Dogs’ win much better than beating a cupcake
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Athens — The trouble with playing your opener against somebody decent is that — duh — you could lose and mess up your nice pretty season. (Ask the former genius Charlie Weis.) The benefit is that if you win, you can’t say you haven’t been tested. And being tested early is, provided you pass the exam, a wholly beneficial thing.
As the Georgia historian Jeff Dantzler noted Saturday, most every big Bulldog autumn has begun not with a whimper but with a bang. Each of Georgia’s last 10 championship years commenced with a victory — or, in the case of 1968, a famous tie on the new-fangled Astroturf of Neyland Stadium that Sports Illustrated labeled “A Rouser On A Rug” — against a brand name. (Yes, we’re including the now-feared Boise State, which came here and got blitzed on Sept. 3, 2005.)
Think about it. Would Herschel Walker have become an instant legend had he trampled Joe Blow from Kokomo, as opposed to Bill Bates of high-falutin’ Tennessee? Would the breakthrough Bulldogs of 2002 have had the wherewithal to win at South Carolina and Alabama and Auburn if they hadn’t been pushed to the limit by Clemson on opening night?
Oklahoma State, as has been noted, isn’t to be confused with Utah State or Arkansas State or Western Kentucky. The Cowboys hold membership in the brawny Big 12 and are largely bankrolled by the billionaire T. Boone Pickens, who was on hand with Mrs. Pickens, who was wearing orange slacks. (Christian Dior? Karl Lagerfeld? Donna Karan?) OSU beat both Nebraska and Alabama last season — granted, this would have seemed a bigger deal 35 years ago - and arrived bearing a statistically imposing offense. Mess around with the Cowboys and you might get lassoed.
Georgia didn’t mess around. This wasn’t a wipeout-from-the-very-first-minute on the order of that Boise State thrashing, but it was comprehensive enough to indicate the Bulldogs are primed yet again. Said tailback Thomas Brown: “There was a lot more hype because it was Oklahoma State.”
To their credit, the Bulldogs answered every Cowboy challenge and were clearly the more talented and more disciplined side. If they didn’t do anything that made you say “wow” — or, this being Georgia, “woof” — it was only because Georgia under Mark Richt has established such exalted standards.
Matthew Stafford threw the ball only to teammates. Brown and Knowshon Moreno ran hard and well. (It’s already apparent Knowshon knows all about the spin move, which he popped to spectacular effect in the first half and called “mostly reaction.”) The receivers dropped only one pass.
The defense yielded two touchdowns but held the Cowboys to 266 yards, 145 off last season’s average. Said tackle Jeff Owens: “We knew they were a great football team and we had to stop the run early and take all their momentum, and that’s what we did.”
It not quite artistry, this was still more than a simple exercise. Georgia scheduled outside its Southern comfort zone and lived to tell about it. This augurs well for next week, when the Evil Genius comes calling, and the weeks beyond. Lest we forget, one of the reasons last season went so wrong so fast was that September had been so soft.
The 2006 Bulldogs got to 5-0, barely, without playing anyone of consequence. Then Tennessee rolled into town and rolled out having scored 51 points. Georgia would win only one of its next four games, infamously losing to Vanderbilt and Kentucky. These Bulldogs won’t lose so many. These Bulldogs should win at least 10.
Sure, they could’ve posted bigger numbers against lesser opposition, but that would have served no purpose. There’s nothing to gain by picking on some small helpless school like Appalachian State.
OK, bad example.

First! Woot!
Great, solid game. Excellent preparation by the coaches and Stafford looked like a polished QB, not a sophomore starting his first full year. I’m not sure it’s a statement victory, but it sure is a start! Let the SEC know that these Dawgs are not those of last year (sorry JT3!).

