No longer matter of potential for Vick

Mark Bradley

Cincinnati — Two weeks after a loss he described as the toughest of his life, Michael Vick exited Paul Brown Stadium at a professional apex. A week after throwing the ball expertly against the reigning Super Bowl champs, he threw it even better against a team that believes itself to be of Super Bowl caliber. And those skeptics who wondered if/when this gifted player would ever mature into a full-fledged NFL quarterback. … well, here’s the answer.

He’s doing it now. He’s doing it before our eyes.

He’s doing what he has dreamed of doing since he was a kid in Newport News. He’s running to set up the throw and throwing to set up the run and playing quarterback in a dizzying way nobody else has ever played the position. He has believed himself capable of such feats even as the ranks of his doubters swelled, and what you saw Sunday on the banks of the mighty Ohio was a proud man feeling utterly vindicated.

“I feel like I can [play at this exalted level], if I’m given the opportunity to throw the ball,” Vick said. “I’ve felt that all along. I’m excited I’m getting the opportunity to do it.”

Carson Palmer, the first player drafted in 2003, is considered a quarterback in the classic mode — tall, polished, a thrower first and last. On Sunday, the first player drafted in 2001 threw the ball better than Palmer, who admittedly threw it well. Vick passed for more yards and more touchdowns, completed a higher percentage of his throws and had a much higher passer rating (140.6 to Palmer’s 106.9). There were many reasons why the Falcons won this rather large road game but, these being the Falcons, all reasons must start with No. 7.

Nine days ago, Vick had never thrown more than two touchdown passes in an NFL game. He has since done it twice — four against the Steelers, three more against the Bengals. The Falcons try to pretend they didn’t redo their offense after being pounded by the Giants, but occasionally the truth trickles out. “I’m glad we’re changing,” Vick said. “Well, not really changing. But doing some things differently.”

Whatever the characterization, the effect has been stunning. Greg Knapp has stopped calling dinky West Coast plays and is catering to Vick’s conspicuous strengths. These past two weeks the quarterback has gotten outside the pocket and flung the ball vertically. (Forget that horizontal garbage.) At the beginning of Sunday’s fourth quarter Vick engineered maybe his finest drive as a Falcons player, taking his team to the field goal that would ultimately be the difference, converting consecutive third downs that only he could have converted.

Both times he scrambled. Neither time did he panic and try to gain the yards himself. The first time he hit Roddy White — yes, Roddy White — down the sideline for 21 yards on third-and-16. The second time he found White again for a first down at the Cincinnati 14, and that was essentially the ballgame.

“Other teams have to be sweating,” said Patrick Kerney, the defensive end. “He’s picking teams apart with his feet and his arm. This is what other teams have been dreading since he came into the league.”

And just like that, a reeling team has steadied itself and appears primed to take on the world. Just like that, a frustrated quarterback has found a deeper faith in his teammates and his coaches and maybe even himself. Just like that, a truly big season seems within reach for this team and its ascendant leader.

“These are the best two games I’ve had in a long time,” Vick said, “but I won’t be satisfied until I get a ring on my finger. All this is just preparation. I want to get this team where it wants to go.”

He’s fully capable. Not for the first time, Vick has showed the watching world the peril of dismissing him. He’s not the next Kordell Stewart. He’s not the next anybody. He’s the first Michael Vick.

Great game today by the Falcons. I thought we might be in for a long day since Cinci has such a good offense. This was another statement game for Vick. ~290 yards passing and ~50 yards rushing - amazing. If Knapp and Mora keep the offense open like this, the Birds are gonna be hard to stop. Keep it up!

I could not agree more. Here is the ultimate compliment - is there any quarterback in the NFL you would rather have to play QB for the Falcons? Before you answer Tom Brady or Peyton Manning just remember this is not an offensive line built to hold a pocket or a team with receivers that make plays (though Michael Jenkins shows some signs of being able to).

I’d love to see the pictures Webster has on Mora. The way he has played this season there is no reason why he should be starting.

Nice game, another fun one to watch. Keep your eyes on the prize, Falcons. No letdown next week!

