Anderson inspired by family’s success
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Flowery Branch — It was a celebration for an athlete, a celebration for family and friends, and yes, a celebration for the senses.
A cellphone rings in a hotel penthouse in Little Rock, Ark. Many in the room can’t hear it. Jamaal Anderson answers, smiles and listens.
He turns to his mother and, in sign language, relays: “It’s the Falcons.”
Karen Anderson turns to her husband, Glenn. She signs, “It’s the Falcons.”
Word spreads on the top floor of the Peabody Hotel in Little Rock, Ark. Some hear the NFL commissioner make the ensuing announcement on television. Others read the closed captioning. Soon, there is a convergence of all forms of celebration by 150 relatives and friends — one-third of whom are deaf.
Some yell. Some sign. Many laugh, or cry, or both.
“It was unreal — the whole top floor exploded,” Karen Anderson said later by phone. “It was phenomenal. Everybody was here. We had everybody. A mixture of black people, white people, purple, gray. We had people with disabilities. We had jocks. We had all cultures, all people. This means so much for everybody.”
This is the NFL draft. It would be foolish to declare early how this turns out. These are young people making big money for the first time in their life. These are young athletes with that most uncertain of qualities called “potential.” These are young people — period.
But know this: If Jamaal Anderson does not make the Falcons look very good, it won’t be for some of the pitfalls that derail so many players. It won’t be because of cockiness or a poor work ethic or a lack of perspective.
When a kid labors about whether to turn pro and make millions of dollars, or go back to school — that’s a good sign.
When an athlete shows the mental toughness and athletic ability to make such an atypical position change from flanker (his primary position in high school) to defensive end (at Arkansas), it bodes well for what’s to come.
When a young man grows up under the same roof as a man, his father, who proves to be the ultimate example of resolve and determination, he won’t allow himself to quit. Ever.
Glenn Anderson, Jamaal’s father, has a Ph.D. from NYU. He’s also deaf — the first deaf African-American to earn a doctorate. He teaches at Arkansas and works at the university’s Research and Training Center for the deaf and hard of hearing.
It follows that Glenn Anderson has been an inspiration not only to his own family but the deaf community. He lost his hearing at the age of 6 when he was given an experimental medication for pneumonia. But that didn’t stop him succeeding in school and becoming a high school basketball star in Chicago.
We need not wonder where Jamaal gets his work ethic. We need not wonder how a defensive end, who early in the season graded out as a second-rounder, saw his draft stock rocket late in the coming months.
Anderson was not the Falcons’ first choice for their first pick. But Clemson defensive end Gaines Adams, LSU free safety LaRon Landry, Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson — they were all gone by the time the Falcons’ turn came at No. 8.
The Calvin Johnson rumors? A pipe dream, created by those blind to the obvious holes on this roster. “We knew how important the draft was,” president and general manager Rich McKay said. “It wasn’t one where we were going to mortgage the future for [with a trade].”
But they should be happy with who they got. Anderson is a rarity, a defensive end (to replace Patrick Kerney) who can both bring pressure from the left side and defend the run.
“That’s what excited us so much about him,” coach Bobby Petrino said.
It was Petrino who phoned Anderson of his impending selection Saturday. Anderson’s response: “Are you really picking me?”
So much for ego.
Word spread. The room erupted. Karen Anderson had spoken for weeks about the possibility of her son playing in Atlanta. Among her close friends here: Diane Johnson, the mother of the Hawks’ Joe Johnson.
Glenn Anderson also celebrated, with friends in the room and in cyberspace.
“The deaf community knew what was going on,” Karen said. “His BlackBerry was vibrating all day.”
A celebration to hear, to see, to feel. We can’t know what happens next. But some signs can’t be ignored.

Great pick! Go Falcons…..

Falcons never worked the guy out or spoke to him but burned the 8 pick in the draft to pick him up. This guy has only played the position for 3 years and his stats were totally created from playing weak opponents. Jamaal even said he was originally projected as a 2nd round pick. As the record will prove over the next 2 years, he will become another salary cap boatanchor for us the Falcons to deal with as they are looking for another DE.
From the AJC article: Anderson was surprised the Falcons picked him because he didn’t go through any private workouts them and, other than a call Thursday from someone asking where he could be reached during the draft, did not have any conversations with them since the NFL scouting combine in February.
Nice work McKay! Keep jacking up the ticket prices.

