The Tuesday Countdown

Jeff Schultz

10: It’s a good thing Liberty Media is only buying the Braves for tax purposes, because they’re getting a heck of a writeoff with Mike Hampton.

9: Things you want to see: Don Imus standing over a sink, washing and setting the hair of players for the Rutgers women basketball team. And then maybe forcing him to walk the streets as an old, white ho.

8: There seem to be a lot of people dumping on Tiger Woods for letting his emotions get to him on the final day of the Masters (“What the hell just happened?” he yelled after his approach shot on 16 went into the bunker.). I’ve gotten e-mails, blogs and was asked about it on a radio show. But, people, Woods is a competitive guy. What did you expect? If we’ve never seen this side of him before, maybe it’s because we’ve never seen him lose on a Sunday before. Does it really mean the guy’s a dirtbag? If he blows a few more majors and starts throwing his clubs into lakes, then get back to me.

7: You know, if we just canceled the rest of the Hawks’ season and let the ice at Philips Arena freeze properly for the playoffs, it would help the Thrashers and nobody would miss a thing.

6: This is not at all an endorsement of Josh Smith’s moronic protest during a timeout the other day. But when a player is so bold that he feels he can call out a coach during a timeout, it doesn’t speak well to the control said coach has over the team. To translate: Mike Woodson has lost them.

5: No, Billy Knight shouldn’t fire Woodson. Why? Because that would constitute Billy Knight putting together another plan. And we don’t want to go there.

4: This is where Knight’s plan has gotten the Hawks: 26th overall, and potentially no lottery pick. Waiter: hemlock.

3: American Express has signed snowboarder and skateboarder Shaun White to an endorsement contract. White also was given a Gold Card. Unfortunately, he doesn’t own a wallet and he lost the card through a hole in his shorts.

2: I promised myself I would never write about the Arena Football League unless there was an item so good that it would interest, like, you know, normal sports fans. So here it is: Jon Bon Jovi, who owns the Philadelphia team (I learned), gave the double-barreled middle-finger salute to referees during a game against the Georgia Force Monday night. This wonderful moment was caught on camera by ESPN (which for all we know hatched the plan in AFL marketing meetings).

1: Arthur Blank’s always up for a new marketing idea. Maybe he can bring in Michael Vick as a consultant on this one.

Sure, Woody is ineffective (and has been long before the Smith incident), but in order to fire him, the Atlanta Spirit would need to jointly choose a replacement. And they can’t agree on pizza toppings more or less who should lead the team in the next few years. Not to mention that if you are an experienced and quality Head Coach, would you have any reason to even accept the Head Coach position while this legal nightmare continues? I think Woody gets to stay next year and we get yet another lottery pick in the 07-08 draft.

I wish I had Mike’s job.

(You know, go under the knife every few years and rehab playing golf. Watch some free baseball from the dugout and get paid like the CEO of a Fortune 100 company.)

I mean, if Mike Hampton retires right after his contract’s up, would his lifestyle change one bit???

Happy Trails to Kevin Mathis!!!

Kevin Mathis is a really good guy and a good football player who has been released by the Falcons, and due to his neck injury, probably done for his career. He was a beast, but unfortunately, the injuries just gotten to him. He’s released due to a failed physical.

If you look at Woodson and BK have done over the past three, it has further put the Hawks in the hole. While there is a great core of youngsters, Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Marvin Williams(he needs to work big time over the summer), and Josh Childress, Wooydson has been unable to accomplish anything. While I have believed it takes time with such a group of young players, he has shown no improvement. He lacks any type of coaching ability, and the Smith incident is the final straw. BK needs to be fired too. Besides the CP3/Marvin debacle, he just hasn’t cut it. (See: Lo Wright, and Speedy signings, drafting Shelden at 5— granted he has been injured, but you don’t guarantee a player a draft pick) I hope we can a GM who can turn this team around, and bring a coach such as Paul Silas or the Phoenix assistant, Marc Iavaroni. I really like Iavaroni, who can turn us into a run-n-gun team that could work for the High-flying Hawks.

Personally, I like the fact that Josh Smith is so frustrated with the situation he has reacted.

He has been playing his tail off on both sides of the court and if some of his fire rubbed off on his teammates and coaching staff, the Hawks would be a better team.

Tiger’s shot into the bunker that he blamed on his caddy was on 17, not 16. I’m not suggesting Tiger should be vilified for it but the press might want to at least point out it wasn’t Tiger’s finest moment. They also could question him a little bit more aggressively on the obvious course management blunder he made on 15 but wouldn’t acknowledge. The golf press doesn’t seem to have any problem piling on Mickelson when he makes a similar decision.

Jeff, something tells me if you even play golf it’s about twice a year in scrambles. Am I close?

