Falcons damned if they do, damned if they don’t keep Vick
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
If the Falcons let Michael Vick play, a lot of people will be really upset. If they don’t let him play, they’ll lose a lot of games, and that will upset folks, too.
If they let him play, he’ll be the talking point of every game. If they don’t, he’ll still be the talking point, as in, “Would the Falcons have won if Vick had been out there?”
If they let him play, they’ll give the impression they don’t care about right and wrong. If they don’t, they’ll give the impression they don’t care about wins and losses.
Since the NFL seems content to leave the issue in the lap of the judiciary system, the play-or-sit call is apparently the Falcons’ call to make. Arthur Blank and Rich McKay are smart men, but even Confucius and Solomon in solemn consultation would struggle to choose between these bad options.
Vick will appear in federal court the day the Falcons open training camp. It’s expected he’ll post bond. If he’s free to walk the streets, shouldn’t he also be free to earn a living? A paid leave of absence might unknot the earning tangle, but how would it play among other salaried employees?
Bobby Petrino came here to coach Vick. How would he feel if his best quarterback was eligible to play in the eyes of the law and the league but was held out for the sake of appearances? How would Alge Crumpler feel, or Joe Horn? Wouldn’t shelving Vick until the matter is resolved be tantamount to quitting on the team and its season? And how many fans who insist they’d rather see the Falcons go 1-15 with Joey Harrington will feel so righteous if the 1-15 actually transpires?
The moral high ground is easy to tread from afar. It’s only during the actual trek that things get muddy. The Falcons don’t want to appear crass — Blank has always seemed sincere in his desire that employees be good citizens — but they aren’t a college team. There’s no educational component to their mission. They exist to win games. Even if you regard Vick as more hype than substance, you must concede he gives his team a better chance to win than Harrington.
Back to the college thing. Facing a deluge of publicity and an ongoing investigation, a prestigious university shuttered an entire program and fired the coach. Today, Duke’s mishandling of its lacrosse team stands as an object lesson — how not to respond.
The wiser course, which isn’t to be confused with the popular one, is to let the courts sort it out. Kobe Bryant played while facing trial in Colorado, and his case was ultimately dismissed. The Falcons released Tony Martin, their deep threat in their Super Bowl season, after he was indicted on federal money-laundering charges. He was acquitted and wound up catching 67 passes for the Dolphins that fall. Two years later he returned to the Falcons for his final pro season.
There’s even a more recent local precedent: The Falcons haven’t released Jonathan Babineaux, who himself faces a felony charge of animal abuse, or placed him on paid leave. This was Blank in February: “There’s this thing called the legal process that’s even above the NFL and sports … [Cutting Babineaux] would be the worst possible thing we could do. It would be a slap in the face to the judicial system. Making the concession of throwing somebody on the fire would be the worst thing for our organization and the worst thing for Atlanta.”
If that was true then, it’s true still. And time and distance — and, let’s be honest, winning — have a way of calming even the most impassioned outrage. Yes, it was unseemly that Rafael Furcal played in the 2004 division series after having being sentenced, earlier that same day, to three weeks in jail for violating probation. Yet Turner Field patrons seemed not to mind when Furcal hit the home run that won the game.
If the Falcons let Michael Vick play, they’ll look bad. If they don’t, they’ll look even worse.

Good article Mark B. You bring up legitimate points. On some of the earlier blogs, I hear people calling for Vick’s head. Despite Vick’s transgressions, he remains one of the most exciting players in the NFL. To outright release him, especially without all the evidence being presented in a court would be insane. Blank is a smart man, and considering the Falcons made the stupid move of trading away our insurance policy, I dont see the Falcons as having much choice but to let Vick play out. As u mention, there is precedence with guys like Kobe Bryant playing while facing potential prison time. Vick will most likely face suspension from the NFL eventually. Let the commish do it. After all, football is business, and its BIG business and anyone who doesnt think so is fooling themselves.

Mike should step forward- As real leaders do- And say that I will not let this be a distraction to MY team and ask for a leave of absence and a high gear speedy trial. Let the team bond behind Joey or D.J.. Mike could coming running in afterwards like the calvary OR take his punishment like a man.

I totally disagree with your final sentence, Bradley.
They will look worse for letting him play, because then it’s the “win at all costs” sickening mentality.
I say Blank must… MUST sit Vick down and make him understand (but who really cares if Vick understands or not) that because of the media circus that is surrounding him and will surround the team if he plays, that Vick must sit. Paid leave of absence.
That’s the only way for Blank to go right now. Paid leave of absence.

Thats good reporting. Particularly the Babs quote. I had forgot about some of the other folks you bring up..
For today, thats Mark Bradley 2, Jeff Shultz 0. Read Ken Strickland and my comments in his blog to see why I say that. Jeff’s had a personal vendetta against Vick for some time, and he knowingly mistates his facts to make his point, which for him is to be the lead torch in the lynch mob running Vick out of town before the legal system even gets things under way.

