Move over Harrick, you’ve been ‘McCorkled’
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Jim Harrick Jr. is off the hook. Just when you thought it was impossible for the Georgia Bulldogs to employ a sillier coach than the man who posed the stumper about the worth of a 3-point shot, Todd McCorkle rides to the, er, rescue.
And now this stumper: Why is Todd McCorkle still employed?
McCorkle resigned from coaching women’s golf, but not from the athletics department itself, for a series of suggestive comments he’s said to have made to his players. McCorkle is 44 and should know better, but age is never an inoculation against stupidity. And McCorkle, who’s married to one of his former Arizona players, sounds really, really stupid.
Relationships on a college campus — between teacher and student, man and woman — can sometimes appear to be governed by a hazy set of rules. If even half the allegations levied against McCorkle are true (and the school itself seems to believe they are), there’s no haze here, no gray area. On the contrary, right and wrong are as vivid as purple (the color of the undergarment worn by one of his players, on which the coach is said to have remarked) and blue (don’t even ask).
The university mounted an investigation into McCorkle’s (mis)conduct and found, to quote from legal-affairs director Steve Shewmaker’s May 4 letter, “there is evidence you did engage in inappropriate behavior in violation of the university’s [non-discrimination, anti-harassment] policy.” Shewmaker noted the coach had even admitted to instances of imprudent repartee. And what was the legal department’s recommendation? Immediate termination? The bum’s rush through UGA’s famous Arch?
Nope. One month’s suspension without pay and sensitivity training.
McCorkle subsequently quit as coach but, being luckier than any man deserves, remains on the payroll through next summer. He will, according to AD Damon Evans, “be assigned other duties.” (Social chairman, perhaps?)
Asked Tuesday just what, in such a case, it would take to get fired, Evans thought for a moment and said: “That’s a heck of a question.”
The athletics department’s overriding interest, Evans said, “was the environment in which our student-athletes are involved. Our coach resigned when he met with us [on May 7], and that part of the issue was addressed. … I was satisfied with the resignation of the head coach.”
But why is he still around? Why was Marilou Braswell fired as cheerleading coach in 2004 for being too upfront about her religious beliefs and McCorkle only gets reassigned for being too upfront with his crudity? (Technically, Braswell was sacked for “retaliating against students who report what they believe to be discrimination.” Actually, she read a letter to the squad explaining her position and was dismissed.)
Evans again: “Each issue has its own little intricacies. Our main concern [with McCorkle] was to make sure we do have an appropriate environment for our student-athletes.”
And that’s fine. But why did Georgia allow McCorkle to step down as coach three days before his team was to play in an NCAA regional and say, in an official release, what’s now patently laughable? (McCorkle then: “This will allow me more flexibility in assisting my wife with her LPGA career.”) Why not fire the guy and let him sue for wrongful severance if he dares? (Good luck explaining away that allegation about a Paris Hilton video.)
We chuckle over frat-boy humor, but it’s not so funny when the frat boy is an adult male in a position of power. Imagine you’d entrusted the care of your daughter to such a man. Imagine you’d seen him lose his position but keep his job and his salary. Would you think that’s fair? Or would you think that Georgia, given the chance to make a clear statement, took the weasel route instead?

This guy sounds like a real idiot. I mean he was married to one of his former players from Arizona. You would think he would have learned his lesson by now. Oh and thumbs up to Damon Evans for keeping him on in the department of “unknown affairs.” I’m sure they will be two peas in a pod.

I can’t believe they kept this guy on staff. Jokes aside, I’m sure these ladies have parents/guardians who could’ve put the pressure on Evans to fire this jerk. Comments like that have no place at a university! I would expect more out of UGA.

What you’ve got here is “good old boys” at their worst. Marilou got fired because she wasn’t one of them. Todd McCorkle, on the other hand, was part of the Frank Crumley & Craig White social network. The fact that these guys are all buddies doesn’t say much for the maturity level of the current UGAAA administration, does it? Or how bright they are, to think that open records requests wouldn’t uncover the fact that they were trying to protect their pal by reassigning him instead of firing him.

