For Blank, a day tinged with sorrow

Mark Bradley

Whatever anger Arthur Blank felt had been left behind closed doors. On display Tuesday was only sorrow. A proud and powerful man sat before the assembled media having been brought low by a quarterback who’d signed a contract worth $130 million but who allegedly still felt the need to bet $1,500 on a dog fight.

Arthur Blank bought the Falcons because he loves Atlanta and he loves sports and he loves the notion of sports serving to enhance the community. He came to work Tuesday — “work” in this case being his office at the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, his outlet for doing big-ticket good deeds — and was met by three animal-rights protesters. Think about that.

Think about an owner who has tried to be a friend and mentor to his players, an owner who now stands betrayed by the player he sought most to befriend and tutor. Think about this man of immense wealth feeling the need to apologize, four years after the fact, for the not-exactly-criminal act of pushing a broken-legged athlete around a football field in a wheelchair.

“A naive decision,” Blank called that 2003 photo op, and if there was an overarching message to Tuesday’s pained and protracted press briefing, that was it. Blank had put his trust, not to mention that $130 million, in Michael Vick, and now this mighty captain of industry had been made to feel like a seagoing naif.

“There was no reason to believe what came out in the indictment would be in the indictment,” Blank said. There was no reason, he said, because he “did not think it was my responsibility to ask Michael if he’s guilty or not guilty.” And then, asked about the Michael Vick cited 50-plus times in the indictment: “That’s not the Michael Vick I know. That’s not the person or the player I’ve known these last six years.”

If blissful ignorance isn’t the most desirable commodity in the business world, neither is it a federal crime. Maybe the Falcons should have grasped that Vick wasn’t as nice a guy as they’d hoped he’d be, but could anyone have guessed that not-so-nice would translate into the world’s most infamous dogfighting defendant? Said Blank, believably: “We had no indication, no signs, no whispers of this type of behavior … I didn’t know he owned any dogs.”

Almost pitifully, he felt moved to add: “Pet dogs.”

A rich man buys a football team because he thinks it’ll be fun, and six years later he finds himself being labeled an enabler of criminal conduct. Think about that. Think about a guy who saw the profit potential in ceiling fans now having every business decision of these six years thrown open to question. Of the choice to lavish that $130 million contract on Vick two days before Christmas 2004, Blank said: “I felt this talented young athlete needed to be a Falcon for life.”

Two years, seven months and two days later, there’s every indication that talented young athlete has played his last snap as a Falcon. Blank wanted to suspend Vick for four games, the maximum allowable under the collectable bargaining agreement, before the NFL moved Monday night to bar him from training camp. Should the league lift its moratorium, there’s a good chance the Falcons could swallow the salary-cap poison pill and cut him.

Think about that. Think about Arthur Blank, who prides himself on his business savvy, being confronted with the realization that he couldn’t have been more wrong about the most famous employee he has ever had. Think about the deflation and disillusionment the rich man must be experiencing today.

“Try to explain [the concept of dogfighting] to a little fellow who’s 10-years- old,” said Blank, speaking of his son, and there were long moments Tuesday when the billionaire looked and sounded 10 himself. He kept blinking and biting his lip. He appeared as if he wanted to cry. He’d given Michael Vick every chance, and Michael Vick has made this proud and powerful man seem like just another wide-eyed dupe.

Before you mental midgets jump all over Blank for never asking about Vick’s guilt or innocence, let me explain something to you:

BLANK CANNOT ASK VICK IF HE IS GUILTY OR INNOCENT AND VICK CANNOT ANSWER THAT QUESTION!!!

And this is why:

Anything Vick says to someone else regarding the case, and that means that person must be brought in for questioning and will be subpeoned to testify in court. Now do you morons actually think Blank wants to testify at this trial?

Also, Vick’s lawyer would have been telling him from the get go to not privately divulge his guilt or innocense, as only speech between a lawyer and a client is protected.

Also, Blank’s lawyer and Rich McKay (a lawyer) would tell Blank not to ask the question for the reason I first gave.

By not asking that question, Blank does not have any knowledge, and therefore, cannot be called to testify for the defense or the prosecution.

So before the complete and utter idiots come out of the woodwork, how about you learn a little about the law, just a little bit, before you crucify Blank?

Before you talk about credibility let me tell you: Blank would have no credibility with ME and every other half-way intelligent, non-Gump out there if he actually injected himself into these proceeding by asking a question like that. The only people who have no credibility are the ones who don’t seem to understand the situation Blank would be putting himself in if he asked that question.

