When team quits, coach must go

Terence Moore

Flowery Branch — He had to go, and for so many reasons. We needn’t go further than that self-inflicted dagger through the heart of Jim Mora’s coaching career with the Falcons. In case you missed the bloody truth in the aftermath of his firing on Monday, his players just quit on him for the second straight year.

To have your players vanish through indifference once is bad enough. Twice, and you definitely have to go.

This is the same Mora who spent three seasons chest-bumping and overly praising everybody in his locker room when he wasn’t snorting ammonia caps with all of them on the sideline. It was enough to make his players often speak of how they loved the guy. Well, they loved the guy so much that they quit on him against Carolina to seal last season’s underwhelming finish, and then they quit on him Sunday in Philadelphia against a bunch of folks at the end of the Eagles’ bench.

So here’s my advice to Falcons owner Arthur Blank and franchise guru Rich McKay during their search for a new head coach: Stay away from “player coaches” because they eventually get assassinated by their players. Falcons players had good reason to do so in this case.

In contrast to that Carolina fiasco, when Falcons quarterback Michael Vick even admitted to yawning through it all, Mora’s players quit on him to end this season because he quit on them with three games left to play. That’s when Mora shamelessly campaigned for the University of Washington job when his players were scrambling down the stretch in search of the playoffs. Not a good way to win friends and influence people who have the power to save your job.

Despite what Falcons players might say, they wanted Mora gone, and you could tell by their listless play, not only against the Eagles, but against the pitiful likes of Detroit and Cleveland and the depleted likes of Carolina. Even if the Falcons had done the unlikely by discovering ways to reach the playoffs with a strikingly flawed roster, Mora was a firing waiting to happen.

There was the football stuff, exemplified by the Falcons’ inability to adjust during games (0-17 when entering the fourth quarter behind, baffling offensive schemes, strange personnel decisions). Then there was all of that other stuff.

Way too much of the other stuff.

You know about some of them. They range from Mora slinging his headset in an ugly tantrum after a postgame question that he didn’t like from a Falcons radio announcer, to ripping franchise legends Mike Kenn and Jeff Van Note for being too quote-friendly (at least in Mora’s mind) during their playing careers. As for the rest of Mora’s explosions, well, there were so many of them that it is difficult to separate fact from fiction. Plus, the real ones are too numerous to list in this space.

Translated: He had to go. You also have to consider that Blank is the ultimate czar of image. He likes to boast of bringing the customer-friendly approach that he used during his successful Home Depot days to the Falcons. That said, having a coach who has a habit of being more discussed for his foolishness than for his X’s and O’s isn’t helping you become customer-friendly.

“We’re not going to go through and kind of figure out who shot who and what was said and when it was said,” explained Blank of Mora’s dismissal, and then he quickly added, “This was a very complicated decision for us. It was a variety of factors that came into play. … I simply can’t put a weight on any single one of them. It was a combination of things that kind of brought us to this point.”

A combination of things? That’s the understatement of the year — this one and the previous one.

One coaching note: I hope Joe DeCamilis is re-hired by the next head coach. He’s fired-up and has honed the likes of Tim Dwight and Allen Rossum. (He may need to do it again next year!)

Here’s hoping that Lelie’s shoulder heals and wishing him a Happy New Year, still in Atlanta 2007.

While not related, I’m hoping Mike Singletary will at least get an interview. I gotta believe that much talent and spirit will translate into a charismatic, driven coach who will lead AND use players strengths!

MV7, don’t stop believing. You made so many improvements over the past two years. When everyone else folded, you were still playing your guts out.

Go Falcons!

Good Riddance. Rich McKay should be next, He of the bust draft picks. This guy is as bad as Dannie Reeves(remember Reggie Kelly). For all those who think Schaub is the answer, look at his overall regular season stats. Allen Rossum is not an NFL player, he should be playing for Amsterdam or Toronto. Thankfully, the Falcons only make us live thru 16 games. A Disgusted lifelong fan.

I agree Mora had to go —- that he shot himself in the foot far to often. And, I also agree the team quit on him, which leads me to the question: Who will they play for? As a teacher in a former life, I can tell you that some kids are just not teachable. For whatever reason, some just don’t want to learn and will do whatever they can to keep others from learning and participating in the learning experience. Forgive me, but my observations over the past couple of years leads me to believe that Vick is not teachable —- that he doesn’t want to learn —- that he thinks he knows everything —- that he is untouchable and a disruptive force on the team. I hope he proves me wrong with a new coach. I hope he finds a coach that can motivate him to become more that just a legend in his own mind.

I agree with your assessment. He had to go for the sake of the Falcons. I am glad we have a owner like Blank who will make the best decision for the Falcons. Unlike the Smith’s who did not care about having a winner in Atlanta, Blank has shown that he care about fans and will bring a Super Bowl winner to us.

Falcons draft #10, that is the one good thing to losing that last game. We should get a good one. Couple that #10 with shaub and we could possibly get a top 5 pick!

Coach Killa Ron Mexico who flips off the fans must go as well. He is a “Team Quitta”, the most overpaid boondoggle whom NFL defenses have figured out! Mora blew it, but so does Blank by keeping with this expensive “experiment.”

I would take Dan Reeves back in a second.

Vick could go back to his old offense…which was more succesful in the first place. AND this alone would eliminate new terminology for MV7.

ANYONE else who is brought in has to teach Vick a new offense and that won’t produce overnight.

Mr. Blank, I know it would be more than difficult to admit you were at fault 4 years ago, but Dan Reeves is and was a damn good football coach.

Suck it up and make the hire.

Great players want to be coached, that’s why I believe Vick’s best years were under Reeves, because he actually taught him how to be a leader. That is something Mora had no idea how to do, which is where the problems began. That being said, I do believe that Vick (and the Falcons) need a coach that is able to teach ethics and commands immediate respect. That man is Mike Singletary. He has a well known pedigree for winning and the team will listen to him because he won’t be concerned about making friends but teaching Vick how to be a leader.

The greater question remains is what does this team do on offense. Obviously Dunn won’t be coming back (same with Leile now that Vick’s favorite target Finneran will be healthy) so they will need to bring in an OC who will allow Vick to AUDIBLE as well as spread the field. This team can be a balanced offense when given the opportunity to do so.

Now Arthur & Rich need to look at all the dead weight on the team and clean out lockers accordingly. If you’re going to make race a constant issue; while trying to build a winner of the falcons; this team is dead in the water. Talent at every position must be reviewed thouroughly and previous dumb personnel/financial offers to players who haven’t produced have to be revisited! WE WANT CLASS ACT WINNERS PLAYING FOR THE ATLANTA FALCONS, NOT A BUNCH OF EGOTISTICAL,PHOTO OP BLOW HARDS.

Mr. Ed and Knappy have to go to. I think it was more there lack of preparation and creativity that led to the downfall of the Falcons. Bring in someone who can use guys like Vick, Norwood, Crumpler, 3 1st round WR’s and please get an offensive line that can pass block. Our defensive shemes were horrible. We made every 3rd string QB look like a pro bowler. Bye- Bye 49’ers

NORM CHOW IS THE ANSWER

He tailors his offenses to the strengths of his talent. He did it at USC with QB Matt Leinart and then did it again with the Titans and a completely different style of QB in Vince Young. Michael Vick could really prosper with Chow as well.

But the Falcons better act quickly, because the Cardinals will be looking at Chow - to reunite him with Leinart.

