Palmer stepping into different realm

Terence Moore

In case you missed it, Arnold Palmer just announced to the world (and to himself) that he really is mortal.

Fifty years.

That’s how long Palmer played in the Masters. That’s 19 more years than Tiger Woods has been on earth. In other words, Palmer did the right thing by refusing to become the honorary starter at the Masters until now.

He wasn’t ready until now.

Prior to this year, Palmer was showing, even at 70-something, why he ranked among the greatest competitors of all-time in any sport during any era. The greatest competitors are into playing for something instead of for nothing. The thought of evolving into only a symbol of past glory is foreign to their systems.

So this is huge: Just before 8 a.m. on Thursday, when the 77-year-old Palmer walks to the first tee at Augusta National to strike the ball for his one and only time at this year’s Masters, he will hide his cape in the attic and become Clark Kent for the rest of his life. Gary Player, 71, said he’ll do the same in a couple of years by joining Palmer as an honorary starter.

Jack Nicklaus, 67, said he’ll never do such a thing. Despite retiring from Masters competition in 2005, immortality lives for Nicklaus — at least in his memory.

Somehow you’ve managed to insult both Palmer and Nicklaus.

WHO ASKED GARY??

Your stories should be about things in which you have some knowledge. Golf is way out of your league.

Terrence, I agree with Bobby J. You are the only writer in the south that can insult both Palmer and Nicklaus with your comments. I guess that is why Furman Bisher was honored today at The Masters and you never will be.

Palmer and Nicklaus are legends of the game of golf. I am trying to think of your (Terrence Moore) contribution to anything. Your self-importance is about it.

Well Jack was always more reserved & he’s not the type of guy that likes to be in the spotlight much.

Maybe you should have asked Jack why he didn’t want to be an honorary starter. Oh, that’s what a good reporter would have done. Sorry. I forgot!

Those two fellows, Jack and Arnie, have more integrity in their wrinkled little fingers than you have in your whole racist, idiot body.

You don’t know Jack! Nor do you know Arnie.

How did Palmer outclass Jack? Jack said no thanks…what is less classy about that?

I wish I could just type up something without any true merit and get paid. More power to you…

Wait a minute. You make no sense whatsoever. Palmer decides to get into the Masters when he isn’t good enough by becoming an honarary starter. Jack says that he wants to get in on his own merit and not because he is a legend. How does this makes Palmer classier than Jack?

In 2005 when I was in Iraq, I sent a request to Jack Nicklaus requesting an autograph. 2 months later I received an 8x10 personalized from him. Dont tell me Jack has no class. Go to hell, Terrence

Jack Nicklaus will always be “immortal” - and not just in his own mind.

Where do you come up with this garbage, Terence?

Well, well, well Mr.Moore. You did the obvious. This is why you’ll never, ever be in the same league as Furman. You’re trying to “create” a story while missing the simple “reality” of what has actually taken place. Try as you may, you can’t take away the “mutual respect” Arnie, Jack and Gary have for each other and the respect and admiration the “golfing public” has for all three. Every bucket sits on it’s own bottom and try as you may, “you” can’t change that with the stroke of a pen (or the click of a mouse)!!!

TM, you should issue an apology to Arnie and Jack for this tripe.

I’ll be surprised if 1 person comes on your side of this argument.

I always thought you were a hack and a turd. Thanks for confirming it.

May Tiger some day have 1/2 the class of Arnie and Jack and hopefully lose some of his arrogance!!

I’m sure Smoltz is thrilled that Tiger leet the world know he gambles on the golf course!!!!

Nicklaus not wanting to be trotted out like museum piece does not make him less classy than Palmer, in my opinion.

See how easy it is to disagree with the columnist without calling him names or insulting his intelligence.

Terrance you are so stupid!! Just b/c a guy does not want start The Masters the guy has no class? What kind of jerk off are you? Jack has more class and honor than you will ever have, not that you had any to start with you racist pig!!

Jack has done more for the game of golf than everyone and now you insult him like that you sick fool! You are such a racist! If people like you can call people racist than we can all call you one right back b/c thats what you are. Bobby J is right, you managed to insult both Jack and Arnie…nice work.

There is a reason Furman is honored down there and not you, it says volumes to the type of journalist each one of you are.

It pains me that the AJC lets you post this kind of garbage! The fact that they need news and coverage this bad to let a person like you write this stuff is obsurd! GOD!! How people like you get the jobs you have I just will never know. You are such a j******* and flat out racist!

LOL…Terrence Moore should start a fan club. TM may be the most hated person in the city of Atlanta. Cut him some slack. He cannot help he is ignorant.

Scratching my head, wondering why the Nicklaus-Arnie worshippers are so defensive… TM said nothing about them not having “class.” Didn’t you people learn how to read at whatever podunk school you went to?

Furman Bisher writes a polite column contrasting the personal styles of Billy Payne and Hootie Johnson. The column generates two congratulatory posts.

Terence Moore writes a polite column contrasting the personal styles of Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. The column generates twenty-five posts most of which call him names and/or question his intelligence.

Go figure.

I always read the comments to anything that Terrence writes. It always brings out the educated bigots who populate Atlanta. In this case, they have linked him to Mr. Bisher who happens to be very adept at doing what some of these idiots cannot do… hide their bigotry. Linking Arnie,Jack,Tiger, Furman, Smoltz, bigotry, gambling, etc. to being an honarary starter at Augusta really demonstrates that they have some issues that need to be taken to a shrink. Kimmer, where are you?

I read the entire column. I read every comment posted so far. Please show me where TM insults Arnie or Jack. The tone of the column is completely respectful. I don’t get it. Where is all this hate coming from?