After reading the above responses I find it laughable that so many think a company should always opt for firing an employee that is ready and willing to resign. The man resigned and in that resignation took all possibilities of lawsuits, regardless of how slight, out of the picture. All of them.
Always amazes me how quick others are to consult on how their neighbor’s yard is groomed while living in a pig sty. There are bigger issues in UGA sports than whether or not the women’s golf coach should have been suspended, fired, or allowed to resign.
Interesting that Bradley carefully left out a certain BOR member’s role in the biggest of UGA guffaws in the last several years though. Very interesting. The BOR member didn’t even get a scolding….

Vision-
The man resigned as head coach, but has been retained in the atheletic dept. An important concern in this case is that the perception by parents of current lady golfers and recruits is that, although he won’t be their coach, he will still be around in an undefined capacity. Also, they feel like their daughters were subjected to sexual harrassment and very innapropiate behaviour and they don’t feel that the University went far enough in their statement on the issue or the action they took. Whether you agree with them or not is not an important issue, it is “how they feel” and that is an important issue, since they are directly involved.
You said that his resignation took away all possibilties of lawsuits. Exactly which Law School did you attend that taught you that? I could bring a lawsuit against you or anyone else that I want to and make up a cause of action. That doesn’t mean I would prevail, but I could do it. The fact that a parent and/or student can choose to do the same thing to UGA is the troubling; they might not win, but the media attention and stink involved would certainly bring an even bigger dark cloud over the Golf team and the University as a whole.
I don’t know about some random Corporation, the specifics would be important to know. But IMO, in this case, Evans should have been more decisive and made it clear that UGA does not take this lightly, and the young ladies would have the complete support of the University to make sure that:
(1) this doesn’t happen again
(2) we want them to feel safe and comfortable around folks charged with leadership roles over them.
An apology wouldn’t hurt either.

Comparing this situation to Clinton and Lewinsky is stupid. If you can’t see the difference in the two, you should sue the hospital where you were born, they obviously disposed of your brain with the afterbirth.

The link between Harrick and McCorkle is Michael Adams. Adams personally hired Harrick and admitted the rapist, Tony Coles, to UGA. The Basketball 101 test made the University a national joke. Women’s golf is just a ripple in comparison. But there is more to this than meets the eye. Adams will throw tons of taxpayer money at a problem that might reflect on him. Evans is just another puppet.

THANK GOD FOR GEORGIA TECH UGA is an embarrassment to the fine state of Georgia. Unfortunately, you can’t be embarrassed or ashamed when you have no class or self respect. From photos of the starting QB spooning the back up QB, Odell, players getting arrested every week, Randy McMichael beating his pregnant wife, Gymnastic coach “casting couch”, Jan Kemp, etc…truly an embarrassment.
Yea, yea, Rueben Houston, and a couple of academically ineligible players who fell through the crack. No one would have known had GT volunteered the information like the class institution that it is. Man it’s tough to be humble when you got UGA all around you. Example, Ole Bill King the blogger is at graduation for his son and all he can think about is football season. Read it yourself…how sad.
No wonder Sonny sent his son to GT…Clean it up Michael Adams!!! People in Tx., Ca. Wa., NY, etc…think we’re all a bunch of backward a$$ redneck hillbillies, because this is all they here about.

