Falcons coddling Vick too much

Terence Moore

Three minutes and 15 seconds into Michael Vick’s only public discourse since the controversy began over his possible role in illegal dogfighting, his omnipresent Big Brothers from the Falcons’ public relations department ended the questioning.

No surprise there.

Neither is this when it comes to the handling of Vick by those with Falcons ownership and management: They still don’t get it. They’ve contributed to Vick spending his six NFL seasons evolving from a maturing star into a pampered knucklehead.

Then again, given the Falcons’ three-monkey approach for the longest time regarding Vick (see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil), he hadn’t a reason to stop his silliness. He knew Big Brother would protect him, along with owner Arthur Blank, general manager Rich McKay and a slew of others in the Falcons organization who consistently said little or nothing after all of those other Vick controversies just within the last few months.

In other words, Blank is taking revisionist history to the extreme. He said last week that neither he nor others with the Falcons hierarchy have coddled Vick, but the quarterback has had more than a few social visits to the owner’s Buckhead home. Not only that, Vick has played video games with Blank’s kids. There also was that infamous day when the broken-legged quarterback was pushed along the sideline in a wheelchair by the smiling owner.

Still, regarding the latest Vick controversy, Blank told the AJC last week that he couldn’t have been more stern talking to Vick about the consequences of his actions.

So where was such a bold and public reprimand by Blank or any other Falcons officials after that water-bottle fiasco? And the stiffing of those U.S. congressmen in Washington? And the one-fingered salute to booing fans after a home game? And the herpes stuff involving Ron Mexico? And the stolen Rolex (not his, by the way) at the security gate of the Atlanta airport?

If you’re keeping score, those with Falcons ownership and management became Mazaru (the Japanese monkey who covers his mouth) after the congressmen thing and the obscene gesture thing. They issued brief statements that said nothing worth repeating after the Rolex thing and the Ron Mexico thing.

Following the water-bottle thing, McKay said he had a “stressful” meeting with Vick. It’s just that two months after the case was dropped, McKay said he didn’t discuss the contents of the bottle during that meeting. Sort of an important thing to talk about, don’t you think?

Then came Blank’s “stern” meeting with Vick over this dogfighting thing, mostly because Blank hadn’t a choice. He knows the deal with Roger Goodell. After the ruthless NFL commissioner suspended Pacman Jones for a season and Chris Henry for eight games, Goodell said he’ll also punish teams in the future for the misdeeds of their knuckleheads.

That means this Vick deal won’t end pretty, and the Falcons have nobody to blame but themselves. Among other things, if they were as obsessed with trying to shield their quarterback from his posse as they were from the media, they wouldn’t be this close to joining Vick by getting sacked by Goodell.

Consider this: Brett Favre, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Donovan McNabb join Vick as the NFL’s other high-profile quarterbacks. Vick is the only one among the five whose team requires at least one Big Brother in the room whenever he is conducting an interview of any kind.

All these quarterbacks have regularly scheduled media sessions, including Vick, but can be available when approached by their lockers. Vick is the only one with a Big Brother assigned to him in the locker room at all times, just in case somebody has the audacity to try to ask him a question.

There was a different Vick under Dan Reeves, the Falcons’ coach until late in the 2003 season. He hired somebody to work with Vick’s diction, and he required that Vick deal with the media like Favre, Brady and the rest. The idea was to make Vick realize he was the face of the franchise, which meant he had responsibilities — such as interacting with reporters, without having somebody holding his hand and making sure he wasn’t asked something that ownership or management didn’t like.

Then Reeves was fired. Then the Falcons added Big Brothers to Vick, and then they employed their three-monkey approach, and you know the rest.

Flowery Branch officially is a zoo.

Try this on for size:

If Vick was released from the Falcons- HE WOULD BE IN PRISON IN A YEAR !! If not sooner !!

With his actions, he would be wearing stripes instead of that Falcons Jersey !!

Peet that

Why is this guy treated so well anyway? What’s he ever REALLY done for the Falcons? All they ever seem to have is the ‘hope’ of a great season. Where’s the championship? Where’s the domination? Vick is severely overrated.

Vick is being coddled because the alternative would be an embarassment to the organization. At least this way they limit his negative impact.

Blank can partly thank himself for Vick’s actions. Had he not fired Dan Reeves Vick would have been all everything by now. He would have had the same system for how many years? Mora just didn’t have the respect or pedigree that Reeves had/ has. Let’s hope Petrino does.