When people out there say we cannot win without Vick is like a slap in the face to the new coach and the rest of the team. How soon we forget we went to the Super Bowl in 1998 with Chris Chandler. At best he was a little above average up that point. I’m promise you if you ask Coach Petrino can he win without Vick, without hesitation he would say hell yes! We need to look at this like an injury or simply the end of Vick’s career, the day will come when he is not our QB. Don’t leave the guy hanging in a tough situation, you suspend him with pay, and stand beside him until its over. He needs to focus on the rest of his life right now, not football.
We move on like we would if it was the end of his career.
If he’s found not guilty, I’ll be the first one in line to welcome him back.
I’ve seen some comments from people calling DJ an Uncle Tom when us white guys say we like him.
They won’t support DJ because he’s a nice guy. That clearly shows who the real racists are, PITIFUL when you support one of yur own!!!

2 things, Bobby petrino did not come here just to coach Vick and I think RIGHT & WRONG is a hell of alot more important right now than WINS & LOSSES. If its not, then its a sad world we live in.

The distinction among utility and justification is applied here. Put simply in our system, if Vick can sell he deserves to stay and play. And there is a real possibility many people will like him even more now. Especially in this town, of almost all towns.
If you’re damned either way, you might as well choose the path that least damns yourself.

I don’t necessarily think Vick gives us a better chance to win. I think he got by on his athletic ability at first, now defenses have him figured and what you see is what you get, a fast man that simply is not a very good qb.
Mark did you know Vick has not thrown a td pass in the 4th qtr over the last 18 games??
I bet you we win more with a real qb under Petrino than Vick.

All of your points were valid. No the fans won’t be happy if its a losing season. But Ookie should have thought of all this before he bought the house, the rape stands, and everything else needed to get the operation up and running. He’s got to go. He is an embarassment to your city. I thought our owners were nuts. Arthur Blank thinks he has to consider the “customers?” The man is turning the Falcons into a traveling circus. I just wish Ookie was coming to Soldier Field this year, where he usually stinks up the place. We would bark non-stop throughout the game, and I hope thats what happens wherever he goes.

I’ve spent most of my sports-conscious life waiting, hoping for the Falcons to get their act together. They almost did under Dan Reeves, but Michael Vick broke his leg - so we fired the coach. But this latest incident is the last for me. I don’t care about Michael Vick, I don’t care about the Falcons anymore, and frankly, I’m getting tired of the NFL. Not angry, not hateful, just realizing there are better things to care about. And spend money on.
Sorry Mr. Blank. Time’s up.

ok, here goes. lets take the dog fighting thing away for a minute. vick was hated WAAAAAY before the water bottle, before the herpes scandal, before the dog fighting. i live in atlanta and i know this about atlanta, its a melting pot city. most of the people there are not from atlanta, and they will let you know it. they move there because of the cost of living, jobs, beauty of the city and just because, damn, atlanta aint too bad a place to be. then they just hate on the local teams because their allegiance is to where they came from. ok, i will give them that, just a little. but what gets me is the local media in atlanta fits right in and they suppose to be neutral. vick is hated because of one thing and one thing only, he is a threat to whats comfortable in ignorant minds across america. vick was gonna bring the high school and college athletic quarterback to the nfl and people feared that because there would be no room for the non athletic, nepotism, nfl trained nepotism quarterbacks like eli manning, john elway, etc . thats NOT a knock on those quarterbacks, if you can play, you can play. but any defensive coordinator will tell you that if you get a double threat quarterback on offense, its a nightmare to defend, especially if that quarterback has talent around him at key positions. then, vick topped it off with the hip hop persona, the braids, the headbands, and people hated arthur blank for it. they hated arthur for sticking by this man but choose to ignore that other quarterbacks get pampered too. no one made a big fuss when john elway crapped on the WHOLE LEAGUE when he said he wasnt playing for the colts. no one said boo when eli manning crapped ON THE WHOLE LEAGUE, when he said he wasnt playing for the chargers. they let them come into the league, the ultimate TEAM SPORT, and show SELFISHNESS beyond dispute, and no one says boo. but vick puts a doo rag on and grows some hair and everybody say he isnt crap. hell, mora and knapp wasnt trying to coach vick, they thought they would outlast him and bring shaub in and blank saw that. blank aint stupid. now everybody hating on blank for not immediately suspending vick. atlanta is known for foolishness. man, even david justice got ran out of atlanta after winning the only championship IN ANY ATLANTA SPORT, and won some more rings and they interviewed him on espn and he busted the braves out about how they made a big deal out of anything he did but chipper jones running around MARRIED AND GOT OUTSIDE BABIES and you heard NOTHING of it until AFTER chipper was divorced. had that been justice or vick, it would been a oprha winfrey lifetime tv channel episode.

How many people are going to show up at the Dome wearing dog collars?
The majority of right-thinking, sane fans don’t want this pariah around the team. I supported the Falcons before Vick, and I will support them after he’s gone.
I’m not sure how much I can support them while he’s with the team, though.