Terrance, do you have the balls to continue to tell it like it is? Such as : 1) Vick is NOT a leader nor a successful NFL QB. He is a great athlete and could be an asset at RB, PR, and KR, but not at QB; 2) that tough guys hit hard but do not need to incur penalties to show their toughness; 3) that Art Blank got taken as an football owner by putting all his eggs into one basket (Vick)thus showing he knows nothing about football and was duped into believing sports are just like any business.

TO la:

The Falcons are a GA/ALA team not just black ATL. The problem isn’t black Vick vs white Schaub, its the no leader Vick vs any other QB including D.J. who already has more leadership skills than Vick. I haven’t heard one black teammate of Vick come to his defense or say anything resembling like they respect him. They all seem very quiet about his leadership.

To Realist: The first part of your argument is true due to the market and advertising. But you fail to state that players have not disputed Vick on his leadership. In any argument, present both sides. If you don’t like Vick, you just won’t be open minded about his stats. I have compared his stats with others….and perception really is reality. i loved mora. i just wish we could have gotten him on his second leg not his first. i just dont think he was ready to be a head coach. he will do a great job his second time around especailly if he gets rid of his best friend and offensive nap creator. wish list. 1.defensive minded head coach with an assistant smart enough to make adjustments at halftime.maybe a guy smart enough to coach from the both and evaluate the game instead of watching the game from the side line and then just calling out a play 2.run pulling guard. we missed alot when we lost forney and lerr. 3.safey with speed. a deion grant clone would make my day. 4. kick/punt returner. rossum hasnt done his job in a couple years. we lost a lot of momentum with his fair catching inside the 5 and his letting the ball drop at the 35 and rolling into the 5 plus his fair catching when no one is around.

If Blank and Co. are looking for a long-term leader, then Norm Chow may not be the answer. I believe he’s 60, but I agree, he’s pliable enough to work with the talent handed to him (unlike control freak, no-audiblizing-allowed Greg Knapp) As for other candidates:

*Ken Whisenhunt - GA Tech grad, obviously intelligent, but he’s only been an OC for three years and he learned under the tutelage of Mike Mularkey.

*Mike Mularkey - I believe he left Buffalo because he didn’t want to work for the cheapskate Wilsons and that dying franchise anymore (once Ralph reaches room temperature, his scions will sell the frachise and it will move to L.A.). Anyway, he made Tommy Maddox into a successful QB for a couple of years, but then again, he couldn’t do anything for Joey Harrington in Miami (where he was OC this year).

*Cam Cameron - Finally was allowed to free the shackles of Martyball and showed creativity and tact in his play calling. SD will win the Super Bowl (what a daring proclamation).

*Bobby Petrino - It’s easy to look like a genius when you’re up against Big East competition. I’m not convinced he’s the answer.

*Kirk Ferentz - a media darling for some reason. He’s like the “cool kid” everyone loves “just because”. I know it’s difficult having to recruit for Iowa, but he hasn’t achieved much. Besides, I saw a game in 2005 in which Iowa was up 17 against Northwestern with 5 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and Iowa ended up losing.

*Bob Stoops - Okay, so he’s won with the best recruits in the country. Big whoop. Oklahoma manages to blow at least one easily winnable game a year since their National Championship.

*Steve Mariucci - I swear, there will be rioting if this lame-as-Hades coach is hired. The Lions quit on him last year! There’s a reason why.

Everyone must keep in mind the last time the Falcons hired the hottest OC in the country, one that called the plays for one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history, his name was Dan Henning and we all know how that turned out.

Terence, you emphasize the off-the-field stuff because that’s what makes headlines, but really the “football stuff” was Mora’s biggest problem. Greater coaches than Mora, in this sport and others, have made stupid remarks to the media and have had off the field incidents but as long as they were coaching they did a great job. Mora’s biggest problem, more than radio interviews or big-mouth dads, was his inability to find a good scheme on either side of the ball and his loyalty to his awful coordinators. Yeah, it would be nice if the next coach had a cattle prod in his hands, but more importantly I hope the next coach can call plays properly and draw up effective schemes.

I’m not a Falcons fan, but I do have a few thoughts for you:

  1. I’m not going to say that Mora was a good coach, but who is he getting replaced with? I can’t think of a single coordinator or college coach that is going to make the jump to the Falcons.

  2. Let’s assume for a second that the players quit on the coach because they wanted him gone. Anyone who is a season ticket holder should be asking Mr. Blank for their money back. Players are paid over a hundred million dollars to play a game, and that money is from the fans. If you have players that aren’t earning their 100 million dollar contract (I’m talking to you Mr. Vick) because they don’t like their boss, then you need to get new players.

  3. A new coach is not going to solve most of the Falcon’s problems. I don’t think any coach can catch a ball for the receivers or block a rusher for the lineman or throw a decent pass for the quarterback. Getting rid of Mora might be a start, but it definately is not the finish.

By The terrible truth

Just wait till the new staff tries to pour a gallon of knowledge into Vick’s shotglass of a brain. Teams know everything that he knows and his tendencies. They stop the execution of what he knows, they win the game, simple as that. He couldn’t audible at a Taco Bell drive-thru and still can’t accurately and properly deliver a forward pass. His natural talent has taken him as far as he wants to go. He has shown no inclination to get better in the offseason and apparently the brass from Daddy WarBlank on down is afraid to confront him. If he can avoid these lawsuits for passing on an incurable virus and sidesteps aquiring an expensive drug habit, he has enough money to last the rest of his life. He is no better quarterback or teammate for that matter than he was four-five years ago. Psycho Jim was a tumor that had to be removed, it’s time to chemo the growth behind the center too.

I hope the next coach will maintain a proper set of priorities.

  1. He Works for the TEAM.
  2. The TEAM comes first.
  3. Everyone, players included, are resources to be applied to best benefit the TEAM. Salaries, bonuses, “tenure” does not matter. Performance RIGHT NOW matters.

Let’s hope the next coach insists on an Oline philosophy like the “Big Boys” Blank admires for their consistency: Philly, and Pittsburgh. There are high draft choices on those lines and they continually re-stock them as a matter of course through the draft. And they are BIG, not little. That’s why they can win late in the seasons. Small nicked up guys get beaten by big nicked up men.

Finally, let’s make sure the offense is a legitimate Pro offense:

  1. ALLOW AUDIBLES
  2. Some double moves for a change
  3. Dumps to backs and 20 yard passes
  4. Legitimate size feature back — no more soft-running munchkins.

We don’t need gimmicks, or liabilities deliberately put in place to make it impossible for anyone but the fastest QB to WIN. Pass protect. PHYSICAL RB. PHYSICAL OLine.

Build an offense where we can plug any competent QB in and WIN some games. Then put Vick in that situation and let those unique talents put the team over the top.

Vick ran for more first downs (54 first down runs in 123 carries) than Dunn (48 in 286 carries). As a reference, Norwood had 27 in 99 carries. Tiki Barber - 78 on 327 carries)

or, put another way, the average number of carries per first down generated:

Vick: 2.3 (unreal) Norwood: 3.7 (very good) Tiki: 4.2 (good) Dunn: 6.0 (“unacceptable”) Tomlinson: 4.3 Larry Johnson: 4.6

We won’t win consistently until we put the same thing around our QB (whoever he is) that other consistent winners put around theirs. No QB can win a championship with this current OLine, soft running starting RB, and butter-fingerd WRs.

I hope the next coach focuses on making those improvements.

Though I hate to see anybody lose his job, Mora brought it on himself. He is the one who hired Knapp and Donatell and they have proven that they don’t know what the hell they are doing. Knapp was so hell bent on sticking Vick in a west coast offense that he still doesn’t know to this day that it was a mistake. A good oc installs an offense that plays to his players strengths. You don’t just go with your offense because it’s your offense. And for God’s sake please let your qb’s audible out of bad plays!!! Donatell; 300+ passing yards to the 3rd string qb pretty much says it all.

