There’s a method to Knight’s “madness”

Terence Moore

There are a few things you should know about Bob Knight and his latest “controversy” involving the most overrated slap (if that’s what it was) in history.

First, when you agree to play for the guy, you know what you’re going to get, and it isn’t the Mister Rogers of college basketball coaches. Second, neither the Texas Tech player who was slapped (if that’s what it was) by Knight nor his parents had a problem with whatever Knight did.

Here’s the third and biggest thing: Knight rarely is out of control.

I’m serious. After covering Indiana University basketball during the late 1970s for the Cincinnati Enquirer, it became clear to me that, more often than not, Knight knows exactly what he’s doing in the midst of his so-called “controversies.”

Those “controversies” often are about Knight sending a message to his players, to the opposing team or to the officials.

Once, I was at Assembly Hall for a Big Ten game that featured a struggling Indiana team and the crowd chanting a vulgarity at the officials. Knight rushed to the scorer’s table (I don’t even think he called a timeout), grabbed the microphone and yelled to the crowd to, well, uh, stifle.

There was dead silence. Everybody was stunned by what Knight did and said. Then Indiana sprinted to victory.

Afterward, there were the usual “Knight is out of control” comments, but you know what? Knight had controlled the crowd and spurred his team onto a win.

The only thing more overrated than The Slap (if that’s what it was) for Knight was The Chair. Contrary to popular belief, he didn’t turn into a white-haired King Kong 21 years ago by throwing that chair at Assembly Hall. He slid it across the floor toward a harmless spot.

So much for Pscyho Bobby, at least in that situation.

Make that in most situations.

I love Bobby Knight. But I don’t know if I even could have spun it better than you did, Mr. Moore.

Looked like a punch to the chin to me. I always thought a slap was done with an open hand not a clinched fist. Anyway, I’d hate to see what would happen to Bobby if he hits or tried to mis-handle the wrong player. UGLY!!

I watched the video and it was definately not a slap and definately not a punch.

Saw it on AOL with the headlines - Knight slaps player - clearly done to generate a reaction. They do it and ESPN is infamous for doing it.

Knight clearly did something - but not a slap or a punch - probably a hit to get the kids attention as a point was trying to be made and the kid would have none of it. If it had been anyone other than Knight, nothing would have been made of it.

Those who support Knight will defend him and those who can not stand the guy will also use it.

didnt look like a punch with a closed first to me…..reports say his parents agree with what he did because their son has problems with looking people in the eye.

I played college baseball for a guy similat to bobby knight in his often unorthodox ways, but you know what….i respect that man today…and GDG73…if anyone of my team mates would have gotten outta line and challenged our coach, there would have been 27 other guys standing rght behind coach…cause there’s something you see on the inside that outsiders just dont see….you see the reasoning behind things. You see that the “madness” works and there really is a method to the madness….

gdg73, weren’t you one of the clowns who were defending DeAngelina Hall for her cheap shot on Kitna?

And now you’re condemning Knight for what you call a “punch”?

Well, little one, I got news for you: Bob Knight is a pretty big guy, and if he had “punched” somebody, then the person he punched would be knocked backwards.

As it stands, the player in question barely flinched, so you can’t accurately call it a “punch”, now can you?

Of course, gdg73 never lets facts get in the way of his/her opinions.

The fact that Bobby Knight is a pariah to most of the people in our society today is a statement of where we have degenerated.

Most adults in this world are afraid to be in charge, to discipline, to say no, to demand certain standards of conduct, to establish “who is the boss” with teenagers. Consequently, these teenagers think they are in charge. What they think, what they want, and they want it now, lack of discipline, lack of respect for elders is a direct result of to few Bobby Knight’s in the world.

All Bobby Knight wants out of a player is 100% effort both physically and mentally. Most people in the world don’t know how to put forth that kind of effort let alone maintain it over a period of time. This may be the most difficult think for someone to learn.

If we had more Bobby Knight’s in the world to instill this kind of work ethic in us all we would be a more productive and respectful society.

If I had a son who could play D1 basketball I would be happy to send him to Texas Tech because he will learn the most important lesson-how to succeed in life.

I’m not a big fan of Bobby Knight but what I saw on ESPN was a passionate coach trying to get through to a player who was struggling and didn’t want to listen. I gotta admit I probably would have done the same thing with no regrets. ESPN seemed to blow it way out of proportion for the ratings. That’s a shame, but that’s entertainment.

Knew Bob Knight when I was on the faculty at Indiana U. from ‘78-82 and saw him coach at practice and games…he lives for basketball and does not think it’s asking too much for his players to feel the same. He won’t tolerate any freestyle actions from his players if they’re winning by 40 points or one point. Saw the clip and it was like saying “listen up, young man, I’m talking to you!”…no slap, no fist! If you ever heard of the humane acts this man has accomplished it’d give you a different perspective of him. Thanks Terrence for an honest look at a great coach!

Bobby Knight is a winner. He can take a mediocre team and transform them into being competitive. He does not have his picks when it comes to discipline and instructing. He even jumped his own kid when he was on the team. If you play for Knight one thing is for sure, you’re going to be a cut above the rest as a basketball player if you don’t let your ego get in the way. If you listen to your friends with their “man I wouldn’t take that” stuff, then you’re going to be either on the bench or off the team. Isiah Thomas is black and he respects Knight a lot. Knight molded him and prepared him for the next level. Knighs coaching tactics come from the OLD SCHOOL. Back in the day it was nothing for a coach to plant his foot in your behind and nothing was ever said or done about it.

