s way. I don’t believe the game has changed all that much. You still win at the line of scrimmage. As Vince Lombardi always said - football is only blocking and tackling, everything else is secondary…and he’s still right today. We’ll find out this weekend if Georgia’s young OL and DL is progressing. And even if we don’t get it done Saturday, you can bet your bippy that they will get better over the season…CMR and his staff can coach ‘em up with the best of ‘em. By the way, what are you one of those ‘spys’ for some other team looking to ridicule UGA in the AJC?

If GA wins it will not be because they run the ball down the throat of ‘Bama. for goodness sake, GA’s run stats are: 142 OKST 128 So. Car 140 W. Car.
Troy gained more yards on the ground than GA did against OKST. ‘Bama gained 313 on the ground against W. Car.
No the reason GA. will win is because of their defense and because of Stafford. ‘Bama has not seen a good defense yet, and to be honest they have not played against a good QB yet. Be realistic folks. ‘Bama puts no pressure on the QB and if you give Stafford time he will pick you apart. That is why GA. will go home with the victory in my opinion. We all know what opinions are like…, maybe mine will be proven wrong. Roll Tide!

Bottom line: Alabama needed a series of questionable calls to beat Arkansas. Then with the longest delay for a yardage measurement (that was not even close) in the last 20 years. If the SEC has good officials GA wins by 10. If the SEC continues to wish for a reawakening of ‘the Bear’ and the Alambama tradition, they will allow pitiful calls to help AL to beat GA by 3. Look for the phantom hold or pass interference to the Tide’s best play!

wow! Roll tide is acting like a typical frenzied fan facing success for the first time in their life. undefeated??? when you could barely beat arkansas??? how logical. I am nervous about the dawgs and i’m a uga fan. But, i am confident as well. I’m sick of qbs with three names, Parker and Booty. After an emotional come from behind win, tide comes out flat due to being emotionally drained. I’ve seen it all too many times, especially with a team dealing with success for the first time in decades.

Georgia will win because of the Murphy Laws of College Football:
Teams that celebrate a big win one week will fall flat on their face the next (watch out Kentucky).
A team that hears all week they have no chance of winning will find a way to win (Don’t worry, be Appy).
I think it will be close. I say the halftime score will be 10-7 and the final will be 24-17. Go Dawgs!

The missing ingredient to UGA’s lackluster seasons in recent years past has been a weak offensive line - there’s always been talent behind them. SEC Championships are won behind strong O-lines; they get no glory, but they’re critical for offensive success. Did anyone see the holes USC’s line opened up for their running backs? My grandma could’ve gotten 200y against Nebraska with those canyons! The UGA O-line this year? Young, inexperienced, small. Bulldogs, prepare yourselves for another lackluster season, continuing with a loss tomorrow. Next year won’t be that good either, we lose what few seniors we have and go to almost all freshmen and sophomores. Never bet against your team, right? Well I’m not putting money on Bama, but I remain cautiously pessimistic as every Bulldog fan should.

Safest bet - UK and the points
The Cats are going to win this one on the road. The difference - UK’s offense is balanced, Arkansas’ is McFadden and a couple other guys running. UK’s defense held the #1 offense in the nation to 6 points in the 2nd half when the Cats’ defense should have been tired and worn down. They can’t stop McFadden (he’ll get his usual 200+ yards) but they will slow him down enough for Woodson & co. to out score the Hogs.

the key to this game is stafford.bama will load up on the line to stopmoreno and brown.they will also stay at home to guard against screens and draws.if stafford steps up uga will win,if he doesn’t it may be time to turn it over to cox.stafford isn’t very nimble in the pocket,he will need to release the ball quickly, but on target.he also needs to sense the rush,in other words, when to hurry and when to take his time and find his open man.he rushed two throws against usc when he wasn’t under pressure and threw poorly to two wide open recievers.no more high fast balls over the middle!sooner or later a db is going to return one of those for a td.goodman or bailey will be open deep early, stafford has to put the ball on target, and they have to make the catch.if the ball is well thrown, not high or behind the wr,it could be a td.stafford has a strong arm,but doesn’t seem to get enough loft on the deep ball.

Bama wins at home. While Arkansas exposed a tired Bama defense in the 3rd quarter, it was all McFadden, a weapon Georgia (and every other team in the country) seems to lack. Once McFadden’s bell was wrung, Arkansas was a very average team again.
The Bama fans are acting as if Saban had already walked on water and turned the same water into wine, so the stadium will be much like the Roman Coliseum and the Dawgs will be thrown to the lions - it will be a tough place to play.

