With a win, Gators — shudder — will rule us all

Mark Bradley

Glendale, Ariz. — Florida, the reigning basketball national champion, can win the football national championship Monday night. No school has ever held concurrent ownership of the two biggest collegiate titles. Woe unto everybody else — Georgia fans and us neutrals alike — if it happens now. Florida has always acted as if it owns the world. If the Gators are champs in the two sports that matter most, won’t it mean they do own the world?

“Pretty much,” said Max Starks, the Pittsburgh Steelers lineman who stopped by his former school’s practice Saturday. “It would mean the Gators definitely have the edge on everyone athletically.”

Granted, there are Florida fans who aren’t insufferable. They, alas, number in single digits. And it would be different if Southern Cal or Wisconsin or some other distant school did the double because fans of those programs tend to keep their distance. Florida borders on our fair state and sends a massive number of its infernal grads across the border. And Florida, as we know, has come to own Georgia in the two major sports.

Florida is already too close for comfort. Now imagine if Florida topples Ohio State.

Jeff Dantzler has. He’s part of the Georgia basketball broadcast team and a columnist for the magazine Bulldawg Illustrated. He spoke Saturday from, of all places, Gainesville, Fla., where the hated Gators were about to beat Georgia in basketball for the sixth time in succession.

Dantzler confessed to being torn, if only slightly, about the BCS title game. “There’s a part of me that knows it would be nice for our conference,” he said. And how big a part is that? One measly corpuscle? “It’s about 5-1 [against Florida].”

Some schools can win without leaving an aftertaste. Florida is not such a school. No, it hasn’t been caught cheating in recruiting lately, but the Gators have such inherent advantages — academics, facilities, fan base, state population, even the bloomin’ weather — that they don’t need to bend rules to ruffle feathers. Said Dantzler: “They’ve definitely got a swagger. Some would call it arrogance.”

Well, yes. Steve Spurrier played and coached there. Rex Grossman smirked there. Dwayne Schintzius grew hair there. Of all the qualities that can be ascribed to Gator Nation, humility would be at the bottom of the list.

To wit: When a correspondent offered congratulations immediately after Florida’s basketball championship, here was athletics director Jeremy Foley’s magnanimous response: “Now take back all that [stuff] you’ve been writing.” (And this to the only columnist in the world who defended Foley after he hired Ron Zook.)

Part of the dislike for the Gators, Dantzler suggested, has been “the deep-down fear of how good they could become.” Sure enough, here they are, holders of a powerfully won basketball title and no worse than a touchdown underdog against unbeaten Ohio State. Going beyond Monday night, Dantzler looks to Oct. 27, 2007: “It would be gut-wrenching walking into Jacksonville with them having won 15 of the last 17 [Georgia-Florida games] and having them do the Gator Chomp and wave two national championship rings in our face.”

But the indignity of continual Gator coronations could hit home even before that. There’s a good chance Florida could become the first school in 15 years to stack basketball titles back to back, and if the football team wins in the desert the hoop Gators could, come April, be going not for a mere double but for a triple in, of all places, the Georgia Dome.

Said Starks: “That would be a great day if we could run the trifecta.”

Great for him, yes. Great for all Gators, sure. Gut-wrenching for everybody else.

Although I really don’t have much use for the Gators in the regular season I must give them my support over the Yankee-eyes (yep, like the song says, “the SOUTH is going to do it again”). If the Gators win, I actualy hope the Coaches votes will give the National Championship to the only 13-0 team in the nation, BOISE STATE, even if they do reside north of the Mason Dixon Line. Their game in the Fiesta Bowl was one of the best I have ever seen. Those guys have heart. So let’s pull for Florida and help BOISE STATE. Those guys deserve the National Championship if Ohio State loses. Go Gators and good luck BRONCOS.

Sorry Mark, but I disagree. Growing up in J’ville I know just how arrrogant they can be; however, this season we’ll be ready and will win the game. I want to beat the defending National champs. Mark Richt, IMO, has shown more personal growth as a football than any year he’s been in Athens. His staff is now really one of the best and they were good before. Question: can someone tell me when the last time was that MR followed up a FG. with an onside kick? Help me bacause I reall don’t remember. In the 2nd half we saw just the begining of what the future holds with Bobo opening up the play book. Martinez even tighten up the D in the last 3 games. Let the REptiles win Monday night and then We’ll take the title away from them. Yes like Bobo and others ,I can be a little aggressive.

