There’s no replacing Larry Munson

Mark Bradley

The question of the day — ‘Who’ll be the next Munson?’ — is fun to ponder but utterly off-point. There’ll be no next Munson because no radio announcer will ever again mean to any audience what Larry Munson has meant to Georgia.

Munson is essentially the last of his kind. He became the voice of a team at a time when radio was the primary link to that team. Today, with almost every game available on live TV, radio has been rendered a curio. Yes, Georgia fans are famous for turning down the TV sound and listening to ol’ Larry, but will they do the same when ol’ Larry isn’t around to growl and fret and break his chair on-air?

Look around. Wherever a beloved radio voice of long standing has stepped down, the replacement voice has had a muted impact. Bob Kesling does a nice job at Tennessee, but Kesling isn’t John Ward. Ralph Hacker became an object of scorn when he took Cawood Ledford’s seat at Kentucky, and Tom Leach, who has since succeeded Hacker, is a pro who knows his stuff. But Leach isn’t Ledford. Nobody could be. The medium and the marketplace have simply changed too much.

Munson didn’t just become the voice of the Bulldogs. He became the eyes of Bulldog Nation. The Rex Robinson game in Lexington — October 1978, Munson hollering, “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!” — wasn’t on live TV. The epic Herschel Game in Knoxville wasn’t on live TV. The Auburn game of 1982 — “Look at the sugar falling from the sky!” — wasn’t on live TV. If you wanted to know how the Dawgs were doing, you couldn’t rely on the cathode-ray tube. You had to listen to Larry.

Munson came along at a time when radio men weren’t just announcers but storytellers. Today we can flip on the TV and see, in glorious high-def, whether or not it’s raining on the Bulldogs in Jacksonville or whether or not Auburn is acting like she wants to score between the hedges. We can follow the stats with GameTracker. We don’t have to rely on one voice, even a great and distinctive voice.

The best Munson’s eventual successor — and I’d love to see Jeff Dantzler, who’s smart and funny and who has a great grasp of Georgia and its history, get a shot — can hope is that he’ll be judged in the context of the world as it is and not the world we remember. If the young Larry Munson were coming along today, he couldn’t possibly become the Larry Munson we came to know and love. This is 2007, not 1966. And radio, sad to say, belongs to yesteryear.

Good article MB. I have always enjoyed your columns as well as my Granfather who has been reading you for years.

Larry will never be replaced but when he does, I think, like you say, will be interesting to see if anyone will listen. I think a lot of people will tune in just to see what it’s like without Munson and to see if it’s worth listening for future games. Ratings will probably drop but I don’t think substantially.

What do you think?

I don’t want to hear any more of this talk about Chuck Dowdle or Bill Hartman [ ahem ] “replacing” Larry Munson.

Chuck Dowdle is a slack-jawed idiot. Bill Hartman is not quite as smart and articulate as MR. Dowdle.

I hear Don Imus and Rosie O’Doughnut are looking for work?

Ray Goof isn’t half-bad on a microphone.

Buck Belue would be great. Has anyone considered, at least for a short-term basis and after his recovery, Vince Dooley?

why can’t the current hoops announcers do it? howard and danzler. those guys are good and like MB says know UGA. they’re passionate when they call games and are fun to listen to. they should at least get the first shot. buck belue, while entertaining on radio is a boob when it comes to calling a game. boooring. we need guys with life. maybe belue could be the next lauren smith.

I am a die hard Tech fan and I am totally going to miss Larry. It reminds me of when Johnny Carson stepped down from the Tonight show. I just assumed Larry would be calling games forty years from now even though that is ridiculous. It is the end of an era and I feel old. Don’t ask Ray Goff to take over for two GA legends in a row.

I wonder if since Skip is being forced out of the Braves both if Chip Caray would want the job? He’s a UGA alum, and if you get him out of the booth with Joe Simpson he’s actually pretty good.

I agree on giving Howard and Dantzler the job. Being a lot of basketball games aren’t televised, I’ve had a chance to listen to them quite a bit. I think they are passionate, knowledgable, and work well together. They’re the logical choice.

Munson will be missed, but as Bradley points out, listening to games on the radio is mostly a thing of the past. I can’t remember the last time I’ve listened to Munson live. Has to have been close to 10 years. I love hearing his highlights, but that’s all I hear at this point.

