Win one soon, or Falcons fall apart

Mark Bradley

Flowery Branch — It’s barely week 2, and already the clock is ticking faster than Morley Safer’s pocketwatch. The Falcons have only so much time — two more games, three at the outside — to prove to themselves and a skeptical public that they, contrary to the misdoings in the Metrodome, aren’t the worst team in pro football.

To listen to Bobby Petrino on Monday was to hear a coach who believed his team wasn’t as lousy as the outcome — 24-3 against a not-very-good opponent — made it seem. “It looks like a bad score,” he said, “but we were right in the game with 7:53 to go, and halftime it could’ve been 7-6 or even 6-0 in our favor.”

And if this had been another game for another team in another season, that notion wouldn’t have sounded nearly so wishful. Even good teams have bad luck and bad days. But nobody expected these Falcons to be much good, and when their wretched opener fit those worst-case scenarios to a capital “W” … well, that lifted no one’s spirits.

So the clock’s ticking, and either these Falcons win a game before the month’s out or they’ll have become what everyone else anticipated them being and they swore they wouldn’t become — a hopeless case, a lost cause, the utter dregs of NFL 2007. And it won’t be enough to look good and lose (or, as happened Sunday, to look slightly better than the score would indicate): Only a victory will suffice. More than one would be nice, but at this point even one looks problematic.

“We need to get a win,” Petrino said, and then he laughed. (Petrino doesn’t traffic in small talk, nor does he have much appreciation for the blatantly obvious.) “This will challenge our attitude and challenge our togetherness. But we’ll learn more about ourselves and our ability to keep a good attitude, and eventually it will [pay off].”

Perhaps it will. Perhaps Joey Harrington will preside over a touchdown drive before long. Perhaps Joe Horn will prove he can still get open. Perhaps Wayne Gandy will block somebody. Perhaps Jerious Norwood will get more than seven touches some given Sunday. Perhaps Alge Crumpler’s trick knee will hold up for 15 more games. But right now the Falcons appear to possess a sound new offense but too few playmakers.

“Completing 71 percent of our passes and converting 50 percent on third down, I would have said we’d have had a win,” Petrino said, but that’s what happens when the biggest play made by a quarterback is a big fat negative. Harrington threw the ball to defensive tackle Kevin Williams on the Falcons’ first series, and Williams returned it for a touchdown that kept the visitors from getting the lead they’d planned on having. (The idea was to get ahead early and make second-year quarterback Tarvaris Jackson throw.)

Afterward, Harrington said Williams was fooled so completely he wasn’t where he should have been, a strange thing for a quarterback to say. (Who threw the ball, anyway?) But that’s what you get with a guy who has started 67 NFL games and lost 44 of them, who has thrown 79 interceptions against 72 touchdowns. Harrington isn’t out there because the Falcons saw him as the quarterback of their dreams. He’s out there because the quarterback of their dreams is unavailable.

“We’ll watch the video,” Petrino said, “and we’ll continue to work and coach. And [the players] are going to see on video what opportunities were there.”

Opportunities, alas, aren’t to be confused with reality. The Falcons thought they would win Sunday, and they lost by 21 points. Things could get really bad really fast, and if they do the Falcons will be looking toward another clock. The draft is scheduled for April 26, 2008. These guys could well have the first pick.

As long as Harrington is the QB for the Falcons the opponents defense are going to have a field day teeing off on him to get him scared so he will throw them the ball. Harrington you are a great interviewer and you say all the right things but the fact still remains you can’t play on the NFL level. Thank you though for leading us to the #1 pick in the draft.

Does anyone really beleive that a team a woeful as the falcons will pull themselves up off the carpet and play with any heart, guts, desire or intensity and try to win a game before this season is lost. This team is already in the tank and its a credit to the lousy players, management and the history of ineptness that this franchise has displayed over and over again. Any of you who still think this team has the heart and will to win is just fooling themselves. How about rooting for the teams that have heart and guts and the will to go out and fight for a win. Wake up call - The falcons have no heart or will to win! Only one or maybe two of these players have the heart, guts and burning disire to win and could actually play for another team in tne NFL much less start. I’m not even sure who that one player or the two players could be. How Sad! Woeful!!!!!