A friend of mine pointed out something that I missed, since I wasn’t paying attention to the names on the indictment. Javon Bodie, Vick’s cousin, that was living at the house when the drug charges were first made, was not named in the indictment. He also said that he was all to blame. So, do you think he is Corroborating Witness #1, #2, or #3? (you have to read the indictment for the C.W.s)

We had a losing season WITH conVick! It’s not like we are going to the Super Bowl or even the playoffs with him. I’ll bet Petrino’s already seen plenty of coach-killing tendencies (inability to read defenses, inaccuracy, poor decision making, physical vulnerability) with him and has concluded that it might be ok to do without the distractions and the abysmal QB rating that comes with Ookie Mexico!

I think it would be a media circus and hard for vick to pull it off, but your article makes sense. Your paying the guy, might as well as use him. But there are going to be a lot of people doing dog barking calls at the dome and especially in enemy territory. :( And if Vick got ticked at some fans, I was at the game when he flipped the birds. Is he going to go nuts again, because thats going to be lite compared to what its going to be like if he shows up.

Based on Blank’s comments today I believe Vick is out of here. I note he includes the Falcons’ sponsors and the Atlanta community as two of his concerns - that tells me all I need to know. Even if he is not convicted Vick cannot escape the stain on his character associated with these charges, a stain that will be unacceptable to sponsors and a large percentage of Falcons fans. I believe Blank will take a little time to make sure he fully understands all the options, and then take the only prudent course of action from a business perspective.

MB, Normally I’d agree that Vick > Harrington. There’s just one little detail your forgetting about… Vick’s supposed to be the QB and the leader of the team. Maybe he really is superman and he’ll be able to pull off weekly superhuman feats as QB, all while working with his legal team on a regular basis and making trips to and from Virginia… maybe. And maybe, Petrino will have enough time to deal with the Vick circus on the field in addition to implementing an offense that even Chris Redman says is difficult to learn.
But, then again, maybe Blank would be best served to set the TEAM he owns free for the season (or at least until Vick’s legal process is completed) by suspending Vick with pay and allowing the rest of the Falcons to concentrate on football instead of interstate dogfighting allegations.

Do the right thing, Falcons and media. Let him play if his contract can be fulfilled. Let legal due process work.
Media: give it a rest unless there is breaking news.
IF HE’S GUILTY, he’s in jail and all the contractual obligations are voided until he’s too old to play. I’m sure there is a particular place in @%#@%$ reserved for child molesters and animal cruelty practitioners.

One more point - the Falcons were already preparing their insurance policy for life without Vick. A bigger O-line, a bruising fullback to suit a North South running back, a coach who will go with four receiver sets - why have a bunch of receivers for a QB unable to deliver finesse passes? To me the Falcons offense is already on the way to being less dependent on Vick. The D looks pretty damn good to me - this team now needs consistent, non-flashy offense and that’s where they are headed.

Hard to compare Kobe and Budweiser(Furcal) to Vick. Each played in individual sports that allowed them to take time away, show up on gameday and play. Vick is not afforded that luxury. He has to be able to be in meetings, go thru all the drills with his teammates if he expects to be able to stand in the huddle and command respect from his fellow teammates. I agree that no solution is easy, but ethically speaking Vick owes it to the franchise to step away and clear this up. This is a time where he needs to put his teammates first.

Here we go again. Mike Vick is a problem because he divides the people of Atlanta along racial lines. Whites are accused of being haters. What is wrong with hate? Someone who tortures helpless beings for fun is hateful. It is not because of the hip hop clothes, the jewelry or the braids. It’s the Ron Mexico incident, the water bottle, the finger, the blunt - and now, most despicably, the animal torture. It has nothing to do with whether the man’s “style” makes us uncomfortable. He is a lowlife, period, and it’s no fun to cheer for him. I’ve lived in Atlanta all my life, but I wrote off the Falcons before this happened (the water bottle was my breaking point). And it’s not so much Vick, it’s the way his constant issues keep dividing blacks and whites in this city. I’m going to ignore the Falcons until he goes away. Go Braves!

Michael,
Step up and do the right thing now. Schedule a press conference tomorrow to state that you are taking a leave of absence from the team while the judicial process runs its course.
You have already put the team in a bad predicament. Be a man and handle your biz.
The team does not need daily distractions at Training Camp or protests not only at the Georgia Dome but on the road. You could out everyone in danger on the road where you may be showered with profanities at the least if not actual items.
The team WILL move on. Will you be a part of it? Time will tell.

This is an ethical dilema at least. Michael Vick is only one person on a 53 man squad. We have failed to address what message we are sending if we let him play to the rest of the team. Will there be chemistry? Will everyond feel they are of equal importance if they are disciplined for lesser infractions?
Punishment for crimes or infractions should be just and evenly applied. Pac Man Jones should still be playing according to the logic of wins and losses. I have total empathy with this position, I am sick of losing!! But I can not support an organization who will sell themselves out just to win especially if the soul of the team loses. If the Falcons suspended Michael or grant him a leave of sbsence and the team loses due to the quarterback play then he should bear that weight becasuse his actions put us in that position, guilty or not. If Vick plays then I want Pac Man and Tank to play as well, after all Pac Man hasn’t been convicted and Tank wasn’t drunk driving and teams need them. Finally, this is not about black and white and really, a racist statement is a lazy man’s stooping and grasping at hollow straws in an attempt to divert the focus of a poorly prepared position.
Crank up your inteligence and lets share thoughts and views without the garbage of racism.