Great article Mark,

Us old enough to remember pre cable TV know that all we had was Munson painting the scene for the away games that weren’t on TV.

Nice article, Mark. You’re right - times are different and there will never be someone like Munson at any school. He is truly one of the last of his kind.

However, I do have to disagree with you on one point. I can’t see Jeff Dantzler getting the reins. He may know Georgia history as well as anyone outside of Dan McGill but, personally, I’d rather not have a play-by-play man asking Loran what color underwear he thinks the Georgettes are wearing.

As far as a successor, Scott Howard, in my mind, is the only choice. 1) He deserves it, 2) I think he does a fantastic job with the b-ball team and 3) He knows his stuff. He’s learned from the best for almost 15 years.

I wish Larry could do this forever but we all know that can’t happen. Selfishly, I hope we can get one more year with him. Whenever he does decide to leave he will be sorely, sorely missed.

Here in Panama City we still listen to the games on the radio and there is no doubt that larry will be missed. I also listened to the games on AFRTS while in the military and ALWAYS enjoyed Larry, he’s the best and there will never be another, I knew this day would come and am sad for it….

Much like rock n’ roll has become the soundtrack to our lives over the past 60 years, the voice of Larry Munson has been the backdrop for the greatest times in many a Dawg’s life. For me, the famous plays would not have meant as much without the overlay of Munson’s call. He will never be replaced…His voice captured the thrill of the Georgia people at its highest point when Georgia beat Auburn in 1982, to crown the greatest era of Georgia football up until that time. Larry made it what it was.

Alabama hired a great play by play guy when Ray Perkins took over. I think his name was Paul Kennedy. he did a great job but was not red neck enough for the Bama crowd. he is still around doing a lot of TV. He would be good for the Dogs if Scott Howard doesn’t get the call. r

I think Scott Howard & Jeff Dantzler deserve a shot if they do good on the road games then were set, end of the story. If not then we’ll know we need to look around. I also think it’s time for Lauren to retire as well & I think either Buck Blue or Kevin Butler would be a good fits to replace him. Honndo could do that role as well but keep him out of the booth.

However if the trial run fails then we need look around. Here’s my rundown of some of the options mentioned & some I thought off:

Wes Durham -I’ve always said if you want a good quality announcer to replace Larry, Wes would be good but with the politics involved he’s not coming to UGA, he’ll end up replacing his dad an UNC.
Brad Nessler - The money wouldn’t be right but he might take less to be home more often. Ron Franklin – Great on ESPN & would love to have him but money would be the issue again. Chip Carrey - I’d love to have him but would he be willing to leave the braves &\or could he do them until football started? If WSB still had the Braves then yes, but how it stands now I don’t think so. Verne Lundquist – CBS should replace him so why would we want him, plus he’s retirement age as well, if were going to move on it needs to be with someone that’s can be here a few years Dave Neal - Would be a good choice but I think he likes doing the SEC games to much & wouldn’t want to be tied to one school. Plus he could move up to CBS or ESPN eventually which is what I think he’s aiming for. Bob Neal – would be a good interim gap filler in for then next 5 to 10 years. Matt Stewart, Jeff Hullinger, Bill Hartman or Chuck Dowdel, Randy Waterman – Let’s be serious! NO WAY, any of these guys need to be anywhere near the UGA announce booth. Matt needs to go from the CSS broadcast as it is. John Kenncade & Buck Blue – 680 is pushing this on there morning show, Buck might be good as color or sideline guy but he doesn’t need to bring John with him. Kenncade is good at attacking to cover up his faults or to stir up emotions we don’t need his kind associated with UGA not even to replace Matt Stewart on CSS. Maybe there’s an announcer out there somewhere at another school like Larry & Wes were at Vandy that would be a good fit. There’s not going to be another Larry so if the road game trial team fails miserably then let’s just find a great play by play guy that can’t paint the picture.

I can’t imagine anyone working in network TV — and ESPN certainly qualifies as network now — would leave to do local radio. That’s just the way of the modern world: TV is the big ticket. Dantzler?!?!?!? Are you out of your frickin’ mind? Dantzler comes off on the radio as one of those cocky know it alls who has to inject a “hey….look what I know and you dont” moment every ten seconds. If he announced that huge click sound you’d hear are all the radios in the SE turning off.

