Walsh was a true wizard
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
THE TUESDAY COUNTDOWN
10: Some coaches today think they’re innovators. They have no idea. Bill Walsh was so far ahead of the curve in every way, and I’m not talking about just the “West Coast” offense.
9: Walsh was the first to realize you didn’t have to beat up guys in practice. Drills were focused more on details than banging. He knew better than most when to cut a player (to the surprise of everyone, including the player) and when to bring one in, even if at the tail end of a career (Jack Reynolds). He spent more time than most on the start of the game (scripting the first 15 plays) and the end (two-minute offense). He excelled at knowing how to motivate players in ways other than yelling. And it follows, he excelled at mind games. Finally, many African-American coaches in the game today, including Marvin Lewis and Ty Willingham, can thank Walsh for starting a minority-coaching program in the 1980s.
8: On a personal note: I worked in the Bay Area and covered the 49ers. I can tell you that it often was an aggravating endeavor because Walsh made it so. (He also was ahead of the curve in mind games with the media.) But it was sort of a fun aggravation.
7: I once asked Walsh about signing Tom Cousineau for his strike-replacement team. Walsh said, “That’s not true.” I said, “Bill, his jersey is already hanging in a locker.” Walsh said, “We changed our mind.” Of course, the next day Cousineau was on the practice field. I once asked Walsh before a Super Bowl about his impending retirement. He said, “I haven’t decided yet.” I said, “Bill, I’ve got two sources who say you told them you’ve made the decision.” He said, “They were mistaken.” Of course, they weren’t, and he retired.
6: At the time, I considered Walsh a pain. Now I can say it was a privilege to cover him, to know him and to be misdirected by him.
5: So when was the last time we could say, “The Braves have the best lineup I in the National League”? And when is Free Lithium Night at Shea Stadium?
4: According to the “Summary of Facts” for Tony Taylor’s dog-fighting guilty plea, “At one point, the defendants obtained shirts and headbands representing and promoting their affiliation with ‘Bad Newz Kennels.’” The big problem with that is the shirts and headbands did not carry the Nike logo. Thus Vick lost his endorsement deal. I think.
3: Nice hard-hitting interview by V-103. Wonder if Michael Vick left the money on the nightstand when it was over.
2: Richard Lapchick released his “Racial and Gender Report Card” for the WNBA Tuesday. The report concluded that the league needs more men players.
1: Matt Schaub, more myth than reality right now, may or may not come back to haunt the Falcons. But it won’t be this season. One online sportsbook lists Houston as 100-1 to win the Super Bowl. The Falcons, with Joey Harrington, are 40-1.

I wonder why black athletes in serious trouble always bring up “leaving it in God,s hands”. Mike Tyson did it and now Vick is doing it. I take it God went along with whatever they were doing and now they want a get out of trouble free card.

Vick’s days as a quarterback for the Falcons are over. His days as an NFL player may be over too. ‘T’ signed a document stating that Vick almost exclusively funded the entire operation.
As I predicted two years ago, Michael Vick will never take the Falcons to the SuperBowl.

To Marilyn James,
It’s obvious that you have never gone through trials in your life. Probably never did ANYTHING wrong either, right? Who are you to question anyone’s walk with God? You aren’t an authority on who has the right to place their trust in God! If you’re honest, I’m sure you’ve done some things you are ashamed of. I’m sure you’ve slept w/ a man or two out of wedlock. Am I to assume that you aren’t a believer because you made a mistake? And then the morning after, did you have the audacity to proclaim that God would look beyond your transgression and deliver you to higher heights? Did you also pray for him to deliver you a GOOD man who wanted more from you than just your body? You’re the type of hypocritical Christian that irks me to no end!!! This wasn’t supposed to be a religious debate anyway….My point is, just like Mike Vick should be presumed innocent, likewise you don’t know him well enough to question his spiritual foundation. Just shut up and let the process play out. Live your life the best you can, and don’t judge his sincerity regarding his faith.