I would have more respect for the ATL Falcons at 2-14 with Joey Harrington, than 11-5 with Michael Vick. Thats what is wrong with our culture. Its more important to teach your young future stars that its okay to be a thug and win sports games than have character. Damn the NFL and Arthur Blank, if they don’t let everyone, not just ATL, know that this type of foolishness and disrespect for the law cannot be tolerated. And I only wonder if it was DJ Shockley or some other second or third team member, would the wavier wires already been lit up?

Your column puts winning and losing on the same par as right and wrong? And figures, hey, if we win, who cares how atrocious our players are as human beings? How pathetic. I agree that taking him out before there is a conviction shows respect for his legal rights and our bedrock principle that everyone is innocent until proven guilty.
But to justify it because more money will make his crimes seem less bad is just plain sad.

**For all that think Vick should be suspended now, think this through for a minute because I completely disagree. I beleive most everyone would agree that, if Vick is suspended now and later is found not involved (to be distinguished from merely not guilty beyond a reaonable doubt, or by pulling a Ray Lewis and pleading guilty to a lesser charge) punishing Vick now might be wrong, but the punishment would still be arguably fitting if for no other reason than he did damage the reputation of the team and the league for putting them through this.
What needs to be considered is the flip side. What if Goodel suspends Vick now, for a season, eight games, ten games, or whatever? How will you feel if he is later clearly shown tio be involved (by the evidence at trial irrespective of the ultimate verdict of guilt or acquittal)? The cry for punishment AFTER the trial will be deafening, even if he pleads and stays out of jail, which seems to be logical given the money, lawyers and influence Vick will have. At that point, the hypothetically-guilty Vick would then be free to don his uniform, almost assuredly free of any further NFL punishment. Vick will not be subject to a second punishment by the NFL for the same offense. The Union and labor laws would not likely permit that. As such, the hypothetically-guilty Vick comes back and there is nothing Goodell could do to him, having already punished him to appease those who want to toss Vick now.
You may not want to see him skate now, but imagine how you will feel if he later cuts a deal, rolls on his co-conspirators, and gets a lenient sentence down the road. He would waltz right back into the NFL, and I suspect there would be nothing the NFL or Goodell could do about it then. Those of you wanting to rush to punishment should bear that in mind. The rush to judgment and punishment could come at a terrible price for those who are concerned with the moral issue.
That said, I truly hope Vick is not involved and that he gets to clear his name soon. As a season ticket holder and a longtime fan of the franschise, I want to field the best team possible, now and for the forseeable future. As a person, I like the guy and don’t want to think that he could be guilty, though I must admit that there is that possibility. I can’t advocate strongly enough for the emotional reaction to die down a bit and to let clear heads prevail on this topic. Whether you think he is innocent like I hiope he is or whther you are 100% certain that he is guilty, the only logical choice fior the league is to wait this out. If he is uninvolved, then punish him reasonably for the embarrassment. If he turns out guilty, then the NFL can (and unfortunately for my team bragging rights, the NFL should) bring the hammer down on him. This is the only way that the punishment can fit the crime.**

First of all, I feel that Vick cost the Falcons a lot of games as opposed to winning them. He’s a showboat. Hed’s not a smart quarterback - he’s a fast quarterback who can run with the ball. Yet, in the past few seasons, it seems like he runs first, passes second. When he does pass, it’s nothing spectacular - 20 TDs, 13 Int’s last season with an overall QB rating of 75.7 - which places him on the bottom half of the QB rankings. He’s not a “winning” QB (certainly not in relation to the likes of Manning, Palmer, Brees, Brady, etc.) - he’s a marketing machine. Marketing machines may or may not win games (see Brian Bosworth, Rocket Ismail, Terrell Owens, et al). He is obviously a selfish individual - another characterstic that doesn’t lend itself to building a winning sports franchise. He consistently makes decisions off (and on) the field of play that have a negative impact on his team. Sure, his breakaway games bring fans, but guess what? So do team players who win championships. I think men like Joey Harrington and DJ Shockley have it in them to be that kind of player. I feel that both men bring a level of respect to the field that their teammates can get behind. Vick is not a team player or a leader.
My vote is for Shockley (and this is coming from a Tech fan). He embodies team play. When I think about the patience that young man exhibited playing behind David Greene for four years, I am awed. In this age of selfishness, contract hold-outs, thug/redneck behavior off the field, etc. Shockly made a sacrifice for his team - and it paid off. I believe (and I think a lot do) that had Shockley not been injured in a game he had no business playing beyond the half in, UGA would have been national champions in 2005. Did anyone see him in pre-season play last year? He has the tools and the talent and the mental fortitude (as opposed to Vick’s neanderthal immaturity) to build a franchise. Could he step in this year and win the Super Bowl? Of course not. But given two or three years, he could. No doubt.
Let’s say good riddance to Vick. We don’t need “dirty birds.” We need Falcons.

