Tech’s win like lipstick on a pig
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Chapel Hill, N.C. — There is a good thing about already having two losses in November: There’s no need to worry about statement games. Voters aren’t really watching. Computer rankings don’t matter as much. The BCS — it’s all about formula.
When a team has evolved into something significantly north of normal but south of elite, it’s not about style points anymore. And when the offense is managing only seven points against a team that allowed 42 to Furman and 37 to South Florida, feel good that it’s not about style points.
Feel good that when Georgia Tech lands in Jacksonville for the ACC title game, there will be no blockade with security agents saying, “Sorry, but we’ve just learned you only defeated North Carolina 7-0. Please go home now.”
“We got the victory — not the way we wanted it or expected it, but we got it,” center Kevin Tuminello said Saturday. “Luckily, we got it.”
A malnourished 7-0 victory over the worst defensive team in the ACC cemented Tech’s Coastal Division title and a berth in the conference championship game. But the lack of any sort of public celebration afterward fairly well captured the moment.
The Jackets will have a chance to win their first outright conference title since 1990. They will have a chance to go to a real bowl with a real name that you don’t need Mapquest to find. They even can finish in the top 10.
But the way they played Saturday, they won’t reach the Orange Bowl.
They won’t win the ACC title game.
They won’t beat Georgia.
They won’t beat Duke.
OK. They’ll beat Duke.
But what happened Saturday screamed what they are:
North of normal.
South of elite.
Yes, there was so much to celebrate Saturday. It was the season’s eighth win, four games to go. In four previous years, coach Chan Gailey kept hitting his head on the ceiling after seven.
It elevated Tech to 6-1, likely going on 7-1, in the ACC. This comes after the program figured to get dwarfed by the conference’s expansion to Miami, Virginia Tech and Boston College.
But please: Somebody burn the films from this one.
“It’s not your worst fear — your worst fear is not winning,” Gailey said when asked about projections of a letdown against a 1-9 team that already has fired its coach. “You keep trying to tell the players how talented they are, how physical they are, and it was true today. They were physical. They were tough.”
They were helped.
The Tar Heels are so bad that their defense had posted only four shutout quarters all season — until getting three more Saturday. They had been allowing 34 points per game. Opposing quarterbacks had a 150.7 efficiency rating. Somebody should have told Reggie Ball, who was 10-for-24 with an interception, rendering Tech’s X-factor, Calvin Johnson, a non-factor.
In the postgame, we heard about how North Carolina played hard, how no game in the ACC is easy, how “hot” it was.
OK, first of all: The temperature at kickoff was 73 degrees. Maybe it got up to 80. For November, it was hot. For Juno, it was hot. But it wasn’t Death Valley.
As for the Tar Heels, any team that has lost 40 out of 57 games over the past five years has issues. Bad teams can play hard. But they’re still bad.
It was homecoming in Chapel Hill. The masses were elsewhere. You could connect the dots in the stands. Butch Davis will draw more fans at his introductory news conference. So much for intimidating surroundings.
The Jackets’ defense was solid. It also got lucky. Twice the Heels were driving for apparent scores in the first half. Twice their quarterback, Joe Dailey, made horrendous throws in the red zone and was intercepted on consecutive possessions.
Somehow, Tech made a second-quarter touchdown stand up.
“It means we get to go to Jacksonville and have the opportunity to win the ACC championship,” Gailey said.
And he stopped there.
Wise choice.

Coastal champs! I think I know what happened. Tech likes beating Auburn so much we let a few of our players dress in red this weekend and a few mutts dressed in gold (on the offensive side of the ball). How else do you explain the miserable mutts winning and Tech winning ugly?
I only have one disagreement. “They won’t beat Georgia.” I mean on Colorado should have beat the mutts. Were we really that bad the Georgia could have won?

Better to win ugly than lose.
By the way, last week Ohio State and Michigan barely escaped so does that make them “south of elite”?

No big deal.
Heck, Rutgers only beat them by 6 points…right?
Tech’s got some work to do, but they weren’t gift-wrapped this ball game today like Ugag was.

Bottom line is that Chan and the coaching staff is taking a team not even regarded highly by all the experts in terms of recruiting, etc. and taking them to the ACC Championship. It was discouraging to watch the offense play so horribly but we’ll take it and move on to next week.

