0-for-Georgia to be part of Ball’s legacy

Mark Bradley

Athens — Reggie Ball was checking his e-mail as he walked into the interview room. Perhaps he found encouraging words therein. Perhaps he found an answer for what has become — and will forever be — unanswerable: How could the quarterback who has presided over 29 collegiate victories never win the game that matters most to his constituency?

Not that Ball was willing to concede the point. “I want to win every game,” he said. “I don’t buy into that ‘rivalry game’ — that’s for [the media] to do. I go out [and] I don’t care if it’s two old ladies playing flag football — I want to win.”

He wants to win. Nobody disputes that. But this much is likewise indisputable: Handed chances to win against Georgia each of the past three seasons, Ball and Georgia Tech lost instead. What transpired Saturday wasn’t his most egregious moment in the series — that remains the fourth-down throwaway in 2004 — but it was his worst overall performance against Georgia and among the worst of his strange career.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

Ball’s numbers this forlorn day: Six completions, 16 incompletions, 42 yards passing, minus-10 yards rushing, three second-half turnovers. This from a fourth-year starter. This from the guy who has Calvin Johnson at his disposal. (Johnson had two catches Saturday, neither in the second half, for 13 yards.)

Asked if Georgia had become a personal speed bump, Ball said: “Come on, dog. It’s a game. Georgia’s Georgia. They’re a good team, but they’re no speed bump.”

Ball finishes his career 0-for-Georgia. Chan Gailey, who hitched his program to the true freshman four years ago, is the first Tech coach to lose his first five games against Georgia, and at some point we need ask: Is Gailey a great coach for having won so many games with such an inefficient quarterback, or is he a silly coach for having gone so long with such an inefficient quarterback?

Of Ball, Gailey said Saturday: “He didn’t play as well as he has … I don’t think he was in sync.”

Yes, Tech still has a chance to win the ACC championship and play in the Orange Bowl, but a goodly quotient of luster fell away from Gailey’s best season Saturday. The Jackets absorbed a curious haymaker — Tony Taylor returning Ball’s fumble for a go-ahead touchdown seemingly hours after the fact — and took a fourth-quarter lead. When finally Tech’s defense buckled, the Jackets still had time to answer. They could manage only one first down on their final possession, that courtesy of a Quentin Moses personal foul, and then the chance died. Throwing off his back foot yet again, Ball was intercepted by Paul Oliver.

“We were trying to make a play on the next snap,” Ball said of the Moses penalty. Was he pressured on the throw? “That’s what happens in football.”

It would be easy to feel a twinge of pity for Ball — Georgia students mocked him Saturday with chants of “Reg-gie, Reg-gie” — but he makes it apparent he wants no one’s sympathy. He suffers media inquiries with something approaching scorn, and maybe we shouldn’t blame him. Few collegians have ever been held up to such scrutiny.

Still, that’s the price for playing quarterback at a school that takes football seriously. Ball has had splendid moments in his career — two victories over Auburn, two over Miami, one over Virginia Tech — but he has never beaten Georgia and never will. Said Tashard Choice, who accounted for 151 of Tech’s 188 total yards Saturday: “Sometimes things don’t go the way they’re supposed to. You have to roll with the punches, and we roll with [Ball]. And we’re going to take it as far as we can go.”

If Tech wins its next two games, Ball will match Shawn Jones as Tech’s winningest quarterback. But Jones won a national championship and beat Georgia twice. For the Jackets as led by Ball, it’s clear now that this was as far as they could go — they could win big games but never the biggest game on their schedule. Never even once.

I’ll be the first: Althought Reggie had a terrible game, most of the blame goes to the coaching staff.

Tech could have run the ball for over 300 yards if they had stuck with the running game! TC was hot and after Tech drove to the 40 in the second quarter, all on the ground, only to throw deep, that told us that they were going to win….or lose with Reggie’s throwing.

It hurts and hurts bad. UGAg has Tech’s number and Tech are a collective headcase when it comes to playing UGAg. Just as UGAg are a bunch of collective headcases against Florida.

Bottom line is this: If Tech wants to average more than 3 out of 10 against UGAg, they will have make some painful choices regarding where they want to be: A football factory or an engineering school.

