All business, no hype for Jackets

Mark Bradley

Jacksonville — Always “the other team” in its state, Georgia Tech is likewise “the other team” here. Wake Forest is the warm-and-fuzzy component of the ACC championship game. The Jackets are the guys this city might not invite back should they lose Saturday.

You’d think a team playing for an outright title would arrive with few negatives attached, but Tech alit in Duval County being treated as damaged goods. The Jackets lost to Georgia in a game so deflating it made their fans wonder if their school will ever beat the Bulldogs again, and then Tech became the crux of a catfight between the Gator Bowl, which will be staged here New Year’s Day, and the ACC.

And somewhere the greater point has been obscured: That one of the half-dozen best Tech teams of the past 35 years stands a great chance — the Jackets are favored over Wake, lest we forget — to claim only the Institute’s third conference crown since 1952. No, they didn’t beat the Bulldogs, but who would have believed in August the assemblage from Georgia gracing a conference championship game would be “the other team”?

“It is a great opportunity,” Chan Gailey said Friday. “It’s something that hasn’t happened in a while.”

So many things have gone right that it’s unfair to fixate on the stumbles. Calvin Johnson became the ACC’s player of the year and a first-team All-American. A fleet and fierce defense drew national notice. A coach stuck on seven wins already has won nine and could win 11. A program that has never landed in a BCS bowl would book passage for the glitzy Orange Bowl with a victory today. Does losing to Georgia really override all that?

Said Gailey: “Would we like to be undefeated? Sure, why not? But we’ve lost three games, and one of them happened to be last week. In my opinion, I don’t believe there’ll be any type of hangover effect. If anything, there’s a little bit of burning in the pit of our stomach.”

Pepto-Bismol might bring temporary relief. Beating Wake would provide something more lasting. As Gailey said, “When you hang that [conference championship] banner in your stadium, that’s for eternity. They might renovate the stadium, but the banner stays.”

The run-up to the game itself has been all Wake. The front sports page of Friday’s Times-Union featured a massive photo of the words “Wake Forest” being painted in the Alltel Stadium end zone and an accompanying feature on Deacons coach Jim Grobe. At the bottom of the page was a tease to a story on C7: “Gator Bowl officials say there isn’t a deal in place to take Georgia Tech if it loses in the ACC title game.” Some welcome, huh?

Not that Gailey, who doesn’t traffic in artifice, noticed or cared. “This is a business trip,” he said. “I think Tech people understand business.”

As for Wake being cast as Cinderella: “I’ve never played Cinderella. I hope they play like Cinderella.”

Tech, as is often the case, finds itself in a peculiar place: It has had too many winning seasons to be seen as a bolt from the blue, but it hasn’t won quite big enough to have stamped itself as a power player. But that’s the perception from the periphery, something else Gailey claims doesn’t matter: “If you let other people dictate how you feel, you’re in a bind.”

So let’s flash back to August, to a conversation with an ultimate insider. “We’re looking for 10 wins,” said Mansfield Wrotto, the offensive tackle, “or nine wins or more, and to play for the ACC championship.”

Here it is December, and here the Jackets are, dead on track. If they didn’t win every game they could have, they nonetheless won enough to clinch a division that includes Virginia Tech and Miami with a week to spare. They don’t have to apologize. They made it on merit.

I wouldn’t mind seeing that.

Who really cares about this game any way. The ratings are gonna stink and even if we win what have we really won!The conference is way down this year and our team is struggling after an a* whipping at UGA. lETS FACE IT OUR SEASONS OVER! Calvins gone and there”s not much to look forward too. Nix goes to FSU as a play caller and then recruiting goes to crap.Just another tainted Championship just like the co- championship in 90.Lets face it we really suck.

Couldn’t we start Reggie at flanker and Taylor at QB? If he gets drilled trying to haul in one of Bennett’s passes, so what. It may knock some sense into him. I know Calvin would appreciate the move and the irony.

Food for thought. Jax and it’s press is loaded with Rabid Bulldawg fans who migrated from the Peach state. Also there are tons of FSU, and UF and Miami fans in the area not exactly a favorite clientele for Tech to get favorable press. Also Wake is loaded with some Jax High School Graduates. However, because Tech is recruiting Jax and the area more they are landing some big time prospects and will continue to do so in the future because these kids see that Tech provides a better package of total atheletics and academics than these other fan based schools have to offer.

Hooper, you doofus, if you’ll take a look at the ACC’s website, you’ll see that Georgia Tech’s allotment of tickets is sold out, however Wake tickets are still available.

Hickanator, since you obviously are not a fan, never went to Tech, and are off your meds, nobody is interested in your opinion. Hooper, I thought you went to FSU. “Teams” play the game, “fans” buy the tickets. If RB shows up, the Johnsons score 4 TDs and Tech wins by 23. It will be sunny and warm on Jan. 2nd in Miami for win #11. Careful what you wish for; VT has the makeup to humiliate the dogs - good luck. Hope for exciting games and no injuries.

