Contract year turning sour for Andruw

Mark Bradley

The way Andruw Jones is going, he might not be beyond the Braves’ price range this winter. Then again …

The way he’s going, the Braves might not consider him indispensable anymore.

Since nobody has ever known what Andruw Rudolph Jones is apt to do at any given moment, it’s risky to look five minutes ahead, let alone five months. But April and May haven’t gone the way any player in a contract year would script, and June will see publication of a book by the justifiably esteemed Jayson Stark that identifies Jones as “the most overrated center fielder of all time.”

The demon agent Scott Boras will still demand massive money for a 30-year-old who has won nine Gold Gloves and who hit a franchise-record 51 homers two years ago. Figure $18 million per season as a baseline. (Asked if Boras ever asks for less than you’d think, John Schuerholz almost laughed before saying, “Oh, no.”)

But here’s the bigger question, bigger even than Boras and his reputation: Is Jones still the player he was in 2005, or is he, as Stark uses diminishing defensive data to suggest, an athlete on the clear decline?

It was only two summers ago we were toasting Andruw’s breakthrough season. We’d waited for nearly a decade, and finally it arrived — a league-leading 51 homers and 128 RBIs. Last year brought more of the same, albeit with 10 fewer home runs, and seemed to furnish further evidence Jones had ascended to a higher level. But now, sad to say, the old puzzling Andruw is back with a vengeance.

In 48 games Jones is hitting .215 with 17 more strikeouts than hits. He struck out five times against Boston last Sunday. He has one home run in May.

Is this just another of Andruw’s infamous downturns, or is it something worse? Said Bobby Cox, ever chipper: “I’ve seen him in slumps before, and he’s always come out of them and will be carrying the team on his shoulders.”

Might the weight of impending free agency be pressing down? Terry Pendleton, the hitting coach who was once a free agent himself, said he didn’t think it was “until last week in Boston, when I thought, ‘Maybe it is bugging him.’ At times it seems he does try to do more. He does have pride: In this business we all do — that’s how we got where we are. And you do tend to hear negative things.”

True to his famously serene self, Jones doesn’t see these latest flailings as anything significant. “I’m seeing the ball pretty good,” he said Friday night. “I had one bad game in Boston and people made a big deal about it.”

Does he worry about where he might next year? “I don’t think about that. I’m playing baseball right now. I’m doing whatever I can to help the team however I can.”

Jones stroked a double off Jamie Moyer in the second inning Friday, one of his two extra-base hits in the last dozen games. He has struck out 18 times in those last 12 games. Cox has dropped Jones in the order, a major concession for the patron saint of loyalty. Still, it’s important to note that this is Andruw Jones, which means things are seldom as they seem for very long.

He had an 0-for-28 stretch in April 2005 and was hitting .239 at month’s end. He wound up second to Albert Pujols in the MVP voting. It might well be that, as Stark suggests, he’s coasting on his reputation as a defender. (Frankly, the Braves’ Andruw-saves-a-run-a-game claims were always fanciful.) But to dismiss him altogether would be wildly premature.

He has looked bad before and will look bad again. That’s just Andruw being Andruw. Boras is going to find some team willing to meet his price — that’s why Boras is Boras — and that price will surely be too high for the Braves. And then they’ll find another center fielder, and he won’t be as good as this one.

I would think this bodes well for Andrew staying, until Scott Boras appears in the picture. Is he worth the expected money? Who knows. Nice knowin’ ya Andrew!

At present Andruw would best help his team by sitting on the bench. Bobby should bench him for 4 or 5 games to proof to him that he is replaceable and maybe help he snap out of whatever twilight zone he’s in. He doesn’t even look good in the field, and the sad part of it, he doesn’t look like he really cares. The bottom line Andruw is hurting the Braves.

I hope that whereever he goes, the fans and team management will be half as patient as Atlanta has been. Can you imagine the abuse he would take in Boston or New York if he were playing in either of those cities this year?

The Braves will have a hard time finding a replacement? Yea right, the last time they won a World Series game, Marquis Grissom was the center fielder. The Braves will easily be able to replace Andruw Jones. The Braves need more pitching.

Stark brings up a critical point in his article on Andruw - that perception becomes reality and he has benefited from this well-documented phenomenon. Yes, defensively he was absolutely phenomenal, almost otherwordly, in his early years. But those years of highlight-reel-catch after highlight-reel-catch created a mental picture that I think has become permantently engraved in our minds. And now when we wathc AJ play we don’t see today’s Andruw - the chunky, half-a-step-slower, body-worn-out-from all-those-diving-catches Andruw. We see the AJ of the past decade. And Stark is right - he stopped being that Andruw at least 2-3 years ago, maybe even before that.