This is a situation that Mr. Blank helped create for himself. In his efforts to be the ‘father figure’ and using his so-called ‘tough love’, he has painted himself into a corner. In dealing with his problem child, he has done nothing more than create an atmosphere where the only consequence for bad behavior is a stern lecture. So, why should anyone expect anything more?
There are reports today that Michael Vick has called Mr. Blank and apologized for this latest episode. I’m sure he sounded contrite and all the while professed innocence to the charges at hand. If recent history is our guide, we can surmise that Mr. Blank issued yet another stern lecture, signed another pay check and sent his prodigal son outside to play without so much as losing dessert or missing his favorite TV show.
Michael Vick wil rest assured, knowing that Mr. Blank still loves him. He can now go about his merry way without showing any love in return and let Mr. Blank deal with the press, the fans, the dog lovers and the NFL.

This time Vick can’t blame his offensive linemen, wide receivers, and coaches. Why don’t you take the blame Blank, since he is your HERO?! I read your statement about how tired, stressed, sick, worried, and about to throw-up, about this matter. You talk about being a role model and keeping up the teams image. The fans have spoken and nobody wants to keep Vick! What has the man got to do to get CUT loose? You are to weak to do it. All you care about is the dollar!! You talked 10 minutes in your statement and did not say anything that anybody could understand. I thought Vick was dumb, but there is one person dumber, that is the person that he STUCK for $130,000,000.00. Let’s face it Vick and Blank have both GONE to the DOGS!!!!

A lot of media is fueling this frenzy without real research into contract law or respect for judicial process. Specifically, Don Banks’ SI article is totally unresearched & emotional bile spraying through cyberspace.
I’m also not looking forward to *Not-Innocent Michael Irvin’s “dissentary” * (sorry, it won’t rise to the level of commentary) during the season.
Petrino as coach can decide to bench/ play players within their contracts. If Vick’s hoopla is too damaging to the team, Petrino will sit him or leave him off the plane.
And guess what, A LOT OF PLAYERS WILL TAKE A HELMETING FOUL TO KNOCK MV7 AROUND during games so he may not be playing for long if he does suit up and run out on to the opposing team’s field to the tune of “who let the Dogs out?” This isn’t a cakewalk for Vick, whether or not he is the ogre detailed in the indictment.
P.S. My apologies for the multiple posts earlier. Ironically, I was petting my dog who was nuzzling my wrist next to the keyboard.

When Michael was the “face” of the Falcons he brought in money. Will he cost the team money if he stays? His endorsements have dried becasue of his behavior so if the team and Author decide to support him this will cost the team even more money than he and his PR disaster can compensate for. I wonder if Author thinks about how his team will be remembered for? Would he prefer that he brought a true winner to Atlanta, something the Smiths could not or a two faced a$$ who overspent on a below average passer that guaranteeed s superbowl in five years and seven years is on no position to deliver.
If Michael is on the field I will not be in the stands, period until this is fully resolved. If Author wants to stand by the character of Vick he can stand alone as far as I am concerned. There is way to much infomration and more coming that makes the face of the Falcons look like a dead dog.
Michael, go away clean up this mess if you can return.

Mark, if you or I were indicted on federal charges … for a repugnant, sickening, revolting crime that is counter to the human decency of 99 percent of all humans … we would be suspended without pay — AT BEST.
At worst, we would be fired on the spot for embarrassing the good name of our employers.
Do you really think Michael Vick’s ability to win football games should buy him a pass?
If the City of Atlanta tolerates his presence on the field, it will say even more about Atlanta than it does the Atlanta Falcons.

I find it really disturbing that people will take wins over the morally right thing to do. The Feds have a 95% conviction rate. They would not take a high profile person down if they didn’t have rock solid proof. Blank may be forced to do something if the court of public opinion gets so strong that it affects the franchise.

Please step in a restore some integrity to the Falcons’s and the city of Atlanta. Did Mike lie to the NFL commissioner or to Arthur Blank? If he lied to either, he should be suspended by the league for the whole season or until he is convicted in both state and federal court. The Vick should be cut because no one will trade for him. The next all world quarterback needs to be psychologically tested to see if he can lead a team, mentally as well as athletically. Arthur Blank better quit being a buddy to players and start being a business man who cuts losers and mentally challenged steroid freaks.

Ths should not be a question of wins or loses, it should be a question of basic humanity which obviously Vick lacks. If it were the first time for a nefarious incident it might be possible to say- let the legal system run its course. It is NOT the first time, he deserves to be treated just as those poor dogs were. It is his property, he is responsible. If the Falcons and their fans cannot see that winning a “football game” ranks somewhere down with playing tiddley-winks compared to the abuse those poor animals suffered then all of you who support Vick need to be treated like the animals too. What is right should not even be in the same comparison column with winning a game. That’s all it is folks- a game. Get that, it counts for nothing in the scheme of life’s values. Become a human being, boycott those who support that piece of garbage, stand up for what is right. Animals are NOT disposable soda bottles for the enjoyment of people to shoot at or mistreat in any other way. Think on this
A man of kindness, to his beast is kind, Brutal actions show a brutal mind. Remember, He who made the brute, Who gave thee speech and reason, formed him mute; He can’t complain; but God’s omniscient eye Beholds his cruelty. He hears his cry. He was destined thy servant and thy drudge, But know this: His creator is thy judge. ~~~~~~~old Shaker poem