Hmmm Lets See…Have any of you, Mr. Shultz and your media buddies included, ever considered for one second that Michael Vick could possibly be innocent? I guess it is completely unheard of for a guilty person to implicate an innocent person just to save their own tail? Espeically since the Federal Government is so known to take no comment for an answer. I wonder what ever happened to the faith in the justice system. I guess it has been proven so many times to be unfair and unfit that we don’t even bother waiting to see what the proof is in cases any more. I pray for Michael Vick I also pray for you Marilyn James that God continues to keep you in good times and bad comments.

Jeff Schultz you are a JOKE!! Are you jealous that Mike Vick doesn’t think enough of your talent as a writer to grant you an interview? You and the rest of the AJC sports staff are a disgrace. I’m sure if there was another paper in town to challenge your lack of credibility you would put forth a better product. You currently can’t be held accountable for your slanted viewpoint so readers of Atlanta continue to get an inferior product. Maybe if Mike Vick had more faith in your fairness, YOU could have gotten him to talk to you…..Maybe one day

America has gone absolutely crazy. Mike Vick would have been better off killing a Human being than to be involved with dog fighting. Since when did dogs become more valuable than human beings. Hundreds of dogs are put to sleep everyday How many of you dog lovers have gone to your local shelter and adopted one. Think about it. P.S all dogs don’t go to heaven.

From strictly a football angle, it is a very sickening feeling that we lost Matt Schaub. He is the perfect match to carry this team and execute the West Coast offense. What a match that would have been with Petrino and Schaub. Something that could have been so easy turned out to be the biggest snafu one could ever imagine. As far as Michael Vick, he still just doesn’t understand what is going on around him. We all know he is a great athlete, can run fast, etc., and we understand there are folks that love him and always will. That is normal, human nature. But at some point both he and all of the supporters that are in denial, must understand this is strictly about the law. Remember Jim Baker. He was and is a wonderful person and did a lot of really good things for people. I believe he is a Christian but made some mistakes and should be forgiven just like all of us need to be forgiven. But the moment Jim Baker commited fraud and it crossed the FCC and ICC state lines via the mail, it became a federal offense and that is what brought Baker down. It is simple as all that; it is about breaking the law. My hope is that Michael truly does pray and ask God what he should do; believe me, God will show him what to do if he is totally truthful.

I saw one those fights before, it was on an underground tape. You know they go three rounds and sometimes end in death unfortunately. The fight I saw was called an epic battle as in the first round one combatant lost a couple of teeth and they were going at. In the last round they both came out bloody and the crowd was cheering for more pain and blood until one got the other down and was putting it on the one on the bottom. At that point they stopped the fight short of death because the one on the bottom had nothing left. Man - those MMA/UFC fights are crazy right? Point is, “AS A VIEWER”, if you enjoy this then you can’t be upset about two dogs doing the same. YOU ENJOY BLOOD SPORTS! Also, what about Robert C. Byrd, The ex-Klans man talking about Barbaric, Barbaric, Barbaric. He also stated he wouln’t mind seeing an execution. I bet he has already seen a couple in his day. Mybe he was thinking about his glory days.

Bring up the issue of Vick’s dog fighting now and every Negro wants to talk about horse racing, ultimate fighting, boxing, deer hunting or anything that they hope will somehow offer mitigation for vick. There is none! dogfighting is, in and of itself, a felony offense. None of the other activities they bring up are. Vick was an awful quarterback and, apparently, he didn’t fare very well as a dogfighter either. The people who bringing up these other issues do so to confuse, confound and to obfuscate the only issue there is that pertains to this case. Was vick the moneybagged moron who paid for all the faciloities, animals, etc. in the dogfighting operation? The answer is Yes, he was. so, stop with the transparent and ill-conceived efforts to lessen his blame by talking about the brutality in other sports and activities. Vick was a murderous dog killer and he’s going to prison. word to yo mammy!