Weak minded morons become infatuated with these arrogant, greedy, knuckleheads. Then the greedy coaches & owners protect the morons after they do the crimes.

This is a fact-if sports fans would quit supporting these jerks and owners, as I did BY NOT RENEWING MY SEASON TICKETS, they would get off their high horses and common families could afford tickets!!!!

Why do you folks support and encourage these greedy arrogant basturds?????

Terence,

You are still not very bright. please don’t compare interviews with vick from the likes of Favre, Manning, and Brady. He cannot speak or do anything without being an idiot. He has to have someone by his side. He is very immature and not very smart with his money. sold a house with the value of 750,000 for half the price. Stupid.

Mike has drug paraphenalia at the airport. Mike is not responsible, Arthur is.

Mike blows off US Congress. Mike is not responsible, Arthur is.

Mike gives home crowd who funds his exorbitant salary the finger. Mike is not responsible, Arthur is.

Mike has illegal dog fighting at his house. Mike’s responsibility? Nope, that miscreant Arthur again!

Whatever happened to personal responsibility?

its almost to a point were vick has to go. not quite but almost. there is nothing else talked about regarding the falcons except vick good or bad (not much good). this is a team game, we have a new coach, we have a new wr, we have new pieces all over the field and all thats ever talked about is vick. i have supported the guy thus far and will continue to do so as long as he is a falcon or not convicted of dog fighting but at what point do you cut your loses and move on. as mentioned this is a monumental year for mr. vick and perhaps his last chance in atl to prove to us that he is worth it all, i hope he is but i’m nowhere near convinced.

Go Falcons!!! I can’t wait to just talk football…this stuff is getting old.

I don’t know Michael Vick more than any of the rest of you and I don’t have any plans of acting like I do. I’ll cast judgement on his performance on the field; not his personal life.

If he’s found guilty of something, he should be punished by those in charge. Until then, I’m going to focus on football and hope the whole team is working hard and preparing to take us to the promise land.

As I said before, Go Falcons!!!

Amen Terrence. Please tell me why Mike Vick is referred to as an NFL “star”. His stats don’t reflect it, his actions don’t reflect it, when is the “new” going to wear off? When is next season going to be too late? Arthur Blank loves the reflected glory, and until that stops he won’t stop Michael Vick. I do believe that Mr. Blank may be getting tired of looking like a buffoon, I just don’t know how many “stern warnings” from him it will take to straighten Vick out. My guess is Mr. Gooddells will be more forceful and in terms even Vick can understand. I look forward to to the day when I can be proud of my hometown team again, unfortunately I don’t believe that day will come until Mr. Vick is no longer a part of the team.

Judge not lest ye be judged. We all make choices. Some good, some not so good. I am an ATL sports fan(all sports, not just pick and choose whose winning) and I believe this year will be the crossroads for Mr Vick. He has the tools to be awesome, but he has to be in the proper mindset and have the proper attitude. That comes from within. No one can give you that. He has a God-given talent and it seems sometimes he is not making the proper choices. I wish him well this year because it may be his last in a Falcons uniform.

It seems like Terrence Moore’s biggest issue with Vick is his inaccessibility to the media. I doubt there is a NFL rule requiring unmonitored accessibility to players prior, during, and after official team meetings. Furthermore, I doubt the NFL has a rule forcing players to answer all reporter questions.

Owners/executives typically curb what employees/players can and cannot say to the media. It’s part of the working world, so Terrence Moore and the rest of the AJC shouldn’t be surprised when the Atlanta Falcons organization limit Michael Vick’s interaction with the media or restrict question topics. Good or bad, employers have this right and the rules don’t change because Vick is a “public figure”. In other words, you shouldn’t criticize Vick for his inability or his desire to talk with the media.

Additionally, it really doesn’t matter if Michael Vick visits Arthur Blank’s home, plays videogames with Blank’s children, or even gets pushed in a wheelchair by Blank. I imagine Vick is fully away of the owner / player hierarchy and he knows that nothing is truly guaranteed in the NFL and that his relationship with the Falcons can be cut at Blank’s discretion.

Lastly, Dan Reeves may have been a good coach, but he wasn’t a great Falcons coach. He was coach for seven years, from 1996 through 2003; going 51 – 60 and he only had two winning seasons. Looking at these numbers, there is no evidence that Vick or the Falcons would be any better than they are now.

Terrence, I rarely call for another Black man to lose his means for generating income, but you have finally crossed the line. You need to resign before I get mad enough to start a campaign to have you fired.

