“Pacman” ablaze in controversy

Jeff Schultz

THE TUESDAY COUNTDOWN…

10: So I’m curious. If you’re Adam “Pacman” Jones and you’ve just released a statement that says, “I met with [Roger Goodell] to tell him about the steps I have taken to change my life since being suspended by the NFL,” where exactly does being wanted for questioning in a shooting at an Atlanta strip club at 4:15 a.m. fit in?

9: Michael Huyghue, Jones’ agent, claimed last week his client would be spending the off-season working out and taking online courses from West Virginia. So I guess we’re to assume that Club Blaze on Moreland Avenue actually is a 24-hour Internet cafe. With a topless support staff. And laptop dances.

8: Maybe Michael Vick just doesn’t like camp.

7: Would the last Georgia Tech player who leaves the building please turn out the season?

6: Paul Hewitt will tell you that the Jackets will be just fine without Javaris Crittenton and Thaddeus Young (neither of whom, by the way, are ready for the NBA). But losing the team’s two leading scorers can’t exactly be termed a step forward. Especially when they’re only freshmen. Even in this one-and-done era, Hewitt never could have anticipated he would lose both.

5: Delta has renamed several of its 757s the “Hank Aaron 755.” There also were plans to rename an MD-88 in honor of Barry Bonds. But the plane mysteriously morphed into a space shuttle in the off-season and the head couldn’t fit into the hangar.

4: Just wondering how Leo Mazzone likes the view now in Baltimore. The Orioles fired his buddy, manager Sam Perlozzo. Mazzone worked for Bobby Cox for 15 seasons. He worked for Perlozzo for 20 months.

3: Michael Vick has canceled an appearance in his kitchen later today because of “scheduling” conflicts.

2: Kobe Bryant asked to be traded. Then he recanted. Now he has asked to be traded again. Is there any way that clause in Billy Donovan’s contract banning him from the NBA for five years can be imposed on this guy?

1: Pacman’s Internet study group will meet tonight in Sugarloaf, at Lisa Ann Taylor’s house.

I have emailed the office of Titans and the NFL to BAN this man. I am sick of hearing about him, he MUST GO. He is a disgrace to every fan of the NFL. I believe in 2nd and sometimes 3rd chances. I believe in giving people a break when they do not deserve one. I want guys like Mike Vick overcome his trials and tribulations but Adam Jones has to go, I am begging the NFL to BAN this man. He do not get it, he do not care and I am sure he is reading all this laughing. BAN THIS MAN MR. Commissioner, if you are reading this blog, get rid of him today, do not wait. The NFL is the best league we have and news about him screws it up for guys who really deserve 2nd and 3rd chances not 11 chances……

The odds of Pacman cleaning up his act after a year off are about like me going to the moon, sure I can do it, but I won’t. This guy is on the fast track to crash and burn, five arrest in one year, give me a break. Not just a criminal, but a really, really dumb criminal. Vick is toast, pop him out of the toaster and get on with it, they found a heap of mess up on his compound, just wait for the grand jury, Vick is toast. Hank Aaron is today and will be the Homerun King even when Bonds breaks his record, in our hearts it will be Hank. Kobe wanted some press because LeBron was making 48 points in the play off games, he is just jealous.

Adam Jones is just lowlife scum. I dont even care if he had nothing to do with the shooting besides knowing the guy. Lowlifes and hoods shoot each other over arguments. WTF? They just deserve to die if that is how they settle arguments. NFL, please just get rid of him. And ATLANTA if you see him around, get away. He should be shunned by the community.

I guess when I grew up it was a honor to play professional sports. These guys could not make in the 9 to 5 world and they are doing their best to get there.

When you become a millionaire, it may be time to leave your ghetto friends behind. The likelyhood of you pulling them into your checkbook-zone is not very good. These guys fight so hard to get away from all this trouble and then just take it with them when they move up. I’m a big one for keeping friends for a ifetime, but you have to recognize which ones are with you and which ones will hold you back.If they say “which gun do you want to carry tonight” leave them home. If they say “X or reefer tonight”, same thing! If they say, “let’s stab that guy for looking at you”, go see a movie with a new friend!

Pacman is becoming like Daryl Strawberry. He is given too many chances and he continues to disappoint. Anyone that thought the Commissioner was unfair for giving him a whole season off and others half a season, owe the Commish an apology. He obviously saw something, in his face to face with Adam, that let him know this dude would probably continue doing stupid stuff. Pacman needs to hire someone to protect him from himself.