Here’s a $10 bet that says Shock is the QB by October.

well, this what happens when you have so much money,so much fame and so much power guys simply think they’re above the law.i hope this is a huge wake up to the young african american community.you can never can get so high that society can’t bring you back down.maybe this is a lesson to arthur blank himself.to run a business like a business ,not like a family of sorts,it came back to bite him, which is so unfortunate for an owner that cares so much for his town, his team his superstar.god bless the falcons organization.

I am disturbed by dog fighting it is a violent and inhumane practice, but unlike so many others if i was the falcons ownership i would avoid making any judgements on your star quarterbacks name until he was proven guilty. The words the ownership has used to talk about Vick is hurtful and if i was Vick knowing i was innocent, there is no way in the world i would return to play for Atlanta. I would demand a trade. It would be a no discussion no communication. simply trade point BLANK and period.

I don’t disagree suspending him from training cam, but and if he was proving inocent i would sue the league for not allowing to properly prepare for the season and hurting his performance and missing out on bonuses.

Furthermore what type of organization gets more participation to protest animal abuse, but has no other type of group that goes after murderers, child molesters, i didn’t see PETA at the R-Kelly mystery trials, and i definetely didn’t see them helping out the unjustly punished like the Genarlow Wilson case. had they been there he probably wouldn’t be in prison. thanks Peta

I’m sure that this was very painful for Blank, and I’m not unsympathetic. But, the signs have been there for years, if only someone had the gumption to look: Ron Mexico, The Finger, the airport Rolex, the Miami airport, and so on. For me, this keeps coming back to Jeff Schultz’s point- HE KNEW. Whether he participated or not…he knew. And, do you want someone who (at best) turned a blind eye to such brutality on your team? Not me. Ah, well, it was a business decison to enable, and to look the other way. And now, it’s a business decsion to be “SHOCKED!! SHOCKED!!! over things that had been right under their nose all along. No winners here- nobody, and I mean nobody, gets the moral high ground.

FIRST mistake blank did was firing dan reaves. reaves was actually trying to mold vick completely into the type of leader the falcons needed both on and off the field. (the speech classes, counseling vick, firing his quarterbacks coach for not teaching the fundamentals of a pocket quarterback at the pro level). reaves even told blank that firing him would set vick back (remember when they interviewed dan reaves on the radio after the mora firing earlier this year?). who know reaves meant both as a athlete and a person? anyway, being a vick fan, he did let arthur down. man this is so messed up. blank traded shaub to eliminate controversy, fired mora (good move anyway),gave him all that money. and like bradley said, vick is down with his boys gambling chump change when he should be at home studying game film. i blame the folks who used vick (as well as other athletes) at the high school and college level. they dont care for the most part about developing athletes into being responsible. i know some do but most dont. its embarrassing and like blank said to the reporters who kept asking him at the interview today ” how in the world did ANY of us know what was gonna come out in that indictment? the virginia people DID give the impression that vick wouldnt be involved and that things would be cool. anyway, vick shouldnt have put himself in that situation in the first place.

I attended Falcon’s games when I lived in Atlanta, but I will no longer do so. I am tired of the so called fans. I do not like you, one and all. Just like the Green Eggs and Ham. I will not support the Falcons here or there and I will not support them anywhere. Not until Mike Vick is brought back fair and square and PETA is not petitioning at all out there.

This is really bad. Having a legion of PETArds on hand makes it worse. As disgraceful as animal cruelty is, these people are almost more disgusting than those who they lobby against. I feel for Blank, and as a Falcon fan I feel really, really let down. We had a chance to be something special, and Vick has taken a %^$# all over it. DJ Shockley is this franchise’s only hope to unite the fans and make this team worth watching in Vick’s absence; I hope they realize that sooner rather than later. Joey Harrington and a big cap hit against the supporting cast could make us about as competitive as a WNBA team would be against the Suns.

You pretty well captured Mr. Blank’s depression and sadness Mark. Mr. Blank knows, in his heart, that Vick is a fraud and he’s guilty of all the unspeakable acts detailed in the indictment. He’s sickened by all this and he now knows it’s time to remove this piece of garbage from his team. When he became disenchanted with Reeves he fired him. When he’d had enough of Mora he showed him the door. He’s more than ready to rid himself of a second rate quarterback who is nothing more than a third rate criminal and an insufferable blight upon his franchise!