Howard’s my choice and put Williamson in the booth with him. If you really need dantzler, put him on the field where we only have to hear him every 20 minutes or so, ala Loren.

Who knows, maybe there’s a future Munson over at the Journalism school. Get a student to try out.

The quicker Munson exits, the better. UGA fans will be disappointed to know that Munson is a miserable man and is more condescending off the air than any announcer previously mentioned is on it. And while he may be a part of UGA lore, he’s a terrible announcer. Listening to him is like listening to a drunken fanatical supporter try to describe what’s happening on the field. I’m sorry but when Butler kicks a 60-yard field goal to beat Clemson on the last play of the game, “Oh, my God! Oh, my God! Oh, my, God!” followed by silence is not a descriptive call. I HATE being forced to listen to him—and I’ve been following the Dawgs for more than 20 years. His style is as ancient as the invention of radio itself! Time to move on!

Good radio broadcasting is about painting a picture, not about telling us how nervous you are. If you take off your red and black bias glasses for just two seconds, you’d realize how horrible Munson has gotten over the past few years (Part of that has to do with the fact that he’s got a horrible drinking problem that is the reason for his health issues).

And just to set the record straight, I was leaving a UGA/S.Car game in 1999 and me and my buddy noticed a huge, hulking man walking as fast as he could with his head down, trying not to be noticed. My friend turned to me and said, ” OMG it’s Munson. How’d he get out of the press box so quick? He was obviously in much better shape then. We decided not to say anything b/c he was definitley trying to get out of there as quick as he could. But when we got down the hill almost to where his car was parked, he turned and said “Strange game wasn’t it? I kept. We talked as we kept walking and then when we turned to cross the street I said ” It was a pleasure Mr. Munson, and he just said have a good night you guys. He knew that it was a thrill for 2 guys who had just gratuated to talk with him, even for just a few minutes. And he couldn’t have been nicer. So J Dawg not only do you have no CLASS, you are a liar.

The point of all this is that Damon and UGA does not need to rush on a permanent sud for Larry. There will be no replacement. Just a new guy. Some of us remember Larry’s predecessor Ed T. We all, especially the AJC, seem ready to start shoveling dirt in a grave that doesn’t have a body. Relax. This was going to happen. I personally would like to see Larry do 2007 home and away so we can send him out with a championship. I got to believe that somehow King Adams can justify flying Larry to away games in UGA’s plane. He’s lucky his a** is still associated with UGA after Dooley had him removed for the pantie comment. Scott is the ONLY choice here…leave Danzler at the bar soaking in his misery.

Scott Howard. He has paid his dues and I like his voice and commentary. He is also knowledgble and a DAWG.

Holy crap - who cares. Listening to Munson call a game is like listening to Kenny G, it is just awful. Have Buck and Kincade call the games - they would be entertating for all the puppies out there. Then again, I really do not care who calls the games for the pups from Athens….HOOK “EM!!!!

Danzler? Talks way too much. Steps on toes. Talks thru his nose. Gets stuck in a repetitive track..”righty vrs. righty”. I love UGA just as much as he does, but that doesn’t qualify either one of us for this job. Can you picture Tech with Wes Durham and UGA with Danzler? WOW!

You write for a newspaper and describe radio as yesteryear? What Larry has brought for all these years is his passion and his integrity. We can learn to love another voice and another point of view if the voice is passionate, accurate, and vivid. As for Larry. Thanks for coming into our homes and cars and representing our beloved University for forty years. Live well your remaining years. The Bulldog nation will love you always.

It’s got to be Scott Howard. Jeff Dantzler is just too full of **it. I need my radio voice of the Dogs to have some humility and Dantzler has none. He knows that he knows more than you and he knows his opinion is the right and only valid one. Scott Howard is the one. I don’t even want Dantzler as the color guy.