Famuan You are absolutely correct. The AJC deliberately allows their editors to place these types of blogs just to receive the racist feedback. Notice that almost every person Shultz has named is African American. Pacman Jones, Mike Vick, Kobe Bryant, Barry Bonds. The paper deliberatley does this all the time.

Everyone knew Pacman had issues but because of his God-given athleticism, it was largely ignored, while many kept their fingers crossed that he didn’t screw up on their dime. Where are the football develops character aficionados? It’s BS!! As long as Pacman (and the next man) hustles to the ball, scores touchdowns, intercepts, tackles, and pads pockets, no one is going to give a crap. Like the poster said earlier, people gain a false sense of personal worth via their affiliation with athletes. Yes, the guy is compensated nicely but most don’t probably have a clue how many pockets he has padded. Sadly, the only people that have genuinely cared for him are his (original) friends and it’s obvious that most of them are f*ck-ups. Therefore, it’s a no-win situation but my main point is that the individuals pointing the finger either (a) benefitted or (b) contributed to the larger than life images these athletes have.

By Jeff Schultz

June 19, 2007 2:03 PM | Link to this

You know what’s really pathetic? It’s the people in the world who want to make every issue about race. It’s the people who for seven years ignore the fact that I wrote 99.9 percent positive things about Michael Vick but, now that things have turned, it must be because I or anybody else at the AJC am a racist, or that we wake up in the morning and decide, “How can I get Michael Vick today.” It’s these little people that I try to avoid in my life because they clearly have no life themselves. I’m comforted by the fact that the vast majority of readers recognize that the people who turn every issue race try to make up for their general lack of numbers with loud, ugly blogs. As for this “obsession” with Michael Vick you speak of — MV is news, always has been, always will be. So the fact that he has canceled his second appearance at a youth camp — yes, that’s news. When everything about Michael Vick was fun and excitement and sweetness and light, we at the AJC didn’t hear even a peep of a complaint. So why are things different now? This isn’t about race, folks. This is about a star athlete who has run into problems. And for anybody who wants to continue to make it about race, I feel sorry for you. JS

Chick hit the nail on the head — we’re taking athletes out of the ‘hood, with a limited and undeveloped set of life-skills that would speak poorly of even most middle-class 3rd graders (no conflict-solving skills, no communication skills, no money management skills, no interpersonal skills, virtually no education, no father-influence to draw on, the list goes on). We’re then giving them millions of dollars, and presuming that NOW they should act like other responsible people of means. However, even with the money, the only people they feel comfortable hanging around with are their former/fellow homeys, who likewise have none of (and probably fewer of) those same life-skills (except perhaps the skill of leaching financially off the newly-rich athlete). And now we are shocked … SHOCKED … when they just can’t seem to act like prudent, responsible, socially-acceptable human beings? Giving people with such limited life-skills millions of dollars is like giving a 3rd grader a loaded weapon, and wondering why someone got shot.

And YES, I’m including MV in this rant — no, I don’t think he’s anywhere near as “lost” as Jones, but he’s still out of his element, and in all this WAY over his head. Somehow, I guess, the applicable coaching staffs HAVE to step into these messes and turn these guys around, though for Jones … and maybe, I’m afraid, for Vick … it’s looking a bit late for that.

Speaking of which, I loved the recent article where Reeves essentially talked about how he baby-sat MV and made sure he stayed away from the wrong element. Uh … even granting you that I DON”T think MV is fundamentally a bad person, still, is THAT the kind of person you want (a) as the leader of your team, and (b) the face of your franchise?

I kind of feel bad for Vick…he’s got this thing hanging over his head now, so it probably isn’t a good idea for him to be making public appearances until it’s over and done with. On the flipside, every time he misses a public appearance, it’s another chance for the press to drag his name through the mud. Your damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Tough call.

Jeff — really appreciated your comments a minute ago (and usually enjoy your columns).

Let me ‘splain that NONE of my comments before were intended to be racial — they would apply equally regardless of whether the athlete was black, hispanic, white, whatever … it’s really a “class” thing, pure and simple. When kids who grow up in environments where they learn none of the life-skills we value in this society, then we suddenly make them rich … well, again, we’re handing the toddler the loaded weapon. He may not be any MORE ornery or petulant because he he’s been handed the gun, but suddenly he has the means to cause harm on a much bigger scale, and that should NOT surprise us.

