Atlanta’s unfit for Super Bowls
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Miami - Now this is the way it ought to be for a Super Bowl.
No snow (as in Detroit and Minnesota), and no ice (as in Atlanta or other places that don’t have an ocean or a gulf nearby).
It’s been a little chilly this week by South Florida standards. I even tried to turn on the heat in my hotel room the other day, but there was a problem: Most hotels in this city don’t have heat.
“Just flip off the air conditioning,” said the hotel desk clerk, giving her best way for guests to survive unseasonably low temperatures that were 50ish during the night and 60ish during the day.
That said, Miami is slated to have a high of 72 degrees today and near 80 degrees by Super Bowl Sunday.
I’m sure you already know that those numbers are blistering by, say, Georgia and Michigan standards. Atlanta’s predicted high this Wednesday is 44, with an expected low of a degree below freezing.
As for Detroit, don’t ask. Imagine sitting in the middle of an icicle. Imagine if the Super Bowl was in Detroit again this year.
Imagine the screams from fans who come to Super Bowls as a vacation.

Moore is a Uncle Tom. Please do not repaly to his column so we can get him out of here. He makes his living by throwing his own people under the bus and by fueling a arguement between races and the city. Go write for another city Mr. Moore. I am proud to be form the ATL and black, white, blue or purple. I love the people that live here. Stop trying to insult us and learn howe to deal with southern hospitality. Thanks

The Super Bowl in Miami is probably one of the best events you can attend! The weather and nightlife are second to none. However, don’t believe the hype, the Super Bowl in Jacksonville was nowhere near as bad as it was made out to be. Jax is spread out enough where there weren’t a lot of traffic jams and plenty of entertainment to go around.

I think it’s amazing how Atlanta is unfit for a super bowl yet it was snowing and the field resembled a swamp in Chicago but no one saw a problem with playing a conference championship game there. To me that’s a gimmick.

Terence, you are spot on. Like many I wish we could secure another Super Bowl for the city. But from a simply practical standpoint, why would the NFL want to hold it’s showcase event in a place where the weather is so highly unpredictable in the winter months (snow and ice tomorrow and wasn’t it 70 degrees a couple weeks ago)? The game has to be played indoors and most of the related activities have to be indoors as well. Not my idea of seeing the city. I think Arthur Blank is better served focusing on getting his team to the Super Bowl not getting his town to the Super Bowl.

Atlanta is a wonderful city and a great place to live. Yes, we have our issues like any other exploding population center. But the NFL needs to move the SB around to different cities besides “warm” weather locations. Football is meant to be played in the cold. I say Arthur Blank could put on a fantastic SB if the NFL would give him a chance!

Mr. Moore, I fail to see the comparison. The Super Bowl is about the game not the hoopla or the fans. As I remember the game is played on a field, and our field is inside a dome. That dome is climate controlled, so what’s the big deal? If the NFL were to use your twisted logic then the game would never be played outside the states of Florida, California, or Hawaii. Now that’s an idea! Let’s use your logic and make the game an annual event in Hawaii and then the fans can always be assured of a great “vacation”. (For a smart man you say some of the dumbest things).

Mr. Moore…you are by far the dumbest writer in the sports section. If you hate ATL so much get the hell out, I mean its not like anybody likes you. You never stick up for the A, you have no respect for Atlanta’s teams, players, fans or any of this city’s institutions. If they can have a damn super Bowl in Detroit, it can be in Atlanta. I went to “The U” in Miami and lemme tell you its strictly a vacation town. Once you’re there for 4 years, u can get sick of “North Cuba” very easily. You and Uncle Tom Jackson should have y’all own show on ESPN. I have no respect for your opinion…AT ALL

The horrible traffic is the reason the SUPER BOWL shouldn’t be here, not the weather.
I once had a date with a nice, young man named Mike Vick, and we had a great time. Apparently, however, the traffic was an issue for him.
When I mentioned after dinner that we could head up I-85 back to my house in Duluth for some coffee and cuddling, he strongly insisted on being allowed to head up the OLD DIRT ROAD instead.
Interstate traffic wasn’t even all that bad that night.
Go figure.

IT would be nice to have the super bowl in vegas …
but miami is always nice…but as for Atlanta… it is a great city but the problem is events planners and city government and the conventions and visitor bureaus and the APD dont communicate with each other.
IS IT REALLY NECESSARY TO SHUTDOWN A MAJOR STREET During a big event? YES - but at least offer Shuttle buses and or free/discounted MARTA.
Atlanta can do it again but it need to plan accordingly.