My wish-list:

  1. Get some coaches in here who will evaluate the talent on this team and devise schemes that take advantage of those talents.

  2. Finneran to come back 100% and ready to catch those balls that our current crop of receivers seem to have so difficult a time with.

  3. Big mean nasty o-linemen that have a taste for blood and will protect the qb with their lives.

  4. Get some real value for Schaub(u think the Raiders might be interested?)and not trade him just to trade him. Also bring in a cheap veteran backup for Vick to pick up a few pointers from and who can step in and get a W if need be.

  5. D-linemen who are good for more than 3- 5 games a season.

  6. Steve Young as a qb coach(extremely wishful thinking).

I’ve said all along that a lack of accountability is what’s hurting the Falcons most. Everyone on the team has it made in the shade and they know it: Big paychecks for little effort. Maybe I’m old fashioned but I thought pay is usually commensurate with labor performed? It was a given that Jim Mora had to go, and I was saddened to hear that Knapp has somehow survived a purging, even temporarily. He has no useful purpose with the Falcons. As far as Michael Vick, I agree that he is talented but he has certainly been an underachiever. Hopefully, a good coach can change that sad fact, otherwise next year we’ll be dealing with this issue again.

By GeneDawg

I think Greg Knapp didn’t allow Audibles b/c Vick COULDN’T Aubible..it takes an intellient QB like Manning (who calls many of his own plays w/o and OC) to run an offense. I don’t like Knapp but, bless his heart, he was working with a pea-brained QB who never understood the playbook. He was a good college QB but I think Shockley could understand an offense and read a defense better than Vick. As far as a new coach…I bet somebody like Mike Price might suit the Thuggish persona of this team.

By Nobody U Know

January 1, 2007 10:52 PM | Link to this

It is obvious Mike Vick can’t be just a quarterback. That would be too easy. He has to be a “black” quarterback and carry all the preconceived notions that the bigots in this country place on his mental abilities. Those people who hate any man of his color just because of the money he makes. They will find fault no matter what. It reminds me of another guy who played this position in the NFL. He was criticised too because of his passing ability. They say he threw the ball without touch. He throws too hard. Even though he made his team a consistent winner, he was never compensated in terms of the white quarterbacks in the league and finally the bigots had their way and he was out of the NFL. Until Joe Gibbs picked him up and Doug WIlliams took the Washington Redskins to the Super Bowl as the underdog team. And while they were putting the Denver Broncos’ John Elway on the Wheaties box Mr. WIlliams was kicking the Broncos out of the game. So send Mike Vick somewhere else. Maybe someone like Joe Gibbs who can see past the black, will look at him as a quarterback…just a quarterback… Someone who wants only to win will let folks see just how good he really is. He should never bring a championship to people who will only find ways to justify their predjudices.

These are the facts as of 25 Dec 2006.

The formula works if the Falcons take an early lead, but the team is 0-15 under Mora when Atlanta trails entering the fourth quarter.

Vick, meanwhile, has lost the edge he had from 2002-04, when he seemed capable of nearly taking over games at will. He finished 9-for-20 against Carolina for 109 yards, two interceptions and a 22.7 passer rating that’s the third worst of his career.

Entering Week 16, Vick had a fourth-quarter rating (59.4 percent) that ranked 34th in a 32-team league. His receivers were 31st in yards after the catch and 13th in drops.

Michael Vick the 60 million dollar bust and coach killer who can’t understand an NFL West Coast Offense or read an NFL defense.

When the rest of Atlanta Losers I mean Falcons. These are the facts face it. Get over it and get a new QB 6 years 60 million dollars later and no more than 8 wins. I know you are loyal to Vick but reality sucks and so does staying home another year. On his first carry, Vick rushed for 17 yards to become the first NFL quarterback to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. Andersen gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead with a 40-yard field goal in the first quarter that moved him past Gary Anderson for the all-time lead. Andersen now has 539 career field goals.

Vick had four carries for 32 yards and completed 9 of 20 passes for 109 yards with two interceptions.

That makes any team a winner two INT’s and 9 of 20. A great NFL QB the Falcons should win it all every year.

Brees, who came into the day with more than 4,000 yards passing and 25 TDs, finished 13-of-32 for 132 yards on a day his receivers dropped at least eight passes.

— If Vince Young keeps this up, the Tennessee Titans just might do the unthinkable and make the playoffs.

The rookie first-round draft pick has the Tennessee Titans (8-7), who started the season with five straight losses, alive in the AFC playoff race entering the final weekend after rallying them to a 30-29 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

The doubters have motivated Young all season long.

Young threw two touchdown passes and rushed for another to engineer his fourth comeback in the fourth quarter or overtime. This time, he helped Tennessee overcome a 29-20 deficit in the final 12 minutes. After hitting Brandon Jones for a 29-yard touchdown pass, Young engineered a 14-play, 75-yard drive, which Rob Bironas capped with a 30-yard field goal with 2:10 left.

Young’s most electrifying play came at the end of the first half, when he scored on a 36-yard keeper on a fourth-and-2.

Tennessee Passing C/ATT YDS TD INT Young 13/20 183 2 0

Tom Brady directed three long touchdown drives, capped one of them with a perfect touch pass to David Thomas, and helped the Patriots clinch their fourth consecutive AFC East crown with a 24-21 victory against the Jaguars on a rainy Sunday. Brady was brilliant in both games at Alltel Stadium.

He was 23-of-33 for 236 yards and two touchdowns in the Super Bowl victory against Philadelphia. He was even better against the Jaguars (8-7).

He finished 28-of-39 for 249 yards and a touchdown, completing passes to 10 receivers and picking apart the NFL’s second-ranked defense mostly with short and quick throws. He also ran 10 times for 31 yards, getting several first downs on sneaks and scrambling for yards to avoid sacks.

“He’s a great leader,” offensive tackle Matt Light said. “He went out there and did what he always does. Whenever we needed a big play he’s always out there making them.”

Atlanta Passing C/ATT YDS TD INT Vick 9/20 109 0 2 Vick had four carries for 32 yards and completed 9 of 20 passes for 109 yards with two interceptions.

Vick Coach Killer and 60 million dollar bust.

The Falcons (7-8) suffered their fourth-straight home loss.

Vick doesn’t inspire his team to win when he blames them and doesn’t look at himself. Look at Arizona, Leinart he wins and he is a rookie, Tony Romo wins, Drew Brees inspired a city and he swept the Falcons. . It’s about dollars and earing what you are paid. Simple economics. How many people would live in a 60 million dollar house and the roof leaks 50% of the time, or drive a car that works 4 days out of the week. You wouldn’t keep an employee who worked or produced 50% of the time so why allow Vick. Leader he doesn’t inspire the Falcons to win Drew Brees does, Tom Brady, Tony Romo among others. Vick needs to realize he isn’t going to make it as an NFL Elite QB. Admit to himself that he needs to work harder and learn. IF Vick was so gifted why did Dan Reeves bring Steve Young to help him out after his first season? Watch game films, study and learn the playbook, don’t make excuses just do your job and be a leader not a bust.

When the city and Atlanta Falcons fans realize this only will they start to win.

A franchise player wins not just collects a pay check. The NFL is about Superbowls not 7 wins a year. The Falcon organization was stupid to make Vick the franchise player or should I say bust in the NFL. Brees, Brady, Manning those are marque franchise players who win more than 7 games a year. He doesn’t have it and he never will so don’t make excuses for him he is laughing all the way to the bank with Falcon fans money.

