The seniors on Georgia’s football team are a proud group. That’s why, after the schizophrenic Bulldogs ended their regular season in November after the shredding of No. 5 Auburn on the road and another triumph in their rivalry with a Georgia Tech bunch that was ranked No. 16, there was much gnashing of teeth.
Not among the losers of those games, but among the winners.
Earlier this week, for instance, center Nick Jones sighed as his Bulldogs prepared to meet No. 14 Virginia Tech on Saturday night in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Then the senior said, “As players, you look back at some of the losses this year, and you think about how you’ve beaten great teams like Auburn and Georgia Tech, and you just say to yourself, ‘Dang.’ “
Dang, as in how did Georgia get flattened like that at home by Tennessee? Dang, as in how come the Bulldogs lost to the hated Gators again? Dang, as in how can Georgia lose to Vanderbilt or Kentucky during any season, and how did they get upset by both this season? Dang, as in how come Georgia couldn’t play this way all season after slaying Virginia Tech by turning a 21-3 deficit at halftime into an unlikely 31-24 victory?
“What a comeback like this tells us is that we always play together, and we always play with heart, and that we realize that it’s a 60-minute game, not a 30-minute game,” said Charles Johnson, Georgia’s magnificent defensive end, who was everywhere. His sack of Virginia Tech’s Sean Glennon in the fourth quarter produced a fumble that Georgia recovered and used to create a scoring drive that continued its run toward 28 consecutive points.
This was encouraging stuff, especially if you’re among the Bulldog Nation in search of signs that 2007 will be Georgia’s return to at least the edge of the elite.
Barring injury, the Bulldogs will have Brandon Coutu’s prolific right leg for a whole season. He proved his worth against Virginia Tech after he returned from a nearly three-month layoff (hamstring) with field goals of 39, 51 and 28 yards. Too bad Georgia loses seven starters from a defense that kept making Virginia Tech’s offense implode. Even so, with the accomplished Willie Martinez as defensive coordinator, the Bulldogs will be fine.
Georgia has a nice quarterback, too, with Matthew Stafford using the second half of the Virginia Tech game as his coming-out party. After more than a few sloppy moments in the first half, including an interception that triggered Virginia Tech’s early explosion, Stafford had more than a few splendid moments. None surpassed his well-placed bullet at the start of the fourth quarter to a streaking Martrez Milner for a 41-yard play. It put the Bulldogs at the Virginia Tech 2. Kregg Lumpkin rushed to close Georgia’s deficit to 21-19, and then Stafford fired a pass to Milner in the back of the end zone for the tie.
The tie became a lead that Georgia wouldn’t relinquish. Then again, there was that omen for the Bulldogs. Days, weeks, months prior to the opening kickoff, the folks at the Chick-fil-A Bowl asked a guy if he would do a prayer before the playing of the national anthem.
That guy accepted. Some guy named Herschel Walker.
Actually, during the early part of the evening, this was Georgia’s version of “The Omen,” only this horror movie involved the Bulldogs getting spooked by the Hokies and by themselves. When Stafford wasn’t playing like a freshman, the Bulldogs were forgetting how to tackle on their punt coverage team and how to catch on offense, period.
Then the strangest things happened. Mostly, Stafford quit looking like a freshman. And his receivers began catching passes. And the Georgia defense continued to outshine the nation’s top-ranked defense across the way. And the Bulldogs’ seniors were turning frowns into smiles.

Danny Ware - sure you’re ready for the NFL? nice drop at the 5. Perhaps you should consider a transfer to a D-2 school or something… Either way, not sure draft day(s) will do much for you. Best of luck, though. Go Dawgs.

I hope this was the last game for Danny “no ware to be found.” I am also glad Inman will never set foot on the field again for Georgia. Both seem to excel at talking a good game and not playing one.

Just glad to be a DAWG….Hope that Charles Johnson decides to stay around for another year and he’ll then be a first rounder instead of maybe a third round this year. Dial it up… the dawgs will be in the hunt for the SEC next year..How ‘bout them SILVER BRITCHES ???

