Could Petrino have second thoughts?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
THE TUESDAY COUNTDOWN…
10: The problem with trying to celebrate Bobby Cox’s record-breaking ejection is that the umpires are going to make him leave the field - and when he gets to the clubhouse, he’s going to be the only one there. Maybe they should leave an ice-cream cake in the fridge?
9: Yankees fans can’t wait for Roger Clemens to start - because then maybe they can catch the Devil Rays.
8: I realize one reason that Bobby Petrino took the Falcons job was because he wanted to see what he could do with Michael Vick for one season. But at what point does he think, “Is this worth it?”
7: No, we don’t know where the DogGate is going. But we know that the Falcons’ entire off-season has been - and will continue to be - disrupted by the investigation. That’s mini-camps, OTAs and meetings when Petrino is trying to implement a new scheme.
6: You, the optimistic Falcon fan, might think: “Training camp isn’t until July. The season isn’t until September.” But this case doesn’t seem close to resolution. Watch how quickly July and September get here.
5: The Evander Holyfield-Lou Savarese fight has been billed, “The Road to the Heavyweight Championship.” I guess, “The Road to Nowhere” would have made the banner too short.
4: Evidence of how far off the radar the Anaheim-Ottawa Stanley Cup final is: NHL officials phoned newspaper beat writers who aren’t traveling to cover the series in hopes of drumming up interest so they would write stories.
3: By the way, for those who poo-poo ESPN’s interview with the dog-fighting insider, saying he’s a bottom feeder and lacks credibility: People - he’s in dog-fighting. Did you think the “insider” would be a nuclear physicist or brain surgeon?
2: But if you really want a reason to turn down the sound on ESPN, here’s one: Keyshawn Johnson.
1: Kobe Bryant is upset that there aren’t any good players around him and the Lakers have a lousy general manager. Gee. Maybe he shouldn’t have chased everybody away.

I find it disheartening that in today’s society we, as Americans, still find it with in ourselves to pass blind judgment. Historically, it has been knee-jerk responses by angry, irrational, and often hateful people and organizations that have led to firings, wrongful convictions, and even death. I am not saying who is guilty and who is not, but I do know that in the media’s court, the idea of guilt has been satisfied with mere accusations. In criminal court you need proof BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT. Some of you may not want to hear this but its true, we all rush to judgment on sensational issues and we are sometimes proven wrong. This reminds me of an old-fashioned lynching of a slave, and its not because Michael Vick is an African American (solely) but because of the blood-in the water feeding frenzy that has taken place and the fact that his life is controlled by the watchful eye of public opinion. If you will allow me I can show you each player’s role. Roger Goodell is the plantation owner, but he just works them he is not really calling the shots. The team “owners” they are the overseer’s, they have to check everyone when they are told by the plantation owner. But that’s never how the lynching takes place, why? because the plantation only runs smoothly when everyone can work, if you take one away you can’t get as much work done. Have you ever heard the story of Emmit Till, or Mack Charles Parker, or Rosewood, or Black Wall Street…well that’s when the lynching takes place. The lynching is caused by an accusation, be it true or false, and that accusation festering like a sore, spreading like wildfire, and outraging the townsfolk. The media is the outraged townspeople, the woman crying rape, and ultimately the lynchmob. They are the one’s that are telling Goodell you better whoop your boy, and Goodell may just be spineless enough to oblige. Do I know if Mike Vick did anything? No (but I he has not been accused of anything and I hope that he did not) and people have been wrong about him before (see water bottle). Do I believe the words of a man that has made a career out of snitching and is now saying people are worried about Vick snitching (well what does that guy have to gain from talking to espn and hell shouldn’t people be worried about him snitching?) I know that right now this seems to be leading toward the lynching of mike vick (not literally) but in effigy by killing his career. Its o.k. to not like him because he went 7-9 or you got mad cause he flipped the bird, My challenge to everyone, including Jeff Schultz, Terrence Moore, and Roger Goodell, is to not make up your mind about his guilt or his innocence w/out any real evidence of wrongdoing and to not play a role in this lynch mob mentality by convicting a man who has not even been charged or accused of a crime.