I think it’s really easy to dislike Reggie Ball especially when you think back to when he took a cheap shot against one of Georgia’s trainers in his first game against Georgia in his freshman year. He is as much of a hindrance to Calvin Johnson as he is a help and most likely is the only thing that will have kept Johnson from the Heisman. Tashard Choice, on the other hand, is a bonafide player and appears to play with a lot of pride. I’m proud of the Dogs (and the SEC today), but if I were a Tech fan (an awful thought), I would be quietly celebrating that this is the last day of the Ball Era.

Nice try, John. Football factory, you guys kill me! No Christmas bonuses for the Engineering Faculty ( er..coaches )this year :(

Here’s the reason you lost:

“C’mon dog, it’s a game,” Ball said. “Georgia is Georgia. They’re a good football team, but they ain’t no speed bump or anything like that. It’s just a game. Unfortunately for us, they’ve come out the last couple of years and won the game.”

John, Don’t hide behind the engineering/football factory crap. Admit it. The ACC is an inferior conference and the record TODAY clearly shows it. Three of your best this year lost to SEC schools today. Two of the SEC wins (including UGA) were against mid-level conference opponents. Tech recruits the same players UGA does. Gailey hitched his wagon four years ago to a loser, i.e. Reggie Ball. He and Tech are now paying the price.

In the spirit of Auburn’s Beware of the Thumb, Tech should Beware of the “Bird” Finger (on the second hand). This means seven in a row next year for UGA.

Just step up and say it - Reggie is the worst D-I QB that has ever played major college football. How sad is it for the other guys who dominated every other aspect of the game that they can still lose because of one person? However, there is a bigger factor here that you touched on…Chan Gailey is the one who is responsible. As much as I HATE Reggie, I hate Chan more for refusing to acknowledge his mistake and move on. A middle school QB could have led this team to the same record and even a bad QB could have won 10 games. And worst of all, Gailey never found a way to take advantage of the best player ever to play at Tech. Today was a day like so many others this season…even if Tech had won it would have been unfulfilling. Their offensive line dominated, Choice was having a career day and they still had the best WR in football on their team. Yet Gailey found a way to do what he always does…suck the fun out of this team, and that is a damn shame…

John,

Your comment is absurd. Are you ready to trade the academic prestige of Georgia Tech for “football”? No. No way. In fact, it is not even necessary. Given adequate…No, given below average QB play, GT wins this game hands down. And, with the win, no one mentions one word about academics. As a Tech alum, I expect Tech to play smart, intelligent, competitive football. We have been extremely competitive this year without question. However, we are not smart at the position that matters most. This greatly disappoints me. This must change. We should never sacrifice what Ma Tech stands for to win this game. Tech can be Tech and beat UGA. Lately, we have very simply fallen short because of a lack of leadership at QB. We also need our coaching staff to display the savvy to make a change when leadership is fundamentally lacking at the most important position.

Why Tech Lost: You nailed it perfectly! Reggie made excuses for his own poor play with that moronic comment.

I still stand by my comment that if they had run the ball more, that Tech would have won.

Come on John, Tech has more non-engineering students than it does engineering ones these days. You guys need to get over your inferiority complex and cut the “superior intellect” garbage you turn to every year after we whip you on the gridiron. Tech and Georgia are both great schools and yes, by all accounts Tech had a better football season this year. Which, by the way, proves you can be a great school and have a good football program. Unfortunately, you guys are one player short of having a great team, a quarterback. Now suck it up and go win the ACC next week. Though most will not admit it in public, many of us UGA alums will be pulling for you.

Reggie Ball Legacy? LOL. There is no legacy - but this loss isn’t his fault it is our coaches who continue to play him even though he is injured, can’t run, fumbles away touchdowns and can’t complete a pass!!!

Nice work Mark Bradley. When I read where you picked Georgia I thought, aw shucks we will probably get beat now with AJC picking us. Your piece on Reggie was dead on. For whatever reason, Reggie has plain stunk it up against the DAWGS. Ga fans will take Stafford any day of the week over a loud mouth punk like Reggie. He showed his class once again by shoving a Ga player after the last turnover. GO DAWGS and good luck to the Demon Deacons next week. I would pull for the Bugs, but based on the blogs tonight the Bug fans are bad losers. Stop making excuses and take your butt whipping for the 6th year in a row.

