Braves have bigger problems than squabble

Jeff Schultz

The worst thing about this is it’s not even a he said/he said. What do you call this: He suggested/he perceived?

Whatever happened to the days when guys just threw punches?

Can’t this team even fight right?

“I think if anybody questioned whether or not someone is hurt, you’re questioning their heart, their integrity, their dignity,” Chipper Jones said Sunday. “Most people don’t react [well] to having their heart questioned.”

OK, I get it. Chipper got his feelings hurt because John said something he shouldn’t have (and for the record, I find it difficult to believe that EVERYBODY took certain remarks one way when Smoltz meant them another).

Chipper got mad. John got upset.

Back in the day, this kind of exchange often was followed by, “Oh yeah!?! Meet you after school! By the bike racks!”

Hey, here’s an idea guys: Win a game.

The Braves shifted into damage control Sunday. They’re not used to having even the most mild of squabbles play out publicly. The dugout and the clubhouse belong to Bobby Cox. Everything else belongs to John Schuerholz, who assured all of us: “We are a team full of humans. I’ve never signed an android.” (For the record, Dan Kolb was animal, vegetable or mineral.)

But the uniqueness of this situation — an open disagreement between two team leaders (for the sake of argument) — shouldn’t lead anybody to believe the clubhouse is being ripped apart at the seams.

If you want to play amateur psychologist and project that this venting somehow will turn into a great bonding agent for the Braves, have at it, Dr. Jung.

But a group hug by Cox, Smoltz and Chipper is not suddenly going to make sense of the Braves rotation or help Andruw Jones break .200 because, like, duh.

As far for fights, or arguments, or whatever, they happen all the time. (Jones: “We’re together eight months out of the year. You’re gonna have little riffs here and there. We’ve had our share.”) The Braves just do a better job than most keeping things quiet.

Other teams and managers have a different philosophy.

Some just don’t care.

Jim Leyland, the Detroit Tigers’ manager, is as beloved by his players as Cox. But he has operated around bonfires his entire career. In Pittsburgh, he managed Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonilla and other assorted explosives. He has twice managed Gary Sheffield, whose interviews can be a daily stream of unconsciousness.

This whole concept of getting along — way overrated, Leyland said.

“I know that’s always been big with some people — clubhouse chemistry,” Leyland said. “That’s the most overblown thing in the world. It’s all bull. When I was in Pittsburgh, we had fights in the clubhouse. Did it matter? We still won three division titles. I’ve had teams that went out to dinner together and chapel together and they couldn’t win a freakin’ game.

“It’s big in the media, ‘Oh, he’s great in the clubhouse.’ Let me tell you something: I don’t give a [hoot] what he’s like in the clubhouse. I care what he’s like in the batter’s box, on the mound, or shortstop, or centerfield. People are different. Personalities are different. That’s OK.”

Leyland did not want to address the Braves’ situation. But he has been in similar situations. He never cared.

“Do I want my players talking about a teammate in the newspaper? I really don’t care if they do or not,” Leyland said. “But they’ve got to be held accountable — not by me, but by their teammate or somebody else. If some player wants to say, ‘Jim Leyland is a horse[bleep] manager, then say it. The next day I might say, ‘Maybe he’s right. But I think he’s a horse[bleep] player.’ I don’t have a problem with people speaking their mind.”

The Braves: Different story. Cox hates this (“It’s over. It’s all taken care of. Enough said.”). He orchestrated the meeting of the angry minds Sunday.

Smoltz spoke on briefly, calling it a “total misunderstanding.”

Jones, who homered Saturday and started again Sunday, says he’s playing now because he feels better, not because he perceived he was being called out.

Also this: “We’re both a little embarrassed that it got outside this clubhouse.”

Fact is, the Braves have several reasons to be embarrassed. But look on the field, look in the standings. This should be way down the list.

Smoltz should not have put his comments in the paper, but you have to ask yourself would Chipper be in the lineup if Smoltz had not made the comments?

I think it’s bad news when guys start fighting. I guess the question is: will they rally around this or will the Braves continue to crumble? I hope that they have the character to rally and play better, but as long as the starts are winning only 1 of every 3 decisions and Andruw is hitting so poorly that a 1 for 5 night would RAISE his average, I doubt it.

