Hard to be positive after opener like that

Terence Moore

Minneapolis — If this is indicative of things to come for the Falcons, they already are history for so many reasons. We needn’t go further than this: Courtesy of their 24-3 blowout Sunday at the Metrodome to begin the post-Michael Vick era, they were more defensive after the game than they were during it.

Such is the way of losers. When your offense is pathetic for an entire afternoon, and when your defense gets torched by a gifted running back who nevertheless is making his debut as a rookie, and when your play is lethargic in general, you whine in the aftermath about anything or anybody but yourself.

What a mess, and not only because the Falcons were a deadly combination of bad and boring. If one corner of the visitors’ locker room wasn’t imploring media folks “to stay positive” and to stop “being so negative,” the other side was doing the same.

So what about the stuff that really should matter to the Falcons, which is having a team under first-year NFL head coach Bobby Petrino flashing signs of imploding with another horrific outing or three?

“I mean, we want to be great, because we spent this whole minicamp and training camp running to the ball, trying to stop the run and that whole mentality, but we didn’t respond the way that we should,” said cornerback DeAngelo Hall, among those who refused to ignore the Falcons’ horrors by trying to shift the conversation. “We obviously had spurts where we did stop the run, but we had them backed up too many times and let them off the hook. We all have to look in the mirror to see what we have to do to get better and to get this team better.”

Just in case that mirror is a little foggy for the Falcons after their silly yapping about criticism, here’s some help. They allowed Adrian Peterson to rush for 103 yards and catch a pass for 60 more yards and a touchdown. They had no hurries or sacks of Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, not to be confused with Fran Tarkenton anytime soon. They relinquished six sacks. Their offense never reached the red zone. They saw quarterback Joey Harrington throw two interceptions and saw his 61.8 passer rating drop his record as an NFL starter to 23-44.

Sounds like the Falcons miss the other guy who is headed for prison after his dogfighting issues. In fact, five years ago, when the Falcons were last at the Metrodome, the other guy weaved his way through the Vikings’ entire defense in overtime for victory and continued his sprint from the end zone to the locker room.

Added Hall of Vick, who, if nothing else, was as dramatic as the current Falcons are dull, “We haven’t been preparing with him. He hasn’t been on the field with us. I mean, it’s not like the guy has been with us in minicamp and throughout training camp, and all of a sudden he’s not there for the game.”

That’s true, but there only was one No. 7, among the all-time elite of athletes. Given his highly publicized fall from NFL star to convicted felon and his sentencing that is three months away, the Falcons are smothered by his shadow. Whether they wish to admit it or not.

“I know what people are getting at when they ask [about Vick], but how do I lead? How do I take care of these young guys and keep them focused on the task at hand?” said tight end Alge Crumpler, one of the Falcons’ five captains. “When I get home and shoot a text message to Mike, that’s on my time. When I walk through the door at Flowery Branch, I’m working for the guys we’re suiting up. Period. I’m not going to sit here for 16 weeks and play the ‘what if’ game.”

The Falcons just need to play the game. Period. That’s opposed to the blame game.

We didn’t lose because number 7 was absent—-we lost to a better prepared team that wanted to win. Same old Falcons-some things never change. Thank God I am a Tech fan, cause this is gonna be a painful next 15 games to watch.

T- I agree. We are in for a LONG, LONG, LONG year. There is a reason why Mr. Harrington has a bad QB rating - he stinks. He looks lost in the pocket and has the arm of a 4th grade girl. He can’t throw past 15 yards. I love the Falcons, but I really hate this team. :(

This is a new coaching staff and I think it’s the right one. Petrino’s scheme is the opposite of Mora’s, which can only be a good thing. However, it takes a year or two at least to get the right players in and get them to jell, and all you people thinking it can be done in one game with a backup QB (and yes, Harrington was never intended to be the starter for a reason and won’t be next year) are simply retarded. They’ve been through a lot; give them a chance. The “fans” of this city make me sick, as do some of the muck-raking, grandstanding columnists of this paper. Yes, you’re the main one, Terrence. Please try for once to write a column that’s neither racist nor hopelessly negative. I challenge you.