I am a UGA grad and I have to say that I am really rooting for the Jackets to win this game. This is Tech’s greatest season in a long time, and it would really say something about the quality of the ACC if its champion (should Tech win) lost to the NUMBER 7 TEAM IN THE SEC. Ha ha…six straight years!!!

Maybe Reggie should throw out the first ball in loving memory of all his fantastic contributions. Naw, it would sail 6 rows deep into the stands. Congrats to Calvin and Philip Wheeler. I think Anoai, Johnson and Tasard are playing awesome too bad one guy spazed and lost to those damn dags. Can’t wait for Taylor. What is Reggie’s major anyway? I’m guessing Health Services or something like that—-doesn’t matter he’ll come up short. He should focus on studying and forget football.

As with all of our other games this year: “Reggie Ball is the key to this game.” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that my 3 years at Tech. I have faith in our Jackets. They will prevail because we have a better team and stronger, athletic players. I expect Deuce to run all over Wake and if Reggie is “all-there”, Calvin will crush them. It’s a good year to be a Jacket!

WRECK WAKE!!!

P.S. I sincerely hope VT crushes the dawgs. They have rude, disgusting, awful fans and I want them to suffer. GO HOKIES! I will be driving up from Macon to see us crush those little doggies in bball too. HAHA!

I had hoped for a GT win last weekend, but I am aware of UGA officiating in Athens. Yes, Tech is banged up but I’m sure that our record for Football Wins in Athens is a lot lower than for games on North Ave.

By UGA standards, the Football team has not dominated against the big SEC teams this year. They even lost against the Wildcats.

I’ve noticed how UGA is the preferred team for merchandize marketing around the State of GA. The planets almost have to be in alighnment before Tech can get a fairly called game against the “Flea-bags” of Clarke County.

I am a DAWG fan and the comments posted on this column is why i can’t stand Tech and their fans. Everyone Tech fan is quick to point fingers at Reggie Ball. let’s not forget that it is this same Reggie Ball that has got the Yellow Jacket to the ACC Championship. I would admit that some of his decision making on the field are not very bright but he still goes out there and tries his best. Most Tech fans are all caught up on “Calvin Johnson” play making abilities and have forgotten about the person throwing him the ball in the past 4 years. If we were all to point fingers at someone i think it would probably have to be the overrated coach and his bloated salary. Most schools recruited Reggie Ball to play anything but the QB position including LSU who recruited him to be a WR. But who recruited him as a QB “Chan Gailey” and his staff at Tech. Reggie Ball went to my HS along with Kregg Lumpkin, TJ Gartrell (UGA), and Michael Grant (Arkansas) and i know how he has a tendency to blow big games. He did it in a playoff when he was sacked on fourth down running around the field. Even though he was sacked on fourth down, we didn’t single handedly call him out for costing us the game because some of the WR dropped some of the passes in the end zone and the line wasn’t blocking to well. Reggie Ball made some mistake but the wide receivers weren’t helping either dropping some of the passes. I guess the point that I am trying to make is that the Tech fans should support their QB and the team when they play wake forest this weekend.

Andy, the receivers dropping the ball plays for UGA. Reggie can’t hit the side of a barn, or we would have beat Georgia. The receivers have to be able to at least touch the ball before they can catch it. I hope Taylor gets his shot to show just how good he really is. If not I just hope Reggie doesn’t blow another winable game.

I love the blaming of the refs from Triad. Have some cheese with your whine, you pathetic loser. South Ga - yeah you had us on the ropes, and you couldn’t close the deal. The difference between a championship team and, well, Tech. After the Techmites lose today, I believe you will have just as many losses as UGA. Glad you enjoyed your “great” season, Nerds! Oh, and bring Va Tech on! Do you really think we are scared of an ACC team? One that Reggie Ball hung 40 pts on? Ha, Ha! And one other thing: 15 - 12 6 in a row

Mark, good column.

Why aren’t the Gator bowl officials saying they don’t want Wake if they lose?

If things get too tense over this, maybe the ACC should consider moving the ACC championship to Charlotte. That would be more centrally located than Jax anyway. Especially if the Gator bowl dumps the loser in the ACC championship game.

I hope the Jackets win today and let Wake be the one the Times gripes about as the New Year approaches.

As for Reggie, he has provided a lot of fodder for discussion the last 4 years. He has been both “Good Reggie” and “Bad Reggie” during these 4 years. Let’s hope that “Good Reggie” shows up today.

Also, let’s not forget that Reggie is a Tech man, and wish him the best in his future. Go Jackets!! Go Reggie!!!

NC Triad, your comments about the officiating are very inaccurate. It is common knowledge that those were ACC officials who made the call. For several years now SEC officials call the games in Atlanta while ACC referees monitor the action in Athens. Your complaint is actually with a crew from your own conference.

Let’s face it Tech fans you are second class. This is the reason you can not sell out your own stadium unless a quality team is coming to town. You do not travel well and what bowl would want you for this reason. This is the second best team Tech has had in the last 40 years and you can not find a suitor who is willing to take you. Even the Peach Bowl (the local bowl) would rather have VT (whom you actually beat) over your sorry fan base.

You will always be second class/tier!!