Here is my question about the “insider”, in the interview he states without out a doubt he saw Vick in 2000 at a fight waving around $30,000 and $40,000 dollars at a fight. So since Vick wasn’t drafted until April of 2001, should this story be tossed or should we look closer at VT booster club funding.

Whether Vick is convicted of anything or not is irrelevant. That fact is, he’s constantly displaying a lack of character, intelligence, and not to mention, passing skills. I would say get rid of him, but that would mean Joey Harrington would be QB: Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Jeff, it very clear that you are utilizing “Dog-gate” as more ammo in your long-standig agenda to run Vick out of town. The “insider” on ESPN is nothing more than a low-level “snitch.” If you had done only 5 minutes of research on the Surrey County dog-fighting taskforce you would know that they have convicted only three people from over 13 cases and 6 years. Given those statistics, you MUST ask the following questions: 1. how reliable can this “insider” be with this low success rate? 2. If his accusations are so reliable, why haven’t charges been brought? 3. Don’t you find it inconsistent that the “insider” could describe only one incident (over 6 years ago) that he alledgedly encountered Vick at a dog-fight yet he labelled Vick a “heavyweight” although Vick dog was alledgedly defeated? 4. Don’t realize that people from all socio-economic status have been involved dog-fighting? If you would have just researched the arrests from the dog-fighting raid in Newton County two years ago, you would have noticed this. However, that would have required that you act like a journalist and write a balanced article. The sad reality is that the majority of your peer sports writers are no better.

Jonathan,
The answer to your question is no. Even though that incident is before he was drafted by the falcons, it is still related information to an ongoing current investigation. It’s for all those idiots that said there has never been any evidence that Vick is involved with dog fighting. That’s kind of how it works bub.

Petrino knew what he was getting into when he was hired! Mr. Blank paid him a lot of money to look the other way on Mr. Vick! They know he is a “Doper” and the league is using him to market themselves. This has been going on for three years, he never had any issues before this. Hopefully, after this season, he will be traded to the Giants for Manning or Oakland for Russell and the Falcons can move towards fixing the franchise. This season is and will be a disaster! I don’t think Harrington can save us but you never know! As for Kobe, they don’t have enough foreign players in LA to carry his water. The trend is very clear, the strong fundamentals and good shooting tech

Is it a concidence that Vick and Kobe are now being talked about in the same sentences? I think not. They’re both products of a system that weighs little on character and more on talent. Remember Ricky Williams?
As a true Falcons fan, I hope this goes away but as a realist, it’s only going to get worse. Do you think Houston would reconsider the trade? If not then 3 or 4 wins will be a good season this year.

In case you weren’t paying attention, here’s a quick recap:
How I Spent My Summer Vacation by Peyton Manning 1) Studied game film and playbooks 2) Worked out religiously 3) Served as a role model for youth and citizens of my community 4) Honored the legacy of my father 5) Shined my Super Bowl ring
How I Spent My Summer Vacation by Michael Vick 1) Smoked dope 2) Hung out with my homies 3) Played water boy for my stable of pit bulls 4) Donated an embarrassing pittance to Virginia Tech, my alma mater, in memory of shooting victims 5) Served as a role model for thugs everywhere
So who do you think is on the verge of NFL immortality and who is on the verge of a prison sentence?

To complete my thought, all four teams in the semis in the NBA have foreign born players playing key roles. Duncan, Parker, Ginobli, Ilgauskas, etc…In order to compete you need these players who can shoot, defend, and pass. Because of our lack of coaching at the AAU level only a tremendous physical specimen like James can make it in the NBA. By the way, Kobe learned his game in Italy!

In response to Johnathan’s ignorant reply above…it was reported by the “insider” to be approx $5000 in 2000. He clearly stated the $30-40,000 came in a year after the Falcon’s paid to much for him. Listen before you blurt out your stupidity.