Proud Tide fan here and equally as proud to say this high six figure a year earner once called Alabama home. I suppose when you’re a Dawg fan and you come out of the gate overrated and overranked and you get your swampbutt smelling rear ends kicked the way yo did by SC, pointing fingers and calling names, the way Georgia sissies always do, could possibly make you feel better. Afterall, how you possibly feel good about your team that’s already chalking up an SEC loss this early in the game. Who is 3-0 and who is you overrated idiots. And who has the most national titles? LSU will own the SEC and then the Tide will, Georgia…on good day will be fourth at best in the SEC, possibly fifth. ROLL TIDE.

I think we are looking at 2 second place teams in our divisions. LSU and FL look like the real deal. I think GA has an advantage on defense and AL has advantage on offense. I think turnovers are once again going to be the key to the game. I have seen John Parker Wilson try to force some throws. I think GA wins in a close one. 24-20

at the start of the year - i had bama going 8-4 losing to UGA, FSU, LSU and AU. I have since reconsidered the UGA loss. I really think that UA will pull it out this weekend in much of the same manner they pulled out the Ark win. Remember - Bama would have lost that game last year, so say what you want to about Saban, but he was the difference in the win last week and will be for this week. No national championship year this year, but in the very near future.

Georgia and Bama are both not at thier best. Each have weaknesses and similarities. Well coached, no doubt. Solid but sometimes shakey quarterback play. A defense that shows up one play and doesnt the next.
Where I give Alabama the edge is on speical teams (Arenas leads the SEC on returns) and the Offensive Line (hehind all SEC Andre Smith and pre-season All SEc Center Antoine Caldwell), BUT, you have to give the dogs the egge on the D Line, and that could very well be where the game is won.
Bama is thin in the D. If its close, and Georgia can run the ball, it will go well for the dawgs. If Bama establishes run early, which opens man passing routes, look at Dawgs. It coule be a long night.
Its going to be a classic, and I couldnt eb more proud to be hosint what I consider the class of the SEC, the Georiga Bulldawgs. Best classiest fans by far, than any school in the SEC.
Im an Alabama grad and love them with all my heart, but after 10 years in GA, Ive come to appreciate the GA tradition and the way thier fans handle themselves. Auburn could take some lessons from GA on how to act with some class, whether winning or losing.
Its gonna be a great one. For those coming over to TTown, I hope you have a great time and get treated with the respect you deserve. Its a beautfil campus and stadium and should be wonderefl night. I live for nights like these!!!!

The best part of the season, whether you are a dawg or an tide fan, is that the Awbarn folk are keeping thier freakin mouths shut for once. AFter a 1-2 start, and losing to two horribly bad teams and searching for something good to hang thier hats on, its nice to see that minus a couple of world class RBs and defenenders, Brandon Cox is barely adequate at best.
Quentin Groves is a stud though. Holy hell that dude is a man for sure…..on par with McFadden on toughness and grit.

First of all calling each other rednecks doesn’t determine the outcome of the game. Second, every one of the UGA fans that predict UGA to win always have a lot of “ifs” in there comments. Third, I am undecided about the class that UGA fans display after a loss. I was at the UGA/USC game and didn’t suffer any reprecussions from the fans. Many commented on a good game; however, a USC Tuba player was jumped after the game. Are these actions really necessary? I don’t think it’s classy. Wonder why they chose a band member to jump? Maybe that is the kinda of PR they teach at UGA. And lastly, I sure hope that Shultz isn’t a UGA grad, if so the English and Journalism departments should be ashamed of themselves.
On another note. Why would a writer demonstrate his/her lack of professionalism by drumming up baseless accusations and demeaning other people and programs? Based on this article, I think Shultz is a fish out of water.

I understand you guys are excited about the new coach, and the come from behind win, and the fact AL is 3-0 but let’s be realistic…you barely beat a team, who at their best, epitomizes mediocrity. With that being said, I certainly don’t have any dillusions about GA either, they lost to SC for heavens sake but there’s no way AL is a better team than GA. Hilarious, You can’t be serious to think that UGA is better than UA. UGA couldn’t even score a touchdown against USC and you think the Dogs are a better team. There were numerous times UGA could have scored six but had to settle for three against USC. Red Zone proficiency is abysmal. That isn’t going to change.

