No Blank check coming from Vick

Jeff Schultz

THE TUESDAY COUNTDOWN

10: I understand completely the Falcons wanting to recoup $22 million in bonuses from Michael Vick. But they probably have a better chance of selling Vick jerseys for full retail than getting all of that back.

9: Going after the money is the right thing for the Falcons, primarily because it can create salary cap space. It’s right for the league because it sends a message to players who jump the rails in their personal life and mistakenly believe it won’t hurt them financially. Who knows, the Falcons might even be able to navigate the long and complex process of winning a judgment. But …

8: They only regain the cap space if they actually collect the money from Vick, not merely win a judgment. Those are two different animals. Just ask the Goldmans (and, no, I’m not comparing Vick to O.J. Simpson, so take your finger off the e-mail button). Vick isn’t about to say, “You’re right. Here’s my ATM card.”

7: We know Vick has made a lot of money but we don’t know how many assets he actually has, to what extent they’re shielded and how much money is actually buried in a hole between two palm trees on a remote island in Fiji. So good luck, Mr. Blank. This won’t be as easy as, “Cap space, aisle six.”

6: Even as a media member, I agree there should be certain rules of etiquette for press conferences. For example, there was the reporter who Monday dipped into the wrong bag of clichés when he asked Arthur Blank if he planned to “keep his players on a shorter leash.” Ugh.

5: Gotta admit. I’m so worn out by the perceived racial fallout of the Vick case that I actually liked seeing a picture in ajc.com of three white guys in Vick jerseys holding up a sign that read, “I will redeem myself.”

4: And now for something completely different: I’ve been collecting a few items from local sports teams for a benefit auction. The Braves last week were nice enough to send me two autographed balls. One by John Smoltz, the other by Bob Wickman. I do believe one has just become a chew toy.

3: It would be nice if at least one of the Falcons’ Virginia Tech products (Vick, DeAngelo Hall, Jimmy Williams) didn’t turn into a punch line. But Hall isn’t helping. Last night he had “I Own U 85” — a reference to Cincinnati receiver Chad Johnson — shaved into his hair. Johnson burned him for five catches for 83 yards and a touchdown in less than three quarters. Clearly, Johnson owned Hall — and I’m not talking about his scalp.

2: Yes, that was Hank Aaron, relaxed in a room full of reporters Monday at Blank’s foundation office, calmly answering all questions — fully realizing not even one would include the words “steroids” or “Bonds.”

1: Four days until college football Saturday. Oh, how I long for the relatively amusing crimes of the SEC.

Everything is about race…didn’t you know that?? It’s never an individual’s fault, it is because people are “picking” on him/her.

MeAngelo is the most over-rated player in the NFL. What Johnson did to him last night was hilarious.

Bad enough that his coverage abilities pale in comparison to his oral output, but you will NEVER see this guy lower his head and make a tackle.

Every time he meets a back or receiver, he claws at their shoulders or swipes at their ankles. And when a couple of our linebackers and/or safeties are bringing a guy down, MeAngelo runs right up to the action and STOPS.

Watch him closely, especially if you have TIVO, and mark my words.

Deangelo Hall is the most overrated player in the NFL. He is a modern day Ray Buchanan. Get burned five times, then make one decent play and celebrate like you’ve won a championship. I hope he winds up fulfilling his supposed potential, but I’m not optimistic.