Probably not. I saw the interview That JS was just having on Sunday Night Baseball and it infuriated me. Is his plan just sit there until we do something in the standings (which will probably be falling farther and farther behind the Mets?) Get on the phones and try to put a package together to get Buerhle. I’m sick of marking down an automatic loss unless Smoltz is pitching. (and even that’s not a sure thing)

This team needs an overhaul of some of the big salaries that are preventing us from putting the best 25 players on the roster. Andrew isn’t performing at a rate half of what he’s getting now, and Hampton is at home eating popcorn opening his paychecks and laughing hysterically.

Those comments by Leyland were total B.S. Hard to believe a professional could really have that attitude. Sounds like the kind of crap that managers/coaches bray about when their team is on a roll. He talks about his Pitt team fighting in the clubhouse and still winning three division championships. The fact that the Braves typically don’t have these sibling rifts is a huge reason why they won almost five times that many.

Your title says it all. And your interview with Leland puts this in perspective. Bottom line Chipper definitely respects John enough to give him some slack and John feels the same about Chipper at the end of the day. It is these super competitive natures that cause the combustion which the media needs occasionally to entertain themselves by.

The more these problems occur the more we will appreciate the string of titles we/they won. This rough stretch of road is something to use to appreciate the best of what has happened. We still hold the succession of players dear who contributed each to the process. And to those who came later, well that’s the breaks and the opportunities of the game.

Best of luck and God Speed! Chipper, John, Bobby and the rest of them. regards from Japan,

How do you call 13 straight seasons batting over .300 goldbricking? Goldbricking is getting paid $14 million a year and batting .198. Everyone is complaining about Chipper Jones not wanting to play, but he is injured and he does want to play. I think its messed up how everyone hates on Chipper when he has better numbers than half the team and he’s been on the DL.

Just a little vent from me. I agree with Josh. I say we get Buerhle or some other good starter. I’d feel pretty confident in Smoltz, Hudson, James, and another solid pitcher. And I like Thorman, but I wouldn’t mind seeing the Bravos trying to get big time first baseman.

It’s not that Larry is a turd.

Larry doesn’t have any heart. He’s the Tin Man. There’s no beating heart beneath his chest. No fiery emotions. He’s not a leader of men. He’s a pampered fool, albeit one with a 9th grade level education. Oh yeah, did I forget, the man is dumb as bricks.

Which means he and Cox have a lot in common. Cox is the Scarecrow. No brain, you see.

Baseball has been, for the most part, the only pro league over the last century that doesn’t require at least a year of college. The dumbest athletes on this planet reside in MLB. Why do you think the Union has so much power over the players who are supposed to be able to control it? Because they’re too dumb to realize that the Union serves at their pleasure. Add that the poor, destitute, and illiterate 16 year olds that teams are allowed to sign from the Latin countries, and the IQ in MLB is sub-Gump level.

So, Larry’s unintelligence isn’t exactly unique. But come on, has anyone actually heard the man talk? Dumb as bricks!

Hey, Edo, I hate to break it to you, but the Braves didn’t win “titles.” They won ONE title. The rest of those 14 season (except the one), the royaly failed in the playoffs. Four of those times (91, 93, 96, 97), they were egregious choke jobs perpetuated by the worst postseason manager in the history of MLB (Cox). Just wanted to set the record straight.

Who gives a rat’s patootie?

This is a bad team assembled with zero forethought. Wow, the fantasy genie said in the spring, what a great starting rotation we will have!! Jack bought the magic beans, chased them with some kool-aid and presto, Mike Hampton, he who hasn’t pitched since Hoover was President was gonna win 15+ games. Riiiggghhttt! Chuck James, with a few games under his belt was to be the second coming of Tom Glavine. Give me a break. McCay McBride, oh yeah, gone. Kyle Davies? Sheesh, actually threw a decent game yesterday but generally as wretched in a game as another Dick Cheney speech. Oops, that was political, strike that.