Thanks to Larry for all the great memories. I’m just glad my 2 sons have also had the privilege of hearing him do the Georgia games. There’s not too many “celebrities” worth taking note of these days and in this state, he’s certainly a celeb; but he’s much more than that. Like someone said, he’s provided so much backdrop for so many lasting and wonderful memories. Next to being in Sanford Stadium, it’s a thrill to walk down East Beach on SSI and hear one radio right after another one blaring Georgia Football and of course hearing those familiar voices (especially Larry and Loran). As for Larry and co. being so antiquated, it’s funny that when UT’s John Ward retired, they got the new guys and also added a third man on the sidelines (a former Vol QB named Jeff Francis). Before that there were only 2 buys in the booth. Wonder where they got the idea of the 3rd man down on the field??

No, radio is not what it used to be, but hearing Larry all these years and having him on OUR side has been a real joy. Long before cable and HDTV, Larry could paint the picture and make it almost as good as being there…

Jeff Dantzler does not need to be a part of the broadcast crew. He is condescending and is the twin of Kinkade. He is really abrasive on any show especially when he use to be on the fifth quarter during Donnan and Goffs era as coaches. He was never supportive then except to what he had known before their time.

Yeah, Keith Jackson would be great … “Well, it’s a beautiful day between the hedges here in Clemson … err, Atlanta … I mean, Athens. The Bulldogs are fired up and ready to play for Jim Donnan today … err, Mark Richt.” He’s just plain senile now … just like Larry! … Get us someone who can actually describe what’s going on with accuracy. Larry’s color man is more of an interpreter and on-air editor than anything else due to the man’s incompetence at calling a game!

Roswell Ed- JF is a Tech alum. No way he would call games for UGA.

Anyway, big tip of the hat from this Jacket to Larry. He’s the real deal.

I like Wes Durham, but he’s no Al Ciraldo. And whoever replaces Munson won’t come close.

As an Irish fan since birth, I can only rue the day that Larry retires. I haven’t listened to him except when ND isn’t on, but I love his style, dedication, and obvious love of his “Dawgs”.

I’d give my right arm for him to say Go-o-o Irish!! just once on the air. I’d also love it if we had someone like him for our announcer.

So here is the joke: SI rates UGA’s schedule the 14th most difficult in the nation of 121 teams. It also rates Tech’s schedule 9th hardest of 12 ACC teams. So which does the AJC choose to pick on? Yea Chip, the AJC is biased and it sucks too.

I realize I’ve probably doomed Dantzler’s chances by saying I like him, but I think he’d bring a different sort of passion — frenetic energy, as opposed to Munson’s energetic fretting — to the broadcasts. And radio today is all about energy. Indeed, that’s what producers say during commercial breaks, “Keep the energy up!” It’s why I’d have never made it in radio: I have no energy whatsoever.

Dantzler is without a doubt the most knowledgable and has done an amazing job at the basketball and baseball. While I think Scott Howard also does a great job, I personally would rather hear Dantzler. I also never realized that people could hate a guy so much because he is a lot smarter than they are. When it comes to UGA athletics, I hate to break it to the haters, he pretty much doea know everything.

A state of GA sports fan, not necessarily a UGA fan. This is just like Paris Hilton. You either hate her or love her, but she brings in all the attention, therefore all the money. Obviously there is no one who brings more attn, has more sports knoledge, and is better known. It should be win, place, and show for JD!

As a big Alabama fan, I thought one of the few things Ray Perkins did right was bring in Paul Kennedy to do the football play by play and he was excellent. However, as jim@pinemountain noted, Paul did not fit in with the good ole boy crowd at Bama and moved to the Sunshine TV Network in 1988 where he still does a great job.

Tennessee fans have experienced a huge dropoff from John Ward to Bob Kesling. Ward not only had a great voice, but he spoke at a perfect pace which made his play by play descriptions very easy to understand and follow. Ward was one of the few play by play guys that was outstanding in both football and basketball, although I thought he was slightly better in basketball.

Cawood Ledford was obviously legendary in the quality of his basketball play by play work, but I think Tom Leach is really good. I think he is easily the best of the new breed that have replaced some of the legendary play by play voices in the SEC.

John Ferguson of LSU was Cawood’s counterpart, as far as SEC football play by play is concerned. His voice was classic and it carried across the entire country on Saturday nights on WWL in New Orleans. John also excelled in TV and along with Joe Dean formed a legendary broadcasting team for over 20 years on the SEC TV basketball game of the week.