The Falcons will not get a dime from Vick’s sorry a*. #7 is going where he belongs - jail. D.Hall looked even more foolish than he did last year when T.O. b*** slapped him and spit on him. Hope Hall is the next one cut.

mr. hultz, i also doubt that the falcon will be able to collect that full amount of signing bonus(btw, is that a prorated amount, or are they going after every penny advanced?). but in my opinion, they shouldn’t collect a dime. i’m sure they’ve made more than 22 million in jersey sales alone. when you add that to the increased exposure that they’ve received from worldwide coverage of mv7(that has helped to increase the value of their franchise), they should be offering to help pay his legal fees. i alway’s heard that any publicity is good publicity. i also think that some of the ajc sportswriters are a pathetic escuse for writers(t. moore, f bisher, d shultz[ i wonder how far you have to bend over and how much lube you need to keep a job like this, when you seem to have no clue] also people like buck belue and others in his line of b.s.}. now that the meat has been taken out of this sandwich, i wonder what you guys will replace it with? i have a suggestion: dig a little more deeply into the death of dan snyder.let’s hear more about how the nba ref’s are afraid the sky is about to fall in on them. let’s talk about the jockey who was suspended for abusing his horse. talk about all the dogs that are slaughtered in the dog racing industry. let’s do a real story about the motivation of stalking and killing animals in the name of sport. there are shows dedicate to this violence against animals, all over the cable networks on saturday mornings. i will be waiting to see the kind of stories you guys write in the future.

Once again Deangelo Hall is attempting to lip service his lack of coverage skills. When will he learn that the monetary gift he somehow was able to negotiate when he verbally sold his position skills will never be seen again. He is clearly overrated and the most underperforming corner in the league. Please dont waste your money on a gift horse Falcons!!!

Guys,

Leave MeAngelo alone! Can’t you see he suffers from the Napoleonic Syndrome? I mean, he’s only 5’9”, gets beat badly by all these tall guys and barks like a Chihuahua that he’s a big dog.

I kind of feel sorry for this short little guy who suffers from inadequacy problems and tries to disguise this as confidence.

Seriously, we just got rid of one obnoxious, overrated and underperforming Ape from Virginia Tech who is so stupid and immature he wears earrings lager than his brain—one more to go!

Let’s get some real men with such genuine confidence and cerebral sufficiency that they don’t rely on earrings to make them feel pretty and sexy!

Summertim- you are right. We do live in a world influenced by race. What usually happens is black person gets in trouble for breaking the law, black person plays race card, NAACP comes running, story becomes about picking on the black man (regardless of evidence), whitey backs off fearing more bad publicity, story fizzles, black person continues to break laws, never really getting more than a slap on the wrist no matter of multiple offenses, forever knowing that the race card is the easiest way to get out of any trouble.

IF racecard doesn’t work some other great excuses to get out of accepting responsibility are “they grew up in a rough neihborhood” or “he didn’t have a father” “he was running with the wrong crowd,he’s really a good person” That last one is my favorite. Isn’t that how most people get in trouble, by running with the wrong crowd?

DHall has been overrated ever since he came into the league. Its one thing to talk smack and then back it up. The guy is pathetic. The Falcons have really poured lots of money into these Virginia Tech products for all the real results we get. Not a huge fan of Chad, but last night was funny. Hell, DHall probably would have trouble covering the Falcons non-descript wide outs.

It was interesting that A. Blank could get Hank Aaron to come to a meeting with 24 hours notice and Barry Bonds can’t get Hank to come within a thousand miles of him. ESPN’s coverage was terrible. The Falcons were driving down the field and scored on a great athletic move by Norwood and they were interviewing Chris Mortenson. They weren’t even paying attention. Then it was an oh by the way the Falcons scored. It was that way throughout the game. I finally got so sick of listenining to Tony Kornblower bash everything from Harrington, Vick, Blank, and the Bengals I put the sound on mute for the 4th quarter. It was actually enjoyable. As a fan of football I’m more interested in the product on the field not sportscasters trying to make a name for themselves. They could have covered everything during halftime. If the MNF crew doesn’t get it more people will go for the mute botton on their remote. Gee I can’t wait for the MNF game December 10th with the Falcons. It’s the same day as MV’s sentence hearing. I expect 20 percent coverage of the game and 80 percent coverage of MV. ESPN has become the Jerry Springer of sports coverage.