Hey Y’all:
Let the legal system do its thing. If Vick is guilty or innocent leave it to the courts and not the media. However, those of you who respond on this blog accusing Vick already appear to want to point the finger at somebody doing wrong to minimize the guilt and stress in your own personal life. It is always good to say “aha, I caught you” if you got something. But here, there is nothing. What we do have is a “crack head” informant who is probaly negotiating and plea bargain with the feds to lowers some charges against him. They are willing to say anyhting. No informant should be given the title of “legitimate informant”. They are all liars and can be co-opted to say anyhting law enforcement wants them to say, for a price or something to make a deal with. Where the hell did the find this dirt bag. This investigation is really getting low down. They are reaching all the way back to before Vick was in the NFL. Let’s stop these “shananagans”. He is not in high school or college. Stop looking for those he may have known him then, who are now criminals looking for an out. He is currently in the NFL and has been there since 2001. Seven years.
God Bless You Vick. I hope they diminish this thing like that of the rape that was at Patrick Kearney’s house. Like the drugs that Brett Favre is addicted to. Like the out of wedlock birth Tom Brady had. Let’s be equal in how we judge and investigate our athletes. Vick, you will be vindicated, as you should be, in this case. Hearsay and innuendo’s should not apply hear. Your only crime, if you want to call it one, is the bad people and relatives he has associated himself with. We are all guilty of that at times.

I had classes with Mike Vick while EARNING my degree @ VT. He was/is incredibly stupid. My god, he was fast/stupid !! Will he learn an NFL playbook ? Doubt it. I’m a loyal Hokie but what did we expect from a guy from the same neighborhood as A. Iverson ? A rocket scientist ? Solution : Suspend him for the entire season. The only thing that he notices is his wallet. Sad to say, but he’s nothing but a ghetto thug. Notice how he garners no endorsements ? What a bum. We let the true professional get away to Texas. I am not a Vick hater but a true falcons fan and have been since my teenage years. The one thing that bothers me the most is that this whole off season has been surrounded by bad news day after day and as a fan it’s hard to swollow that our season hasn’t even started yet but I feel as if it is already over. Every year I have looked foward to the coming season with the wonder of how good we are going to be, but this year is different than any other. Now I wonder of what bad news will come our way today. Mr. Vick, gulity or not I wish you would surround yourself with better people so these sort of things don’t happen. Mr. Blank, you need to be a better leader of your team to not allow this sort of stuff to disrupt the team. I know that you can not make a stance on this yet but when you can it needs to be a strong one. If you think I am angery you would be correct to think so, after all I am a fan.

I have supported Mike Vick for quite some time, but these new allegations may be what break the camel’s back. It’s true that there may not be enough evidence to convict him in a criminal court right now, if ever at all. But the fact remains that with each passing day things look worse and worse for Vick. While I don’t think he can be convicted for breaking the law right now on mostly circumstantial evidence, it may certainly be time for the Falcons to cut him loose. If you or I had this type of allegation floating around, we would be fired on the spot without a bit of further investigation. Mike Vick may be a superstar, but he certainly doesn’t deserve any better treatment than what we would receive if we were charged with this gruesome and disgusting felony.

People who defend Vick just don’t get it at all.
It has absolutely nothing to do with convictions. It has to do with perception.
The NFL is a very fickle league. There are a lot of NFL talent that is not in the league for one reason or another.
They do not need players that constantly have trouble swirling around them.
I think that the dumbest thing that people try to throw into this is race. Atlanta has had a lot of black athletes that did things the right way and stayed out of trouble. Why didn’t the press go after Hank Aaron, Jam Anderson, William Andrews, THE HAMMER, D Hall, D Wilkins, K Willis, David Justice, etc etc etc.
I guess they were picking on Todd Marinovich because he’s Croation?

Guilty or not, it’s about lack of character.
I don’t care how he runs or plays the game, as long as he continues to let our city down with his personal actions. Atlanta is embarrassed by his actions off the field. He just makes it worse every time he opens his mouth.