As far Munson is concerned, the guy is absolutely irreplaceable. For my money, he and Ferguson are the best college football radio play by play guys ever. Although he openly pulled for the Dawgs, Larry’s obvious knowledge of the game and his ability to describe it made his being a “homer” a moot point with me.

Also, Larry is beloved by Georgia fans for not being afraid to tell it like it is. If the Dawgs look great, he will say so, if they’re flat, he will say so, and if they are stinking up the stadium, he will say so.

If I was a Georgia fan, I would be breathing a sigh of relief because having Munson doing only home games for possibly two or three more seasons is a thousand times better than having no Munson at all.

Georgia fans should be eternally greatful for having one of the all time broadcasting legends describing their football fortunes for over 40 years. Go as long as you can, Larry.

This is for Firemedic Vince Dooley had nothing to do with Jeff Dantzler’s afternoon radio show. Did you think Dooley owned that station? Also, in a world of loud and rowdy shock-jocks, that was a fairly tame comment. Oh yeah, since the radio biz is about money, the station had to rehire Dantzler because their ads rates dropped 75% without him. I do not know who would be better between Dantzler and Scott Howard, but I am glad that you will have nothing to do with the decision.

All I know is that I better hear, “LARRY”, “MUNSON”, instead of “GEORGIA”, “BULLDOGS”, from the fans at least a couple of times during the games. Let’s send Larry out the way we should. Thanks Larry for all the years.

I can’t go to a Georgia game without my radio to listen to Larry. It will not be the same without him calling the games. Listening to him for all these years has been great. Whoever follows him will never be able to fill his shoes. He is as much Georgia football as Herschel and Vince. You cannot replace a legend!

I think Georgia/WSB ought to give David Steele a look. He graduated from Georgia around ‘74 or ‘75, worked local stuff a few years, then became FLorida’s play-by-play man. Not sure where it went from there, but I last saw him on JP/Lincoln or whatever they call themselves these days. Terrific voice; smooth delivery - a real pro.

Dantzler? Really? That’s just what we need. The Jeff Dantzler show, featuring the Georgia Bulldog football team. The next guy should at least get that the broadcast is about the game and the team and not about who the announcer drank with or talked to or what he was doing in 1980 when Herschel did something. The Bulldawg Nation deserves better than that.

I’ve listened to Larry everygame for the past 20 years (at the game or not). I listen to JD everyday on the Ref in Athens and also love Scott Howard. I think JD and Scott should share the duties with Scott taking the lead (just like the BB games). God knows I will shed a tear or two the first game I don’t here uncle Larry say: “get the picture”. Go Dawgs and God bless Larry!

Scott Howard will be perfect for the job. He does an excellent performance already with football and basketball.

Did I mention that Carter Strickland should not be allowed to comment on the Dawgs? His vote makes it impossible to vote for Scott without trashing Larry! Come on AJC, that’s why so many of us get so fed up with your media tricks.

Mark Bradley, et al…

Play-by-play radio. Remember when the World Series was played during the day and one could pick it up via the radio..? It was great for business ‘cause people didn’t call in sick the next day after staying up late to watch. I semi recall Munson doing the Vandy games from my younger days, loving life in Smashville. That must been brutal for him. I’m happy for the man that he found a home with a good program for all these years. He damn well EARNED it…

I am a long time UGA Dawgs fan, My first experience in Sanford Stadium was Band Day, 1968 for Georgia-Houston. 10-10. Remember the late 4th quarter drive for the tying field goal? Vintage Larry Munson. I have listened to him every time possible and in every way imaginable. My younger brother used to let me and my older brother call back in the 70’s when we were living in California. What a treat! Since then, I have listened from all over the country. My Dad and brothers have enjoyed it many times, especially in South Georgia for Thanksgiving. We are some of the many fans that listen to Larry Munson instead of the TV announcers. Next week, I relocate to Atlanta from Boston, MA. I am saddened to hear he may not be calling the away games. Scott, Hondo, Loran, Dick and Coach McGill have certainly played huge roles. And speaking of coaches, thank you Coach Vince Dooley! Also, Joel Eaves for hiring you. Many SEC teams have had good announcers. Countless listeners will forever appreciate the best, Larry Munson!