And who is this Mike Woodson guy you’re talking about? Do you mean to tell me Atlanta has a pro basketball team?

Rian do not confuse ineptitude with racism. I truly love all Atlanta sports teams (Jackets excluded). The Hawks are the most frustrating of them all. I keep on telling myself that there has got to be a plan. Seems the plan might be to make the Hawks the”Las Vegas Action”. In keeping with traditional Hawks values, I am quite confident that we will end up with the fourth pick. Joe Johnson is awesome. Giving up Diaw and 2 draft picks for a restricted FA is inept. Only protecting said picks to the four is folly. Indiana protected the first round pick in the Harrington trade to the top ten. I suppose it is better than getting the first pick and choosing Durant. Is it possible to have 15 forwards on a roster? I hope Belkin wins. There is no imaginable way this franchise could be any worse. Shelden Williams will be productive, but not trading down? Ineptitude not racism

Mike Woodson had a good reason to light into Josh Smith. He took a jumper over Andre Miller with time winding down when he was supposed to post Miller up. Smith had a brain cramp and Woodson took him to task for it. I don’t think Mike has lost the team. Smith knew he was wrong, but he tried to deflect the blame onto Woodson.

Woody-Hate to see you go…you where brought in in a “no win situation”…not saying he is a good coach…but he is not a bad coach…coached under Larry Brown…that has to count for something…maybe. Anyway….he is fighting an uphill battle. Ownership…Billy Knights master plan…drafting Sheldon….bringing in Speedy….Lo wright….I mean look at what the guy has been dealt…but then again I guess it’s not the cards…it’s how you play them. But I do cut the guy some slack. There has been steady…SLOW I SHOULD SAY…but steady improvement since the 13 win disaster. You doubled the wins last year..which actually made the town think we had a shot at the lpayoffs this year..which is why I’m guessin it’s even harsher this year…even though we have a few more wins this year. We lost the only All Star this year during the final stretch…which I think usually makes or break a coach…but thats the breaks. Like I said I think he’s a good coach…really I do…but this isn’t a good situation….I mean as a Hawk fan I thank him for coming in here and trying his best…but it just didn’t cut it…some your fault….some BK’s fault. But all in all you tried your best…but it’s time for him and the Hawks to move on.

I don’t think Woodson’s lost the team. This isn’t the first time he’s had a heated exchange with a player, but each time they made up and moved on. From everything I’ve heard, the Hawks players like Woodson.

They should fire Woodson not because he’s “lost the team”, but because he’s a terrible offensive coach who can’t get the most out of his players.

Woody is the worst, maybe to be outdone by his GM, who may actually be outdone by the Spirit owners. Three years, and diddly squat? Excuses, excuses, and more excuses is all we hear from Woody, and the organization in general.

While the Spirit Group and DA BK have not helped Woody very much, he has the most resposibility for the failures of the team. Woody has the biggest doghouse in the league: Salim at the head, then Solomon, then Smooth, then Sheldon, then Marvin. A coach with as poor of a winning percentage as he has, has no business enlarging and adding to his doghouse.

Woody must go.

How can you make chicken salad out of chicken @#$%? Woodson might be some of the problem but Billy Knight is the majority of the problem. His draft selections along with some of his selections in trades are enough to get any coach fired. I don’t know how good of a coach Woody is but you don’t win the Kentucky Derby on a mule, and in this case Billy is the mule. If Knight keeps his job after this year I think I will run for President in 2008, because it only shows that miracles do happen

Or, maybe, the boy just snapped. Listen, if I was having my breakout year on a team that’s probably going to finish with thirty wins and I’d had defeat snatched from the jaws of victory as many times as Josh Smith has sneen it done, not to mention being the only experienced superstar on the team that hasn’t gotten critically maimed somehow. That’s not to say that he’s not probably pretty dinged up to boot. Anyway, I think the boy just snapped. As for Woodson, I’ll say the same thing that I’ve said all year. With all the injuries and problems that this team has had, a team that wasn’t very deep to begin with, it’s a miracle that they’ve doen as well as they have. In short, I know few other coaches that could have done as well as Woodson under his circumstances, and none offhand that could have done better.

Woodson is a joke which is what this poor franchise has looked like for three years. It’s a real pity, too. Josh Smith gets my vote for MVP. At least he had the heart to care! Rian, you’re an idiot, and the less said about you and to you the better.

Here’s the thing, Jeff: Can Liberty Media possibly be as bad as the idiot group of yahoo’s who run the Thrashers and Hawks? The same idiots who seem to think that Billy Knight is an NBA GM? They’ve set the bar pretty low for crappy ownership, so Liberty would have to really, REALLY suck for them to be worse than Atlanta (Idiots) Dispirited, Inc.