BUZZ FAN

Have to agree with you BUZZ FAN Boise State/Oklahoma game best i’ve seen too. I think they deserve a share of the title regardless of who wins Monday between OhioSt. and Florida. The SEC side of me wants Florida to win, on the other hand the side of me that makes that LONG drive home from Jacksonville every year wants Ohio St. to win. Hard one to pick, thats for sure.

Hey Buck hope your doing well. I read somewhere the last time we tried a onside kick was in 2004, article didn’t mention which game though. like you i believe 2007 will be our year in Jacksonville. Can’t wait to see some of the freshmen that redshirted this year play, Moreno, Reshad Jones, Dewberry. Agree with you on CMR and the personal growth. Think maybe now he’ll have more time to devote to the whole team instead of running the offence. I think deep down he had something to do with the defence stepping up the last 3 games too.

Nothing’s funnier than rednecks talking trash about 18-22 year old kids they don’t know. How do any of you know what will happen? Do you play? Do you coach? I enjoy pickup basketball. Sometimes it seems as though the teams are unfair when the game starts, but damn if the “lesser” team doesn’t win sometimes. There is another team competing too, morons, and many are equal or better than UGA. To suggest that UGA will win a game more than a year from now suggests: a) you fail to consider the other team’s preparation b) you sadly overstate the talent on “your” team that you have never contributed to outside of a dollar and a yell, since good preparation guarantees a win, and c) you are a pathetic loser with way too much self-worth at stake in kids playing sports before they are old enough to drink and need to stay the hell away from my daughter.

I love football, college and pro. I love it for the competition-it’s the best reality TV available. My day or life doesn’t change with the outcome of the game, however. Find some other ways to enrich your lives!! “I can’t wait till our 19 year olds play those from UF?” Give me a break you sad, sad souls.

Mark, winning in both major sports in one season may be like Tiger Slam. It is amazing, first time, send them an email of congradulatory. However, that doesn’t even come close to winning ten national championships in 12 years (ala John Wooden). Don’t degrade it, but don’t fall down and worship it either. As far as Florida owning the world, that’s just plain stupid.

Mark, Mark, Mark … what are we going to do with you? Florida fans are no more insufferable than Dawg fans were when UGA’s football team was beating UF on a routine basis in the 70’s and 80’s. What goes around comes around, and I constantly remind my Gator friends and acquaintances of that when they start to act as if the annual win in Jacksonville is already in the bank.

Given the quality of football competition in the SEC, it would be easier to be a repeat national football champion than to be a repeat SEC champion, so it’s unlikely that some sort of Gator dynasty is blossoming; everything will be back to normal next season, with every game a scrap and a potential upset.

But, hey, Mark, before you start giving Gator fans their usual raft of you-know-what for their perceived arrogance, let the Gators, team and fans, enjoy this one. The MNC game hasn’t even been played yet, and you’re already running the what-if scenarios. Last time I checked, the Gators are the underdogs to the almighty Buckeyes, darlings of the media. If the Gators actually pull off he upset, they will have earned it the hard way, and be deserving of some kudos. Gator fans absorbed nearly 60 years of derision from our fellow SEC fans before our team won a conference title that they could keep. Cocky maybe, but Spurrier’s kids earned it on the field, and so have Meyer’s. So, grant our kids their day in the sun … there will be plenty of time to pile on if they lose, and plenty more time to remind Gators that nothing lasts forever if the UF team does win in Glendale.

Either way, there will still be a UF-UGA game to be played in Jacksonville next fall, and despite recent history, the Dawgs will have their chances.

Mark, I’ve been reading your stuff (intermittently, thank god)for the better part of two decades. Given your UGA bias over that time, the only thing you say in this column that is even mildly surprising is “…us nuetrals…”

The only times you’ve been neutral when a Georgia event is played are the annual Red & Black games. I don’t mind you being a mindless homer, just admit it. Come on out from behind the apron strings of neutrality and say it: “I am a big Dawg and no longer a closet Gator hater.”

I lived in south Florida for three years in the 80s and the Gators fans were the worst: you would have thought they had the trophy room of Notre Dame, Southern Cal or Alabama.

Everyone else in the known universe knows better.