I really like the guy and appreciate his loyalty to the club. But it’s time to face reality. He’s not worth anything over $7-8M, but there’s no way he won’t get an offer for more than that. Unfortunately, it’s time to part ways.

How is Chipper (king of the disable list), Andruw (swing and fall down), Thorman, (swing and try to kill an outside pitch and hope I hit it) and Woodward (haven’t help a bit) helping the Braves? they can’t even help themselves. The Braves with their help are on the way down. Bobby has got to put in the player that want to play, like Diaz, Saltalamacchia, and Harris full time if the Braves don’t want to repeat last year. Go and get a qualified third baseman to replace Jones. Tell the announcers to stop telling us how Clipper hurts and all that crap. We know he’s the King aliments. We’re Braves fans, We follow the Braves and Jones I think plays for the Braves.

First, to say that Andruw is only worth 7-8 Million is crazy. Gary Matthews Jr. signed a $10mil/year deal this off season. Vernon Wells got $15million/year. Is Andruw on the same level as these two? Yup. More hardware on the shelves than both of these guys combined also. Plus the fact that he is only 30 years old right now. And to Dale, when the Braves got Grissom in ‘95 for their World Series season, Grissom was considered one of the top 3 Center Fielders in the game. Trying to make it sound like he was some kind of scrub is insulting. I think you need to brush up on your baseball history a little bud. Now to Ralph, what kind of qualified 3rd baseman you talking about that would be available? Troy Glaus? Eric Chavez? Because guys like Ryan Zimmerman, David Wright and Miguel Cabrerra are pretty much locked up with their teams. Chipper may be ailing, but name another 3rd Baseman that puts up his kind of numbers that isn’t currently locked up or won’t demand more than the $14 million that Chipper is making right now. You will be very hard pressed to do so.

I love it how all these Braves “fans” fall so hard on their team when it hits a rough patch. Instead of replacing the team I believe we need to find some fans who appreciate what these guys do and realize that sometimes you struggle. Atlanta fans have had is so good over the past 17 years and some show none of the loyalty and passion that the players they pretend to cheer show on a daily basis.

Andruw’s nine straight gold gloves are remarkable and he will undoubtedly win a tenth after this season. He is making 13.5 million this season and any team crazy enough to give him 18 million or more per year will be sorely disappointed in their investment due to his obviously diminished offensive game. Any player that would deliberately give the other team two-thirds of the diamond(dead pull hitter) does not respect the game , lacks the intelligence to use the whole field or as Jason Stark has already said , is totally overrated. Andruw continues to abuse the loyalty and respect that both Cox and his teammates give to him. Team player , obviously not. Overpaid , already a fact. A brave in 2008 , not a chance in hell.

Jones has some very good years left, even if his talent is declining somewhat. If I were him, I would get the load off my back, go in and see John S. WITHOUT Boras (take my father along), sign a new contract for a reasonable price (for both sides), and then RELAX. He seems very tight, pressing at the plate, and even somewhat unsure in the field (for HIM). If he gets the contract year pressure removed, he might be just fine. Agents like Boras hurt the game and sometimes even hurt their players, even if he makes them rich (and also unhappy).

Don’t agree with the assessment of Chipper Jones. Yes, he misses games because of injuries. But who would you replace him with? I think what the Braves are doing with him is the perfecy scenario. When he’s hurt play someone else, when he’s not, play him. Maybe you should ask the opposing pitchers who they would rather face, Chipper or his replacement. On the Andrew Jones issue…there was a ball hit by Ryan Howard in the 7th inning last night that fell in right center. I mean it just fell, one small bounce and that was it. When was the last time you saw a ball like that not caught by a center fielder, any center fielder. Not lately. I don’t agree with Jason Stark’s opinion of Andrew,I think he’s had some great years, but I do believe he’s playing without a lot of passion right now, and unless he finds something soon there will be a big hole in the Braves lineup that they can’t afford.

I have always been an Andruw Jones fan as far back as I can remember. However, I am not going to blindly defend a player who isn’t going to do what it takes to turn his struggles around. Andruw has too much pride to listen to Pendleton. Too much pride to simply say, “Yeah I’m stuggling and I am just as upset as anybody about it”. Instead he says, “it ain’t no big deal”. Uh, Andruw…I think you’d find a lot of Braves season ticket holders who help pay your salary disagreeing with you on that. Andruw needs to swallow his pride, take extra batting practice, work with TP, and learn to hit the ball to all fields. But alas, Andruw won’t do any of those things. Why? Well, simply put, Andruw has too much pride.