I was at the game and my impression was the atmosphere reminded me of Duke in 2003 and we know what happened there.
Yes, the offense stunk up the field and the defense was lucky on the two picks.
Let’s just hope this was something we had to get out of our system.
We won and became the Coastal Division Champs.

I think ALL GT football fans .. the ones who know football … CAN NOT WAIT for Regiie Ball to graduate!!! ..
it is sad that that is the ONLY way Chan will not play him … at the edn of the day Chan is STILL inflexible in not at least TRYING Bennett in a game situation …
GT has been winning DESPITE of Ball for so long now … its stunning ..
THANK GOD for Jon Tenuta and our D .. THEY are why we are winning!!!!!!! Period!!!!!! ..despite of Reggie and Chan
UGA will be interesting, not sure Chan has it in him to be a winner

As a long time alum, I live and breath Georgia Tech sports (football, basketball & baseball). There is only one thing I wish for more than watching a Tech game. I wish I could get my hands on those “blackmail” photos that Ball has of Gailey at the summer picnic. That’s the only way I figure why Gailey plays Ball 100% of the time. Those photos must be worth a million bucks.

Ohio State beat Texas handily, Michigan beat Notre Dame handily (sure they were overrated, but still). Georgia Tech exposed a VT team that wouldn’t contend for anything and then won games after that by “just getting by” I really hope they just aren’t using their entire play book instead of actually being this inept on offense. There’s really one way to get the offense down the field: PASS TO CALVIN JOHNSON!

I find it ironic that Jeff Schultz jumps all over Tech. when we play badly, yet with all of the crappy games U(sic)GA has played this year, he still concludes that the mutts will win.
Tech will lay the smack down against the pups this year and will restore order in the state of Georgia. Go Jackets!!!

I’m sitting here watching Wake Forest destroy FSU in Tallahassee. Miami has self-destructed. Virginia Tech is not the powerhouse that they have been in past years since it took them half the season to establish a new QB.
Duke occupies its usual position at the bottom of the conference. UNC hasn’t beaten a Div 1A opponent all year.
Wake, Maryland, Clemson, NC State are solid Division 1A teams, but none are outstanding.
I have bristled all year at all the smack talk about the ACC being “down” this year, but the painful realization is that it is true.
Georgia Tech is a good team. We have an outstanding defense. We have some talented players on offense, but the sad truth is that we are way too inconsistent to be a conference champion contender if the conference had been up to its usual standards.
That said, we WILL win against Duke next week.
We have all the capabilities to beat UGA in Athens. It may well have worked to our favor for UGA to beat Auburn the way that they did today. Maybe this will be a wake-up call for our guys. Had Auburn won today, we would have marched into Athens with WAY too much swagger.
We also have plenty of talent to beat either Wake or Maryland (we’ve already beaten Maryland once).
If we win in Jacksonville, I think we can compete with whoever we see in Miami.
The key will be how our coaching staff and team leaders react to the combination of events that we witnessed today. Do they do some serious evaluation and get aggressive and creative in the upcoming games, or do we continue to stand pat?

So any of you idiots who think we win without him need to rethink your stance. Taylor Bennett is not near as good a quarterback as Reggie, he just had a bad day today. Stand behind your team. Did I ever say anything about this being 1980 all over again? No, I did not, however, the win today was just what the bulldogs needed. I love how some tech fan above said that AU gift wrapped the game for us when UNC’s QB threw two interceptions within Tech’s 10 yard line. Sure, Cox and Irons are banged up, but not 171 yards of total offense banged up. I was pretty sure the dawgs could win this game when Ole Miss played them down to the wire. However, don’t mock me, especially when you make yourself—the self proclaimed most intelligent fans in the state—look well, not so intelligent. I’m not attacking all Tech fans, just whoever the douche is that posted “WOW…. I LOVE IT WHEN I SHOVE PINS UNDER MY FINGER NAILS. DOGS RULE!! SEE I TOLD YOU. Don’t forget it was a 1-9 Tech team that tied a #1 ranked Notre Dame team in 1980 in November that allowed the Dawgs to jump into the National Championship position. Tech had some talent but no depth and lack of experience. It had a future though and so does UNC. There is tons of talent in the state of North Carolina.

I actually wonder if there is anything that Reggie could ever do on a football field that would cause Chan to give Taylor Bennett a try? I rather doubt it.
Tech beats Duke, but loses to UGa. Inconsistnet QB play is a huge part of our problem. Reggie is competitive, but when will we admit that QB play where we get 10-24, 13-36, 3-16, 12-25 in our last 3 and 1/2 games…38%…. is a weakness, Chan.

