The Tuesday Countdown

Jeff Schultz

10: May Day. It’s not even mini-camp yet and the Falcons’ defensive already has lost two starters (Demorrio Williams and Rod Coleman) and could be ready to chuck another (Grady Jackson). So much for that post-draft afterglow.

9: Coleman got off the road, which made the world a better place. But he ripped a quad while jetskiiing. That’s sort of a big injury for a defensive tackle. Even if he comes back during the season, he won’t really be back. He’s toast. So is Williams. His torn pecs will prevent him from lifting weights and, even after healing, prevent him from immediately using his arm in tackles and pass-rush situations.

8: So how do you feel about now if you’re Keith Brooking? Poor guy just got moved back to middle linebacker, which he didn’t want in the first place. Now he’s lost his wingman (Williams) and possibly the slabs of beef in front of him. Is it too late to file retirement papers.

7: Rod Coleman’s backup: Jonathan Babineaux. Waiter, check?

6: The good news is that Michael Vick and the offense is stable. They can just outscore everybody. Say, have you seen my pet rabbit, Harvey?

5: Whether it’s fair or not, sports stars are defined by what they do in the post-season. Dirk Nowitzki may not want to read his definition about now.

4: Michael Gearon Jr., one of the Hawks’ owners, says the team might have won between “36 and 46 games” if not for injuries. Great. That should rally the troops.

3: More Hawks News! What does it mean that owners and Billy Knight will not determine coach Mike Woodson’s future until after the draft lottery? So if the Hawks get two really good picks, they fire Woodson because then they can lure a better coach? Look, you either think Woodson can coach or you don’t. Make a decision. This front office makes Charlie Brown look like a Type-A personality.

2: Tony LaRussa has been short with reporters and sensitive to reports about Josh Hancock drinking before he was killed in a car accident. But can LaRussa, who himself was arrested for DUI recently, be objective on this subject?

1: R. Kelly has written a song for Virginia Tech. I’m assuming it won’t rival, “Feelin’ on Yo Booty,” or have anything to do with having sex with a 14-year-old.

Hi Y’all! I think ol’ Gravy Jackson has been hitting that chicken fried steak with extra gravy a little too hard. Been hearing we’re still talking to Ian Scott. Welcome to the South, big fella.

Jeff Schultz, I still have Mike Woodson’s famous quote tacked to my wall of shame. You remember it, don’t you? “I’m not concerned about our record. Records are records. We can’t control our record.”

It says it all, doesn’t it? And he kept his job for another 18 months.

This doesn’t sound good for the first two lines of defense. Hopefully Jamaal can bring the dirty bird back to Atlanta, and Houston and Williams can solidify the secondary.

Do we have any cap space to bring in any decent help for the D-line? Who else is out there as possiblities in free angecy?

I also heard that R.Kelly has re-written the opening music for Datelines to catch a predator.

Things are not looking to good in the ATL this year, I think the Birds will start strong, but untimately finish 8-12.

The Hawks ? who really cares anyways.

The Thrashers ? See above comment

The Braves ? See ya in the World Series

UGA & GT - Again, who cares.

So Jeff:

Is it true that Michael Vick will not be charged in the dog fighting scandal?

If so, when will the AJC confirm it for their readers???

8-12? Did the NFL playoffs go to a best of seven format? Moron.

We can’t afford to lose Grady Jackson. Give him a new contract that’s market value and get his big butt in shape. We need him up front to stop the run. Remember Carolina, they ran on us the entire game.

Russ, sorry freakshow, I made a mistake, kinda the same way you were conceived by your parents. What I meant to say was 8-8. You have got some anger management problems, you should really see a therapist.

This injury means that the falcons has to pay Grady. If the rookie they drafted proves hes a player then maybe not.

From what I hear we’re still in negotiations with Ian Scott. As for Grady, we’ve got to get the deal done or let him go. Simple as that.

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, wonder why you hacks haven’t reported the VA sheriff that has concluded that Vick won’t be charged in the dog fighting ring incident? You couldn’t wait to report something bad on him and beat it into the freaking ground, now that someone of authority has stepped and said this guy is innocent where is your journalistic enthusiasim now? Oh I know, it isn’t what your agenda suggest you do, is it? What a joke the AJC has become.

With recent recent injuries to our defense and team character, the Falcons should take a look at at Jon Abbate LB from Wake Forest. I know there were reasons he wasn’t drafted (undersized, bad 40 time, etc.), but he more than made up for his physical short comings with heart and character the last three years at WF while going really tough times.