Barry: I would NEVER want to see Tech degrade themselves into being a UGAg as far as academics. All I’m saying is that if Tech wants to win more than 3 games in a 10 year period, they will have to reconsider that approach. Personally, I don’t think its worth it.

Let the uneducated rabble that make up 90% of the UGAg fanbase be happy with a scholarship player CBS gloated about majoring in Home Economics with a less than B average and beat Tech 7 out of ten.

But I don’t ever see Tech being able to do more than what they are doing against UGAg. Historically since 1963, Tech has lost 70% of the time and I don’t see that changing.

All I’m saying if the Tech fanbase want to beat UGAg half of the time, then they need to decide what they want. If they want to beat them 5 out of 10, then make the changes. Otherwise don’t complain they don’t have the horses to compete.

Thank God Reggie is gone in 2 games. Tech will get rolled next week and get rolled again in the bowl game. Reggie just suxs and you cannot defend it. He has single handedly lost 3 games against GA. He cannot see over the line and just thows the ball up getting his receivers killed. On another subject, Calvin leave and go pro, Chan has shown no loyalty to you by continuing to play that chump of a QB.You do not owe GT anything and you can get that degree later. It was sad to watch you get held and then get open to only have the ball thrown all over the place. Maybe you can hook Reggie up and let him be your lawn boy after you go #1 next year.

I agree 100% Brad. I had to laugh at the article a few weeks ago about David Braine all smiles because Tech was 9-2 and going to the ACC game even though we were pathetic against UNC and limping into the second half of our season. Wake Forest will smash us easily if Reggie plays. What coach continues to play a guy who is injured, can’t run, fumbles away touchdowns and goes 5 for 21, or something like that, in completions?

I said it during the middle of last year-only one more year of putting up with Reggie’s crap….Bizarre play from Reggie was a good way of putting it. Nice butt whipping by winning by 3 points. Also, way to show class by chanting Reggie, Reggie, Reggie…at the end of the game. Way to have fans that will kick a college player when he is down, poor form. You call us bad losers when in fact you guys are the ones that, win or lose, will always show no class. Congrats on the win…obviously somethings needs to change for the Jackets to win games in this rivalry.

I agree with with you 99% (except being a Tech fan, since I am one). But you are right, Reggie has been harder for Tech to figure out than the opposing teams (i.e. today’s game).

With all due respect to the young man, he should not be getting this kind of criticism, because he shouldn’t be playing Div 1-A football. There is no denying his athletic ability, but his QB smarts are to be desired. I don’t know if it is loyalty or Capt going down with the sinking ship, but Gailey has always made excuses for Reggie and said he was Tech’s best chance of winning. I find that hard to believe, especially after going 6/22 for 42 yards to 2 ints, and don’t forget the all important fumble, that he is Tech’s best option at QB. Not to mention if he doesn’t fumble, UGA is not on the scoreboard until the 4th qtr more than likely. I could be wrong, but it seems like he lacks the desire, maybe that’s why he is such a headcase.

I know a lot of Tech coaches and players were saying next week was more important, but I bet they don’t feel that way now. If Tech plays like this next week, Wake will win by 2 TDs.

I despise Georgia, but I will give them credit, they played their heart out, and some, but not all, of Tech’s players did not.

I’m glad John thinks he can feign moral superiority when Tech had ten players blow their eligibility a few years ago and wound up on scholarship reductions for using other ineligible players. Good thing Georgia Tech has integrity, otherwise, who knows what they would’ve done. They might’ve even been involved with a major drug deal involving a trunkload of pot. Oh wait, Tech did that too…

John,

It’s funny that GT fans can’t figure out why they don’t win more often. They don’t take the game seriously. You think that snide comments about the “uneducated rabble” makes any difference to Georgia fans? Hundreds of thousands of us are educated and have taken our place in leadership in many fields. How’s that Tech Law School rated, by the way? Georgia’s is in the top 40 nationwide. Business schools? According to Forbes, a UGA MBA grad makes more than a GT MBA grad (oh, wait, let me be clever like you: Georgia YECH) for far less in tuition.

