Filling in Blank’s slate
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Before Arthur Blank begins interviewing coaches, he must first question himself. In the wake of Jim Mora’s flameout, the owner needs to ask:
• Have I overrated Michael Vick? Have I sunk $130 million into a quarterback who, as many insist, isn’t a quarterback? Is he really a coach-killer? Is he destined to exit the NFL having never progressed beyond the Fun To Watch stage?
• Have I overrated our talent and, by extension, Rich McKay? Are recent returns a reflection of the players or the coach? Having just fired the coach, haven’t I already cast my lot with McKay? But if we’re 7-9 next year with a new set of coaches, does the GM likewise get the gate? And do his maladroit first-round receivers go with him?
• Speaking of which, is Vick the kind of quarterback who makes all receivers look bad? (The high-salaried Peerless Price didn’t blossom here, did he?) Is Vick too fundamentally flawed as a passer ever to complete a reasonable percentage? Or is his completion percentage low because he hasn’t had the right coaching?
• Don’t I automatically disqualify any candidate (a.) whose dad has a radio show, or (b.) who keeps a University of Washington helmet on display?
• At this late date, haven’t I gone too far with Vick to stop now? Isn’t No. 7 essentially the No. 2 man — after me, but ahead of McKay and the coach, whoever he is — in Flowery Branch? Aren’t he and I partners in the sense Bernie Marcus and I were? Having coddled Vick to the point of not reprimanding him publicly for flipping off our fans, do I dare do anything to alienate him now?
• Given all that, do I have any choice but to hire a head coach who has a feel for quarterbacks? (What was I thinking, hiring a defensive coordinator the last time?) If I’m married to Vick and his production, don’t I owe it to myself to get as creative as possible? Don’t I want a head coach to do for me what Sean Payton has done for Tom Benson?
• Isn’t this the first thing I need to ask every candidate: “Can you win a Super Bowl with Michael Vick, and if you don’t think you can, why are you here?” And isn’t this the next thing: “What will you do to make Vick the player his talent insists he should be?”
• Since everything here is about the quarterback, is there any reason not to hire Norm Chow, who’s better with quarterbacks than anybody in the history of football? Since Vick is the centerpiece of my franchise, don’t I want him guided by someone who has coached both Steve and Vince Young? Since I have an asset of irregular dimensions, don’t I want the architect who has the greatest familiarity with that template?
• Is there any way I can read the list of other Chow pupils — Gifford Nielsen, Jim McMahon, Marc Wilson, Robbie Bosco, Ty Detmer, Philip Rivers, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Steve McNair — and not believe the man has a singular feel for the most important position? Is there any way I can view what Chow just did with the rookie Vince Young and not believe he’d do at least as much with the veteran Vick?
• Even if Chow’s playbook contains elements of the locally dreaded West Coast offense, doesn’t his recent work prove he fits his schemes to the quarterback, not the other way around?
• Does it matter that Chow is 60 and has never been a head coach? Did it matter that Sean Payton was 42 and had never been a head coach? Having had to apologize for Mora’s smart-alecky excesses, wouldn’t a more seasoned man be most welcome? And didn’t a 63-year-old just lead the Chargers to the NFL’s best record? And am I not 64 myself?
• Wasn’t it Mora who insisted offensive linemen never have anything to say? Wouldn’t it be funny if Chow, who played guard at Utah, gets to say, “I’m proud to be the new coach of the Atlanta Falcons”? Well, wouldn’t it?

Read it here first. As long as Michael Vick is quarterback, the Falcons will fail.
Blank can grasp the concept of “sunk cost” and dump Vick, or he can continue to throw money at that lost cause.
As we all know, it is Blank’s to choose…

What if we offered Mike Vick to the Oakland Raiders for their 1st Rd pick. We could select CJ and let Schaub be the starting QB?? Maybe we could get another good RB to go with Norwood at the 10th spot.

The Dirty Birds should hire Urban Meyer—trade Vick to the Raydas for draft picks—-cut Keith Brooking—Sign Matt Schaub long term—buy a muzzle for D-Hall—get a bottle of stick’em for Alge Crumpler—send Roddy White to receivng school—find ways to get Jerious Norwood the ball at least 15 times a game—cattle prod Arthur Blank when he attempts to prowl the sidelines—fully understand the objective of the game is to score more points than your opponent.

Isn’t it funny how everyone thinks the Raiders might actually want Mike Vick?
Hardly. Look at who they have a shot at … Brady Quinn.
Gee, so many of us agree MV7 is not the answer at QB, so why would we think someone is going to give up #1 on draft day to get him.

Is there a collective loss of minds in Atlanta? Last season while the Falcons were starting 6-2 another team started 7-4.
This season we started 5-2, the other team started 8-4. The Falcons finished 8-8 and 7-9. The other team finished 9-7 both seasons. The other team..
THE DALLAS COWBOYS.
Michael Vick with his human faults has won two playoff games while the Cowboys haven’t won a playoff game in ten years, TEN YEARS.
This is the NFL today, good sometimes, suck sometimes. Stop all of the damned name calling and let’s try and look to the future. Whatever it is it won’t be perfect because the league is set up to run exactly as it is now.
Blank, Snyder and Jones cannot buy a championship. Nobody can, it’s not baseball. Enjoy it or stop watching it but when it comes to trashing everything about the team please shut the hell up!

If we had a top pick in the draft, the team should draft a stud defensive lineman. We need size on the line. There is no way the Falcons draft anpther wide out.
Hopefully Vick will break his leg again and we can move foward. The reason he is still here is to keep the black fans happy because Atlanta is a black city.

We better get Chow before the Cardinals reunite him with Matt Leinart. Blank and McKay - chop, chop or Chow is history.
And his age means nothing. He’s still got many good years ahead, which just happen to coincide with the rest of Mike Vick’s career. In Blank terms, he’s our $130 million investment, so we must get the best asset manager we can find.

You guys who keep insisting that we trade Vick are complete and utter idiots.
Not because you want to trade a talent like that who is one good coach away from trading in on the promise of his first year as a starter.
It’s because of the salary cap stoopids!!!
I mean you dumb@$$ rednecks are the worst.
Vick isn’t going anywhere. You can wish it. You can plead for it. You can hold your Klan rallies in Forsythe Co. and hang Vick in effigy, and none of it will matter.
Because of the massive cap hit that this team would take, and they can’t take it because they’re not going to have enough room to trade Vick and sign another QB, even if it is your Great White Hype aKa The Next Doug Johnson aKa Matt Fraud.
Guys, he’s not going anywhere.
You people are straight-up retarded.

I usually don’t agree with Mark Bradley, and hadn’t thought of Norm Chow in the light Mark portrays him. If Jimmy Johnson doesn’t want it, Norm Chow’s a no-brainer as he’s a QB developer. Plus, he’s a minority candidate (which is second, because he’s qualified, minority or not)and that fits well with Atlanta’s history as a racially welcoming city. Pay him the dough to come, and hire away Mike Singletary as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. Now that’s a no-brainer. Our offense would be the baddest on the planet in no time, and our defense would the toughest, most focused and meanest bunch in the league.
Arthur, please make it happen!!

I can certainly admit that I have no clue who the front runners should be. I do believe the Falcon’s need a tough coach to reign in the whopping egos on the Falcon’s roster. The nuts have certainly been running the asylum. Obviously, they need someone who can work with Vick as well.
Given a slobber knocking defense and protection, Vick should be able to get it done. Hopefully, anyway.
So, who fits the criteria?

When Schaub’s in the game, the other guys are not waiting for him to make plays, because physically, that’s not his game. Instead of watching him like they do Mike, they do their thing. The whole team looks different when he’s in the game. Still, got to agree with BirdDog, due to salary cap, there’s no way we can trade Mike. Raiders would take him. The guy’s one of the top physical talents in the game, great arm, but guys depend on him too much.

Norm Chow as head coach, Singletary as assistant head coach, defensive coordinator. Chow coaches for 4-5 years and then Singletary takes over. Chow’s got a degree in Educational Psychology, so he not only will get the offense on track, he’s the right guy to keep the offense’s head on straight and receivers confident. Singletary’s the guy we need to bring toughness and discipline. Good cop, bad cop. I can’t imagine anyone not jumping at the chance to play for either of these guys. We need the fresh energy both would bring.

Thank you BirdDawg, I’ve tried to say the same thing many times, but these knuckleheads just don’t get it. Blank blew it by giving Vick the huge contract and taking away any flexibility with the cap. Rookie owner. Blank just hasn’t learned yet. He blew it with Price, gave Mora a contract extension, signed Vick to the huge contract. He needs to quit meddling and let the football people do their jobs. Be a real CEO, give direction, give goals, provide the parameters and then let the professionals do their job.

Bradley catering to the silly masses. Why all the focus on Vick? He isn’t the problem. How about the little bitty running backs, no hand receivers, and weak pass blocking. Vick is the best thing to happen to Falcon Football and football in general in this city. The abberation that was 1998 notwithstanding. The man gives us a legitimate shot at the Superbowl every year. How about the overpriced outside/middle linebacker? The free agent bust middle linebacker. Will you all not be satisfied until we go back to the empty dome, local blackouts and not even being showed on the national highlight shows. You all are dreaming that you actually thought pro football even really existed in this town before Mike Vick. Yeah, there were flashes, but honestly give both sides and not just spin of the folks who hate to see a black QB have as much power as his white counterparts. Vick needs to improve but its not as bad as some of you make it. The man has given us more highlights in his 6 years than we had in the previous 30 plus. Vick is no different than Manning, Delhomme, Brees are Bulger. Good players just have to get the right coaching and surrounding cast. Get past the man looks already and recognize the positives. Why should this man support a guy who obviously told his father that he was a coach killer? You media types pounded Mora relentless and now you want to shift the blame to Vick. There is a small fraction of white men over 30 who can’t take a young black QB with power. That includes the former pocket QB’s who didn’t have the same talent set. It takes guts to be a pioneer which is what Vick and Arthur Blank are and they will be successful, just give them the same time you are giving those that look a little more like you.

You’re article is hilarious. You’ve peeked at responses to other AJC blogs and started typing, very inspiring. First off, the Raiders would love MV7. Secondly, he has the support of the owner and management, he doesn’t need ours. You fools don’t get it. No matter how much you HATE him, he’s not going anywhere. Even if he did, He’s got $130 million reasons to stay here and stick it in your faces. All of your rants on thug this and thug that, yet you call for a QB who’s only proven that he can’t control himself in public without assaulting someone. Mike proved himself under Reeves. His regression has been a result of coaching and lack of team effort. He put up career numbers and you’d add 6 more TD’s that were flat out dropped. If McKay is smart, I’d figure out a way to get trade Schaub and Shockley to position themselves to take JeMarcus Russell 6’6” 260 QB for the future or Chris Leak in the 2nd or 3rd round. Having these hometown boys on the squad jades your vision. I could name 31 QB’s annually who fail to win the Super Bowl. Most never get a sniff. Nobody’s trying to trade the Manning brothers, or Favre (who has sucked for 1/2 a decade). Teams win Super Bowls, not individuals. Figure it out. Like I said yesterday the TRADE MATT SCHAUB COUNTDOWN has begun, 116 days and counting. I can’t wait…..

Well said “E” at 10:50PM Blog< I feel that great things are ahead for the Falcons if the right “Leader is in place. Please know fans that I am not saying Vick is the Best QB, but he does have the making of one. Payton Manning has winning seasons every year but can’t seem to win the Big Game in the playoffs. Yea I said it Mr. Mora “Sr.”, Playoffs?? are you kidding me?? Anyway, a coach is the leader, and by the way folks… Mr. Blank can walk the side lines any time he gets ready to. When you think about his investments, he is the Man with the Money baby. The Ultimate Trophy is named after a head coach who was a leader remember,.. Vince Lambardi, this is why it will take a coach like this to lead a team like the Falcons to the Big Game. This coach whom Mr. Blank will choose will be far from a Mora image I hope. He will have to be a Man that is serious about this game and know how to speak. And one that does not only have the Playoffs in Mind but the Super Bowl Baby!!”“ Even if it means getting rid of some players and other coaches like Knapp. No offense!! Let’s win them “All”.

The Falcons will have a damn good coach before the next season starts..no doubt about that. Vick isn’t going anywhere. They already said he was the franchise on TV due to the fact that he’s got the fat contract. That’s why Schaub will never start in ATL. Schaub + 3rd or 4th round draft picks to the Raiders = Randy Moss or Raiders 1st round pick and select Calvin Johnson or a damn good Safety. Just sit back and let it happen. Something big is going to happen either way. It does no good arguing about it. Still have a long way until next season. Falcons in 2007

Can someone tell me who this Calvin kid is people are clamoring about drafting. my understanding is that he is a WR. you DO NOT draft WR’s in the first round, see falcons current bust receivers and last round draft pick Colston for New orleans. You can pick up receivers in the later rounds. we probably need to draft a lineman, either offensive or defensive. or a cornerback that can cover.

