When team quits, coach must go
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Flowery Branch — He had to go, and for so many reasons. We needn’t go further than that self-inflicted dagger through the heart of Jim Mora’s coaching career with the Falcons. In case you missed the bloody truth in the aftermath of his firing on Monday, his players just quit on him for the second straight year.
To have your players vanish through indifference once is bad enough. Twice, and you definitely have to go.
This is the same Mora who spent three seasons chest-bumping and overly praising everybody in his locker room when he wasn’t snorting ammonia caps with all of them on the sideline. It was enough to make his players often speak of how they loved the guy. Well, they loved the guy so much that they quit on him against Carolina to seal last season’s underwhelming finish, and then they quit on him Sunday in Philadelphia against a bunch of folks at the end of the Eagles’ bench.
So here’s my advice to Falcons owner Arthur Blank and franchise guru Rich McKay during their search for a new head coach: Stay away from “player coaches” because they eventually get assassinated by their players. Falcons players had good reason to do so in this case.
In contrast to that Carolina fiasco, when Falcons quarterback Michael Vick even admitted to yawning through it all, Mora’s players quit on him to end this season because he quit on them with three games left to play. That’s when Mora shamelessly campaigned for the University of Washington job when his players were scrambling down the stretch in search of the playoffs. Not a good way to win friends and influence people who have the power to save your job.
Despite what Falcons players might say, they wanted Mora gone, and you could tell by their listless play, not only against the Eagles, but against the pitiful likes of Detroit and Cleveland and the depleted likes of Carolina. Even if the Falcons had done the unlikely by discovering ways to reach the playoffs with a strikingly flawed roster, Mora was a firing waiting to happen.
There was the football stuff, exemplified by the Falcons’ inability to adjust during games (0-17 when entering the fourth quarter behind, baffling offensive schemes, strange personnel decisions). Then there was all of that other stuff.
Way too much of the other stuff.
You know about some of them. They range from Mora slinging his headset in an ugly tantrum after a postgame question that he didn’t like from a Falcons radio announcer, to ripping franchise legends Mike Kenn and Jeff Van Note for being too quote-friendly (at least in Mora’s mind) during their playing careers. As for the rest of Mora’s explosions, well, there were so many of them that it is difficult to separate fact from fiction. Plus, the real ones are too numerous to list in this space.
Translated: He had to go. You also have to consider that Blank is the ultimate czar of image. He likes to boast of bringing the customer-friendly approach that he used during his successful Home Depot days to the Falcons. That said, having a coach who has a habit of being more discussed for his foolishness than for his X’s and O’s isn’t helping you become customer-friendly.
“We’re not going to go through and kind of figure out who shot who and what was said and when it was said,” explained Blank of Mora’s dismissal, and then he quickly added, “This was a very complicated decision for us. It was a variety of factors that came into play. … I simply can’t put a weight on any single one of them. It was a combination of things that kind of brought us to this point.”
A combination of things? That’s the understatement of the year — this one and the previous one.

One coaching note: I hope Joe DeCamilis is re-hired by the next head coach. He’s fired-up and has honed the likes of Tim Dwight and Allen Rossum. (He may need to do it again next year!)
Here’s hoping that Lelie’s shoulder heals and wishing him a Happy New Year, still in Atlanta 2007.
While not related, I’m hoping Mike Singletary will at least get an interview. I gotta believe that much talent and spirit will translate into a charismatic, driven coach who will lead AND use players strengths!
MV7, don’t stop believing. You made so many improvements over the past two years. When everyone else folded, you were still playing your guts out.
Go Falcons!

Good Riddance. Rich McKay should be next, He of the bust draft picks. This guy is as bad as Dannie Reeves(remember Reggie Kelly). For all those who think Schaub is the answer, look at his overall regular season stats. Allen Rossum is not an NFL player, he should be playing for Amsterdam or Toronto. Thankfully, the Falcons only make us live thru 16 games. A Disgusted lifelong fan.