It’s a shame when fans of other SEC schools won’t pull for one of its members to win a national title, but I just can’t do it. My attitude doesn’t have anything to do with my being a Dawg fan. I’ve cheered for LSU when it won, cursed the BCS when Auburn wasn’t given a chance play for the title.

Hell, I sat through Tennessee’s win over FSU and was more than happy the Vols won the trophy.

Florida is another case. I even had the lunacy to bet $500 with the sports radio guy that Tracy Ham would put up 300 yards when Georgia Southern played at the Swamp. The Gators won, but Tracy performed beyond expectations,

Now that was a great early Christmas present!

Y’all sound scared. Who cares that they have the number 1 recruiting class. You think a team like Boise State is any where near that compared to OU? It’s not like UGAy is scraping the bottom of the barrel for recruits. You guys are going to have a strong team next year - buck up and have some confidence. I’ve never heard Dawg fans be such whiners. Y’all better shape up before Vince Dooley comes to your house and knocks you in the teeth. Heck, we’ve lost to you puppies six years straight - but you better beleive every year, we’re going to go to the game singing our songs and telling you how we’re going to “whip your a**”. Look at SC fans - you can’t be in the SEC and whine. There’s no crying in the SEC! Punks.

As a lifelong Georgia fan who grew up in Athens, living in Gainesville is quite possibly the hardest thing I have ever done. I live here now and I almost feel as though I am the gator good luck charm. As soon as I moved here, they beat UGA when they shouldn’t have (again) when Shockley went down, win a B-Ball title, get a great recruiting class, and are about to compete for THE National title. I don’t understand why because it simply isn’t that great. The weather blows, its always 90 and humid. Gainesville isn’t all that nice, more homless people then I have ever seen, the bar scene is nothing to write home about. Possibly the dumbest exercise science graduates I have ever met, definitely done my share of firing. The fans are jumping on that bandwagon faster than a Miami Heat bandwagon. Lets just hope the wheels fall come Monday. The fans are the most obnoxious and classless I have ever met and when they all put on their Orange and blue, they look like a combo of fudge packing prisoners and $2 street corner whores. I will say at least the female student body (for the most part) is easier and cheaper than a $2 whore. Thats gotta be great for recruiting. So all those SEC fans who are rooting for the Gators, DON’T!! If you lived in this God forsaken land of Orange and Blue, you would root against the Gators in chinese checkers if it was possible.

Kudos to UF and for any school that has pulled off the double whammy in the two major sports. And yes, they do have inherent advantages, save the actual locale (Aesthetically and otherwise, Gainsville does not hold a candle to a Chapel Hill, Athens, Chrlottesville or even Tuscaloosa). But tell me, what exactly did UF do in any major sport pre-1990 — without cheating?

Screw ESPN. i hate the gaytors. always have and always will. but i am hoping they kill ohio state. i think ohio state & the big 10 are a bunch of overrated slow pokes. florida will kill the buckeyes. unfortunately, we will have to deal with the consequences of their gloating & annoying fans. oh well. i would rather the sec win than any of these other garbage conferences. uga, florida, south carolina, tennesee, bama, aubarn, lsu, arkansas, mark right, urban legend, steve superior, the great pumpkin fulmer, nick satan, tommy tupperware, lester miles, houston deez nutts, can any other conference even come close to comparing? even a legendary name like shula is not good enough for the sec. to hell with ESPN. their coverage of BAMA, Satan, and the SEC is so biased and anti-SEC, it is disgusting.

For the record I’m a Gator fan who truly believe that you can’t beat Georgia bad enough or often enough. But I’ve never failed to pull for Georgia in any bowl game.

Why? Not only because of the SEC tie, but also because Georgia is our most traditional and heated rival.

It’s always interesting to note how little Georgia fans fretted over UF in the ’70s & ’80s when the Dawgs won 15 of 20 games in Jacksonville. Now that the tide has turned … oooh now UF is just too good, too powerful and has all those advantages.

You need your own Steve Spurrier to remind you all, as Steve reminded us in 1990, of all the good things Georgia (state & university) has going for it.

Quit whining and go to work.

My response to Bradley, “Hey numbnuts! How do you define ‘recently?’”

It was over 20 years ago that Florida was properly charged for recruiting violations. We paid our penalty.