Will all you morons still crying becasue Vick is not here get over it! He’s going to prison where he belongs! All your whining and crying will not change that fact and will not bring him back to this team! And guess what - because of HIS (VIck’s own) actions he shares in the blame for the current state of this franchise along with Blank, McKay and the divison 1-AA highschool coach and his offensive schemes the falcons now employ! Wasn’t it funny to see the Falcons on 4th and 1 or was it 3rd and 1, really doesn’t matter, run the Gator sweep to attempt to get a first down! Bush League! This is the NFL not highschool! Losers!

the problem starts at the top when you have a owner that brings in a college coach and espects to win in the NFL.first mora, first very bad descision.then petrino another bad descision.he comes in here from a college progam with a new version of the run and flute offense but people are not paying attention to that.a owner without a clue=bad caoch=bad players=bad program=bad and disgruntled fans.look at the big picture, everyones to blame starting from the TOP.

STOP TALKING ABOUT VICK. HE’S GONE.
If you haven’t noticed; he sucked the last two years as well.

Harrington completed 70% of his passes, the two INTs were not bad passes; just good plays on defense (the first) and Jenkins’ fault (the second). He wasn’t stellar; but he wasn’t the main problem.

The playcalling was bland - Wayne Gandy was a joke and Warrick Dunn needs to step aside for Norwood to be the featured back. He’s just not quick enough to get across our bad offensive line fast enough. Michael Jenkins was horrible; he needs to be replaced by L. Robinson. At least Roddy White looks like he’s for real finally.

Calm down people - IT’S ONE GAME.

The point is…. MV was literally BLAMED for ALL problems having to do with this TEAM! He was BLAMED for not taking this TEAM to the playoffs, the Superbowl…whatever, it was this guys fault! This TEAM has been EXPOSED! MV would not have been able to have much success with this TEAM! This TEAM is basically not that good. All of the problems that so-called Vick Supporters were stating what was wrong with this TEAM…poor defense, poor recivers, poor line…..are still evident on this team and have been for Vicks entire CAREER! MV`s QB skills were basically judged on the success of this TEAM…..which we see is lacking in too many areas to count! He had success in spite of these chronic problems….He is not here and will never

I hate to join the Joey-Bashers, but his quotes concerning the INT that HE ALONE threw — to a DEFENSIVE LINEMAN, no less — are distressing. “He was so far off the line, he ended up standing right where I wanted to throw the ball.” So, Joey threw it anyway…touchdown…game-winning points. Here’s another “Joey-ism”. When asked how this screw-up compared to those he made in Detroit and Miami, he came up with this gem: “This was different because we did things right.” HUH?!?! Joey, you threw a pick that provided the only points the Vikes needed, you knuclehead! What was “right” about that?

Please, Mr. Blank…could you at least consider Leftwich and maybe give him a look? It might help our team.

This team’s problems go so far neyond anything Vick-related it’s ridiculous. A typical Vick game (11/27 for 140 yds, 1 TD/2 INT; 75 yds rushing, 1 TD/2 fumbles) would not have changed the outcome.

This team is horrid on all fronts. Vick’s presence or absence has very little to do with the bulk of it, and the fairweather clowns who continue to embarrass this city by pointing to Vick as the only issue lack the intellectual capacity and analytical skills to comprehend the Falcons’ much more pressing problems.

Yeah, we need a 6’5” pocket passer for Petrino’s offense, but not this pocket passer, face facts people, Mike Vick was a bad QB but was the perfect fit for the Falcons…unfortunately, just a perfect fit to make them look presentable…or a 500 team, this is the beginning of the Falcons becoming a real team with a real offense.

To the blind Vick supporter:

The Falcons weren’t winning with Vick either—15-17 the last two seasons. In his six years, the Falcons got to the playoffs twice—his record was 2-2. His record no better than Jake Plummer and Plummer had a better rating and we all know where Plummer is these days.

Vick was not the only problem the Falcons had, but he was never going to lead the Falcons to a Super Bowl, let alone win one.