You should be ashamed of yourself for ever writing such and intellectually dishonest piece of drivel like this. It certainly isn’t journalism and if it is supposed to be an opinion, I realize that everyone has one, but uninformed and deceitful opinions should be kept to yourself. You have callously continued to attack and denigrate a professional Black athlete, without one shred of rational thought process to your position. You have been cavalier with the truth, and even though you don’t specifically accuse Mike Vick of Criminal behavior, you continue to imply and insinuate that he should be vilified for actions that you are well aware he did not do. You have to be aware that you are doing this and the only thing that can explain it would be your desire to build yourself up by tearing this young Black man down. Do you really think you will score any brownie points with the good white folks here in Atlanta because you help them attack the Black quarterback? Check your history, white folks just used house negroes, they never liked them. You should know better, but you house negroes never do. You should be ashamed of yourself, but you house negroes never are.

True, we shouldn’t judge others, but it doesn’t seem like Vick gets why he is bad news based on the interviews he has given. He says all the right things, but it comes across as self-serving and rehearsed. He is sorry for sure, but only because he is in trouble. He doesn’t seem to understand why he is trouble other than it is the fault of all the people around him and it is going to be all better when he associates with nice people. There is no acceptance of personal accountability and responsibility. Vick and the press make it sound like the bad crowd showed up at his house one day. Don’t most people choose with whom they associate? Don’t most people associate with folks with whom they feel comfortable? Why is Vick any different? You can’t blame all your problems on the crowd with whom you associate. Just ask any teenager.

The reality is that while Vick is a great athlete, he’s not a player you can build a franchise (or for that matter an offense) around.

The Falcons (and most recently Blank as well) have wasted too much time trying to make a leader out of an individual that doesn’t have the intelligence nor the heart for the role.

Put him in a secondary role - make him a flexback with some passing opportunities. If he’s destined to be a team leader then he will rise to the occasion through his actions.

The reason Blank puts up with all of Mike’s questionable actions, is only because he puts fans on the seats. And the bottom line, which is money, is the only thing that matters. He could care less about championships or having a good ol’ boy as the face of the franchise. The truth is that the Falcons will never get anywhere with Mike under center. And for all you guys that think that all those people that think everyone hates on Mike because he’s black, are plain old ignorant. Take a look at all the other starting QB’s in the league. Can you name one that has gotten into any “questionable” situations as Mike has? Super Star he’s not. Exceptional athletic ability, yes. But, I’ll take a good solid QB that can’t run but will win me championships over Mike any anytime. The sooner all of you Falcons fan realize that you are just loosing time with this knuckelhead and stop supporting a franchise that gave a running back, he’s no QB, 130 mil. and has no idea what is like to act professional and respectful of the fans that pay him that big salary that he doesn’t deserve, the better you will feel.

Come on Terrence, if the Falcons were not coddling Michael Vick, you would be the first person to provide an example of a non African-American player that received preferential treatment (coddling) and alleging discriminatory treatment. Michael is recieving the treatment that any highly paid franchise player of any NFL team would.

Your statement that the Falcons are at fault should this situation not end well is ridiculous. The Falcons are doing their best to support Michael and make the best of a bad situation. Michael is a grown man and is responsible for his own actions. I don’t see any Falcon involvement in Michael’s decision to; take a “water bottle” with a foreign substance through airport security, miss a political meeting or allegedly be involved in dog fighting. Michael needs to grow up and be held accountable. Let’s not deflect blame to the Falcons for Michael’s poor choices.

By Coddling?

May 15, 2007 12:33 PM | Link to this

Someone please explain the coddling of MV7? Is it coddling to never draft a significant offensive lineman since you drafted a QB with the first pick? Especially when the O-line was horrible before he hit the field. The Falcons QBs are well known for their many concussions over the years. Is it coddling when you have the smallest and most ineffective pass blocking O-line in the conference with arguably the best D-Lines in the league? Is it coddling to have your QB know a play is not going to work and only be able to change the direction and not audible into something that protects the team? And then to have the coach not come out and take responsibility for the plays not working…and the QB takes the blame.

Sounds like coddling to me…

I don’t understand your question. Where did I imply anything about Vick’s family or his assoicates for that matter? It is Vick, the press, and the Falcons laying the blame elsewhere. As far as we know the friends/family are saints and it is Vicks leading them to temptation and not the other way around. Vick sure has shown much loyalty to his friends or his family most of whom have been thrown under the bus already.