I WILL REFRAIN FROM MAKING ANY COMMENTS THAT APPEAR BIASED OR UNFAIR. MANY OF THESE BLOGS HAVE RACIAL UNDERTONES WHICH IS MOST UNFORTUNATE. WE SHOULD BE JUDGING PLAYERS…AND PEOPLE IN GENERAL BY THEIR HEART AND NOT THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN.
MICHAEL VICK HAS THE OPPORTUNITY IN HIS PROFESSION TO REACH YOUNG PEOPLE OF ALL RACES…SETTING AN EXAMPLE OF HOW TO LEAD WITH INTEGRITY AND PURPOSE.
SEVERAL BLOGGERS HAVE SPENT MUCH OF THEIR TIME SPLITTING HAIRS OVER THE MERIT OF HIS STATS. LET’S EXAMINE IN A HEALTHY WAY ANOTHER MORE IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE FALCONS QUARTERBACK.
MY PLAYING EXPERIENCE WAS THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL AND WHILE MY STATS ARE A DISTANT MEMORY…THE LESSONS LEARNED FROM COACHES AND FELLOW PLAYERS ARE UTILIZED DAILY.
LISTED BELOW ARE SEVERAL INSTANCES INVOLVING MICHAEL VICK WHICH HAVE BROUGHT DIFFERENT DYNAMICS TO THE CONSTANT PRO-VICK/ANTI-VICK DEBATE. WITHOUT PASSING JUDGMENT…PLEASE EXAMINE THESE OBSERVATIONS AND THEN THOUGHTFULLY RENDER YOUR OPINION.
1) VICK WAS HESITANT TO RETURN FROM INJURY DURING REEVES LAST SEASON. HE SAID FEELING 100% WAS THE ONLY WAY HE WOULD PLAY. FAVRE AND MCNAIR LIMP TO THE FIELD ON A WEEKLY BASIS. IF VICK RETURNS…DOES HIS INFLUENCE GARNER ENOUGH WINS WHERE BLANK CAN’T FIRE REEVES?
2) VICK ADMITS TO EVERYONE THAT HE DIDN’T GIVE HIS BEST EFFORT VS CAROLINA IN WEEK 17 LAST SEASON. HOW MANY OF US WOULD KEEP OUR JOBS IF WE OPENLY ADMITTED THIS MISDEED?
3) BEFORE THE 2006 SEASON…VICK URGES FALCONS BRASS TO LET HIM “BE MICHAEL VICK” AND RUN THE BALL MORE LEAVING BEHIND THE POCKET-GEARED WEST COAST OFFENSE. AFTER A FEW EXCELLENT GAMES IN WHICH THE OFFENSE WAS CLICKING… HE COMPLAINS TO CRIS CARTER ON HBO THAT HE WANTS TO PASS MORE. HE HAS THE RIGHT TO EXPRESS HIS OPINIONS BUT THROWING TEAMMATES AND COACHES UNDER THE BUS SURPRISED ME.
4) WHY WAS TERRY BRADSHAW SO APOLOGETIC ON FOX NFL SUNDAY..JUST 1 WEEK AFTER EXPRESSING HIS DISMAY OVER VICK’S PUBLIC REMARKS? ANYONE WHO’S EVER LACED UP THE CLEATS KNOWS THE TIME HONORED TRADITION OF KEEPING THINGS INSIDE THE LOCKER ROOM. DID SOMEONE CALL FOX EXECUTIVES AND DEMAND AN ON-AIR APOLOGY?
5) VICK FLIPS OFF THE GEORGIA DOME FANS FOLLOWING A GAME. HE THEN ISSUES TWO LUKEWARM APOLOGIES AND DONATES TO CHARITY AT THE URGING OF BLANK. FUNNY HOW PEOPLE OVERLOOK ALL THE WONDERFUL DEEDS FROM WARRICK DUNN AND KEITH BROOKING…IT’S BECAUSE THEY GIVE FROM THEIR HEART AND NOT FOR PUBLIC RELATIONS PURPOSES.
6) JIM MORA SR MAKES HIS IMFAMOUS ON-AIR REMARK. WHETHER OR NOT ONE AGREES WITH THIS ASSESSMENT ISN’T IMPORTANT. FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND FREEDOM OF THE PRESS ARE BASIC CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS WE ENJOY AS AMERICANS. WITH THE RIGHT TO EXPRESS AN OPINION COMES RESPONSIBILITY… BUT OUR DIVIDED COUNTRY HAS FAR MORE PRESSING ISSUES THAN IF MORA SR CROSSED THE LINE. SPORTS RADIO AND TELEVISON COMMENTATORS ARE PAID TO MAKE OBSERVATIONS AND DRAW BIG RATINGS. MANY STAR PLAYERS ACROSS THE NFL ARE BASHED WEEKLY…MANY TIMES UNFAIRLY BY THE MEDIA. WHY DOES THE ELDER MORA GET FIRED FOR DOING HIS JOB AT FOX RADIO? ANOTHER CALL SIMILAR TO THE ONE POSSIBLY SENT TO BRADSHAW’S BOSS?
SUMMARY…
WHY DOES MICHAEL VICK’S CHARACTER QUESTIONS RECEIVE A HALL PASS FROM THE MEDIA WHILE OTHER NFL PLAYERS ARE BEING HELD TO A DIFFERENT STANDARD. THERE ARE MANY PLAYERS JUST AS GIFTED THAT DON’T GET THE SPECIAL TREATMENT HE GARNERS.
ONE LAST QUESTION TO CONSIDER… HOW WOULD VICK HANDLE PLAYING UNDER TOUGH-MINDED COACHES LIKE TONY DUNGY OR HERMAN EDWARDS? BOTH DEMAND SUCCESS ON FIELD AND ACTING LIKE A GENTLEMAN IN THE COMMUNITY…AND BY THE WAY THEY MEET IN AFC WILD CARD THIS WEEKEND.

Why does all the blogs come back to Vick bashing? or whole team bashing? I would think this should be a “pro” FALCONS venue! Trading Vick would definitely be a mistake, even if the salary cap issues weren’t there. Isn’t he the same QB that quarterbacked the team to 5-2 this year and 6-2 last year? before their slide? Saying he can’t get it done is irresponsible. Any OC/hc who designs 25-30 percent of runs for the qb is clueless. Especially one with the arm strength of Vick. He has demonstrated time and again that with time in the pocket he will make the Def pay. Say what you will but as a 40yr falcon fan I would rather not go back to blackout Sundays. Just hire a “mature” coach who will play the best players at their position regardless of their personal relationship. If Vick can’t get it done then bench him, but until he gets blocking up front and plays designed to maximize his strengths(not running)…deep outs, crossing patterns, buttonhooks then we may never know the true measure of this particular QB.

E you realy summed it up! There are a lot of ignorant racist football fans, Sports Writers, and Commentators. They never give the black QB the same chances they give white QB’s. These same people are always talking about stats, but don’t know the stats. I have been following Falcon Football for a long time and football in general. Let’s take a look at the previous Falcon QB’s and their performance. When white OB’s make a mistake it’s always the offensive line’s fault, the receiver’s fault, or the coaches. Black QB’s it’s their fault that the receiver’s are not catching the ball. Seems mighty strange to me that this same QB(Vick) can win games at he beginning of the season but not at he end? May be if he was Chris Chandler they would like him better. People let’s stop the ignorance and the hatred. By the way just because you can run doesn’t make you any less of a QB. It’s sad that some of you call yourselves student’s of the game. And most of you are men. Does Vick need to improve? Sure he has things he can improve on. But what QB doesn’t. A team needs all elements. A good coaching staff, a good QB, good running backs, receivers that can catch, an offensive line that can block, defensive backs that can cover, linebackers & safety’s that can hit. There are a lot of other high price men on this team that are not doing a good job. The QB and running back have set records and you people will not give them their due. I guess we will never stop the hatred.

1st, BirdDawg, Dennis, E, Dom, & WHAT LEADERS you made some good points. 2nd, Coach Killer, you have to realize that while publicaly Mora was giving Vick praise, privately he was also “throwing Vick under the bus” as you call it. Think about it, his dad Mora Sr. only spoke what little Jimmy was thinking. Plus, If I was Vick, I wouldn’t have tried to give him a vote of confidence either. Remember, Vick wasn’t the one who gave the Seattle radio interview saying that his “dream job” was UW and “he would leave for that job in a minute, even if they were in the middle of a playoff run” (which technically they were at the time.) To use your term, Mora threw the whole Falcons organization “under the bus.” Must anybody forget, only Blank wanted Mora, McKay wanted Lovie Smith or at least a coach with a “proven record of success” (Lovie did come from the Patriots you know). Only Blank canceled coach interviews after only two coaches. Only Blank was impressed by Mora’s charts, graphs, and other “smoke and mirrors.” There was a reason why Knapp and Mora where about to be fired from San Fran and Donatell was already fired. 3rd, My choice for head coach would be Jimmy Johnson. Does anybody remember over the last few weeks on the Fox show when JJ was asked would he come out of retirement to coach the Falcons, he has never said “no.” If anything, he has been extremely coy and calculated in his responses. Now a month or more ago, he used to say that he is enjoying his retirement. You heard it hear 1st folks, Jimmy Johnson will be the new coach. Remember, Blank for Jimmy “Comb-Over” Johnson like Jerry Jones for Bill “Big Tuna” Parcells isn’t afraid to pay what it takes to put a winning product on the field. Now for OC I wouldn’t mind seeing Mike Martz or Norm Chow. And for DC Mike Singletary could bring some of that “Monster’s of the Midway” nastiness to these pansies on defense especially the secondary that acts like it wants to play flag football. 4th, I have been a strong Vick supporter. I say let’s give him one more shot with a coach who will actually play to his strengths. Remember Bill Walsh even said that the whole reason he developed “The West Coast Offense” was to help hide the fact that his quarterback Joe Montana just didn’t have that strong an arm. (Check the NFL Films archives if you need proof.) He thought up the offensive scheme to play to his quaterbacks strengths of having “quick feet and a quick release.” That is the type of head coach we need. We need a coach who is not trying to force his offensive schemes on a qb that isn’t suited for it. He needs to develop a scheme that gives flexibility to his qb. No matter how against people are against Vick, you have to remember, he is at his best when he is allowed to improvise. (Not to mention a HUGE salary cap hit.) Besides, we need a coach(es) who isn’t (aren’t) afraid to change his (their) play calls when the game dictates their original schemes aren’t working. Remember, Vick wasn’t even on the field last week when Carolina only threw like 5-6 passes all game. Our DC still decided to stay with that lame a** zone scheme instead of stacking 8-9 men in the box. Fox played to Weinke strengths, which basically was he was good at handing off the ball and not trying to force plays. Plus it gets real frustrating how EXTREMELY PREDICTABLE our offense and defenses were. Look at the play calling all YEAR. It was 1st down…. run. 2nd down… run. 3rd down…. pass. 4th down… punt. How many times over Mora’s three years did we open up the game with a deep pass…. 3 times. He was so focused on establishing the run, that he would never alternate his game plan to keep other teams guessing. I’m sorry, injuries, ineffective play by W.R.’s and D.B.’s all go back to coaching. As for motivation in games, that still boils down to coaching. We need somebody that is not a “Player’s Coach” but almost (i did say almost) a “Player’s Enemy.” And we need somebody who is definitely “Old School.”
Finally, I just couldn’t let it go without a response. Queen D(!ck), Max, Fal”coon”fan, Vick Has Herpes and Jimbo Junyer (all from previous blogs), you guys are the exact kind of “fans” this team, this city, hell this earth needs. Calvin Johnson is not just any wide receiver, Blackfalcon. He is more than worthy of being taken in the first round. He makes Roddy White, Michael Jenkins, and Ashley Lelie COMBINED look like sht. And for the record…Jim Mora, Greg Knapp, and Ed Dontrelle sucked anyways. Not to take any of the blame off Vick, but shtty a* play calling doesn’t help the cause and doesn’t win football games, as you’ve seen the last two seasons now.

I wish we could talk football and keep the racism out of the blogs. Got to agree with BirdDawg, there is no way Atlanta can trade Vick. Huge salary cap implications. The choice for the next coach should be one that can develop Vick.
I hope someone will usurp the draft making decisions from McKay. He loves everything small - linebackers, OL,DL, runnung backs, private parts. The falcons need to go big in the draft. We have to draft a stout big defensive lineman. Trade Schaub for a 1st round pick. Draft an offensive lineman. No more wide receviers unless Calvin Johnson falls to #10. The team also needs to decide if Jimmy Williams can play corner back. He seems to be too slow and might be a draft buster at the corner position. The team also needs to draft a safety.
Our weakest link this year was our secondary and the safety position. They can hit but can’t cover my grand mum. Milloy did not have an INT the whole year. Cleveland traded Crocker for a reason. He’s too slow. Atlanta gave up the longest plays of 40 yds or more in the league and most of them were against big mouth Hall and Crocker Snail.
Need to sign Kerney before he hits the free agency. With the young linebackers that we have, Harwell or Brooking will probably be cut.

This is going to be a failure for Blank because he doesn’t have Bernie around telling him the “right” moves and decisions.
As for Vick going to the Raiders..I would love it but they have a similar one already…brooks who was a failure. BUT you never know with the Raiders and if we could get 2 first round picks (I know I am greedy..like Blank’s culture) we take Quinn and let him sit on the bench for a year and see what happens.
For head coach I would go with Chow. He has more experience than Wisenhunt.
Here is what I am most worried about is the Blank will raise ticket prices YET again for a sorry product…IF so I am heading to LOWES!!

I think vick will lead us to enough wins to make the playoffs next year. But beating the best of the best teams in the league is a different story! At some point we will be loosing a game in the 4th quarter, can vick lead us back to win is the question. 0-17 is his mark trailing in the 4th quarter the past 2 years, what do you think???? If we have to keep vick i say keep schuab as a backup and play schuab in any game were loosing in the second half of the game. (i hope the next coach has the balls to bench vick at times!) If i was GM id trade vick to the raiders for the top pick and maybe move down a couple of pics to grab Calvin Johnson. You pple keep saying first round recievers are a bust but CJ is bad!! You really cant even begin to compare the best reciever coming out of college in years to roddy or jenkins! Keep abraham, coleman, kerney, gandy, norwood, finneran and crumpler! I love ya Dunn but u might be a cap casulty, besides we need a big back for goalline situations.

Brady Quinn in the first round probably wouldn’t be a bad choice at this point, Bernie. I have to agree with you on that. I still think that Vick should be given another season under the new head coach to show what he really can do. I think he’s been holding back a bit. Give him a new set of WRs, a tough offensive line, and an offensive coordinator worth-a-s** that can make good decisions in the play calling department..and then Atlanta would definitely have a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

Vick is the best thing to happen to Falcon football because he flipped the fans off, has his owner wrapped around his finger and is vastly overpaid for his performance as a quarterback. He provides little to no leadership in the locker room and has shown a willingness to criticize those who dare question him.
Actually, Vick is a typical thing to happen to Falcon football. The question is whether you can get a coach who can get the rest of the team turned around, determined and fighting hard and then hope, by osmosis, that Vick will fight as hard and become as determined as he needs to be in order to be a good passing quarterback.
I vote for Mike Singletary. I think he could get the team and Vick turned around. Everyone would respect the guy and, to some extent, fear him. He’s a Hall of Famer who knows how to prepare. Lack of preparation killed this team the last two years. Mike Singletary is my choice. He ain’t Mora. He has credentials and respect as a man and as a player.

This entire racially motivated diatribe is simple disheartening, but feeding it on both ends of the spectrum perpetuates it.
Any Falcons fan that actually cares about the flavor of any player is simply not a fan. Logical arguments can be made regarding Michael Vick from both a positive and negative standpoint. However, I believe and hope that “E” is correct. However, he is also pointing out how many other aspects of the team require focus. Add the D to the list.
So, once again, who is the coach that will bring it all together?

I’ll go ahead and say this, first thing: I am NOT a Falcons fan.
With that being said, I will also say: Mike Vick is NOT good enough to be a quarterback in the NFL.
Arthur Blank isn’t interested in winning a Super Bowl, he’s interested in selling merchandise.
As long as seats and #7 jerseys continue to sell, the Falcons product will continue to LOSE.
Note: there are enough Negroes in metro Atlanta to ensure enough seats and #7 jerseys are sold, despite Mike Vick’s continual poor play.
If you don’t bow down at the cult of the “Black quarterback”, then I suggest you give up on Atlanta Falcon’s football, and let those that do take your place in the Dome on Sundays.

Vick had three games this season in which his passing was outstanding. Against the Bengals he threw three touchdown passes. Against the Cowboys and the Steelers he tossed four. That’s eleven touchdown passes in three games. He threw for nine touchdowns in the remaining thirteen games. Therein lies the conundrum that is Vick. Why can he sometimes rise to lofty heights and why, sometimes is he so awful? The Foulcons would be better served with a quarterback of a less mercurial nature. The Foulcons need a dependable quarterback who will give it everything he has everytime he steps onto the field. Mike Vick does not do that. He’s admitted as much and it’s time to change starters at the QB position. The Foulcons, more than likely, will lose Schaub unless they take action now. He’s plenty talented and he’s a hard worker. Time for a new beginning. Vick has quarterbacked seventeen losses over the past two years. He’s had his chance and he’s failed! To continue to do the same things the same way and expect a different outcome is the essence of insanity. End the insanity now. Dump Vick!

There’s no law forbidding him from selling merchandise, despite continual losing seasons. With enough marketing, he could sell ice to Eskimos. With enough marketing, he will continue to sell #7 merchandise.