As for Barry, he is an incredibly talented, egocentric athlete. I seriously doubt that he could have racked up such numbers without the juice. That said, I also doubt that Mcguire achieved his numbers without the juice.

I don’t think that either of them belong in the Hall of Fame and their stats should be flagged in the record books.

Perhaps next time you might ask an opinion before opening your big yap.

My prediction:

Within the next year, Pacman Jones will be in another shootout, this time while throwing money around that he won Mike Vick’s house in a dog fight. The gun will eventually be traced to Tank Johnson, but not before Deltha O’Neal shows up (drunk) to drive everyone home. They stop on the way home at the Sugarloaf Madame’s house, where they’re joined by Brett Favre, who is of course supplying the Vicadin. OJ, furious at not being invited to the party, breaks in and kills them all, then is acquitted when it is learned that the Gwinnett County Police Detective in charge of the case once called Terrence Moore a racist.

Of course, I could be wrong.

Jeff Schultz,

I agree with you on the race thing. But instead of Vick not showing up for a youth camp as news, shouldn’t the story be that some poor kid’s parents would still let him/her attend a youth camp ran by Ron Mexico, I mean Mike Vick?

Sounds like it’s “GAME OVER” for Pacman. The guy is only a couple years into the league and can’t be making the mega millions like a Vick or Peyton Manning. Plus he’s paid plenty of that money back to the league and Titans due to his off field lack of discipline, and I doubt he’s pulling in the big bucks on the endorsement circuit (unless the Pink Pony is looking for a football player to sell their product). So shouldn’t he have trouble affording his “rock and roll lifestyle” (as Cake would put it) and security detail?

I’m personally waiting for Jeff Schultz to demand a trade, so I can ask the ajc to make it so.

“Limited Life skills” and “almost NO education” These are the escuses that are trown out for Pacman Jones and Mike Vick and Tank Johnson etc. Does everyone forget that these players were once College Football Players. They were not plucked out of the hood and 10 min later given millions of dollars. They spent 4 sometimes 5 YEARS at some intitute of Higher learning so that they could learn those Life Skills and get an Education. But apparently they took that opportunity and p** it away. I have no sympathy for someone who cannot learn basic life skills (like how to stay out of trouble) in 4-5 years.

By Diogenes

Ryan, that’s the problem — they DON’T learn life skills or get an education in the 4-5 years they’re at college. They major in African American Studies and Art History and Communications and gawd knows what else, while the boosters secretly slip them money, and the schools cover up for them while they’re out ho-in’ and club fightin’ and knockin’ up babymamas. They’re treated like gods on campus based on how fast they can run or how much weight they can lift, nothing more.

There are 2 failures here — (a) these kids DO p* it away, because they weren’t even raised to value what really matters, and so they could care less, and (b) the “system” through college and into the pros doesn’t MAKE them grow up or teach them how to act like respectable human beings (‘cause they have NO idea how to do that based on where they came from). Sure, there are exceptions — success stories of kids who have made themsleves into “somebody,” and that’s great. Some schools also “get it” — Richt seems to understand, for example. But schools like Miami? Uh-huh.

And I would bet a month’s salary that none of the brothers posting on this blog have EVER emailed Cynthia about her “hatin” on the “man” on practically every issue. But she does it ALL the time. Notice nobody is ‘hatin’ on Donovan McNabb, Hines Ward, and many other black athletes that stay out of trouble? Notice how Rush lost his job when he DID say something STUPID about McNabb, and blacks can say just about anything they want and not get into trouble? But that is probably just me hatin’ on the brothers.

Why do blacks always bring up the Farve card when in reality Farves’ stats were better than Mike Vicks last year. Find another horse to beat to death. Black people of Atlanta, you do no own the image of Mike Vick. With that said you can’t control what people think of him. He is a public figure subject to public opinion. Deal with it, okay. As far as the thug idiot Pac Man, some of us were raised to think that being arrested five times in one year is a bit excessive, but hey, thats how our white parents raised us. Is Vick the best ya’ll got to toss out? If so, your scraping the bottom more than a six year old boy does in his underwear. Get a new hero, one that ain’t….PRISON BOUND. Colts and Manning, that’s a winning combo.

Is it me or is every professional athlete that gets arrested BLACK?

Why are guns always involved?

Why do they attack cops?

Why do they beat-up their hoez?

Why don’t they pay child support?

Why do they constantly lie?

Like the ‘ol adage says…You can take the N**** out of the ghetto, but you will NEVER take the ghetto out of the N****.