As a long term Falcons fan, I have tolerated DHall and his mouth hoping he eventually might reach his potential. HOWEVER, I read a few weeks ago that he planned to put pressure on the Falcons for a HUGE contract (he even referenced the Sanfransisco player who signed a luducris $80 million dollar contract)…….give me a freak’n break!!

He needs to zip his mouth, develop his skills, listen to coaches, play hard for his existing contract and generally just grow up. His ego and the perception of his performance on the football field is WAY out of whack; he really needs a reality check.

If he pursues a new contract for a ridiculus amount of money, the Falcons should let him go or trade him. He is over rated in his own mind and by the NFL pundits.

Go Falcons!

Schultz,

You are an awful columinist. I am still trying to figure out how you decided MV is a coward. I think of two Atlant area players who are cowards, (Chris Benoit and Danny Heatley) It was nice seeing you getting handled on ESPN

If you dont think this about race go compare the coverage of Chris Benoit and Danny Heatley to the coverage of Michael Vick. Then you tell me who had the worse crime and who got the worse treatment in the press. If you look yourself in the mirror and say race isnt a factor, then either your mirror is broken and you are clueless

True, Johnson got the best of Hall but keep 2 things in mind:

1) Johnson is one of the best WR’s in the game, he’s made many good DB’s look bad.

2) It’s only a pre season game, I don’t know if Hall gave 100% given it’s pre season.

However, don’t forget the Falcon’s still won the game GO FALCONS!!!

This Vick fiasco is pathetic. People all over the world must think that Americans and their criminal justice system are crazy. It is legal to shoot an innocent quail or a deer, taxidermy it and mount it on the wall and it is all within the confines of the law. However, you get publicly and criminally persecuted, lose your career and fortune for fighting a vicious animals/dogs that will attack, maim and kill a human being on impulse. Go figure? We have one in 150 children being diagnosed with autism every day. This is an example of something that should be a national emergency. However, sadly, we spend our resources and time on prosecuting a individual for fighting an animal that is slaugtered and served as meal or a delicacy in several other countries/communities, including some communities right here in the good ol USA. This entire situation reminds me of spectacles in ancient Rome where people celebrated watching the demise of others.

Don’t-knowitall,

You’re absolutely right! I refer to black men as “apes” who look and act like MeAngelo Hall, Michael Vick, Chad Johnson, etc., whose behavior and appearance is “apish” to me. That’s just how stupid, ignorant and smelly men are who have to wear earrings, tattoos and gold teeth to get attention and think “I’s be look’n preddy fo da ho’s.”

Likewise, I have equal disdain for fat, redneck, beer gut, tobacco chewing “bubba’s” that like to defend the confederate flag as some sort of trophy. I refer to these guys as “inbred hogs!”

Believe it or not, when it comes to stupidly, ignorance, illiteracy, thugs, and all other degenerate human life forms I treat the “Hogs” and the “Apes” with the same disdain.

When it comes to character, decency, honor, faith and men of great leadership I see no color! I’ll have dinner with Tony Dungy and Peyton Manning anytime! These are real men! I’ll let you hang with Apes and Hogs!

At least I’m consistent and up front about it!

I agree with Eric. I also prefer dogs to most people. The dogs are more loyal and trustworthy. They do not care what you look like or how much money you have. They just give unconditional love.

Compare that to the trash in this world who masquerade as people. That is why so many Atlantans have turned on Mike Vick. It has nothing to do with his race. They just know their dog will not lie to them or try and cover up the truth or be an arrogant self rightous sob. Mike Vick did all of those things.

Bill Clinton, 1 President during a an economy that was not real because corp’s were cooking the books and noboody “SEC & JUSTICE DEPT” was watching. 2 Disgraced the presidency with his disgusting behavior in the OVAL OFFICE. 3 Was impeached.

I wonder which President will look better in the history books?

@jake bogartis: I think it’s widely agreed that the world would’ve been better off for all mankind if you and your grandaddy would’ve picked your own cotton. spare us the obvious.