He is going to prison and after that at least a year out of the NFL and he will never again be a Falcon or be a QB in the NFL. Forgot about him as far as the NFL is concerned he no longer exists.

But if the Falcons keep playing the way they are, they get to draft Brian Brohm—a real QB. If the Falcons had known that Vick was going to implode, they would never have traded Schaub. Harrington was never meant to be a starter for the Falcons, your hero Vick put him in that position.

I don’t see the Falcons winning a game until week 11. 2-14 when it is all over. First on the clock on April 26.

Stop the gloom and doom and be more positive as Falcons Fans. MV is gone and though we all wish he was still here there is nothing we can do about that. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to rise again and if we are to hit rock bottom this year it would not be all bad. Consider that we would have first crack at darren McFadden from Arkansas and a very good QB( Brohm or another top QB). As for me I will remain a positive Falcons Fan, and will be there every Sunday to support them.

Give Joey a chance. For all of you lamenting the loss of Vick, remember he was 7-9 last year!

That, is not good.

Certainly, Joey looked more like the Detroit “deer in headlights” Joey than the Oregon star, but it is just one game.

What this team needs to do is give him a chance by protecting him so he isn’t running for his life.

In case you haven’t noticed, half the teams in the NFL right now are 0-1. The Falcons performance was terrible, no doubt, but lets not hammer in the last nail of the coffin just yet. The defense, except for one play, looked solid. Maybe the Falcons will just have to be a defense-oriented football team until Petrino can get the right personnel to fit his offense (by right personnel I mean a quarterback who prefers throwing touchdowns to his team rather than to his opponent).

The Falcons have not had an offensive line that can pass block for several years. Unfortunately, the problem still exists in 2007. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady would have a hard time winning with this offensive line. You can change owners, GM’s, coaches, QB’s or anything else you choose to change about this team, but only improving the offensive line’s ability to pass block will make a significant difference.

It’s ONE GAME, folks. Jeez. Give ‘em a chance. The defense only gave up one TD - and someday that will be a trivia question: “Against whom did NFL Hall of Famer Adrian Peterson score his first NFL touchdown?”

After years of marvelling at MV dodging the ever-present rush, I admit it was a depressing sight watching Harrington meekly succumb to six sacks. Maybe he likes being on the bottom of a pile of big, sweaty men; who knows?

Anyway, look for the current #2 on the QB depth chart (good old whats-his-name) to get some PT next week if Joey can’t shake himself out of his career-long funk.

And what’s with tossing all the rocks at Petrino? They guy can coach. All the talking heads on the NFL shows say so.

What you have is a team that has been mismanaged for years. Vick was merely a smokescreen to mask how bad this team actually is. Blank, McCay, et al, have made so many bad decisions on draft picks and free agents over the years that the Falcons literally have no specialty on the field. Offense, defense, and special teams are all marginal at best. If the Falcons were disbanded tomorrow, I can count maybe 5-7 players in total that would start for another NFL team and none of those players would be considered superstars. This is what happens when you have an overactive owner who hires for positions that he has no knowledge about. Now, the city and fans get to pay the price for all the ineptitude at Flowery Branch. We can only hope that ownership will not continue making the same mistakes over and over again.

I am sort happy people get to see the falcons as they are. M. Vick is gone. Let him R.I.P. He was to the Falcons as gambler with money. Money covers up so many things.

This team needs to be rebuilt. You need a center, right and left tackle, and good size running back, and wide receivers who can catch. Mr. Blank maybe upset that M. Vick is gone, but he needs to be upset with Mr. McKay bacause he built this mess.

Comparing Falcons Quarterbacks:

Good thing you’re not biased. And I’m glad you unnecessarily mentioned race, so I know you couldn’t possibly be prejudiced.

Oh, and Vick didn’t throw a lot of interceptions… he was streaky with accuracy, and he threw stupid interceptions, but not a lot of them. He did fumble at the worst times.

It might help your cases if you true haters at least were within sight of the truth, instead of COMPLETELY coming up with your own.

Since when is Harrington average or coachable? Since when does saying “Yes sir, I understand” before throwing interceptions for touchdowns make you coachable?