It’s pathetic that a closet homer like you would hide behind “journalistic neutrality” in making your snide, partisan comments about the best football team in the best football conference!

Georgia should share in the title. They did their part by kicking VaTech, and are a vital part of the best conference in America.

Alot of people say “I just want to see the SEC win.” The same people say “I pull for Tech when their not playing Georgia”. That is bull——. That is not truly a person who bleeds red and black. IT MAKES ME SICK. The SEC has long been a proven conference. We don’t nee Florida to win the national title to help us out. I hope Florida gets dumped by 3 touchdowns. There goes the SEC’s respect. Not hardly. Florida is not that good. They put up 38 points in the Dome and next thing you know they are world beaters. Shouldn’t have beat South Carolina. Barely beat FSU. Barely Beat the Dawgs on the count of a fumble return. Got handled by Auburn who we whipped. Barely took one from Vanderbilt. I know we lost to Vandy it happens every blue moon. But we are talking about a team playing for the national title. Most games they struggled to post 20 on the board. To win a national title you have to be a good and lucky. I would guess that most of you “true DAWGS” are not even graduates of UGA. In my experience, ALL schools have obnoxious fans, most of which are not graduates of the school they cheer for, much less college graduates at all.

Super 100 by states: Florida-24, Georgia-15 Louisiana-10, Alabama 6, Tenn. 3. This is why Tenn recruits nation wide, weak high school football., Florida, USC,Notre Dame and Texas have strong nation wide alumni ties, LSU is central located with Texas. Of course, the main ingredient in recruiting is your school, facilities and coaching. Miss. was once a hot-bed for Auburn, but went to greener pastures in Florida, UGA does not recruit Alabama , LSU gets top athletes out Ark. Today, Florida is top SEC school in all sports and this helps recruiting, but “every dog has its day” and hopefully the baton will change to Auburn!!!!

You red (and black) headed stepchildren of the SEC should welcome your new Gator overlords.

LOL! Yeah, sure Boise deserves the title!!! Yeah we didnt play one ranked team all season, but we’re the only undefeated team, we’re the best! lol! I would think that dawg fans would be upset if boise got the title, because even UGA would of gone undefeated with boise’s schedule. remember last year boise when you played UGA? lol!

this article is a joke, and you know it! you should really stop being biased. if Florida wins, they are obviously the best in the country. if OSU wins, they are the best in the country.

UGA, I have a solution—How About No Team Can Recruit Outside Of Their State???? You say you want loyalty, well that will do it. You do like that idea don’t you?? Only Georgia high school players play for Georgia, No Florida, South Carolina or Tenn.

Stop whinning and come beat us in Jax. Get a coach who can keep his recruits at home. I live in Savannah and love it when a Dawg fan starts to argue with me about how bad Florida SUCKS. Give me a break. I pulled for Georgia when they came back and beat Va Tech. Its good for the conference. And anybody is crazy if they think Boise St. should have a shot at Ohio St. or Florida. Of all people, you Dawgs should know that they suck and play nobody. Their coach just happened to get the full potential out of his players in that one game against the Big12 Champion Oklahoma in a down year for the Big12. And all of you Dawg fans can watch Reggie Nelson decapitate someone tom night just like he did against yall. Georgia needs to figure out a way to out recruit Meyer and beat em in Jax. Richt’s been there for some time now and is gettin killed in Recruiting by a guy who’s in his 2nd year. Stop whinning and put a decent team on the field to challenge us for once

Mark,

You think Gator fans are arrogant? Georgia was the reason every Gator fan said, “Wait ‘til next year,” until the ’90s brought us relief - and bulldog fans took every opportunity to rub it in. Now the shoe is on the other foot - justice for decades of suffering. Quit your whining, and don’t claim to be a “neutral.” You write for a newspaper in Atlanta. If you wrote for the Gainesville Sun, you’d be singing a different tune. You’re a bulldog, so accept it, admit it and move on.

Brooks,

YOU are a joke - obviously YOU are a sidewalk Georgia fan - do you want cheese and crackers to go with your whin? Get on board and back the GATORS in the NC game.

David Did you really call GA fans redneckish? As a mullet bearing, cut-off blue jeans wearing, trailer living, Steve Spurrier loving FL fan, where do you get off calling ANYBODY redneck? (Not that Ga fans aren’t rednecks….they are.)