@larry: although I agree with your views on Dhall, I think that last post of yours trumps him in the area of espousing total bullshxt with no factual basis. watch it before you become what you hate. I guess you believe consistency and forthrightness are always virtues. I implore you to realize that it’s possible to be a consistent Prejudiced A***** (to which race I don’t care) and to be honest about that fact. that won’t make you less of a P.A., just more obnoxious and sad that you’ve accepted it and boast about it without seeing the obvious contradictions. to be honest, you seem more like a CLASSIST fxcktard to me.

@mike vick: you are an idiot. you forgot the golden rule of any public figure in the world. Cover Your A*. though i believe the punishment to be overly harsh due to the state of acceptance to all forms of violence that currently pervades our society, I also believe that when you have as much as you have and blow it as hard as you did, you have no right to whine. hope to see you lighting up the Jumbotron again soon.

and for all those non-racists concerned, I wear diamond earrings given to me by an italian banker friend of mine and I like my clothes loose. but if you saw me on the street (ahem…larry) you’d never even give me the credit of being an international businessman, you’d just see some “ape” and quite possibly remark that I probably financed my earrings at the expense of my rent. I get these reactions everytime I go out in america. oddly enough though, it never happens abroad whether I’m in England or Bangladesh. there are some places that still see people as people. I implore you all to try it sometime.

I see where someone had the nerve to post that black people get away with crimes. And then they foolishly continued prattling on about how blacks are allowed to keep committing crimes. I wonder what world he or she’s living in because it’s definitely not this one. When a black person is charged with a crime, the majority of the time they are going to prison. You must be referring to white people. I can think of quite a few white people who walked.

The reason that I dont care that Vick is gone is the Falcons record with him at quarterback. You people that are so harshly against anyone who dosent like him should realize he is a loser. Here is the Falcons record with The coach and dog killer at the QB position. 2001- 7 9 0 2002- 9 6 1 2003 -5 11 0 2004- 11 5 0 2005- 8 8 0 2006- 7 9 0

Total 47-48-1 As has been said before an average Qb and a below average person. Why defend him? Is it just because he is black? I just dont get it.

Great comments! This Vick adventure did not come about due to racial divides. He was adored by everyone! Vick has problems because of his arrogance and belief he is above the law. His blood-lust started in 2001 - and he was not indited until 2007. This is about anything BUT race! It is about Vick’s actions and questionable past misdeeds finally catching up to him. It is about a man with no empathy, integrity, or honesty. He did this entirely to himself! He has placed himself in the exact position he kept those defenseless animals for numerous years - in a cage whose fate will be determined by a third party! Fortunately for him, the judge is not a killer!

I just don’t understand how so many people are willing to judge a man, good or bad because he killed some dogs. I don’t think its a cool thing to do, but I’m not gonna call somebody a good or bad person cause they did something I wouldn’t do.

The more I hear discussion on this situation, the less I think its about race. It’s not even about Michael Vick so much. I think its more about agendas. In Vick’s situation, there are people who are gonna benefit, the media, prosecutors, even animal rights activists, because they get to further their cause.

It seems that almost everyone who comments on the situation also has an agenda. The racists agenda, those who want to say that this has nothing to do with race, the athlete haters, and so on. I read comments to these articles and its very rare that someone even mentions a reasonable conclusion to this situation without an agenda attached.

For people that want to condemn a man over some dogs that would never have any affect on their day to day lives. Before you all go crazy over family pets that attack more human beings than trained fighting dogs I suggest you read below!!!