I agree Mora had to go —- that he shot himself in the foot far to often. And, I also agree the team quit on him, which leads me to the question: Who will they play for? As a teacher in a former life, I can tell you that some kids are just not teachable. For whatever reason, some just don’t want to learn and will do whatever they can to keep others from learning and participating in the learning experience. Forgive me, but my observations over the past couple of years leads me to believe that Vick is not teachable —- that he doesn’t want to learn —- that he thinks he knows everything —- that he is untouchable and a disruptive force on the team. I hope he proves me wrong with a new coach. I hope he finds a coach that can motivate him to become more that just a legend in his own mind.

I agree with your assessment. He had to go for the sake of the Falcons. I am glad we have a owner like Blank who will make the best decision for the Falcons. Unlike the Smith’s who did not care about having a winner in Atlanta, Blank has shown that he care about fans and will bring a Super Bowl winner to us.

Coach Killa Ron Mexico who flips off the fans must go as well. He is a “Team Quitta”, the most overpaid boondoggle whom NFL defenses have figured out! Mora blew it, but so does Blank by keeping with this expensive “experiment.”

I would take Dan Reeves back in a second.
Vick could go back to his old offense…which was more succesful in the first place. AND this alone would eliminate new terminology for MV7.
ANYONE else who is brought in has to teach Vick a new offense and that won’t produce overnight.
Mr. Blank, I know it would be more than difficult to admit you were at fault 4 years ago, but Dan Reeves is and was a damn good football coach.
Suck it up and make the hire.

Great players want to be coached, that’s why I believe Vick’s best years were under Reeves, because he actually taught him how to be a leader. That is something Mora had no idea how to do, which is where the problems began. That being said, I do believe that Vick (and the Falcons) need a coach that is able to teach ethics and commands immediate respect. That man is Mike Singletary. He has a well known pedigree for winning and the team will listen to him because he won’t be concerned about making friends but teaching Vick how to be a leader.
The greater question remains is what does this team do on offense. Obviously Dunn won’t be coming back (same with Leile now that Vick’s favorite target Finneran will be healthy) so they will need to bring in an OC who will allow Vick to AUDIBLE as well as spread the field. This team can be a balanced offense when given the opportunity to do so.

Now Arthur & Rich need to look at all the dead weight on the team and clean out lockers accordingly. If you’re going to make race a constant issue; while trying to build a winner of the falcons; this team is dead in the water. Talent at every position must be reviewed thouroughly and previous dumb personnel/financial offers to players who haven’t produced have to be revisited! WE WANT CLASS ACT WINNERS PLAYING FOR THE ATLANTA FALCONS, NOT A BUNCH OF EGOTISTICAL,PHOTO OP BLOW HARDS.

Mr. Ed and Knappy have to go to. I think it was more there lack of preparation and creativity that led to the downfall of the Falcons. Bring in someone who can use guys like Vick, Norwood, Crumpler, 3 1st round WR’s and please get an offensive line that can pass block. Our defensive shemes were horrible. We made every 3rd string QB look like a pro bowler. Bye- Bye 49’ers

NORM CHOW IS THE ANSWER
He tailors his offenses to the strengths of his talent. He did it at USC with QB Matt Leinart and then did it again with the Titans and a completely different style of QB in Vince Young. Michael Vick could really prosper with Chow as well.
But the Falcons better act quickly, because the Cardinals will be looking at Chow - to reunite him with Leinart.

Terrance, do you have the balls to continue to tell it like it is? Such as : 1) Vick is NOT a leader nor a successful NFL QB. He is a great athlete and could be an asset at RB, PR, and KR, but not at QB; 2) that tough guys hit hard but do not need to incur penalties to show their toughness; 3) that Art Blank got taken as an football owner by putting all his eggs into one basket (Vick)thus showing he knows nothing about football and was duped into believing sports are just like any business.