Jonny, What planet do you live on? Manweez is right on pt. Add in the dropped TD’s and that raises his total to 26 / 13. Now back to Jonny, and anyone else who cares to differ. I simply ask, what should I call it. Under whatever disguise, it’s still racism. Okay, let’s eliminate that WORD. You just don’t like guys wearing braids steering your ship, just placing coal in the furnace. MV7, in my opinion, has shown the utmost restraint in NOT calling out the slackers he’s been saddled with. Everytime Allen Rossum was put in on defense, as a leader he should’ve walked up to Donatel and slapped the headset of his head. Everytime Hartwell got run over and Brooking made a tackle 8 yds downfield, he should’ve kicked Donatel in the balls. Everytime we lined up in that ridicules cover 2, he should’ve broken his legs. The coaching staff review the game film and failed to adjust, always. I would’ve went Ross Perot and held press conferences with film footage, charts and everything. Everytime we signed a midget lineman, I’d go T.O. on Knapp. Did anyone notice that Vick had his too best games with the two massive undrafted lineman starting? Every successful QB has receivers who go get the ball like it was Jenna Jameson calling out to him. We don’t have that. Try running for your life and being spot on 100% of the time. Doesn’t happen!!! How does a QB who runs a sub 4.4 40yd dash with lightening quick feet, get sacked 45 times. I love Peyton, but he hasn’t won anything. No QB will, they need help. I’ll put it to you this way and you can call it what you want. Wanting Schaub over Vick based on what we know about both, athletically and personally is either outright stupidity or dumb. I’ll call it racism. I’ll let you choose what category you place yourself in. By the way did I tell you that we’re only 115 days or less away from MATT SCHAUB trade day :)

You people are insane. Michael Vick is a unique talent the likes of which the league will NEVER see again. You people are so fickle, the wind blows and you change your opinion of people. Fans like you, not Michael Vick, Arthur Blank, or Rich Mckay, are the reason Atlanta will never be a REAL NFL City. Three years ago when Vick was hurt you were on hands and knees praying for his return. Now you want to replace him with a QB that couldn’t beat Philly’s Backups. Matt Schaub is winless as a starter. Yes, Schaub is a good QB. But he is not better than Vick. Oh yeah, and for all you racist commentators, I hear we just might be getting a minority head coach. Can you handle that or will your bigot heads explode? APPRECIATE THE TALENT WE HAVE!! THE FALCONS HAVE NEVER HAD A STAR LIKE VICK, AND HE HAS PUT THIS TEAM ON THE NFL MAP. SHOW SOME RESPECT!

Newsflash from Ms.Cleo Psychic!!!!It’s now 1 Jan 2008 LOSER FALCONS lose another 8 games and Vick laughs all the way to the bank with another 12 million dollars. Mike Vick says he learned the new offense and it’s not his fault but the officials and the NFL is against him running the ball all the time.. Same story just different day, and coach and Vick is still getting paid to lose. Don’t blame the coach blame the QB who sucks and has had 6 years to prove he can win in the NFL and seems to win 7 games. It’s not his O-line they are better than the 41million under the cap Titans and Vince Young wins. It’s the coach killcr Mike Vick. You must be as dumb as you sound. Football is a team sport and it involves a 52 man roster but it’s also about chemistry and leadership. Michael Vick can run there is no doubt when his feet hit the ground watch out. But a QB is he central figure on a team the leader kind of like the motor in a car. If the QB isn’t up to the job or unable to handle it the car won’t work either will the team. So he has been the most successful QB in Falcons history but is 7 games a season satisfaction? Playoffs, Superbowl championships that is why the game is played. One man can change a team look at Drew Brees, the saints were the bottom of the NFL for years. It’s the same team as last year minus Vick’s cousin A. Brooks. Drew Brees came in to NO and had already won in SD and was a QB who understands an NFL offense and defense. This year they are winning and swept the Falcon’s. Tom Brady took over for Drew Bledsoe they win, Vince Young takes a college team no one respect the Texas Longhorns and showe the universe it is sometimes a one man team. He had been doing his running and passing for three years at Texas and beat USC with his legs and arm. Michael Vick doesn’t have that fire in him anymore and it shows in his productions. Vince Young has a team that is 41 million under the cap with no talent and only won three games the year before and traded their franchise QB. Now the QB of the future has arrived he knows when to run and to pass and he has always played in a shotgun offense. No talent on his team and the Falcons are loaded with it. Maybe it is Vick he wants to be Mr. everything and not be a member with more than one star. Where is T.J. Duckett, Peerless Price? He isn’t the leader you need for this franchise and he needs to go unless 7 wins is what you want every year. Those are the facts and everything else you say doesn’t make sense you are defending Vick. 19 TD’s how many INT’s has he thrown for the year? Compare him to Vince Young, Drew Brees or anyone who has been in the NFL the same amount of time and Vick is behind the power curve.
Other teams have realized it’s time to start fresh, Steelers, Cowboys, Titans to name a few you the Falcons can’t let go of Vick and his I love you finger.
I enjoy seeing the Falcons sucks and know that Vick is the reason.
Why do you think that numbers are what makes you winners? If that was the case than Dan Marino would own more Lombardi Trophies than anyone. It’s not about numbers it about leading and making your team want to win and play. Look at the Saints last year the traveling team of the NFL. No one has wanted to play for the Aints since they were the doormats of the NFC. Drew Brees has inspired his team mates to win and to not worry about numbers but about performance on the field. They are 10-5 and swept the Falcons beating them on MNF too. A QB is the leader of a team and like an NCO in the military must provide leadership and the ability to motivate them to accomplish the mission which is winning games. No one is going to win every game but when they are inspired to win when the offense is pathetic like the TItans against Jacksonville that is leadership. Every organization will replace their leadership if they can’t do the job in the Army, or at a fortune 500 club. If a person is performing substandard and the mission is to win and they don’t than they need to be replaced. Michael Vick isn’t winning games and he won’t take reponsibility for his miscues or actions and lack of productivity and he disrespects the Falcon fans. Those who are loyal to him he gives you the “bird” the finger of appreciation and love. He makes money that he doesn’t deserve since he is played to win games lots of them not half or a few but to win championships and the Superbowl not Jersey’s or Madden games. His job is to win he isn’t doing that 500% isn’t winning it’s below average and that is a bust in the real world. The coach is too blame also for not benching him and trying other options Bill Parcells, Dennis Green, Mike Shanahan benched their starters to win. Some were successful and some weren’t the rookie QB’s haven’t been in the NFL 6 years. These are QB’s out of college and so they can’t win them all but when they win as many or more than a veteran QB who is suppose to be Superman the human highlight reel than we have a problem. Face it Michael Vick is a cancer and a problem that needs to go away. He shows his love for the fans with a F%@# you gesture and doesn’t win more than 7 games a season. 6 years and 47 wins and 52 losses I know one win away or loss from an NFC championship. He doesn’t produce the numbers he agreed or promised when he signed his FAT contract. SO don’t defend him show him the door and say Aloha.
These are the facts as of 25 Dec 2006.
The formula works if the Falcons take an early lead, but the team is 0-15 under Mora when Atlanta trails entering the fourth quarter.
Vick, meanwhile, has lost the edge he had from 2002-04, when he seemed capable of nearly taking over games at will. He finished 9-for-20 against Carolina for 109 yards, two interceptions and a 22.7 passer rating that’s the third worst of his career.
Entering Week 16, Vick had a fourth-quarter rating (59.4 percent) that ranked 34th in a 32-team league. His receivers were 31st in yards after the catch and 13th in drops.
Michael Vick the 60 million dollar bust and coach killer who can’t understand an NFL West Coast Offense or read an NFL defense.
When the rest of Atlanta Losers I mean Falcons. These are the facts face it. Get over it and get a new QB 6 years 60 million dollars later and no more than 8 wins. I know you are loyal to Vick but reality sucks and so does staying home another year. On his first carry, Vick rushed for 17 yards to become the first NFL quarterback to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. Andersen gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead with a 40-yard field goal in the first quarter that moved him past Gary Anderson for the all-time lead. Andersen now has 539 career field goals.
Vick had four carries for 32 yards and completed 9 of 20 passes for 109 yards with two interceptions.
That makes any team a winner two INT’s and 9 of 20. A great NFL QB the Falcons should win it all every year.
Brees, who came into the day with more than 4,000 yards passing and 25 TDs, finished 13-of-32 for 132 yards on a day his receivers dropped at least eight passes.
— If Vince Young keeps this up, the Tennessee Titans just might do the unthinkable and make the playoffs.
The rookie first-round draft pick has the Tennessee Titans (8-7), who started the season with five straight losses, alive in the AFC playoff race entering the final weekend after rallying them to a 30-29 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
The doubters have motivated Young all season long.
Young threw two touchdown passes and rushed for another to engineer his fourth comeback in the fourth quarter or overtime. This time, he helped Tennessee overcome a 29-20 deficit in the final 12 minutes. After hitting Brandon Jones for a 29-yard touchdown pass, Young engineered a 14-play, 75-yard drive, which Rob Bironas capped with a 30-yard field goal with 2:10 left.
Young’s most electrifying play came at the end of the first half, when he scored on a 36-yard keeper on a fourth-and-2.
Tennessee Passing C/ATT YDS TD INT Young 13/20 183 2 0
Tom Brady directed three long touchdown drives, capped one of them with a perfect touch pass to David Thomas, and helped the Patriots clinch their fourth consecutive AFC East crown with a 24-21 victory against the Jaguars on a rainy Sunday. Brady was brilliant in both games at Alltel Stadium.
He was 23-of-33 for 236 yards and two touchdowns in the Super Bowl victory against Philadelphia. He was even better against the Jaguars (8-7).
He finished 28-of-39 for 249 yards and a touchdown, completing passes to 10 receivers and picking apart the NFL’s second-ranked defense mostly with short and quick throws. He also ran 10 times for 31 yards, getting several first downs on sneaks and scrambling for yards to avoid sacks.
“He’s a great leader,” offensive tackle Matt Light said. “He went out there and did what he always does. Whenever we needed a big play he’s always out there making them.”
Atlanta Passing C/ATT YDS TD INT Vick 9/20 109 0 2 Vick had four carries for 32 yards and completed 9 of 20 passes for 109 yards with two interceptions.
Look at Vick’s numbers against other QB’s who win.
Vick Coach Killer and 60 million dollar bust.
The Falcons (7-8) suffered their fourth-straight home loss.
Vick doesn’t inspire his team to win when he blames them and doesn’t look at himself. Look at Arizona, Leinart he wins and he is a rookie, Tony Romo wins, Drew Brees inspired a city and he swept the Falcons. . It’s about dollars and earing what you are paid. Simple economics. How many people would live in a 60 million dollar house and the roof leaks 50% of the time, or drive a car that works 4 days out of the week. You wouldn’t keep an employee who worked or produced 50% of the time so why allow Vick. Leader he doesn’t inspire the Falcons to win Drew Brees does, Tom Brady, Tony Romo among others. Vick needs to realize he isn’t going to make it as an NFL Elite QB. Admit to himself that he needs to work harder and learn. IF Vick was so gifted why did Dan Reeves bring Steve Young to help him out after his first season? His numbers suck and he won’t win under a new system no one ever has. He didn’t win with Mora’s WEST COAST OFFENSE and it had to be simplified for him imagine brining in someone who’s playbook is complicated. Vick would be reading NFL Offense for dummies. AS for Drew Brees they didn’t want him in SD and he wasn’t a first round pick but now he schooled ATL this year on winning and looks worth every penny. Vick well he is laughing all the way to the bank and he doesn’t have the expectations of VY, Drew Brees or a winning QB to win game in order to get paid.
Vick didn’t do anything in college ball but left early and was hailed the new QB. They were wrong and Vince Young has proven them Vick doesn’t have the understanding of an NFL QB. Vick Coach Killer

the new coach must be someone who can conjure a way to harness the confounding genius of quarterback Michael Vick, a great athlete and an even greater enigma.
Vick may not be a coach killer, but it is notable that when he reports for his seventh NFL training camp in July, he’ll be working with a third different permanent head coach. It’s four coaches if you count the interim tenure of Wade Phillips in 2003. Such a turnover rate — alarming even in a league where owners change coaches the way they change underwear — isn’t solely Vick’s fault. But for a guy who has the ear of ownership and whom Blank has treated at times like a surrogate son, Vick hasn’t done a lot to help create the kind of long-term stability the Atlanta owner covets.
It will be interesting, given the tepid support Vick offered for Mora in the waning days of the coach’s stint here, to see how the coaching candidates the Falcons interview address that matter. So while candidates will line up for the opportunity to coach the Falcons, the number might be reduced by a few sage wannabes who will think twice about the potential for being the team’s next Vick-tim. No player is bigger than the team. But we can’t remember Blank’s pushing any other player around in a wheelchair the way he did the injured Vick before the 2003 opener at Texas Stadium.
To this point, Blank has been an enabler of sorts for Vick. It seems the best thing he can do now for his quarterback and franchise is identify a coach who can help Vick reach his potential. That’s not a small chore.
Vick is a guy whose unique talents force you to think outside the box. McKay on Monday termed him “a great player.” That’s a bit of hyperbole there because he is a great athlete who has yet to become a great player. He’s a player who might require adjustments in a lot of areas to justify the investment Blank has made in him.
Arguably the more critical of those adjustments might be with Vick’s psyche. Vick’s athletic arrogance of which Mora once spoke so glowingly has become as much a negative as an asset. In Vick’s mind, he has rarely lost a game. The scheme wasn’t right, someone dropped a pass (actually, that’s often the case) or something other than his own talents failed him.
Funny, but when Vick’s statistics were relatively pedestrian, his apologists trumpeted his win-loss record. Now that he’s just 15-16 as a starter the past two seasons, both of which ended with the Falcons’ missing the playoffs, Vick and his defenders have taken to stressing his statistics. Their favorites: Vick threw a career-high 20 touchdown passes in 2006 and became the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.
Want to examine those numbers closer? In his six NFL seasons, Vick has been healthy in four. In those four years, 47 quarterbacks threw 20 or more touchdown passes. It has become the equivalent of hitting 30 home runs, a much discussed but overblown stat. As for the 1,000 rushing yards, well, what did they net the Falcons, who aren’t in the playoffs? In the seven games this season in which Vick led Atlanta in rushing, the Falcons were 0-7.
Obviously, there must be a different way to get the most from the league’s most-hyped athlete. And it appears it will take a different kind of coach to do it.
Blank has demonstrated that he will spend whatever it takes to make his team competitive. The Falcons had the highest payroll in the NFL this season and second highest in league history. The team has had a top-five payroll in four of Blank’s five seasons of stewardship. As one of the NFL’s most conspicuous owners, Blank has demonstrated largess and patience. The former might not be wearing thin because Blank still has deep coffers, but the latter might be.
As a sportsman, Blank covets a Vince Lombardi Trophy, like all his NFL brethren. As a businessman, what he wants most is a new stadium, one with hundreds of luxury suites, guaranteed revenues and big profit margins. To win the hearts of the public in Atlanta and perhaps to secure funds for a new facility, the Falcons must be an annual playoff contender.
And the way to do that is to find a head coach who can handle the quarterback.

For you, Titothebear, the falcons problems seem to begin and end with Micheal Vick. His ineptitude seems downright cancerous for the Ol,WR’s,secondary and coaching.I will even add injuries because not citing them is more about attitude than reality. At times I have found your arguments thoughtful and compelling, but this one astonishes me in the opposite direction. Simplistic and reactionary are the best I can say about it.