This is very very funny. True I enjoyed MV running and making the game more of an MTV sideshow minus Britney Fat Spears> However, I never felt one man made a team. When Vick was there. they lost. when he was sidelined sometimes they lost sometimes they won. The Falcons are terrible. But to be fair, they would have been terrible w/ Vick at QB as well. The Falcons are small, slow, untalented, they have a college coach and they are thin at every position. Vick would have sold some jersies, put some people in the seats, and maybe taken the record from 3-13 to 5-11. Big whoop.

The Falcons have been exposed. Its no secret that they sucked before Vick and will suck after Vick. It’s gonna take at least a couple of years to build an offensive line. During the meantime those non mobile quarterbacks are gonna be in serious trouble if Grady’s Trauma Unit closes. I’m gonna enjoy every minute of Joey getting his butt whacked. He should have looked up and found god while he was on his knees because he’s definetly gonna need him along with a good doctor. Run Joey Run. You necks are trying to shift the blame to McKay which wasn’t even a thought before. It was all Vick’s fault. You got what you asked for now live with it.

Mike your QB comparisons were right on point but you forgot one major thing. Harrington is a loser in the NFL and he helps his team loose where Mike Vick helps his teams win. Being intelligent and smart, articulate, coachable does not make you a good player. You have to have some football talent. Harrington has shon Detroit, Miami and now us he is worthless.

By Najeh Davenpoop

September 11, 2007 2:07 PM | Link to this

Stop blaming Harrington. Yeah, he is a bust who will never be more than an average QB in the NFL. But he is just experiencing what Michael Vick experienced the last two years — when your coaching staff and teammates let you down, it doesn’t matter how good of a QB you are, the team is still not going to be successful. The difference is when you have an exceptional QB like Vick surrounded by trash, he can still have you in playoff contention until the final two weeks of the season. When you have an average QB like Harrington surrounded by trash, you are destined for the #1 pick in the draft. But it’s not all Harrington’s fault — if everything had gone as planned he would be holding a clipboard on the sideline anyway.

Hey Reebok, how bout it takes a team to win games. MV is the best player for on the Falcons team. Right now! You must have forgot that we came within 1 win from the superbowl with Vick at the Helm. And we made the playoffs his first full season as a starter. You see how horrible this team is without Vick. If Vick is on the team you could garauntee at least 7 wins based off of his talent alone. If the other guys show up to play on offense or defense then you could possibly get about 3 or 4 more wins. Oh by the way, Vick was not playing defense last year when Carolina came in and ran the football 26 times down Keith Brookings throat.

I knew from the very moment the Falcons traded Schaub it was a HUGE mistake. Banking soley on MV was irresponsible. As is their tradition, the Falcons go out and get a QB, Joey Harrington, who has been a proven failure to run the show. D.J. Shockley, although a rookie, might have developed into a really good quarterback. We would have at least had Schaub while he was developing. Schaub has always been a better PASSING quarterback than MV ever was! But the Falcons are well known for trading good quarterbacks. (remember Bret Favre?). How many consistently winning NFL teams has Rich McKay built?

The Falcons are reaping what they have sown. How many other teams would not be able to field an average team if they lost their most highly paid athelete. Problem here is that the Falcons gave all their money to one player and were not able to employ other highly qualified players due to lack of funds. Sounds like a poor management decision. It is going to take years to overcome this managerial mistake and may very well be beyond the current administration’s abilities. The truth is, that the Falcons have very few top of the line players. Most of their players are past their prime or are never going to have a prime in professional football. As much as I hate to submit this post, this is the truth as I see it. I certainly hope I am wrong on this observation as I am a long time Falcon fan.

Those of us who have been following the falcons realized a long time ago that we didn’t have a good offensive line or a good receiving core, but we had a QB who could make things happen so defenses were off balance. Now average defenses can say stack the box and go one on one with their receivers. If you went to any practices of the falcons you would have noticed every time Joey went passed ten yards it was an interception even with our corners who are not that great. Shockley wasn’t even given the chance to run with the first team just for later glimpse. Nothing against Joey (he’s just not a winner) history shows. And Yes if Vick was in the game you would have been in the game. Like him or not. But he put himself in the position not to be with us.