Then you have the bullpen, Paronto, a never been, viewed as a solid member. Some people thought Lance Cormier had potential, as what, a gas can? An offense that can’t hit, can’t score duh!! Who was willing to gamble first base on another unproven player? See a common theme here? Yeah, who signed Craig Wilson? Who signed the other losers, Sturtze etc. Does the GM have any accountablility?

What a worthless, soulless, dispirited bunch. Oh yeah, as predicted, Hudson came back down to earth. Another waste. No pitching, no hitting, no leadership= no chance.

Pour the dirt on em.

Please release Woodward. I can’t bare to watch him kill any more rallies. And also, the Braves need to realize the fact that their current 3, 4, and 5 starters are good for only 5 innings before they fall apart. If they start going to the bullpen after 5 innings then the chances for avoiding the now common 4 or 5 run sixth inning will be greater.

Please release Woodward. He is a cancer for the team.

One run in 45 inningss. Is that a baseball record or something ? I put the blame on Management. They have destroyed this team and turned us into the Royals. They would not allow us to go out and get a Vlad,Soriano, Arod, .etc. They made us get rid of our good o players like Furcal, and Gilies. If they spent money and we still lost ala the Yankees. I would not be upset. I am mad because ownership did not give us a fighting chance. When you have two good O players and a bunch of rookies this going to happen. This choke is more upsetting than last year. Because it seems like we quit. What do you guys think ? I also want to apologize for all the stupid things I have said on Jlamont76 and Jlamont77. The upsetting thing about this whole smoltzie-chipper thing is that if either one of them had kept their mouth shut, then Chipper would have never played Saturday and we’d be sitting on 5 straight shutouts. That’s the real story

By Judy

Smoltz makes a valid point and Chipper takes it personally. Chipper thinks the whole team is about Chipper. He’s a ME-Boy. Hey Chip Dip the team is not about you. Take your surly attitude and ride the pine. I think it’s been proven to the world (since we’ve been on national tv so much lately) that the Braves are a mediocre team. Ok, we’ll play these cards this year but do it with the kids who bust it. Let’s give McCann and Fran a chance to make this “their” team. Chio Chipper.

How can Bobby Cox, one out and two men on in the ninth, with Willie Harris, Scott Thorman and Brian McCann, all left-handed batters sitting on the bench, allow Chris Woodward to bat?, Woodward promptly hit into a double play ending the game. John Schuerholz should quickly replace Woodward with versatile switchhitting Brayan Pena playing catcher, leftfield, third base, first base and designated hitter as well as batting 307 after a slow start at Richmond.

I have finally had a belly full of Cox and the Braves. I know he doesn’t have the talent to beat good clubs, but he can’t even field a team to whip the Washington Nationals. Playing rookies at key positions and depending on veterans who have forgotten how to hit or who can’t show up because of a hang nail on their finger is killing the team. The year is done. Put a fork in it and don’t expect any better next year unless new ownership is found. Not likely to happen and the team will only get worse from year to year. Prepare for a rerun of the late 1980s when the team looked like the Keystone Cops in baseball uniforms.

By rippin2

Yeah, this team is worthless. It starts with Schuerholz trying to pinch pennies by ‘promoting from the farm system’. I mean, can’t we get anyone who has proven that they can actually hit at the big league level? They almost got away with the philosophy last season, then the bullpen cratered. Now the weaknesses are only too exposed. Then Bobby is taking a way-too lackadaisical attitude with these clowns. Call a freakin’ team meeting, and GET P**. Finally, you have to point your finger at Terry Pendleton. He’s preaching ‘hit the ball to the opposite field’. This is a team that used to have incredible power - they live or die by the home run ball. TURN THEM LOOSE Already! How in the hell can someone not hit a homerun, even accidentally (except Chipper), in over 5 games. You would think someone would make contact just by closing their eyes, swinging hard and connecting. Maybe the Mets had the Braves bats switched out for balsa wood or something. When’s the last time anyone even hit a double? It boggles the mind.

Changes needed all around.

Selig should demand new owners. The homeboy upstairs should be fired. Cox should be fired. Pendleton should be fired. McDowell should be tortured and then fired.