I’m an Atlanta fan. Have been all my life from growing up there. It’s home. I liked old Coach Mora, but he could never get the most out of his players. That’s the bottom line in this league. I’m in the military and have lived all over. It sickens me that you “so called” fans jimped on the bandwagon at the beginning of the year. Even after the loss to the Saints, all the riders stayed on the wagon… Then it happened, we sprung a leak and everyone jumped off. It amazes me when I live in other cities how everyone SUPPORTS their team. If you hate the Falcons, hate the Falcons, shut up, don’t buy a ticket (then sell it to the opposition). The Falcons need an identity. I personally don’t think MV7 is a typical QB, but the guy has all the tools; I say develop him (wow, what a concept). MV7 isn’t a coach killer - MV& didn’t play defense when teams ran all over us. MV7 didn’t lead the league in dropped passes. Get over it. When teams play the Falcons, the first thing on their mind is how do we stop MV7. Where was the coaching to overcome that??? Peyton Manning puts up GREAT stats and can’t win, but I don’t hear you so called fans calling him out. The system makes the QB. Give any good player a great system and he will succeed. Vive versa, give a GREAT player a bad system and see what he accomplishes…. I will gladly die for your right to say what you want in these posts, but it’s tiring seeing the same old rants. Semper Fi… Go Falcons

I don’t quite understand the coach killer criticism. What other coaches has Micheal Vick killed? I thought that Dan Reeves departure was more about Blank than Vick. And Mora’s demise was largely based on…Mora(Sr. and Jr).Was there some college or high school coach that Vick professionally mutilated? Little league?

Mr. Blank’s quest is to find a coach who can make Vick into the superstar many think he should be. He is, in my opinion, misguided. The goal should be to turn the Falcons into a winning team and a proud franchise. Vick may not be the guy to do this as their quarterback. I don’t think he is! He has had ample opportunity and he’s still outrageously erratic and unpredictable. The team would be much better served by having a dependable quarterback that produces. Vick produces against the halt and the lame only. Of the teams the Falcons defeated this season I don’t believe any had winning records. The Saints chewed them twice and the Panthers beat them too. Cleveland and Detroit defeated them. it was time for Mora to go. It’s time for Vick to depart as well!

I can surely tell most of you are only fans and never atheletes in the past. Mike Vick is not the problem here. The “o” line is too damn small and the receivers have no confidence. If Vick was so bad, why the hell has Crumpler consistently made it to the pro bowl? He can’t throw the ball to himself. So that means that Vick can get it done. If the Falcons had respected receivers, “D” corordinators would not BLITZ Vick all of the time or stack 8 in the box for a Quarterback. You stack 8 for running backs. So what does that tell you idiots? Mike Vick is a bad a*!!!! With the right coach that is not soft on his players, the Falcons would be the most feared team in the NFL. Look how the league went crazy for the 2 weeks when they beat the Steelers and the Bengals. Vick can get it done. They should have been calling the same plays from them 2 games all season. Come on people (especially for you Madden players) if a play is working we keep running it. I bet you idiots play with Vick on Madden! Anyways the Falcons will bounce back and who ever is hating on Vick, will be back riding his nutz when he is doing his thing!

Also I am tired of people saying Vick should go. He does not play Defense people. I do not care if he threw for 4,000 yards and 30 tds. If the “D” is bad they will loose all of the games. Look at Detroit, Kitna threw for 4,000 plus yards and they are 3-13 now tell me how does that make Kitna a bad quarterback he is not on the Defensive side. Stop concering yourselves with the money he has or is going to have you can’t change that so let it be. He is a black man making more money than any player in the NFL. Like I said in my earlier post, Crumpler didn’t make the Pro Bowl by himself you knuckleheads. Imagine a better “O” Line and when Finnerman comes back and maybe a free agent receiver who can catch. They will be back next year. Unless they choose a soft coach who does’t instill some pride in that awful defense.

Does anybody know what is the cap hit that the Falcons will take for trading Vick? Seems like they have put themselves between a rock and a hard place. If they keep Mike or trade Mike, do they have enough salary cap space to sign the other talent they need?. Could it just be that the NFL is such competitive team sport that it is hard to build a championship team by spending so much on just one guy - any guy?
Seems like there is a lot of problems at Flowery Branch. I think that Vick would do much better behind a large offensive line of good pass protectors. Why is Rich McKay reupping the existing line to long deals? Does that make sense? Isn’t he making strategic coaching decisions with the implicit commitment to a cut-blocking scheme which doesn’t fit Mike’s talents?

When other players talked about accountability at “all levels of the organization”, were they talking about Michael Vick? Rich McKay? If I were trying to fix this organization, I’d really want to learn the motivation behind those comments.

We had a chance at Lovie Smith 3 years ago and blew it. Hopefully this time we’ll do it right. Chow, Singletary, Caldwell, or Grimm are my picks, but whoever the Falcons pick needs to come in and be a mature leader, not a hot head who won’t let linemen speak or blows up over questions from the press. We need a coach who can stand in the kitchen and not complain about the heat.

The only question Blank needs to ask himself is: Has this guy recently had resounding success in the NFL?
For Jim Mora, the answer was clearly no. His unit was 15th in the 32-team league the year before the Falcons hired him. He hadn’t help develop any perennial Pro Bowlers on his unit. Other than his youth and his infamous interview, he hadn’t done anything to set himself apart from the rest of the crowd.
Everyone thinks of the Falcons’ failures and blames it on Michael Vick, the offensive line, the wide receivers, the owner, the fans, the weather, the turf, herpes, Rich McKay, Ed Hartwell, and whatever else they can think of. The truth is, with better playcalling the Falcons would be solidly in the playoffs and would have contended for the division title. Forget about the personality issues, whether they will clash with Vick, etc. Get a coach who can scheme properly and calls plays intelligently and you will have a winner. On the few occasions when Knapp and Donatell called plays aggressively and intelligently, the Falcons executed well this year.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s an offensive coach or a defensive coach. Chow, Whisenhunt, Rivera, Cameron, Grimm — all of them have a pretty impressive track record and will all be good choices, if the Falcons decide to hire any of them.

It’s so obvious—Micheal Vick is killing the Falcons like a cancer, slowly at first and then with a sudden fury. I’ll give you 130 million reasons why Jerry Jones—-oops—-I mean Arthur Blank won’t give up on Vick despite all the obvious intelligent reasons. I can’t believe he gets a “free pass” for flipping off fans and Mora “hit the road” for his stupidity among other things. Yeah you—-Vick, your to blame as well for another sucky season, not your receivers, or an aging Brookings, injured Hartwell, or average Meangelo.
Vick’s 1000 yards running is a horrible stat, that only shows how inept he is as a passer. Don’t think so, look up Bobby Douglass’ and Randal Cunningham’s team wins versus losses the years the QB ran a lot. Vick was never that good at VT and hasn’t developed through two or three coordinators. He is short, doesn’t learn because he can’t be taught I guess, and an ego maniac who wants all the media when the opportunity arises. Why does Arthur put up with this despite all the talent in the world telling him Vick is a team Killer. I’ll tell you why. Arthur remembers his days on the school yard as a little boy who got beat up on a regular basis. Not now—-I’ve got a posse that includes Michael Vick!!. Fine it’s your money, if you want to throw it away, thats OK but don’t destroy my Falcons too.
One More Time—-Did anyone see how a rusty and rarely used Matt Schaub came in off the bench and jump started the offense? Receivers were making catches, linebackers were moving back and not towards the line. Yeah, he made some dumb throws that got intercepted, but wow—thats was fun to see the same players Vick has as weapons use their talents when the ball comes to the correct shoulder. Why can’t Vick do this?—Oh yeah—he is a glory hog, a one man show.
In conclusion—-Your probably a nice guy Mike off the field (or a thug I don’t care), you certainly want to win,——I just wish you were in Oakland working for AL Davis and not smelling up the Georgia Dome while I continuly and blindly spend the few bucks I have on a team that will never be better than average with you at the helm.

SC, other players talking about accountability? Please! Really, other than Norwood, Grady, Griffith and D. Williams and maybe Crumpler everyone else had sub-par multiple performances. Vick and Brooking gave good efforts most of the time but schemes were their undoing. The insane play-calling on both sides of the ball cost this team dearly. Special Teams wasn’t all that special this year either aside from the Cincy game. The QB takes a lot of the blame as they should but Vick was trying to execute a flawed gameplan 70% of the time. If the disdain for MV7 didn’t blind Bradley and other media types and beer belly middle aged Southerners so bad, they could see that he was being a team player trying to execute that crap. He wanted Mora to do something about it midseason, but he just couldn’t approach his buddies about their in ept gameplans. Thus at the end he realized Mora was loyal to Knapp to ne end. Admirable, but not a good trait for longevity in the NFL. Then this man lays it on the line, with his body trying like hell to make it happen and gets crapped on by middle aged men with big bellies in the media and on thier couch. These are not the real fans who attend the games at the Dome, these are the ones who listen to the pre-game BS on the networks and jealous former QB’s on TV. They see change coming and will strike it down as hard as they can. They will downplay the Troy Smiths and Chris Leaks of the world and hype the Quinn’s and Booty’s. Fortunately we have an owner and a GM that recognize this and aren’t swayed by this fraction among us. I appreciate Manning and Palmer as much as anyone, but dang its nice to see the Vick and Young’s of the NFL get their do too. They write off his 1000 yard acheivemnet as if its a freaking negative. This man did something that had never, “Never” been done in the history of football. And they question should he be the starter? Should he be traded? What else are we even minded football fans black or white to believe the motivation is anything but racism. He misses some throws, as do all QB’s. Hell, Knapp went into games with a quota on how many attempts the man would get, regardless of the stacked at the line defenses and game situations. Did Bradley, Schultz, Moore even congradulate Vick on his milestone? Crazy, and I know this bs will motivate Vick and all the real Falcon Fans to get pumped about a new Coach and a new system! Thank you Blank for not accepting less than average!

By the way, the first question Blank should answer, would the Raiders take Schaub and the Falcons 10th pick, heck throw in Jenkins and Roddy, for the No.1 pick and Randy Moss. Take Calvin with the No.1 and watch Vick and the Falcons become the greates show on turf. Chow or Martz Please. Ken W. is okay but not the body of work of the other two!

Anyone w/ common sense knows it was bad coaching. Against clevland, the falcons were on the browns 30. the ol hadn’t blocked decent for vick all day, the receivers dropped passes, vick did throw a few bad balls, but name one qb who doesn’t. bottom line the passing game sucked that day. What offensive coach in his right mind would order up on 4th and 1 a passing play strike to the end zone when you have the #1 rushing team in the league? THE SAME RACIST IDIOTS THAT WANT VICK GONE! When vick does good their necks get even redder. Nothing against Schaub but he hasn’t even won a game for them yet. If shockley were to come in the redneckers would have something to say about that too! They fear to have two black qbs #1 and #2 when schaub is traded. It’s just like on the job. To E you shouldn’t waste your time to talking to dumb redneck fools. All of them know deep down vick got 65% of his 1000yds either trying to make things happen or running for hsi life because he was given NO TIME to throw in pocket. That’s why when his close to 3000yd year under reeves was mentioned and the time he had in the pocket against cinnci, pitts and dallas when he proved to the world he could pass when he has decent protection these red red confederate redneckers get redneck quiet. They can’t help themselves. The racist blood and thoughts about vick seep out of their pores and mouths. Only God can change their racist hearts. When eli manning, carson palmer, jake delhomme, bulger or any other white qb is stuggling because of a bad day or OL or play calling they don’t utter a word because these players look like them. But when vick does something their necks get redder plus they HATE THAT A YOUNG BLACK MAN MAKING MORE THAN THEM AND THEIR QB GOD PAYTON MANNING. I CALL A SPADE A SPADE. I HATE TO GO THERE W/ RACE, BUT IF YOU READ THE PERSONAL ATTACKS ON VICK AND THE COMMENTS THESE DEMENTED FOLKS MAKE YOU KNOW FOR A FACT IT’S JUST PLAIN OLD RACISM. Having watched GaTech play in the New Year’s Gator Bowl game, it seemed to me there were some offensive parallels between GT and the Falcons. GT’s former QB, Reggie Bush, was a “running” QB, and somewhat grudgingly would pass to the outstanding receiver, Calvin Johnson. Michael Vick, seems to be a “running” QB… So, look what happens when GT puts in the backup “throwing” QB for the Gator Bowl… the 1st half of the Gator Bowl was a throwing spectacle for GT… Lesson learned… Falcons need to bench Vick and get a throwing QB…

Straight$$$$Homie: yea great points on vick man. no not really. u say schuab hasent proven anything, well i saw schuab in one quarter last week do more than ive seen out of vick the whole year in the 4th quarter!! Vick:0-17 when trailing after 3 quarters. If he wasnt the overhyper/overpaid great black hope at qb….then he would of got benched long ago! I can tell by the $ signs in your name your probably just like vick and thats why u defend him, as long as u get paid who cares what everyone else thinks right?? u got yours?? right?
Vick:a playoff qb…..yes. A superbowl qb….i wish…but no. O by the way most of you blak racists jumped on the falcons bandwagon just cause they got vick can suck a fat one and jump back off when we go back to a real qb. Im a true fan, since the old terrible chris miller days…..(even thou 91 was a good year). I dont care what color the man is, if he cant pass he cant pass!! I want us to draft CJ so bad…now thats a dude with class and heart that was brought up right! Vick should go join moss in oakland, and take all these fairweather fans who act like vick is God just because there the same race with em. Vick seriously lacks real natural leadership skills, u think farve would ever not support his coach like vick didnt support mora? A real leader would of said…this is partly my fault, we didnt do enough as a team. Did he say that? no he said “im good, i rushed for 1000 yards, i wanna get 2000 next year, i can learn a new playbook” We need a coach who isnt afraid to sit his a* on the bench from time to time to make him work harder to get better!

Happy New Year to most of you…
Look, I have been saying this since the writing on the wall became clear, Norman Chow will not coach the Atlanta Falcons… If you people hated Dan Henning, you’ll certainly hate him. There are just better situations out there for him… I also think he will lead a team to Super Bowl if he gets a honest chance… Atlanta is not a honest chance for any head coach. People blamed Gibbs and Mora for our O-Line, that mess is Dan Reeves fault… Old Salty did his best filling the gaps for 2 years, this year the dike broke completely and it became Post Katrina in Flowery Branch…
Schemes: I have no problem with cut blocking or zone blocking but you better have some quick feet to get it done… Now who in their right mind thinks the Falcons have that? Wayne Gandy abd Tood Weiner simply are not capable of that, and we’ve tied cap money to those two… For all of you decrying Vick, those type of players are your real cap killers… Rich McKay played around all summer beforee finally getting Grady Jackson signed, don’t you realize that last 5 drafts has not produced one STARTER on our O or D-line? Most have gone on the practice squad or under produced as backups… We’ve done a better job in picking up other teams castoffs: Alexander, Clabo, Carrington, and Chris Cash the DB than in the draft… I hoped when Blank said he was looking top to bottom that he meant just that, I fear not…
You all keep talking about the usual suspects, Blank needs to stop reading Steve Wyche’s column and really look for someone who can COACH… Mike Martz can not coach, he had the greatest offense talent in the league in St. Louis and imploded that team!!! John Kitna threw for 4000 yds this year, but would you really want that smelly offense here? Mike Singletary? Are you kidding me, if he gets an interview than Deion needs to get one. The 49ers can’t stop a cold, and that is with the Ravens old D coordinator as head coach! I’ve said it all along, Chow won’t come here, Whisenhunt will need a different type of linemen… There are two different choices for this job that can bring this team to the big show: Ray Sherman or Tim Lewis… I can guarantee that McKay will not interview either of them…

To all the so called “fans” who wouldn’t come to the games or even pull for the Falcons if Mike Vick was traded do the rest of us a favor and stop posting. In fact, stop going to games and go ahead and move to another city. We need more people who support the Falcons because they love the team and not because they support its over-hyped and over-paid QB. Vick is 6-13-1 against winning teams prior to the start of this season. Since we didn’t beat any winning teams this season that record is now even worse. The guy doesn’t beat good teams, which by the way, the playoffs will be full of. Vick has the second lowest pass completion percentage in the NFL ahead of only Vince Young (a rookie). Vick alone was responsible for over 60% of our turnovers this year. And despite all the rushing yards he only rushed for 2 touchdowns. Comparing him to other quarterbacks who have similar salaries (which there really aren’t any) he doesn’t contribute near the amount of total yards as his peers. His production is certainly far short of his 130 million dollar contract. And for all those bashing Schaub, the guys got to play in like 6 games his entire career, hardly enough to judge how good he can potentially be. I think its safe to say, however, that given the 6 years Vick has had, Schaub would be much farther along by now. Face facts folks, Vick will never win a championship and is just not a quarterback.