**A scan of the biblical references to dogs gave an outlandishly depressing picture of greedy, filthy, deplorable beasts, best known for licking up enemy blood from the streets and revisiting their old vomit. They are compared to every sort of person held to be disgraceful, from male prostitutes (Deut. 23:18) to villainous enemies (Psalms 22:16) to false Christians (Philipp. 3:2). True, Christ uses some semi-friendly canine imagery in his repartee with a determined Canaanite mother in Matthew 15:26ff: reflecting that his mission at the moment is only to “the lost sheep of the House of Israel,” he responds to her request to heal her daughter by saying, “it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house dogs.” Playing along with the allusion, the canny mother says, “Ah yes sir, but even house dogs can eat the scraps that fall from their master’s table.” Jesus is impressed: “Woman, you have great faith,” he says. He heals her daughter. The dog-lover can well imagine that he probably also fed a few real scraps to some very happy real dogs in his time. But a conservative skeptic would call this wishful thinking, self- serving delusion.

For the final blow against the good dog, from what ought to be the fundamentalist point of view, is delivered in Revelations 22:15. “These others must stay outside (the holy city of God): dogs, sorcerors, fornicators, murderers, and idolaters, and everyone else of false speech and false life.**

Let Vick Play!!!

I am not a Vick fan, I am White, so called, I raise Golden Retrievers for show and pets, however;I think the treatment of Mike Vick is approaching Lynching.

How many Federal Crimes of Dog fighting are pursued? This is selective prosecution, pure and simple. Mike was guilty of being stupid, but this whole mess shouldn’t have never gotten to this point. If Michael Vick had friends with enough common sense for him to come clean early own this could have been dealt with, and everyone could/would have been better off.

Mike has lost a minimum of $150 million dollars, think about that! He paid more Income Tax than most of us here on this blog make.

I don’t think what Mike Vick did was right, it was horrible, but wife beaters and child molestors aren’t treated this horribly.

A poster used some scriptural reference earlier, I would suggest the example of the woman at the well where JESUS Was supposed to condemn her for adultry. Instead JESUS wrote Sins in the Dirt, then suggested that the person without sin cast the first stone. I’d love to see that apply to the Journalist, easpecially those at the AJC.

The sooner that Vick realizes that “they” will never allow him to play in the NFL again the better off he will be. He should NOT go on these different TV and radio shows to “apologize”, once is more than enough. He should tell Goodall and the NFL to f* off, tell Bank to join them, then tell the press to go and find another whipping boy because he has retired from the NLF and is going home to enjoy the fruits of his NFL labour and will NOT be speaking to them EVER again. At that point he can live happily ever after.

Vick is a disgrace to the Atlanta Falcons, the city of Atlanta and the “black America” from which he claims that his support is coming. Arthur Blank signed this young black man to a $130 million contract when many experts questioned whether he would ever prove himself worthy of that kind of money. Unfortunately, Vick let Mr. Blank down by never honing his talent on the field to the level that we would expect of a franchise QB (too many interceptions, fumbles, and incomplete passes). Moreover, Vick also let down Mr. Blank with his lack of character: being accused of spreading venereal diseases, showing evidence of illegal drug possession and use, shooting a bird at fans, and now his pleading guilty to these very serious and disturbing federal charges. And the state of Virginia has not had their say yet! Does this sound like someone worthy of being the “face” of your professional franchise? I don’t think so. I’m already more impressed with what Joey Harrington has shown us both on and off the field. Good riddance to Vick. The Falcons will get as much of that $22 million as they can from him (good luck) and then cut his behind from their team. He might play for an NFL team again one day. However, you can bet your last dollar it won’t be for the Falcons. The immense disappointment and embarrassment that he has caused here will never be forgotten.

Typical ghetto mentality, never take responsibility, and pointing fingers at everyone but yourself. What part of he did himself in with his immature and irresponsible actions do you not understand?

It’s not Blanks, Goodells, McKay’s, or George W. Bush’s fault. He only has his “I’m the baddest a$$ gangsta around” attitude to blame for his downfall.

Oh and by the way, his apology was so rehearsed and false that it was laughable to any discerning, logical thinking human being.