Everybody knows that Blank couldn’t handle Coach Reeves and for that he cast our bright shining star to a coach that allowed just about anything. I don’t blame coach Mora, because if guilty Mr. Vick is a grown man, I just hate what the team became. An open door to rebuttle.

This is just pitifull. I say, I know the family, at least a member of the family. I live near Michael Vick’s growing up area. I live here, and it makes me sick. I know this area, and I am not supprised with what his friends and he are able to do. There are many messed up people who walk around with their pit bulls. I didn’t really think about the fihgting, I mean I thought that some were fighting dogs, yet I didn’t give it much thought as to just how everything would go down at one of those fights. I sorry to say, I know Vick is involved in it to some extent. That’s all I want to say, I sorry that people still would do that to a poor dog. I have a dog and love him. My Boston Terrier (Abner).

It really was a sad day and I am disappointed in the media. Everyone has already condemned Mike Vick. I get the feeling that he is gone. When the Falcons traded Matt Schaub, they made their bed with Vick. If Vick was involved, ok, lets deal with it, punish him, let him serve his suspension, but please Mr. Blank dont cut him. The details of Vick’s case do appear to be horrific and disgusting. I dont think he was personally involved, but I think he had knowledge of some events that happen and that makes him guilty by some degree. If he is found to be guilty, he should be punish, but lets be realistic. Vick has money and no doubt the best lawyer money can buy. Vick might have to sacrifice this year, give some information about the dogfighting business. Then he is going to get suspended probably for the year. Ok, he takes it comes back next year…..so what do u do Falcons? do u trade him, cut him? I am sure at least a half dozen teams will be lining up to get him. Where will that leave the Falcons? probably back to being a perennial 5-11 team.

Blank knew something was up. This is a kin to Enron, where the CEO claimed he had no knowledge of what the CFO did. It was BS then and now and big business ended up paying for that CEO’s lies in the form of new laws.

I believe Arthur is a business man and for him it was good business to keep Vick around. He says the Falcons are about integrity. Too bad the main Falcon(CEO if you will) and star leader was caught and implicated with everything from drugs to the United States claiming the he staged animal fighting. Vine City might buy that, but Garreaux Dr. won’t. Then again they don’t watch ‘football’:)

Therefore it may be accurate Blank never asked Mike if he actually did anything. Why would he? Who cares what you did, it’s what they can prove.

is it me or did the timing of the nba scandal seem kinda coincidentally come out after they got everybody whipped up about vick. looks like they wanted to overshadow the nba thing which potentially has really more far reaching implications (potential of other referees and players being involved) that want they wanna admit. look at the timing of everything. NOONE outside of espn is talking about this mess. i havent seen a article yet by the ajc columnists about this potentially huge controversy.

Myconju, the difference is that Vick was the main dirtbag in a criminal enterprise. Babineaux killed a dog he’d given his girlfriend because they were having an argument and he wanted to impress her with his lack of humanity. The dog, named Kilo by Babineaux, was killed much as one of the Vick victims. He’ll be suspended by Goodell when he’s found guilty. I agree with you, Babineaux should not be with the team. He and Vick are both marginal human beings at best.

I read where Emmit Smith said that Vick had to learn that you cannot take the friends from home on your lifes journey. Mike was a commodity, a business, he failed to leave the “hood” behind and enter the real world of business. And this is where it got him.The biggest thing he is guilty of is being dumber than a rock. Those people around him are like a parasite, a leach or tick. They just suck the money instead of blood. His “crew”, his “boyz”.If he did not have the money and fame , they would not know his name.Ask MC Hammer.

To myconju- you’re absolutely right. College football coaches know the sexual nuances of the girlfriend of the 4th-string tight end. The only things that these people don’t know are the things that they’re content NOT to know. It’s all about “plausible deniability”. We’ve got 3 dogs at home; they’re part of our family. That PETA doesn’t protest Babineaux is the height of calculated cynicism. More mileage out of R Mexico.

Point is, Blank has to get rid of Vick this season until the trial is over. No one will know whether he is guilty or innocent until then. If Vick were smart, he would’ve taken the paid leave of absence. But since he cares more about himself than he does about the welfare of the team, he’s not going to do it. Blank has no other choice but to suspend him indefinitely.

The man invested $100+ million into a degenerate thug. Let’s move past him, and focus on members of the Atlanta Falcons that will be on the field this season, cause Vick will NOT be there.

As for you Vick fans (not Falcons fans, but Vick fans that only see him and not the team) all of your whining is for nothing. In one way or another, Michael Vick will not be under center this season. But like a true fan, I will cheer for the team regardless.