McCann should have his fat behind traded. salty should steal his position. Pena should be the backup.

Thorman should be traded. he SUCKS! get anyone to play better than this chump.

KJ is fine but plays with no fire.

Edgar is Grrrrrreatttt! But should be traded because a fire sale is needed and it is time to start over, folks. Let Escobar take his position and then Lillibridge next year with Yunel going over to third and then Andrus takes over at short two years later with Lillibridge going to second and KJ out to left.

Chipper should be traded to the American League. Trade McCann and Chipper to the Yankees for Phillip Hughes.

Diaz is great but should be shipped to the American League.

Harris is great and should be the Braves new Tony Phillips for the next 5 years.

Andruw should have his fatlazyass traded or outright released if he refuses the trade. bring up blanco and brandon jones.

Frenchy better get his head out of his behind or he should be traded.

Trade Smoltz to a contender. He is useless to us if we are not contenders.

Trade Hudson to a contender for the same reasons as Smoltz.

Make Chuck James a middle reliever because that is all that he is anyway.

Trade Kyle Davies or release him.

Trade Wickman to a contender for the same reasons as Smoltz and Hudson.

Keep Soriano.

Do whatever with the rest of the pen.

Call Tony Soprano to figure out what to do with Hampton and his contract. Make him an offer he can’t refuse unless he wants to sleep with the fishes.

It’s time to go to the mattresses boys. And time to leave the canoli at home and bring a gun

Chipper should be traded to the

I’m going to bet that if Jim Leyland had possessed arguably the greatest rotation of all time for about 10 years that he MAY have won more than ONE WORLD SERIES in the same time period that the Hapless, woebegone, Moneyless, Stadiumless, and Fanless Florida marlins have won 2—one of them by Jim Leyland—who really doesn’t care what people say or do in the clubhouse and actually lets his wife speak her mind without fear of consequences.

If Joe Torre started a player(Andruw)and let him stay in the lineup all month inspite of a .130 batting average in June with 6 RBI he would get fired by Steinbrenner so fast he would think Donald Trump was the owner of the Yankees.

Jeff, you sugar-coated it a little but the bottom line is: John Smoltz lied

Of course he was referring to Chipper. To claim he wasn’t now is an insult to our intelligence.

As good a pitcher as he is sometimes,it’s sad that he has settled into a pattern of denial and deception the last three or four years.

This bit about “one bad pitch” or “he hit a great pitch” or “I had my best stuff of the year” after every loss really gets on my nerves.

Be a man and own up to your occasional bad outings. I think even your shrink would agree.

Like any person, sports teams, companies, etc., you go through cold streaks.

Sure the Braves could sure up their pitching staff but look at the beginning of the season when they were several games over 500 and winning series.

They are only a few games out of the east lead and their fire will light.

When they start winning, and they will, all of the other (clubhouse problems) will cease.

Wait and see, I’m right.

The Braves are heading to 4th place in the division. It’s where they belong. (Kinda like water seaking it’s own level.) What a poor product they put on the field. Why anyone would play money to watch this group is beyond me. Go watch a minor league team…costs much less, and you’re sure to see a better brand of baseball. The majority of the 2007 Braves belong on a minor league roster anyway. We aren’t playing poorly because of youth, or the worthless bench (woodword, orr, etc. are even worth capial letters…I’m glad the world was able to see the contributions of woodward Sunday.) Ou “youth problem isn’t so much “YOUTH” as a lack of talent. They are simply over matched on the major league level. Maybe in another year they will be ready to play at that level. Actually, this is JUNE 2006, part 2. This team is such a joke. My hope is that next year the Braves will be ready to compete other major league teams.

Has anybody else noticed that in the 2 plays at the plate this weekend the runner slid safely under the tag and through McCann’s legs both times? What’s up with that? Maybe McCann should’ve asked Pudge for a catching seminar this weekend.

Jeff, you have trashed certain players in this city over and over again. You’ve raised tensions and increased the racial divide. But you and the rest of your cohorts on the sports desk have given Chipper Jones a free pass. He’s sat on his butt more than the entire team put together, but not one ill word from you. Ever since he signed that $93 million contract, Chipper has done nothing to deserve it. Next to Ed Hartwell, he’s the biggest thief in town, so why haven’t you called him out, Jeff???