The Falcons are a GA/ALA team not just black ATL. The problem isn’t black Vick vs white Schaub, its the no leader Vick vs any other QB including D.J. who already has more leadership skills than Vick. I haven’t heard one black teammate of Vick come to his defense or say anything resembling like they respect him. They all seem very quiet about his leadership.

To Realist: The first part of your argument is true due to the market and advertising. But you fail to state that players have not disputed Vick on his leadership. In any argument, present both sides. If you don’t like Vick, you just won’t be open minded about his stats. I have compared his stats with others….and perception really is reality. And most “followers” like yourself…drink the Kool-Aid.

i loved mora. i just wish we could have gotten him on his second leg not his first. i just dont think he was ready to be a head coach. he will do a great job his second time around especailly if he gets rid of his best friend and offensive nap creator. wish list. 1.defensive minded head coach with an assistant smart enough to make adjustments at halftime.maybe a guy smart enough to coach from the both and evaluate the game instead of watching the game from the side line and then just calling out a play 2.run pulling guard. we missed alot when we lost forney and lerr. 3.safey with speed. a deion grant clone would make my day. 4. kick/punt returner. rossum hasnt done his job in a couple years. we lost a lot of momentum with his fair catching inside the 5 and his letting the ball drop at the 35 and rolling into the 5 plus his fair catching when no one is around.

If Blank and Co. are looking for a long-term leader, then Norm Chow may not be the answer. I believe he’s 60, but I agree, he’s pliable enough to work with the talent handed to him (unlike control freak, no-audiblizing-allowed Greg Knapp) As for other candidates:
*Ken Whisenhunt - GA Tech grad, obviously intelligent, but he’s only been an OC for three years and he learned under the tutelage of Mike Mularkey.
*Mike Mularkey - I believe he left Buffalo because he didn’t want to work for the cheapskate Wilsons and that dying franchise anymore (once Ralph reaches room temperature, his scions will sell the frachise and it will move to L.A.). Anyway, he made Tommy Maddox into a successful QB for a couple of years, but then again, he couldn’t do anything for Joey Harrington in Miami (where he was OC this year).
*Cam Cameron - Finally was allowed to free the shackles of Martyball and showed creativity and tact in his play calling. SD will win the Super Bowl (what a daring proclamation).
*Bobby Petrino - It’s easy to look like a genius when you’re up against Big East competition. I’m not convinced he’s the answer.
*Kirk Ferentz - a media darling for some reason. He’s like the “cool kid” everyone loves “just because”. I know it’s difficult having to recruit for Iowa, but he hasn’t achieved much. Besides, I saw a game in 2005 in which Iowa was up 17 against Northwestern with 5 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and Iowa ended up losing.
*Bob Stoops - Okay, so he’s won with the best recruits in the country. Big whoop. Oklahoma manages to blow at least one easily winnable game a year since their National Championship.
*Steve Mariucci - I swear, there will be rioting if this lame-as-Hades coach is hired. The Lions quit on him last year! There’s a reason why.
Everyone must keep in mind the last time the Falcons hired the hottest OC in the country, one that called the plays for one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history, his name was Dan Henning and we all know how that turned out.

Terence, you emphasize the off-the-field stuff because that’s what makes headlines, but really the “football stuff” was Mora’s biggest problem. Greater coaches than Mora, in this sport and others, have made stupid remarks to the media and have had off the field incidents but as long as they were coaching they did a great job. Mora’s biggest problem, more than radio interviews or big-mouth dads, was his inability to find a good scheme on either side of the ball and his loyalty to his awful coordinators. Yeah, it would be nice if the next coach had a cattle prod in his hands, but more importantly I hope the next coach can call plays properly and draw up effective schemes.