Finally, someone is not afraid (because they would be labeled a racist for following the rules) to stand up to these pieces of s**.

Thank God for Roger Goodell!

When are you going to report on sports news not gossip?I don’t care about what these clowns do on the off season or after games, because I don’t go to clubs, strip clubs or bars,so let the police handle that.I don’t care about Vick missing a youth camp or some confrence in D.C,or his waterbottle, herpes,or dogfighting.Like I said if he is guilty put him in jail or suspend him,if not I want to hear about how he doing in mini camp, how is doing with Joe Horn,Roddy White & Jenkins. How is Dunn doing? will he be productive this year? How is Norwood looking?is he ready to make the next step this year?Whats the status with Grady Jackson?what is Brooking’s role going to be this year?Is Coleman and Abraham going to be healthy this year? How is the kicking situation this year? This is what Falcon fans want to read about in the AJC sports section! If we want to hear gossip and rumors we can watch Chris Mortenson on ESPN or watch Entertainment tonight.

Jeff - All I ask is for you to write about sports. I know, they are players. But can’t the swipes at their personal life and life choices be moved from sports to say entertainment, next to the gossip column? You could use the moment to perfect your tendency for bad jokes and corny metaphors. Really, when is it enough. What next, Paris Hilton’s love life next to the box scores? If it isn’t about the game, leave it be. AJC sports page is becoming a gossip page for men. I could care less about PacMan Jones’ personal life. He isn’t playing this year. So, tell me what exactly this has to do with sports? The bloggers are klling you on better coverage. Oh, and tell T. Moore to take a sabatical and write a piece of fiction on his fantasy Braves team. The constant harping on fantasy, what-it Brave teams is a waste of printed space. Now that is a solution! Jeff, you start a new gossip column on athlets and T. Moore can write a novel on his fantasy Braves team. The rest of us can go and find out what is really going on with our teams from blogs.

You know I am so happy that the people who have written to this blog have never ever committed the slightest infraction in their lives. If I was Adam Jones’ attorney I would not let my client speak to the Dekalb police. If they want to know what happened at the strip club or afterwards, they need to get up off of their behinds and do some police work and find out. Questioning Adam Jones is the the easy way out. Of course they knew he would cooperate when they made it public knowledge that the alleged people involved knew him. The police have acknoweledged that Adam Jones was not involved in the shooting and was not there. What does he know? I would go into the interview and say “I don’t know and I wasn’t there.

As to everyone else on this blog who cast aspersions on the character of the athletes or other individuals mentioned in the article, remember that you must stand before God and justify your life and how you lived it and what you did to your fellow man. You and I both need to be on our knees asking for forgiveness, not telling someone else that their life and upbringing is substandard and they will never amount to anything. This is the same attitude that was used for years to justify slavery and used by Hitler to justify his policy of exterminating 6 million jews. Think people.

Adam Jones lawyer has some balls to say that his client can’t catch a break. Tell that to the innocent people’s lives who he has changed for life with his presence and actions. He was a hood rat thug while he was at Westlake. Played him in football and basketball, and he’s always been a crap talking thug. He’s got mounds of talent, but that isn’t gonna help his butt when he’s behind bars. You can only give people so many chances before you realize it’s their goal in life to be a screw up. This guy has every chance possible to straighten up, let it be his athletic talent, his college academics and scholarships, or his multi-million dollar deal in the NFL. He’s had his chances to be something in this world, and he continues to throw it away. Just goes to let you know that once a loser, always a loser. I hope you get kicked out of the NFL Jones, and end up under a bridge somewhere living with all that talent you have put to waste. Think of how much the man that was eventually paralyzed by your shananagans would love to be able to walk, much less make millions at doing something you love. Go hide under a rock loser.

JOE let me give you a dose of reality from one white man to another. Denver Broncos reciever David Kircus who is white was charged with 2nd degree assault which is a class 4 felony, he broke facial bones in a 26 year old. Also here so more white new for you. Detroit Lions assistant coach Joe Cullen was arrested for driving nude and a week later for drunken driving, was sentenced Feb. 13, 2007, to two years probation and must attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings twice a week. Cullen, who coaches Detroit’s defensive line, pleaded no contest last month to disorderly conduct and guilty to impaired driving. So all of you “whites” must really be feeling dumbfounded. I could go on and on with more, but i have proven my point. White America is hardly perfect and when you weigh the faults of others, don’t put your thumbs on the scale

How can you be blessed with enough talent to make it to the NFL, and then just F—- it up?
Didn’t he read that full page add he placed in the Tennessee newspaper - especially the part about “learning lessons” and “making better choices”.