Ron Mexico is a coach killer.
You fans in Atlanta have to find a way to work this salary cap issue out with a trade and finally get rid of Ron Mexico to another organization who can pamper this kid and watch him flutter around the field never leading his team. I like Ron, he seems like a nice kid and yes has done much for the community (non-white of course, but that is an observation few would mention). Ron is just not smart enough to play QB. Dan Reeves had to connect the dots and rewrite his playbook so Ron could understand how the game is played. Ron always seems lost or in a cloud on the sidelines as Knapp tried to tuitor him. Does he have ADD? Or maybe he needs to stay away from his brother and clean out his system.
Others laugh at Atlanta fans who think this guy is superman. I hope he stays in Atlanta so the falcons never are a threat to win anything. What coach in his right mind wants to come into this mess and be forced feed with a QB who is a good runner, avg passer and has a thug attitude?

Where to begin… First, I would trade Vick. Get some O and D lineman and a running back to compliment Dunn. Vick is a one-dimensional QB, gifted physically as he is. His only pass is 100 mph andhe has no “touch” when the situation calls for it. His ability to scramble can be adjusted to, as has been amply shown thepast couple seasons. Blank neds to admit he screwed up and get a QB, whomever, who can read defenses, check off downfield and go to the 2d, 3d and 4th receiver is required as well as float the ball just over the hands of the DB is needed. Racially motivated? I’d tradeVick for Vince Young in a heartbeat. Young has a great touch and feel for the ball and will outshine Vick if not next year, surely within 2 or 3. As for coaches, I really liked Dennis’ suggestion of hiring Chow ad head coach, and Mike “Samurai” Singeltary as assistant head coach and defensive coach. Singeltary would have tremendous impact on a defense that is very capable but very suspect, and Chow had proven he can develop a QB. I just wouldn’t saddle him with Vick, he obvioulsy belives he is God’s gift to the game despite his stats. Now that Mora’s gone and in a couple years when Vick still hasn’t developed into a champion QB, who will he point the finger at then? One man does not a team make. I mean face it, Montana was no where near as gifted athletically as Vick is, but who would you rather have in the playoffs and the SuperBowl? You’d still go with Vick? Look past the hype at the man and the position. Blank, shop Vick, get some muscle on the line, and get Chow and Singletary.

wow, you people including Bradley want to put the Falcons downfall all on Mike Vick. Let me remind you that before Vick came to the ATL the dome was always empty and the games were blacked out on telvision. Most of you did not even care if the Falcons won or lost and had no interest in the team. Now everyone wants to pile on Vick.
Go ahead trade Vick, bring in a “TRADIONAL QB” and lets see how many Dome seats are sold. Lets see if the games are on FOX on Sundays. Bring in Brady Quinn or whoever, better yet, let Schaub play.
The team that gets Vick will be happy with him and they will win just like the Packers did with Farve.

I can’t believe what I am reading on here. We didnt win so lets blame Vick. Where are the real Falcon Fans.
Mike Vick is not the problem in Atlanta. You got some people on here even talking about getting rid of good players. Like Warrick Dunn, Mike Vick, Alge Crumpler. Get Real. 1st off they or the focus of the offense and they or as good as any body in the league maybe better.
Mora may not have been the main reason we didnt win but he didnt make any changes in the play calling and lets see. Let me give you people a real break down.
Lets get some receivers Mike Vick Throws as good as anyone in this league. He can throw and catch the ball people. Mike Vick has played his heart out for Atlanta. and he has made it to where every teams wants a qb like him but we got the best Randy Moss said it best. How do you expect Mike Vick to be a great passer when you dont have great receivers to catch his passes.
Look at a lot of the games if the receivers would have made 1/4 of the passes we would be in the playoffs.
And to say Matt Schaub is better LOL.
Mora and Blanks should have traded him when we got Shockley for some picks last year when his stock was high is not as good as you people think and is not better than Shockley so if you getting rid of Vick we dont need anyone but Shock to come in.
offensive coordinators were the problem for the offense. Look at the play calling over.
Look at the Defense once you get passed the linebackers. We got guys who talk and get burned act like High school players. Yes the line needs a little work but Kerny and Abraham were hurt.
Get some DB’s We may need better Scouts for the team Cause there or some great players at smaller schools
And Real Fans lets stop name calling if Vick wins hes the greatest but it takes 22 players to won.
And Mr Blanks Please dont get a recycled coach if you were a loser somewhere else what makes people think you going to win with a new team. Get some fresh Minds and Ideas you got a good core of players work on it.
Falcons for life maybe we will get there in 2007 Happy New Year

All of those people who keep calling for the Falcons to trade Vick are just proving how stupid they are.
Get this straight - The Falcons CANNOT trade Vick. Is that clear enough for you? With the salary cap restrictions and the way his contract is written - the Falcons can’t trade him. They would be in Salary Cap Hell for several years and couldn’t get any decent players to sign.
Again - because of the Salary Cap restrictions, the Falcons CANNOT trade Vick without destroying themselves for years.

I love the idea of looking at hiring Chow and Singletary as coaches. We are stuck with Vick anyway it goes. I think we should get what we can with trading Schaub. Otherwise we get nothing next year. I beleave we can get alot for him because he will turn into a star in this league. Now my biggest concern is Chow getting by the intreview with Mckay. He may not like having a guy who has much more football experence as him in play. You see if Chow gets hired and he starts evaluating the talent that has come here the past few years and he lets Blank know. Whooo it might make Richie look pretty bad after all. Mckay wants a yes man for a coach and that is why I think Reeves was let gone. Just one mans thoughts.

We are hiring a head coach. Not a quarterback coach. Under current reasoning, head coach not even suppose to call plays. Jobs are quite different. And require quite different skills.
Sean Payton looks great at New Orleans. If he takes them to NFC playoffs, he will have done as good as Mora in first year. One year does not a great coach make.

Vick needs to step up and be a man and a leader. His actions or lack thereof effects the whole team. He has never been a leader and no matter who coaches him, the falcons will never accomplish anymore than what they have the last three years.
The whole offense needs to be traded and only keep the center, and running backs, te. Getting rid of the coach was not the answer and I think Mora wanted out because Mora was not allowed the make the QB change that is needed. Schab will be a starter next year for some team and will lead them to the playoffs. That’s right, I said leader.

To “Haters”, Actually I’m a season ticket holder and live in Atlanta. Next time before making your ignorant assumptions and then typing your racists post, try reading what I said and actually disputing some of the facts and opinions I presented. You may have noticed I presented actual data to back up my statements. I’ll respect anyone’s opinion who provides some basis behind it, but until you learn to do such, like I said in my post, stop posting.

BirdDawg…Stop throwing Forsyth Co. under the bus. There are many good people that live here, including me.
It doesn’t matter who the next coach is…he will be fired as well in 3-4 years b/c of Mike Vick.
The Falcons need a Ravens like defense if they are to ever win a Superbowl with a QB who is erratic as Mike Vick has been so far. Other than that, they don’t even have a chance.
The Falcons need to give Vick one more year, and then trade him…the hit on the salary cap will be a lot less after next season. They also need to blow up this zone blocking/cut crap and get a real running game. This could be a while, if we just say “they need this, or that”, b/c they need to change so much to be competitive. Get a real running back, Dunn is too small to get the short yardage runs, he gets stuffed every time on 3 and 1!
Somehow, someway, the Falcons need to get A. Peterson out of Oklahoma in the draft, or when McFadden from Arkansas comes out in a year or two, draft that guy. Just someone who is a big, physical RB with breakaway speed.

Lets have a race war. That sounds fun. We can put all the redneck sister loving racist who can’t stand the thought of a black quarterback on one side. On the other we will put all the fatherless ebonics spraking jobless blacknecks. The only stipulation is that Vick has to be on the white side and Brooking has to be on the black side. Everyone will fight to the death in a Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome situaition. Michael Richards and Cynthia Mckinney ( My two idols) will referee. Have a nice day idiots

The Falcons don’t have the wrong QB with Vick, but they do have the wrong offense. Instead of the pro-style, they ought to use the old single-wing offense since Vick is such a good runner. Get him on the outside and watch him run or pass, but as long as he stays in the pocket, he’s doomed to more failure.

I guess philly’s 3rd string qb should start here he threw for 300 yards on us. Vick is the man so live with it. I am sorry he is not 6’5 with blue eyes.

Hey “haters” you should travel out of the SE once in your life so you can look at the world in non-filtered glasses. I would guess that the Broncos organization has had back to back winning seasons more than once so you and king arthur may want to look at Denver, Philly, SF, Dallas, Pittsburg, etc and see what a blueprint for back to back winning seasons are.
If Atlanta is stuck with Ron Mexico than that is a mistake arthur has put this organization into…so how to move forward with that mistake?? How do you make this rich spoiled kid grow up into a man who will drop the attitude and thug image, will act as a leader and inspire ALL on the team, play Team ball, work overtime on his passing skills, hold on to the ball with both hands when he runs, and be a good role model to ALL fans and races.
Maybe with the right role model Ron will grow up and be that man we all want him to be… This is the movie “Any Given Sunday” in real life… it is up to Ron to put away the superman attitude and be a real man and lead by example. Only time will tell…..

Although I readily admit that Vick needs to be a leader on this team, Mora should have been more of a leader and kicked Knapp/Vick, Donnatel/Brooking/Kerney in the a* when they needed it. This would have translated to these guys leading on the field and the Falcons would have been better for it. But this team failed in all phases of the game. Offense, defense and special teams have all lead to a 7-9 finish. This all happened under Mora’s watch and it ultimately cost him his job. The next coach, whoever he is, will have to hold his players and coaches accountable for bad play or bad coaching decisions. There was no accountability whatsoever with this team the last two years. Blank is the most to blame for coddling players and undermining the authority of his coaching staff. He needs a coach that will bring toughness and accountability to this team. He also needs to let the coach run this team as he sees fit. I don’t really care who he hires, but he needs someone to whip these guys into shape and make football players out of them.

Ihave said it for the last three years, Jim Mora has no BALLS. He lacks the strength to push players and make them realize that they are getting paid to play and win. His favorite statement was: “I tell the guys to go out and have fun.” The heck with that! you go out and WIN! Vick is not the problem. Mike Vick is a part of the solution. If our receivers would catch, our defensive secondary would get some pass rushes, sacks and our play calling was better, our record would reflect it. Play calling is another thing. We have the worst play calling ever. You have fullbacks, use them. Let those big backs pound those 1-2-3 yards straight ahead for the first downs. It all starts with the head coach to make those decisions. I just hope that we can get an aged head coach who knows what it takes and how to win. Mora is no loss, but another step in the right direction.

Mark,
Great analysis - I lean towards the side which believes Vick has been playing in an offense which does not fit his skills - 6 ft QB require a deeper launch point and a general rule.
It looks to me that our first round receivers not only drop too many ball don’t get open very often.
Vick needs to develope a better touch, he does deliver a ball which is hard to catch. When Jaworski came into the league he like Michael had great arm strength, but Sid Gilman taught him how to take steam off the ball making his short and medium range passes easier to catch.
I think our talent level has been over sold to the public - our “Big Men” don’t look dominating to me on either side of the ball. Kearney and Abraham would have made our pass rush more intimidating and our corners would have been much more effective. However, I am not sure they would have made our run defense Championship caliber. Had they not have been injured, we would have won enough games to save Jim’s job. They would clearly lowered the passing rating of our division QBs.
I personally believe skilled free agents sell tickets, but “Big Men” can help you win against championship level talent. Garcia could have never taken the Eagles to the play off behind our offensive line. Back up skilled guys can perform at level which will allow you to beat other good teams if your “Big Guys” can dominate.
Every question you asked needs to be answered, I lean towards the side that Michael is good enough, but none of us know for sure.
Arthur and it advisors should in my opinion should watch film of the 2006 Falcons with each candidate that the interview - they will benfit from listening to five smart football coaches telling them what they see.
They will see their football team with a much broader prospective if they can get five expert opinions.
I am one who believes we have the right ownership - he may make one more mistake before his has a the right coach and were I am a McKay supporter, I have seen good personal guys make mistakes, learn from your errors and move on - * never ever get beat the same way twice!!!*

The Falcons were in everygame except for the one against the 2007 Superbowl Champions. During the first two games when everyone was healthy the Falcons were unstopable. The the faced a team that is realy together. The NFL is the toughest sports league on the planet; with teams so evenly matched you half to gamble to win. Micheal Vick is a wildcard, and we are going to need him and all the Falcons to win the Superbowl next year

Gang, please don’t go into this chicken little mindset. This team just needs to do the following things:
Get some real talent on the trenches (on the offensive line - two legit guards and a center, on the defensive line, two real defensive ends)
Change the team makeup from a finisse team into a power football team
Get a power back (sorry W. Dunn and Norwood)
Draft a coverage safety
Get a coach who has proven in the past how to develop players, put players in the position to win, and kick their butts (cut them regardless of who they are) when they get out of line.

Race, race, race. To some, if you want Vick gone, it’s because you’re a redneck, racist Klansman who sleeps with his sister. Those who express these views are tue racists. Black or white, the NFL is made up of extremely big, fast and talented players and brilliant coaches. Vick’s scrambling, schoolyard theatrics won’t work in the NFL. The teams are simply too good to allow it. The watch film, they adjust. Vick has an arm, sure. He can throw the ball a long way. But he has no touch on the ball, he throws on the run instead of stepping back and following through, and he zips it 70 miles-per-hour, sidearm, at his receivers knees - often at the back of their kness. Then he blames them for not catching the ball. No wonder his teammates give up on him. Black or white, he is not a team leader. Leaders are humble, and they lead by example. Mark McGuire was not a team leader. He was selfish. Oh yeah, he’s white. Jeremy Shockey is not a team leader. You guessed it - he’s white. Walter Payton was a team leader. He was black. Tony Gwinn was a team leader. Black. Vick dresses, talks and acts like a street punk. That alienates people. He praises himself. He blames others. The Falcons need a true NFL quarterback who is a leader. Black or white, I don’t care. Oh, by the way - I’m black.

The receivers can catch. They have proven that on other teams or in college - they would not be where they are today if not. Vick is the fly in the ointment. I’m not saying that Mora should still have a job but no matter what coach you get Vick will only take us so far. Sure, we’ll make the playoffs, but our stay will be short-lived. There’s only so much you can do in the pros with a college QB who does not advance. He’s 6 years in with very little sign of progress.
PREDICTION: January 1, 2009 (Atlanta) - Coach was let go by the Atlanta Falcons today after consecutive 6-10 seasons. Michael Vick continues to set records running the ball but his QB efficiency rating is near the bottom of the league, below many rookies. ETC…..

