Richt’s rightfully scared

Terence Moore

Roger Goodell blew it.

Look. The revelation of Bill Belichick’s cheating ways is affecting just about every football team at every level - including the one that barks at the University of Georgia.

I mean, Mark Richt, the anti-paranoid coach, closed Bulldog practices this week to outsiders for the first time ever.

That’s because Georgia plays at Alabama on Saturday night, and Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban once worked for Belichick, the New England Patriots coach, who finally was busted for using a video camera during games to swipe opposing team’s defensive signals.

Like mentor, like pupil.

You’ve got to think that way if you’re Richt or anybody else facing a team whose coach once worked with a guy whose three Super Bowl titles should include asterisks.

In case you didn’t know, other teams, ranging from the Green Bay Packers to the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Jacksonville Jaguars, have accused Saban of espionage in the past. Nothing was done. The NFL hierarchy implied by its silence that “everybody does it.”

The truth is, such things always have taken place in the league, but not with such arrogance and blatancy.

So this punishment for Belichick from the NFL commissioner’s office was outrageously soft: $500,000 fine, and the loss of a first-round draft pick if the Patriots reach the playoffs, or the loss of their second-and third-round picks if they don’t.

The guy should have been fined AND suspended for at least two games. That, and he should have been forced to replace his hoodie on the sideline with a suit.

Terrence,

we may have a problem later in the yr.

Urban Myer is good buddies with Bellich.

Myer thanks “hoodie” hung the moon.

Then again, he also thinks Grannie (works now for ESPN) hung the moon.

Grannie, that Ole Coot, running all over the field a few yrs. ago at Clemson trying to get his players from throwing there helmets and fist s at Clemson players.

Terence, sometimes I just think you like to hear your self babble man..LOL. That’s ok, you’re PAID to do that. “Asterisks by their titles”? Man, it ain’t that serious..they got those titels because they bust people in the mouths and have a precision offense. And “light fine”? Let me see you give half a million dollars out of your pocket(for something other than your pleasure) and then comment on how ‘light’ a fine it is, ok? All that espionage is just part of the game man, and you know it. I forgot, you have a JOB to do called sensationalism, just like ESPN and all the other networks…LOL. The suspenions? I can go with that, but not in conjunction with the fine. Mark Richt? Have really opinion of him other than his apparent integrity and coaching styleand his ability to recruit…i’m sure behind closed doors there’s a foot going into a couple of butts of slackers on that team. I do hope they get thoroughly thrased this weekend, me being from Tuscaloosa and all and growing up in the Bear bryant era!..lol. Keep up the good work man, evoking emotion….you do!

I think any coach has the right to close his practices to the public any time he (or she) chooses to do so. I know it is an inconvenience for sports writers like Carter Strickland who kick up a stink when it happens because it does not serve the writers’ best interest, but who the hell cares about the writers. They are just bottom feeders trying to grift a living by writing about other people. Terence is right in his position that Richt should close practice this week. I say he should be able to close it any week and every week if he wants to and Carter Strickland can go write an article on what he did last summer, just like the other grammer school children that pout and throw a tantrum when they don’t get what they want. Carter is a poster boy for the entitlement generation that thinks that everything should be done to suit them, anybody that inconveniences them is in their way, and the world generally revolves around them. That is why the Bulldog Nation has little regard for him.

These are insane postings. Somebody talking about Moore like a dawg…then someone spelling words incorrectly…my stars people…stick to the topic at hand. UGA is doing the right thing. This game is huge for UGA and Bama and by us being less than 5 hrs apart and know Sabans history, it could be said that he might have a spy somewhere lurking on UGA’s campus. Trying to steal like Zaxby’s stole from Guthries…Ooops, did I say that???

My, my, all this speculation about cheating. It makes for a good excuse for losing, doesn’t it. I really don’t think Richt need worry about cheating. Both Alabama and Florida can beat UGA without it. I just hope the DAWG fans can accept that instead of yelling foul when they lose.

As a UGA grad, I don’t care if CMR closes practices. I just want the team to win the game against Bama. Saban has nothing to do with it. He just happens to be the coach now. Sounds like CMR has an excuse if the Dawgs come home losers on Saturday night.

As I posted on the other blog/same topic, I hope to hell CMR closed practice for good reason like preparing the Dawgs for the Bama game. The past two weeks have shown us that they haven’t been well prepared for their opponents.

I’m a dawg fan through thick and thin. I can forgive bad play calling, bad clock management but unprepardness for the upcoming opponent really chaps my @ss. When I see the abundance of talent that you see on UGA and see them as flat as they were against SC (I didn’t see the WC game but heard it) thats the coaching I find hard to forgive. I say Kudos to the coaching staff for closing the practices. I just hope it is for the complete and TOTAL study of the opponent and the game.