Seriously, the Falcs will be better off without Vick even on the field.
It was clear to me two years ago that he’s too stupid to ever figure out how to run an NFL offense and make solid decisions on the field. I said he should be traded back then and everyone laughed at me. Anyway, Harrington obviously has the tools and perhaps this is the perfect situation for him: ZERO pressure. No one expects anything from him. Vick is a dead man walking from a football standpoint in ATL—-time to move on. I just hope he gets convicted so we can get out of his contract.

It’s absolutely disgusting how people seem to think all that matters is winning. I dont want the Falcons to win if Vick is playing. And for the person who said all pit bulls should be exterminated, you need to do some more research. Pit Bulls that attack humans are usually not treated very well. Pit Bulls are more prone to violence more than most dogs, but that just means it takes more effort to train them. There are many pit bulls who make excellent pets.

They pumped up Vick’s head till he thought he could walk on water and now they are paying the price. Let the three of them stew in the same pot. Petrino is the one to feel sorry for. It is time to rid the Falcons of Vick.. too many repeating incidents, which take away from the integrity of the team.. the entire Falcon family should not be penalized for the issues this brings to the season.. ‘innocent until proven guilty’ is the way of the law and into court, but as to the team position, too much negative influence on this one player is crippling, no matter what people think.. it destabilizes the entire team concept.. too many unknowns, but a consistency in the same person eroding the fabric of decency and goodwill.. and, Blank should go with him.. does not have Bernie anymore and the reasons that the board asked him to leave Home Depot are pretty evident in the way he has handled Vick the entire way… too much false ego in both of them.. this has ceased to be anything but a dog and pony shame show of ‘art n vic’ and is not fair to the rest of the Falcon community… try and be men and get the hell out…

I’m not from Atlanta, but after reading the local comments here and many others from all corners of the nation, it’s clear that the Falcons and the NFL must suspend Mr. Vick, because allowing him to play until completion of due process places in serious jeopardy the safety of Mr. Vick, his teammates, and anyone else in their company. This is an extremely volatile, racially-charged issue, and no matter where you stand on it, we can probably all agree that the environment surrounding Mr. Vick and the Falcons this season will be ugly beyond belief in opposing stadiums. So for the safety of all concerned, the Falcons should suspend Mr. Vick with pay with a stipulation that he will be welcomed back with open arms and a public apology if he is vindicated, or reimburse the organization if he is found guilty of these horrible crimes.
And to anyone who thinks they are not horrible crimes simply because the world has bigger problems and the victims are “just dogs”, I’d respectfully ask you to consider that compassion for those that suffer in pain and fear is the single most important trait that defines and separates humanity. Without understanding and empathy for the suffering of lesser creatures, how can we possibly have the same for the suffering humans around us? Whether you’re black, red, white or yellow, a vegetarian or a meat-eater, a PETA member or a fur farm operator, the key to humanity is compassion for any being that suffers combined with courage and fortitude to stand against cruelty whenever it is encountered. If that means the Falcons must spend a few bucks and lose a few games this year, I’m sure from what I’ve heard of the proud City of Atlanta, that they and their fans of all races are up to the task.

Mark Bradley, go wash you mouth out with soap. This article is disturbing. In fact you can ride with AB to the local Crisis Intervention Unit for evaluation. I no doubt that someone else will be running the first team offense come training camp.

First…why is anyone surprised Vick did this sort of thing?? Dog-fighting is a very popular thing in the hip-hop culture and Vick has already proved he belongs in that kind of sewer environment. Also…rest easy Mr. Blank and you Falcon fans…he isn’t going anywhere. The NFL and Blank will let him play and besides…does any betting person out there want to wager on his verdict? If that jury has enough African American folks on it, then Vick will go free ala OJ. He will not see one day of any jail.

If he is half the “Superman” he claims to be, he will take a voluntary leave of absence and let his employer and his teammates focus on football instead of him for a change.
He won’t
If Arthur Blank is half the savvy business man and moralizing owner he pretends to be, he will force Vick to take a “voluntary” leave of absence for the good of his team, not to mention football.

Michael Vick and the team had a great game and I cheered myself hoarse. This year, I’m heading to the USA again on vacation and hope to see at least one Falcons game. I’m waiting to see what the Falcons are going to do before I buy a ticket. I can’t cheer for Michael Vick with something like this hanging over his head. So yes, Mark, after flying 9000 miles to see a game I’d be happy to watch Joey Harrington and the Falcons lose. At least I could cheer with all my heart and a clear conscience.

any company that has an employee under indictment would suspend the employee (usually with pay) until issues were fully resolved. Most would also consider termination. This should be the standard applied here. I am personally disappointed in the NFL and in Arthur Blank for not approaching it that way. Frankly, anything else is simply an excuse and rhetoric. I hope Vick was not actually involved in any of this and if so is cleared. If he was, then he should serve appropriate penalties. Blank could go ahaed and do the “right Thing” now.