Vick well he is laughing all the way to the bank and he doesn’t have the expectations of VY, Drew Brees or a winning QB to win game in order to get paid.

Vick didn’t do anything in college ball but left early and was hailed the new QB. They were wrong and Vince Young has proven them Vick doesn’t have the understanding of an NFL QB. Remember VY won 8 games and Michael Vick hasn’t won more than 7 games a year so don’t talk about that one just the facts.

Look at Vick’s numbers against other QB’s who win.

Vick coach killer

Mike Vick the David Carr of the NFC.

and the rest of the LOSER Falcon fans. Why do you insist on keeping Vick as QB? He isn’t winning for the money he is making and Vince Young is better than Vick. Vince Young no team 41 million under the cap no talent and inspires his team to win Vick blames his team. Michael Vick wants to always run this is the NFL not CFL or Europe NFL he is a QB a passing QB. Vince Young with Norm Chow has learn how to pass and when to run and now Vick is being compared to Vince Young. Remember Vick has had 5 years of experience on Vince Young but it doesn’t show in his leadership blames everyone for bad games. And his I love the fans with the finger so he must go. His numbers suck and he won’t win under a new system no one ever has. He didn’t win with Mora’s WEST COAST OFFENSE and it had to be simplified for him imagine brining in someone who’s playbook is complicated. Vick would be reading NFL Offense for dummies. AS for Drew Brees they didn’t want him in SD and he wasn’t a first round pick but now he schooled ATL this year on winning and looks worth every penny.

Vick sucks as a QB and now he is paid so much BIG MISTAKE no one will take him. Not even the Houston Texans so he is a liability and gets a new coach same results next year and I will be the first to tell everyone in GA.

Although Norm Chow is older and might only coach 5-8 more years, that’s still the probable extent of Michael Vick’s pro career. Vick is our $100 million dollar man and no one else is better-suited to coach him than Norm Chow.

I bet while DJ Shockley stayed home and broke down film, the starting quarterback was trying to decide what color do-rag he was gonna wear to impress his posse. Unlike Vick, Doug Williams finally grew up and started to listen to those who knew more than he did and used it along with his God given talent to its fullest potential. So did Mr. Full-of-Himself Elway later in his career. Michael Vick has made himself a few bucks but Doug Williams made himself successful. Doug Williams is now molding men. It looks like all Michael Vick is capable of doing is hanging out with them. Doug Williams changed when he was around Vick’s age. I don’t think Vick has the same character and frankly, to mention them both in the same context is an abhorrant insult to Doug Williams.

someone just said, where’s jamal anderson when we need him? EXACTLY! almost every single problem with the Falcons this year has been caused by the lack of a Jamal Anderson type of player for the Falcons. Failures in the red zone, short yardage, third down, fourth down have crippled this team because we do not have a big back like jamal anderson. also, 4th quarter failures are caused because we do not have a big back like jamal to take us home when we need him to take us home. Go get us another Jamal Anderson and see how much different this team looks and how much more we win. We lost Duckett this year and he was not great but he also averaged 8 touchdowns a year in the red zone and countless short yardage conversions and we never replaced that.

Imagine how much more effective vick and dunn and norwood and the receivers would be on the outside and down the field if the opponents had to be scared to death about a big back killing them up the middle.

someone up there tried to make the point about schaub getting us to the red zone. but what happened with schaub in the red zone. nothing happened just like not a whole lot happens in the red zone when vick gets down there. Why? Is is Schaub’s fault or Vick’s fault? No! Part of it was poor play calling. BUT a big part of it was that we do not have a Jamal to pound for us and take us home.

We are going to have a pretty high pick this year. Adrian Peterson has a little baggage right now so he may slip down to us or we may be able to trade up a few spots for him. If we had the 10th pick and we needed to get up to the sixth pick to get Peterson, would you trade Schaub and the 10th pick for that sixth pick to get Peterson and also for a second rounder and a third round pick. I would.

Most of these offensive problems plaguing this team can be fixed with Adrian Peterson. DJ will be a good second string backup next year and we will get much more utility out of peterson than we will out of Schaub sitting on the bench.

DRAFT ADRIAN PETERSON!

ALL THE INEPTITUDE ON THIRD DOWN, FOURTH DOWN, RED ZONE, SHORT YARDAGE, AND 4TH QUARTER WILL GO AWAY AS A RESULT. WE WILL BE BETTER ABLE TO WIN THE TIME OF POSSESSION WAR, THEREBY HELPING OUT OUR DEFENSE BY PROVIDING THEM LESS EXPOSURE TO OFFENSIVE ATTACKS OF THE OTHER TEAMS.

POUNDING PETERSON SUCKS THE DEFENSES INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD AND UP TO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE AND WILL THEREBY OPEN EVERYTHING UP ON THE EDGES FOR VICK AND NORWOOD NEXT YEAR, DOWNFIELD FOR THE RECEIVERS, AND WILL MAKE SCREENS AND PLAY ACTION FAKES AND CHUCK IT DEEP PLAYS THAT MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE.

DRAFT ADRIAN PETERSON.

PETERSON WILL MAKE THE VICK, NORWOOD, ALGE, AND THE MUCH MALIGNED OFFENSIVE LINE AND WIDE RECEIVERS ALL THAT MUCH BETTER.

A BIG BACK IS THE MISSING INGREDIENT.

A GOOD PLAY CALLER IS AS WELL.

DRAFT ADRIAN PETERSON!!!

trade the 10th pick and schaub plus a fifth round pick for the #1 pick overall and Randy Moss.

then trade the #1 pick to the bucaneers for the bucs 4th pick and a second round pick and a fifth round pick.

if adrian peterson though is still going to be around by the seventh pick, then you do not make the trade with the bucs.

you then trade the #1 pick to the vikings for their seventh pick and a second rounder this year and a second rounder next year and a fifth rounder this year.

You then use either the fourth pick or the seventh pick to draft adrian peterson depending upon his draft board status to cure all of the short yardage, 4th down, 3rd down, red zone, and fourth quarter woes.

Listen,

Before we go about talking about personnel changes, we first need a head coach. Personally, I thought that Mora wouldn’t be fired. Plus, I do not think it’s a good deal… unless there’s an upgrade that has been talking to the Falcons.

Like Bill Cowher.

But, if not, I would have to disagree with this decision. I think the coordinators would be gone, but not Mora.

Oh well…

As far as a new Head Coach is concerned, I do not want a coordinator at head coach. I need a CEO at Head Coach. I need someone with a lot of experience that would be more father figure than anything. Like a Dick Vermeil. Or Jimmy Johnson. Or a Bill Walsh. Someone that can come back and just play CEO and leave the coordination to the coordinators.

Now some people may say that Dick Vermeil said this about Mike Vick, or that Jimmy Johnson said that about Mike Vick. None of those coaches would probably be so in love with Vick’s game that they would see it as a perk. And that’s a good thing.

I kind of want a coach to come in here who don’t think too highly of Vick’s game. I would like to see a coach get in Vick’s face ONCE in his professional career! Vick is congratulated furiously when he makes great plays, but is not even put to task when he misreads or throws errant passes. Now Jimmy Johnson, for one, would be in Vick’s face and hold him accountable for his mistakes.

Oh, and I want a coach with a Super Bowl ring. I would love to have a coach that would wear his ring on the first day of practice. Or when he is balling out a star, point his finger in that player’s face with one of the fattest, glossiest rings that have “Super Bowl Champions” in it. Instant Respect!