Yall are a bunch of haters why can’t yall just be happy that we won the game instead you find something to criticize. Give it a rest. Vick and the offense looked awesome. At times the defense played with that fire thats needed to get the job done. Remember the other teams are also getting paid so you can’t expect to stop them on every play.

Play of the day was Crocker knocking Ocho Cinco into next week. That sent a message that this team is a little different. Great game by the offense, and the D played pretty well too. Cincy’s offense is no joke, and is getting healthy also. So it’s no disgrace giving up 27 to those guys. Great game by the birds!

Vick + Pass Protection + Receivers who don’t drop the ball = Best offense in the NFL. I predict that it will take one more week - another solid passing game by Vick against the Lions - for the big holes to start opening up for Dunn and Norwood. We’ve also got to play sound defense, but even more importantly, we absolutely MUST keep MV7 aka Superman HEALTHY.

Much credit for the team’s offensive turnaround has been the stellar play of the offensive line , RB’s and TE’s in pass protection.

The last two weeks Vick has gotten the kind of pass blocking teams in Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, New England and New York receive every week. And boy do things look different with our passing game.

Kudos to the League for giving the Falcons the chance to let Clabo show what he can do. And Alexander played a great game as well. Clearly, these new Guards do not give ground or miss assignments as much as the disgraced Matt Lehr.

Weiner is playing well, Gandy has been a huge improvement over Shaffer, and it appears that the missed assignments and lack of strength of Lehr was causing too many breakdowns, too many DT’s pushing the pocket back and now that does not happen. Lehr is not deserving of playing again — clean supplements are available from the league so there is no excuse. He should not be reinserted and hurt the team’s progress. He has had his chances.

Congrats to the coaches and players for a job well done and the adjustments made — both in the play calling, execution and depth chart manipulation.

Tyson Clabo will be a probowl offensive lineman. He is nasty at that guard position. Mike is not getting the pressure up the milddle like he did when the needle sticker lehr was playing. CLabo is big and strong. we will have the best line , once we find another probowl tackle. Mike vick is the man , he is the best in my opinion. yes yes

Congrats, Falcons on your victory today! Defense played much better in the second half (who says the Falcons can’t make halftime adjustments). Keep the great passing game, add the 200+ yards running back to the mix and keep being aggressive on defense in stopping the run AND keeping pressure on opposing QB’s. Sounds like a recipe for facing the Colts in the Super Bowl. Go Falcons!

I hate to sound repetitive, but Webster seems to be the only weak point that is a major concern. Did anyone see how Peyton and the Colts love to pick on the worst defender on opposing teams? well ours is webster! people can throw on him all day the way he’s playing. I still dont think Williams is ready, Webster knows the system too well, he needs to step it up! Big Time!

I have always known Michael Vick had the ability to do things no other QB has done before. It took a HBO interview and probably Arthur Blank telling Greg Knapp that you go before Michael goes to let Michael be the special athelete shine. That was last week. This week I see the defense rise in the second half to another level. Our players have overcome the obstacle that coach’s have placed before them. What a amazing performance today by Michael Vick and the entire defense other than Webster. This guy has to be replaced. GO FALCONS. GO TO THE SUPER BOWL!

Hey! I think them birds look like Super Bowl material! They look like they have it together finally. I like the balance on offense. The defense will come around. Great win for the Falcons, but the defense worries me. JAson Webster is a disaster. I hope that coleman will be back to help the dline. Abraham is done for the season, what a waste. The next 2 games are winable so we need to get things done. Vick will have 20 or more touchdowns this year and should get votes for mvp.

Do any of y’all realize that the Falcons have been able to do all of this on offense because the offensive line is giving Vick time? And who is missing on the offensive line? Only the worst offensive lineman in football: Matt Lehr. And you know what, Kenan Forney isn’t playing either.