First of all, I’m not down with MV7 forever. I recognize this as what would have been the make-or-break year for Vick. And I love the Falcons. I want wins.
It is true, Schaub has won absolutely nothing so far. I wish him well, though.
Comparing this to the OJ case isn’t the half of it. OJ got off… Vick’s trial isn’t in California, hasn’t happened yet, and he’s already lost a hundred million. And people are still not satisfied - they’re calling blacks extreme because they in general want to stop the lynch mob and let the courts handle it. Amazing how people in the majority can lose perspective.
I assume, despite the David Duke comments, we will get very few people acknowleding that comment… instead they will villify the people like me, who mark that comment as blatantly racist.
Finally, of course Vick doesn’t want hardball questions. save those for when he’s out of the woods. This is nothing to play with.

It intrigues me the length that Vick fans will go to in disparaging anyone who thinks his alleged crime did in fact occur. I have read people talk about racism, people talk about innocent until proven guilty, and talk about Michael Vick’s walk with Christ. You even blame PETA, as if they killed the dogs. I pray that Michael Vick does walk with Christ. Ask yourself people, do you in your heart feel he was involved with dog fighting.Seriously, can you anser that. You can say innocent until guilty, but if you ask yourself what you believe, I think you’ll be surprised. I try not to judge, yet I do because I am human. It is wrong, but the facts to date contribute to my feeling that he is guilty. I believe that Vick is guilty. This is not a color issue. Stop blaming color every time a person of color is in trouble.

Hello everyone, you know I have read some good and bad things said, inspite of it all, we all have faults and don’t think one wrong is lesser than another in God’s eye. Now, the sad part about this mess is, everyone is hating the other one which is what the devil really wants, the media wants their sales so does the TV. The animal rights groups are asking to give Vick’s monies to them, why? Nothing you say can justify that. I’ll sai it now and I’ll continue to say it, whatever should happen in this issue, Grace superseds the law and Vick will still stand when it is all over. As for myself, I pray all of our sons and daughters, simply because no one is exempt from getting caught up into things and we all be honest, add your name to the list for prayer. If you have a son or daughter and they should drown a cat or driving drunk/high by chance they hit and kill someone, would you not want to have someone to have compassion on your child’s behalf? Well, I would and I am sure Vicks mother is hurting with all of this and yes, I care I am a mother. I do believe if this was a white QB, the media, etc. would not be as broad. I say it, because it has happen and that’s the sad part. The devil is feeding off of this and morer each person open their mind and hearts with hate, hell is enlarging herself. Atlanta Falcons isn’t a one man’s team, but now, Vick is in this mess, he’s not a good QB, come on guys the same way it’s not a one man’s team, one man can’t lose the game and because you don’t care for someone my plea to all of you, stop enjoying the hate. Vick will want the best the Falcons and they should know it, cause many of them he have helped outside of football. May God have mercy on all of us and grace shine upon Vick and his family.

This town did accept Vick, so stop the needless talk. THIS TOWN DID ACCEPT VICK! He let the town down, PERIOD! Why must you bring down Joey Harrington? Is it because he is white> What are your issues with white quarterbacks. Again- This town DID accept VICK. What do you think created waiting lists for tickets? Why do you think for a few years, Atlanta was actually considered an NFL city? For the anti-PETA people, what is your cause in life? At least these people have something they feel will help others, even if they are animals. For those who want to blame others, look at the indicted himself. He is the one who flipped you all off. He could care less about this town.

IF Michael Vick goes to jail, it will almost certainly be because he is guilty. Not because of racism.
But the joy, the elation, the piling on? Some openly admit they are happy Vick is indicted, without expressing any opinion on the crim he’s accused of. No, people are attacking him as a symbol, and it ain’t for dogfighting.

Jeff, you disappoint me. Common sense leads you to know what was going to go down on the Vick phone call. I support his presumed innocence until proven guilty, but you must be in the head if you thought his lawyer or Vick himself was going to talk to anyone looking to be the next Mike Wallace. It was about PR, and going to a “friendly” audience to let his voice be heard. Give him credit: What sense would it make for any defendant to allow an interview from a reporter (local or national) who you KNOW is going to press hard about the case?