I would be very disappointed in CMR if he closed them because of possible spies. This would tell me he’s teaching them boys espionage instead of football.

Close them all coach from this week forward if it’s going to help improve dem’dawgs.

Maybe Richt just doesn’t want so many bandwagoners hanging around the week of a big game. Keep the players’ minds on their business and send a message that winning the game, not entertaining the good ole’ boys, is the business. I hope he keeps practices closed forever even if spying is a moot point.

By ARdawg

September 19, 2007 12:35 PM | Link to this

Saban isn’t a cheat. He doesn’t have to be, he’s a damn good coach. But that is all beside the point. If the the Dawgs are ready and well prepared it’s not going to matter who saw them practice. At the end of the day what it all boils down to when you have two well coached teams, is the better team.

Case in point was the SC game. UGA was obviously the better team and came away in the L column. SC was well prepared for Georgia, UGA was not prepared for SC.

By Chuck J

September 19, 2007 12:38 PM | Link to this

It is going to take alot more then closed practice this week. Three games into season one with Saban and, “we better close practice”. His real proplem with Saban is not this game , but how Saban is going to out recruit Richt in his own state. He had better figure out away to close recruits house’s. ‘Bama will win another Natl Champ before UGA even gets close. This game really means squat, but time is what really matters.

By Ed

September 19, 2007 12:41 PM | Link to this

Maybe Richt is really trying to instill a bunker, us-versus-them mentality. I hope so. Someone needs to light a spark in the Dawgs, something similar to what Florida showed against UT, SC showed against us, and Alabama and Arkansas showed against each other. A little more fire and desire. We need an entire team that plays with heart like Knowshown Moreno.

By Spike

September 19, 2007 12:46 PM | Link to this

Of course Saban “I am not going to leave the Dolphins and be the Alabama coach” would never do anything as dishonest as to spy on his next opponent in order to get an edge and justify that big money contract, would he? Naaaaahh!!

By Ed

September 19, 2007 12:47 PM | Link to this

Saban is indeed a “damned good coach” (although a bit overrated when his actual won-loss record is considered). However, history shows that he will be a DGC for someone else in about 4 years. That’s just his way, so Bama fans should enjoy his tenure while it lasts.

I love the dawgs, always have, always will. I do hope that I see another NC in my lifetime. I think CMR has done great things for the team, i.e., 3 trips to the Dome, 2 SEC Titles. But it hurts to see others win NC’s when I know we have equal talent at UGA. If coaching changes need to occur, let’s get it done. We want to win and I am tired of hearing, next year is our year!

Smoking crack and blogging will get you nowhere in life. Your statement on a Bama’s NC is proof you must be on drugs. Your post makes not one iota of sense. CMR closing the practice because of his fears of Sabans recruiting? I got dumber just reading that. Richt has no fear of Saban. Maybe a respect for Saban and his coaching/recruiting ability. There is ample recruits and Richt has proven himself again and again on his ability to get them. Georgia has always been a producer of high quality prospects. CMR hasn’t a lock on the state but who in the SEC has on any state?

By Got 12?

This is simply journalistic sensationalism. Richt closed practice to help his staff and team focus on the upcoming game. The week-long closure is due to the importance of the game, not Nick Saban. This is a watershed moment in UGa’s season.

Terry,

You are aware the Goodell levied the highest possible fine on Belichick and the Pats? In addition, do you know what to equate that loss of a #1 pick to? Let me tell you.

Richard Seymour Ty Warren Ben Watson Laurence Maroney Logan Mankins

Those are the Pats most recent #1 picks. You have 1 Hall of Famer (Seymour) and the others are starters and Pro Bowl caliber. The loss of that pick is very costly.

Save the righteous indignation for the 9/11 anniversary or the waste of a generation in Iraq.

You can dissect Sabans win/loss record but that doesn’t change the fact that he is an excellent X and O’s type coach who knows how to build a program into proven winner in the SEC and on a national scale. Maybe he will bolt from Bama in a few years. In this day in age and with the money on the table thats not unheard of. I don’t neccessarily respect him for it but I can somewhat understand it. It is still a business on his end.

Items: If CMR closed practice because of “espionage” I would say Saban is already in his head. If Saban was accused because he once coached with Bill, you might want to explore other resumes. If CMR and the Dawgs play like they have so far this season it will be a long night in T-Town, and a longer drive home. If Saban leaves in four years I will assure he will leave the program in better shape than he found it. He gets it, he understands it, and best of all, he relates it to the players. THAT is the mark (no pun intended) of an excellent coach!