If people would read the reports, Vick is having a great “Football” offseason despite the dog fighting allegations. Petrino and his staff are happy with what he has been doing. He has been working hard to learn the playbook and his accuracy has been improving. The problem with Vick is that he had never had a coach push him. Petrino is not the type of coach to lay off anyone. He is going to let you know when you mess up rookie or veteran. I like the fact that he is a no nonsense coach. As far as the dog fighting allegations. Let this thing play out. There hasn’t been any coverage of the rape a Kerney’s house beacuse he was well liked here. Some people in Atlanta don’t want Vick to be the QB because he is black. If there were dog fighting allegations against Peyton Manning and he was the QB here in Atlanta, we would have heard very little about it. It’s always about race in the South. What year is this? You rednecks need to give it a rest. The world is changing. Minorities can live anywhere you live. We just choose not to live around rednecks beacuse we don’t like trailers. If you were a true fan, you would wait until this this plays out and not convict him in the media. If he is involved in dog fighting, he deserves to be suspended. You rednecks already have him hanging from a tree somewhere in South Georgia. Ridiculous. Schaub is gone. Get over it. Go Falcons.

Traci, you are a racist!! Jig is short for jigaboo which is a very derogatory term when referring to blacks. You racists can try to fool people, but eventually it comes out, just like when you find out that your meth using husband is really your brother!! Keep having those retarded kids racists!

Shultz, Wyche, Moore. Yellow journalists at a rather unsophisticated level of development, absent any discernible degree of professionalism, with nothing of value to offer. An unnamed, heavily disguised informant accuses a high profile athlete of a crime, and these guys embrace it as truth. They go well beyond any obligation to simply report the story. Their columns demonstrate little objectivity. Shultz’s attempt to morally equate dogfighting with other misbehaviors is laughable, as it is so poorly thought through. And now we’re told that facts and evidence do not matter - just perception. None of really believe that, but it gets a pass in this case. Ok, if all you need is hearsay and innuendo to condemn a person, how about this? I heard a report the other day that Shultz himself is heavily involved in dogfighting, that he bets large amounts of monay, that he is part of this scummy underworld. There you go. The AJC should now fire him, right?

I really don’t care which way this Vick investigations goes. I’m just tired of people claiming he’s innocent until proven guilty. While that is true, people also have a right to their opinion on the subject. Black, white or otherwise, we citizens can voice our opinion for or against Vick. If I think he’s guilty- guess what?! I can can say that because I am not a judge, prosecuter, or his attorney and vise versa. People can talk and beleive what they want about Vick. None of it will be correct because none of us are insiders. I hate the arguements saying there is or isn’t proof. Just argue your point and quit saying someone doesn’t have a right to judge him. As long as we aren’t directly involed in the investigation, we can think what we want about it.

I am not sure why people have to always turn everything into a racial topic, but Black Panther, I believe you have made some of the most hatefilled rascist statements of all. You must be the black version of the KKK. You must truly hate and despise the white race. I really feel sorry for you.
Me, I just love football, and I wish Michael Vick could just keep himself out of the news like most of the other players in the NFL do. INCLUDING like most of the other black players do, Black Panther.
And don’t for one minute think people in the south don’t want a black player doing well. Ever hear of Hank Aaron? Herschel Walker? Emmitt Smith? Dominique Wilkins? William Andrews? Just to name a few?
Idiot.

If the falcons had a better season last year you people who are on the I hate Vick band wagon would be all over his nuts simple as that…. Also for the so called informant everyone knows that informants are convicts that were busted and sent in to be a snitch to get less time or no time for their crime… Also where would Vick get 30,000 to bet on a fight he wasnt even drafted…. I bet if your all american white boy Brady was being investigated for the same thing you people wouldnt have CRAP to say (and I am a white person writing this)!

There are two kinds of pro athletes. Warrick Dunn is an example of one kind. Grew up in a one parent household in a bad section of New Orleans. His policewoman mother was killed. He ended up raising his brothers and sisters. Never gets into trouble. Never hear his name in a bad way. Does good things (charities, etc.) for society.
Then there are the Mike Vicks and Pacman Joneses of the world. Some are bad dudes. Some hang around with bad dudes. All of them have no common sense and think they can do whatever they want with no price to pay.
I don’t know Mike’s involvement with dog fighting. But if you look at his history of stuff, where there’s smoke there’s fire. Another Warrick Dunn is he is not.
This isn’t about race, or the AJC, or some vendetta against Mike. It’s about him, and it doesn’t say much about him that is good. He’s created all these messes, and now he’ll have to deal with them, which he should.