Where are all the Vick haters now?!?!? I read every post and didn’t find one of you guys bashing Vick this week. Usually, any article, blog or poll regarding the Falcons, whether it deals with Vick or not, is filled with diatribes about how the Falcons will never be a good team until we trade Vick and make Shaub our starter. You losers had better be prepared for more of the same – this is not a fluke. You better trade in your Shaub jerseys for some #7s, shmucks!!

I agree with Elijah Thompson, Two weeks ago whe Mike Vick struggled (due to mostly issues beyond his control like numerous dropped passes) The people on this board damned Vick to hell. But now that he is doing well, everyone seems to be jumping on the band-wagon and not acknowleging that they have made a mistake when they bashed Vick without logic. All they did was look at his stats and then open fired on him as if everythjing was his fault. Elijah Thompson is right, you guys are some bandwagon riders.

Okay, we all know that you have to have a good offensive line to be a good QB. But, I don’t wanna hear it! It’s time for all the Vick haters to eat crow and stop trying to avoid saying that you guys were wrong in your erroneous comments about Mike Vick. Vick has had two straight games in which he has shown the nay-sayers what he can do and all I hear is how Tyson Clabo blocked. Not taking anything away from Tyson Clabo because he did block well, but two weeks ago 99% of the message board participants were ready to put Mike Vick through a wood chipper and feed his parts to the dogs! Just admit that you were wrong in blaming Vick for everything and stop beating around the bush with your spineless comments and give Mike Vick the respect he is due, Please!

Trent, e.b. beat me to it, but the Falcons had several chances to score at New Orleans. If he had been there to put points on the board they wouldn’t have been pressured to go for seven every posession in the 2nd half of that game.

No matter, the bloom is off the rose for the Ain’ts. They will be lucky to finish 8-8.

Yeah, I agree about Morten Anderson, he may not have the kicking power he used to have but his accuracy is dead-center! As for the (S)Aints. They are paper champions. They just needed to get knocked off of their high-horse. Once everyone stops feeling sorry for them they’ll start getting their @$$es kicked. Especially when the play-off picture comes into play.

I’ll say it again,It’s a Damn shame Vick had to call his coaches and fellow teamates out publicly on HBO to get the coaches to put him in position to use his considerable talents.Like Bradley mentioned in the article Vick made a slip and said “I,m glad we’re changing”. Anyone who has been watching NFL football for 15 years or more and can’t see or understand how gifted and different this guy is from other quarterbacks is either blind or just don,t get it,Kordell Stewart,Randall cunningham,Steve young, and many others could scramble but as good as they were they’re nowhere near VICK,who arguably has one of the strongest throwing arms that’s ever been in this league. The play Vick made on 3rd an 16 to Roddy white was a play only he could have made as quarterback in the history of this league, running to his weak side and turning across his body he threw a laser to no. 84, the only other quarterback who came to mind as being able to do that was the great John Elway. The ones who know and understand has been waiting to see this develop because we’ve all along,That’s what Vick is : a better version of ELWAY!!!!

Time to put Williams in at CB. Jason Toaster is a joke and if your gonna get burned from that side of the field anyway, put in the future corner….what’s he going to do, give up the “BIG” play? Time to bench “Big Play” Jay and get the rookie in….at least he has “make up” speed.

By Jss

Oh no you didn’t call out Lawyer Milloy!!! The reason you don’t see him in coverage anymore is because he’s up in the box since the defense went limb like Rush Limbaugh against the run in the NYG. Without Lawyer and Big Grady, Tiki would have put up 280 on the Birds. What you need to asking is why Big Ed is not filling the gaps! Also, why don’t ask Richy Cunningham (aka Rich McKay) why he cut CB Chris Cash and kept old Webster (aka Elvis “Toast’ Patterson)?

By Brandyman

October 30, 2006 03:27 AM | Link to this

It was good to see the coaches make adjustments to the defensive scheme at half-time. Also cudo’s to Roddy for hanging onto the ball. Last but not least a game ball to Kerney. Using a three man rush on what turned out to be their last defensive play, they overwhelmed the Cinci O-line sacking and stripping Palmer of the ball.

Now don’t take the Lions for granted.