As bad as Harrington was (and throwing 2 pick sixes is as bad as it gets)the dude had no chance on Sunday. Everyone here is pointing out how bad the line is. That’s obvious. The bigger concern to me is the complete lack of weapons that are around him, and the three potential bullets in the gun (Jerrious Norwood, Joe Horn and Alge) were completely unused.

Petrino HAS to see that using Dunn for 22 carries a game isn’t gonna get it. He avgd 2.5 yds per carry; Norwood averaged SIX. Norwood also doubled Dunn’s per catch avg. 7 touches a game? Why even have him on the team? Norwood needs to start, and we need to get the ball to the guy who can catch, Horn. He’s not fast but as we saw in preseason, Horn can at least hold on to the ball and move the chains.

Come on Petrino! Let’s see some of that offensive genius we’ve heard so much about. Norwood is the only playmaker on the team but he can’t help us by sitting on the sidelines.

Typical for this town. Everyone dumping on the team after one game. But of course no one mentions:

—that the Vikings have one of the best defensive lines in the NFL —their offensive line has three Pro Bowlers. And Coleman was out. So yes, we did get blown off the line all day, and for good reason.

All three Viking touchdowns were plays you probably won’t see the rest of the season. Two turnovers in one game is about average. It’s just the luck of the Falcons that they were both returned for scores. Something like that happens to a team about once every five years.

Had Boley not overrun the play, Peterson goes down for a loss instead of going 60 yards, the Vikes punt and we may have come back. But Boley was about 5 feet out of position, so therefore the whole franchise is shot until 2014… .

Get a grip, people. One game. My only complaint is that Norwood MUST get at least 15 touches a game and the passing game must make more attempts over 20 yards. They lack the talent to control the clock so they will need to strike fast and have the defense hang on.

They’re heading for about 6 wins, same as it was before the first game. Of course, if they beat the Jags this week all of you clowns saying ‘they suck’ will be stampeding for playoff tickets. At least until they lose to the Panthers the following week, when you’ll say they suck again, and so on …

Funny how mainstream society hides their racist views behind their fake morals. White America says that Vick should never be allowed to play in the league again. Because of what he did to some dogs. Funny thing is, if you asked them if Terrell Owens, Barry Bonds, Allen Iverson, Mike Tyson, Andruw Jones, Gary Sheffield, and many other Black athletes deserved to play in sports they would say the same thing. The only way to beat us is to cheat us. They don’t want thinking calculating black men to lead in anything. I went to the court house yesterday seeking justice, and that’s exactly what I found….”just us”.

Hank Aaron you’re an idiot. Why would you not support Barry when he eclipsed your milestone? He received the same hate that you received except it was packaged differently. He has been bombarded with accusations, allegations, lawsuits, negative press, and the likes. You on the other hand suffered outright racism. They hated you because you were taking a white man’s place in history. Oh gee what would the wife and kids think if a “darkie” eclipses the Babe? You forgot where you came from. And since Vick has been there, he’s been villified by the white community. He was just to dumb to figure out what he stood for. But just like Aaron, he was the first black to pioneer a white man’s position. And through “any means necessary” he had to go in their eyes. But this idiot gave it away.

Tommy - I agree with you completely that it was only one game. One encouraging note about the upcoming Jags - they just gave up 250+ yards on the ground to the Titans, who are not exactly loaded with elite NFL talent. If we can’t find a way to exploit that, it’s even worse than we think it is. I think they’ll play much better on Sunday.

You are an idiot. Pioneer a white man’s position? What position is that, the QB? Do the names Randall Cunningham, Doug Williams and Donovan McNabb among others mean anything to you?

Most of those on your list are disliked because they are/were punks and/or thugs. Most people don’t support punks and thugs—except other punks and thugs.

And GW:

Brian will win the Heisman and he will be drafted by the Falcons as thier #1—care to remind us who his coach was in college? Why the Falcon’s head coach. If the head coach isn’t too small market to coach the Falcons, then Brian Brohm isn’t too small market to lead the Falcons as the QB.

You are full of it. I hope you have to eat all those “knowledgeable” comments. Yeah, I know, so do you.