Unfortunately for many people it takes a big event in their life to make them strengthen their relationship with god. ObviouslyMike Vick is hurting and in times like these the Lord is the only place to turn. Not even a mothers love can truly make a person see the light. Everything in life is done for a reason unfortunately it may take this event to make Vick truly focus his life on football. I wouldn’t be surprised if he got married in the next year. He has never been well received by many in Atlanta and maybe this will help him move on to a city where he is truly appreciated by all and not just mainly black people and some whites. My son and I were ticket holders till I moved. It is sad to see that when there is controversy about players it always comes down to race.People should not judge before Vick has his time in court.Hopefully he can prove that he had no part in the awful business of dog fighting. If he can then his career might be saved to a point.I don’t think he will be the same hero to young people as he was and that is a shame.Kids NEED someone that they can really look up too.

Nothing rings more hollow than Jailhouse religion. Where was God when he was betting on Dog fights? Was he praying to God that his opponents Dog died? Did he leave the carnage in God’s hands?
Add hipocrisy to all of the other reasons not to like Vick.
Personally, I don’t care for the guy because he sucks as a quarterback. Can’t read a defense, can’t throw an accurate pass consistently, can’t make a decent check off at the line, carries the ball like a loaf of bread, etc. etc. etc. He runs like a deer, but you want your quarterback to make good decisions and distribute the ball. He can’t do it. When he meets a defense that can match his speed, he can’t figure out how to win - he doesn’t have the skills to beat anyone he can’t outrun.
Quite frankly, he has been given a pass on all of his bad behavior and bad play because he is black. A white quarterback with his numbers wouldn’t have been put on a 7 year development plan, paid $130 Million and given all of the 2nd chances that he’s had. (See Jeff George)
He’s not only a coach killer, he’s a franchise killer who now has the Falcon’s entire organization on life support.
As for all of this ‘innocent until proven guilty’talk, I agree. The reason that Michael Vick the person isn’t in jail right now is that he’s innocent until proven guilty. However, Michael Vick the brand doesn’t get the luxury of a presumption of innocence. Michael Vick the brand answers only to a public image. If Nike and the Falcons want to fire him because his image sux, then they have a right and an obligation to do so.

I do so love it when white folks tell us to look at the facts. There is not a single fact in evidence that MV7 participated in dogfighting. There are ample facts about him buying a piece of property (nothing illegal about that), buying a few dogs (nothing illegal about that), lending financial support to a legitimate dog breeding and selling enterprise (nothing illegal about that). Everything else that you think you know abut this case is based on the uncorroborated testimony of convicted and/or admitted criminals. And we here in Atlanta just know that law enforcement would never ask an informant to lie, say maybe to cover up an illegal drug raid that ended up with an elderly Black woman dead in her home. That never happens right?
And what’s the problem with Black folks comparing dogfighting to any other activity that involves brutality towards people or animals? The prevailing sentiment in this paper and this town since this issue was first raised is how this type of activity demonstrates that MV7 is a low-life, thug, despicable person. So it seems perfectly reasonable that we as Black people question the motivations of people who vilify Vick for his actions, but don’t have a similar problem with similar cirsumstances. Yes Dogfighting is illegal most places. But just because something is illegal doesn’t mean it’s morally wrong. Certain sex acts between consenting adults are illegal in GA, but I bet many of you commit these crime on a regular basis. So the comparison is completely valid, not to the extent of approving of illegal dogfighting, but certainly to show that there is a gross double standard being applied in this case.
And finally, for all you white people who insist on telling us Black people what is and is not a “color issue” you really need to let us be the judge of that one. You white people have proven over long history that you just don’t have the best interests of Black people at heart. According to white people, Blacks lowly position in this society is either a simple “fact” of biological superiority of whites, or alternatively it is somehow ordained by God. The good Senator and former KKK member can surely attest to these widely held, and completely dishonest arguments. We Black folks seem to take all this in stride, but we aren’t that forgetful. It wasn’t that long ago that the white majority of this town had a perfectly good place for all people of color, and it was not a nice place for us at all. So you do not have any standing, morally, intellectually or otherwise to pretend to now tell us what is or isn’t a racial issue.
Now, feel free to hate on me as much as you like, because I already know none of you haters has the cojones or brain cells to confront me on any logical or rational level.