This truly indicates how bad we have it with Damon Evans as AD. He fires Braswell and allows McCorkle to remain in the athletic dept. It could be that Evans is himself guilty of some of this similiar activity as McCorkle. Remember, according to some folks in the Athletic Dept. Damon is a “Trash Mouth” around even women employees. I have some friends whose wives are in the Ath. Dept. and have stated this to me.
Obviously Damon is still Michael’s “Boy” and will remain as long as we have Adams in place. Very sad for my University. Funny, I don’t recall these problems in the Dooley era, but then Vince had class and respect from his staff two things seriously lacking in Evans.

there are such things as employment contracts that must be honored unless someone can prove that someone violated the terms of the contract-boorish behavior might be cause for termination or it might not be-i personally would defer to the AD’s lawyers on this specific point rather than make wild generalizations about UGA

I am furious and disgusted as a graduate Of UGA .I have coached high school girls much of my teaching-coaching career and absolutely cannot believe the decision to allow this person to continue at the university as anything, including janitor, if these allegations are true.
A few years ago the cheerleading coach got released for allegedly mixing Christianity with her job too much, making some members uncomfortable and some not getting a fair shake.
Now I am UTTERLY FURIOUS AS A CHRISTIAN! YOU CAN FIRE SOMEONE FOR ALLEGEDLY PUSHING A RELIGION OF LOVE BUT CANNOT FIRE SOMEONE FOR IMPLYING A PRACTICED RELIGION OF DISRESPECT, PORN, AND SEXUAL INNUENDO?
The State Board of Regents needs to re-evaluate the situation at UGA. This is more than the Dooley situation. Too many bad decisions. Itis UGA, NOT UIO- THE UNIVERSITY OF IMAGE ONLY.
UGA slipped in national rankings this year. The current leadership is not doing its job.
If any of my facts are wrong, I apologize. They are based on the online stories from the Atlanta and Athens papers I have read.
Mr. McCorkle and Adams need to go YESTERDAY!

gtr, seriously, furious? furious? You are that vested in personel issues at UGA? On the other, As I recall Braswell did a bit more than try to bring in christianity. I agree with mcdawg, defer to the legal counsel. I dont have any idea of all the details from either one of those but I’d bet they were each unique situations. As far as an AD publically responding to a loaded question like “what does it take to get fired”, come on….what fool would answer that on the fly?
By the way what “dooley issue ” are you talking about?
Are those the standings that the current administration has been responsible for UGA climbing in to the point they can even slip from?
I am no far of Adams but twisting every last little deal to bash him, is sooooooo old now. Im not a giant fan of Evans, but I havent seen any reason to doubt his doing a good job. I am certainly no fan of McCorckle (dad of a daughter here), but I dont think any of us know what really happened in that “resignation” meeting, and one would have to beleive that the entire athletic department, office of president, and top legal counsel, didnt momentarily forget about image, concequences, and ramifications. As it stands this will be an non story as soon as the papers stops stirring it up. I’d say that was handled pretty well.

There is no doubt McCorkle should be gone. It’s pathetic that there even has to be a discussion about it. I mean, the guy married one of his former playes! Is that not some sort of red flag? I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that there was a little bit of pre-graduation “Driving and Putting” going on in that situation…. Ya’ think? On a slightly different issue under the same department, how come nobody ever brings up Gymnastics Coach Suzanne Yoculan’s inappropriate relationship… living with a married man, in a house he bought for her. He’s the filthy rich liquor distributor who nearly got those gymnastics team members in trouble for that trip to New York City. I’d love to see someone do a little ‘digging’ on that one!

The question “what does it take to get fired” which was posed to Damon Evans actually has an easy answer - “when school policy regarding sexual harassment is violated”. What’s so hard about an answer like that? The only thing I can think of is that the schools investigation into this issue showed that there was a violation of school policy yet there was no termination. This situation stinks and UGA looks very foolish, but the school appears to be very fortunate that lawsuits didn’t ensue. They’d likely lose big.
Also, it is easy to make a comparison between the schools handling of this case and the firing of the cheerleading coach a few years ago. I don’t remember seeing any hard evidence that this coach made christianity any kind of litmus test for participation on her squad. As I remember it was all about perception and feelings.

I’m sure it’s too impossible to believe that 3 of 6 girls (3 best friends) on the team could have lied or stretched the truth to get back at their coach for berating one of them for being disrespectful.