Jeff: You are the worst type of sportswiter. You never seem to support any of our sports teams. It is always on the negative. Atlanta does not have the type of support of our sports team as they do in other cities and it is largely due to the media outlets in Atlanta. If Vick is arrested and charged, he needs to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Dog fighting is a felony and should be. It is inhumane. He is not above the law. But Vick has not been arrested nor charged. His cousin has not even been arrested or charged and he was in the house. Thus far, it is all hearsay. Until he is arrested or charged, it is not relevant to football or the Falcons. Please arrest him or charge him, if not, let this story die. It does not help our team. All of us would hope to be innocent until proven guilty. Let the justice system work. Not one of us could deny that. Jeff, you are a sportwriter. Do us a favor. Do your job and write about sports.

When Dany Heatley wins his Stanley Cup with Ottawa and Michael Vick wins his Super Bowl ring with the Washington Redskins, they’re going to sit down to lunch together and laugh about all the nonsense they put up with in Atlanta.
Getting the hell out of Atlanta was the best move Heatley ever made, and it will be the same for Vick… can’t wait!

LG, You as an individual have every right to your own opinion. You can be as uninformed and illogical as you wish. The problem occurs when persons who know no more than you, but who pass themselves off as professionals and who are in a position to shape public opinion, are given license to express what is essentially their narrowminded views, but because they are “journalists” their columns have a character of legitimacy.

Anything but the MV issue….

Jonathan:
In your comments retaliating against “SMAD” and “Dr. Doom” you probably should have done a little more research before you prepared your retaliation. Vick never was a “SENIOR” in college. He was drated out of his Sophomore year! You can copy and paste all you want from other websites, but you will only be credible when you can actually defend yourself with some truths.

So be sure to run out and have about 12 kids out of wedlock and leave them on the government dole so they can start smoking crack and killing and robbing EACH OTHER by the time they are around 10 years old. Michael Vick is already on the downside of his career. He’s accumulated injuries that have already sapped some of his speed, and speed was all he ever had. He should have been run out of town when he flipped off the fans at home. Vick is a disaster. The sooner he’s gone and we get a real QB, the better.

Seems to me that the AJC and the national media polished Vick’s knob for years and glossed over almost everything until last season. I guess the “Dirty Birds” to the fans woke some people up. Anyone crying “Racist!” in this situation is, as some have mentioned, failing to realize the vast majority of black athletes in this town and across the country who don’t have these kind of issues surrounding them. I have no problem with someone defending Vick as a man (everyone has that right), but he’s not an all-time great football player. In the end, his off-the-field problems will make it easier for the Falcons to admit that he’s an average QB and move on. If you don’t want to support the Falcons after that, fine. All I know is that I’ve been a Falcon fan long before Vick and I’ll be one long after he’s gone.

Traci, ignore Roswell Ed. Regardless of your typing, you have shown the intelligence and good sense to send your children to private school where they have the chance to get a decent education…unlike most of us who have to take our chances with the public education tarpits. And Roswell Ed has shown by his lack of breeding and class that he clearly is a product of the public school system, my guess is one of the ilk of that trade school from North Avenue where I would expect nothing less than the type of virulent diatribe he espouses.

I told you people three months ago that Vick is history. However, I also told you that it is not entirely his fault. It is our system that has allowed athletes to make this incredible amount of money for playing a sport, propping them up under tremendous pressure to live a normal life. The worst thing is to turn this stuff into a race issue, that is so sad indeed. Don’t judge Vick; pray for him in these troubled days ahead. This could happen to anyone. Football is not so important in the overall scheme of things and of life.

Yeah Jeff it has cross his mind everytime you put a stupid story in your blog. You are a joke and should be put in jail for stupidity trying to kill Vick’s Pro Football life based on lie after lie and the AJC that goes for you to no balance at all. I bet you did not think to talk to Lee Suggs who played with Vick at Va Tech in 2000 he has gone on record to state that Vick did’t have any money that year he was always begging for money to take his female friends out so how did he get 30k to 40k to bet on dogs you jerk in college all you had to do was be respondsible but know you rather go with the lies GOD bless Vick and the real fans in the ATL lord knows we need it with jerks like Jeff.S and his rebel flag pickup truck driving punks.