By f00tball101

Though I think it’s better to say that Vick is a better version of Randall Cunningham (in the late 80’s early 90’s before the fibula injury) Elway’s style was totally different and so was Steve Young’s.

By f00tball101

October 30, 2006 03:36 AM | Link to this

You’re absolutely right, Jss. And to add the Falcons DC’s need to implement a more agressive defensive attack and start knocking thes opposing receivers on their @$$es at the line of scrimmage, i mean, I’m not a coach but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that most of the QBs we face are Systematic timing based QBs and it seems like everytime we get even a little pressure it throws those QBs off enough to make them throw bad passes or take sacks. Then we always seem to back off again.

DEFENSE, BRING THE PRESSURE FOR 4 QUARTERS, NOT JUST THE SECOND HALF!!!!! BLITZ THOSE LINEBACKERS AND OR SAFTIES AND JAMM THOSE RECEIVERS. If we are gonna risk getting burned on Jason Websters side then let’s at least make the Qb and the receivers work for it.

Thank God for vick coming out and voicing his frustrations with knapps offense on inside the hbo. Vick realized that knapp and mora were just gonna run his a* like they did 2 years ago . He had 2 speak up. The offense even though mora and knapp will never confess was changed up 2 pass more. I think something did really happen in Flowery Branch after the loss 2 the giants between knapp and donatell. Mr blank must have told them during that reported Closed door meeting with knapp and donatell(without mora) that they had better get their act together or it was their a*. We saw what vick could do with dan reeves , and we now see what he can do when given the opportunity. If Gregg Knapp goes back to his garbage playcalling MR Blank should fire his a*. Bench webster it is sad 2 see him on the field.

I have always thought it was a matter of pass protection and the coaches having enough confidence in Vick to let him throw the damn ball enough (30-35 times a game)to get into a groove. Note to coach Mora: IT’S A 60 MINUTE GAME DUDE! STOP GETTING CONSERVATIVE IN THE 4TH QUARTER TRYING TO PROTECT A SLIM LEAD!

Great Team Work Falcons

1)Jason Webster was exposed like Peyton Manning exposed Denver’s Williams last night. Put Jimmy Williams in the game!

2)O-Line Great Job

3)WR have stepped up and made plays.

4)Defense is finding their identity.

He’s fully capable. Not for the first time, Vick has showed the watching world the peril of dismissing him. He’s not the next Kordell Stewart. He’s not the next anybody. He’s the first Michael Vick.

Well, a quiet blog today compared to three weeks ago. Imagine that…no more nasty, vilotrofic bile from Benedict Arnold Falcon fans. “He’s too dumb. He can’t audible. He can’t throw. Make him a wide receiver or a running back. Hey he can’t even enunciate an audible…blah, blah, blah.” Where the F*%$ are all you guys today? I hope that you “man up” and admit that there is something deep in your psyche that believes that Mike Vick is an inferior quarterback. I’m not going to say what it could be, but you ALL need to do your own soul-searching. It has been quite obvious to many that the play-calling did not match up with Vick’s strengths. It is also quite apparent that someone above Mora had to step in to rectify the situation. Mora, his staff and all you who denounced the playing of Mike Vick at quarterback need to apologize openly for condemning another man in another case of mistaken identity. The myths aren’t true. It is a new millenium. Atlanta needs fans who have released the past and embrace the future. Go Falcons!!

Hey Yall:

Just want yall to know that the FAlcons are “FOR REAL”, They played a masterful game yesterday against the Bengals. The offense and the the defense. However we do need to tighten up our secondary, especially Jason Webster. Hey rthis guy is really getting burnt every weekend. I know Mora got something for this guy, but this something is going to kill us in the long run. Teams know he is a week point. Receivers are running and cathcing all around him. He sometimes look like a high school player out there with the pros. It is like he does not know what he is doing and/or he is phisically unable to compete with receivers at the pro level. Whatever it is something has to be done about it. Don’t this personal, Jason. Hey man, you got to improve or tell the coaches, for the team, let someone else on the team take your job who can do it better. FOR THE TEAM SAKE, MAN. You are hearting us with your current inability to cover pro receivers.