Once upon a time in the “MidWest” there was a team with a 1-10-1 record who fired their coach for cause. They hired an unknown assistant coach who took the ‘rag-tag’ group of players, which included a 3-dimensional college Quarterback(not unlike Mike Vick) at Halfback, to what many believe was the greatest football team of all time. Vince Lombardi took the “lowly” Green Bay Packers with Paul Hornung at Halfback and Bart Starr, a traditional drop-back passer at Quarterback to “Hall of Fame” greatness. I said this to say; there is no need to get rid of Mike Vick. Use him to best advantage; as a halfback with the added threat of his passing ability. Paul Hornung went to the “Hall of Fame” being used just this way.
Oh, by the way; what has color got to do with anything?

I guess it’s Vick fault our OLine can’t block a 2 year old girl, Allen Rossum,Jason Webster, and Jimmy Williams can’t cover a 2 year old girl. What about the fact that Jenkins and White catch like a 2 year old? Vick has his faults and needs to improve, but you can’t but all of the Falcons troubles on him. You guys are so fickle, had you all hadn’t been so quick to turn on Dan Reeves, we may not be in this situation. At least he had Vick on the right track.

Michael Vick is an average QB who doesn’t read defenses all that well and is an erratic passer. He is also a great athlete who makes plays with his legs. I want you all to ask yourselves one question and be honest. If Michael Vick could not run would he be a starting QB in the NFL? I think we all know the answer to that question. Donovan McNabb for years played with the worst receiving corps in football. But yet he was still a successful QB. Now the Falcons problems are not all Michael Vick fault. There are certainly problems with other aspects of the offense, but you Vick supporters have to acknowledge that Vick although he is a great athlete is not the elite QB he is being paid to be. The QB position is the most scrutinized position on the team. Criticism comes with play the position. Vick supporters need to stop giving him a pass on every aspect of his game and off the field issue.

Since this blog (and every other blog about the Falcons) is all about Vick, here’s my two cents worth. Love him or hate him, MICHAEL VICK IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE, HE WILL NOT BE TRADED, HE WILL NOT BE A RUNNING BACK OR WIDE RECEIVER OR DEFENSIVE END. He will be THE quarterback as long as Arthur Blank owns the Falcons. Too much time and money invested to do anything else. So, Falcons fans must accept the fact that Vick is the QB, like it or not, and move on. Whichever coaching candidate is picked, he must accept that also and plan accordingly. Otherwise, don’t waste your time coming here.

For all of you wishing that the racism on these blogs will stop, you’re wasting your time. This is Atlanta (the deeeeeep south) and we have a black QB. That is a recipe for racists rants. The fact is that most of these amoeba want to judge Vick based on his race and not his performance as the falcon QB. They want to insult his family, his life style, the way that he dress, talk…. everything except his performance as a QB. When they are called out as the virulent racists that they OBVIOUSLY are, they become defensive. Don’t pizz on my head and then try to convince me that it’s raining. Your attempts at stealth are disingenuous at best.
Mike Vick is the most exciting thing to happen to ATL sports in many, many years. Is he a god devoid of shortcomings or mistakes? No! No one is. Though some of these bloggers would have you believe that THEY are. He’s being held to an impossible standard in many corners. Standards that no human being could live up to. He’s being blamed for the shortcomings of 52 other players. Who, by the way, also make millions of dollars to do their jobs…WELL. Vick could win the Superbowl every year and there would still be criticism and YES for many, it’s because he’s black. I’m not here looking for validation, agreement nor to have my ego stroked as many of these bloggers are, but if you are a redneck racist, I’M GOING TO CALL YOU OUT ON IT!!! I could care less what any of you think of me. This is cyberspace where the rules of engagement are decidedly different than in other media. Vick is the QB for the Falcons. He will be for the foreseeable future and those who don’t like it NOR HIM should simply change their allegiance and cheer for another team. It’s not quantum physics. It’s REAL simple folks. YOU have that choice! To called the man a thug, dumb, disease riddled, insult his family and all that other foolishness is pure and simple RACISM!!!! No matter how you couch it.
With a new HC, OC and DC along with improvements in the O-Line and Secondary, the Falcons will be a much improved team. GO VICK! GO FALCONS!

Well said, Kevin. Criticism comes with the position, regardless of race! Chandler got brutalzied in the media while he was here for being a statue in the pocket — never mind he had no line.
Vick is our QB for the near future, and as long as he is making that kind of cash to do so, he will be held to a high standard. His statitics are color blind, and they are what they are — BAD. Until they improve, he WILL get criticized, as he should. Team leaders who make the big bucks have to live with that. Chipper Jones does when he can’t stay on the field, and Vick is no different. He doesn’t get a pass because of skin color.

Hey Wings of Victory, please don’t use ridiculously pretensious phrases like “Your attempts at stealth are disengenuous at best,” and then turn arounsd and say “I could care less” when you mean to say “I couldn’t care less.” Your attempts at intelligence are a sham at best. And your logic is flawed as well. If someone were to say that Mike Vick looks or acts or smells like a monkey, then that person may be a racist. But someone who questions the man’s character is not necessarily a racist. I’m black, and I question Mike Vick’s character. What does that make me - an Uncle Tom? Please stop embarrassing yourself by posting such race-baiting rants that only demonstrate your obvious insecurity of being black.

Some of you geniuses need to help me understand something. If Mike Vick is “the problem” now, why was he not “the problem” in 2002 and 2004 when the Falcons went to the playoffs and won playoff games? I guess you are going to tell me that the coaching was far superior in those two years (I might buy that for 2002), or that the other Falcons players were so good that they overcame Vick’s shortcomings those two years, huh? I will have no problem with the new head coach trading Vick and playing Schaub if he chooses to do that (and Blank allows him to do that), so do not think that I am blind to Vick’s faults as a QB. My point is that Vick is OBVIOUSLY not the ONLY PROBLEM on the Falcons roster, and removing him from the team WILL NOT solve all of the problems and get them to the Super Bowl.

Barney Strickland, the MAJORITY of NFL players are NOT “academic all americans.” They are the exception rather than the norm. While a college education is important, it does not guarantee success in professional sports. Using your logic, which is replete with flaws, juniors who opt for the NFL would all be failures. I seriously doubt if you took one single class with Vick. Your comments are probably more to support your perception of the man being “dumb.” Insulting him alone does not suffice you. You have to add his brother in to the mix. His brother has NOTHING to do with Falcon football. W Bush, an admitted C- student at Yale, is now the President of the United States. How is that so?
Charles , no one is giving Vick a “pass’ because of skin color. In fact, I see it as being the opposite. IT’S THE REASON WHY SOME JUDGE HIM MORE HARSHLY.
Most of you can’t come even remotely close to Being a QB in the NFL, but yet, you have ALL the answers in regards to Mike Vick. Astonishing! “Couch Coaches” who probably don’t even know what a jock strap is let alone wear one. GET OVER YOURSELVES!!!

Robert Lynn: you said: “Led the league in rushing which should lead to a high percentage of 3rd down conversions. Conclusion, need a QB.”
Nope, you are not correct superficial one. Their rushing totals are deceptive. Take’s Vick’s rushing yards out, and it was merely a decent rushing attack. Take out the threat of Vick running, and the rushing attack was even less good. (Less yards would have been gained if defenses were not also worried about concerning themselves with vick.) The problem with short yardage, red zone, third down, fourth down, and fourth quarters is that we do not have a true running attack. I love Dunn but he is absolutely useless to this team in third down, fourth down, short yardage and the red zone. Why do you think TJ Duckett was always put in there in those situations in the past? The absence of a big back crippled this team on third down, fourth down, short yardage, and the red zone.
Dig a little deeper, robert lynn. Actually, a lot deeper.
Vick is far from perfect. Not a good passer. Not a leader at all. But those short yardage, red zone, third down, and fourth down problems were more caused by Dunn and Norwood who are too tiny and can not push piles and fight for those needed yards. It breaks my heart to say that about Dunn because he is a good man, a good teammate, a loyal soldier. But he is too tiny. That is why when the Birds signed him, they said he was not going to be the featured back. They were going to give him “touches”. I think they said they were going to find a way to get him 10 rushes and five pass receptions a game.
Although he has been productive, he has somehow ended up being miscast as the featured back. McKay should have known better. There was a big reason why he had to combine Alstott for all of those years with Dunn when they were all with the Bucs.
Actually, when they were with the Bucs, didn’t Rich McKay let Dunn leave as a free agent to go to the Falcons because McKay believed Dunn was not worth the $$$$ Blank was paying because Dunn was not enough of a featured back to justify the $$$$$ Blank was paying Dunn? BTW Dan Reeves did agree with McKay back then. he did not want Dunn either. he was actually angry with Arthur for being impulsive and signing Dunn. That is why Reeves went out and drafted Duckett two months later. That of course angered Blank who thought he just signed a featured running back in Dunn.
Reeves knew he needed a power back and not a finesse back. Blank wanted to draft Lelie instead of Duckett. Of course, 4 years later, what happened? Blank avenged that draft day dispute he had with Reeves. He essentially traded Duckett for Lelie in order to avenge that draft day dispute with Reeves from all those years ago. Pathetic. But it also highlights how much Blank is too involved with football decisions when he needs to stay away. It also shows that McKay is little more than a puppet for Blank.
If four years ago, McKay did not resign Dunn for the Bucs because he did not think Dunn was enough of a featured back to sign to the amount of $$$$ Blank was paying Dunn, then why would McKay then four years later trade away Duckett and leave Dunn alone to be the featured back when McKay clearly does not think Dunn is a featured back. Hell, McKay drafted the guy ten years ago. he knows his abilities better than anyone. four years ago, he clearly made a decision that Dunn was not good enough and not worth his contract.
It is clear then where the blood lies: Mr. Blank. I hope he realizes that REeves was right and that you need a big back to be the featured back and that he should not have let his little man crush on Lelie and his grudge match with Reeves get in the way for what was best for the team. Duckett scored about eight touchdowns a year and also converted many more third downs and fourth downs, thereby keeping drives alive, thereby increasing the chances for his team to score even if he was not the one who ultimately scored the Touchdown, and thereby keeping his defense off the field by making sure that drives were sustained with third down and fourth down conversions.
McKay clearly agreed with Reeves and thought the team was better off with Alstott than Dunn. he was right. The year after Dunn left, the Bucs won the Super Bowl. Imagine that.

January 3, 2007 11:46 AM | Link to this
LET’S LOOK AT THE UNDISPUTED FACTS: 1. Arthur Blank - Could not ask for a classier and better Owner/Leader. Atlanta thanks its lucky stars he is the owner!
Now - Vick has not demonstrated the passing talent of any of those legends of football. Vick is a star running back playing QB. My point is that Vicvk has the fan attraction - people want to see what he will do next. People want to see Vick run 150 yards a game. Problem is, People also want to see 2 to 3 touchdown passes also and Vick is simply not capable.
Vick will not be traded UNLESS he has one to two more BAD seasons like the present one. Vick would probably get a FREE PASS next year because of the coaching change and new scheme he has to learn (and he has not shown himself to be a fast learner of new schemes).
If you trade Vick in this racially divisive city of Atlanta, and choose the white back-up, albeitly qualified Shaub, Blank knows many season ticket holders would rebel and cancel and his attendance would go down. And it would become a political hot potatoe that Blank would not want to address or face. Since this is a business Blank would not place himself in such an untenable situation. The writer above pegged it. Blank is married to Vick as long as Vick is healthy and does not embarass himself or Blank in Public.

The Foulcons have made one Super Bowl appearance and that was before Vick came into the league. In forty-one years of existence, six with Vick on the team, the Foulcons have never enjoyed two consecutive winning seasons. It’s time to install a real coach and a real quarterback. In six years Vick has done nothing! He’s set a personal mark, one thousand yards rushing, but that didn’t take the team to the playoffs. Vick may be amusing to watch but it’s victories that lead to Super Bowls and Vick has produced very few of those!

In six years Vick has done nothing! He’s set a personal mark, one thousand yards rushing, but that didn’t take the team to the playoffs. Vick may be amusing to watch but it’s victories that lead to Super Bowls and Vick has produced very few of those!

One good coach? Like Dan Reeves? Well maybe he wasn’t exactly a good coach but with Elway he did get to three Super Bowls? How many did he get to with Vick?
Vick is just another version of Cordell Stewart and how many Super Bowls did “slash” bring to Pittsburg?
Not being an Atlanta fan, I hope the Falcons keep Vick, but if you think he is ever going to turn into even an average NFL QB, you are delusional.

Tito,
This is a serious question, how does Vick’s playoff record compares to Manning’s? My guess is that there isn’t that big of a difference. Again, this is a team sport. Vick does share some of the blame, but he wasn’t getting torched like our DB’s, we wasn’t up front blocking, and he didn’t sign John Abraham, a player who’s been hurt his whole career. Let’s be spread the blame around like it should be.

you guys are blind. micheal vick was the best player in football for 7 games in the middle of the season. one of which his tight end was name nfl player of the week. the other week vick was named nfl player of the week. the world knows that there was about 4 games in a row that the wide recievers and our pro bowl tight end dropped about 150 yards a game in passes. heck in 3 games vick and the falcons were robbed of 6 touchdowns from dropped passes.

Good Article!!!
I think that one of the major reasons why Vick still has his followers is that some people tend to see him as a single player as opposed to being part of the Falcons team or the NFL for that matter. Vick is a tremendous athlete but does Vick fit in the role of a QB? How does he compare with others? Vick has been in the league for 6 years. His 2001 draft mates, QBs of course, have either 1) excelled (Brees), 2) Relegated as a backup (Weinke) or 3)Out of the league (Carter). In 6 years a QB has to be in one of these categories and unfortunately Vick isn’t in one of them. Now, one can argue that Vick excelled in running the ball but then again, as a QB, running the ball should not be his core strength. A QB’s strength should be focused on managing the game, reading defenses, passing the ball and, most important, being a leader of the football team. Unfortunately, Vick falls short in these areas.
Some people will argue that Vick needs a new coach that will help him develop as a QB. I have been one of those people who hoped that Vick will indeed someday develop into one but quite frankly, after seeing his performance the past couple of years, that hope has turned to frustration.
I think Troy Aikman, during the Eagles/Falcons game, best summed up the Falcon’s situation - The Falcons have a good offensive scheme, a QB who is built for it, but then they have Mike Vick.

The playoff record of Peyton Manning is much better than Vick’s as was the playoff record of Jake Plummer and Denver sacked Plummer in the middle of the playoff run because the Broncos understood that Plummer like Brian Griese was not the answer to Denver’s QB problems. Will Atlanta do the same with Vick? Very doubtful.
And BP, yes, Elway was exciting, but he was also a QB that took his teams to five Super Bowls and if he had not be coached by Dan would have won more than just two of them. How many Super Bowls has Vick brought to Atlanta?

it’s funny to see people blindly defend mike vick. you spend your money, time who know what else to valiantly defend him against (morons, imbeciles, rednecks, people who know nothing about football) yet you guys are missing one important factor. mike vick doesn’t care about you. he doesnt’ care that you bought his jersey or spent the last day, week, year defending him to anyone that will listen. no, this guy is all about himself. he doesn’t care about your sorry a**, he doesnt’ care about this team, he doesn’t care about those that defend him LIKE HIS COACH. he doesn’t care that he has regressed as a leader and as a person.
some of you like to think that the critics like myself blame mike vick for all of the falcons shortcomings. you are wrong. get over it. my beef with vick is he’s not a leader. the quarterback position is the most visible and usually the quarterback represents the entire franchise. now besides mike vick being one of the most exciting players in nfl history. what has he done that show that he has matured through the years?
let’s list some of the great qb’s throughout football history… montanta, elway, marino, moon, fouts, namath, manning (peyton), favre, aikman, brady, mcnabb……
on common characteristic about all these guys. THEY WERE LEADERS OF MEN! THE REST OF THE ENTIRE TEAM COULD COUNT ON THESE GUYS TO LEAD THEM WHEN THINGS GOT SOUR. mike vick on the other hand says he had a great season, which of course should have been better if he had competent teammates…lol something a natural leader would say right?
some people have a burning, intense desire to win. i’m not saying vick does not. but he’s too nonchalant to lead an entire team. his teammates respect him for his physical attributes (speed and a cannon of an arm) they can’t possibily respect him for the intangible characteristics. he QUIT in the final game last year and admitted as much. (how stupid was that?) people criticized him for QUITTING on the falcons in the dallas game. now mike vick with all his amazing ability is now labeled AS A QUITTER, COACH KILLER, SPINELESS, RUDE, CRUDE, EGOMANIAC! all he cares about his is image and himself. i’ve defended him for too long only to be disappointed in the worst way this year. not only by his lackluster performance on the field but his lack of maturity and character.