In other words, I do not want to experiment next year. I want a proven system with a coach that has a certain disdain for Vick that will drive him to perfection.

I want a coach that good coordinators would LOVE to work with.

And if I had to pick a coordinator to be the head coach, I would take a veteran with some toughness and heart… perhaps Monte Kiffen.

But this is Atlanta. Why do we need a coordinator to take over this job. Blank should just write the check and get us a Tony Dungy, Bill Cowher, or a Jimmy Johnson.

Good mornin’ all, & Happy 007. Time for most of us to be up and heading back to work. Since I usually just read these things for the “content”, I refrain from commenting-usuallt. The brown I’m referring to emits a certain fragrance, an unmistakable odor, if you will, that reminds me of the Falcons and Mike Vick in particular. They all ought to be gelded, and judging by the way they play, I think most of ‘em have been already. These jokers don’t deserve any slack; they are just like flies-buzz around, eat $#!+, and bother people! AS long as Vick is Quarterback this team will never achieve much. He can run but he is NOT A GOOD PASSER which is what is needed from a quarterback. Other players get paid to run the ball. If Vick was white and played this bad he would have been gone along time ago. Vick puts blacks in the seats and sells tickets he does not win games.

I sit in Section 304 week after week and marvel at how stupid the Falcons defensive players look when they constantly flap their arms in the air as they implore those of us who want to see a Bears-type of defense to scream at the top of our lungs (at though that will actually help these defensive players to stop anyone from completing a pass against them). Ironic, isn’t it, that whoever coaches the Falcons defensive team would actually allow this kind of stupid behavior to continue……it is no wonder that by the 4th quarter, the defensive players are weary. My arms would be weary also if I spent the entire day flapping them at the fans. I suppose you are correct, Terence, about Mora having to go. But I pity the fool who comes in and thinks he can coach Ron Mexico to be a quarterback and actually run the offense and provide leadership at the same time. The Falcons, with all of their eggs in the Ron Mexico basket, are doomed for mediocrity for the indefinite future. Going to the Dome and putting up with the smoke from visiting fans’ cigarettes as well as their drunkenness will become a thing of the past for me unless Arthur (can I call him that?) trades Ron Mexico to the Raiders for Art Shell (a REAL man’s man!!).

COACH KILLER - MICHAEL VICK IS TO BLAME. Vick is so unpredictable to his own receivers, and his own offensive line - meaning where is he going to be, where is he going to throw from, how frequently is he going to run after giving up on his receivers?? Vick Played like a running back in the Quarterback position, whose passing efficiency sucks because his receivers can’t connect with him (Unlike his back-up). It was apparent that Mora played Vick to his strengths, and despire this, it did not work. Why? Because this is a team game and when Vick is in, it is all about Vick, and not the rest of the team. Mora was really a likeable guy. He is capable of success. In a way, I’d rather see Vick go than Mora and let Mora coach a traditional QB like Schaub.

After reading all of the above comments, I guess the Falcons are a lot worse than I thought they were.

They do seem pretty thin, though, for that $100 million payroll.

As for their ineptitude late in games, maybe there’s a conditioning problem.

As for Vick, he clearly doesn’t inspire his teammates the way he did a few years ago. At one time he looked (and performed) like a guy who could carry his team on his shoulders when it needed carrying, but not anymore. What happened? Is it the offensive scheme? The offensive line? The big contract? All good questions.

In my opnion he is too quick to look for a flag after getting hit. The opposing teams sense that and use it to their advantage.

As for Shaub, he looked OK. But according to the announcers he’s going to be starting for another NFL team next year. I’ll believe that when I see it.

Although warranted, the firing of the coach is only a small, easy initial step to recovery. Unfortunately, hiring a first-rank coach will be all but impossible given the Falcon’s meddlesome owner and his anointed “quarterback”. Arthur Blank has created problems that will at best take a few years to rectify, mainly because of the insane amount of money he has spent on Michael “The Emperor’s New Clothes” Vick. His lax, playground style of football (and in turn his ineffectiveness) can hardly be tolerated much longer - except by MV7 hypsters & cultists.

And for his own good, get rid of Matt Schaub too - he does not belong in this pathological organization. In arguably the Falcon’s biggest contribution ever to the NFL, they launched a Hall of Fame career when they traded away Bret Fauvre. Conceivably, Schaub might also develop into an actual first-rate NFL quarterback - something beyond the realm of reasonable expectation in the case of Vick.

Schaub will NEVER be the QB for the Falcons. All of your wishful thinking and senseless prognostication will not make it so. Mora was fired after his comments about the Washington Coaching job. What owner could endure such stupid comments???? Any chance at all of him remaining the coach went out the window with those comments. Mora’s mea culpa and his father’s foot in mouth disease doomed him. I think he knew exactly what he was doing. He knew that he could not delay the inevitable. We will know within the next few weeks who will take over the helm for the birds. Until then, it’s all supposition and what ifs. Unfortunately, this will continue to be a forum about Vick, his salary, his life style and Atlanta, the city to busy hating….the QB. Insane!

Terence, thanks for another good column. I thought Mora was the wrong choice three years ago. And I still don’t know what a consensus-building coach is on the football field. Were Halas and Lombardi consensus-building coaches? One more thing, all this blather about Vick or Schaub is tiresome. I think DJ is the way to go. With the proper coaching, he will develop into one hell of a fine QB. He may not set a bunch of records, but he can lead and will take teams well into the post season. That is just a hunch that I’ve had for a long time. I think he’s the real future at QB either at Etlanna or most likely elsewhere.

Quick question? Who had more yards passing in ‘06, Vick or one of the following: J.P. Losman BUF? Tony Romo DAL? Brad Johnson MIN? HINT: NOT VICK, the highest paid player in the league. In fact, Vick is #22 on the list. But, I guess we have to keep him ‘cause he’s black.

The Falcons brought the new year in right by getting rid of Mora. Now we need to trade Schaub, Hartwell, and Roddy “the fluker, no hands” White(sp)to the Raiders or the Lions who both need a qb for their pick and draft Atl’s own Calvin Johnson. He is a true Baller on the field who can go up there and catch the ball and make plays after the catch. Rossum no longer needs to be in the game at cb. He sucks!!! He is too little and can’t cover anyone and causes a lot of penalties. Hartwell is terrible. He Jumps on piles and acts like he did something after someone else made a tackle. Crocker was a bust this season. He looked like “No play Ray Buchannan” playing safety. Jimmy needs to start and when Webster comes back he can play Nickel Back. Vick is still the man and I would not want any other qb on our time, but needs to do more than just sit on the sideline after an offensive drive. He needs to talk to his team and prepare for the next drive. Be the leader Vick. Well at least Knapp will be gone I hope. Whoever we get to coach, I hope the come in running things and will not tolerate any BS!!!! I’m still sticking with the home team. Falcons lets get our $hit together!!!!!

When the blacks in Atlanta start looking at stats rather than resort to race, maybe we will compete. Objectively, there is no statistical reason to keep hanging on to this thug. Trade him for talent and use a QB to play QB. And stop pushing the black agenda to get airports named after criminals!