Just a nice way of trying to get an indoor facility. That’s what I get out of it. Sounds like a good sales pitch. Question is: Are the money givers going to keep giving to produce such a facility if the Dawgs can’t win the big games?

Can you get top recruits if you can’t win the big games? i.e.Ga HS player picks USC over Georgia

Fact of the matter is that the bottom of the SEC East looks like this Tenn Georgia Some place that either team hasn’t been in a long time.

Another sad, pathetic attempt from the media to slur Saban’s name. The only thing saban has been accused of and even admitted to, was he watched the televised version of a game b/c you could hear the qb’s audibles. He took the audibles and worked it against them. The reason for the 21-0 victory over the patriots. Quit getting your sources from message boards.

By ARdawg

September 19, 2007 3:11 PM | Link to this

No matter how I look at it and I haven’t seen anything on the contrary to dispute it. It would appear to me that CMR has seen the writing on the wall and the need to get the dawgs some tunnel vision and focus. Some one on one prayer meeting on this game of football. Lets face it, even with two victories we’ve been looking pretty lethargic and lackluster.

Even in the OSU game there was little “fire in the belly”. There is no way we can win in Tuscaloosa with the status quo. I’m guessing Richt has taken this opportunity to turn it UP a notch.

Since the Pats and Bellichick, “spying” is the buzzword de jour for the season. I have no inclination that Saban is spying or that CMR would close practice because of spying rumors. It is obviously due to these young dawgs need some firing up and intense practices to remind them why they play this game, to WIN

Well since ARDawg cant remember (he must be about 7 years old) let me refresh you the last time Bama beat the precious dawgs.

The all time record 35-25-4

I want go beyond 1990 becuase its just too biased for Alabama.

1990- Georiga 16- Bama 17 1991 Alabama 10- Georgia 0 1994 Alabama 29- Georgia 28 1995 Alabama 31- Georgia 0 (athens) 2003 Georgia 27- Alabama 25 2004 Georiga 37- Alabama 23

So as you can, see, we havent played that much but its hardly anything for Georgia to brag about regarding thier record vs. Bama. You need to put in a lot of work to carry them bragging rights.

You may well do add to it Saturday night, but a different team better show up than the one Ive seen weeks 1-3 or its going to be a long night for the dawgs.

I’m guessing I’m most likely older than you but I digress. 12 years is a long time even at my age. I’m not one to keep useless stats in my head because I see no point. The only stat that counts on this point in time will be the one that gets put up this Saturday. That stat I believe will diminish that 10 win margin to nine.

I will concur with you, Bama has has some really good glory years that resulted in some wins over the dawgs but my friend those days are gone. long gone. Everybody and their step-sister has beaten Bama since the last win of the Tide over UGA. You’ve got a good coach but he’s no miracle man. You can’t make chicken salad out of chicken sh*t.

Your team had a good win over a mediocre team last week, still riding high and I’m afraid that has went to the bama fan’s head. Your group is talking alot of trash on this blog. I just hope you come back Monday to either rub our noses in it or to take you whippin like a man.

Terence,

Although I do find some of your columns to be entertaining, I find most of your work to be indicative of a lazy work ethic and absent of true critical thought. You spend too much time trying to strike a nerve with readers instead of exploring the true issues that should be discussed. Nick Saban accused of Cheating? If you had explored further, you would find that multiple complaints have been filed against numerous teams and coaches in the NFL - it seems to be part of the culture in professional football to lodge complaints.

Also, isn’t it interesting that we’re talking about UGA as a “potential victim”, but no where has the issue been raised that Frank Beamer at the beginning of the season raised the “spying” issue against CMR and UGA…

Let’s put paranoia aside and start talking about real issues - Like: (1) Are these 2 freshman offensive tackles going to be ready for Saturday? (2) Can Stafford maintain focus for more than 1 game and mature into the All SEC QB we expect him to be? (3) Can Bobo make progress as a play caller and show poise and intuition and finally move the football? These are the questions UGA fans and you, Terence should be asking… I think that’s what readers of this paper expect from you… not your run-of-the-mill pandering and lazy also-ran talking points… This is what we get from ESPN… from you, we expect and should get something better… JOURNALISM

LOL…for christssake man, stop harping on the 12 NC’s already, Bear is dead and gone they mean absolutely dick to your team this year and your coach. Did any of these so called “experts” tell you exactly how fast a “fast track” was?? The Tide is a long way away from another NC. Don’t drink that kool-aid. Bama is much farther than you want to admit. You seem like a reasonable enough man unlike some of your other breathern on this board. If you read back you’ll see I respect your coach for his ability and Bama for it’s tradition.