And on that note, how ‘bout them Thrashers! I’ve got a full playoff beard and tickets to the first two rounds (and will for the next two after we finish off the Rangers). Here’s hoping that either Tampa upsets Joisey (not with Brodeur back there); or that the mighty Men from Long Island led by the the REALLY long-term solution in goal can beat the Sabres (a very good possibility) so we can have two rounds with home ice.

Jeff, I hear you’re about pack the bags and follow the Thrashers hermit style to cover the team’s first foray into the playoffs. Have fun. And remember… keep it sarcastic.

Personally,

Race talk in regards to sports is kinda dumb.

Take Mike Woodson, for instance. If you don’t like him, they will replace him… And the person they may replace him with may very well be another African-American.

See, most players in the NBA are African-Americans. Most players in the NFL are African-Americans (with a large portion of them being QBs.)

And, many managers are African-Americans. And that number is growing, not reducing.

Now, baseball doesn’t have as many African-Americans as they used to. To me, the game of baseball is boring. And we don’t play “pick-up” games of baseball like back in the old days.

But there’s a rising majority of Latinos that are making baseball their own.

And Caucasians are still the majority owners, but that is soon changing, as well.

So, to talk about black players in terms of inferiority is laughable, and shows true ignorance. And for minorities to consistently look for “hidden” signs of racist views is paranoia.

Sports, like life in the USA, is growing more and more desegregated. And the old dinosaurs who hides behind charity and mirth to display their inner demons are waxing colder and colder, just like those who profit from them by showing themselves as race champions to exude power on society that makes a mockery out of the Civil Rights movement by keep stirring the racial pot.

In other words, let’s just look at athletes as athletes.

Woodson should’ve been gone after a 13-69 season just like any other team would’ve done. But no. BK has to stand up for his boy. And what has that got us in three years?

  1. A coach with a 29% winning percentage.

  2. Free agents who laugh at the thought of coming here to play.

  3. Pathetic attendance

  4. A bunch of forwards who can’t shoot.

  5. A bunch of backup old point guards.

  6. Losing 2 possibly 3 draft picks for this very deep 2007 draft.

  7. Leaving JJ and J-Smoove pondering whether or not to get to another team so they can start winning and leaving us with our busted draft picks and old point guards.

I’m about done with the Hawks until they decide on when they want to start building an actual NBA team, and not an NBDL all-star team.

By j2tuf

April 10, 2007 4:12 PM | Link to this

No one is more disappointed in this NBDL team than me. The continuous mistakes over the year makes it impossible to watch this team. Why didn’t BK sign Randolph Morris? At 1.5M for 2 years, he makes as much as Estaban Batista. When is the last time he has been in the game?

Morris is a first round pick player without having to use the pick. We have four point guards on this team. Combined they represent one good backup. In the deepest draft in years we gave up a high second round pick for another PG that doesn’t address the issue.

BK, I can do a better job. I can tell the difference between a center and a bunch of undersized power forwards. And I know a PG from a bunch of overpaid career backups. Finally, I won’t throw away all the draft choices on players that won’t contribute.

BK, for the good of the franchise and for the good of a city that really does love basketball, “GO! There’s nothing stopping you!”

Jeff, think I’d much rather see the media execs and the advertisers “…standing over a sink, washing and setting the hair of players for the Rutgers women basketball team.” You see pigs like Imus and the other sitcom idiot from a few months back are morons and irrelevant non-entities along the path of real progress. It’s the media executives and the advertisers that give credence to these cats and their venom. They do so - and will continue to - because of their unending and hardly principled pursuit of the income streams generated by virtue of giving entre’ to all manner of nonsense. These media and advertising jackals, if they could have made mad profit covering the despicable actions of Hitler’s SS from 1935 - 1945, would have willingly signed up without hesitation to provide minute-by-minute coverage of every ghastly act from the ghettos to the camps. No, don’t waste time on non-entities like Imus. Would have been far more beneficial this afternoon if the coach and players would have directed their attention to the execs and advertisers rather than giving the pig Imus an audience.

Yes, I think it’s time for a coaching change and GM change. This Hawks team is so inconsistant for a so called professional sports team. It’s really sad because I think Mike is a great guy and deserves better. But This is not working and it’s not fair to the Atlanta fans to continue to suffer year in and year out just to end up with another top draft pick. Something has to change and it starts with the head, not the players. I said from day one and begged, please don’t pass up Chris Paul, please. And I knew the Hawks was going to blow it. Who cares if he couldn’t defend right now, the guy makes plays. Isaiah Thomas couldn’t defend that well when he first got to the NBA. Not that Chris Paul would have the Hawks playing for NBA title, but you build around guys who can make plays. We just need a major change in coaching style and philosophy. the way this team is playing, bring the other Mike back (Fratello). It can’t get any worse. Gotta disagree with about 90% of the posts I had the patience to read—and agree with D Ellis: Woody gets a pass here. The only amazing thing is that, despite the losing, none of the players blew a gasket until now.