The 2006 Falcons were not the best by far, but at the same time they were not the worst. I’ve been in Atlanta for 30 years. Instead of joining in on all the bickering and name calling, I want to applaud the Falcons bringing back Morten Andersen,an eight-time Pro Bowler who has played the most NFL games of any player with 354. Each time Mort kicks a ball through the uprights he breaks an NFL record - his own. Thanks Mort for coming back to the Falcons. One player that sure needs to continue to play for the Falcons = Mort

Let the games begin… While we pick over the corpse of yet another Falcons season gone awry and show the road to Mora, what can be done to set this frustrating franchise straight? Change, change, blah, blah, change!!! Maybe Tommy Nobis should come down from the boardroom and coach the team, or Rich McKay can play Isiah Thomas, eh? If Mr. Blank wants a goal, how about spare us the talk of a Championship when all we really want is respect? Let’s hire a coach to end the four decade long streak of no back-to-back winning seasons… I believe Chow is the man for the job, but any truly seasoned coach (not coordinator) will do..

No proven head coach is going to come here and play fourth-string behind Blank, McKay, and Vick (not necessarily in that order) unless he is another “consensus guy”, in case he probably isn’t a proven head coach in the first place. Not to mention, Vick does have a 2-0 record when it comes to deposing head coaches. You might have to put up with a meddlesome owner, but being told to kiss-up to the “Franchise” is too much to ask of any self-respecting coach with real balls.

No, we’ll get some retread who knows enough of the right things to say to Blank in order to get hired and who will weenie around with Vick until the latter gets bored with him and whines to Daddy Warbucks or a new pet.

And tell us, all you people calling for his return, why would Dan Reeves would want to step back into this quagmire?

Nice article Terence. Nice to see you can write in color and not always white and black. You are still a racist that inflames this city but we are stuck with you until the paper has the nerve to fire you.

Mora was way over his head as HC and Arthur has to blame himself for the hiring. White or black, a veteran coach and new staff is needed. There are many reasons this organization is still a joke, but I agree that Ron Mexico is a coach killer. Race aside, this kid is a thug like his brother and even Dan Reeves had to use crayons and coloring books to lay out a playbook.

The Eagles and other class organizations show that you overcome injuries to win and even score points in the meantime.

Maybe Arthur will learn by watching how a 3rd string veteran QB outperformed his Ron Mexico as we have seen over and over for 6 years.

This team needs leadership and a new direction, not thugs, show boaters, college coaching, cut blocking, and the dirty bird crap

Describing Jim Mora as “foolish” is right on the money. I have a 14 year old son that puts more thought into his behavior and what he’s about to say than Mora apparently has the ability to do. There’s a perfectly good adjective that exists to describe Mora that will save sports writers, and virtually everyone else, a whole lot of time……idiot.

Some people have asked why Kirk Ferentz of Iowa is on the potential coaches list. Well, he has extensive pro experience for one thing. He was ASSISTANT HEAD COACH AT BALITMORE. AND ALSO COACHED THE OFFENSIVE LINE! And he’s been successful at Iowa for eight years. He’s also known as an outstanding teacher, with the ability to “coach up” his teams. He’s straightforward and solid. Do an internet search and read his bio. IMPRESSIVE!

Excuse me, but when the team quits, the team must go, and that includes any self-absorbed quarterbacks who style themselves as “Superman”. If getting paid $140 million isn’t enough to inspire you to in turn inspire your team and lead them to victory over any obstacle - including poor coaching - then what is? Well, try pride, self-respect, and a sense of responsibility to your ever dwindling fan base for starters.

Artie is supposed to be a savvy businessman. Businessmen are always using sports analogies, “working as a team” and “being a team player” being two of the most overused. How ironic that Mr. Savvy Businessman now owns a sports team and his employees see themselves as anything but that. Disgusting. Fire their self-centered asses.

I don’t know if anybody has ever noticed MV’s inability to concentrate when Knapp tried to go over plays and formations on the bench after an offensive series, but as a retired educator it is pretty obvious that Mike is a classic ADD person. Try some concerta and his ability to concentrate and listen should increase dramatically. Either that or he just doesn’t give a care.

I know that all of you have been waiting to hear from the genius. Well, here is my take on the Jim Mora poofa. Jim Mora is NOT the problem; he does not play on the field and really has little to do with the falcons performance. Fact is: The players are not playing up to their level of compensation. Not too many years ago, professional players for the most part were exactly that, professional. They played with pride and cared about the team; now it is about money, it is about business. QB Vick is a good talent, a very fast runner. But all you have to do is listen to him in a press conference and realize he doesn’t have the aptitude to lead a kid out of a tunnel, much less lead a pro team or read defenses. It is not a knock on Vick, it is just the way it is. He needs to be in the backfield as a runner and that is the way it is. Did you see Schaub yesterday; yes, he had an interception. My goodness, why would that be a surprise when he is stuck in the game on the spur of the moment? He did a masterful job; he is a born leader. But he will most likely be lost to another team for 2007 and we are going to have the same mixed bag mess that we have had the last several years. It won’t make any difference who Blank brings in as coach; it will be the same Mike Vick mess that we have endured in the past. Don’t make it a race issue because that is not the answer; the answer is to get these players up to their potential. The genius has spoken.

As it’s currently constructed, this team is completely out of step with today’s NFL. Look at the recent Super Bowl champions (Steelers, Patriots, Ravens)…they are teams that line up big bodies on both sides of the ball, and play with a demonstrated mean-streak on EVERY PLAY…they don’t take plays/games/seasons off. Ever since the Patriots wiped the field with the ‘Greatest Show on Turf’ Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI, teams have been consistently moving away from smaller lineups to larger ones (including the shift to the 3-4 defense…which of course we moved away from shortly thereafter). But, those teams achieved victory with QB’s who had issues at the time: Big Ben played horribly, Brady was a second-year pro/6th round pick who came off the bench, and Dilfer was…well…Dilfer, so it can be done. But they can also manage a game, something MV7 clearly needs to work on.

So, where does this leave us? I’m afraid that in the short run not a very good place. First, Vick thus far was been unable to master a couple different offenses, so I’m not confident that the third time will be the charm. Until he can demonstrate the ability to manage a game (it’s not about him but making those around him better), we are doomed to exciting but losing football. Second, we need to get larger up front asap. Third, we need character guys from winning teams/programs (why bring in an Abraham after he clearly quit on his old team…can we really expect better here?).

We are at a crossroads for this franchise, and I’m afraid that if McKay is picking the new guy it’ll just be more of the same. We need a guy committed to the new NFL (or the old snot-nosed football of the past), NOT the 2006 Falcons! And please, NOT Cowher…the most overrated coach in football history! One Super Bowl with all that talent…that’s a bigger tease than Vick!

The next Falcon Coach has a really tough job: convincing Michael Vick to quit playing rugby and start playing American football - you know, where you hand the ball off, throw tight side line passes, and, remember, something that’s totally unheard of in Atlanta, the ancient but venerable screen pass. Why not just sit him down for three months and make him watch nothing but Tom Brady doing all of the above, quite well I might add.

i think that we are set at wide reciever. i have to believe that white finneran and jenkins have to be better with a wide reciever coach that believes that using the quaterback throwing the football to the wide reciever aproach in practice. the new coach should match up our SHOULD SHUT UP all pro corner back one on one with the best wide reciever. he should never put his hands up after being burnt and blame the safety. withe kerney or a great replacement plus a solid defensive end we will be a top ten defense.