By RecCoach

One more thing. When you sign that letter of intent to play for Knight, you become his property. He’s footing the bill out of his Athletic Budget for your education and he’s demanding equal play for the pay. These kids now days are too soft. If I roll my eyes at these kids now, some start crying and then I have to deal with their momma standing in my face.

Knight is a sick man, much like the guy that beats his wife and claims she deserves it. If a Dean Smith or Bobby Cremins had placed hands on a player the benefit of the dealt would have been offered, but here we have a guy that was banned from a country, had to flee prosecution and had an outstanding arrest warrant for years for assault. I mean the chair thing was minor entertainment next to the bully tactics on this thug’s resume. Some PR firm must have met Moore is a back alley and offered him money to write this article or he is as sick as the coach he writes about. When he starts defending the wifebeater remember where you heard it first.

I only wish I had a dime (or a money-grubby attorney) for every time one of my high school football coaches grabbed my jersey, grabbed my facemask, pushed me or verbally assaulted me. It was good for a locker room laugh then and it’s good for one now. I survived.

You are correct, if you go to Texas Tech you know who your coach is, Bobby Knight!!! He is nothing but a winner and the kids that play for him and stay the course are winners too. There is just to many positive things I could say about Coach Knight, but the one thing I will say is that he kids know how important it is to win, but they know it is more important to be a winner; two different things totally!!!!!

Terrence— Was the player in the ost recent incident black or white? Has Knight ever physically “motivated” a black player? There’s no excuse for Knights behavior. You claiming that players and parents knew what they were in for when deciding on Texas Tech is so lame. That’s like saying that a girl who dresses provacatively deserves it if her date get a little carried away and rapes her. Same thing. No one for any of Knights selfish reasons deserves the kind of abuse that Knight gives his players. Terrence, if Knight abused a black player or a black coach did what Knight does to a white player, Jesse Jackson would be on that one real quick.

I see that Knight is well respected and viewed as a role model based off of these comments…not bad at all. However, GT is correct. If there was unstructured contact between your teenager’s employer or teacher, even a “tap”, the gist of you would probably ensure they were fired, press charges, and maybe even sue. I guess this guy gets a free pass because the payoff with him is that he can offer your son a starting position, which if taken advantage of, might lead to being drafted and a multimillion dollar contract. It adds up to selling your child for personal gain…that’s sick. Granted, I do not have one but my child would not play for him. There are quality coaches (and people) out there who can get a point across with physically touching, tapping, slapping, punching, or whatever you want to call it. Whatever you call it, you would not allow it (unstructured contact) in any other circle and the only difference between it and another is the possibility of a payoff. Mr. Anger Management has been needing help for sometime now. Terence, you should be ashamed of yourself for not only this article but also going on that show (i think it was Fox) to defend him…..

Bobby Knight is the BIGGEST JERK in any kind of sports. And yet we make a heroe out of him. He should be banned from sports and never allowed to coach again.

Your defense of OJ Simpson on JRIB was despicable. You should never be on that show again. You are a disgrace for defending a killer who lies himself to freedom, then writes a book detailing how he killed his wife and another man. I hope I never see your face on TV again.

A coach like Bobby Knight is exactly what Mike Vick and some other Falcons need. I don’t think he would like Arthur Blank’s presence on the sideline. UGA receivers would also benefit from Knight’s “hands on” approach.

Sherrod, do you understand the recruiting process? Every kid on that team made campus visits and a conscience decision to play for Knight knowing his temperance and coaching style. They signed on the dotted line basically saying “You pay for my education, I’ll play for you”. Also there’s a big difference in your reference to a teenager and a college athlete. Once that kid gets to college, they are no longer under your control as far as the university is concerned. They won’t send you a progress report, show you their grades or let you come up for a parent/professor conference. They treat them as adults. Granted Knight does touch his players, but it’s hard to find a coach at that level that does not verbally abuse his players. Most coaches when they know they have lost their star players to graduation will let the media know “this is our rebuilding year”, hoping to avoid some of the pressure from the alumni association and media for losing. I’ve never heard Knight say “this is our rebuilding year”. The man takes those kids and molds them into being a competitive team. And if his players reach the NBA, they are very disciplined and are not the ones into all kinda trouble.

Mr. Moorse you are full of it. Knight is out of control and Texas Tech doesn’t have the guts to do anything about it. The NCAA needs to step in.If Knight used his fist or hand on someone on the street like he did the other night Knight would be arrested. You can’t lay hands on college students. It is akin to wife - beating and the woman is afraid to say anything. Wake up Moore.

I seldom agree with Terrence Moore but I posted this on the Hawks blog on the same subject so…

I wish I had the opportunity to play for Bobby Knight and if I had a son with the ability and opportunity I would send him to play for Coach Knight. I had much less capable coaches in college in my face, saying things just as profane without the positive life lessons.

How many of coach Knight’s players have been involved in unsavory conduct in the NBA? None come to mind. I have posted here more than once in opposition to the language at the NBA games and my position has not changed but I also know what happens at practice and in the locker rooms of college and NBA games.

Always make sincere apologies and look someone in the eye when they talk to you. At least we know Coach Knight adheres to the latter.

If the Texas Tech administration, the player and the player’s parents are unconcerned, then why should we be concerned? The player was not injured.

PS: There are far too many “sensitive” people and far too much concern for someone’s “feelings”. As for the black/white aspect raised in this blog the player Coach Knight supposedly choked in practice at IU (Neil Reid?) was black.