Regardless of this. Andruw has done a lot for this organization in the past. All of his current struggles aside, it is gonna be a sad day when Andruw plays his last game here in a Braves uniform. I for one, will give him a heartfelt standing ovation.

Atlanta and all Braves fans support this team, not just one or two player, but a group of players. When these overpay players, don’t perform or can play up to par, the fans who go out to and support this team play have a right to yell scream and complain, cheer or boo. If the players don’t like it, get a real job in a productive field. Just like if one works for wal-mart or anywhere and don’t preformed their duties, you go to the manager, except in this case its a statement on the web site of the AJC. One can express their feeling or frustration for the love of the game or for the team. The desired to see the team play at its best with what they got is necessary and not letting up is essential. The Braves have being known to do both. Not that the Braves management real cares what the fans have to say, it just makes the fans feel better. These guys ( the players) are a handful of entertainers, they provide entertainment to a group of people (the fans) and get pay outrages amount of money to demonstrated their talent for a few hours a day. So with the good they (the player) have to take the bad and the bad is being criticizes by the fans. No fan is ever satisfy when their team loses, defeat is unacceptable, not when its their team. These players are treated like royalty and which includes the best of everything, the best medical care money can buy. So they are expected to give 110% every single game they play. Must fans don’t want to hear about a bad finger or a bad toe. The fans want to see a winner, not hear time after time, a bunch of excuses from announces who keep repeating the medical list or aliments of Chipper and others who may have hurt themselves open a coke can or signing their endorsement checks, and then there is the camera that gets right in the players face, so we can the strain on their faces from the pain, between spits. But its only a game, so if its going to be play, give it everything you got or don’t play it.

First of all~ I’m sure most of you guys saw the play that chipper was hurt on? I do realise if this was the NFL Chipper would not have missed a start due to this injury(one game a week), however this IS BB the intangibles are much more dynamic than the NFL. It was a fluke play that Chipper got hurt on. As you all are very well aware~ in BB you dont “just” have to hold on to the ball~ block~ or catch a pass~ or for that matter throw a pass. Gripping the bat and feeling comfortable at the plate are essential! This injury doesnt have anything to do with Chipper’s conditioning or lack there of, It was a fluke!!!! Of course QB’s Have to pass just like a BB player has to throw~but it is totally different in my mind. It is a 162 game season~ not 16~ Chipper WILL be back soon! Chipper WILL continue to play the game to a very extraordinary level! I agree with an earlier post, that, to criticize Chipper is not really understanding what Chipper is and what he does and continues to do for this team!

C Jones and A Jones are “over the hill” and should move on. McCann is overrated and is pathetic when throwing to second. How many times has a lead off double happened, and three outs later, is still on second. Can anyone on the team bunt? Smoltz is the only starter we have. Hudson will be lucky to have 12 wins. The Braves will be lucky to be in fourth place when the season end!

To question Andruw’s ability to make adjustments at the plate has some merit, but to ignore the man’s 10 year contributions to the game has no merit whatsoever. To question anything about Chipper’s game is without merit and shows total ignorance of the game itself. Read Jayson Stark’s chapter on Andruw, the numbers show Jones is declining year by year. As soon as his average starts heading up let’s trade him. I hear the Angels are looking for bat. We can get a lot of pitching next year instead of having 18 million dollars per year being tied up in an outfielder who is well beyond his prime.

Look,

You can laugh about it, shout about it but any way you care to slice it, the Braves need another quality starter and if it means giving up a Salty, then you do it.

As the guys on the Fox broadcast in yesterday’s game pointed out, “The Braves have a #1, #1A, and a bunch of #5 starters after that.”

The pitching beyond Smoltz and Hudson is second division all the way. Time to belly up to the trade bar, plank down some gold and walk away with a quality arm. End of report.

Andruw is a Brave and should always be a Brave. That said, he is not worth more than 14 maybe 15 mil a year. Any team willing to pay him more than that can have him.

This is just like the Furcal free agent year. At the time, he was worth no more than 6-8 million a year…maybe. The Dodgers offered him 10 and that was way too much…goodbye and thanks for your service.

I love Andruw, he’s my favorite player and many times he frustrates me to no end, but at the end of the day, I’m a Braves fan first and right now he’s hurting the team.

Anyone who thinks Andruw is fat should see Miguel Cabrera these days… He is going Bartolo Colon style.

And Andruw can say hes seeing the ball well all he wants, but if that were the case, hed be hitting the ball hard and it would just be right at people. Grounders to the shortstop on low and outside pitches cannot be construed as seeing the ball well.

By Dawg19

May 27, 2007 12:17 PM | Link to this

Actually Greg, Andruw probably IS seeing the ball really well right now. His big problem is that he has a HUGE hole in his swing. He is constantly pulling his front shoulder and hips out right when he starts his swing. That makes him extrememly succeptable to any pitch on the outer half of the plate and all off speed pitches. It will take an adjustment and a little time to get through it. Things like that don’t come overnight.