If you go to the NFL Players website - it talks about personal conduct - it includes - INCITING Violence as a violation. Telling people in the strip club - “I’ll kill everyone of y’all in here…” is up there on the inciting violent behavior - stupid a*. The icing on the cake is….”Let me go get my gun outta the car”….

Well it’s amazing how everytime white america makes racists remarks and a black person recognizes it that black people are pulling the race cards. Once again, The article is intentionally misleading. It gives you the assumption that the article is clearly about Jones, when in all actuallity it’s another outlet to further persecute Michael Vick, Kobe Bryant, and Barry Bonds. Now Mr. Shultz if your intent was not meant to be racist then I apologize to you; however, I find it difficult to understand what these other individuals have in commone with the title Pacman ablaze in controversy. And as for the rest of the racist comments on here, (mostly from white people) it’s ironic how when Vick helped take us to the playoffs there was no racist comments left on these blogs……or was it?

Pacman is a disgrace to himself and not the NFL and the self righteous people on this blog. Why must every pro athlete be a pillar of our society? There are a lot of politicians and lawyers out there who are much worse. And please, do not give me that “they should set examples for our kids” philosophy. That job belongs to the parents.

Also, Kobe Bryant’s importance to the game of basketball as compared to Billy Donovan is a no brainer. I do not ever recall paying to go a basketball game to watch a little guy with a white shirt and tie walking in front of the bench.

Seems like a lot of folks here (including Bradley) are extremely envious of black athletes who make money and have the audacity to be able to live in this society and not be subjected to racism and class bigotry. Since when do people care what happens on Moreland Avenue unless it involves the wrong doings of a celebrity? Nine of Bradley’s countdown statements refer directly or indirectly to black athletes.

Crittendon and Young will get paid despite what is said here. It is good to see these guys work the system for their benefit and not that of others. More power to them.

White people (and you know who you are) PLEASE!!! I know some black people have ignorant thoughts as well….SHUT UP and THINK!! Jeff Shultz is a LIAR..He says its news its not news. News could be updates on the recent draft selections and how they are fairing out. Or injury reports on Rod Coleman, etc. Why are we constantly hearing about Vick? Because again Jeff Shultz is a liar I hope you get fired for not working because this isn’t work, I could sit back and write about one person for months if I wanted to. You cannot call yourself a BEAT writer writing about one person. Thats flabergastic!! Vick is no where near a PAC-Man Jones. If you think so you hate him already and a verdict hasn’t been past down.

And why do white people get on these blogs and write like there speaking a black language and I don’t even understand there sarcasium and I’m what you call Black? Its coward to do so.

Hey lets let him have a fair trial and then speak on the matter, I mean I wasn’t against the Duke Lacrosse Players at all because the story seemed shaky as this on does as well. So now let’s let this one take its course angry people…so damned controlled by the media.

There’s another writer out there named Bill Simmons who came up with the ‘Tyson Zone’. I think that it should be renamed “The Pacman Zone” and Tyson should be the 2nd inductee after Pacman.

What a Dumb @$$.

By the way - Pacman, I look forward to watching Calvin torch you at the NFL level, just like he did when he was a freshmen at Sandy Creek and you were a senior at Westlake - that is - assuming you EVER get to play again.

Is it me or is every professional athlete that gets arrested BLACK?

Why are guns always involved?

Why do they attack cops?

Why do they beat-up their hoez?

Why don’t they pay child support?

Why do they constantly lie?

Like the ‘ol adage says…You can take the N* out of the ghetto, but you will NEVER take the ghetto out of the N*.

Finally, someone is not afraid (because they would be labeled a racist for following the rules) to stand up to these pieces of s**.

Tonya, Why is racism alove and well? I’ll tell you. Because people black and white can’t let it go. They have to insult and chastize the other race, thus provoking a response. People can’t display their intelligence and have a conversation. They have to belittle others. When I first read the article, I didn’t see anything racist about it whatsoever. I still don’t. However, as this blog has evolved, the communication has become racist. People think that MV is innocent and he may be, but my question is why do you want to defend a person who gives the “F* Y” to his home crowd. These people are the ones that afforded Arthur Blank the opportunity to make MV the highest paid player in the NFL.