Better brush off the old history book. So, even UGA fans can’t spell “Georgia”? Enjoy watching Tech in a real bowl game (i.e. one that occurs on the first of January or later [that’s 01/01/07 for the multitudes of illiterate UGA fans out there]).

Do I hear pangs of jealousy from a Tech fan. What a suprise. Tech people like numbers, right? Here’s two: 15-12. Or two more: 51-7. Or just one: 6 (as in the number of years we’ve beaten you in a row). Be sure to brag about playing on New Year’s day after scraping yourselves off Steve Slaton’s facemask.

When Mike Bobo decided to become his own man and opened up the play book, Matthew Stafford decided that he wasn’t a freshman. The Hokies were alol over us in the 1st half. Ou8r attack was Easr/West, then Bobo decided to go North/South with his poassing and BAM! Matthew Stafford was no longer a freshman. The Defence, interior line play from sideline to side line I was so proud of the “DAWGS”

looks like we know that THE MAN has never received any action. Tech plays in ACC how many teams do they have in big time bowl games. The SEC is posting 9 teams in bowl games and right now their record is looking better than anyone else in the nation. So to all you bitter tech fans out there, one ray of hope. Reggie Ball is too stupid to pass classes so at least he wont be screwing the game up for you.

Yes I forgot to respond to Chris. Let’s remember the Gaytor Bowl didn’t even want Tech (Due to the lame ACC championship game Jax was hosting a month earlier). Chik-Fil-A didn’t want them in a rematch with UGA, they knew even in Atlanta GT folks would not buy all the tickets. Gator was forced to honor their agreement with the ACC, but their reluctance to send a bid to GT was funny. And as Ron said, talking smack after GT’s innocuous finish is truly laughable. Have fun in Jax GT. WVU ain’t no walk-in-the-park as we found out in the Dome last year.

GA played like a true team for four quarters..even when sme bad breaks cost them early, they hung in and stayed true to the team. Va Tech is a good team and we simply just outplayed them…. as for you jacket fans…God, don’t you have other things to worry about than trying to bud into our victory… you guys may be in for a serious whipping if you’re not prepared for WV. We did our job, now you you do yours!

Amazing to me that there are GT fans on this blog still running their mouths slamming UGA. All season the GT “fans” were on our blogs rubbing our face in our dissapointing season. Then we beat the crap out of them (AGAIN)and they still want to run their mouths.
What’s more amazing is that they backed into this horrible horrible ACC championship game and they don’t even go to the game. It was unbelievable to see all those empty seats. And I don’t care if it was raining. UGA fans would have sold out that stadium by ourselves.
So, back to Jacksonville GT. Will your team or your fans show up this time? I doubt it. You’re all too busy hanging out here flaming UGA.

I graduated from UGA in ‘75 and have pulled for the Dawgs since the days of Larry Rakestraw and Jim Wison. Nonetheless, I’ll almost always pull for Georgia Tech when they’re not playing UGA. State Pride may be the reason I feel this way, but pathetic comments such as those by ‘the man’ (or should I say idiotic fool) make it difficult.
Back to the real subject FOOTBALL: Last night’s Georgia victory made me as proud as any I can remember. Terrence Moore’s article said it well. Nice job.
The game also showed how important Brandon Coutu is to the team, and what may have been had he not been injured this season. Most importantly, I hope it gives Mike Bobo the confidence to put together game plans that utilize the strengths of his players. In todays world, aggressive offensive play is the key, and Georgia has the talent to make every play count. Defensively… well keep fueling the junkyard mentality.
Go Dawgs!, … and good luck to Tech against those hillbillies from West Virginia. Not having Reggie Ball may be just what they need to inspire a victory.

Since this has turned into a UGA vs. Tech thing… Let me say something I’ve noticed over the last few years. Is it the fans that wag the team or the team that wags the fans? I noticed the GA Tech football team (not all, but most) lost in Athens and immediately left the field without even shaking hands! Nice sportsmanship?. Tech fans whine and complain about UGA and their fans about how bad they are. While coach Richt demands his team respect each opponent, including Tech. It’s no wonder why the masses follow UGA and Richt. While Tech fans & management accept mediocre results, flashes of greatness and settling for continuous disappointment.