  1. The difference in this article and Bradley’s is that Moore correctly says that the Falcons have a “strikingly flawed roster.” I’m sick of hearing about all the “talent” on this team. This is the same talent that couldn’t beat a team playing their second-string.
  2. Yes, Michael Vick is a better QB than Matt Schaub because he has been playing with the first-string offense for six years. MV is a great athlete but I’d rather have a great quarterback. Don’t know if that is Schaub or not-he hasn’t had the chances MV has had.
  3. It’s not Vick’s fault that he makes so much money-I’d take it too. The problem is that one salary is taking money away from getting a good supporting cast.
  4. Mora and company were not the only problems with this team. The offensive line couldn’t block my granny and I think she could burn the secondary. No QB can throw from his behind. We’ll never know how good either of these QB’s can be until we upgrade the OLine.
  5. We need players with heart. I lost confidence in Vick when last year’s Falcons had the chance to become the first team in franchise history to have back-to-back winning season and Vick couldn’t get up for it. I told everybody before Sunday’s game that if it came down to just playing for pride, we could forget it. Sure enough, all we got was another finger and it was almost as blatant.
  6. We need coaches that aren’t afraid to call out the prima donas. Please no more defensive coaches, just make sure you also get a good DC.
  7. PLEASE use the first round pick to get an impact player.

I am not a falcons hater nor a vick basher but the the falcons have got rid of one problem in mora and need to bite the bullet on the contract and get rid of vick. vick is not the answer at qb. he will never i say never bring a title to this town when all he is concerned about is running and gaining 2000 yds. trade him or bulk him up and make a rb. if you trade him do it to the raiders draft quinn let quinn sit for a year and then watch in two-three yrs the falcons will win. Did anyone else notice the receivers were catching passes schaub was throwing but never do when vick throws them. its not the receivers. its vick . how can you justify keeping a player who has admitted to giving up in games. hes not a leader not even close to manning or brady. falcon fans if you want to win a super bowl trade vick and it will happen watch.

Well gang, its is time to fix the team. M. Vick just needs in B. Musgave’s home and pick his brain from now until whenever. The line needs to be torn up. We all have noticed that this team needs to find some solid offensive line in the 1st and 2nd round of the draft for the last five years. This idea this team has when it comes of drafting offensive linemen is similar to getting a formal dress at the local thrift store. Rich McKay better see this team as it is, a team that needs to be rebuilt. We need a good coverage safety, a run stuffing middle linebacker, and a good run pass catching receiver.

This team mindset needs to change. Until you find a coach a.k.a. Dan Reeves whose mindset is to play a physical type of football, you will always been in this situation.

i loved mora. with that said i think his assitance let the team down. we couldnt audible on offense nor could we audible on defense. recievers couldnt make plays with the football. they were hell of blockers though. im not a defensive coordinator, but i bet he took 3 days off when it came to making up a game plan against knapp. every game every series no matter down or distance. 1st down warrick right 2nd down warrick up the middle 3rd down and this is where you had to guess a little bit. either it was run right with warrick bootleg left with vick or one of the ten pass plays in our play book.
if we had rested forney for a couple weeks and lerr hadnt gotten suspended. i think we could have easily won 12 games. its a shame that mora had to be the excape goat, but i just think that we arent that far we have one of the most passionate owners in football. we have one of the most dynamic quaterbacks in football. its unfair to compare him to brady, but he has done as much or more than any quaterback in football over the last 5 years. we have great fair weather fans. when we win we are one of the loudest fans in the football. we have a great run blocking scheme. we just need a stud run blocker and alot better depth on the offensive line to compliment the scheme. dropp. rossum, webster, crocker, brooking, hartwell lelie, morten anderson, and give dunn a lesser role. trade shaub for a draft pic or a nice guard, tackle, defensive end, or speedy safty. promote some of this young talent. add young depth at key positoins where we have age and pass injuries.

I wish we could trade vick to the raiders for the top pick and get calvin johnson, get a power running back, resign kerney and wed be a good team! i guarntee schuab wouldnt be 0-17 when trailing the game in the 4th quarter like vick is!!! But since blank wont get rid of vick were stuck withhim. owell….man vick u gotta get better!! And show some heart and leadership out there!! And work on your short passing skills!!! And please…next year if its 3rd and 15 or 20, please dont throw the ball 5 yards to get another completion in and pad your stats!! We need a coach who isnt afraid to bench vick if he playing bad…like i said so many times this season…if were loosing in the 4th quarter and dont have enough time to run the ball….get vick OUT of the game!!! A smart coach would use vick as a “situational” qb. and the 2 minute drill is by FAR not his speciality! Like i said….0-17 when trailing in the 4th quarter! If mora had had the balls to pull vick out in the end of game, wed be in the playoffs right now, guarnteed!!

Too bad that Mora made the statement. It takes away from the real problem with the team. Everyone talks about whether or not Vick can see over the line or not instead of whether the receivers can see Vick or pick up the ball. Shorty was a great college QB. It doesn’t work in the NFL. Can anyone name a 5’10” QB that is successful with today’s big lines? Not going to happen here either.

Did you see how well Schaub did Sunday? Sure, he made a few boo-boos but wow, that guy has got it. I had quit watching the falcons the last several weeks but I figured since they were out of the playoffs that Vick would automatically be benched to let Schaub and Shockley play. Well, I am glad I tuned in because it is just what I thought. Schaub IS a great quarterback and has all of the skills; just needs a chance to play more than 30 seconds in the game. If we lose this guy, it will be the greatest disaster the falcons have ever had. Wake up Blank, look at the talent that you have on the bench. Get rid of these overpaid pretenders; trade vick at any cost.

You’re completely insane! I’m no Vick fan, but to trade a guy that touches the ball 60 times a game for a guy that touches it maybe 8 times max per game is just silly (CJ will never be on special teams). Plus, first-round receivers tend to be busts (see the Detroit Lions if you need proof)! And a power back…you want another Duckett?

More importantly, WHO is going to block for them?????

A lot of people here are trying to compare Vick to Peyton Manning. Let’s talk about another Manning, Eli. While he’s only been in the league 3 years, Eli’s stats were about the same as Vick’s. HOWEVER, he got a contract about half the size of Vick’s BEFORE EVER EVEN TOUCHING A BALL IN THE NFL! People should be clamoring for their money back from Eli and the Giants, yet we don’t hear about that b/c he’s white….The Next Coming of (Peyton) Manning. So he gets a pass. Now, I’m not the biggest Vick fan in Atlanta, but I see he has faults (passing accuracy being the biggest issue). I also see a lot more faults on the Falcons team. They need a line that can block and give Vick time to find the open receivers and for those same receivers to catch the ball! We need a true run-stopping defense (read linebackers to support Jackson, Coleman, et. al.) And we need corners that don’t let receivers run by them for touchdown passes all game long (read no more corners from Va Tech). If after these things are done and the Falcons still aren’t winning, THEN I can see people saying that Vick is at fault. Until then, he stays at QB.

Our offense would be alot more potent if we had a touch passer throwing like schuab to crumpler and finneran short…and to lelie and calvin johnson deep!! Pple stop comparing CJ to all the good recievers with mental problems (that guy out of texas that plays for the lions, or randy moss, o t.o.) CJ is a class act on and off the field!! Whoever gets him will be lucky watch! And i never said we needed a Duckett….we need a Jamal Anderson in goal line/3rd and 1 situations!!!
Look at the difference not having Bettis made to the steelers !!!

Bring Reeves Back

You are too funny! No, I’m pretty sure you’re on your own! Defense wins championships, not offense. ATL, just keep drafting offense

First of all I would like to start off by saying this is one of the most disappointing seasons I’ve ever had to endure as a Falcons Fan! We had a shot at the ultimate prize this year and we failed! I was sick and tired of hearing the press conferences where Mora danced around like a show girl when asked a direct question. I really “had” a lot of respect for him until this year. I would like to make this perfectly clear GET BILL COWHER!! He wants to be in the Southeast and hey that is where Atlanta is.. So bring him on board and keep him here for 15 - 20 more years. They guy is a rock and guarantee you he will get our offense in check! As far as the draft.. FOCUS ON OFFENSIVE LINE and get us another hard core LineBacker.. Ed Hartwell is not the answer! Secondary could use some help as well!! LETS WIN A SUPERBOWL and quit beating around the bush!!