The SEC is overrated. Just like Notre Dame. Its just a bad habit. You’ve got one decent top 20 team - Arkansas- which actually belongs in the big 12. The dumb pollsters just don’t know it yet. Anyone who loses to UGA by 20 (even 10) dosen’t belong in the top 25.

So what you’re saying, yellowblood, is basically damning Tech, if they were to lose by 10 to UGA. Not any move I’d make in regards to defending my team but hey, your choice. You could really eat your words on that one. I believe that Arkansas will beat UF in the SEC, the playing field is way more level in the east, but Arkansas has been way more consistent than UF. I really don’t think Tech would survive UF’s schedule this year, much less Auburn’s. Most analysts (that’s right the people that get paid to analyze college football) are saying the ACC is down, even a Tech fan above said it’s down, but most of you still refuse to accept it. A conference championship is nothing to be taken lightly and is an accomplishment to be heralded any year. Still looking forward to two weeks from now. See ya’ll in Athens.

So, tell me pups, who exactly is the better team: UNC or Colorado, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Vandy and MSU. Each of the latter teams UGA either lost to or had very close wins. I mean, for crying out loud, Colorado was considered one of the worst D-IA teams in the nation.
My point is that Tech has had one close game against a pretty awful team and UGA has had FIVE. UGA had a great win at Auburn today and we had a great win at VT. And Maryland and NC State aren’t looking too shabby now either.
So, please pups, go and shove your smack talk. Looking at the two records, y’all have no leg to stand on. Sure, if Trey Battle has three interceptions against, we nor anybody else in the nation stand a chance in hell. But we’ll see what really happens come the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

I’ve got to believe that Reggie’s leg problems are worse than advertised. GT goes from calling 8-10 designed runs for him to calling zero. His throwing mechanics have actually deteriorated. That doesn’t usually happen to a healthy senior. I’m just glad we won.

… that it was an 0-10-1 team that tied Tech during its disputed* National Championship of 1990. That means, for those of you who can’t figure it out, that Tech was the only team that the Heels didn’t lose to that year. Even when Tech wins, it sucks.

Do you idiots really want Gailey to change qb’s with an 8-2 record going into the last few games of the season? That’s really intelligent. Tech won and that’s all that matters. The game was not pretty, and we struggled a bit. Good teams find a way to win even when they fail to bring their A game. Tech just did not get up for this game. I believe this will be a good wake up call for the Jackets. We could have folded like Auburn and lost to a bad team. How bad did Cox look? I am glad UGA won. Now they think that they are the #4 team in the country. Arrogance and ignorance are what make Dawg fans. I’m sure they were this good all along. They just had about six fluke games this season.

as bad as reggie is, maybe taylor is worse. after all, during high school taylor sent tapes to tons of schools and nobody recruited him - tech did give him a scholarship but based on the film NEVER having seen him play.
If our two new qb recruits are too raw to start as freshmen, i certainly hope taylor is up to the task. but if chan’s (and Pat Nix’s) assessments are correct, he is not as talented as reggie. and that could be a frightening thing for all tech fans next year.
That said, beat Duke and then Wake/Md/BC and on to the Orange Bowl. GO TECH

After the puppies peed down thier legs and lost any chance of respect by losing to Un-Ranked Kentucky(the whipping boy of the SEC) and Vanderbilt and not playing as well as an uncoached street league team of infants, you still talk about them(bulldogs)as if they they are some unbeatable force. Tech does great things in the ACC this year and you want to break them down because they only won by 7? Well in case you have’t noticed winning by 7 is still a win, and after tech Wins against your beloved puppies this year I’m sure your column will do little to congratulate the Bees on a fine year, but will probably read something like “Wait ‘til Next Year” Pull your head out of your butt and give Kudos to a Home Team that actually Deserves it!

Once again, the AJC is showing that Tech plays second to UGA according to the paper. Did Sonny write this article?
“They won’t beat Georgia.”
So, you’re picking a 4 loss UGA, who’s lost to such SEC powerhouses as Vandy and UK, to beat an 8-2 Tech team that’s only had one bad loss? I hope Schultz goes on record with that one. I don’t see how Tech’s performance against a doormat team in Chapel Hill with a noon kickoff is the picture of what Tech football is this season. If anyone thinks that Tech will play that way against UGA and Wake/MD, then you’re too dumb to even get into Athens.