I agree with Mr. Moore’s article. I think the Falcon’s are coddling Vick. I also agree with some of the earlier comments made here. Vick should not be persecuted for things he hasn’t been convicted or found guilty of. However, he should be embarrassed for something everyone knows he has done. Only $10,000 to the families of the shooting victims at his university?! And the Falcons laud this as if this is some kind of grand gesture. With the kind of money he makes from salary and endorsements, that should be embarassing!

Agree w/ premise of your article, Terrence. Bottom-line, Michael Vick is just not a grown-up. Mentally/Socially Vick is at the level of an 18yr old. Vick just makes poor decision after poor decision and does not seem to learn from them. Vick does need to be surrounded by a team of people to help him make decisions because, unfortunately Vick cannot handle on his own.

Who is Michael Vick’s agent? why is Vick’s agent not more involved. Vick needs a team of people to watch him and monitor his daily occurences. Vick has shown that he deserves to be treated like a child - so, somebody needs to put together a team and do just that!

Exodus, what do you think Michael Vick is? Do you think he is standing proud for the black man. Plays games with the owner’s children, and people think that is a good relationship. It reminds me of “The Toy” with Jackie Gleason and Richard Pryor and believe me that is what Mike Vick is to Arthur Blank, not an equal from whom you would demand a certain standard of conduct, but a token that can buy him fame and recognition over that he achieved on his own. Is no one allow to make a comment about another black without being personally vilified. Not all blacks are good people, any more than all white people are good people.

KB I did check my stats and passing percentage is 58.4, and “MICK”, I guess you know him so well you are the only one to call him that, has thrown 2 more interceptions than touchdown passes. A wonderfully talented athlete yes, a great quarterback, no.

If you want to know why fans are upset at Michael it is not because he is black. He is about to be suspended. That is almost certain at this point. I am thinking at least several games for just his association with this story. (Packman was not even convicted when he was suspended). If you wanna cry race, I am white but was a Vick supporter. I did not believe Schaub was the answer and I was looking forward to see Vick this year under Petrino. It now looks like we will see J. Harrington as our starter. Despite if he did or did not involve himself in dog fighting, he did own that house, where dog fighting was going on. Get your head outta yer a#$% Mike.

OK - let’s see. He’s a role model for who? A list of questionable situations - and no - there isn’t a conviction yet - because none are considered crimes - yet. It appears that at least AirTran has made the right decision to keep his face and name out of their ads & off billboards. As an Atlanta native - I’ve never been more embarrassed by an individual than by Michael Vick. When traveling to other states and the conversation of football comes up - it is usually followed by a big laugh when I tell people that I am from Atlanta. And, shortly following the laugh is some comment about our “professional” football player - Michael Vick. I’m waiting for the Falcons to have a professional quarterback. For me - Vick’s chances have come and gone. Next!…

You people are crazy…. Everyone in the entire NFL wants Vick except for ATL…its like the city is gunning for him to get into trouble and fail… so he’s made some mistakes, who hasnt. Does that mean we should throw him to the “dogs”? Our loyalty should be to the falcons and to whom they’ve hired, not to those who would love to see someone like Michael Vick in jail. The law say innocent until proven guilty…and we should honor that. Besides Vick is the “Falcons”..get some of those receivers to catch the damn ball….

Patrick…fans may be upset at the thought of suspension but you would have to be dumb as a rock to think that fans just became upset with Vick. He’s been going through this his entire career. It would be different if the negativity just started. And if you think he’s going to be suspended for owning the house in another state that he doesn’t even live in, how long do you think Patrick Kerney’s suspension will be since there was a RAPE at his home…that he lives in…while he was there…sleeping, we think? Maybe a lifetime ban? Otherwise, it starts to look like a double standard…

If Vick needs his hand held because they don’t consider him very bright or able to make the right decision, then why keep him as a QB, a job that requires bright decisions made on the fly?

He either can think for himself or he can’t. If he cannot, then make him a linebacker!

Heck, he makes Forrest Gump look like a genius…

I think the Falcons traded the wrong QB, and they will get their heads handed to them the first game he plays against his former team.

Then you find out your quarterback is a miscreant, a spoiled brat, a certified underachiever, and a miscast world-class athlete playing the part of LEADER of your team.

Yeah, if I was McKay and Blank, I’d sweep it under the rug too. They made their bed, and now they’re laying in it. Vick is Vick. You bought it, it was broken in the character department from day one, you live with it. Sorry Atlanta.

