Raiders will just bungle it, baby

Jeff Schultz

10: Only four days until the Raiders do something really stupid.

9: Only four days until the Lions do something really stupid.

8: Seriously, has there have been a better year to be drafting third in the NFL? These two franchises probably have had more spectacular face-plants in the draft than any other (Falcons notwithstanding). If I’m Cleveland (third) and Tampa Bay (fourth), forget worrying about who might be gone. Just sit back and wait for the 27 clowns stuffed into the VW to drive in.

7: For the record, I deny a Pro Football Weekly report that I may admitting smoking wacky tobaccy in college. And if I did smoke, I certainly didn’t inhale. And if I did make brownies, I certainly didn’t eat them. And I certainly didn’t accidentally mix it up with the oregano when I made spaghetti sauce. If you would like a list of any other things I didn’t do in college, please let me know.

6: Calvin Johnson and two others say they got high. Duh. What a non-story. Hey, how about if somebody breaks a story on the three college players who HAVEN’T gotten high?

5: No, this is not on the same level of a high-professional athlete getting caught with drugs or trick water bottles. There’s a big difference between a college player doing what kids do between (or during) classes and a millionaire athlete damaging not merely his own credibility but that of an entire pro franchise. One is about being a kid. The other is about embarrassing a franchise and turning your back on your teammates.

4: The Braves announced season tickets may now be purchased through a 90-day no-interest financing plan, a la furniture and appliance stories. It’s a worthy option. But I’d rather see creative financial ways to keep Andruw Jones in centerfield. Or is he going to be replaced by a new couch?

3: Scott Mellanby, who retired Tuesday, deserved better than to go out with a four-game sweep in the first-round of the playoffs. But while his legs are shot, his mind could still be an asset for the Thrashers. They could do worse than to bring the guy in as an assistant coach.

2: So much for the South ruling “Yankee Flatball.” After consecutive Stanley Cups by Tampa Bay and Carolina, look at these results: 1) Carolina didn’t make the playoffs; 2) The Thrashers and Tampa are out in one run; 3) Nashville, after posting the league’s third-best record and acquiring Peter Forsberg before the trade deadline, was bounced in five games by San Jose.

1: 92,000 people at an Alabama spring game. Was it held in a stadium or on Mount Sinai? Nick Saban turned Mountain Dew into wine. Then, of course, Alabama fans asked him to turn it back.

Who would know more what the Raiders might do than an average sports writer from Atlanta? Congrats you A, you used all ten points to insult or demean someone. Nice work….

Average sports writer? You are giving him too much credit. The AJC is pathetic, insteading of stating the facts in the headline; Vick’s flight is delayed, missed meeting with congress. The headline reads Vick missed flight. Schultz is just a representation of the mediocrity and low expectation that has been set for this wretched paper.

Personally I like the top ten. I take it for what it is… entertainment. If you took everything Mr. Schultz said literally or seriously well then you would be in a world of hurt. I just cant wait until football season when we can here about the trembling chiwawa’s and the Bumbling Wreck!
(And I’m a Tech fan) Insults and demeaning comments is almost all the media does now anyway you should be used to it.

Way to put a spin on it as if Mr Vick was getting high in the bathroom or something and missed his flight. God the paper is pathetic. I leaving and not coming back unless they stop b*** slapping are teams and players.

Seriously, what does it take to be a sports writer ? Not much apparently. Perhaps you could take the time to proof read your own articles before having them posted.

8 Seriously, has there have been a more telling indication of the minimal requirements of a writer than this item ?

What exactly is “has there have been” ?

Take the time to actually research and post an informative article. I honestly think you just came up with what you feel was catchy title and threw in some filler info to get it posted.

Sad…

I don’t remember Calvin Johnson saying anything about “getting high”. He stated that he had smoked marijuana. Not exactly the same thing.

The headline “Vick misses flight” is pathetic and the editors should be cruified for that. A mere glance at the headline implies that Vick was late to the airport and missed his flight. Way to go AJC.

Hi, yes, the typo reflects poorly on a person who makes his wage by writing. But it’s sort of like reading most of the responses to the column, so the brain gets used to it. Sadly.

The sad part to all of this is that Oakland and Detroit probably won’t screw up the top of the draft. Unless you consider Russell and a trade-down to be errors in judgment. And judging from the number of SEC’ers who butcher the English language on this blog, that’s probably not the case.

The saddest part to all of this is that Alabama drew 92,000 for its Spring game. Probably figured it’d be one of the few times they’d see the team win. Or they’re out to support their high-character coach, before he leaves in an hour.