The Braves need to go out and get some help, John needs to get off his butt and make a move to get some pitching cause Davies and McBride and all these other relievers are not cutting it. And they dont need another stint in the minors, if they arent cutting it DO SOMETHING. The season isnt going to slow down so they can develop players…..FOR GOODNESS SAKE DONT REPEAT LAST YEAR…WE HAVE A CHANCE THIS YEARS AND THE MANAGEMENT OF THIS TEAM IS GONNA CAUSE THE DOWN FALL THIS SEASON UNLESS THEY MAKE CHANGES !!!!

I am a former life long Braves fan, but now a devout Nats fan. The military moved me to the DC area in the late 80’s, and I traveled to MLB cities all along the east coast to see the Braves play baseball. I later swore that I would support the Expos if they moved to DC, and I have held true to that promise, and am now a season ticket holder. The way I see it, we (Nats) now have Stan Kasten calling the shots, Pat Corrales helping coach the shots, Don Sutton announcing the shots, and Langerhans playing the shots. Slowly, all my Braves are migrating to DC. Rumor has it that Andruw will be patrolling Center Field in DC next season. I can’t wait! Hearing you guys downgrade the guy excites me. He is the presence the Nats need to help them reach the next level. One last question…when are y’all gonna send Chipper and Franky do DC? Face it…although cellar dwellers now, the Nats are the team of the future. I will enjoy watching them have similar success under Kasten as the Braves did for so long. Plus, the Learner family in DC will be a “Ted Turner” type of owner, and not the corporate crap the Braves currently have. Andruw Jones, CF, Washington Nationals. Has a nice ring to it!

My assumptions concerning the Nationals being the team of the future are also not mine…that is also a fact that is recognized by most talking heads of baseball. My assumptions about the demise of Braves baseball because of the sale to Liberty are also not mine…I have read most of that from this very publication. Andruw is without peer defensively. ON offense, he has never become the hitter his talent suggested he could be. He has many holes in his swing, and seems content trying to crush every pitch he swings at. Check his stats with runners in scoring position and you’ll see a less-than-average “clutch” hitter. As much as I like watching him in the outfield, the Braves would be better off without him at $18 mill+ per season.

Well i will say that the Nats do have a positive future. And as you say they have the management to perservere. But if and when Andruw goes to them they have to contend with his sparatic offense and he isnt getting any younger so who is to say that his defense isnt gonna go. I think the Braves should try to resign him but you and i also know that him resigning with the Braves is highly unlikely. He is one of the greatest centerfield defenders of our time but he isnt in his prime anylonger. And i hope that Nats turn it around and have a fine season but still The Braves have to be contended with, no matter how many more games Booby ( i know Bobby) lets them loose.

Larry Jones is white and Dixie loves him.

Andruw Jones is not white and Dixie despises him.

Never forget that the Braves started in Boston, the most racist city in baseball and the only town to turn down a Negro League sensation named Willie Mays.

Bashing non-white center fielders like Mays and Andruw Jones is just part of daily life in Boston, Atlanta, and among Braves choppers.

Any time a batter swings so hard that his back knee buckles and touches or nearly touches the ground, he is way over swinging and trying to launch every ball into orbit instead of simply trying to put wood on the ball. Jones is strong enough to hit the ball out of any park without trying to become a NASA guy. I have lost count the number of times he has done one of these massive swings and buckled his back knee. Joe Simpson commented on that a few games ago. Plus, listening to Stark on ESPN a couple of days ago, he mentioned then that the number of put-outs and balls that Jones gets too in the outfield has dropped every year over the past few years. That corresponds with his gaining and gaining in weight. Even though he does a nice job getting to balls, his speed is down because no matter what you do, you cannot move that much mass at speed to cover large portions of the outfield. When Jones is gone, Frenchy is the CF.

He put himself in the spot when he started campaining he will not give hte Braves another hometown discount. Andruw Jones, has always been overrated, and you can forget Atlanta signing him to a Vernon Wells type of contract. Kiss him good-bye Braves fans, I mean what is the guy batting sixth now. We should cut our losses and since Andruw has stated he wants to play where it is warm. How about Mike Cameron and Scott Linebrink and a starter of our choice for Andruw. Any takers folks I thought so.

Amidst the despair of the Braves losing three in a row to the Phillies, one shining moment seems to have been neglected by all the internet sports reports tonight. That moment was Jarrod Saltamacchia getting his FIRST major league homer! I hope AJC runs a photo of that brief ray of light.
