DEL.ICIO.USPetrino deals with perhaps the worst offseason ever

In the six months since signing on for “the best job in football,” Bobby Petrino has seen a starting defensive end leave in free agency, four other regulars lost to injuries (one jet-skiing), another sue the team, one get arrested for felony animal abuse — not that guy, the other guy — and the franchise centerpiece turn into a human train wreck, with spectacular crashes from Miami to Capitol Hill and all shadowy barns in between.
On a lesser note, Jimmy Williams is facing misdemeanor marijuana charges. Relatively speaking, this is comic relief and ensures Williams at least will get on a stat sheet this season.
Today, the Falcons open training camp.
So. Everybody feeling all rested up?
Why does it feel like 3-9 in December and going to New England?
If nothing else, the backdrop to today’s practice in Flowery Branch has cast Petrino in an unfamiliar role — that of sympathetic figure. His career has shown him to be a talented, creative and successful coach — on wheels. His resume defines, “Hello, I must be going.” His secret job interviews define deception. But it’s difficult not to feel a little sorry for him.
Two days before training camp, Petrino was forced to attend a news conference 46 miles from the Falcons’ practice facility. He sat with his two bosses, Arthur Blank and Rich McKay, fielding questions on the artist formerly known as Michael Vick. He wore a suit and tie and a look that told you he would be ripping them off the second he got out the door. But he tried to play the role.
Reminded of his best job in football remarks in January, Petrino said, “I said that. I do believe that. I absolutely have no regrets about taking this job. I’m very motivated. This is a big obstacle, there’s no question about that. And only time will tell if what I said really happens, but I do believe this is the best job.”
We are reminded of the Watergate figure, G. Gordon Liddy, who, legend has it, held his hand over a flame until his skin burned. When asked what the trick was, Giddy responded, “The trick is not minding.”
After learning Wednesday that Warrick Dunn underwent surgery for a herniated disc, we can assume Petrino’s entire head is in the flame. If this isn’t the worst offseason in NFL history, it’s at least a cruel joke.
Petrino will mandate tunnel vision — even as the tunnel appears to be crumbling. The Falcons’ success depends on not merely his resiliency but how effectively he commands that from his players.
We know he can design an offense. Now we’ll find out how effectively he can grab the attention of NFL players. Even in the Falcons’ long and mostly inglorious history, we’ve never witnessed a distraction such as this, and one that might linger for months. Even if the Falcons move to put Vick and the dogfighting circus behind them as quickly as possible and release him, it wouldn’t eliminate the lingering odor. The Falcons will have to play through it.
Blank learned about the Vick indictment when a pilot woke him up on the return trip from Africa and handed him a fax. “There are times,” he said, “I wish I was back in Kenya, dealing with the lions and the cheetahs instead of this.”
But they’ll all have to deal with it, even if Vick is in another state. Most pro athletes can compartmentalize well, but this will be a test. It’s different from anything Blank went through at Home Depot, different from even what McKay experienced early with Tampa Bay.
Petrino? Just losing as a head coach would be a new experience. In four seasons at Louisville, he went 41-9, won the Orange Bowl and scored 40-plus points in more than half the games.
Just guessing, but the Falcons don’t have that look right now. They are small on the offensive line, thin on the defensive front and short on positions that make you feel comfortable.
Blank reminded the masses Tuesday that, “It’s not about one player. It’s never been about one player. It’s about a football team. It’s about an organization.”
In an ideal world, he is correct. But when times were good, Vick was so much more than one player. And now he’s so much more than one little obstacle.

Not withstanding is the actions of sport-players. Their actions in/out of the public eye must be at its best. Football Teams cannot have just one star or one best player..they must have good backups. We have heard from the NFL, Mr. Blank, Coach,etc. What we haven’t heard from the actual truth about these charges. Its hard as an organization trying to uphold an image that does not reflect its personal or all personnel in general. If so, that is not the way an organization build itself. One player must not cause the entire organization to crash, in fact, the organization must make itself better by overlooking the facts that they can do better with less. One man cannot forever keep a team or organization moving, rather, it takes all of the defense and ofense. Would you agree?

Petrino, will be gray headed by the end of this season. Unfortunately, I have to say this will be a tough season. New coach, new system, players going through all kinds of adversity. It all equals a losing season. I’m hoping for 7-9. But logically 5-11 is acheivable.