Of all the quarterbacks in the NFL this season, if I had to pick one I felt would lead my team to a Super Bowl, it would NOT be Mike Vick.
I guess that makes me a racist…
Here are my three choices:
1) Tom Brady
2) Steve McNair
3) Jeff Garcia
Notice that I placed the BLACK Steve McNair at #2 on the list, but I left out Mike Vick.
I also left out the loser Peyton Manning - as a side note, what color was the quarterback that won the National Championship for Tennessee AFTER Manning left? He was BLACK! But, he was also a great COLLEGE quarterback. Peyton Manning is a great PRO quarterback, but I have no faith in his ability to win the “big games”.
So, anyway, I left Mike Vick off my list because I’m a racist, right?
Or could it be that Mike Vick is worthless as a quarterback, and the Falcons would be better off not even letting him throw the ball, sort of like what the Panthers did against the Falcons a few weeks ago.
Mike Vick continues to play football because he sells merchandise, and that’s what Arthur Blank is all about: money. Selling merchandise makes him money, and that’s what he cares about. Sure, he wants a Super Bowl win, but that is second after selling merchandise and making money. He knows that as long as #7 plays, hordes of Blacks will buy tons of #7 merchandise.
Look for a uniform change next year, in order to sell more #7 merchandise…

wings you are pathetic and i’m guessing a 14 yr old thug who washes cars for a living??
Remember Reeves was a great coach years ago, especially with Elway, but the game passed him by. Thats why Denver canned him and he lost in NY. The super bowl was a fluke IMO because the team did not even show up to play that day. Elway walked all over the falcons and mr reeves. If you are going to make it to the big show, at least make it look good. Than his one of his star players (thug) went out partying the night before the super bowl when he’s wife and kids were 3 blocks away sleeping.
I also blame Mora a lot in not helping ron mexico grow up and attempt to lead this team with good morals. Did someone mention “any given sunday”…

At the end of the season the Foulcons were 7-9. At the end of last season they were 8-8. That’s not tremendous success! Vick threw eleven touchdowns in three games. In the other thirteen he threw nine. The Foulcons did not defeat any team with a winning record. It’s time to have a quarterback who is more consistent, one who cares about the team record and not just personal records. Vick may remain the quarterback but if he does the Foulcons will remain hapless losers. Hopefully, a new coach will tell Mr. Blank the Foulcons can not be consistent winners until they have a consistent quarterback who cares more about getting to a Super Bowl than getting on Sports Center.

Good Comment “E”. YOUR ARE ONLY AS GOOD AS THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU. Look at Michael Jordan. He didn’t win those games by himself. It was a team effort… He had good players around him who made those passes to him and who he made passes to. Look at who his coach was… A team is only as good as the coach. A good coach will take the team only as high as his experience and knowledge of the game, and knows how to motivate and get the best out of his players. It’s actually funny to read comments about Vick from people who don’t know what they are talking about.

To all who love Vick because he is black:
Enjoy your black QB and the mess he has caused the Falcons. Beat your chests and chant your black power rants.
You should be more concerned with winning football games and going to the Superbowl. Mike Vick is toast. He will never take this team anywhere.
He is a low-life thug. We have a decent Black QB in Shockley. He comes from a good family and is a college graduate. That means he is smarter than Vick and perhaps can read a defense.
Imagine that… a smart, black QB! Yes, bring in Shockley. The city would embrace him and a person of his moral makeup would not give the fans the finger.

I don’t get this need to hire an offensive mind as a head coach. Sure I wouldn’t mind it but above anything else the Falcs need someone that can make them dominant on either side of the ball. Personally I think if the Falcs had a Chicago Bears like defense we wouldn’t be having this discussion.
Our QB position (Vick) is not the (sole) reason we went 7-9 folks. Our defense at times was so lacking. No pass rush, aversion to blitzing, questionable DBs, questionable free safety play. Just remember when Vick had multiple TD games how many points did the defense give up?
*How many balls were dropped by WRs? *How many times did u wonder “What is up with the playcalling?” *How many times did u wonder “What do the Falcs do all week to prepare for this game?” *How many times were we 3rd or 4th and short and couldn’t convert? *How long did the O-line give Vick to make a pass on average?
What i want to see out of the Falcs is a system, not gimmicks, not streaks of luck.. kinda like what u see in Philly, New England, and Denver. Those teams can almost plug in any player (that fits their schemes) and they still are successful.
True it takes time and competence to build it but thats what this franchise needs to be successful.

Reeves was not a great coach, he was good to average. He had Elway and went 0-3 in the Super Bowl, the last one he lost 55-10, gave up 35 points to the Redskins in the Super Bowl before that.
Ask Elway if he thinks Reeves was a good coach? The only reason the Broncos didn’t blow out the Falcons was Shanahan knew he had won the game after the second quarter as long as Denver didn’t make any foolish mistakes and so played a very conservative game the second-half and still beat Reeves and the Falcons by 15.

It’s very funny how “Wings” is getting the better of some of these bloggers. I agree with much of what he’s said though and I’m no racist.
Whoever, the Falcons next coach is, he must have complete control of all of the players. A man who will demand that they perform or find themselves being shipped out. There has to be accountability. Without it, they might as well hire a high school coach. A bigger offensive line, a secondary that can actually cover and tackle more creative plays on offense is a absolute must. Vick will need to show that he can improve during the off season. Especially in the passing game. The receivers will need to improve and show that they can run good routes, get separation and CATCH the friggin ball. We need a bruiser at running back. Some one who can be consistent in the short yardage game. That hurt the Falcons as much as anything this year. I grew up in Atlanta and i will not give up on the Falcons no matter what. As for all of the racial stuff..well you respond to what you want to respond to. If it doesn’t apply to you, why keep responding? Unless it strikes a nerve. I’ve seen much, much worse than what “wings’ has said on here. The “N” word has been tossed around like a hot potatoe. Check out some of the things being blogged by “Mean D” and others. The Vick enthusiasts, when talking of why he should remain the quarterback of the Foulcons, mention only his contract. That’s it! They don’t talk about his great abilities, only his contract. When his many failures are brought up they respond with criticisms of the line, the receivers, the coaching, etc. Mike Vick has failed! The Foulcons are a losing team. The coach has just been fired and the coach killing quarterback is to blame. Many say nothing can be done and they may be correct. Vick may remain with the team but he’s not the guy who will ever preside over a Super Bowl offense. He is more trouble than anything else and he should be relegated to second string if the Foulcons can’t find the integrity to cut him from the team. A new batch of coaches and a new offensive scheme may allow Vick to deflect blame for a time but that’s getting old and it won’t work forever. he’s managed to get many of you to blame Mora and Knapp for the miserable records of the past two seasons. What about 2004? The record that season, with the same coaches, was 11-5. Those who love Vick attributed that success to him. It was only when things went off the track that we started hearing all this stuff about the coaching. It’s time to blame the person who deserves it most-Mike Vick!

Defense is important, but you have to score to keep up in the case your defense falls flat that day. The Falcons defense did ok considering the number of reserves they played and the bad CB’s. I saw a number of games where your defense played ok, but the offfense never could drive the ball down the field… boring boring boring. All Ron Mexico’s fault, no way, but a large part of it. Titothebear,
why has Vick failed? Is it because he has no offensive line blocking for him? No receivers catching? Bad play calling? Bad coaching?
Vick should have had at least 24 TD’s this season counting the drops. The Falcons could not run the ball in from the 5 yard line in several games. This is not a Vick issue.

Who gives the proverbial rat’s you-know-what whether one alienates Mike Vick or not? He purports himself to be a full grown man; expect him to behave like one. Real, honest grown ups don’t flip the crowd off when it was your inability to perform that caused it in the first place. To Mr. Blank,
Thanks for the new year present of vacating Head Coach position. As for future replacemen, I would be pleased and appreciate if you will consider interviewing UGA Mark Ritch. I think he is the right type with the right skill that you need to make this the Falcons a lasting winning team.
I know it is hard for you to accept the fact that MV7 is a bad investment decision. But, please, keep him will mane more harms than goods. From my himble view, the combine quality of Matt Schaub and DJ Shokley is better than MV7. Please trade him along with those big price tag under achievers like Abraham, Reese, Hartwell.
Anyhow, in case you are stuck with them, can you implement something to make sure that the players will “EARN” their pay check and really showup on game day? Perhaps, something like 40% of their paycheck will be determined based on their performance at the game each week. Drop ball, missed tackle, give up big play, miss finding open WR would result in those 40% of their money will be paid to the local charities.
Please also make them feel that the money that the fan spent to buy the tickets are all very hard earn. So, make those players work hard for their pays as well … even in the off season. They must report to work, workout, study game plan, etc etc…

Everyone who makes comments about Vick’s arm strength needs to remember this is not a Punt, Pass & Kick competition. An NFL QB needs to be an ACCURATE passer, not just a ball slinger. Vick may or may not win the PP&K competition against other NFL players, but he is surely not winning any accuracy competition. Also, given that he did succeed in Yr 1 with Mora, basically the same blockers, and the same RB and has steadily digressed since, seems to me that that year was an abberration rather than the rule. He has not thrown a 4th qtr TD pass in 2 years. This is the most telling stat to me in that he doesn’t SEEM to be able to find a way to finish. THIS IS NOT A RACIST REACTION, it is simply loking at the results. I am white and I wish we had a Tony Dungy or Herm Edwards as HC rather than Jim Mora and Steve McNair or Vince Young at QB rather than M.Vick. I happen to like these guys results vs the Mora/Vick led teams the past two years.

My point about Eli was directed at SCbird who claims that Vick’s record is similar to Peyton’s—only if you are smoking crack would you make this claim.
But yes this year Eli beat Vick and the Falcons and unlike the Falcons are not going to be watching the start of the playoffs on TV, but will be in them.
I’d pick Eli over Vick too. I’d pick Griese over Vick. Hopefully if Atlanta ever offered Vick to the Broncos, Mike Shanahan, Pat Bowlen and Ted Sundquist would have the sense to say “no.”

Vick is a huge part of the problem but he isn’t the only problem. WR, Coaching, the offensive line, and the teams heart are all in question.
Yes you can trade Vick Birddog. It would cripple us for next year but we are currently 10 million under the cap and could still sign Shaub. He might be the only thing we could sign with the exception of Kerney.
The signing bonus is prorated so basically Vick would be owed next year and possibly the following year upon a trade. You also have to keep in mind that while we would take a hit we would also be freeing up his salary. If I understand the NFL’s agreement correctly. I guess I could be misunderstanding but I don’t think so.

Define successful because the Falcons haven’t been successful (that means winning the Super Bowl in case you were confused) since this team first emerged on land back in 1966.

Yes Arthur, you’ve sunk the entire team by overestimating the value of Vick. At a minimum the next move should be to tell Vick he needs to give back about $60M to make some salary cap room for the good of the team. Here’s the deal Vick fans. If you make Ron Mexico the starting QB for the Baltimore Ravens next week, do they become odds-on favorites to win the Super Bowl? I say they’re better off with McNair.

No. I love QBs that can win which also don’t include Brian Griese or Jake Plummer both of which are white last time I checked.
And my friendly imposter the Falcons can go 0-16 for the next 100 years for all I care. Not a team I support. If you want to keep Vick—fine with me since the Falcons winning another game doesn’t really matter to me, but if you want to actually see this sorry excuse for a team win something the QB problem is one (not the only) of the problems you need to address.

Allen Rossum, Jimmy Williams, and Jason Webster will continue to get roasted by average WR’s. John Abraham will continue to play 5 games a year and count heavy against the cap as he has his whole career. The OL will countinue to give up lots of sacks. I think what norm chow says in this story about Vince Young is what Vick is lacking. Chow, who worked with Heisman Trophy winners Leinart and Carson Palmer at Southern California, is considered one of the finest teachers of quarterbacks in the business. What does he like most about Young, who left Texas after his junior season?
“Besides the physical skills, it’s the will and the strength inside, the ‘it’ factor that a quarterback either has or doesn’t have,” Chow said. “Obviously, he has it. The quickness in which he won the team over and the quickness in which he became the leader, the guy everybody looked up to, that was special.
“Vince Young has this great ability to lift others around him. To see him do it so quickly, that wasn’t a surprise, but it was certainly good to see.”

I don’t think us Bronco fans are in much of a mood to be celebrating since we got beat by a 7-9 team to get knocked out of the playoffs and then having one of our corners murdered, but at least we had the sense to sack our QB when it was obvious Plummer was not the answer. How many losing seasons and miss playoffs will it take Atlanta to come to the same conclusion? We also knew that Griese wasn’t the answer, but Atlanta keeps up the myth that Vick is some sort of great QB. I am sure the rest of the leauge thanks you for holding on to this myth.

Young’s td run to beat the texans in overtime was not at all better than Vick’s to beat the vikings in 2002. His defense has bailed him out plenty (just look at the jacksonville game)—something the falcons haven’t done with vick. Vick was lights out better than Young in his first year as a starter, so why all the Young hype?

Really, arguing over the NFL isn’t much better than arguing over professional wrestling.
Face it folks: Mike Vick continues to play football because he sells merchandise, whether it be jerseys, deodorant, sports drinks, or game-day seats - he sells it. People buy it because they look up to him (for whatever reason).
His abilities, or lack thereof, have no bearing on his playing in the NFL. He continues to play because Arthur Blank and the NFL continue to make money off of him.
The NFL is, first and foremost, a business that makes money. If you want REAL sporting competition, I suggest you start following your local Rugby football teams - those guys play the game to WIN, and there’s no organization behind the teams that makes money off of losers.
Meanwhile, the healthy attitude regarding the NFL is the same you have towards the WWF - both are low-brow opera, geared towards men, and are both blatantly homo-erotic…not that there’s anything wrong with that…

For all of you out there that know the real deal on Vick, don’t let the illiterates drag you down to their level. There are morons on both sides; the blacks one that are going to back him no matter how bad he is because they see any critisism of him as an attack on their “culture” and there are the white ones that hate him because he is a black quarterback. Both of these groups are dumb@$$’es. Football ain’t about color. It is about WINNING. The frustrating thing to all of us out here who love football and that want Atlanta to be a winner is, are Blank and McKay sticking with him only because he is black? Is that what black people want? Do they want their atheletes to be great only because they are black? There have been many white quarterbacks that stunk and the fans have called them for it. Same with every other position on the field. Everyone, the white and the black fans need to get the color thing out of this argument. One fact is for sure; Vick stinks as a quarterback. That ain’t no “front” to his color, his heritage or anything else. It is a fact.