As long as we continue throw huge wads of cash at young men who continue to grow up without the benefit of a father / strong role model and not a street wise thug mentality of (I hate to use this) “dog eat dog” attitude. It is time that we sometimes look past the dollars signs and look to help them in the other facets of life like maturity and responsibilty. Authur Blank wants us, animal lovers to fell sorry for him? And, he did not know, Vick was conducting a dog fighting business?

I do not buy it. Since, this dog fighting events were going on since, 2002. And, if it were not for the local police filing drug possession charges against a relative of Vick’s, the Federal Government would not have been, involved.

And, Blank wants pity. No way. I will give pity for the seven graves of the dogs which is the same jersey number Vick wears. Maybe, the seven dead pit bulls did speak from the grave saying, they are the wittness.

Sorry Authur Blank, I am boycotting the Atlanta Falcons and any product endorsed by the NFL from balls to helmets.

And, if and when the Falcons play the Chicago Bears, my home team, I will go to the game, the Bears side and yell, Arf, Arf, Arf,Arf, Arf, Arf, Arf, Arf, seven times in honor of the dead pit bulls.

Vick is a monster and animal. And, in our society, animals are put in cages.

His GM wanted Lovie Smith. Mora wasted 3 of the best years of Vicks Carrer. I am through with ATL teams. The owner ship is terrible Blank owns the Falcons, AOL tried to destroy the Braves but they won any way and God help that mess that is the Hawks ownership, thay are all clueless except the man they won’t let run it. The only type of role model a football player should be to a young child is how to play the sport to the best of your ability. Parents need to start raising their children and stop using athletes as models of HIGHER moral human beings. Athletes, a lot of the time, are very young and ignorant to the world. If we look back at some of the things we did at 25 years old, would we be proud of it all? Honestly think on how you would act if you were 25 AND a MULTI-MILLIONARE? What Vick is accused of is sick and horrific, but at no time even before this or any other violations or crimes he’s accused of or was around, would I tell my child, be like Vick and EVERY way. And that goes for any other player, actor, rapper, singer, socialite, or Paris Hilton. Further I think the media and those who consume it are also to blame for the fact that we can’t use atheletes as role models anymore. We begged the media to tear down our heroes and then become upset when human atheletes do what humans do…make mistakes, use bad judgements, and sometimes break the law. Think about it people, when was your friend’s DUI placed on the front page of the AJC? When was the arguement you had at your job placed on ESPN? Make atheletes heroes for playing the sport better than anyone else rather than I wish he was my child’s father rather than the one he has.

A confused Falcon,

This team is not rebuilding. That is the only time a team starts with an unproven rookie. As much as Harrington sucks, he is still better than DJ because of his NFL starting experience. Personally, I’d rather they go after Culpepper or somebody else.

Blank will look a lot better to sports fans when he gets rid of Vick.

Frankly, I’m going to see who will drive Mike Vick’s WHITE FORD BRONCO. Who will win that ‘starting job?’

Will it be Arthur Blank? Marcus Vick? Joe Horn? Ray “Big Play” Buchanan?

Just imagine: Vick’s WHITE FORD BRONCO is leading a massive police pursuit circling I-285 with Vick hanging out the back with a loaded gun in his mouth threatening suicide for all the cops & cameras to see. Just as the BRONCO rolls over the Fulton County line, the vehicle suddenly hits a deep, infamous Fulton pothole. The gun discharges. BLAM!

Problem Solved.

Game Over.

The dogs Vick murdered are avenged.

thomas, who are you calling “fools?” You type and reason like the dumbest and least-civilized person, by far, on this blog.

We ALL know Mike Vick INVENTED Football all by himself. Right, thomas?

i think arthur blank is racist. he tried to suspend vick, but if vick was white, he wouldn’t have. plain and simple.

Things that nake you go hmmm;

**Why is that Atlanta, and America for that matter, was so quick to say the law enforcement officals in Miami were dishonest and deceitful when they announced that there was no illegal substance in the infamous water bottle.

Yet people are quick to call anonymous witnesses - who clearly have worked a deal with the Feds - credible, reliable sources.**

Does that sound strange to any of you?

Again, I must say…Wasn’t Pete Rose thrown out of baseball after he was caught gambling?? And he was a white guy…in fact I’m sure he still is (a white guy).

This is for those people who want to turn this into a racial thing. I’m a black person and if Michael Vick is guilty and it seems like he is, I hope he goes to prison and experiences some of the type of abuse those dogs went through. I hope the same for Babineaux.