Matt may indeed be a perfect fit for the west coast offense. However, Petrino is installing more of a spread offense and combining it with a power running game. Correct Mike. Schaub would do ok in an offense built around him. He did no worse than our $100 Million man when he was put in the game.
He isn’t the guy for the spread offense though.
People seem to forget that Vick hasn’t had a winning season in a while, despite everyone in the organization building everything around him.
Guess it must be the coach’s fault or the receiver’s fault, or the offensive line’s fault, or Rich McKay’s fault, or the media’s fault, or the legal system’s fault, or the people he hangs around with or Blank’s fault.

Dirty,
No one cares if you like white people or if you do not. Your main interest in talking about other topics is to confuse the issue. You know that and I, most assuredly, know what your tactics are and why you resort to them. Mike Vick is guilty as charged. There are numerous eye witnesses who will testify against him. There will be more witnesses and more charges. Dog fighting is illegal and it’s immoral. Your arguing that it is not inherently evil and morally reprehensible is typical black thinking. Negroes will twist anything around to suit their own interests if they can. That it makes no sense does not carry any weight with you at all. Vick will be suspended from the NFL for a very long time after he’s released from prison. He is going to prison Dirty! He violated the laws of the land and he’s going to pay for it. I bet that concept has been impressed upon you in your personal life, hasn’t it Dirty?

Many thanks to July Jones for swiftly proving my point about haters. Not a drop of rational or logical thought process in that stinging rebuttal.
Only in America can a Black man be found not guilty and still freely called a murderer. Only in America can a Black man be found not guilty and still be called a child molester. I suppose there is no reason for some white people to believe the courts work if a Black man can walk out of one without a conviction on his head.
Not like the good old days, eh July? Back then you would just string those uppity Negroes up on the nearest tree.
And FYI, Oprah, Spike, and whichever Black Mike you were referring to definitely deserve reparations from this country, along with the rest of those of us who are descendents of Blacks held in chattel slavery and persecuted by Jim Crow. And it has absolutely nothing to do with what they have been able to accomplish as individuals. Reparations are payments to redress PAST injustices, so holding up a present day success story as some proof that reparations are not due is completely off the subject and intellectually dishonest to boot.
About what I expected from your ilk.

Congratulations and many thanks to David Duke, another hater who went out of his way to prove my point.
While I eagerly await the opportunity to trade stimulating commentary with most people, most of the faux Mr. Duke’s diatribe is so purely nonsense as to defy all attempts at rational rebuttal. I am sorry you got the impression that I don’t like white people. Not quite sure where you got that idea.
However you are correct about the attempt to confuse you. I intentionally used the English language and complete sentences to throw your ignorant a* off track. See how my plan is working!

Dirty, you don’t have a plan. A plan is a detailed proposal, or course of action, to be followed in accomplishing something. Your garbage does not constitute a plan. Mike Vick is guilty and he’ll be punished. Reparations? Welfare and Affirmative Action give aways, long ago, repaid any debt owed the sons and daughters sold into slavery by their own people. It is the black population that owes legitimate reparations to the rest of the American citizenry. It is the American taxpayer, predomionantly caucasian, who pays for the lodging of those who have committed crimes and the jails are full of African Americans. From dealing dope to armed robbery to petty theft the bulk of crimes in most urban areas are perpetrated by blacks. Chattel slavery, where blacks were viewed as property of an owner, has been extinct for well over one hundred years and still the Negro can not rise to the level of true independent individuals in this nation. You want something given to you. You say you want to be treated with equality within the law but cases such as with Vick indicate you want to be above the law. As for Orenthal James, he was acquitted by a group of ghetto roaches. He, however, was found liable in a civil action and he will always be known as a murderer. Michael Jackson was found Not Guilty but you want to tell us he’s not a child molester? He is a child molester who had lots of money and managed to get off. I wouldn’t want a child to sleep in his bed, not even yours.
As for your efforts to confuse, the only person who seems to be buying it is you!