So is paying more to make less part of what makes a Tech, um, Yech graduate so brilliant?

You nerds will never be winners in this series because a Georgia player or student or fan has no need to point out others deficiences, because we know what it feels like to succeed.

I am not going to come onto this blog to gloat and taunt all you pencil necked geeks. Tech worked hard for this season and I’m sure they hated to see it fumbled away. At least it was a real fumble, not like Jasper Sanks. The Tech Athletic department is the real villains. They promised the Tech fans that Chan had to show “marked improvement” or he’d be gone in a year — and then a year later said that 7-5 was as good as it was going to get and extended Chan’s contract by 5 years.

Be glad the ACC is in the toilet this year or you Techies would be looking at Toronto (or the Nut Bowl again, where, as you may remember, you got thumped by 28 points by the third best team in the Mountain West Conference).

Next time, try to remember the Smack Talking Rule: Win, then talk smack (because talking smack and then losing makes you look really, really foolish — almost as foolish as losing by 28 points to the third best team in the Mountain West Conference).

By the way, you can’t really play the “we can’t recruit well because of academics” card after 2 weeks of claiming that you’ve caught up to UGA in recruiting. Also, bragging that you have smarter athletes and then complaining that your senior quarterback makes bad decisions is contradictory.

I do have one positive thing to say abouth the ACC this year — The ACC refs make the right call (and verify them on review) and don’t try to give the game to Tech like the SEC refs have done.

Look at the bright side: Your crippling loss to UGA today probably cost Tenuta a head-coaching job. He is really good and he’ll be much needed next year as you break in a new QB — a new QB that Chan thinks so highly of that Chan wouldn’t consider playing him instead of Reggie.

On the no-so-bright side, Calvin is almost certainly gone. Calvin’s seething was visible, and it seemed that it was directed at either Chan or Reggie and not at the UGA players who shut him down all game. It does not seem likely that Calvin will want to take a chance on a new quarterback next year (even in an ACC with several new coaches).

P.S.: Thanks Clempson for the easy recipe for a victory over Tech (double team Calvin and pressure Reggie — although I don’t think Reggie was double-teamed the entire game).

15-13 (it’s not 51-7, but it’s almost as emotionally satisfying)

Memo to the team: Reggie - you are terrible. Good riddance to your loser mentality, inability to throw the ball in bounds, poor decision making, thinking you’re a linebacker when you need to THINK like a quarterback.

Gailey and Nix - Reggie is what he is. Shame on you two for not developing a better quarterback for this team in 4 years. Get some creativity in your play calling! Too bad you have wasted the best talent the two of you losers will ever coach. Have you ever seen how other teams work to get their best talent the ball (Arkansas - McFadden, Florida - Harvin). No way a talented quarterback should come to play for you guys unless you show him how you will bring in some one that can develop a quarterback. Reggie has not improved one bit since his first game against Auburn - that goes squarely to coaching. Oh, and you might want to educate our next QB that the UGA game is NOT just another game!

Defense - How about stopping the other team after we score? You guys did play great for 50 minutes tonight. Unfortunately, football is a 60 minute game and somehow you guys always seem to play soft and allow the other team to score after we get ahead. With a QB like Reggie, you guys have to play perfect.

Tenuta - you played Kenny Scott on Massaquoi all night and then decide to go zone at the end of the game? You choked!

Calvin - You are an awesome talent and I can not imagine the frustration having to play with a QB like Reggie and playing for the incompetence of Gailey/Nix. However, you have got to go up stronger to catch balls and become tougher. How about not tripping over your own two feet as turn to see the ball? Watch the USC film and see how Garrett and Smith go up to catch the ball. Arms extended and they snatch it out of the air and hang on to the ball. I was glad to see that you were Ped tonight. Now go after the ball like you’re ped.

James Johnson - Grow some. You’re gonna get hit whether you catch it or not. The only two good throws that Reggie did make, you alligator armed like a girl.

Offensive line - great game! you guys manned up and have really improved this year.