Great game Georgia. Living in Virginia I couldn’t enjoy this victory more. In addition to the great victory by UGA it was great to see Kentucky and South Carolina win also. This time of year I become an SEC fanatic and even pull for teams I normally detest….they are still part of the “family” and members of the best conference in the country. It is a shame that college football is coming to an end for 2006. Can’t wait till next year. Go DAWGS!

Btw, I’m unfortunate enought o live within 20 minutes of the VT campus. Blacksburg has likely had the largest grounds maintenance crew per capita in the nation every summer with the number of VT players serving their community service.

Herschel Walker is undeniably the greatest player ever to play football at Georgia. He did more to put Georgia football on the map during his three years at UGA than any other player has in four or five. He is obviously completely loyal to UGA, as can be seen due to his frequent appearances at Georgia games. Why hasn’t he been offered a coaching position at UGA? He would be an awesome inspiration as running backs coach. Is he otherwise occupied and uninterested in making a change? Has an offer been made that he has turned down? Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about his current circumstances. Could someone enlighten me?

i love herschel but herschel is a strange bird (in a very good way). i do not think he would ever want to coach. he likes to do his thing. i see him as someone who stays involved when he has to out of loyalty but otherwise does not want to be tied down. he just thinks, lives, and conducts his life much different than most people. if he decided to dedicate himself to coaching though, i have no doubt that he coach because of his mental discipline and behavioral discipline and his knowledge. what better strength coach, conditioning coach, running backs coach, and special teams coach (he was a great special teams guy in the NFL) could you have? i have no doubt that herschel could not do anything he sets his mind to but i am also fully aware that what motivates the rest of us does not motivate ole 34. he just thinks and behaves himself on a different plane than the rest of us. he truly is a strange cat.

Congrats to UGA and their football team. I think we can concede that the Dawgs are the best team in Georgia. But do ya’ll realize NOBODY even talks about UGA outside the State? Most of you weren’t born the last time the Dawgs were relevant this time of year. You should chill out and hope the new crew of recruits devlope the way the last ones didn’t. If they do then you actually might have something important to talk about this time next year.

You’re right about me not understanding the passion. What actual difference does GA football make in your life? Will it be better if UGA ever beats Florida?
As for relevance I suggest a team needs to be in the conversation about a national championship. One of UGAs big problems is the Dawgs NEVER plays outside the Southeast. Who was the last team UGA played, on the road, thst was in the top 20 outside the SE? For all the shouting I hear/read about the dawgs being great, they never put themselves on the National stage to earn any recognition. Say what you will about Arkansas getting kicked by USC, they had the cojones to go there and give it a shot. Meanwhile, UGA was beating up on Who? In Athens?

The Georgia victory is what this blog started out about. Let’s keep our eyes on the ball people. If memory serves, and I believe it does, the last time UGA played a team from the Commenwealth at the Dome the script went very much the same as it did last night. Down at halftime, the Dawgs staged an impressive comeback to post a victory. I was very encouraged by the way Stafford got it together as well as the play calling of Bobo. This was not the season it could have or should have been. Losses to Kentucky and Vandy are a hard pill to swallow. But, a victory over ranked teams in your last three games is a heck of a way to end a season. Not too many teams can make that claim this year

Do you really think USC was calling UGA to play them? You obviously have not followed football very much to so easily dismiss the SEC scedule, and it’s not our fault , our in-state rival stinks most years. So by your definition there are only 2 maybe 3 relevant 3 teams per year? Would winning 10 games and ranked top 10 consistantly not count as relavant? I’ll tell you one thing, the relevant teams that are in the national spotlight and conversation for a championship all seem to do that, except for UF this year, which just had things fall in place.
Plus what school’s fans do NOT think thier team is great? When has our fan base EVER bragged about anything beyond reality? We do so get tired or other folks telling us what we think.

What game were you watching Saturday night VTH8tr? Georgia was worse than VT in the thug category. Trash talking and hands in the face after every play. Tech got 4 fouls because the retaliator always gets caught. And Massoqois’ illegal cheap shot took out Flowers too. Techs got a bad reputation but be fair and call a spade a spade.