We will see. One game does not make a season. Did MV7 ever throw an interception? Naw, that was probably just my imagination. Did he ever get sacked six times in one game? Naw, imagining again.

Mark Bradley, I see your point regarding what could become of the 2007 Atlanta Falcons. From what I saw of Sunday’s performance, I am awfully afraid this season has 3-13 written all over it. The Falcons looked absolutely pitiful on Sunday against a bad team. I do think these Falcons are better coached this year than last. Everybody talked about the quarterback situation without Michael Vick was going to be absolutely brutal and Joey Harrington obviously did nothing on Sunday to change the thinking on that. Sunday was just the first game true, but I agree with you-things could conceivably get even uglier for the 2007 Falcons. If they do finish with the worst record in the NFL and get to draft another Heisman Trophy quarterback if the case may be, I sure hope he is an individual who can keep himself out of trouble off the field and will be the perfect role model. Michael Vick has obviously failed at both. Excellent article.

Let no Vick apologist dey this fact —- the problems confronting this team were caused by the criminal behavior of Vick —- a quarterback spoiled and conjoled by the team’s management.

Regarding this team, I’d like to see a win; however, why panic over one or two losses. We had 9 last year and 8 the year before with the “wonderkin” under center.

I have confidence in the coaches and know the team will respond in due time.

Harrington was never intended to be a starter for the Falcons, your dog fighting pal, MV caused that to happen.

And why would anyone not blinded by racism miss Vick—most teams would be sending their QB off to backup land after posting a 15-17 record. Some smart teams even send their QBs away that had winning records and better ratings than Vick once it was clear their QB choice was not the right choice (See Brian Greise and Jake Plummer).

But it’ll be okay once Harrington is back to backup status and Brian Brohm is the Falcon QB.

You have a backup QB that has failed at every stop in his NFL career as your starting QB, your otherwise starting QB is going to prison, an untested college coach (from a second tier conference no less) as head coach, an offensive line that can’t open holes for the running game or protect the passer, a defensive line that can’t stop the run or put pressure on the other QB, receivers that can’t catch and a secondary that can’t cover.

Harrington didn’t cause it. He never dreamed of being thrown into this situation. He’s probably in shock too.

Besides, it shouldn’t be unexpected for them to play without enthusiasm when the whole world is telling them that they are crap without Vick. OK, the time has come to stop crying over Vick. The dude made his choices, some extremely bad choices, and is no longer a part of this team. He is history. Done. Even if he does somehow return to the NFL in, say, two or three years, it won’t be with the Falcons. So forget him. Besides, even with Vick behind center, the Falcons were never really that successful anyway. If Vick had played Sunday, the Falcons would almost certainly have had more rushing yards but they would have lost the game anyway, say 24-10 or 31-10. The biggest complaint I have against the Falcons is they traded Schaub before they knew whether Vick would be indicted by the Feds. I will never understand that as long as I live. Oh, and under Schaub, the Texans are already 1-0. Yes, yet another brilliant move by the Falcon front office!

I’d ordinarily agree with those who say, “It’s just one game.” But these Falcons, given the nature of their offseason, didn’t enter the season the way most teams do. And I submit that start-of-the-season momentum is a powerful force, for both good and bad, in football. Remember how quickly the 2003 season got away? Remember how the 2004 season, when the Falcons started 4-0, kept building on itself and wound up with the team playing for the NFC title?

This team doesn’t have to be that good this year; they have to work on learning the system and gradually replacing Mora’s players. It’s gonna take time; get out and support ‘em anyway. The next three years are gonna pass regardless; run Petrino out (who I think knows exactly what he’s doing) and we’ll just be starting over again. Be calm. Joey wasn’t meant to be the answer; there’ll be a different starter next year.