Choice - tough running and great game. I look forward to you and the O-line next year. Did I mention that Reggie will not be back next year? YEA!

Team - Good luck in the ACC championship game and the Orange Bowl. You will have to play perfect to win both games as you already have two strikes against you with Reggie and Gailey/Nix. We only lose 3 starters from each side of the ball and I can’t wait until next year - we will finally see a Tech team without Reggie’s incompetence. You’ll still have the one strike against you (Gailey/Nix), but that should be easier to overcome. FIGHT ON MEN!

Ya’ll are suffering from the same mystique we face in jacksonville every year. We beat fla upand down the field but you cant overcome turnovers very often. Like the falcins your qb is what he is. Nix should be questioned for giving up the run while holding timeouts at the end of the game, and needing only 3. My goodness we couldn not slow down choice in the second half. Very good game, yet the victory is ours.

Jackets best in state, ACC By Mark Bradley | Wednesday, October 11, 2006, 06:47 PM In this posted on October 11, Mark Bradley clearly came to the that Georgia Tech was definitely going to beat Georgia. This was what I posted on that day regarding the article. “By mystirymes October 11, 2006 08:05 PM | Link to this Obviously Mark doesn’t know anything about college foot. First off the SEC is a much better conference than the ACC. My question for Mark is how many top 10 teams are in the ACC compared to the SEC in BCS ranking? I know you don’t know anything about college football so let me help you out. ACC –NONE. SEC – Florida #2, Tennessee #8. If UGA played in the same conference as GaTech, they would probably dominate. I would admit that Georgia Tech has improved a lot this yeah but not good enough to beat UGA come November 25, 2006 in Athens. Mark is going to swallow his own words come November.” Well Mark it looks like I was right then and I am right again now. It looks like you need to switch to a different profession or write articles on a different subject because when it comes to college football, you don’t have a clue!!! Now you are trying to justify your previous articles by using Reggie Ball as a scapegoat. Even though he’s not the smartest QB out doesn’t mean that we need to bash. As bad a QB that he is he was still able to come off with 9 wins. Most of these wins came from ACC teams (not the best conference when it comes to football anymore) is big a win regardless of his performance. Well I am happy that the DAWGS proved that there better than Yellow Jackets. It will atleast shut the Jacket fans up including “Mark Bradley” as to who has the better team. # 6 and counting…….

If you saw him in person you would shake his hand with a big stupid smile on your face talkin bout”Wow, it’s Reggie Ball!!! I’m a huge fan!!!” Reggie won you 29 games and for tech that’s a dynasty. I ain’t no tech fan, but I am a fan of Reggie Ball. Sometimes he’s good and sometimes he’s not so good; but I’ve never seen him quit and that’s admirable being that he is still a kid. He doesn’t get in trouble and he is going to have a tech degree, which I’ve heard was pretty decent; and that along with his attitude should guarantee him a successful life. For all you football gurus and can’t wait to see him leave, you are gonna find out why the so called worst qb in D-1 was a 4 year starter when you see the team next year. I agree, Reggie is erratic more than half of the time. If Chan is dedicated to winning then why does he never pull Ball from the Game. Richt has used 3 different QB’s this year, trying to find the right man for the job. I believe Richt is just as dedicated to his players as any other coach but is more dedicated to winning for the team. Why is Chan so reluctant to pull Ball and give Bennett a shot, especially when the game is on the line?

How would you feel if when you were a college kid in your late teens and early twenties, and you, your son, your cousin, your nephew, your grandson, your brother, your friend, your neighbor, the guy you go to church with on sundays had to be constantly attacked and criticized by a bunch of creepy old alumni, spoiled brat undergrads, and jackass UGA fans all over a stupid football game that is played by a bunch of college kids. It is not right. I care about the dawgs as much as anyone but college football is college football. If he was being paid $130 million like Vick in the pros, then hell go for it. He is just a stupid college kid just like I was a stupid college kid and the rest of you were stupid college kids.