It is to the point now after watching these last five games that Terry Pendleton —aka——the non-hititing coach——has to accept some of this. Most MLB teams would have canned him after this debacle. I am a hitting instructor at a major Baseball Academy here in Metro Atlanta, and what I see on a daily basis from the bunch makes me “scream” at the TV set !!!!!!!Watching the swings, approaches, pitch selection, mechanics, and lack of total plate discipline shows me that these guys are not being schooled(VIDEO ANALYSIS), ETC….. on how to hit at the major league level.TP needs to GOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!! How can you score ONE run in five games. A blind HOG finds an acorn every onece in a while when he is rooten around. They must have no respect for what TP is telling them , so something has to change ….sorry TP, but you must go. Shake it up Bobby and John !!!!!!! Another FRIGGING wasted summer watching my team sink faster than the Titanic ,,,,what a pity !!

The fact is, Chipper has missed a good part of several seasons with injuries that appear mysterious when compared to other baseball injuries. It is interesting how quickly he recovered when his health became a public issue.

Fighting in the club house is normal. We need to let Smoltz, Chipper and Andruw move on to other places and bring in some young talent. We gave away a lot of this young talent over the 14 year success period in favor of Maddox,Smoltz, Glavine, and the Jones boys. Except for this year, the Jones boys have produced. Since everyone seems to be blaming them for the Braves demise, a change in venue is needed for all involved. Let Smoltz go back to Detroit or into politics. He has been good for Atlanta, but he is a bad influence to the team now. Blaming TP for the hitting woes of the team is ridiculous, but unfortunately that is where the blame will fall.

As for the the rebuild, do not let Salty, McCann, Escobar, Harris, Frenchy or Kelly go to another team in order to get an experienced pitcher with arm trouble. Build pitching within the system and draft wisely. Do not give up on Kyle Daves and Chuck James. Face the fact that the Mets and Phillies are better now and set a goal of returning to the playoffs in three years.

I’ll tell you what I think was the start of this little mini-collapse: the game last week (don’t remember the opponent—the Twins?) when we had a 2-0 lead in the ninth and lost. Hudson was awesome, the set-up guy was 3 up, 3 down, and I went to bed thinking we had won (I did the same thing 15 years ago, the night of the Sid Bream slide, thinking we had lost). It’s games like that one that start small (or bigtime) tumbles.

DD, did you watch Saturday’s game? The player didn’t slide through his legs. The umpire missed the call. The guy’s leg flew up in the air and NEVER touched home plate. I am just sick watching this team. 5 times in a row we have lost and have scored next to nothing. The Mets have allowed us to still be close and we still have a shot if we can wake the hell up. I am ready to see Andruw get benched. He has no business batting for us right now. If Bobby insists on playing him, move him to 8th in the order. Thorman hustles more than anyone on this team. Maybe we need to sit him all the time against left handers and every third day against righties. Platoon Salty over there, but dear God, don’t put Woodward anywhere near the field. Why did we release Wilson if we are not going to release Woodward? I want to scream watching this team. AHHHHHH!

It was interesting to see when the cameras pannned the Braves dugout who was sitting around Smoltz and Jones. Smoltz was surrounded by players who were talking, gestering and laughing with him. Jones was sitting beside some VERY fat man with no players around; Jones and the fat man weren’t talking. Maybe I’ve misinterpreted but this is pretty telling to me. Come on folks the Braves don’t “fire” anyone. It’s up to TP to resign. He’s given a good effort but the players have no intention of listening. I think coaches are just there to baby sit and provide pshycholgy for the players. The promoted coaches of this year are not coaching OR providing the leadership of Jimy, Pat, or Leo. Lastly, again, why aren’t we touting Salty for third. He has a cannon for an arm and 3rd is a reaction position and he has reactions to burn. Ship Chip, give Salty a crash course at 3rd and we’ll be set at 3rd for a decade to come.