I wonder: how many NFL defensive players have dogs that they are very fond of? How many of his teammates will find it just a little harder to block for him (it’s hard to complete a pass from under a pile of linebackers)? How long it will take them to “find” Mr. Vick on the playing field? How many games it will take before he is out for the season with an injury? I weep for America that we have come to this. Very good and very fair article, Mark Bradley. Like you said, a lot of people are going to be p** off regardless of what the Falcons do. Because of that, I think the Falcons will probably let him play until he plea bargains or a verdict is passed. But I do think that at some point, he is going to go to jail for something, probably a lesser charge as part of a plea bargain. And when this happens, the resulting NFL suspension will probably be enough to convince Blank to terminate his contract. Unfortunately, I’m pretty sure this will be #7’s last season in Atlanta. Memo to future pro athletes: if you want to hold an underground criminal enterprise on your property, don’t let your weed-dealing cousin stay on that property and get caught.

Blank is a businessman. If you do not like his decisions, cancel your season tickets and shop at Lowes.
As for Mark’s chance to slam Duke outside of basketball season, it is easy to say Duke goofed with the 20-20 vision of hindsight and the determination the DA was the one committing crimes, but I think we are about to find out how Duke’s season would have played out in 2006 with protests at every game if the season had not been scrubbed. As a Chicagoan and a Chicago Bears fan who happily gave Tank Johnson a “second, third, um…fourth chance”, I can assure you it’s better for Atlanta to say Hasta la Vista to Vick sooner than later. But I think the real issue isn’t about should he play or not. The real issue is children look up to this man as an athlete (right or wrong.. they do.) So what message are we sending our sons and daughters when we say it’s okay for you to kill “Sparky”, and all of his lesser performing offspring, as long as you can throw a football. Atlanta has an opportunity here. The country is watching and trust me, it will be Atlanta that suffers if Vick is allowed to stay employed by the Falcons. So stop whining and debating about this and kick his “bad newz” a* to the curb. The respect will outweigh any wins Vick can bring you.

In Blank’s pathetic PR release, he mentioned only the inconvenience to fans, and nothing about the pain and suffering of the dogs. That is the problem with 2007 USA.
And, whether you like it or not, want to hear it or not, Vick is also the face of African-Americans overseas. And a lot of people don’t have much respect for what they see, especially considering the absolute silence by the African-American community on this.

Here is a copy of a e-mail I sent to the ATL Falcons contact page on website earlier today I sincerely hope Arthur Blank does the right thing and cancels M.Vick’s contract. Vick is no asset to the Falcons or to football in general. It’s well known fact when the Feds indict someone they have the facts to get a conviction. Vicks ties to dog fighting and the horrific inhumane, disgusting, shocking, sickening, death methods of the losing dogs is so repulsive it’s difficult for one’s mind to fathom. Mr.Blank, cut your losses and use your back up QB or sign someone new who can restore dignity and integrity to the Atlanta Falcons. If you allow this sociopath Vick’s to remain a Falcon you are in effect saying you condone cruelty to animals. Remember one is known by the company they keep. Myself and ten’s of thousands of people pray you will drop Vick. We can all cheer the Falcons on for the new season without Vick.

He should play. They were just dogs. Dogs that kill people. What about our bush? He’s responsible for 1,000 deaths. This world is wrong. A rich black athlete better watch out. Print that

I must say this: Falcon fans want to win at any cost! I am not a football fan period! When Montana retired, I did too! I do not recall Atlanta being ranked very high in Vegas betting as to Super Bowl choices! Play Vick, loose games, maybe win some games, but you loose your soul at the same time! You guys bet on a stone looser, so smile and bare it!

Harrington is a much better q-back than his pro record shows. BUT…Vick covers up for what has been, and probably still will be, only an average o-line. Whereas Harrington, to be above average, will need an above average o-line. If Vick does not play, most people will feel better about the team, but the team will struggle to go .500. With Vick they have about a 50-50 chance of the play-offs. Bradley is right, it’s a Hobson’s choice. I vote for Harrington, .500 ball, and (old-fashioned word) a little “honor.”

Mark,
You and many of the sports columnists / experts are missing the boat on this animal cruelty case involving Michael Vick. This isn’t a bar fight gone bad. This isn’t a DUI or a drug problem. This isn’t a spousal abuse or even an alledged rape problem. Many sports fans can envision themselves in those kind of situations. The old “there but for the grace of god” line. This is cruelty to “man’s best friend.”
As Cowheard pointed out today on his ESPN radio show, you can go to the movies and see people die in all kinds of gruesome ways, and the audience will hardly blink. But let a dog get killed, and there won’t be a dry eye in the place. I’ll never forget the John Wayne movie “Big Jake”. Why did “Dog” have to die?
As for the phrase “innocent until proven guilty” that I have heard a thousand times in the past 3 days, that is a misquote. Presumed innocent, in the eyes of the law, is the proper phrasing. Michael Vick may beat the rap, but he is not innocent. He owned Bad Newz Kennels, an operation known to abuse dogs. He owned the property where animal abuse occurred. He is not innocent.
We Falcon fans are not going to allow Michael Vick represent us. Winning football games is not that important.