Oh, and coaches, you guys are doing one hell of a job. You know every week you have to be at your best in preparing and responding in game situation. It appears the light has come on under all you guys and I can see the creativity and excitement in the way the Falcons are playing. All of you guys look like “One Heart Beat” out there. You are showing excitement and passion with the players who are implementing your schemes. Keep those schemes coming and have fun in analyzing and dissecting our opposition. You are the coaches. You are key to makking our football weekend great. You have the human resources to take the FAlcons to the Super Bowl. Have fun coaching as the players will have fun playing in getting to that goal: Super Bowl. Remember “the process sometimes is more important than the plan”. Let’s Go Falcons”..

Hey where is JIM? Once ANY quarterback gets PROTECTION this is what happens. He has time to READ the defense, set his feet and throw accurately. I am glad that things are changing in this offense. I am a Gregg Take A Nap hater but I am a man and can give him props these last two games. Now Ed Donatell has to be called out with his bend but don’t break mentality. They did blitz more this game and we all see what happens when you put pressure on the quarterback, they crumble. Jason Webster is a Christain as myself all I can say is this dude is highly favored of God because his football skills are killing us. I know ALL the Vick Haters were praying that he have a bad game so they could blast him this week. Unfortunately, they are not men enough to post positive comments when he does what he does well. He sure looked like a “protypical” quarterback the last two weeks. I still say there were 3 or 4 plays he made last week and this week that NO OTHER quarterback in the NFL makes. If you think I am lying ask #43 of Pittsburgh. GO FALCONS!!!

Everyone has noticed how the middle 3 guys in the Oline have held their own — even McClure — since the League exercised its infinite wisdom and removed Lehr from our active roster.

Now it is time for the Falcons coaching staff to act like true managers beholden to the TEAM and Mr. Blank’s huge $$ investment and make the only decision logic dictates: Don’t mess with the Guards that have taken over. Keep Lehr OUT.

It seems like a “no-brainer”. Afterall, does anyone think Bill Bellicheck would put Lehr back out there given his history of gaffes and getting beaten 1-on-1? Would Cowher return a guy to the lineup who lets his man routinely push him back into the QB’s face, getting the plays blown up.

It appears Greg Knapp is deserving of some congratulations for the revamped passing game, but could Knapp continue to be a successful passing game designer with a LG that has proven he cannot be trusted to hold his ground? And would such a move be fair to the resto of the players — including the $100 million QB — to knowingly give the opponents a weak link directly to our backfield?

Only a FOOL would throw away this good fortune that helps turn around its season. When Bledsoe had the misfortune of getting injured, allowing a (then) unproven youngster Tom Brady to play, and Brady showed what an improvement he made over the team, what did Bellicheck do? And how many Superbowls did he win for his owner, Bob Craft? And how many Assistant coaches in NE have gone on to head coaching jobs — furthering their careers?

Mora, Knapp, Cable, etc. would be FOOLS to put an underachiever back in the middle of the Oline when Clabo and Alexander have shown there is a higher level of play we can obtain. Good pass protection like what we have seen can be parlayed into a lot of $$s for all Falcons folks: Players, coaches, GM’s and of course the Owner. Are they going to allow a guy who cheated mess everything up for them?

Lehr has had his chance. Now let these other guys build their careers here and help the team stay on track. Nobody wants to see the “Jailbreak Offense” with Vick running for his life all over again — but especially this fan.

I was wrong about Mike Vick. I am man enough to admit it. He is blossoming into everything everyone thought he would be and it is so exciting to watch.

It turns out the Vick loyalists were right all along. You can’t really blame the Vick doubters too much though…you just call it as you see it and as it turns out you saw it for what it was and I didn’t. It was poor play-calling, poor receivers and bad protection by the o-line. I knew those were factors, but I also thought (wrongly) that it was more Vick’s fault than anything else.

I am so gald to be wrong and I don’t have a problem admitting it. I couldn’t be more excited at the way the Falcons are playing. Nobody can stop the Falcons now, not when you have Superman as a QB.