Billy and ownership must take the rap for our current state of affairs. Billy has done some good things (Joe, the Josh’s), but the bad (dumping Jason Terry AND Boris Diaw for peanuts, then passing over about 15 PGs now starting—AND starring—for teams throughout the league) outweighs it. Speedy is a $4 million Band-Aid—and the state of his knees all season means he is NOT the ouchless variety.

Finally, tho, Billy may need an incomplete: He’s hamstrung by an ownership “team” on which the supposed good guys are so inept they hire lawyers who can’t be bothered to read a contract.

By Hawks Fan

If the coach doesn’t produce, he must go. This is not Woodson’s second season and it’s not as if he has no talent.

This franchise is the new embarrassment for the league: A big market city with a horrible sports franchise. At least with the Braves and Falcons there is a chance to make the playoffs. Until the Hawks make a change w/ the coaching and GM, the ‘Clippers of the East’ will remain our tag. FYI: I can’t believe I continue to renew my season passes - but I keep hope!!!

The Hawks are showing improvement—slowly, but surely. The have some young studs. T-Lue is a good point guard. We need some size/strength at center that has shot blocking skills. Woodson deserves a couple of more years to continue to show improvement.

Hey Jeff

Over the last 3 years under Billy Knight the Hawks Team has made tangible progress. Lets be honest they came from 13 wins in yr 1, to 26 in year 2 to 29 in yr 3 (which would be more maybe 5-6 games if not for the rash of injuries). Also we have a lot of good talent on our team, the previous regime made bad choice after bad choice when it comes to roster moves from Shareef Abdur Rahim, to Glen Robinson, Isaiah Rider, Trading an icon like Dominique Wilkins, the whole Jon Koncak fiasco. Mike Woodson essentially has a team of kids and they have played hard for the most part, save for a some hiccups (this past Josh Smith blow-up included) and they flash nothing but potential. I think the few things Billy has mishandled in my opinion the PG situation, and last year’s draft pick we should have taken Randy Foye, or Patrick O’Bryant, or Marcus Williams, but we took Shelden Williams and he has struggled to say the least, but last time I checked one season does not a make a career. I think the stipulation we have with Phoenix is a necessary evil, because we have our cornerstone piece in Joe Johnson and sometimes as a G.M. you have to roll the dice. Boris Diaw is nothing more than a product of Steve Nash’s great PG play, look at how Boris Diaw played when he got his fat contract. The other pick Phoenix got was traded to Boston which subsequently turned out to be Rajon Rondo (another player whom we could have used). We will have a top 13 pick from Indiana which sould be probably 11 or 12 from the Al Harrington trade. Who is to say we will not have both of our picks this year, those lottery balls can bounce in a very strange way. Josh Childress, Marvin Williams, Josh Smith, Salim Stoudamire, Solomon Jones, Shelden Williams will and are getting better with each year of experience they get. So I think you guys should really look at things from a more optimistic point of view, Remember also Billy Knight has been hamstrung the Steve “Flea Bag” Belkin fiasco.

Come with me, to baseball and the NFL Draft. Write it all off to injury. Relax and see what they put together for next year.

Jeff, its not the first time we’ve heard that kind of crap from Tiger.

I heard him cussing and seen him slamming clubs lots of times on the course. Like I said the other day, arrogrant because he was not embarrassed.

Classless because he embarrasses himself and everyone around him.

Jack finished 2nd 19 times, you don’t think deep down he was mad as hell?

He and Arnie have class, meaning they do not show there character flaws on the golf course.

And that is what it is, a character flaw that Tiger needs to work on or he will never be THE GREATEST!

Golf is not just the number, its baout class and integrity!!

Quit giving him a pass, I heard Arnie say before that Tiger needs to work on that part of his game as well, grow up punk!

I agree with Clyde. Fire Billy and Woody. I am tired of complaining and saying the obvious. Bottom Line these two have to go.

Jeff, today the North Carolina Attorney General said that a lot of people owe apologies to a lot of other people now that the Duke lacrosse case is over. One person that comes to mind is you, and the other people are the players on the Duke Women’s lacrosse team. Care to apologize for your column that blatantly ripped on these women for standing up to people (like you) who couldn’t see this case for the farce that it was?

Billy Knight is effective at building and running an NBA team as I am effective at bringing about world peace and a cure for cancer. How does this walking abortion still have a freakin’ job?