I sometimes cut against the grain, but I wish MVick had been drafted elsewhere. That said, he’s our quarterback for this year. If the Falcons have any chance of having a winning team, MVick will have to be in good form. The Falcons are the blame for him being here, when he should have gone to a team who could used his talents properly. I will always believe he could have been a Hall of Fame receiver with his speed and escapability. The problem is, that’s not the most important characteristics of a quality quarterback.

Maybe they keep someone around him because he is SUPPOSED to be the face of a franchise but can’t even put together sentences. Hmm Hmm, It would seem that a vicarious perpetration of this unfortunate situation has fallen on the shoulders of young Mr. Vick. Mr. Vick is obviously the victim of a well planned attack of the white conservative media. Being at an extremely disadvantaged position in the American social structure, Mr. Vick cannot be held accountable for his actions. He is still dealing with feeling of both anger and confusion, seeing the white dominated culture of Virginia rob him of every legitimate opportunity to be successful in life. This white culture has deprived this young hero of the opportunity to earn a fair salary. They have robbed him of the very conscience necessary to abstain from the wiles of an evil society. Whitey pushed Michael down his whole life. And then Whitey lures him up, using tools of privilege like money, and drugs, and lascivious women…. only to pull these things away like a cruel joke, as Lucy always moved the ball before Charlie Brown could kick it. As chairman of the Rainblow coalition, I call upon the NFL, the attorney general of Virginia, and the young woman infected with the diseases of a young hero’s lustful loins, to STAND UP. STAND UP, I TELL YOU, YOU MUST STAND UP! Stand up and tell the world that Michael Vick wears a named that must have been a historical utterance of prophetic invention. For Vick is truly a victim. Vick is a scapegoat for the white ecosystem of nurturing the lackadaisical tolerance to a vial perpetration of untold discrepancy against a pure and spotless young hero. Vick is a victim. Rev. Al Sharpton and I have agreed to represent Mr. Vick in all public appearances, comment, and engagements. Together, we can prove to the world that it matters not what’s in the bottle, it matter’s not what’s in your family’s house, it matters not what road this man may travel. He’s a victim; he’s not accountable for his life. It’s all Whitey’s fault. America needs Michael Vick!

Think about for a second our defense was the trouble spot for the entire year (Hartwell and Abraham) We payed those guys what whe paid Vick and they didnt see half the action. Vick is in the hall of fame and youy cant change that. No wonder we have never won squat because the fans a fickle and fairweather. It amazes me how people always want to point fingers at others wrong. What do you have in your closet? Leave Mike alone. I do not know of a single person on the planet that has not made mistakes. The only difference between Mike and many of us is that he is in the public eye and we are not. Our wrongs (mistakes) are not dragged through the media. I wonder if our wrongs (mistakes) were dragged through the media what would we find out about the average guy? - hmmm. The Falcons have invested alot in Mike. It is their job and their duty to make sure their investnment pays off. Sure he has made mistakes, but he can turn it around. Mike I am rooting for you. I hope you have a Fantastic year with the Falcons. I hope you understand what is at stake and make the appropiate changes. Do your thang and prove the doubters wrong.

And one more thing. It amazes me too how people always want to distrubute the funds of rich people. So, Mike gave $10,000 to VA Tech. Obviously that is what he wanted to give. The public does not detemine what a person should give just because they have money. Is it your money? - LOL

It’s amazing that most people hating on michael takes personal shots. Let’s look at his winning percentage compared to other(traditional quarterbacks) in the league right now. Brenda said michael was a thug and had a ghetto mentality. Where was this outrage when Bobby Cox beat up his wife, Chipper Jones made babies from waitress at hooters, Patrick Kernay allowing strange men into his house late at night and allowed his roommate to get raped. Some of the same people hating on Vick see nothing wrong with the small number of black coaches in college football(yes, we’re in the south)SEC and ACC. 116 division 1-A schools and 4 black coaches. PERIOD, Michael has not be convicted of NOTHING. When a rich black athlete goes thru the court systems and is not convicted, it’s a crime. Haha - if you had stated on thing in your rant that was based on fact, more people might pay attention to what you have to say. Abraham and Hartwell did not make half of what Vick makes. On what do you base you statement that Atlanta has had only one winning season. I know they went to the Super Bowl at least once, and have been in the payoffs several times. If you are referring to the time period when Michael Vick has been here, you just made everyone else’s point. On what basis would Mike Vick get into the Hall of Fame. For his rushing yards. We have several people on the team paid to run, we’ve got one person on the team paid to thrown the ball. If Mike Vick is rushing for so many yards, he is not doing his job, and he is preventing someone else from doing their’s. We did have winning seasons under Chris Chandler and no one ever said Jeff George was a great quarterback. He like Mike Vick was athletically talented but too smug and too lazy to work. And to all of you who say don’t judge someone else, since I have never had an STD, never been stopped at airport gate for not only being stupid and trying to bring on an item that there are 100 signs saying you can’t bring on board, but also my pot stash, never shot a bird at the people who pay my salary, always managed to plan ahead to make it to important meetings and certainly have never engaged the barbarism of dog fighting, yeah, I think I can do a little judging, thank you very much.