OMG !!!!!!!!!!.. is it just me or did knowshon make a statemate in this game. I mean he made plays when UGA needed it the most. CMR needs to consider giving him the rock next week against USC. Stafford had a great game and the only reason why he didn’t pass for more yards than he did is b/c the offense wanted to burn as much time as possible so the OK. St. offense would stay off the field. Excellent game plan CMR and coach Bobo!!!!!!!!!!!!!..The so called experts, Lou Holtz, said that this was gonna be an upset…well so much for that. Many say that the big concern was gonna be the defense as well as the O-line….well I personally give them a B+. And many believe that they should only get better with time….I really hate to say this but….Good for Tech today.. they looked pretty solid, and it looks to be an exciting match-up around Thanksgiving this year. Last…..Tebow showed he can throw the football…..AGAINST WESTERN KENTUCKY….big deal!!!!!!!!!… you know Joe. T threw pretty good against them last year. soooo thats not saying alot. Stafford has more than doubled his performace a year ago…Soooooooo with that being said…UGA may, and thats a big may, have one loss going into the UF match up….and which UGA WILL WIN, or ill eat my words

Lou Holtz??? Good grief, that old coot ALWAYS predicts a Bulldog loss..he can’t stand us! I guess it goes back to the whippings he used to get when he was South Carolina’s head coach. Anyway…Once again he was wrong. BUT..tooting my own horn..a coupla days ago on this very Blog site…I told all of you what Ga was gonna do..and guess what? They did it..exactly to my script. The D-Man will be back next week with a prediction on the South Carolina game. GO DAWGS!!

Is Mark Richt crazy or just durn blind!! Mark Richt, KNOWSHON is the best runningback on that team and it’s about time for you to start using commonsense and realize that. KNOWSHON MORENO is the kind of runningback who can break a game wide open. He is a game changer who can get you 150 yards per game. Mark Richt, if you want to win a national championship, then give KNOWSHON 25 carries a game. GIVE KNOWSHON THE DURN BALL MAN!!!!!!!!

Tony,
Richt just beat a highly touted Ok State team while playing 18 freshman. He is running the winningest program in college football over the last 5 years. He dont need your durn advice.
He DID give Knowshon the Ball and he gave it to him alot. Last I check Thomas Brown aint exactly a sub par back. We have multiple good backs and they deserve carries too. I think I will trust CMR on this one.

1st lets tip the hat to Coach Bobo for a well planned and executed offense. Did you realize UGA could have had 2 more easy scores at the end but gracefully gave the ball back to OSU?
2nd tip goes to Coach Martinez for a great scheme against a highly touted offense. That defense is young, but you sure can see a lot of potential with the talent on the field, and Willy is licking his chops right now. Now its time to turn to preparing for Spurrier.
South Carolina game is always a messy dirty game that ends within 6 points, no matter how good or bad the other team is. I’m sure Lou Holtz (former Six Flags dancing mascot) will once again choose S. Carolina in this game, but once again he will be picking with his heart and not his ‘brain’.
3rd and last tip goes to Moreno & Brown & Bailey. How nice was it to see Sean Bailey running routes and catching balls again? T Brown had surgery on that knee 9 months ago? Couldn’t tell, what an athlete! Moreno, you’ve got nothing but upside!
Goooooo Dawgs!! Sic ‘em!!

Be patient, Tony. Knowshon looked fantastic and, by the end of September, everybody will know his name. But we need lots of weapons and we need everybody to be sharp. CMR doesn’t need to show everything in the playbook the first game. By the time we get to Jacksonville, we could have a very fine team on our hands. I want to praise the O line and the defense. Both more than rose to the occasion. I hate to say it, but congratulations Jackets. I hope you will them all until the last Saturday in November. Now let’s get ready for the Gamecocks. Go Dawgs!

Even though the final margin of victory wasn’t as big, I thought this was a more impressive win than the one over Boise State in ‘05. In that game, we threw them off on the very first play and from that moment forward the outcome wasn’t in doubt; they never played like the Boise State team they usually are. But against Oklahoma State, we actually had to scrap for a few quarters and still came out winners. OSU did exactly the same stuff they usually execute very well, we just didn’t let them do it. This was one of only two teams last year to average more than 200 yards per game both running and passing, but last night I don’t think they topped 200 in either column. We held them scoreless in the second half.
Best of all, the team played smart — only one dropped pass, no turnovers at all, great tackling by a defense that didn’t get fooled when OSU tried to pull something tricky. A great effort by our players, and a fantastic job of preparation by our coaching staff. We’re incredibly proud of you guys and really looking forward to the rest of the season!
GO DAWGS!!!!