I’m not a Falcons fan, but I do have a few thoughts for you:
I’m not going to say that Mora was a good coach, but who is he getting replaced with? I can’t think of a single coordinator or college coach that is going to make the jump to the Falcons.
Let’s assume for a second that the players quit on the coach because they wanted him gone. Anyone who is a season ticket holder should be asking Mr. Blank for their money back. Players are paid over a hundred million dollars to play a game, and that money is from the fans. If you have players that aren’t earning their 100 million dollar contract (I’m talking to you Mr. Vick) because they don’t like their boss, then you need to get new players.
A new coach is not going to solve most of the Falcon’s problems. I don’t think any coach can catch a ball for the receivers or block a rusher for the lineman or throw a decent pass for the quarterback. Getting rid of Mora might be a start, but it definately is not the finish.

Just wait till the new staff tries to pour a gallon of knowledge into Vick’s shotglass of a brain. Teams know everything that he knows and his tendencies. They stop the execution of what he knows, they win the game, simple as that. He couldn’t audible at a Taco Bell drive-thru and still can’t accurately and properly deliver a forward pass. His natural talent has taken him as far as he wants to go. He has shown no inclination to get better in the offseason and apparently the brass from Daddy WarBlank on down is afraid to confront him. If he can avoid these lawsuits for passing on an incurable virus and sidesteps aquiring an expensive drug habit, he has enough money to last the rest of his life. He is no better quarterback or teammate for that matter than he was four-five years ago. Psycho Jim was a tumor that had to be removed, it’s time to chemo the growth behind the center too.

I hope the next coach will maintain a proper set of priorities.
Let’s hope the next coach insists on an Oline philosophy like the “Big Boys” Blank admires for their consistency: Philly, and Pittsburgh. There are high draft choices on those lines and they continually re-stock them as a matter of course through the draft. And they are BIG, not little. That’s why they can win late in the seasons. Small nicked up guys get beaten by big nicked up men.
Finally, let’s make sure the offense is a legitimate Pro offense:
We don’t need gimmicks, or liabilities deliberately put in place to make it impossible for anyone but the fastest QB to WIN. Pass protect. PHYSICAL RB. PHYSICAL OLine.
Build an offense where we can plug any competent QB in and WIN some games. Then put Vick in that situation and let those unique talents put the team over the top.
Vick ran for more first downs (54 first down runs in 123 carries) than Dunn (48 in 286 carries). As a reference, Norwood had 27 in 99 carries. Tiki Barber - 78 on 327 carries)
or, put another way, the average number of carries per first down generated:
Vick: 2.3 (unreal) Norwood: 3.7 (very good) Tiki: 4.2 (good) Dunn: 6.0 (“unacceptable”) Tomlinson: 4.3 Larry Johnson: 4.6
We won’t win consistently until we put the same thing around our QB (whoever he is) that other consistent winners put around theirs. No QB can win a championship with this current OLine, soft running starting RB, and butter-fingerd WRs.
I hope the next coach focuses on making those improvements.

Though I hate to see anybody lose his job, Mora brought it on himself. He is the one who hired Knapp and Donatell and they have proven that they don’t know what the hell they are doing. Knapp was so hell bent on sticking Vick in a west coast offense that he still doesn’t know to this day that it was a mistake. A good oc installs an offense that plays to his players strengths. You don’t just go with your offense because it’s your offense. And for God’s sake please let your qb’s audible out of bad plays!!! Donatell; 300+ passing yards to the 3rd string qb pretty much says it all.
My wish-list:
Get some coaches in here who will evaluate the talent on this team and devise schemes that take advantage of those talents.
Finneran to come back 100% and ready to catch those balls that our current crop of receivers seem to have so difficult a time with.
Big mean nasty o-linemen that have a taste for blood and will protect the qb with their lives.
Get some real value for Schaub(u think the Raiders might be interested?)and not trade him just to trade him. Also bring in a cheap veteran backup for Vick to pick up a few pointers from and who can step in and get a W if need be.
D-linemen who are good for more than 3- 5 games a season.
Steve Young as a qb coach(extremely wishful thinking).