Oh but wait, you can’t do that because the TELEVISION is your baby sitter. You make me sick. If it was not Vick it would be something else. You people have no right to pass judgement on anyone. Football is a game, that’s all. In the grand scheme of things it’s hardly important. We have a war going on, for Pete’s sake. Those of you who are criticizing Atlanta fans for their lack of loyalty and defending this thug are the epitome of what is wrong with American society. I bet you would spend every last dime you own to buy your season tickets. Instead of spending your Sundays with your families, you’re downing Miller Genuine Drafts with your buddies at the Dome. Michael Vick didn’t just make a few minor mistakes. He flaunted the law. Theft, drug use and dog fighting are all illegal activities. It’s time for the Falcons to turn him loose before he causes any more damage to the organization and this city. Professional athletes are not above the law, no matter how much you pitiful people want to idolize them. Let this idiot face the music like any other common criminal.

Vick has been overrated for years. He’s a mediocre, pot-smoking, animal abusing thug-quarterback with an attitude that he’s God’s gift to football. Every time you see him in an interview he looks stoned…if the NFL doesn’t require drug tests, they should. Why is Blank supporting animal abusers anyway (there was another Falcon accused of killing his girlfriend’s dog recently)? I’m making my statement by never buying another Falcon football ticket or Falcon merchandise, or at least until Blank sells the team or takes a stand against these thugs. If everyone who felt the same way would stop supporting these low-life players, the owners would take notice.

Yes, a race issue does always come up when a Vick incident occurs because people start throwing him under the bus before all the facts are there and when he is cleared for certain, oh its a cover-up. What are people supposed to think? It’s not going to matter if Vick is cleared of the current charges because everyone will believe it is a cover up. He can’t win for losing and that is why race is brought up. How many people on here would take back things you said if Vick is cleared of any wrong doing?

The world must be coming to an end as I find myself agreeing with Mr. Moore for the first time in my life. Arthur Blank must accept responsibility for placing Michael a notch ahead of all players/coaches/front office and repeating (like a trained parrot) whatever lame excuses Michael came up with. Ask me if I would rather have Michael or Peyton Manning.. If only we hadn’t have traded Brett Favre….

Brenda…Good try but some of us really know Falcons history. And the reality is that we went to the playoffs twice in the 80s and 3 times in the 90s. That’s 5 times in 20 years so cool it with the “Falcons have been to the playoffs several times” cry. And we only had ONE winning season under Chris Chandelier so maybe you don’t know as much as you thought. Need I continue or would you rather revise your statements…

If convicted, and the Falcons keep Mike Vick on the team, I will no longer be a Falcon fan until Vick is gone. I could never cheer for a team or a player that would harm, or have knowledge of dogs being forced to fight to stay alive. I have let allot of the other stuff slide, I can not bury my head in the sand any longer. I am disgusted and embarrassed that Mike Vick has single handedly given the Atlanta Falcons the biggest black eye in its 40+ year history

Playing in the NFL is a privelage, a well paid one too. From the very beginning, Vick has thumbed his nose at authority. There are rules that players have to abide by. They are not all “law of the land” but negotiated between owners and a high powered union. Vick decided that he was going to wear his socks like he wanted to even if it cost him as much as he donated to Va Tech in fines. Same thing with his cleats. These are just small things, but symptomatic of the real issue. He has no regard for the law or even the respect to follow the rules of the league. He should feel fortunate to have the ability and opportunity that he has, but instead, he has continually led by dissention. I don’t care about what he may donate to anyone, but if he is bound and determined make damn sure there is a press release to help his image, it looks like he would give more than it costs him to wear a friggin pair of socks that are against the rules.