Hey AJC I am a black educated man and I say enough. The hate spewing from both sides is ridiculous. This is football. Not poverty or education or health care. The hate that is in some of these posts concern me to the degree that people on both sides feel this way. It is a game. Not a job, not a government.Maybe if we spent our money on improving our country instead of making people millionaires that play a game, we would all be better off. I am just amazed that a meaningless game generates so much hate. And to all, if you feel this way, don’t hide with ridiculous and stupid names. Most folks out there that are spewing out hatred towards Vick are jealous because they didnt sign a $130 million contract, and they werent making over $5 million a year in endorsements, and they didnt have a $50 million contract with NIKE. Most of those people are jealous racists who simply cannot stand to see a rich black man exist in America. Vick was a very dumb black man, in fact he may be the dumbest person (whether white or black) to ever live. But the fact that he is black is the same reason why so many Falcon fans were clammoring for Matt Schaub when Matt was here. Those uncle tom fans did not want to see a black guy at the top qb position no matter how much potential that person had. Like I mentioned on so many of my BLOGS in the past, hatred and racism in America is why there are so many negative BLOGS posted here today although Vick has already given you an honest apology and he simply wants to be left alone. Vick will gladly do his jail time, redeem himself and come back and play football agin in the NFL. He may never again play for the Falcons but he will play for someone (possibly the silver and black since they are known for bringing in the dregs of society.)

You disguised it well at first with your very accurate opinion about Vick, his behavior, and his just punishment. Then, quite predictably, you just couldn’t resist the old “you white guys can’t stand to see a black man succeed” babble. You are a very stupid, ignorant man, regardless of your race!

In the mortal words of Daffy Duck, you are DESPICABLE!!!! May the bird of paradise fly up your collective noses. LOL

GE, you will find no hate in my heart, I have merely spoken the truth. I find your rant to be somewhat comical and completely delusional but then again, unlike you, I have outgrown Daffy Duck and other sophomoric cartoons. Quick question, how does one spread impotence? What are you trying to say? GE, your reality check has bounced, have you had your meds today?

Class = Hank Aaron, Dusty Baker, Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby, Magic Johnson, Bill Russell, Kenny Smith, Doc Rivers, etc.

Not that idiot trash mentioned in my other “rant.” It AIN’T color … Those guys are human filth, period. If you can’t see that make an appt. with an optometrist. Forget the race card. I for one am SICK of you playing it.

Why cant the negro leaders stand up and denounce the criminal and savage like behavior of these negro athletes? It is a shame and disgrace. Why must Roger Goddell do it? Negroes, police your own!

I heard Vick might get to play in the Mark Cuban league UFL. Thats one way they could get some ratings if they start up in 2009. I wonder if they are getting an Atlanta team.

Jeff, Vick will play again one day. If the Falcons won a judgment they could garnish payments owed under future contracts.

If he plays as a QB he’ll continue to play poorly … SELAH.

I’m not sure I understand all of the hostility toward DeAngelo Hall lately. I’ve been an avid watcher of the Falcons for years and Hall has been mostly fantastic at CB since he came into the league. He is certainly better than 95% of all CB’s out there and flat out makes plays all the time. He’s shut up Chad Johnson in several REAL games, not to mention T.O. and others. He may not be the best there is but I’m glad we have him because he gives us a legitimate pick threat in the secondary and can usually be counted on to be left on an island in coverage. I think some people get a little too worked up over meaningless preseason games like Monday…..

So many great things to anticipate about SEC football. But, you close your column with a negative comment. Why?

I must admit. D.Hall does suck. He talks to much.

What you say about judgments is true in the vast majority of cases, but I don’t think it applies here. Hopefully vick is never seen in an NFL uniform again, but if they do let him back in the league at some point, what do you think the chances of that happening are if he has an outstanding judgment against with the Falcons?

Hopefully Vick gets the full 5 yrs.and then is banned from the N.F.L.Maybe let him come back and park cars or take tickets, something like that. Just don’t let him handle any money!! DON’T DROP THE SOAP MIKEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