I will say this about Reggie. That kid tried harder than pretty much every player in the NCAA over the past four years. He left every ounce of effort, blood, sweat, and tears out there on the field for you. Were those QB skills limited due to height issues, the fact that he has a decent but not strng arm, and the fact that he has speed but is not wicked fast and quick like Vick or Pat White? Yes! SHould he have been playing safety instead? Yes! Is it his fault that he was the starter for the last 4 years? No! He was recruited to play the position and his coach never found someone else to take it from him! That is the coaches’ fault, not reggie’s fault! He just did what he was asked to do and I have never seen another player care as much or try as hard as he did.

Does he have a chip on his shoulder? Hell yes he does. He is 5 foot 8 inches tall trying to play a tall man’s position. That is the only way he could ever somewhat be a QB. Look at Doug Flutie, another tiny guy who had the biggest chip on his shoulder for 25 years in college and the pros. That chip was so big that Flutie had to spend 10 years in exile in the CFL before the Bills brought him back to the NFL. I would not say that Ball’s chip on his shoulder is any bigger than Flutie’s ever was. Did it come out misguided and misdirected and angry at times? Yes! But was he under constant attack during his entire late teens and early twenties by creepy adults who like to attack young college teenagers? Yes! So how would you expect a stupid college kid to act when he is being perpetually hounded by creepy alumni and spoiled brat undergrads? We were all stupid, immature, and overemotional at that age and we all did and said things we regret.

I think that if Reggie had played for a better program or a better coach, the perception of him would have been much different. I compare him to the Newton dude up at South Carolina. Under Holtz and Spurrier, the newton guy was a coaches dream. He started games at QB, RB, WR, Safety, and played special teams. He excelled at times at all positions but was really a jack of all trades and a master of none. SO, i think that if Reggie had had a better coach who brought some other QB recruits in, Reggie could have been a change of pace, lightning in a bottle QB late in a game or a season like Newton was for a stretch this season, or he could have been a decent change of pace Dave Meggett like RB, a decent eric metcalf like WR, a hellcat on special teams, and probably a very good safety who would have ripped people’s heads off. SO, i think a big part of the problem with reggie was that Chan sucks and that Chan should have found other good QBs to play and then used Reggie in that jack of all trades role where he is just valued by the team and fans and alumni and undergrads as a good hard nosed football player who will do anything to help the team win. BUT Chan sucks so it was not meant to be.

Granted, Reggie’s comments after the game were regrettable and they do tick you off. But did you see him at the end of the game? Just by looking at Reggie Ball and his body language, no tech fan was more angry, embarrassed, humiliated by that performance than Reggie was. I mean he did not even walk over to give the little kissass obligatory handshakes with stafford, richt and the dawgs after the game because he was so disgusted with himself and his team for losing that game. Contrast that with MV7, who last week after that disgusting ravens loss was seen by all of us going over to other team, giggling, giving high fives, and just have a yuckfest and grand ole good time with Ed Reed and Mcnair. As a falcons fan, I wish we could take even half the competitiveness, heart, and desire out of reggie and combine that with the talent of Mr. Vick.

Do I understand how disappointed you all are yet again with reggie and the bugs? Of course. But please remember that kid may have been limited in ability but he gave you everything he had for 4 years.

Besides, bug fans, you have got to play in the conference championship game next week. Yes, your QB played bad. Do you not think that he and his family and friends are going to read this crap? How is all of this negativity going to help the confidence of your QB and team when you need him to be the difference maker or at least to play decent enough to allow CJ to be the difference maker next week?

Stop being so selfish. Rally around your QB. you only have two games left with him. Those two games however are important ones: ACC championship game against a terrible Wake Forest team and then the bowl game. You need him to play well. So stop the silly selfish woe is me, napoleon complex all you techies seem to love to have and rally around your team and QB.

Sarfdawg! Finally, I see you on a link! How are you and the former softball player? Great, I hope.

This game for Tech will go down as a lost, blown opportunity vrs a classic like the ‘78 game. The run back on the fumble was ridiculous, you play until the stripes blow the whistle. All my life in watching this game, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen Tech take a late lead only to see the Dawgs make a determined drive to take it away.

RB’s problem is RB. For four years Tech fans have watched him look lost on the field. His only consistency has been his inconsistency. Thankfully, we only have that to deal with for two more times.