It’s not TP’s instructions that are bad, it’s the MAN not following those instructions. The ‘07 Braves are a very weak team on offense and on defense, have no team speed and a pitching staff second to all other teams. These weaknesses were apparent last year, and are only worse this year. They players APPEAR to be very lethargic, and unless several players are benched, the situation will only get worse. It APPEARS the younger players are learning from the veterans how to become proficient losers. Firing BOBBY COX and TP won’t cure the ailment of this team, only the addition of quality players will bring wins.

Wolfman and others, I agree, its panic time and something must change. One, we have to find another starter…Buerle? Two, I love Terry, but he has to go. We do have young hitters, but they are better than this. Watching the Braves is part of my nightly routine, but right now they are unwatchable. I need to find something else on TV. Any suggestions?

I think John Smoltz was right with his comments. Whoever is the lineup that day needs to step up and come to play and have the mind and heart set on winning that day. I don’t believe that Chipper can no longer play a full season and I don’t think you should prepare your team with the mindset that he will be in the lineup for more than 100 games in one season. If his hands are still hurting him like he says which they are probaly are, sit him out the reason of the season to rest and heal his hands and use him as pinch hitter. Give Escobar the experience he needs to season himself as a third baseman. I feel Thorman will be a good first baseman but he needs to be at the minor league working to get better. Salty has proven he is the better player there and has a backup catcher. I think you need to demote Orr and Woodward and bring up utility players that are playing better from the minors. I am not sure what to do with Andruw because he is a good defense player but his bat is killing us. He should not bat any higher than 8th. The pitchers seem to be lost, could it be due to McDowell? I would entertain the thought of having Mazzone back as pitching coach. The players are not hitting and haven’t in the last couple of years….do we need a new hitting coach, I think so. If Terry cannot get the players to listen to him, then that is a leadership problem and you need someone in that position where players will listen and learn how to hit the ball. Can this team make it into the post season, I don’t seeing it happen…they have no heart.

Comment about Chipper….I went to a Power Lunch last August and guess who showed up over 40 minutes late for the event…Chipper. I think if you know that you are scheduled to make an appearance on the behalf of the Braves that you would be on time. The excuse of “due to traffic” he was late was lame. The fans/paying customers had to allow time for traffic and we arrived on time why couldn’t you Chipper. When the event was over there was a retired couple at my table there who wanted to talk to him and started yelling his name to come over…do you think he did…no…he walked by the table totally ignoring them.

Smoltz/Chipper is irrelevant. On the field is what the fans should care about. The product on the field is a direct result of the economics of the Braves organization. Management has given huge contracts to a select few (Chipper, Andruw) with little to spend elsewhere (witness Chris Woodward). Let Chipper and Andruw leave, using the money saved on them to spend more wisely. Atlanta fans would then have reason to go to the games. Othewise, we are fools for holding this current team accountable, because the limitations are obvious.

I have noticed through the years how my day can be consumed by a negative remark or a misunderstanding. The rest of the day can be full or really neat stuff, but something bad happens and I obsess about it.

I am not alone in this. This negative situation has generated a lot of reactions.

When I first Smoltz’s remarks it sounded to me like he was saying the team has to play better, that it cannot rely on one player.

I also understand that Chipper J saw the comment as a slight against him.

It appears that the incident has been dealt with.

The issue now is whether or not the team can start playing as a team again and reclaim a winning attitude.

We were all celebrating at the beginning of the season. Suddenly, the team is in trouble and needs to refind itself. I have yet to find that beating up on people makes them better people or athletes. Of course cheering for them may not either.

The team knows how to win. Our frustration as fans is knowing that they know how to win, but aren’t. The players and coach’s frustration is knowing that they know to win, but aren’t.

An important issue is, can a team really decide to win, or is it a matter of fate. Perhaps a little of both?

If you missed the JS interview during the game last night, he basically said it all “we are an $80-$90 million team and it’s going to be hard to pay Andruw the salary he will demand and still put our best 25 on the roster”.

That’s the botton line— Andruw is a gonner unless he decides to stay and not pursue the money. But the way his season is going, his value and Scott Boras wallet is diminishing every day.