I’m a big Vick fan and would like to see him return to the team but this is the 2007 season and Vick is not here so I am pulling for the home team. Now that being said, there was nothing in this game today that made me feel positve. I was more optimistic on Saturday. I’m going to give them 2 more games at the most and if we start 0-3, then I will be doing something else on Sundays. This is like Doug Johnson all over again. I feel suckered into thinking that we could at least compete and this game today makes me think that we have no chance. I wanted to believe that Joey was in bad situations but now, It looks like what everyone has said is true. He does not take all the blame for certain but he is the face of the Falcons now if only because he replaced Vick….I just feel bad for the other guys like Dunn and Horn

Justdogs - I understand to a degree how you feel, because there is such hypocrisy in how certain animals are valued above others, and how there are much worse human beings in the NFL than Michael Vick.

But there is NO WAY you can ignore what he did… I think they should settle on a specific suspension, and not keep him “banned for life,” but there’s no way he doesn’t deserve punishment, even with all the money he’s lost.

And if anybody takes the blame for the sorry state of his life and the sorry state of the Falcons, it’s MV7. And I think he gets that now.

No, the Falcons lost because Joey Harrington is a backup QB, and nothing more. The Falcons were not prepared for the horrible pre-season melodrama involving Vick, and now it shows up at the worst time. Had this been a pre season game, no-one would care. But this one hurts, because this team does not comfortable at all with Harrington at the helm.

The Falcons have to have time to find out what Harrington is capable of doing and give him time to adjust, he did appear several times to settle in the pocket. His abilities are much different than that of Vick’s and therefore the playmaking schemes had to be re-designed to fit Harrington and nobody else. Over a period of time he will perform better. Why is Dunn still playing more than Jerious Norwood? When babinuex is suspended who will start? Why did they play so much zone vs. those young inexperienced recievers? Is Harrington anything other that a slight improvement to Kittner and Johnson? Why did Boley play so poorly? Why are the players making so many excuses for a lose? Last but not least can we please draft Dennis Dixon in the second round next season?

I hated to see my team get pushed all over the field, but karma is a mother. You wanted Vick gone, never realizing that he masked many deficiencies on this team. In fact, he was blamed for most of them. Unfortunately, Vick was the instrument of his own demise. He will go to prison and may never play in the NFL again. But the Falcons may not recover from this by the time he could be eligible to play again. We are about to enter another dark age as a franchise.

Thank God for Georgia Tech—-and this coming from a 1969 Florida grad— or all Atlanta would have are The Falcons, Hawks and Thrashers and a baseball team that somehow managed to string together 523—it is that many isn’t it??—division titles while winning ONE LESS!!!!!!!!! World Series Championship than an expansion team with no fans, no stadium, no money, no viable broadcast deals and for all practical purposes no owner—-Really Nice!!!!!!

Of course I guess most people in Atlanta pull for a football team coached by a Mother Teresa clone with all the fire of the French Militia, and with an offensive coordinator with a surname resembling that of a famous clown—-of course after the play calling???????????? And now Botox Boy is being taunted by the Old HBC who has just pointed out Georgia’s 5!!!!!! game losing streak in the SEC.

How can you turn on the Falcons after one freakin game? Like others have stated…it takes time to infuse a new system!! Give the Falcons a chance.

The whole Vick experience was stagnating…yeah he brought excitement and drew the fans, but he has problems being more than a running back. I still say the 2004 NFC divisional playoff game was the most exciting football game I’ve ever attended…and that was largely because of Vick. But two under- achieving seasons later…and what do we have to show for it?

By Musashi

September 9, 2007 11:16 PM | Link to this

The Falcons lost not because MVick was not around. They lost because of a number of things (i.e. poor protection, no pass rush, poor run defense, etc.).

If Vick played, the result would have been the same given how the rest of the team played. The excuses will be a bit more different and it would go something like “Vick is still learning Petrino’s system” - a familiar refrain through the Vick era.

The point is that as Falcons fans we should not get too hung up on MVick because he is no longer with the team and there is no way he will be able to come back this season. Let’s just support our Falcons team and wish them the best - hey it’s only the first game.