There is no reason the Falcons couldn’t win a SuperBowl with Vick. They were one game away from the SB two years ago. The problem with the Falcons is — and always has been — consistency. They are never consistent. They can beat the defending SB champs one Sunday and lose to Cleveland and Detroit other Sundays.
Consistency comes from the top. Blank needs to hire the coach that has a proven record of consistency with players, game plan and work ethics. I think Mora had a good start but he slacked off and got too cozy with the players instead of the mission.
For those who think putting Schaub at QB instead of Vick would make the Falcons a better team — you are dreaming and should be traded as a fan of another NFL team.

trez-paz, you have way too much time on your hand. It is people like you who are jealous of Vick because of his potential as a black athlete. You are afraid that he will start a trend which is already beginning in college football all the way to the NFL that is demanding a more mobile quaterback. Such as Vick. You saw it in Vince Young, you saw it in the benching of Drew Bledsoe for Romo. Fact is Vick is the begining of this movement! He is redefining the role of the Quaterback and the only way you can stop him is by writing meaningless blogs that Arthur Blank does’nt care about. Rich Mckay doesn’t care about and chances are probably 90% of falcons fans don’t care about. I’ll start knocking Michael Vick when the receivers become receivers and the offensive linemen become offensive linemen. Until then, the idea of just loosing 6 games in a row with Matt Schaub starting at QB is absurd. Matt Schaub could’nt beat Vick while he was at West Virginia, what makes you think that he could beat him now! He just looses every game he get’s in! Dare I say against 3rd stringers!

I hope that their are 31 other general mangers that feel as strong as about Shaub. The truth is that Michal Vick is our qb. Shaub is our trade bait. Hopefully we can get a first round pick for him. Would be nice to get a run blocking offense lineman and a safety with speed in the 1st round of the draft. If we can get a quality defensive end in the 2nd round that would make my day.
Shaub will be a pretty good quaterback in the nfl. I dont think that he will ever become a superstar, but im hoping that there is a team in the nfl wanting to sign him as a potentional starter. Hopfully in the 3rd or with one of our 4th round picks we can pick up another doug johnson/matt schaub. Why keep supporting someone that wont be around next season.

If the cap doesn’t allow a Vick trade let’s move him to running back and let Schaub be the QB. The offense would be much better assuming we get a little more protection up front.
The defense needs help in the secondary. We might have beaten the 3rd sting Eagles if we had not given up the 89 yard TD pass after closing to 17-14.

By Hire Me - Dan Reeves
January 3, 2007 06:36 PM | Link to this
Fans of Atlanta, here is why you should want me(Dan Reeves) to be your coach again. Remember, I’m the only coach that has led you to a Superbowl appearance. I demonstrated with a healthy Mike Vick that I could coach him effectively, in fact effectively enough to be the only team to win a playoff game in Greenbay. Okay, sure I forgot once that I had a 265lb running back at my disposal and appeared to not be innovative enough to use Dunn and Duckett. However, how effective was the Mora regime in doing so? Ask yourself, how many years does Mike Vick have at a high level? Lets assume 3-4. Now consider that Arthur has already made an error in hiring a none proven coach(Mora) as my replacement and it took 3 years to determine that the system does not fit the quarterback skill set. What happens when the next unproven coach(NFL head coaching experience)goes 7 and 9 the first year? There will be tremendous pressure and 2nd guessing. Keep in mind, this is the highest payroll in the league and there is very little room for error now. Meanwhile, time is running out in getting an investment return with the $140million QB. Hey, I’m not your long-term solution, but I’m the best chance to help build this program in the short-term(2-3 years) while Arthur search for the long-term solution. I know how to use Mike and my strategy is sound fundamental football, which has won in every city I have coached. Jerry Buss admitted a mistake in firing Phil Jackson and now he is back with the Lakers even after a tell all book. Remember, when Mike Vick returned from injury during our last year together, we won 3 out of 4 games against playoff teams. Well utimately, I was let go because Arthur was looking at the long-term solution for this team and I wasn’t it. People get real, look at the free agent acquisitions that have been made, the error in coaching hire, the drafting errors; do you trust that Arthur and Mckay will get this next coaching hire correct in such a short time. I say no! But they can if they hire me back short-term. Think about it, I believe based on my success in Denver and Atlanta, I can get you to the Superbowl within 2-3 years. Otherwise, flip the coin and take your chances. One more false move and this franchise goes over the edge for years. Just look at the Hawks. They are right under your noses. Do you smell the stench??

this text will be boldedHello Michael Vick haters and ignorant football watchers! Riddle me this. How is it that you all are so adamant about Mike Vick being the cause of the Falcons two year playoff drought, yet when you never mention our 22nd ranked defense that appears to wilt in the 4th quarter of every game. I think it completely baseless to say that Vick is THE problem. He may very well turn out to have been part of the problem, but he is definitely not THE problem. And for those stuck on money….cap room is not a problem. we’re 10-15 mil under the cap!

Relax folks. I hear you loud and clear and understand your frustration. I too want to make this an organization that is of a winning tradition such as the Denver Broncos or the New York Giants. Since 1966 this organization has never once had back to back winning seasons. The previous owners were a bunch of hillbilly hicks who used this team as a tax break.
I came here to clean house and start fresh and I promise that I will earn your trust. I did get rid of that cry baby Mora did I not. He is lame as his daddy was. And to think I fell for his sales pitch when he has always had a lousy record as a coach… Should have listened to Lovie more closly… Now, you cannot blame the last six years on my boy Mike, or as I like to call him “Ronnie Mexico.” Ronnie is trying his best. He cannot help it if he came from a broken home, enjoys the pleasures of drugs and alcohol, banging whores and simple telling the hard paying blue collar fans to kiss his a* by showing his middle finger. See he had a rough life and has promised me that he will again try to grow into a man and lead by example. He has shown promise thus far in removing the “thug” image. He no longer allows his brother to sell drugs from his house and has limited his posse to 10. He is even taking on-line courses to learn to read so mr. Knapp does not have to use crayons or magic markers. He promised to show character out in public by not wearing his shorts/pants pulled down to his knees, diamonds in his ears and will even wear his ball cap on straight. I even saw him watching film of John Elway the other day hoping to understand how you throw to a reciever more than 10 yards down the field.
Oh we were all young once yes. Heck when I was Ronnie’s age I use to cat around alittle myself. But I never had a taste for coke or weed… oh my. Mrs Blank would never allow it. And heck, herpes is just a simple STD, so relax…and so he likes to have kids out of wedlock..and carry guns from time to time with the posse… So let’s be nice to Ronnie because it really hurts his feelings when he hears all this talk of trades and that he is not really “superman”. He can hear all the critics on TV and Radio (except the brothers on 2-live crew of course) who have said over and over that he is a great athlete, but a lousy passer and leader and team player and role model and ball carrier and father. It hurts the boy so much to hear all things that we tell him are not true.
So from Flowery Branch, Rich, myself and Mrs Blank send our best to you and all the hard working Falcon fans. Happy New Year and lets go get them in 2007.

I don’t think anybody on the board knows for sure whether Vick is going to be a championship QB or not. He is an incredible talent, who may have been forced to play in a system which did not allow him to play at his best.
He has a much stronger arm than either Montana or Young, two great west coast QBs, but his is too short to be a 3 step and a 5 step QB, plus he does not at this time have the touch you need for short and medium passes.
I was excited about Michael Vick as any fan during this first two years as a full time starter (one under Reeves and one under Mora), but every time he put something on tape every defensive coach studied to see what you could do to minimize is running threat, cover the timed patterns and give Michael a look downfied he did not expect.
I wish Arthur had not committed to such a long expensive contract, before we knew what his long range value would be.
Blank may turn out to be right and I hope he is, but it puts incredible pressure on his coaching staff, if besides trying to win in an incredible tough competive enviroment they have to keep justifying the owners decision.
If the next staff who I am sure will adjust the offense to mamimized Mike’s talents, finds out in spite of his talents he is the problem what’s the answer?
Don’t get me wrong, I am a Vick fan, but is incredible skill to run, will diminish with time, plus his style exposes him to allot of colisions, other QB don’t have to take. Plus those defensive coaches and players are paid to minimise his abilty as a runner.
Randle Cunningham was as close to Michael in skill as anybody I have seen; under Buddy Ryan, he took a fairly deep drop pick out of receiver he wanted to throw to and if he was opend he delivered the ball, if he wasn’t he started to scramble, still looking to throw. He was second only to Vick as a running QB. Toward the end of his career, he as reading coverages and would go two or three options before scrambling. He was very productive in his last few years.
Coaching wise Michael has had more disipline in his early years, but if I am right and I may not be, Dan Reeves passing game which was more of a 7 step deeper pattern type of passing game fits Vick’s skills better tham the West coast offense.
I hope the new staff’s marching orders are to create the best possible offense which will enhance Michael’s innate talents always keeping in mind this game is about winning, which means you go to play B, if they discover play A was a mistake.

You know, we didn’t hear anything about a twenty-second rared defense when the Foulcons were five and two this season. We didn’t hear any such garbage when they were 6-2 last year. It’s only when Vick screws up and the Foulcons lose that we hear that crap. The problem with the Foulcons is Mike Vick! The Foulcons will start getting better when that loser is dropped!

Something tells me that inside that locker room, the Atlanta Falcons players would laugh at all of the people that talk about trading Vick. Actually, they wouldn’t even listen to the nonsense that these people speak. With that being said, if you have paid any attention to what the players have said, they believe Schaub can have a good NFL career. You don’t hear any of them saying that he’ll be the next Brett Favre, let alone the QB of the Falcons. Don’t get me wrong, I like Schaub and hope we don’t trade him. As a matter of fact, I hope we keep him and see what Vick does next year (and then make a decision).
When you look at the HC, they should hold on until Cowher makes a decision. And if he decides to move on from the Steelers, then make a serious run at him. Cowher should be option A and any other guy should be B.
FYI: Some of you people that make underhanded racist comments on this blog or any blog should get a life. If you don’t like a player talk about his game not about his color. And if you decide you want to talk about his color, then shout the same comments about him at a game… For some odd reason I believe the fans around you, both white and black, will literally kick your a$$.

Atlanta has one of the most successful coaches in NFL history living in the city. Who by the way was foolishly fired in a year in which the starting quarterback missed 12 games due to injury. Nevermind the fact that in just the previous year with a very young quarterback and a mediocre line this coach managed to make history by defeating Green Bay at home in a playoff. You also have to overlook the fact that this coach was the only coach in the teams history to make it to a Surperbowl (sure they lost in a big way but you have to be there to win)Mr. Blank, what in the world were you thinking about when you fired Dan Reeves under these circumstances? If you made a habit out of making this kind of poor management decision at Home Depot you would have never been in a position to buy a NFL season ticket much less a NFL Franchise. As all good leaders do you need to admit your mistake and dial up Coach Reeves. Even if he is not interested, it would show that you are a leader who is willing to admit his mistakes.

This comment is for Barney Strickland and everybody elses dumb!ss that has been talking about Mike Vicks “intelligence.” Though I am not defending Wings of Victory, I just have a point fresh off the Sugar Bowl coverage. I want to tell you arguments are hollow and partly race related. As I stated before I am white. To be honest I don’t even like “Rap.” (Bocepheus Forever!!!) I am even from Bonaire, GA. (Sonny Perdue’s Hometown.) I work at a location with a lot of multi-ethnic individuals not unlike a “team.” All our jobs rely on our collective performance to be successful. Besides as a Iraq vet, I didn’t care about the next man’s color. When bullets are wizzing by your ear and explosions go off within feet of you, I worried more that if trouble came to pass, did he “have my back.” I can assure the next man worried if I had his. Our survival depended on each other. I say that to show that no matter background and origins, race should NOT matter.
But my point is Terry Bradshaw is arguably one of the best NFL quaterbacks to play the game. The man has count them 1….. 2….. 3….. 4….. Super Bowl Rings. However, he just admitted on National TV on the Fox Network right around 9:30 pm that he wanted to go to his home state school, Louisana State University. He was even HEAVILY recruited for the school. But the MAIN REASON he didn’t go and had to go to a much smaller Div II school is (his words) “I couldn’t pass the damn ACT or SAT exams!!!”
Now with your thought process, Terry Bradshaw would be more like Ryan Leaf (a bust) than (a) Hall of Fame(r) if “INTELLIGENCE” was the barometer of success. Now Barney Strickland I wasn’t calling you directly a dumb!ss, so this isn’t a personal attack against you as much as the other actual Dumb!sses on here who are blatantly racist. To the contrary, I am just using the hole in your logic with your own words to show how hollow and suspect your comments actually are.

u rednecks are retards.. Vick is the best thing to ever happen to ATL. The Braves can’t get pass the first round of baseball series and the Hawks just sucks. Vick will bring championship to ATL. Go Vick we support u. And Mr Blank why did u fire Jim Mora, give him another chance and trade Schaub for Randy Moss. Just me Vick will be happy and ATL will have a champion.

I think the issue with Vick and the Falcons is related more to the salary cap than to Vick’s talent level. The Salary Cap is in place to be sure no team has all-pro’s at every position, thus we will approach a fair playing field. I think this team needs quite a few fundamental pieces before it will be ready to control a game: quality oLinemen, quality dLinemen, quality secondary, depth at RB. Our problem is, there is not enough money under the cap for all of these pieces to upgrade. Also, you need draft picks to get young quality talent. Solution? You have to trade Vick and probably one other of the highest paid players in exchange for cap room and picks. This is not Vick bashing…this is reality…Vick cannot be expected to perform without a decent oLine and good receivers. The reality is; however, that a team cannot afford to have Vick and a great oLine and great receivers and a great D all at the same time. I think we take our chances with the backup QB’s and upgrade the team overall in the areas I indicated. Let Vick go to a team where they already have a good oLine, so he has a chance to succeed without getting his head caved in from all the “running for his life” he does due to our limited oLine. People, we can’t have it all, I think having Mike Vick without a quality oLine, is like having all sizzle and no steak. Call me a racist, it’s the only response some people have.

I believe the best coach for the Falcons right now would be Jim Mora, Sr. Jim Mora’s dad was a very successful coach with the Saints back when he was coaching and I think Mora, Sr. would absolutely light a fire under the Falcons players and get them to play with more consistency and with more intensity, two areas that the Falcons are lacking in. Grant Mora Sr. an interview and see if he he comes to coach the “Coach Killer”.

Hey Art..
You’re not taking this UWa thing seriously are you? I was joking, just kidding around with an old pal on his radio show. Hell he’s not even syndicated. I’m well aware we have a huge game against the Okla St., er..Dallas Cowboys this weekend and would never be stupid enough to put my career on the line over a silly thing like this. We’ll be fine..the guys love me, especially Michael, and he’s the killer, uh..pillar of the franchise.
You can bank on us winning out. I’ll see ya at the SuperBowl!!

Yo Arty Party…
You was tho’in down at da club last night. I love the new aka, “Bobby Dinero”…chicks dig money man. Listen, this Mora clown’s gotta go. He thinks we’re like buddies or somethin’. If he was lettin’ me do my thing I’d have thrown 40 TDs this year AND run for 2000 yds. I miss the last coach…that old dude. He slept alot and stayed out of my business. Anyway, I’m doin’ whatever it takes to ditch the Mora guy so don’t make any reservations for the playoffs. We should fly down to Cabo for some off season capers.
Peace MV7

trade Schaub and Dunn for Moss and Porter from Oakland. Raiders will have Schaub, Dunn, and Calvin Johnson. We will have Vick, Moss and Porter, with Norwood at RB.