J Dawg, When was the last time UGA was relevant on a national scale. I was laughing my butt off when I went to the UGA/USC game and watched on the big screen the highlights of the 1980 championship team. 1980? come on. nothing any more recently relevant. Every year UGA starts off highly ranked and end up disappointing their fan base. Don’t talk about relevance unless UGA has been so and they haven’t. They have won their share of SEC titles but it won’t be this year. They are already two games out of the hunt. The entire campus will go into cardiac arrest if they ever beat UF which isn’t going to happen any time soon. I will guarantee you this, Bama will win a national title before uga will. Mike, A little trivia… Who is the only team in the country to be rated in the AP top 25 at the end of the season for the last 10 years? Thats right, The Dawgs! It is also notable that we have finished in the top 10 in five of the last 10 years. While we certainly have not been regual title contenders, we have been one of the better and most consistent programs for the past decade.
It would take a small miracle for the Dawgs to win the SEC this year, but Alabama, in my opinion, would need an even larger miracle. But who knows, maybe the refs will keep gifting games to you at crucial moments and maybe the the Bear will rise from his grave… You gotta believe in Bammer football!

Mike, I respect your opinion and the fact you are an excited Tide fan…I understand, I know you guys are expecting great things but GA has been here for the better part of this decade, and by here I mean a consistant winning program, even when we struggled last year we pulled through with some clutch wins at the end and were ranked. I know Saban will do great things with that program and indeed, AL will be consistant contenders, however, it will not be this year. You guys have to give him some time to make the adjustments and he will. I can’t help but compare the ‘man enough’ saga last time we played, it was close but we were the better team…all the speculation and hype over Saban and Bama is creating that same scenario which will ultimately be Bama’s demise.

Dear bama fans, what has georgia done that is relevant in the last few years is win 2 SEC championships. Alabama had a losing record last year. Give me a break. And then to bring up that FL has won every year is a joke. If you want to talk recent history talk about GA beating you 2 times in a row or Auburn kicking the crap out of you every year. Wow you beat ARK with a little help from the refs. feel good about that. I guess that you might not lose 7 games like you did last year. You may win the battle for 2nd place in the West. Those national championship talk might be a little premature. Not to say that UGA is going to be giant killers this year either but I bet we give John Parker Wilson a nice welcome to the SEC. I hope he throws those dead duck deep balls against us.

Jeff Schultz, I think you accidently posted your rough draft. Is that really the article you meant to post. Go look at David O Briens article about the Braves. Reread your own article. Hit the delete button rapidly and start over. We all make mistakes but don’t allow this piece of trash article to stay online any longer. You can even keep the same predictions

My post didn’t attack you or UGA, I was talking about how classy of a match up it has been in the past. Them you attack me? Nice. Stay Classy Bahr Killer and Tim.
I wonder if you feel so confident as to put your money where your mouth is? I bet no.
Bama gutstomps UGA tomorrow night in T-town and WELCOMES stafford to a real SEC team.
38-17 Bama.

Any sane ‘Bama fan would have told you in August that 2-3 was possible, 3-2 was good, 4-1 great, 5-0 unbelievable. The reason the fans are over the top is the coach seems to preach a message the players are buying. Excellence is what is demanded. Good is not good enough, they must push to be excellent.
Everyone figures ‘Bama will not win the NC this year, and most think the west is out of reach. What is in reach is a quality, competitive team that can over achieve what was predicted prior to the season. Win this week and great things are possible. Lose this week and a good season is still possible.
I think GA. wins a close one. The defense is the best ‘Bama will have seen. I look for a defensive struggle with points at a premium. I figure GA. wins late.
Now if there is poor weather throw it all up on the air.

Oh yea, I almost forgot……
What does Auburn have to do with the game tomorrow night? Oh, that’s right, nothing……
Good luck, you will need it. I guess if I had lost to South Carolina I would resort to crap like that too.

This must be one of those morons who think two rolls of toilet paper and a box of chemical detergent strapped to his otherwise useless skull is clever.

Another Ed you said the below,
And just so you know, your Brown, Moreno and whoever else you have does not come close to equaling McFadden. You may run for some yardage, but one back getting 200 yards just will not happen. You don’t have one good enough.
While I agree that one of our backs won’t rush for 200 yards I have to disagree with you as to the reason this won’t happen. The reason it won’t happen is because Coach Richt rotates his RBs so no one Tailback will get enough carries or get into a rythem carrying the ball. As for Knowshon Moreno he does have the talent and while he may not have proven he is in McFadden’s league he sure has shown flashes of it in the first three games when he has played.