I’ve said all along that a lack of accountability is what’s hurting the Falcons most. Everyone on the team has it made in the shade and they know it: Big paychecks for little effort. Maybe I’m old fashioned but I thought pay is usually commensurate with labor performed? It was a given that Jim Mora had to go, and I was saddened to hear that Knapp has somehow survived a purging, even temporarily. He has no useful purpose with the Falcons. As far as Michael Vick, I agree that he is talented but he has certainly been an underachiever. Hopefully, a good coach can change that sad fact, otherwise next year we’ll be dealing with this issue again.

I think Greg Knapp didn’t allow Audibles b/c Vick COULDN’T Aubible..it takes an intellient QB like Manning (who calls many of his own plays w/o and OC) to run an offense. I don’t like Knapp but, bless his heart, he was working with a pea-brained QB who never understood the playbook. He was a good college QB but I think Shockley could understand an offense and read a defense better than Vick. As far as a new coach…I bet somebody like Mike Price might suit the Thuggish persona of this team.

It is obvious Mike Vick can’t be just a quarterback. That would be too easy. He has to be a “black” quarterback and carry all the preconceived notions that the bigots in this country place on his mental abilities. Those people who hate any man of his color just because of the money he makes. They will find fault no matter what. It reminds me of another guy who played this position in the NFL. He was criticised too because of his passing ability. They say he threw the ball without touch. He throws too hard. Even though he made his team a consistent winner, he was never compensated in terms of the white quarterbacks in the league and finally the bigots had their way and he was out of the NFL. Until Joe Gibbs picked him up and Doug WIlliams took the Washington Redskins to the Super Bowl as the underdog team. And while they were putting the Denver Broncos’ John Elway on the Wheaties box Mr. WIlliams was kicking the Broncos out of the game. So send Mike Vick somewhere else. Maybe someone like Joe Gibbs who can see past the black, will look at him as a quarterback…just a quarterback… Someone who wants only to win will let folks see just how good he really is. He should never bring a championship to people who will only find ways to justify their predjudices.