Well, it’s ovbious that Great Pick LOL doesn’t follow SEC football because he sure doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Weak opponents huh…someone had better tell Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, and Florida that. Yeah, they’re way overrated. There are 31 other teams in the league to choose from, we sure don’t need you in the dome.

Anderson fills a need, and LOL is just upset because his wet dream of getting a Calvin Johnson Falcons jersey just went up in smoke (pun not intended). It would be one thing if Landry or Adams was still available and Atlanta skipped on them to get Anderson, but the fact remains that this team desperately needed to draft to build up the offensive & defensive lines. Mission accomplished!
I also like the Justin Blalock pick, a huge durable guard who can protect Vick’s blind side. I’m not sure about Chris Houston though, he seems a bit small and unable to play in a zone, but according to scouts he’s physical and Zimmer likes those players, so we’ll see how that pans out.
It will be interesting to see if Atlanta goes after Micheal Bush in the third round. After that they should spend the remainder of the draft building on defense. If Bush is not available, hopefully Charles Johnson from UGA will be. Depth is a major necessity in Atlanta that needs to be taken care of this offseason. By picking up Joe Horn and players of his ilk (not necessarily stars but veterans who can provide leadership) Atlanta is on the right track.

I’m guessing the reason that Petrino didn’t pick Okoye was because they felt it was more important to get a DE instead of a DT which he played. I thought about that too san antonio.

A big athletic rush end who played in the SEC and can also defend against the run, yeah that sounds like a bust pick to me. I guess we could have taken Ginn, Jr. instead, LOL.
Landry was gone, brown was gone, petersen was off the board, it was a need pick and we definitely need a de as well as a solid guard and some depth at cb. This has actually been a makes sense draft for the falcons.

The Good: The Falcons made some solid picks. Picks that filled “needs”. Calvin Johnson not ending up in Tampa and having to face him twice each year.
The Bad: Falcons not being able to draft LaRon Landry from LSU. This guy is going to be outstanding!
The Ugly: New Orleans Saints drafting Robert Meachem improving their already potent and high scoring offense. The last thing we need in the NFC South.
Overall, we did Good. Regardless of whatelse we do the rest of the draft, I’d give the Falcons a B+.
Now lets draft for depth…including a quarterback we can groom for the next 2 years. Trust me, Vick will be gone in 2 years…and I am a very huge Vick fan who knows its time to start looking elsewhere. Zebras don’t change their strips. You’ve seen the best of Vick…Now having to learn a new offensive system…its going to be a tremendous struggle for guy who is not known to be a student of the QB..i.e. Tom Brady, Payton Manning, etc..
Nevertheless…Go Falcons…

Damnm, Damn, Damn! Them New Orleans Saints….They “Let” Joe “washed up Horn” go and draft a top notch reciever. Instead of Sean Payton and the Saints scoring 27 points per game, now they’ll average 35. The rich gets richer don’t they?

Good, Bad, Ugly… Bobby Petrino isn’t the kind of guy who will bs anything. Rich McKay, yes. But Petrino will not shovel crap for any reason. So when he says that he is ecstatic with Vick’s studying, leadership, and the speed at which he’s learning the offense, then I’m sorry, I believe him. Whether or not Vick is here in two years, I don’t know. But I trust Petrino when he says that as far as football goes, Vick is doing everything he needs to do plus some. Now, his off the field crap, well, something tells me that the Commish sat down with him today and explained to him about how he enjoys suspending conduct offenders for 8 games without pay. And I hope it sticks.
As far as the draft, it’s okay. I think with Jackson suing the team, that DT was our most pressing need because DE is a such a deep position. We could have got a guy who immediately starts at DE in the 2nd round. Instead we take a guy who might be a one year wonder. It’s an iffy pick. I still say that it should have been Okoye. What I like is our third pick, our second one in the second round. We now have a starting corner, who is known for his man - up skills and his physicality, and it lets Williams move to FS where he belongs. So although we didn’t get Landry, Nelson, or Meriweather (a shocker by NE in the first round), we already had a really good FS on the team already, and now we’ll see him at the position that he’s most adapted to. And the Guard we got, well, my asthmatic 200 lb brother could have stepped in at LG and played better than Matt Lehr: The Worst Starting Offensive Lineman in the History of the NFL. So, he’s an automatic step up.
But here’s the thing, it looks like with three picks so far in the first two rounds (we may move up again, you never know), the team got FOUR starters out of it: DE, LG, CB, and FS (Jimmy Williams). So I say, even though we didn’t take Okoye like I thought we should, it’s still a good draft. Anytime you can turn 3 picks into 4 starters, that’s freaking awesome! Now we just need to pray Michael Bush falls to us at 75, where he’s projected to. Then again, Meriweather wasn’t expected to go where he went, so you never know. A team who needs a RB real bad, like Houston, might snatch him up in the 3rd round, two picks before us. So we might need to move up again.