The Gift and the Curse of the NFL! By Chuck Smith

I’ll never forget that day. The year was January 20th 1979 when I and my dad sat down with my two brothers to watch our first Super Bowl. Super Bowl X111. It was a cold day as I remember in the city of Athens, Ga. The Pittsburgh Steelers were the talk of the sports world. So were the Dallas Cowboys. My mom was in love with a handsome, smooth running back named Tony Dorsett. She digged the boys with the big star on the side of there helmets. My dad grew up a huge Jim Brown fan (considered by most NFL experts as one the best NFL football players/political activist/actor ever!) my dad described him as “A man’s man”. That was the day when I fell in love with the NFL! As I watched this unbelievable performance by the Steelers to win there 3rd World Championship. I thought “ I want to play football, and play in the Super Bowl” which I would later do. Modern day worriors with a mission! Watching the camaraderie, respect, effort, the love of the game that Franco Harris, “Mean” Joe Green, Lynn Swann commanded by being professional, accountable, made me realize the Nil is something special. As a retired nine year NFL veteran. I have been a part of the NFL as a fan or player for 28 years. So I have been doing an unofficial study of the league basically my entire life. The love started at 9 and the passion continues at 37.

The Gift! Another special moment happened on that day that helped shape the NFL we know today. The power of TV! The NBC telecast was viewed in 35,090,000 homes, by an estimated 96.6 million fans! The NFL finally got what it wanted. TV muscle! Equal more revenue. Simple math. More fans, sell more jerseys. Great games, fun, intriguing players, mean more support from corporate America. This is the day when more than just some snotty nose kid from Athens, ga was watching. Apparently dads, moms, sons, daughters alike started watching. In my opinion that was the day when the term” Baseball is America’s pastime, but football is America’s passion! Truly started. Let’s fast forward to the year 1992. I was drafted to the Atlanta Falcons in the 2nd round of the NFL draft. I hired an agent out of Memphis named Jimmy Sexton (Athletic Resource Management). He great clients like Darryl Green (Wash.Redskins), Scottie Pippen (Chi.Bulls), today the roster is like the who’s who in sports. Steve Spurrier (So. Car.), Bill Parcells( cowboys/giants), Nick Saban (Alabama), current NFL stars in Pro Bowlers in Phillip Rivers (chargers), Jason Whitten (Cowboys), Jeremiah Trotter (Philly), and soon to be hall of famer the great Isaac Bruce of the St. Louis Rams. There were two men that would shape my football life: one wasn’t a client Deion Sanders. We were teammates and friends when he played for the Atlanta Falcons. And the legend that helped shapes my career and the NFL: The Minister of Defense, Reggie White. I met Rag as a junior at Tennessee. He was working out when I walked up to this literally larger than life figure, nervously asking “will you teach me how to rush the quarterback?” he said “yes”, “only if you come to church with me and my wife Sarah” I said “time, place, and I don’t have a suit” he laughed and I knew this was the beginning of a life long relationship. That year Reggie sued the NFL (White vs NFL) Former NY Jet Freeman Mcneil sued years earlier, but he was no Reggie White. He was going to be the biggest free agent in the NFL’s history the next year and wanted his freedom. He was fighting the “Rozzelle Rule” which barred players from moving to another team once there contract expires. Reggie wanted the opportunity to shop himself around to the team that gives him the best opportunity to win. He chose Green Bay the next year leaving Philly. The players won, we celebrated! The NFL owners were disappointed to say the least. The players got what they wanted. A competitive, buyers market where you are rewarded for your play and can make some big time money! Through out the rest of the ninety’s the league thrived. Every year record breaking contracts. More fans, the NFL brand was growing like a George W. Bush lie. You know I had to take that shot. TV revenue money was in another stratosphere.Young polished growing legends were carrying the mantle of what pro league should look like. Names like Eddie George, Jerome Bettis, Terrell Davis, Steve Mcnair, Strahan, manning, mcnabb to name a few made the NFL the poster child for the way players and a pro league could thrive. Oh, established stars were all over the league like Jerry Rice, Steve Young, Troy Aikman, Reggie White, John Elway, Brett Farve, Mike Singletary, Jackie Slater, Deion Sanders, Emmitt Smith, and Marshall Faulk. Also the NFL helped grow its brand with smart public relation maneuvers. Like NFL 101 for women, and advertising a family friendly atmosphere. Bring the women and kids. Madison Avenue loved it so did the NFL upper brass. No one was happier then commissioner at that time Paul Tagliabue.