Newsflash from Ms.Cleo Psychic!!!!It’s now 1 Jan 2008 LOSER FALCONS lose another 8 games and Vick laughs all the way to the bank with another 12 million dollars. Mike Vick says he learned the new offense and it’s not his fault but the officials and the NFL is against him running the ball all the time.. Same story just different day, and coach and Vick is still getting paid to lose. Don’t blame the coach blame the QB who sucks and has had 6 years to prove he can win in the NFL and seems to win 7 games. Why do you think that numbers are what makes you winners? If that was the case than Dan Marino would own more Lombardi Trophies than anyone. These are the facts as of 25 Dec 2006.
The formula works if the Falcons take an early lead, but the team is 0-15 under Mora when Atlanta trails entering the fourth quarter.
Vick, meanwhile, has lost the edge he had from 2002-04, when he seemed capable of nearly taking over games at will. He finished 9-for-20 against Carolina for 109 yards, two interceptions and a 22.7 passer rating that’s the third worst of his career.
Entering Week 16, Vick had a fourth-quarter rating (59.4 percent) that ranked 34th in a 32-team league. His receivers were 31st in yards after the catch and 13th in drops.
Michael Vick the 60 million dollar bust and coach killer who can’t understand an NFL West Coast Offense or read an NFL defense.
When the rest of Atlanta Losers I mean Falcons. These are the facts face it. Get over it and get a new QB 6 years 60 million dollars later and no more than 8 wins. I know you are loyal to Vick but reality sucks and so does staying home another year. On his first carry, Vick rushed for 17 yards to become the first NFL quarterback to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. Andersen gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead with a 40-yard field goal in the first quarter that moved him past Gary Anderson for the all-time lead. Andersen now has 539 career field goals.
Vick had four carries for 32 yards and completed 9 of 20 passes for 109 yards with two interceptions.
That makes any team a winner two INT’s and 9 of 20. A great NFL QB the Falcons should win it all every year.
Brees, who came into the day with more than 4,000 yards passing and 25 TDs, finished 13-of-32 for 132 yards on a day his receivers dropped at least eight passes.
— If Vince Young keeps this up, the Tennessee Titans just might do the unthinkable and make the playoffs.
The rookie first-round draft pick has the Tennessee Titans (8-7), who started the season with five straight losses, alive in the AFC playoff race entering the final weekend after rallying them to a 30-29 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
The doubters have motivated Young all season long.
Young threw two touchdown passes and rushed for another to engineer his fourth comeback in the fourth quarter or overtime. This time, he helped Tennessee overcome a 29-20 deficit in the final 12 minutes. After hitting Brandon Jones for a 29-yard touchdown pass, Young engineered a 14-play, 75-yard drive, which Rob Bironas capped with a 30-yard field goal with 2:10 left.
Young’s most electrifying play came at the end of the first half, when he scored on a 36-yard keeper on a fourth-and-2.
Tennessee Passing C/ATT YDS TD INT Young 13/20 183 2 0
Tom Brady directed three long touchdown drives, capped one of them with a perfect touch pass to David Thomas, and helped the Patriots clinch their fourth consecutive AFC East crown with a 24-21 victory against the Jaguars on a rainy Sunday. Brady was brilliant in both games at Alltel Stadium.
He was 23-of-33 for 236 yards and two touchdowns in the Super Bowl victory against Philadelphia. He was even better against the Jaguars (8-7).
He finished 28-of-39 for 249 yards and a touchdown, completing passes to 10 receivers and picking apart the NFL’s second-ranked defense mostly with short and quick throws. He also ran 10 times for 31 yards, getting several first downs on sneaks and scrambling for yards to avoid sacks.
“He’s a great leader,” offensive tackle Matt Light said. “He went out there and did what he always does. Whenever we needed a big play he’s always out there making them.”
Atlanta Passing C/ATT YDS TD INT Vick 9/20 109 0 2 Vick had four carries for 32 yards and completed 9 of 20 passes for 109 yards with two interceptions.
Look at Vick’s numbers against other QB’s who win.
Vick Coach Killer and 60 million dollar bust.
The Falcons (7-8) suffered their fourth-straight home loss.
Vick doesn’t inspire his team to win when he blames them and doesn’t look at himself. Look at Arizona, Leinart he wins and he is a rookie, Tony Romo wins, Drew Brees inspired a city and he swept the Falcons. . It’s about dollars and earing what you are paid. Simple economics. How many people would live in a 60 million dollar house and the roof leaks 50% of the time, or drive a car that works 4 days out of the week. You wouldn’t keep an employee who worked or produced 50% of the time so why allow Vick. Leader he doesn’t inspire the Falcons to win Drew Brees does, Tom Brady, Tony Romo among others. Vick needs to realize he isn’t going to make it as an NFL Elite QB. Admit to himself that he needs to work harder and learn. IF Vick was so gifted why did Dan Reeves bring Steve Young to help him out after his first season? Watch game films, study and learn the playbook, don’t make excuses just do your job and be a leader not a bust.
When the city and Atlanta Falcons fans realize this only will they start to win.
A franchise player wins not just collects a pay check. The NFL is about Superbowls not 7 wins a year. The Falcon organization was stupid to make Vick the franchise player or should I say bust in the NFL. Brees, Brady, Manning those are marque franchise players who win more than 7 games a year. He doesn’t have it and he never will so don’t make excuses for him he is laughing all the way to the bank with Falcon fans money.

His numbers suck and he won’t win under a new system no one ever has. AS for Drew Brees they didn’t want him in SD and he wasn’t a first round pick but now he schooled ATL this year on winning and looks worth every penny. Vick well he is laughing all the way to the bank and he doesn’t have the expectations of VY, Drew Brees or a winning QB to win game in order to get paid.
Vick didn’t do anything in college ball but left early and was hailed the new QB. They were wrong and Vince Young has proven them Vick doesn’t have the understanding of an NFL QB. Remember VY won 8 games and Michael Vick hasn’t won more than 7 games a year so don’t talk about that one just the facts. Vick sucks as a QB and now he is paid so much BIG MISTAKE no one will take him.