As for PACMAN Jones, (what a stupid name), he needs to go. Guilty or not. Why? Perception!!! If you percieve your neighbor to be a crack addict, guess what he is until you have overwhelming evidence that he/she isn’t. 11 incidents with law enforcement gives the perception that he is a “thug” and is stupid. Does anything about these 11 incidents suggest that he is an upstanding citizen and should be voted man of the year or that he can be mentioned in the same sentence as Warrick Dunn when talking about players with character. I don’t think so. Think about this before you go defending these types of individuals.

We don’t know about Barry Bonds’ guilt with HGH or not. Only he and God know. However, again perception rears its head.

I will give you something else to ponder and compare. Some of you may have heard of a fellow named Audie Murphy. He served in the Military during WWII. He was a hero and the most decorated person in the military. After his service he became an actor and singer. This is the perception that the military wants everyone to remember because they don’t want their image tarnished. What many don’t know is that he suffered from PTSD and was an alcoholic, drug addict, a wife abuser. Now you can blame it on his PTSD, but, he is still responsible for his actions and this is the part that is never told. This is how perception can curve the minds eye.

Just think about some of the things said on this post. Don’t give in to the ones that offend you, ignore them. Rise up and demonstrate intelligence.

People like him are naive if he thinks white guys don’t do everyone of those things he listed.

I told “you people” not to pull-out any race cards, but you couldn’t stop to save your own lives. Good-work needs to be done on this boy. (I just called him a boy because he is obviously not man..So hold your cards!). The writers here have shown us the way to show that the good people here care about being under Vick’s thumb here.

We got work to do, and it will be done. The writers at the paper will continue to voice the good people’s rage and displeasure until Nike cuts him loose. It’s far too late for him to learn any more lessons. He’s going to be so watched and tied-up in investigations that he won’t be able to QB this team, and rightfully so. Whether Blank and The NFL will do it or not, its time to clean-up the QB position at all costs.

My brothers in the Feds investigation will make sure that the job gets done. They’ve kept me updated for 3 weeks. Vick is the “Saddam of this city”..Sweet-God I hate him… I hate him more than I hate PETA, so if we need to partner with them in this cause so be it. It’s time we take-out the trash, and put it back in its rightful place!

I am appalled with all the racists comments posted here by white people. I am also appalled at all the racists comments posted here by black people, at the same time accussing others as racists. So let’s take a moment and pretend all athletes are of one and the same race. Here goes. Pacman Jones and Michael Vick have each, by their actions, proven themselves to be morons as much as John Rocker is a moron. If not more so. Stupid is stupid, and it comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors. And, if you desire to be in the limelight while engaging in moronic acts, you get what you deserve. If one chooses to accuse someone because of their race, or defend someone because of their race, then one aspires to become an honorary moron themselves. Oh, by the way, CD. The law makes you responsible for your friends through such terminology as “abbetting”, “conspiracy,” “collusion,” “rico act”, etc., etc., and so much etc.

John Rocker would’ve been a legend in this city, if it wasn’t for the race-carders and left-wingers here and in the media.

He is by no means a Vick or a Pacman.. So mentioning them in the same sentence is a disgrace. This man spoke his mind, and just wasn’t politically correct about it, that’s all.

He is a good All-American guy, who is just a mis-understood rebel against those who fight against the good-natured principles.

Nobody was investigating him or writing articles about him. Nobody watching his every move, or his family for that matter..

In fact, we need more good outspoken men like Rocker. They are out here behind the scenes in everyday life. We just need to encourage them, and bring them to the forefront. We need to give them $170 million contracts so that they can inspire the good people to clean-up the image of this metro-area.

Michael Vick is an African American athlete. Because he is an athlete, he is admired my scores and scores of people. This is mainly due to his athletic attributes. Most of his fans do not know him personally.

Secondly, before Michael Vick cut his hair, he was the epitome of the “hip hop” generation. We wore his hair braided and there was an urban flair to his attire. Most caucasians do not identify with that. His speech pattern to most caucasians was broken and some even claimed to not understand him. Yet, Michael Vick’s style is “hip hop”.

My style is not “hip hop”, but I don’t see Michael Vick as a thug or a hood because he has adopted that style. In fact I tend to lean away from people that feel that everyone has to speak a certain way, think a certain way and dress a certain way. Why can’t we exemplify our individuality by being just that…individuals.

The same goes for those African Americans that say that Black people are talking “white” when they speak in a certain manner. They are not acceptable as well.