One thing that stood out to me was no field goals. Someone tell us when the last time a UGA team played a game and didn’t kick one. Another thing was the 75% completion rate for Matt Stafford. He was very sharpe and will only get better. The O-line answered a lot of questions and looked good. Good show DAWGS, looking forward to next weeks game with South Carolina.

Cheese also had two false starts. Moreno got 20 carries. Tony Wilson is a WR Blocking machine. Brandon Miller and Ellerbe are going to be fantastic this year. Mikey Henderson can score any time he touches the ball. tech lies and cheats. Thats all for today. My head is killing me.

When the 1st full Saturday of the ‘07 season was said & done, I’ve validated my beliefs of these FOUR things: 1) Notre Dame is overrated, as usual. 2) The BIG TEN is overrated, as usual. 3) These are PRIME examples of why we need NO PRE-SEASON RANKINGS !! 4) GEORGIA is just as good as I suspected. Shutup Tony! I am sick of people coming onto blogs like this and feeling they need to be insulting to get their point across. Coach Richt isn’t crazy or blind. He gave the kid 20 carries for goodness sake. When was the last time he gave anyone in their platoon system 20 carries? He knows what he has, give him time to use all the weapons we have.
We have much bigger fish to fry this season than Oklahoma State. Lets keep our eye on the real prize here.

After watching the Georgia game, I watched as much as I could of both Auburn and Tennessee games. Both of those teams defenses looked as if they were moving in slow motion compared to Georgia’s defense. Georgia is really quick and fast, and “speed kills.” I was especially impressed by the linebackers, who I believe by the end of the year, could go down as the best group in a long time.

Having Sean Bailey back is huge. And if you are a receiver on this team, you’d better catch the ball or you won’t see the field. That’s a good thing.

Wooff!! What a defensive suprise. To get the kind of pressure & penetration with the front 4 without having to blitz linebackers was impressive. Howard is going to be interesting to watch at defensive end, could beat alot of tackles with that quick first step. Our receiving corps will be one of the most productive in the country this year. Incredible to see guys like Bailey & Brown do so well after season ending injuries. Moreno was great, but Brown ( & Lumpkin before hurting his thumb) have earned their carries. You gotta pass block too. Richt has respect for his 2 seniors, just like all his players respect him. Moreno will get his due. Go Dawgs

Tony,
Richt did give Moreno the ball. 22 touches? 20 rushes, nearly double that of anyone else. 22 touches for a freshman in his first game is a huge amount.
You would have a legitimate beef if Knowshon only got 6-8 carries.

Great comments one and all…agree especially with Old Dawg (old and wise)…but want to add that if you are good enough to play for UGA as a freshman, you can play anywhere for anybody. CMR and CMB did a great job getting them ready to play. They will only get better. Please note the best three conferences in Football…AFC, NFC and the SEC…HD PS..yes, I know UT lost…tough one on the road…they played well, can’t win them all.

As much as I loathe Lou The Lisper Holtz, he actually picked the Dawgs to win. it was noted Georgia-hater Mark May who picked the Pokies to win because of the their “high powered” offense.
I guess 70 yards rushing and 190 yards passing is what Mark May and the Big XII consider “high powered.”
My favorite part of the game? All of the TWO TIGHT I-FORMATION WE RAN!!!
Slobbernocker football, baby!!!
And while Brown looked okay (still couldn’t run up the gut all that well, two yard gains most of the time) Moreno is a MAN!!! I know his final line says 20 carries for 70 yards, but it was really more like 12 carries for 60 yards. Those last eight carries were into the teeth of 10 man front, and as good as he is, not even Herschal could have gotten much more against a 10 man front.
Man, this game was freaking awesome!!!
Bring on South Carolina, who struggled with LA Lafeyette. Bring on their delinquent QB. Bring on their “genius” head coach (it’s easy to label yourself a genius when you work with great talent).