I’ll take the couch and an $8 million center fielder, thank you very much. Who’ll notice anyway? Only about 25,000 show up to watch the best baseball franchise in the major leagues. If a center fielder falls in the forest…

You’re wasting your time, Jeff. It is obvious that the majority of people who read this (and then respond) have no sense of humor, and little sense—period.

Any team that passes up Calvin Johnson at the top of the draft for one of the two mediocre quarterbacks is making a mistake. Russell and Quinn need a lot of work to become consistent NFL players, whereas Calvin is arguably capable of making the Pro Bowl in his rookie season. Most draft projections currently have both Oakland and Detroit passing up Calvin; if those projections are correct it looks like those two teams are setting themselves up for failure. As flawed a prospect as Reggie Bush was, people were crucifying Houston for passing him up last year. Calvin is just as revolutionary of a prospect, and is not nearly as flawed as Bush. Taking him #1 should be a no-brainer.

Jeff, there’s also a big difference between a real journalist who waits until facts come out to pass judgement, and a wannabe knockoff of Bill Simmons who has no regard for the facts and writes columns solely to instigate and cause controversy. One deserves to have a job at a major newspaper, the other doesn’t. Something tells me when the AJC gets around to firing you, you’ll be sitting alone in your apartment making jokes about water bottles while the rest of us are watching the Falcons, led by #7, in the Super Bowl. Seriously, nobody has ever made more out of a non-story than you have out of Mr. Mexico’s water bottle. You stopped being funny a long time ago. Let it go.

Funny how I get blamed for an item (Vick misses flight to Washington) that I didn’t even mention. But as long as so many of you brought it up, this story just keeps getting more interesting … Even Vick’s own sponsor is contradicting him. JS

Vick a no-show for Congressional breakfast QB’s publicist says he couldn’t get on D.C. flight, but AirTran disagrees

By STEVE WYCHE The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 04/24/07 Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was a no-show a Capitol Hill breakfast Tuesday at which he was to speak to some members of Congress about the need to increase funding for after school programs.

Vick’s publicist said he missed a connection in Atlanta and couldn’t get on a later flight. But a spokesman for AirTran, which Vick has an endorsement deal with, said Vick was confirmed on a late Monday night flight to Washington, D.C., and did not show up for the flight.

“It honestly was not his fault,” Vick’s publicist, Susan Bass said. “He was trying to do the right thing.”

Vick was scheduled to arrive in Washington Monday night after playing in teammate Warrick Dunn’s charity golf tournament in Tampa. His flight from Tampa to Atlanta on AirTran departed late causing him to miss his 8:35 p.m. connecting flight to Washington-Reagan National Airport, Bass said. AirTran’s Web site shows the 6:25 p.m. flight from Tampa left almost 30 minutes late, arriving in Atlanta at 8:38 p.m. “He was really mad,” Bass said. “He was on the plane and everything, but the plane didn’t come in until late.”

There were flights to Washington-Dulles and Baltimore-Washington airports shortly after 9 p.m., but both were full and Vick could not be accommodated, AirTran spokesman Tad Hutcheson said. Bass said Vick tried to get on a later flight to Washington, D.C., but they were oversold.

AirTran’s Hutcheson said Vick was re-booked on a 10:50 p.m. flight from Atlanta to Washington-Reagan and was notified of the change in flight arrangements. Vick did not show for the flight and it left for Washington without him and with about 20 emplty seats, Hutcheson said. Vick was unavailable for comment.

Vick was scheduled to attend an 8 a.m. function with lawmakers and more than 100 members or supporters of Afterschool Alliance, a non-profit advocacy group established to raise awareness for funding for after school programs.

Vick’s mother, Brenda Boddie, accepted an award from Afterschool Alliance on Vick’s behalf. Vick was honored for his and his foundation’s work with after school youth projects in Georgia and Virginia.

Gerry Smith in Washington, D.C., contributed to this report.

And Jeff,

This is NEWS???

Congratulations to Michael Vick for being honored for his work with after-school projects in Georgia and Virginia! It’s really needed, and I hope many more athletes would become advocates for after-school programs!

All of the “Airtran had another flight that he could have taken” stuff is as irrelevant as all of this “trick water bottle” that didn’t have any contraband in it.

But I did hear of a scoop, though:

A couple of days ago, I think I saw Mike Vick at a local McDonald’s actually eating some french fries! That is a total lack of judgment, right? Doesn’t Vick supposed to be in TRAINING??

We need to get rid of him and re-sign Schaub, because Schaub had the salad…

Remember Broadway Joe Namath’s classic reply when asked by a sportswriter if he had indeed majored in basketweaving while attending Alabama - “No” said Namath, “I majored in journalism,it was easier.”