The Curse! Things seemed to have changed in my opinion and I remember when. The year was 2000 and a superstar named Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens was charged with murder in the killing of two men in following a party of buckhead in Atlanta, Ga… He later pleaded to obstruction, a misdemeanor, charges were dismissed. A public relations nightmare! The likes the NFL had never seen. Arguably the greatest defensive player of our generation, one of the NFL’s poster boys, accused of murder. The Super Bowl in Atlanta, something was different. This is where the curse of success that Reggie White, Freeman McNeil, Joe Montana and former NFL players couldn’t have dreamed. My father always told me if I was blessed to play in the NFL you owe it to yourself and your teammates to always be accountable for your actions on and off the field. I live by that as I write! And as I told my friend Robert Porcher (Detroit Lions) at a party during the 2000 super bowl in Atlanta, “no one is wearing suites, or collared shirts at these corporate functions” “and all these dudes look like rock or rap/actors, stars coming in with the posse’s, looking more like former gangster rap group nwa as opposed to professional athletes at there crown jewel of the NFL season, the Super Bowl” as I observed. The entertainers get the props. The “Y” generation grew up following the lives of the entertainers. Let me explain. See when all that money was being made by the league. It trickled down to the players. And deservedly so. . The veteran minimum wages were so much higher than the owners wanted that they started using young players. In other words cheap labor. Eventually the 9 to 10 year NFL veteran became as extinct as a tyrannosaurus rex. Superstars get the bulk of the money. So to avoid high salaries, let’s sign young players who aren’t physically, mentally or as experienced as the vets but we save money. Bad move. Now we have what I started calling generation why? Why do they do what they do? This “Y” generation grew up following the lives of the entertainers. It seemed to me the NFL players in the MTV/Bet/internet/satellite TV/reality generation are being followers. Reality has been lost in sports. This was the start that set the climate to the problems we see today. I know you don’t want to hear this; the NFL is a microcosm of society. A few bad apples can ruin the rep of a league. But over 30 arrests in one year. It’s an NFL problem and society problem. We push kids early so they can get the fast bucks, youth sports have never been more lucrative. We glamorize the dysfunctional celebrities (see Whitney n bobby, Paris, to name a few), it’s acceptable. So are you surprised there was guy released from jail to play in the super bowl, I wasn’t. Are you surprised that Maurice claret was wearing a bullet proof vest and rolling around like O-dog from menace to Society, I’m not. Does the Chris henry in cincy not have the money to pay for speeding tickets? Why would Vick flip the bird, blow off that flight to D.C, have dog fighting indictments, is Pac-man really that immature, did it floor you that Randy Moss was on TV saying to hundreds of millions that I smoke weed. Even if you do, why say something that will bring negativity to yourself and team. Common sense is important in the real world as well as the fantasy, we call pro football. The NFL has never been more visible than, as well as it’s players. It’s known now that the new king honcho Roger Goodell isn’t playing games with the players. I agree. So, if some team is paying you 8 million a year. And you can’t stay out of the press for negative habitual actions. You don’t deserve the blessing. The NFL is not a right, but absolutely, a privilege! Keep it in the road.

It is amazing that people now want to blame the same terrible o line, wr’s, and just overall horrible players that MV had to work with but never gave him the benefit of the doubt. Joey seems like a nice guy but he gets to see what MV had to go through year after year. People said Vick was the problem but this year will show everyone that he really had no help. This team will be exposed all season long. Vick made a terrible team at least decent. Rich HAS TO GO ASAP. This guy has blown draft after draft and free agent signing after free agent signing. You wanted Vick gone now you have your wish. If Vick was as bad as most of you said then any qb should be an upgrade. Im not buying the he screwed this team argument. Brian Brohm, will fair no better han Harrington in the NFL. WATCH AND SEE!All you guys that see him throw for 3 and 4 hundred yards a game in college and think its going to be that way at the next level are fooling themselves. The Falcons should be looking at MACFADDEN. A Norwood, Macfadden combo would be scary. Dunn is done. Petrino will be ready to go back to college after this season anyway. We should have drafted Peterson this year. There were plenty of defensive ends on the board. Just another Mccay blunder.