Congrats to the Dawgs, again. You wanted it and won it. More importantly, you put it together after mid-season disasters. See you in Athens next year when the Gamecocks (31-28 v Clemson) come back to town!

Dear techies,

Thank you for the public venom you are spouting about a college kid. I am sure it gives recruits many questions about attending the Clemson(engineering school in S.C.)of Georgia.

See you next year,

UT_TechFan you made a reference to what Ma Tech stands for. What are you referring to? 114 years of ineligible athletes, 100 lbs of pot, and Jeff Foxworthy? So, I hadn’t heard much talk about firing Chan these last few weeks. Is that about to start back?

Yes, I’m a Tech fan and we deserved to lose. But how can anyone say that Calvin was pathetic? He caught what he should have. If he’d caught anything else, it would have been a SportsCenter Top 10 play. Hats off to UGA for a hard-fought victory. Coming in to this game, some fans fron both sides were downplaying the importance of this game, because they were looking for excuses before their team lost. That’s bull^%%$. This loss stings (no pun intended). This game was, and always will be inportant. To those who say hat Tech will be down next year because Calvin will be gone: Our QB who neutralized our best receiver ever will also be gone. I call it a wash. We’ll ride Choice next year til his legs fall off. Let’s beat WF in the ACCCG and go to the Orange bowl (or lose the ACCG and get a rematch with UGA).

I am one of those so called “fat fourty year” alumnus I have earned the right to say what I will about the Falcons, Dawgs, and yes Tech. Because I have grown up here and given thousands to each of these organiztions. I also waddle my fat butt down to the Ajax placement center each year to hire Tech hopefulls. If I want to bust Vick or Ball for crappy games, then I damn well have earned the right. I have seen a dozens coaches and even more quarterbacks come and go. No doubt Reggie and Vick have a desire to win, but thats where it ends. They don’t quite have what it takes to get r done——-so good ridance to Ball and hopefully Vick too, I wish them well. I believe every fan deserves better and when you suit up or step on Bobby Dodd field or Sanford Stadium you are in a place of honor and better play like it.

I’m ashamed—-that was the best he could do? Tech’s defense was great with the exception of the late zone coverage which allowed the final touchdown. Special teams were great too, the offensive line did great as did Tasard. I am sorry Reggie held Calvin from being a true Heisman canidate. Next year the game will be in Atlanta and we will have a new QB——Taylor Bennett?

Next year I’ll give again and reserve the right to critize as I see fit.

Ralph the Dawg, noluv and the rest of UGAg folks - you miss the point. (BTW - to hear a UGA fan rebuke another team’s fans for calling out college kids is laughable - Martez Milner anyone??)

Here is the point:

“We’re going to do what we do and we’re going to go 110 percent like we do every week, but it’s a big rivalry game.”

Reggie Ball - last week before the game.

Not that Ball was willing to concede the point. “I want to win every game,” he said. “I don’t buy into that ‘rivalry game’ — that’s for [the media] to do. I go out [and] I don’t care if it’s two old ladies playing flag football — I want to win.”

So which is it?? The point -Ralph the Dawg, cause I want you to stay with me here - is that the kid doesn’t have the character to accept responsbility for his performance. He changed his tune baesd on the result. I said elsewhere, I can live with the fact he is under-equipped and playing the wrong position. But to refuse to shake the hand of your opponent or to take responsibility as the designated leader of your team - that’s pitiful and demonstrates a lack of maturity that I think Division 1 college football player should possess. So forgive me if you feel the assessement of Reggie is unduly harsh. Sure I hate the fact that Tech lost the game. Several defensive players took responsibility for losing the game when the defense gave up the same # of points as the QB!

As for the ‘he is just a college kid’ -spare me the pollyanna, self-righteous garbage. The vitriol directed at Reggie Brown by the UGAg “faithful” a couple of years ago for a dropped pass against Florida, makes that ring a little hollow.