Aside from warm cities vs. cold cities for the location of the Super Bowl, let’s talk about the horrible half time shows with over-the-hill punk rockers like Janet Jackson, the Rolling Stones, or Prince. Why not have the two best college bands compete instead. Do an online poll during the college bowl games and let the top two bands rumble at the Super Half Time?

Calm down people! Atlanta probably should host a Super Bowl from time to time; we have to get lucky with the weather eventually (the last time we hosted it, the weeks before and after Super Bowl week were rather mild…..but that one week was frigid!).
Here’s what we should be hosting: the World Series (October here is gorgeous), the NBA finals and the Stanley Cup (early summer here is usually not too hot; the really hot, humid weather starts in July). But of course, to host these events, our team has to BE IN IT!

Mr. Moore I must agree with most of the other bloggers in response to your idiotic comment about the Super Bowl. First of all you’ve never really supported the Falcons, because if you did you would not make such insulting comments. You also have no respect for Mike Vick, and now show no respect for the City of Atlanta! I’m an African-American, and I too notice your racially divided comments. Miami is a better town than Atlanta to host a Super Bowl. That’s not a slant against Atlanta as a city, but it is merely the facts. Our traffic is a nightmare. It’s been freezing down here for the last few years around Super Bowl time. And our nightlife is drying up.
Personally, I would like to see the Super Bowl permanantly played in Las Vegas, but at least it should be somewhere warmer than Atlanta in late January.

Besides the unpredictable January weather in Atlanta, the GA Dome STINKS! NBA All-Star game at Phillips- YES, Superbowl at GA Dome- NO. Only way Atlanta will see another Superbowl is if they build a hightech indoor/outdoor stadium like in Scottsdale and the NFL rewards them as was the case in Detriot.

Apaul404…are you retarded?!?! The only reason the NFC championship game was played in Chicago is the fact that the Bears won home-field advantage. The NFL didn’t pre-select Chicago. Super Bowls sites are selected years in advance…so, of course, nice climate locales are going to be preferred (if the game is not to be played indoors).

I’m from Michigan, and while I’m a very proud native I’m also smart enough to know that no one wants to travel to a place like Detroit or Minneapolis in the dead of a midwestern winter for an event like the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is not just a game anymore, it’s a two week extravaganza. With this in mind, the NFL should rotate the game between L.A., San Diego, New Orleans, Tampa and Miami ONLY so that visitors are almost certainly assured of comfortable weather each year. Atlanta’s weather is too unpredictable…it could be 70 or it could be 35 during that period.

It’s a football game. Football players are used to playing in any condition, certainly in a dome. If cold weather in Atlanta (or Detroit or Minnesota) would hamper the weeklong parties that the celebrities, hangers-on and sportswriters (on expense accounts) have, then good! Maybe this ridiculous event would go back to being a football game. The teams show up a week before the game. Why? So sportswriters can talk to them and schmooze. Some coach some year will stand up to the NFL and take his team to the Super Bowl site on Thursday or Friday, like they would for any other game.
The parties and such are ancillary and of no consequence. The game is what matters. And that can go on in any weather.

This is the first time I’ve read one of T. Moore’s columns and I must agree. The Super Bowl should be held in a city with a warmer climate. Cities host the games in hopes of making a profit from its visitors. If the weather is awful… the rest is self explanatory. Remember, the Super Bowl is all about the game for fans and simple economics for the host.
By the way, isn’t there a curfew for party-goers in Atlanta. And no Sunday alcohol sales??? Thank your state and local government if we lose out on future events.

The only reason Detroit hosted Super Bowl 40 is because the Lions got a new stadium. There’s no way I can see Atlanta hosting the Super Bowl. Traffic alone can be argued for Atlanta not getting it. Does anyone remember NBA All-Star weekend a few years ago?
One could also argue some to look at how Atlanta handled the ‘96 Summer Olympics. They were deemed “exceptional,” not “the best games ever.” I wonder why…
Keep the Super Bowl in Miami, Pasadena, Phoenix…and eventually New Orleans (if the Saints get their lease status settled).

This is among the dumbest things I have heard. The media needs to realize the Super Bowl is about football not about the parties and the media playing golf and being happy because it is 75 degrees. Most football fans would just assume the game be played outside in ice, snow, and mud as they would in Miami and San Diego.