Jeff must be dancing around the real issue, Chan Gailey (and his offensive coordinator). Gailey doesn’t understand that college football is not the pros. It is devistating in the pros to remove your starting quaterback, unless he’s dead or can’t walk. Arkansas’ coach changed quarterbacks when he reallized the man on the bench could help the team more than the starter. In Tech’s case they don’t need to replace the starter unless he’s injured and ineffective. Chan cannot do this, and that’s why this year will start to go backwards after Duke. Tech will have a difficult time beating Georgia or win the ACC championship game with this offense. The bowl outlook may be just as dismal.

These are college teams with college aged players - they don’t always confirm to the predictions or the stats. That’s why college football is so much fun.

UGAg beats overrated Auburn on the Plains, loses to Kentucky on the road and you call Tech’s program piggy? I’d much rather be 8-2 than 7-4. By the way, with 4 losses, they don’t rank you in the Top 30 until 2007.
Tech won in 1990 against VT 6-3 at home, no it was not pretty, and they even tied UNC on the way to 11-0-1. Say what you want about the game, yes it was ugly, in 10 years, no one will remember the score, only the record for the season. If you can remember the scores, then you must have some hatred of 51-48 or something like that….

Let’s see: We won an away-game during their homecoming; pitched a shutout; guaranteed an 8 win season; are going to the ACCCG. Schultz, you and several other bloggers are charter members of what Bill Curry coined as the “Fraternity of the Miserable”.

This is typical Jeff Schultz….fair weather as always…what are you going to say after we beat the chihuahuas??? Hey, doggies, would you rather beat UNC 7-0 or LOSE vs. Dandy Vandy and Kentucky, ahh? We will definitely OWN you in Athens…and look forward to putting the glorious GT flag over your stupid G logo in the middle of Samford stadium…after we kick your a**, you will have to get the Dog Whisperer for help for all the psychological damage this will do to you…better get that help soon before the basketball season starts…

Tech keeps winning even though RB is still on the team and playing hurt and lousy. If RB breaks a leg this week, will he still start against Duke?? I believe Coach doesn’t want to give anyone else a chance to look good this year because he’s promised an incoming freshman he’s going to start next year. And Coach is a man of his word. We’re going to have another BALL next year. sad

Another thing when did one big win all of a sudden put UGA back it what its fans seem to think they are back in the national championship hunt. The way I look at it they have made fun of reggie for 4 years by the looks of it we get to make fun of stafford for 4 years he still sucks one good game not great doesnt make him the second coming of god

I used to joke that English was not taught at Georgia Tech. Now, based on the quality of the writing here, I’m starting to wonder if it’s true! Yes, surprisingly, it’s worse than the UGA blog! And I won’t even mention the Miami rant, Yikes!
Congrats on a division title Jackets.

Wow! The leg humpers and inbreads are back on the bandwagon. Back to talking trash and sporting thier ugag clothes after beating a team that Tech has beat twice in a row. After losing to the Jackets on Nov 25 the redneck nation will be hurling turkey chunks all over the state. THEN we will feel what we think is an earthquake, but it will really be all of the dog fans jumping back off of the bandwagon again. GO JACKETS!!!!!!!

Yes. Thank you, sir, for those astute comments — well said.

Majordawg, I haven’t seen many of these blogs that deserve a B+ in English or writing (much less an A), but I’m glad that you did admit the UGA blogs are horrible… BTW, inspite of all the comments here, I don’t think Reggie, Tenuta & Co. will let UGA take this one.
GO JACKETS!!

I don’t see the Jackets winning. The Dawgs are finding their identity. Even with 3 turnovers Saturday, UGA managed to stay in charge of the game. The defense mixed up the blitz packages and, shockingly, the receivers didn’t drop any balls. That kind of play, paired with Reggie Ball’s inconsistency, will put Ga Tech into a tough spot. Also, I think UGA may have the same sort of strange power over the Jackets that Florida has over Georgia. This will be the first one in Athens that I have missed in about 20 years. Should be a good one, but I think the Dawgs will get to 8 wins and take some shine off the ACC Championship Game. Although, the matchup has already done that. No offense to the Jackets, but the network and BCS folks were almost certainly looking for: VT, Miami, FSU, or BC to be among the teams in the title tilt.
Wow, I got a little wordy. Sorry about that. Enjoy the Duke scrimmage.