YOU ARE RIGHT MISTER MOORE - MOST OF THE AJC READERS HAVE QUIT ON YOU. YOUR RESIGNATION WOULD BE IN ORDER USING YOUR CRITERIA.

To let Carolina beat us without a Quarterback was the worst thing I have seen with the Falcons ,an all time low. It will get better, a change is justified, but the defensive coordinator was awful. Prevent defenses only prevents you from winning.

Well now that mora is gone we need to focus on a new coach and of course the upcoming draft. In my opinion, Calvin Johnson needs to pull a Keith Brooking and stay in the city of Atlanta for his pro career as well. What a talent he is, he is a true #1 pick unlike Roddy “i drop everything” White. Trade schaub and the 10th pick MUST KEEP CALVIN IN ATLANTA!!!!!!!!

hey tired fan and romeo, vicks not the problem. He needs an offen ln and a vertical passing game. How often you uneducated folks when it comes to pro football no sh*…vick has only played 4yrs period! the 1st yr he sat behind chandler the 2nd, he took the falcons at the age of 20 into the playoffs remember or has your bozo racism blinded you. 3rd yr he broke his ankle and your stiffs at qb couldnt win. You vick haters talk as if vick is in his early or mid 30’s. He hasn’t even hit his prime yet!. All of you vick haters are RACIST FOOLS. you don’t say the same statement when eli manning, carson palmer or any other white qbs have bad days. You say vick is a thug. Why? because he’s black and wears braids. You don’t even know him personally you BIG RACIST BIGOTS. WRAP YOURSELVES IN YOUR STANKIN’ CONFEDERATE FLAGS AND ROLL OFF A CLIFF AND MAYBE THE FALCONS WILL START WINNING!

With the addition of Calvin Johnson and some beefy offensive linemen this team is a contender. The defense when healthy is pretty good. We do need a new middle linebacker, hartwell aint cutting it, i do like Abraham, if and i say IF him and Kerney can stay healthy all season with Rod Coleman, there isnt a better defensive line in football. D. Hall needs to beef up a little bit, apparently being the fastest man in football cant help you tackle, who’d thunk. Arm tackles dont get it. Jason webster sucks. Mr. Williams needs to be playing, 1st round pick and he plays behind allan rossum please he has no reason to be on the defensive field except maybe in the nickle package. As far as Vick, there is no bigger Vick fan then me, all you people bringing race into this, that is just ignorance. He is the most phenominal athlete, he has confidence in Alge, look at his catch totals. HE NEEDS A RECEIVER HE CAN BE CONFIDENT IN, SO I SAY IT AGAIN, KEEP CALVIN JOHNSON IN ATLANTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KP you’re an idiot! as are alot of you other bozo’s rambling on in here.

how in the world can you say eli is not getting ripped? HAVE YOU BEEN TO NEW YORK? HAVE YOU READ A NEW YORK PAPER? HAVE YOU LISTENED TO A NEW YORK SPORTS TALK SHOW? no? ya that’s what i thought you moron. new york has been abuzz over the latter part of the nfl season. new yorkers hate eli manning. they are well aware of the fact that they gave up way to much to get a qb who might be good one day but right now looks like crap.

t4, kp… look guys. sports is the one thing that brings everyone together. regardless of color, ethnicity. etc. the city of atlanta wants a winner. period. most of the people here could care less of the qb was white, black, asian, mexican, indian, middle eastern (ok maybe i went too far) but you get my point. it’s all about winning. and when the face of you franchise show’s no willingness to stand up and become a leader. people will naturally criticize. i’m asian. and i dont’ like mike vick. it has nothing to do with his color. it has everything to do with his lack of class and professionalism.

The list put forth my the organization has some pretty good candidates on it. I’d personally like to see Mike Singletary get a shot or Dennis Green, but Whisenhunt, Cowher and others would be an improvement as long as they are disciplinarians who have enough self-confidence not to need the friendship of the players they’re coaching. Respect is required! However, the things that concerns me are the statements from McKay regarding Vick. This is giving Vick far too much leverage and feeds into his messianic complex. It would be nice to have a balanced team, not just one built around the fact that Vick can run like a gazelle!

And the Vick lovers win as the most overt racists here. Hands Down! Can it wings of victory (bigotry). Mora sr. was right and entitled to his opinions but offended a black QB. so he has to go Mike Vick is not a leader. A great athlete but not a leader. His coach stood up for him and what did he do HUNG HIM OUT TO DRY. Dear falcon fans until the Vick contract is up or Blank allows a coach the freedom (real freedom) to bench the franchise football in atlanta will be mediocare. Vicks 12 yard drop backs have been the source of so many of his sacks how can the offensive line block when they have no idea where HE WILL BE. AS A MEMBER OF THE TRIBE (in ebonics thats hey bro for us HeeBS ) Arthur hope u learned a lesson hhere u put all your eggs in the Vick basket and your stuck with him for how many more years. this ain’t basketball and u ain’t abe saperstein. This is a team game and if u make it that the coach is staddled with your naivetee about football and your enfatuation with Vicks supreme athletic abilities. YOU will NEVER FIELD A CONSISTANT WINNER. Arthur don’t meddle hire football people and stand back and count beans and manage the finances. If u had screwd up this bad at the depot bernie would have kicked u to the curb years ago. ARTHUR GO NO FURTHEER THAN THE MIRROR TO FIND OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS TEAM. SOME ONE NEEDS TO COME IN AND CLEAN HOUSE AND TELL YOU TO GET YOUR YID A* IN THE FRIGGIN’ OWNERS BOX UNTIL U HAVE ENOUGH EXPERIENCE TO SPEAK UP. YOUR EXPERIENCE IS A BEAN COUNTER AND GO AND F*NG COUNT BEANS AND SEE WHAT THEY ADD UP TO. U SPENT THE MOST AND GOT THE LEAST IN RETURN DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR. JUST THREW BIG BUCKS AT UN PROVEN TALENT VICK WHITE MEANGELO ETC ETC AT DAMAGED GOODS HARTWELL ABRAHAM ETC IF YOU CENTER A TEAM AROUND ONE PLAYER AND THAT PLAYER DOES NOT DELIVER THE GOODS WHO STEPS IN. Arthur U are the problem and u have staddled the Falcons with this for some time to come. Until u allow some common sense to over whelme u U ARE THE LOSER. AND WE ARE THE FOOLS THAT WASTE OUR MONEY AND OUR SUNDAYS. MAYBE YOU’LL SELL TO SOME FOOTBALL SAVY GENTILE WHO WON’T EMBARESS ME TO BE A MEMEBER OF THE SAME TRIBE. BYE BRO SHALOM P.s. Arthur until u have the knowledge of Jerry Jones about football get up in the friggin owners box.

sorry bout the double post

Arthur interview many black candidates not just the NFL token then ignore race in your decision making. Then let someone have total say in how the on field team is run and YOU dear member of the tribe DON’T MEDDLE Vick does not need to be coddled VICK NEEDS TO BE CHALLENGED T O BE THE BEST HE CAN BE or benched and U needto eat the loss 5 years of mediocrity and a 50% full dome with regular black outs locally. We bought into your bs a few years ago and now put up or shut up. BUT GET OFF THE FIELD AND quit competing with bernie His aquarium is doing better than your Falcons.