Be yourself. Be the best self you can be. Mind your own business. You’ll feel much better about yourselves.

Mike,

A person with some “intelligence” cannot let racism go when you experience it on a daily basis. It is quite understandable that you would not consider this article as being racist. Unless you are not a person of color( I assume that you are a white person), you would have no concept my friend. You would have to experience it to fully understand.

No one here is defending Pacman. We are only saying that the article has linked him to Bonds,Vick,Aaron,Crittendon,Young, Hewitt and Bryant in one little stupid and insignificant article. Did you ever notice that whenever there is something negative about a black person, there always seems to be a link to something else that is negative about another black person? If I were a person like you, I would draw from this “perception” that black people(especially black men)were all gangters and criminals. The press projects this image and you gobble it up as being the truth.Tonya was comparing Warren Dunn to Patrick Kearny not Pacman. Why did the Kearney case not become a big issue with the press? Could it be that Kearney is white but was given a pass because a black man allegedly committed the rape in his house and his image of being an All American looking fellow without dred locks needed to be preserved.

Mike, when you use such words as stupid, crack addict, intelligence, thug, character, etc. and disperse them in strategic places within a composition, you convey a position that may not necessarily be racist, but it is condescending. Just because we do not concur with your point of view, does not mean that we fall into the picture you may be trying to paint.

First of all, I was not comparing the two. I was simply stating that how can anyone defend either of these individuals based on their past actions based on perception. It is perception that creates the illusion of guilt from the public. My message to you is that Racism is alive and well because people won’t let it go. They have to have some reason to throw out the trump/race card as a defense to why this or that is happening rather than taking off their blinders and seeing the whole thing.

As far as MV flipping off a Saints fan is true or not, I don’t know, but it isn’t justified and obvioulsy you feel it was by your comments. There are impressionable youngsters out there that saw that on TV and are influenced by that, whether their parents try to teach them it is wrong, they will still think it is cool. Kids play and try to act like their sports idols and in the absence of their parents will act accordingly. I saw him put his finger to use also, however, I saw it on NATIONAL TV. So yes I still hold MV accountable for his actions and hold him to blame.

Perception Tonya has indicated to me that you are am avid MV fan. So be it. I used to be until his behavior turned south. Now I just see him as another player, nothing to brag about, not the savior of the Franchise. He could take them to the SB and I would still regard him as just another player.

Mike,

Don’t waste your breath trying to explain anything to the morons on this blog. The number on effect that Blacks have not gotten over since slavery is “Blame”. It is a mental disorder brought on by a lack proper treatment from a traumatic experience. Slavery ended around 150 years ago, but there are lingering effects that blacks have refused to recover from. I happen to be an African American who has been delivered from this disease, only because I was raised to think independently and not to be racist toward whites.

Good luck in trying to talk sense.

Would you want to be judged because you speak with a certain accent? African Americans are judged in this way everyday.

Do you remember the hoopla over Sen. Joe Biden stating that Sen. Barack Obama is articulate. I’m sure he felt he was giving a compliment, but what he was stating for us is obvious for quite a few African Americans.

Most African Americans are articulate and many more could be, they simply choose to speak another way.

I prefer to judge people by their character and not by the way they look and speak. Since I don’t know Michael Vick personally, I can’t judge his character.

You think I was stategically placing adjectives and thus being condescending? Explain.

My opinion of the name PACMAN, is just that, my opinion. If you want to consider that racist, then so be it. Crack addict was an example, it could have easily been serial killer, child molestor, or any thing else that society has a problem with. If you didn’t get the analogy, your fault, not mine. Explain how catagorizing Jones as a thug is an incorrect statement and that he demonstrates intelligence. He is stupid. How many times does it take for him to take notice that his actions are unacceptable in the NFL and in Society. I guess you would think this to be appropriate.

Mike/Dr.Doom,

Speaking from a non racial point of view, I really look forward to the day when we all might not consider race as being a factor in our daily lives. Pacman and MV seems to be doing something that no one can do..i.e. facilitate a forum for point/ counterpoint for discussions about racial matters. I am glad that you two seem to have reached that Zenith and can view sport issues concerning Aaron,Bonds,Vick, etc. without associated opinions of race. I am striving to be where you are.

It is amazing just how tolerant we have become concerning race since Henry broke the Babe’s record and Tiger won the Masters for the first time. If only I could eliminate my habit of listening and taking statements out of context. Recently, I began listening to sport talk radio. Check out 68.0 AM and listen to the commentary both locally and natinally from the ESPN. It is quite revealing. Race is big business as it increases the audience and obviously the readership of the AJC. Best wishes guys.