BTW, Schaub looked solid in his debut. Should we play the what-if game? Absolutely not. Let’s move forward and support the team.

Wow. Terrence, this article was horrid. Not one quote you cited is remotely indicative of the message you’re trying to get across. In fact, Joe Horn was quoted after the game saying “…We didn’t get it done. You have to tip your hats to the Minnesota Vikings defense”. Were you in the locker room Terrence? At the game? Did you really have to create a premise to write an article instead of reviewing the facts of the game and perhaps proving some insight on the Falcons play? I’m sorry, this article was just plain terrible.

To Eric C.

The Falcons may not have anything to show for since 2004, but they did have excitement, a sold out Dome (which has never been heard of in Atlanta), and interest in a Atlanta football team. At the end of the season, only one team can be the champion. Look how long it took Peyton Manning to win a SuperBowl. It took him almost 10yrs. He came into the NFL in 1996 and didnt win until 2006. Vick came into the league in 2001. QB’s rarely come into the league and win Championships quickly. Drew Brees was in the same draft as Vick and he hasnt won a championship yet.

Bright spots: The defense only gave up 10 points; Harrington’s 2nd interception was not really his fault; Dunn looked like he hasn’t lost much. My impression before Peterson’s long TD? The Falcons offense looked competent on that one long drive that resulted in the missed field goal, but they also generally looked very dull—where was the dynamic play-calling we were all expecting? Where were the “secret” plays that were going to be unveiled?

I find it amazing that even while being suspended Vick is still being blamed for this sorry team losing. Let some of these fans tell it he sucked anyway so any qb should have been an improvement. Well you guys got what you wanted. A tall, drop back, pocket qb who can see over the line . Funny thing is none of that mattered today. I saw more batted balls today than I saw all of last season with Vick who couldnt see over the line according to some of these fans. Like others who said before the season started, the guy numbers are worse than Vick’s so how in the hell of a sudden he is going to become this great qb? . Warrick Dunn is done. A lot of the running yards we ammased was because of the dual threat of Vick but since he isnt here we can cancell that. The o line still sucks, wrs still dropping passes so it seems like the team from the last few years. As some have said on here, the team was and is average at best but Vick hid a lot of those weaknesses because he was such a threat. This will be a long season. Tom what game did you see because Harrington looked horrible. He held on to the ball too long, didnt read the defense well, and made horrible decisions. It is a good reason why this is his 3rd team and why he has more interceptions than touchdowns. WELL YOU PEOPLE WANTED VICK GONE NOW HE IS DEAL WITH IT. HA HA HA

By common sense

September 10, 2007 12:23 AM | Link to this

Harrington is not a bad quarterback, he just requires a very solid offensive line like any passing QB does. Peyton Manning wasn’t even all that great until he told Dungy to beef up the o’line or he was gone. Joey didn’t stand a chance because the lousy o’line didn’t protect him.

OK, we lost!! It is not the Falcons fault that Vick is no longer with them. I don’t know why people are so in love with Vick, he did not love his fans or he would still be playing football. He chose to do illegal activities, he did not need the money, it was for fun!! If you believe that dog fighting is a sport, it is still ILLEGAL, it is gambling, it is ILLEGAL. That is the end of the story. He liked his gambling more than he liked playing football. Get over him and the reporters need to stop mentioning his name every five seconds. He’s gone. Go Falcons.

At this point, I’m holding on to some optimism. I think fans need to have a little patience with the team - a little patience with the new coaching staff and personnel. This was a tough game to watch, but there were a few flickers of light. It going to take a few tough games for this team to come around and for petrino’s new O to jell. I see the Falcons continuing to improve and possible surprise by the end of the season.

Oh..and for all of you jumping on Harrington. Besides the bad interception early, he was not to blame for this loss. The Falcons could not really establish a running game and the defense was porous. Harrington was rather efficient otherwise. (We all know the 2nd INT was not his fault)

Hey Moore…Let’s stop the Vick “what-if” games. I think fans are more that tired of hearing on that subject.