Bama Chad I don’t make my predictions in the fan circle jerk. I watched your team and I’m telling you they are not as good as you think. The Arkansas game proved you have exceptionally weak pass defense and your defensive line can’t break wind. Your offense sputters in much the same way as UGA’s but your QB won’t hold up

You sir, are a genius. When Terence said that, he was saying that to an NFL coach a fine of $500,000 is light. Obviously if someome who was not making 6 figures a year had to pay a $500,000 fine it would not be considered light. But you can’t say something like “let me see you pay it and then talk about how light it is” because Terence and his money situation are different than Bilichick’s.

I appreciate most of the comments here. Most normal people understand that there is enough film of each team to know what they do. Its Bama alumni hanging out watching UGA and emailing insights to Bama players that I would be concerned about. Heck, that could happen with any team regardless of the coach.

I think creating the silence also gives GA a little psych boost. What are they up to in there? What are they going to spring on Bama that is new and different. Creating the mystery and suspense should help Georgia.

I think Georgia wins by 10, 27-17. Lots of TD’s by passes and by Moreno busting loose.

terrence since you’re so cocksure of coach saban’s probability of spying, tell me (us) how in the hell this could get pulled off. is joe kines gonna drive over to athens to visit friends and drop by practice, then haul a* back to tuscaloosa? is kirby smart gonna enlist the assistance of some of his georgia contacts? jesus terrence come on man.

I guess Charlie Weiss has been spying as well. The coach from the Browns, you get the picture. I guess if Saban was 0 and 3 you would be trashing him and the University of Alabama for the 4 mil. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Maybe my next lifetime I can have the simpliest job in the world, be a sportswriter. Jump on whatever else everyone is talking about.

According to Carter: Bama and UF cheat…and you wonder why people say the AJC is a one-sided rag. The real story is the small story about Saban invading georgia…in eight months he’s already couped many studs for the ‘09 team and he is relentless like that coach in Florida. Meanwhile Georgia is trying to win an SEC game for the first time in months.

Saban HAS NOT been spying. As I have stated earlier he doesn’t need to. He is too good a coach to resort to that. But I’m sure he, like any other coach will absorb info where offered. But it doesn’t matter. This week Bama goes down and Tide fans will realize what a mediocre team they have this year.

You got lucky, very lucky last week. This week, heart of dixie fans, is a whole brand new week. Be pleased if you escape without a thorough lambasting and education of SEC football. It happened to Auburn last year and it shall be your turn this Saturday.

Why do we keep seeing this “recruiting” sh@t from these Bama fans on this blog? Saban isn’t God. He’s no better than Richt, Spurrier, Meyer, Fulmer or anyone else. Please Bama quit whacking off on yourself. It’s very unbecoming

You really don’t understand our coach. He wears bad looking hoodies because he is required to wear NFL issued gear. He resents this and so he makes it look as bad as possible. I heard him rave once about how nice a suit looked on a head coach and how you need special permission to wear a suit on the sidelines.

Also the NFL code is to cheat and look the other way when you see someone else do it. It has always been that way. So now we get an even playing field and no one will cheat against the Patriots. We can live with that!

This is such a non issue. That it’s such a hit shows how much sport has changed from SPORTS ILLUSTRATED to PEOPLE MAGAZINE. The game is about blocking and tackling. Sure, it’s good to safe gaurd against spies, but it’s nothing new. Football in Athens will get better when it goes back to being about football.

I’m an English teacher who teaches composition. Were Terence one of my students, his essay would be handed back with the instruction: “Decide whom your writing about: Belichick or Saban.” Clearly he wants to write about Saban, he wants to make the connection with Belichick and hold Saban culpable by association. But he’s so undisciplined as a writer that he goes off on a tangent about Belichick. How did this guy get a job with a major paper?

Richt has a reason to be paranoid. Not because someone may steal plays, but the fact that his team has lost the last five SEC East games dating back to last year. It is time for Richt to hold his team accountable. It is time for him as a coach to take a get in your face approach to wake these kids up.

Pitbull’s thought needs expansion. Take a hundred or so pouting reporters just like your Carter Strickland (Only worse cause they’re YANKEES!) and shut them all out of every practice and never answer any of their questions directly. Forbid all of rhe assistant coaches from speaking and fine any player that “speaks out of turn” in the locker room. Can you imagine all that pouting in one place? Now imagine that happening 30 miles south of Boston. Mix in a little “steroid-era” cheating hyteria and you have the most overblown tempest-in-a-teapot story ever. Do you see any asterisks behind the names Steelers, Cowboys, or 49ers? Why not? They cheated the salary caps year after year! No one was crying “Cheater!” then. Maybe they had more reporter friendly coaches?