With the league really coming down on troubled players, Vick continuing to jab the franchise in the eye, and Blank’s desire to get players that are involved in the community, I can easily understand this pick. Also, for some odd reason I trust Mike Zimmer’s ability to pick defensive players and coach them up.
Finally ‘Great Pick LOL’, Get A life!!!!! You’re on here slamming the kid for no apparent reason. Why do you even follow the team?

I like the second rounders, but what’s with Laurent Robinson out of Illinois State in the 3rd round? Both SI and ESPN are decrying his lack of speed and strength. Isn’t there a more pressing need like safety, defensive tackle, or even running back (Michael Bush) we might address in the third round? I’m not impressed with the most recent pick.
By Greg
April 28, 2007 10:39 PM | Link to this
I agree that Laurent Robinson is not only a reach, but an unnecessary reach. Even if they think Bush will still be there in 4th round (I doubt it), they could have taken the Free the OT. He’s a bit of a development guy, but that’s perfect.

I agree that Robinson is a reach. Slow he isn’t. He ran a 4.38 at the combine and finsished in the top 10 in every drill - great athlete. Whether he can step up to NFL competition is the big question. It not like our receivers are all that great.

I may have gone with Ugoh instead of Houston in the 2nd round and the Robinson picked surprised me but I will give the guys the benefit of the doubt on this one. (nfl.com had him listed 12th for the position, which was about right) Probably would have taken Bush or maybe Charles Johnson

Wa ahat are ya’ll upset about? Everytime the offense last year did something great, the defense killed it by giving up a big play. We need Abrrahams healthy and thfulAnderson to step right in. With the defense shored up, the offense will not have to constantly get into these shootouts. Anderson didn’t play anybody? what about the SEC and their out of conference game with USC..granted they got blown out but he has played in big games. Also, a couple of those Houston teams were bad. I’m happy..we did well with the 8 pick…c’mon Falcon faithful..we;re not going back to the 80’s!…Playoffs…I promise!

Falcon’s draft so far so good.
At first I was really bummed because I really have wanted really wanted Landry for a long time but I really think things worked out ok. I never expected Adams to be on the board and running back just not a pressing as DE, OF and secondary.
Plus there were no good DE’s on the board when the Falcon’s picked in the second round and drafting a corner will allow the falcons to move jimmy Williams to safety where he is a much better fit. I have to wait and see about the WR in the 3rd, I hope falcons know something that most scouts missed.

Hat’s off to McKay and Petrino for a great job! The picks they made were very strategic and filled alot of the voids we had last year. To come out of round 3 with a potential starting DE, OG and now a solid defensive back team (Hall, Houston, Milloy, and Williams)is tremendous (possibly one of the best in league). Now our DB will not be torched weekly. I wasn’t aware of the WR pick, but after researching him, I also think he will be a great addition to the team, especially with Petrino’s desire to play multiple WRs.
So far I am very impressed with what Coach Petrino has done, from upgrading the coaching staff, to improving the roster, and to creating what seems to be a much more improved work ethic.
Hopefully, we will be equally successful tomorrow. Go Falcons! The best is yet to come!!!!!

Jamaal Anderson sounds like a good guy and that he comes from a good family. That’s encouraging.
As for Vick showing up to honor his Hokies at the draft, well, DeAngelo Hall was also in New York and up on the stage. Do people get on DeAngelo Hall’s case? Hell, no. Vick brings it on himself, folks. He deserves to get hammered as much as he does because he hasn’t handled his business (especially his dog-breeding business…haha) on or off the field. Period.

Overall I like the Falcons’ draft… so far. I would like for the Birds to go after Michael Bush and Brandon Siler (lb florida) or Mason Crosby (K) or Marcus Thomas (4th). Sentimentally I would have liked to have Calvin Johnson but Jamaal Anderson seems like a great pick and is it just me but does the kid look like a Julius Peppers clone or what… I mean even they way he’s put together. And we also managed to get the smartest strongest offensive lineman and a new cover corner with a first round grade. Good job McKay, Petrino.