Cut Gravy Jackson, and Slob Coleman! See ya! We have such a long way to go! I’m tired of losing! I mean can someone please, please just make some good decisions using commom sense. Don’t let guys “stick around”. Blank has listened to people for far too long. That’s why we are here now. Stop all the bull. If we would have kept old man river (Dan Reeves), things would have been better than this. It’s sad to see some of the decisions made by our football team in regards to players. Look up north and see how and what to do. Stop over spending on these lame a* athletes who only want be here for the strip clubs and concerts. I don’t blame them, but they don’t need to be here. I mean, damn!!!! Can somebody want to win around here! Oh yeah, leave Kell alone. Stop worrying about who singing and writing songs and focus on reporting the news we care about.

shadtown21…. First things first, are you calling me a name or criticizing me ? Secondly, only a prick would have sex with an underage girl, wouldn’t you agree. You obviously have no children or morals. Let, me guess, you probabaly also think Michael Jackson was really only having a sleep over with all those children as well.

Now that Jimmy Williams is a free safety, does that mean that he has to regain the six pounds he lost to be a cornerback?

As far as the Hawks… Why didn’t we try to sign Randolph Morris? He may not be an all-star, but he sure is better than Esteban Batista.

By Najeh Davenpoop

May 1, 2007 4:01 PM | Link to this

The Knicks already signed Randolph Morris.

Here’s your proof of Vick’s innocence, with confirmation here.

Don’t expect the AJC to report that any time within the next week. Jeff Schultz still needs some baseless accusations to manufacture his next poor excuse for a column.

Well injuries aren’t ever a good thing but at least it happened now instead of the preseason. Coleman & Dmo could come back by the first week. There’s options to get Ian Scott, possibly Kris Jenkins if he’s cut. Grady Jackson should be a high priority. Jordan Beck looks promising maybe move him back in the middle & move Brooking back to his normal Weakside but Brooking was told he would stay in the Middle. Regardless, there’s lot of options.

Keshawn Johnson is available!!! The Panthers just released him. Sign him up right now. With Johnson, Horn and Finneran (with the 2 supposedly first round picks behind them), we’ll have the receivers we need!

By steve

May 1, 2007 4:24 PM | Link to this

forget Jackson the Falcons should get on the phone and sign Keshawn Johnson to a two year contract giving Michael Horn, Keshawn, Algae and Finnerman as receivers and hope that one of our 1st rounders can develop.

jesus, look who’s bringing up the vick topic today? hmmmm.. if you didn’t notice this column takes shots at anybody and everybody… LIGHTEN UP!

besides if you knuckle heads could get it through your thick skull that it didnt’ have anything to do with whether or not vick was guilty or not. obviously he has been associated, fairly or not, with some negative stuff! why else did roger goddell want to meet with him? i guess our very own jeff shultz must have the mighty commish’s ear. ha you vick apologists are so stupid. i mean SO STUPID. if vick is innocent of everything why’d he come out and say he needs to change things.

he knows he needs to grow up and act more responsibly and has said so himself.

you guys need to stop sniffing his jock strap.

It would be wonderful if we signed K.Johnson. With our increased depth from the draft, the only thing needed now is a Quarterback.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but we can put Demo and Coleman on IR. I don’t think either is such a hit off of a salary cap, but I’m assuming they will make a disability check… not a full salary.

I know Grady’s been productive, but you don’t want the dissention in the locker room from someone who filed a lawsuit against the team.

There will also be some other LB cut during pre-season that we can pick up.

All is not lost… but our defense does need work (again.)

About the falcons, it doesn’t take an ESPN analyst to figure out the sad state of affairs with the management. An owner who thinks he can run the personnel roster, and that’s how we got these retreads that can’t stay out of the hospital squad. No top level receivers, but he’s paid so much money. A quarterback that can’t pass, but makes plenty of headlines off the field. An offensive line that is truly offensive to us all. New owner, but in reality, another non-football back ground, and he doesn’t understand why his team isn’t getting better. A 10 year contract, that guarantees mediocrity for a long time. The falcons are afraid to draft a quarterback in the late rounds, because it might make MVick feel threatened. Can you ever imagine Vince Lonbardi ever putting up with todays spoiled brats. I do believe that even he wouldn’t be successful with today’s pampered lot. That’s all.

I personally think that we need to do what ever we have to in order to get Greg Maddox back on our team. If I remember correctly, he was the all time assist leader for the Hawks and if I’m not mistaken, did’nt he score the winning goal in the Super Bowl also the yeat the Falcons beat the Dodgers.

Plus, he actually wants to come to Atlanta.