I am disappointed in Michael Vick’s behavior. He is very talented and capable of great feats of athleticism, but he has harmed his personal reputation and now that of the Atlanta Falcons. My guess is that Michael Vick will be to the Falcons what Dominique Wilkins was to the Atlanta Hawks; a very talented athlete capable of great athletic feats, but he won’t bring a championship home to Atlanta.

Now I would be a fool if I were on here taking up for the stupid things that Jamaal Lewis did and got convicted of, and I personally know him, but he did some retarded stuff that almost ended his career. Now if Mike Vick is convicted of any wrong doing, I will not apologize for defending until he was found guilty, but I will join the bandwagon of people wanting him out of Atlanta. Until then, I stand by my defense. What about this does not make any sense? If you want to talk about his performance on the field, then fine, but until he is found guilty of something, stop judging him.

You’re right, AFS, I rarely spend my time on sports blogs, but I couldn’t resist the chance to give a reality check to people like you who would rather see the entire city embarrassed so that you can escape your meaningless life for a few hours on Sunday. I don’t care if Michael Vick was as white as snow, he’s still a thug. You know the saying, “If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck.” He may never be convicted because his handlers will shelter him from the law. But he’s a black eye to Atlanta just the same.

And by the way, I haven’t signed up for the military, as I don’t support this war, and it would be a waste of my education. I just thought it was worth considering that there are more important things than a game in this world.

Are you volunteering to fight overseas? I feel obliged to inform you that your enrollment in the military could interfere with your football watchin’. That, and you didn’t vote for that white devil, George W. Perhaps we can send Vick to Iraq? I think he would be the perfect person to carry the grenades.

Kjohn - thanks for your reply to my e-mail and your giving me your extensive knowledge of the Falcons history. However, it is not correct. The Falcons have made the playoffs seven (7) times: 1978, 1980, 1991, 1995, 1998, 2002 and 2004. While even the five (5) times you referenced would qualify as several, I believe seven definitely does. Yes, we only had one winning year with Chris Chandler, I think it is important to note it is the one that took us to the Super Bowl. So when correcting someone else’s stats, please be sure your’s are right.

Hey Slick,

At this point it’s not about winning or losing. Its about who do you want your kids to be like? I don’t want my kids to be like Mike. My hero other than my father was Steve Bartkowski. A gem of a player on bad teams. He never in public bad mouthed his team. He never flipped off the fans. He worked hard, played hard, but will never be in the NFL Hall of Fame. It’s a darn shame. Mike Vick should look at Bartkowski’s past, and should try and be like him. I have been a Falcon Fan, longer than you have been alive. Even back in the day when the Falcons could only win 3 to 4 games a year, I was proud to be a Falcon Fan. Now, I have never been more embarrassed to be a Falcon fan.

Is their any apathy for the fact that he is a human being that is still young who is entitiled for those reasons alone to make mistakes. Of course, I want him to have a positive profile but I bet if anyone of us had a camera down our throat everyday people are bound to catch some screw-ups and worse. Quit making excuses for Vick. He is a thug and so is his brother. Everywhere he goes, something bad happens (just like Pac-Man) and the Falcons cover it up cause they don’t wanna look like idiots after signing him to over a hundred million dollars. They will never trade him and the rest of us here in ATL are gonna have to except the fact that we are the gutless clowns of the NFL. There is some hope however. Once Vick is not able to run anymore he will be useless to us because he sure as hell can’t throw worth a darn. Arm strength does not equal accuracy.

If you have issues with his money get a successful business, if you have issue with his age, don’t buy a ticket, if you have a problem with his nationality, and then don’t buy a ticket. If you can’t get an interview with the Quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons. Give up your job of being an interviewer and push all that stuff to the side and report on things that only a reporter in Atlanta can get. That does not include the hearsay like other reports have done and out-scooped the AJC. Just give us information on the Atlanta Falcons to show that the AJC supports the Falcons. I’m sure you burned that bridge a long time ago Terrance. We don’t hold your past transgressions of not being able to have a sit-down interview with one of the premier Quarterback on a Premier Team of the Atlanta Falcons against You (that’s what’s know as a performance issue). Let’s put that at the end of you column for every articles that you write…Terrance was known for not being able to get and Interview from one of the NFL’s High-Profile Quarterback in the League Michael Vick and his job is to interview athletes in the Atlanta area. To be a good leader one must look the part. That means dressing for business and keeping ones hair groomed and cut by a professional barber.

Many children and young athletes look at the leadership provided by star athletes as a way of behavior.