What I don’t think has been mentioned yet is something that was glaring to me. I can’t remember the last time I saw the wide receivers block like that downfield. What an effort! In particular, MoMass made a spectacular block that allowed a TD.
Also, nice try Ok St for trying to “corner kick” to pin Mikey. He took two steps back, had the patience to wait for another wonderful block to get set up, and headed to the bridge!
Again, blocking was impressive…being it was the 1st game, and you kinda expect bigger mistakes. Hats off to the receivers, Coach John Eason,…and shoot, the whole team. I think y’all “get it” now with the blocking.
(p.s. Kelin, keep bringing the lumber, Dawg! Your energy is electric!)

Kudos to #12 Brandon Miller. I’ve been on his case for 2 years but he played great last night. His block on Kelin Johnson’s interception return was the highlight of the game for me. If we can get the same pass rush on South Carolina we should win.

Two quick things:
Kelin Johnson - Thank you for being a smack-you-in-the-mouth intimidator. You are one in a long line of hard hitting safeties, and you were in top form. Keep it up!
I really liked playing a tougher opponent than normal the first week out… It felt like the Dawgs accomplished something rather than using the game as a warm-up. Let’s make this happen again. Is Michigan already booked? :)

@jim: In the post-game press conference, CMR siad he didn’t go fo the field goals because of the penetration that OSU was getting on the kick team. He said they really need to work on that and he expects South Carolina to have studied the game and push hard there as well.

What about the Knowshon run on third down where we needed two yards or so. Knowshown hit the hole, smashed the big ole middle linebacker and pushed him back another two yards. Not only is he fast as lightning he can hit.
Also watched Figgins alot since he is from Columbus… Alot of times he was an inillegible receiver because of a wide out being up on the line. Every time I watched he manhandled the guy he was blocking. Awesome. 18/19 years old and built like a tank.

Of course but to suggest a redshirt freshman get even more carries than he got when we have other quality backs is ludicrous. You don’t want to wear him down before we get into the meat of the conference schedule. Despite their youth, the O-line played well and will only get better. Wilson is also a quality receiver. Figgins played well at TE. The LB’s moved from sideline to sideline. Johnson was a headhunter at safety. The undersized DE’s ran past OK State’s tackles. Our DT’s were strong.

Running up the score serves no purpose unless your opponent is any team coached by Steve Spurrier. Richt has always conducted himself in a respectable manner in these type situations. Theres no point in embarrasing a team once you know you have them defeated. Excellent call by Richt in calling off the dawgs. The Pokes brought what they had, it wasn’t enough and that much was clear. No sense in pounding them with more meaningless scores.

Tony, after following our RB situation, watching that game, seeing those results, you can twist that into a forum on how blind and stupid coach Richt is, well, ….never mind. You are in for a long joyless season, I fear. So your big beef is that Moreno who got 20 carries in his college debut did NOT get 25??? Incidentally, a 3.5 ypc, and a long run of 9 yrds isnt quite enough yet to move those 2 seniors back to the scout team. Maybe we hang on to them anyway. He is a star in the making without a doubt, I’d love to (an no doubt will) see more, but could we let the professionals figure out how to manage him in his first season of college football? I do beleive all those coaches have said all along that he was the type of game-changing backs we are looking for. How is it you are so disqusted that they (or Mark Richt only, I guess)can’t clearly see after all this time, what you do the very first time you even layed eyes on the boy? They have been telling you that every week for a year now.
I assume you do realize that Coach Ball handles the substitution for RB.

With the exception of the two fans seated next to us spraying the f-word every time UGA let anything go wrong, and their apparant coaching knowledge about why CMR should get rid of CWM after every defensive play (shows how much they knew, UGA held them to like 1 rushing yard in the third) we had the most fun Saturday ever. Great Victory! Most Seasons I have an idea of how the season may go. This season I didn’t really have an opinion because the dawgs were going to have a lot of young guys playing. After watching this game, all I can say is that it is going to be a great season barring injuries.
Observations: These young guys are good and going to be great with time. Moreno will win a Heisman before he leaves GA. Matt Stafford will not have to carry this team. If he uses his arm as he did last night and utilizes the talent around him, the sky (National Championship) is the limit.
CMR, when we are up by 21 late in the game, please pull Stafford. Don’t risk injury.