They should also look at the Harris kid from FIU for Outside linebacker or Dallas Sartz. Can anybody help me get a job as a scout…lol I’m really interested.

I liked this kid after having seen a special segment about him on ESPN a couple of weeks ago. Kudos to the Falcons for picking him. Kudos to his family for raising him right. Kudos to him for allowing his family to do so. I was crushed about losing Kerney, but this certainly lightens the blow.

When you get three starters in the draft and another from moving Jimmy Williams to safety that is a great job. Many howled at McKay’s third round picks which turned out to be great in Schaub and Norwood. On the other hand McKay has not had the same success yet in picking receivers based on results thus far. I understand us picking a WR although from a value standpoint I wanted Charles Johnson in our DE rotation. We got bigger on both the OL and DL which is important, as we have had problems with pass protection and stopping the run. Our first three picks all could have been first round selections and nobody would have said it was a reach.

Anderson’s a nice player, but with the pitiful state of Atlanta’s run defense, how in the world do you let Okoye get away? In all reality, Grady Jackson has played his last down and Babineaux may face suspension as well….. how does McKay prepose to solve this? Not one single defensive tackle and only one offensive lineman taken on day one, yet we draft an iffy cornerback and an obscure WR…. just brilliant.
McKay must be on the payroll of the Texans because they’ve now taken TWO potentially great players from him in less than 3 months.

Can anyone tell the falcons record prior the Michael Vick era? Starting from 1990, 2001 to present! How many playoff appearences? How may Conf. Championships? Has our defense been ranked High over the Keith Brookings era? or Patrick Kerney whom you guys love so much? Now it was said that Brooking the face of the Falcons! Prior to the Vick era how many free agents you know of trying to come here and play for Atlanta? How many Prime Time games, or televised for that matter have you seen here locally, as well nationally, or internationally? Some of you talked as if this guy has had a group of reciever’s, a great offisive line, running backs, and decent defense! Some of you seem think that Finn is some great reciever. The guy barely gets 500 yds. a season, Rod Coleman made Kerney numbers go up! Now Brooking has had great numbers, but those have been padded because he’s not making half the play’s he’s getting credit for! Name a game that he’s been dominate I’ve recorded the last two season and I can tell he’s not making these tackles people! Could someone name me a pro bowl O-lineman? Yeah! the Falcons led the NFL in rushing the last 3 yrs. As the old coach hung his hat on! Now take away Vick numbers, what do you have? Now the falcons record the last 2 season would have been alot better if the damn Keith Brookings & Pat Kerneys defenses would have held the damn leads that Vick, and Offense gave them during these games! But none of you want point these facts out! You all want too blame one guy! And that one guy that put this sorry joke of a organization on the map! And one last question? How many of you all was breaking down the doors of the Dome, or watching the Falcons games on T.V. rooting and cheering for the Atlanta Falcons prior to Vick comming here? Only a very few fans on these blogs can say that! And that’s going all the way back too the Fulton County Stadium days from which Vick never had the honor of playing in! And giving respect too the true fans of this team! Go Falcons!

Thanks, Clearskies, for the link for Laurent Robinson. His ‘pros’ sound promising and his ‘cons’ are minimal. “Most trustworthy…hard-working…self-starter..”; sounds like a pretty good pick. Overall, looks like a pretty good draft for the Birds. But I agree we still need d. tackle(s), but I’d rather get a sleeper DT than a high rounds pick that doesn’t pan out. FYI: I believe Brooking has been a fairly consistent Pro Bowler. Not to mention, he gets switched position-wise about every year. He does pretty well considering the jerking around and lack of supporting cast; EG Hartwell, Reese, injuries on the line, etc.

For those of you who want to draft the Bush kid out of L’ville - have you seen any video of him lately? He probably won’t be ready to play until late in the upcoming season (or the start of the season after that). It’s a shame - w/o the injury, he projected as a possible 1st/probable top-of-the-2nd rounder.

Thank goodness for a local website. The national media thought that the draft was the Brady Quinn sweepstakes. Who cares where the 22nd pick goes ? Why didn’t the national media get into the Calvin Johnson story or the Jamal Anderson story both of which are remarkable. Notre Dame obviously owns the national media. Thank goodness NFL scouts can see past it.