(Uncle Tom) Moore,

You are such an indiot. Dan Reeves was/is the worst coach ever. He could not win with John Elway. After Reeves left the Bronco won 2 Superbowls. Dan Reeves traded for Peerless Price. Dan Reeves drafted TJ Duckett. Dan Reeves was washed up as a player and even worse as a coach. The Mora Family made a stupid remark of Vick being a coach killer. Mora Sr. had Peyton Manning and could not win. What does that say about his coaching skills.

As for you comparing Vick to Favre. Do you remember Favre was addicted to Drugs and went to rehab. Favre was also an alcohol and went to rehab. Favres family (sister in a drive by shooting, brother accused of dealing drugs) has done a lot more illegal. things than the Vick family.

But, once again Uncle Tom Moore wishes to down the black man.

Water bottle, dog fighting, throwing the bird: NO ONE was injured or hurt

Why don’t you write about a rape @ Patrick Kearney’s home, while he was at home. This is a crime and why are you not writing about this.

Oh and by the way, you left out the 1982 playoff appearance which makes 8 playoff seasons in the last 30 years. Maybe you consider that several but with regards to all NFL franchises…that’s bad. And you don’t have to thank me but you’re welcome anyway. The fact that Vick has led the Falcons to the playoffs 2 times in 67 games (just over 4 and a half seasons as a starter) means he’s already statistically better than any other Falcon QB with regards to getting to the playoffs. And we’ve already been on TV more times in the last 6 seasons than we were during the entire 90s era.

Remember, reading is FUNDAMENTAL.

There is a lot of hating going on in the ATL. Mike Vick is going to show all of you gainsayers how good he is this year. What these ignorant people don’t realize is that Greg Knapp was a horrible offensive coordinator. Vick will do just fine under Petrino..

Whats crazy is people say hes a thug!! A 100 million dollar thug? Your more of thug than he is or is it if he doesnt adhere to what you think a quarter back should look like? It scares me to think that if I dont dress like you in your mind Im labeled a thug! I hate the way people put labels on things the have no knowladge of. Just a closet racisit scared to say all black men are thugs and pot smokers even though you have no proof of it you just go by what your narrow mind tells you and proclaim it to be true. This isnt about foot ball at all its about the perception of black people to white people and no matter how much money you get or what level sucess you acheive to them you just a N*A!!! Black Power!!!

Michael Vick is a product of the organization. Most of the star professional athletes who have huge multi million dollar contracts are actually in the land of make believe. Mad money for a game, it is literally like hitting the lottery. If they are not mentored, groomed, and held to high expectations by the organization outside of the stadium, this is what you will get. Most people are jealous and envious because he makes more money than the average Joe will ever see. He is an athlete, not a role model. He is in Atlanta to play football, and that’s why they protect him. He is an investment, this is about business, not humanity. Maybe someone should have added these things in his contract, but they didn’t! Also, he is the most exciting quarterback in football right now and has been for several years. Peyton Manning is the son of a professional football quarterback, he grew up living the life Michael Vick now enjoys, it does make a difference. There is no need for excuses however, he is still young but he needs to become more responsible and mature. These things normally take time, which none of us have any control over. Mora was a bad influence (good coach), once during a game he sniffed one of those strong wake up pills for players who have been dazed, that was crazy!!!

Here goes the bottom line: If Mike gets convicted of anything, he will more than likely have a very long suspension, then Mr. Blank will probably seriously think about getting rid of him. If he doesn’t get convicted of anything and Mike keeps putting butts in the seats, and he is the reason right now the dome is sold out, then he is here to say. You can thank all us thugs for purchasing the tickets, so if you don’t keep your season tickets, guess what, another thug is going to snatch them up. Isn’t that lovely? Believe me, money is going to be the bottom line. Mr. Blank doesn’t ready dive a crap about your silly opinions as long as he is making money. When are you people going to understand that. So if you want Mike gone, hurt Mr. Blank in the pockets, but wait, thugs stick together so we will make sure the seats in the dome are full. PERIOD!

Mr. Moore - considering you have been one of Mr. Vick’s biggest enablers, glad to see you put out this column.

Kjohn - Hope you’re referring to delivering pizza when you talk about Dominos. As I stated the Falcons reached the playoffs in 1978, 1980, 1991, 1995, 1998, 2002 and 2004, which is seven times. Their record was 6-10 in 1992. If they played a playoff game in 1992 it would have been for the 2001 season. Yes, reading is fundamental, but so is counting. And I don’t know about you, but I don’t enjoy getting beat more times on national TV.