By dadgum

December 2, 2006 11:18 AM | Link to this

For all you DAWG fans on here, #1 you guys aren’t playing in the Chick Fil A Bowl, #2 if you did and the opponent is VT you very possibly would be shut out much less have a chance.

When GT played in Athens it took a horrendous game from Ball(more Ball than your defense) and a lucky fumble return to just squeak by. This on a day when UGA QB Stafford had a good day. Granted you won but there was nothing in that game to suggest you beat too many top 20 teams without luck.

GT will win today with an average or better effort from Ball and continued great defense. From there they will go to play either Florida or Arkansas in the Orange or should they lose they will play in the Chick Fil A against most likely Tennessee or the Florida/Arkansas loser.

By firstclass

December 2, 2006 11:28 AM | Link to this

Go easy on the hallucinogens, dadgum.

Chick Fil A has stated it would prefer to not have the North Avenue insects.

Looks like the Dawgs have been “lucky” for six straigh years.

Go ahead and tell everyone how you “almost” beat ND also. Check out what Michigan and USC did to them if you want to know what it is like to beat ND.

By dadgum

December 2, 2006 11:51 AM | Link to this

First Class huh, nobody mentioned luck over the last 6 years. We are speaking of this year and the GT game. UGA is simply young and not on a par with their prior talented years. That simple. UGA is totally outclassed against any VT matchup.

Dude the Chic Bowl will be pressured by the ACC to take Tech should they lose to Wake. Remember we dominated VT at their place. At worse we are a #2 in the ACC team and if the Chic passes on a #2 team regardless of the new procedure for picking the team then I think they send the wrong message. The loser of the ACC game is technically #2 in the ACC for the year. The Chic is #2 in line. They should be held to taking the #2 team. Simple. If they don’t this is how bowls are losing their credibility.

But whatever dude…..rock on

Dadgum, as I posted above, UGA isn’t really worried about a team that Reggie Ball (lol) has lit up. Dogs are in the Peach, mark it down. Firstclass, I love the ND comment. We see what happens to ND when they play real teams. UGA was lucky, blah, blah, blah…whatever you want to tell yourself to make the pain go away. 15 -12

dadgum, you have no idea what you are talking about. If Tech was to win today they would play either Louisville or Rutgers. Wouldn’t that be funny- Tech/Rutgers in the Orange Bowl. Almost as funny as Tech/Wake in the ACC championship. The SEC Champion will play in the Sugar. As far as being lucky to beat top 20 teams Tech was lucky to beat schools with 3 wins or less. N.C.State and North Carolina for example. Tech is not that good. Wake will show that today. The bad news is Stafford is a freshman. It makes me laugh to hear people hype Taylor Bennett. He’s probably holding a clipboard wetting his pants about gettting into the game. GO DAWGS

Dadgum,

Will check back when the bowl selections are made. Look for #2 (Tech or Weak Forest) ACC in the Chick Fil A (lol). Face it nobobdy wants these weak links and the bowls are doing their best to not have the loser of that game. Gator Bowl is already trying to ditch the loser. Face it without Miami, FSU, VT, or BC nobody really gives the ACC credit. Your best hope is basketball season (which by the way SEC is defending champ! UGA stinks at BBall however thanks to cheatin’ Harrick).

Mark, I really wanted to believe your article before the game, but after, its apparent that Ga. Tech has major coaching problems, except for Jon Tenuta. They are predictable , predictable , predictable, on offense. I have to lay that right at the feet of Nix and Gailey. They are calling the same plays week after week and apparently expect Reggie to get a different result. As a fourth year QB , he still doesn’t look off receivers. He locked on to Greg Smith after he replaced James Johnson as if he thought Wake didn’t know Smith was on the field. ALso, they never throw to their TE or FB ,they had poor clock management on a crucial 4th down, and no special plays for critical moments of the game. At this point in the season , for two weeks in a row,Tech has been beaten by teams with arguably less talent. Or maybe , the reality is they are really only an above average team that had one good game all year (VT), and on offense the coaches still don’t know how to get the most out of what they have. Well, Tech does not deserve to play in a BCS game , and the sad thing is, based on their last two weeks, they don’t look very attractive to any major bowl. They are boring, except for their Defense, and that’s becoming a tired cliche, and Calvin…who will almost certainly leave after the whimper of an ending to this season.

Funny how everyone points to the Kentucky lose, they were 4 yards away from beating Tenn, in Knoxville. Also Kentucky went 7-5 and is going to a bowl. Lets see who GT beat, Samford, Troy, Miami, Virginia, UNC, Duke, NC State, VT, and Maryland.

So your only quality win if you can call it that is VT who isn’t eve ranked anymore. So for all this talk of a good season, there is a chance to be 9-5 without a win over a ranked opponent.

I love all the GT fans saying that UGA is just happy about their one win season. How bout beating #5 Auburn on the road. Going possible 9-4 with a freshman QB and without a kicker all year (costing us the vandy game solely on XPts). yet for that great season on North Ave to possible be 9-5 with senior QB, and it being so called “their year” LMAO