I’m a Chipper fan. If I remember correctly, the AJC ran a pole at the start of the year about Chipper and the DL. The guy has played a ton and played well at a physically demanding position and guess what? When you turn 96 (or 37?), the body breaks down. Chipper’s physical issues should not be a surprise. Expecting him to hold up an entire year - that would be the big surprise. In fact, Smoltzie (whom I am also a fan of) is the freak of nature.

Chipper is no longer superman EVERY day. With few picking up the slack at the plate, the Braves are .500 at best.

But everyone else in the East has issues - so GO BRAVES!

S Mauney Regarding your comment about Chipper and the Power Lunch. I’ve had the opportunity to attend a few of those myself, (back when they were nice and held at Maggiano’s). Chipper was one of the guests on this particular day and not only was he there on-time, but he had driven there straight from the hospital where his wife had just delivered their son the day before. Seems to me that day would have been a good day to bail on a PR event, but he didn’t. Instead he was there, hamming it up with some kids. John Thomson on the other hand, never showed at all.

Point being, you can dog Chipper all you want, but he’s not a guy who avoids fans and PR events just for the sake of it. I firmly believe that Chipper is well aware of his role on the team and the responsibility which it carries to the fans, but he’s also a human being, just like you and I.

You were disappointed and I understand that, in fact you may have gone only to see Chipper, I don’t know, but I highly doubt he intentionally blew off the event.

Perhaps Jones would not have his dignity offended if he gave back half of his salary for non performance. It isn’t Jones or Smoltz, it is most of the team who play very lackadaisacal.
Andrew should go to a Rookike league and learn what a bat is and whnat it is for. Most of the braves have no idea where the strike zone is! Andrfew is a great ballhawk but he screws himself into the ground when he swings.

I think it was very bad that smoltz and chipper went at it the way they did, the braves are a young team that has been struggling so seeing the leaders of the team go at it is not going to help but I still beleive that we can catch the mets and the phillies and win this decision but to do that the braves have got to make the key trades to better the team and they have got to make them fast

Let’s dog on Chipper shall we? He’s hitting .320 and leads the team in Home Runs even though he has been hurt most of the year. He’s been a winner since the day he put on his first Little League jersey. Chipper is NOT the problem with this team. Lack of consistent starting pitching, poor approaches at the plate by most of the hitters, and a bench that is laughable. Trade McCann. (that’s right, I said it) He is overweight, has no arm and is gun shy blocking the plate. Put Salty there and package McCann with Escobar and get us a #2 starter…

By braves fan

June 25, 2007 3:17 PM | Link to this

Smoltz has a point. Has he missed a start? Of course. But he’s way more of a suck-it-up-and-go player than Chipper. Smoltz has pulled hamstrings and had to leave a game, but strapped it on 5 days later and pitched like a warrior. He also pitched thru some serious elbow problems back before he was a closer, using sidearm deliveries and knuckleballs to get guys out. And he still got em out. I respect Chipper Jones as a ball player, but I think given his record of missing games the last three years, one John Smoltz has all the right in the world to call him (or any other players out he so chooses) for not gutting it out. And the proof is in the results. Everytime Chipper comes back from his little ailments, he hits, and hits well. Saturday was a prime example. One night he’s too hurt to play. The next night (after being called out) he’s not only well enough to play, but to hit a homerun? It didn’t help them win, but if compared to the games adjacent to it where the Braves have scored nada, it becomes huge to have Chipper in the lineup. I think Chipper should take this as a wake up call to tough it out, cause he’s that good a hitter, even when hurt.

I think it’s time to make a move. We need starting help bad and somebody needs to start hitting.

How’s Terry Pendleton working out as the hitting coach?