Anyone that kills vicious pit bulls should be commended not ostracized….Saying a pit bull is a nice dog no matter how they are brought up is like Sigfried and Roy saying Tigers can be tamed too….

Well, being from Cincinnati and a Bungles fan, and going 8-8 with mos of our miscreants playing, I say “Go for it, Atlanta!” We in Cincinnati need some city to take over as laughing stock of the NFL, we’ve done our duty.

Long time fan. My vote: suspend him for the season or until his case concludes. Can any of us imagine the level of “BOO’s” he will get even at the GA Dome. Can you imagine what he—and the rest of the Falcons, are going to face when they play anywhere? Too big distraction. He’s gotta sit. We have to distance. Arthur—in another time—I was you.

Jon is your name really Jon Nifong….Were you there? Tell us the details of what you saw? I just think your a jerk but I am not going to assume that since I have not met you…that does not make you a jerk. I have to get all the facts before I determine if you are truly a jerk. Say what you want Innocent till Proven Guilty….and if proven guilty then he will pay or maybe he should just go straight to jail that seems to be what everybody thinks….Lets just scrap the whole judicial process and let the public opinion convict him in fact I am sure you would like to stone him in front of the courthouse, wouldnt you? Sorry to see your brother Mike lost his job over the Duke case hope he lands on his feet in quicksand….

Use the correct and blunt terms in these allegations:
SERIAL DOG MURDERER
Is this going to be our QB so we can win? Hell with winning, this is more important; winning?… do you think vick brings a guarantee of winning? Give us a break, I say cut him now, we will be doing the right thing

I do not believe a sports team should win at all costs. I think Blank is a coward & should MAKE Vick take a leave of absence with pay - he can use the time to mount a defense. BTW - were any drugs found on the property? Perhaps the locals can file those charges.

911, give us some 411. Are you a negro? Mighty quick to throw out that redneck slur boy! Vick is guilty and he’s going to jail. By the way, I have nothing against Mexicans or Gays and I love women. Please tell yo mammy “howdy” for me.

I’ll bet Blank was ready to sit Vick while the jury was out, until the NFL said it was ok for him to play. Wow! All child-killing pit bulls should be put to sleep…not just eight.

I wish to hone in Blank’s disappointment in the Vick events. From the time Vick arrived he singled him out for special attention, if not special treatment. It is this act that also affects his ownership of professional team. When you run a business there is a distance the owner must keep from his employees, and Blank seem to abuse this long standing policy. I think it affected coaches, and their ability control the direction of the team. Hopefully, this will make him understand that he needs to stay in the owners box, and off the field. If he likes certain players, he must avoid that from being shown to the team. I think the that 95% of Federal indictments are won (ESPN statistic), Vick’s time with Falcons should be short. Pay him if you will, but keep him away from the team. The constant focus on this issue will sabotage any chance this team has of being successful.

For those that say winning isn’t important or they’ll support a 1-15 team are quite frankly NOT true sports fans. They may occasionally watch a game or maybe even go to a game, but they don’t live and breathe it like a true sports fan. The issue of morality in sports is a misnomer. It doesn’t exist. Time and time again America tend to forgive our sports heroes for any transgression if they perform on the field. Whether it’s involvement in homicides (Lewis), charged with rape (Bryant), doing drugs (Irvin), participate in drug transactions (Lewis) or commit multiple domestic disturbances (Pittman) we’re very forgiving if you perform on the field. I personally will forgive anything short of murdering a human being if a player can take this team to a Super Bowl and win it.

I’ve been volunteering with a pit bull rescue group for the last 3 years and have fostered more than 20 pit bulls. I have learned that these animals are extremely intelligent, sensitive and people oriented animals. Sadly, it is their people orientation that is exploited by people like Michael Vick for the purpose of the cruel and inhumane (sick) “hobby” of dog fighting. The cruelty and violence that Vick has unquestionably been apart of is of unthinkable consequence and a disgrace. If the NFL, team, and city of Atlanta does ot publicly acknowledge this, all are complicit in the circle of violence that will continue to cause extreme suffering and negatively influence future generations.
Michael Vick is a role model for countless youth and young adults—what choice is there but to take a strong stance on this issue by suspending him??? The dogs were found on his property!! How can the team and the city justify supporting him?
The American Temperement Test Society does temperement testing on all dog breeds. The American Pit bull Terrier test more positively (e.g. has sounder temperements) than do Golden Retrievers, Collies, Spaniels, and most small breed dogs just to name a few. Check out the website. http://www.atts.org/statistics.html
The cruel and disgusting actions of people like Vick result in aggressive dogs, putting all of us at risk. As a society we need to be better informed, and punish those that perpetuate violence and cruelty.

It’s a shame that dogs are tortured for years, possibly (more than likely), at the hands of this man and all many people can think about winning football games (which he didn’t do much of anyway)…what has our world come to….people are disgusting!