The closer this season gets to its end is the closer we get to ending the Reggie Ball era. Thank the Almighty for that. He is the worst D-1 quarterback to remain a starter that I have ever seen. Chan Gailey is undoubtedly the most stupid head coach in D-1 to condone the poor play, actions, and comments by Ball for four years. Patrick Nix needs to be the head coach!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s done. It’s over. We lose again. UGA does not have one of its better teams; even their fans admit that. Tech loses because we continue to play a kid at QB that is not a D1 Talent. He has weapons galore around him and cannot win THE game (regardless of what some UGA fans say, it is). A winner puts the team on his back and finds a way to win. Stafford surely did that. Richt did too. Richt continued to run the plays, screens and underneath routes, that allowed his QB to make plays. Nix did not do that. I am certain that Richt would have run plays, other than deep sideline routes, to get an elite WR open. Of course, he has QB’s that can deliver the ball. GT doesn’t.

Reggie has been at GT for 4 years, and he says this is just another game. I saw him laughing on the sidelines at the close of the game. I’d say his actions speak the truth. This is not just another game.

Being Thanksgiving, I’m thankful that the Reggie era at GT draws to a close. Honestly, I’ve seen far better QB’s playing high school ball on Friday nights. I can only hope GT recruits one.

ON one of the tech blogs I got criticized for wanting to see white tops andgold pants on the players when they play at home. I consider that uniform traditional values for GT.I also feel when you upset traditional values you lose in the end. Some folks said I was unfair and needed to get over it.Well, when I see in the paper a Tech qb say the Ga game aint a big thing and that its just a game,my blood boils. Now explain that to my traditional tech fans! How can we compete when the qb has no burning desire to beat ga.Beating Ga is TECH Football period. We get recruits from the state and good bowl games when we win.The bragging rights are righteous too!Hate to see CJ go but he needs to catch a football without jumping around like superman.Reggie should have been taken to the woodshed by Chan years ago to explain the tech ga game.It aint no small contest, its the state championship. This upsets me and other sixty year old jackets who still like white tops and gold pants at home and a qb who is foucuse beating ga.Post game comments were awful yet Chan still plays him. What a mess!

John, In case you didn’t know, GT already sacrificed academics for athletics when they knowingly played ineligible players including Joe Hamilton. Do you hold student athletes to the same standard as students? Do student athletes need to score a 1400 on the SAT to be admitted to GT? Spare us the crybaby academic talk. One thing we agree on, you should have stuck with the run. Good luck in the ACCCG. I would love for UGA to own the ACC champs.

You are saying that GA.Tech can win the ACC with the players it has now. But to beat a team no better than 6th in the SEC, they have to become a “football factory”.

What does that say about the strength of the conference Ga Tech is in?

Dear John, You are academically dillusional. If you look at the number of total applicants compared to to the number of those accepted, UGA is a very tough ticket (do the math Einstein). Both UGA and Yech are fine academic institutions (something of which we should all be proud), but if you think every Yech football player is studying nuclear physics, you are hallucinating. I am close to a former Yech player and have been close to Yech football in the past. There’s not that much difference between how the players are treated academically.

Why don’t columnists like Bradley mention their predictions “after” the game. Bradley smugly predicts a Tech win “prior” to the game and then it is never mentioned again when he is incorrect.

How about something in the last paragraph like… I thought Tech could win this game because… but I underestimated the talent on the Georgia roster. That would take a lot of class. I guess we will never see it.

Now let’s do it from tech.If Tech wants to win they must change the coaches now. They also must not let QB1 lose in Jacksonville . What else is new… Mark Bradley is eating his words again. He is king of the pre-mature celebration, declaring Ga Tech the best team in Georgia when the season wasn’t half-way over. Now what Bradley? If Tech is the best team in Georgia then what does that make UGA after the win? Now typically he makes a column sticking Reggie Ball with the blame (which isn’t exactly wrong, just seems like a cop out after all that talk). so that makes the answer bad coaching and a bad choice for our qb.

if reggie ball is the best qb we have had in the program over the last 5 years than whomever recruites qb’s or evaluates them or coaches them needs to be fired!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

during reggies reign ‘sic’ we won inspite of reggie not because of reggie!

Taylor Bennett should have started the 2nd half. It was apparent that Reggie Ball was going to do everything in his power to choke the game away again. This has been his problem his entire career