Let’s see… “worst off-season in history” plus the historically bad reputation of the Falcons in dealing with adversity. I look at the schedule and see 2 wins. Any more than that is hoping, not thinking. I’m really glad I’m not a Falcons fan.

Well we all know I should have bought the team instead of Arthur. Arthur was my motivator not the Brains.
As for the team. You never know this could bring a team together so we will see what happens. Remember our schedule is one of the easiest of the league.
My prediction though is if we do bad as you all predict, Petrino will resign and I will feature him as a star attaction at my aquarium.

Perhaps Petrino can make lemonade out of lemons…this season is already a washout, so he can probably keep his job next year even if he goes 3-12 this year. Vick is a thug and a lousy passer…this is an opportunity to flush Sick Vick out of the system and have a decent pocket passer that can take some punishment and keep the QB seat warm ‘till we get a more talented guy (like the one we just traded away.)
Why heck, the only way the season could get worse is if the whole team dies in a plane crash (oops, did I say that out loud?)

Whatever happend to innocent until proven guilty? Why is no one giving Vick the benefit of any doubt? Will not his attorneys be able to cast doubt? Bud Any pocket passer on this team is going to get killed. Can you say multiple concussions? Picking up Harrington was a good move. Harrington was supposed to be the experienced back-up for Vick. You know, the player that only plays if Vick is injured or indicted on Federal charges…whoops! Believe it not, white people rooted for Vick, too. At least, I did. But doggonit, with Vick, it’s just one thing after another. Even if he isn’t found guilty of every charge brought against him, one must admit that Vick’s constant run-ins with trouble are more than just coincidental. Face it, Vick has problems. Problems that he can’t or won’t take control of. And that is hurting the team and dividing its fan base.
We all need some reilef.
That said. I hope he did not do those things. But if he did, he’s got to take responsibilty for his actions. Perhaps if he had tried taking responsibility for his actions earlier on, Vick, Blank, the Falcons and the fans could have avoided this whole mess.

Mr. Blank is a business man, thus, making the dollars and keying in on the foundations that is indeed costly. The questions becomes how can this be happening. Well, football teams and its players goes in thinking they will win. Its foundation is built on winning rather than losing. When the team reaches it final games and think they are good; along comes a spider…and start spinning a web of cluster things that might look good to him, but it cut right down to the core of the entire organization. Trapping it until all of the negative things come out about it. Millions are lost, where all would think that its not. Recovery from such a low point put a lot of doubts in the minds of everyone. The baggie pants sends negative messages just as the images that a person has. The Atlanta Falcon Football Team’s images cast doubts on where it will go for this season and perhaps for the next two years. Images promote and give pride to a organization in the public eye. Behind the doors, it should not matter unless we see it happening.

Is this the worst off-season? Hell-lllll yeah! This Vick situation, the way it has divided an already divided town, the sick dog allegations, and the embarrassment that has cast a volcanic plume size cloud over this town that will not go away for several hundred monsoons. I swear ATL is cursed when it comes to sports. How can this town come together and support these teams when some of THE dumbest s* known to man keeps happening to them? There should be a Sports Hall of Shame in America. We would be the first,second, and third ever inductees. First, what other NBA team have you ever heard of that has EIGHT freaking owners? What are they, the financial version of the Wu-Tang Clan? Top it off, who ever heard of owners of the same team suing each other? Atlanta is supposed to cheer for that? Get behind that? How many baseball teams have you seen choke consistently as you have the Braves in the 90’s? Choked against the Twins, Toronto, Phillies, Padres, Cubs, Astros, and worst of all- them dam Yankees (twice and I’m still sick about ‘96). Up 2-0 straight killing the Yanks in N.Y. only to come home and get swept. UGH-HHH! Yeah we would win it the year (‘95) after the strike when no one gave a hoot. Figures. That’s real exciting there, woo-hoo! Then we have our Falcons, everything from Eugene “the Sex Machine” Robinson to setting a galactic record for most hits and cuncussions suffered by one QB (Chris “Chandelier”) in one season. A record btw that was previously held by another Falcon QB Chris Miller. Remember him? He got knocked around so much the NFL started actually keeping stats on concussions for crying out loud. There’s Jamal Anderson blowing out a knee with no one even touching him, you have Deion coming back to haunt us and whooping Andre Rison azz in our own Dome and claim it as his, you got that lugnut Jeff George, the run and “crap” shoot, the Dallas Cowgirl debacle of the early 80’s, Dale Murphy wasting all those years losing with the Braves of the 80’s (what a waste!), and the Dominique trade for Danny “Rotten Knees” Manning. No wonder this town has the worst fans! I cheer for ‘em all anyway, but man I can’t blame anyone for not cheering. The things that have happened here as far as sports have set a record for sorry. By a freaking mile! This is not the only longest off-season ever, but the worst collection of ridiculously ran franchises ever in one city. People who ask why the fans here suck need to schedule a CAT scan if they can’t figure it out. Dam.