CONCERNS FOR SATURDAY
OSU did not test us in two ways we will be tested against South Carolina. OSU rarely lined up in the I and ran straight at us (which would have negated a lot of our speed), and they’re passing game had very few vertical attacks (which USC will do every other play). Carolina will come at us in a whole other fashion than what we saw yesterday. Many more questions will be answered next weekend. Still, I think we will by 11.

Mark Richt is doing EXACTLY what needs to be done with a guy like Moreno. Ya think if he carried the ball 25 times a game this year and averaged 130 a game-which he absolutely would-that he’d be back for another year in the Red and Black? Only if it was the Falcons Red and Black. This offense doesn’t NEED to let Moreno “show off,” and Mark Richt knows it. With Brown and Lumpkin to share the load, what’s the point in giving Moreno the ball 25 times a game?

I’d say 5 yards per carry was pretty good, huh? And unlike Brown or Lumpkin, he didn’t have any 2 or 3 yard carries until those 8 straight 4th quarter carries. He moved the pile for 4 to 6 yards each time.
Brown and Lump have never been that good, and I’m sorry, but in his few carries, Lump was slow hitting the hole and I saw Brown get taken down by the first guy too much. Moreno gets to the hole fast and busts through the first guy. He’s the real deal.
Be fair.

nascarfan, you are the one that needs to be fair, uga used all the backs well, except lump.now i know why.too bad,i hope he is back soon.moreno got plenty of carrys, and did well.brown had a great game, scored two tds remember?thomas brown is a good,EXPERENCED, back and he proved to everyone, except you, that he deserved to start.cmr knows what he is doing and all your pregame crying about brown starting and a two qb system was proven to be meaningless.moreno fumbled twice in the last scrimage, so theres no way he would start, coach had to get his attention.he is a great rb and will start someday but he must earn it.

bobo did a good job with the play calling, lots of screens and slants to keep the pressure off stafford, and a good ball control offense to keep osu’s o off the field.osu never caught on to the little slant over the middle, that was open all night.as a matter of fact i thought their middle was very soft.we won’t be that lucky with s carolina.however,i think our o line and young d proved themselves, bobo will open it up more as the guys continue to learn.

Carolina’s in deep poopoo this weekend. I’m not usually this bold, but this will not be a squeaker like many previous years. Dawgs win 38-17 (only because Bobo plays dead in the last quarter so as to not “run up” the score.” I know it’s SEC play, but the Cocks looked like crap against the LA Lafayette, and the Dawgs in Athens ain’t no Ragin’ Cajuns. Bring on the Evil Genius.

Fellow Dawgs,
It was a good win but it is now time to start focusing in on South Carolina. They looked pretty good on their first two drives and jumped out 14-0. They seemed to go flat and Coach Spurrier went conservative on Offense and Dedense and this let ULL back in the game. That won’t happen with us this week so our guys need to get ready for an all out war. Hopefully our Dawgs will continue to improve and play consistent/error free football. Go Dawgs

frankdawg,
Great win!! I saw a few things that concerned me. Their first TD was way too easy and the 3rd & 21ytg for 1st should never have been. Me and my Dad we have never seen the prevent defense work. UGA should through that “D” play back to where it came from and never use it again!!!
p.s. I hate to say it, but the c**’s wr McKnight is better than that guy from OKST. More shifty and has better hands.

Sorry, about getting SC “wr” Kinney Mckinley’s name wrong. He’s the one I was talking about.

Mark Bradley is right. See, Notre Dame tried to open up their season against a cupcake and it backfired on them, just like Michigan.

There was no need to get fancy and get a few more TDs in the 4th. More underclassmen got some reps and Richt didn’t show any more than he needed to SC.

Just ask Mike Shula if he’s glad he kept T. Prothro in the game late after the Tide had the gators beat. Game’s in hand, get your stars out of there.