Dr. Doom,

I don’t want to dismiss anything inappropriate or illegal that Michael Vick or anyone else has done. That is not my reason for being on this blog.

Yes! I am a fan of Michael Vicks and I am a bigger fan of football. Until Michael Vick came to the Falcons, I had really stopped watching the NFL. The reasons stemmed from the Ray Lewis murder trial and the Rae Caruth Murder trial. I felt that NFL players were not reflecting good sound moral judgement.

Then Michael Vick came to town and I gave it one more try. Now he’s been involved in controvery, i.e. “herpes” (we forget that he got herpes from someone, if he has the problem), the watch at the airport (he didn’t commit the crime and the watch was returned), the water bottle in Miami with dark particles that smelled like marijuana in a hidden compartment(not mj), and now possible dog fighting on his property.

Should I drop him because he is not the type of person that I would want my daughter to bring home as a date (might want to after I get to know him) or should I stick with him and show him that he’s got some fans out here that believe in him?

You’ve told us what you would do. I prefer to do the later. And believe me, I’m not burying my head in the sand.

Mike,

You make a good point when you state that our children are impressionable. They are smart too, but they learn more from us (their parents) than they ever will from athletes.

We’re the ones that teach them to look in the mirrow and hate themselves. We are the ones that teach them to hate people that do not look like them. We teach them sexism, classism and every other ism. We are the most influential people in our kids lives for better or for worse.

Saying that our kids look up to these athletes is a cop out for not doing our job as parents. My daughter is a dancer and an actress. When I’m watching a particular dancer or actress and I enjoy their work, I’ll sometimes get my daughter to watch. I want her to respect that actors ability to perform, but I don’t want her to accept that person’s character. It’s important that we are able to discern the between the two.

I grew up with him on the southside of Atlanta and he is a kind hearted person that will do anything for you if he can. He has to look at those that he has surrounded hisself with and get away from them, cause they do not have anything to lose. The next time I speak to him the one thing i will say is get focus and chill out with REAL friends. Cause a REAL freind would step and say no, we dont have to do this. KEEP YOUR HEAD UP.

Boatrock,

I enjoy the loyalty you are showing to your friend. A lot of people show no loyalty and at the first appearance of trouble, will dump you like a “hot potato”.

You’d better go to AtlantaFalcons.com if you want to discuss football.

Larry W….This is definitely not a football blog. Look at Shultz’s title for the countdown.

Boatrock, I commend you on your loyalty. Hopefully, Pacman can pull himself together and be the best defensive back in the league. He’s has got to rid himself of that posse if he has any hope at all.

Adam Jones and Mike Convick can become really close in prison. it’s time to get some of these black criminals out of the league and put them into prison, where they belong!

The Commish & David Duke,

While you’re rounding up the black thugs in the NFL, stop by the white house and take the biggest criminals in history to prison also.

I understand your hate towards my people, you’re upset because your white women love us..lol Your pale face momma is clipping my toe nails right now…lol

I don’t care if any white people come to the Falcons game ever again, because yall didn’t support the Falcons back in the 80’s or 90’s before Vick came to town.Because if wasn’t for blacks coming to the games and supporting the Falcons, and Vick there would be no sell outs at the dome,no monday night football games or prime time games, there wouldn’t even be a need for a Falcon store, because 90% of the merchandise sold is vick related!so yall stay at home and be bitter at Vick and go to Ga Bulldogs games, because we don’t need you there! You guys don’t even support the Atlanta Braves when they were in the playoffs!and that team is majority white.(go read Bradly’s article about Atlanta fans)So continue to complain on the blogs about Vick while we still have 30,000 people on the waiting list for season tickits.

Waite a minute 911 we want all fans white, black brown, to be at the games . We need good fans . But we don’t need hater of this team white , black or brown that are non fans just pure hater at the game. we all want a winner , even the haters will come back if we win. They are not true fans. This will be a great year because of the haters and hateful sports writer that have made this team a outcast and Vick a outcast. I tell you this year will be so sweet because we prove the real fans of the Atlanta falcons we have a great QB great defense and offense a very good coach and owner. 911 don’t push hate pull for the team. And as we win you can give the hater hell because of hate and that they don’t know football. Great year11-5 and wins in the play offs. This is our Atlanta Falcons team!