By Dirty Sanchez

June 25, 2007 3:23 PM | Link to this

the issue is actually quite simple…someone hit on it earlier - Hampton. You guys are ripping CJ for not playing hurt? What about MH & his 2 yr shoulder problems? Obviously he can’t play hurt, but is it too much to ask that he rehab better in the off-season & strenghten his arm? This guy is single-handedly (pun INTENDED) killing this team w/his $15 worth of nothing. Great ROI on that arm. So..how do you fix thid problem? Again - not as hard as you might think…sorry Drew. There are a small # of teams (NYY, Bos, Angels, ChiSox, Dodgers) that can take on a contract like that if other things fall into play. It seems we have a few ways to jettison Hampton: 1) package him w/either Salty or McCann to Boston (Varitek is 35 & on the way down) in excange for Jon Lester & Mike Lowell. Then we put CJ at 1st the rest of the yr, & w/the $ we save by dropping MH, we can sign a real 1st b’man for 08. OR…option #2) send Andruw, MH & a minor league arm to the White Sox for Buerhle & MacDougal.

3) - this is a stretch, but a man can dream. Send MH, Salty & James to Tampa for Carl Crawford & Scott Kazmir. We’d probably have to eat some of Hampton’s contract in this scenario, but at least his worthless a* is gone, leaving us w/options and $.

Yes - losing Salty would hurt, but to get something good, you have to give something good. Putting Salty at 3rd is a great idea, but no one will take CJ now, w/his salary & injuries.
Just do something - even if it’s a poor decision in the end. Watching these guys go from 24-12 to 38-38 is gut wrenching.

Why not establish Harris in CF and move Andruw to left. Maybe that will wake Andruw up. Braves need to trade Thorman and acquire Texeira. Then find that missing #3 starter. That will take pressure off Davies and James who are very young.

I think that if the braves need to do some trading quickly to even have a decent year, they need to get proven players not hurt ones or young ones with no majior league experience.we need to get rid of all the dead weight and get some players who can play, bunt, run, hit and throw. wer seem to be without any of these necessary qualities. trade ajones, cjones, send thorman back to aaa for experience. the players need to be made aware that if they can not perform they can not play. start moving players and maybe they will get the message. go braves

I think the most interesting thing that came out of Chipper Vs Smoltz cat fight in that one media outlet reported that the kiss and make up meeting had a 4th person present. Supposedly TP was there too. Does that confirm he’s being groomed to be the next Braves manager? He pulled out of the Washington job race after getting valuable interview experience.

If TP (Fluffy) ever replaces Cox will he demand more from his players like Frenchy, McCann and Thorman? He won’t have to worry about Fat Head Jones as he will be long gone as some dumb team will pay him $20 mill per.

* Brian* You are dead on. Salty is a much better catcher then McCann in every aspect. Did you see Salty go to the mound to settle James last night? It didn;t work because everyone but Bobby knows James in a 5 inning pitcher. But the point is Salty catches like a vet. McCann catches like a rookie.

By sam

McCann will have a great career as our 1st baseman..of course he needs to drop 15 lbs. With the contract he just signed, not sure anyone will take him in a trade. Trading Salty anywhere would be a huge mistake, that dude is gonna be a stud. Of course, unless we get our pitching fixed…we may be looking at some lean years. I thought this is what last off season was all about? It seems injuries have put us back to the drawing board…

By Dirty Sanchez

June 25, 2007 4:23 PM | Link to this

to Sam: you are correct - only a drunken 3rd grader would consider Hampton in a trade BY HIMSELF…but if Salty & James (and hell maybe Prado too) were part of the deal it would tip the scales. It’s like when scumbag politicians put bulls%*t pork additions onto the end of legit legislature since they’d never pass on their own. Ask Max Cleland about that. The point is that teams know they have to take MH too if they’re going to pry away our stud catcher. Good w/the bad kind of thing. Even if we get less than we should, the bottom line is eased w/out MH’s deadweight keeping John S. from puling the trigger. It would easily give us the $ to take on Buerhle & probably another arm for the pen, or a 1st baseman.

What the Braves need is FIRE! In 14 years they have never had it. They had it in 91. David Justice gave them some in the last game of the 95 series and helped them win it and they have not had it since. That’s why the fans have left. They have no guts. They were totally afraid of interleague play (Chipper said so) and it showed in every game they played. I think Bobby Cox is an excellent player manager but he doesn’t allow emotions to play a part. They should have plunked someone in the 3rd game they didn’t score, had a bench clearing brawl and gotten it out of their system.