Good luck this week Dawgs.

Who cares about Georgia vs. Alabama!!! Alabama should win because they are ranked higher than Georgia. Georgia should be more concerned about winning against Vanderbilt and Kentucky!!! Since Vandy and UKY took them to the woodshed last year!!! hmm….hmmm…. It would be more of a disappointment to lose to UKY and Vandy in 2 consecutive years than lose to Alabama.

Hey GT grad:

You forget so soon that UGA has owned GT for the past six years. If I were you, I’d stop talking about how UGA loses to Kentucky and Vandy and start thinking about the excuses you are going to have to use this year when Georgia whips your a$$ again.

Now let’s just wait a minute…

Saban has been tried and convicted on circumstance and his association with Belichick.

Does T. Moore even know that Saban coached on the OTHER side of the ball - DEFENSE, when he coached with Belichick - over a decade ago I might add.

Here’s a great question…If Saban is a cheater, how come no one is bringing up Charlie Weis?

After all, Weis did coach offense with the Pats, and did so only a few years ago.

Looks like T. Moore is another one of these elitist ESPN sycophants…

ARDawg, stop trying to spread the notion that it is BAMA fans spreading rumors. You need to look at you local beat writer and blast him. He started this entire blog. And for your info…BAMA will prevail this week and it won’t be close. Bama is going to slap the dawgs on the @ss all the way back to Athens. It’s going to be so bad that you will think Michael Vick had something to do with it.

Americans and some other nationalities take sports entirely too seriously. Who cares if one team spies on another? Fines and courtroom actions are inappropriate when we are talking about games people PLAY. We are just talking about PLAY. Hello?

I think Richt ought to close every practice no matter what team UGA is playing. Never give your enemy a chance to have the upper hand. When you do that the battle is lost. And why does everyone think bama is going to win. Let us look at who they beat last week Arkansas a team that one year can win the West and the next not even come close to winning the West. Plus you have to remember we have one thing bama doesn’t have Mathew Stafford.

I think Mike Vick’s sentence should be to play statue behind this O-line. But there’s a clause in the Constitution about cruel and unusual punishment, so that’s not happening.

At least Leftwich has a sense of humor. What do you call a piece of Falcon-red meat between two defensive ends? A leftwich. You want fries with that?

So, since Beamer accused Richt of spying on him, then Richt must be guilty of it too? that is about what you are saying. And many coaches have coached for a time under Belicheck, are they now all guilty by association of anything that Belicheck does?

Brent, Matthew Stafford is a joke. He looked terrible against USC. He will wilt under pressure. He may have better numbers than JPW but he can’t manage a game effectively. You can’t be serious when talking about MS winning this game by himself. He is and has been overrated since he arrived at UGA.

Terrence, Let me preface my comment by saying that I can not believe that I am actually reading your column since most of the pieces you write can be at best described as a series of ignorant rants. However, since I actually wasted two minutes of my life that I’ll never get back reading your piece, I’ll say this: YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!!!!! Your “guilty by association” accusations are just a way to excuse an inevitable UGA loss to Bama on Saturday. Bama doesn’t need to cheat to beat UGA, and by the way the Dawgs are playing, it doesn’t appear that too many other teams will need to as well.

GT NAD, Typical Toke. Over here living vicariously through other teams that beat UGA. Shouldn’t you guys be worrying about trying to win at Virginia this weekend? Something you haven’t done since, what 1990? Or maybe figuring out how to stop Clemson from running all over you like they did last year? And don’t say that was last year either, they have the same guys back. And if you are lucky enough, which can happen in the ACC, then work on getting ready for Boston College in the Blue Chair Bowl to determine your league chumpion.

Saban doesn’t need to spy to beat the Dawgs any more than the Patriots had to spy to stomp the Chargers last Sunday. Richt needs to worry about winning a game in the SEC East — 5 losses in a row over there. Richt can’t coach. Saban can. Blow out on Saturday.

To all you Dawg fans who are I’m-afraid-of-Saban-dawgs and whine-about- our- offense-dawgs, it is time to YOU to man up. I just took a big dawg #2 and it looks just like the state of Alabama only it smells better.

You want our players to man-up? I’d like to see some of our fans act a little more like a proud Uga and a little less like scared weenies.