The Vick apologists tend to forget, chronically so, that the people selling out the GA Dome were predominantly white folk. But oh yes, they HATE a black QB right? Right? When it comes to a young man taking responsibility for the things he may have done all of a sudden we are haters if we point out the obvious: Vick has put himself in situations that intrinsically hurt the ATLANTA FALCONS by association. Even if he is ultimately cleared of everything, he has obviously associated with people who live to break the law in one way or another. The fans will not support a franchise that supports a player or employee that is allowed to associate with people that do those things.

I think that there are some more totton apples on the Falcons’ roster that need to be booted out the door too. Winning begins with attitude and “thugs” are cowards, not winners.
If the Falcons clean house and rebuild from the ground up with the right personnel with the right attitude, the will be more successful in the long run.

I’m a little surprised no one has mad the connection with Vick’s association with illegal gamblers in the alleged dog fighting ring. After the NBA ref scandal, he should be suspended until he is completely exonerated. I always wondered about that fumble in the fourth quarter against the Browns last season. What was the over/under?

Schaub will now be forever YET ANOTHER one that got away in Atlanta’s sports’ history. Sigh….I’m now not so much looking forward to the football season. That’s unusual for me, by the way.

It’s the worst off-season for me having to have Mike Vick’s ALLEGED indiscretions and HERETOFORE UNFOUNDED allegations shoved down my throat by the AJC every day. Enough already.
Vick’s gone and if the Falcons are supposedly as good as Vick haters said they would be w/o Vick, we’ll surely find out.
My prediction: Blank will have to pay US to go to a Falcon’s game pretty soon. Right now, team now worth the price of a hot dog and large coke.

Let’s be real and acknowledge that this is a blessing in disguise. Vick is gone, most likely, forever. If he is guilty and is suspended or banned by the NFL, is his contract voided and does the salary cap burden disappear? If so, the Falcons have been released from an ill-advised long-term contract that no one would take.
Vick does not have the skill-set to be a consistent winner in the NFL- compare him to Manning and Brady, the 2 winningest QBs in the league. Vick’s removal will take the pressure off of Petrino, and allow him the time to install a winning system and build a winning TEAM. The best TEAM wins in the NFL, not the best individual talent.

Vent king, very good post. I have to disagree a little when it comes to the braves because they did win the world championship. I feel your pain in 96 and 91 though and yes they did leave us fans with a feeling of being ungratified. They certainly should have and could have won more championships. But at the end of the day when you look at them versus many other baseball franchises they become ligitimate because of that one world championship. There are still baseball teams that haven’t ever won a world championship. Some who haven’t in 40 or 50 years and in the case of the cubs 100 years. So when you look at the braves in that context they become more legitimate.

I am sick and tired of this story all ready. I have not heard one word of apology from Mr. Vick towards the fans, the actual investors of the team, we the season ticket holders. He has apologized to his broz on the team, nothing for the fans. My tickets have gone from $330 to close to $1,000, for a product that now has Joey Harrington and Jarius Norwood for a backfield. I find it hard to believe that Mr. Blank did not know who Vick was hanging with or what kind of a character he was dealing with, money talks with Arthur, and Vick was his meal ticket, jerseys, do rags, $160 shoes. Real good move to put all your eggs, over $100 million into a sicko’s basket. My question is “Where is my Rebate for my over priced season ticket?” What a train wreck of a organization the Falcons have become, criminals rule the roost and the biggest is the owner.

After making the mistake of going to FALCONS Training Camp today and seeing first-hand the rudeness, obscenity, vulgarity, rage, stupidity, racism, blind rage, COMPLETE lack of consideration for other fans and the almost-constant heckling of Joey Harrington just for the color of his skin by the most of the VICK SUPPORTERS, I am beginning to wonder if the KKK, an organization I have always hated, despised and even pitied, may have at least some validity to parts of their platform.
The VICK SUPPORTERS with whom I shared oxygen today are NO DIFFERENT THAN the KKK. What hypocrites!