I’m glad all the haters are on board. I’m tired of Atlanta looking as though we lack loyalty to our team.

Again I was unable to watch the game, but kept up with it via the computer. It’s probably time for me to invest in that cable NFL package. Games like that you don’t want to miss!

Good luck to the Falcon’s next week against Detroit. Keep up the good work!!!!

By the way, I don’t know about other Vick doubters but was never rooting for Vick to turn in a bad performance. I was always hoping he would catch on, I just didn’t think he would. In any event I am a Falcons fan and I have admitted that I was wrong about Vick.

And while Im really excited about the Win, doesn’t it seem lke we have a great player in Demorroio Williams sitting on the Bench so that Ed “my name is so weird people don’t ever say it” Hartwell. I mean am I wrong, But I don’t think I heard his name all day and I watched the game. I might sound a little crazy, but I think last year was the best thing that happened to the Falcons. I’ve seen a lot of focus no one is getting to high off of this win because they remembered the let down from last year so they are taking it one game at a time. It feels good after defending Vick for so long to finally see that his teammates are stepping up to make plays. That was a major part of the real problem. He’s always made plays, but now linemen are blocking which leads to less happy feet and time for receivers to get open and more accurate throws. That’s why love football no one person can do it by themselves, it takes a team effort. Great Job Falcons, Detroit is next.

Great win. Mora and Knapp finally unleashed Vick and the offense. Now he has to make some changes to the defense. Jason Webster has to go. Can someone explain to me why Jimmy Williams isn’t starting? He couldn’t play any worse. And Ed Hartwell has to go too. Demorrio Williams on the outside with Brooking in the middle is the best combo. Has Hartwell ever made an impact with (even before he got hurt last season)??? No.

The Falcons (99% of them) played one he!!uva a game Sunday. I must say it was a real nail biter and I was holding my breath right up to the last few seconds of the game. Why do you boys do that to me?? I had my fingers, eyes and legs crossed, that Ocho Stinko with his shuck and jive TD dance would have to shave that wanna be rediculous mohawk. Vick was awesome. Vick is tough and I hold my breath everytime he runs cause I think he is gonna get creamed. But he is like the energizer bunny. He just keeps going. As for the Offense they too are awesome. Dunn and Norwood are the best and I like it when Vick dumps the pass off to Dunn. It keeps the other team guessing. About the D-Fence. BLITZ, BLITZ, BLITZ, BLITZ It’s all about going after the QB. The D-Fence is RADICAL. The Falcons showed their hand a little early Sunday, but it makes for a great game. I LOVE it when Kerney flexes his muscles. As for Schaub??? We need another backup QB. It was bad enough he bobbled the ball on the snap (though it may have been a bad snap) but then a QB that can’t throw the ball. What are we payin this guy for??

Looking forward to next week and another GREAT game!!

GO FALCONS !!

Oh just in case the Falcons do read these….Morty: you are my hero. What a leg!! Also, way to go Lelie. I’m not sure you get the recognition you deserve. Roddy: I think you may have your game back, keep it up. Crumpler: I love those hands.

This is what I’ve been telling people…The Falcons have an embarassment of talent when it comes to pass catching. They all showed up yesterday…Crumpler, Jenkins (what a TD), White, Lelie (great trade), Griffith…and even Dunn and Norwood.

Because they are now throwing the ball down the field, it’s opening up the underneath stuff for our speedy backs. I hope they keep this up, because they’ll be hard to stop.

Once we figure out that Webster needs to have a seat, and Abraham gets healthy…look out.

After the game with the Giants it just looked like it was going to be another year like last year. It seems the coaching staff heard him when he was on “Inside the NFL”. The interview Cris Carter did with Vick was gut level. It was necessary. It woke up the offense. Now we are watching the Mike Vick we all hoped we would see on that day in April back in 2001. Consistancy is sweet when it’s on the positive side. Now let’s go to Detroit and beat down the Lions. JUst like we did last Thanksgiving Day but let’s not make it the last win of the season. Just keep the streak going.

The pass Mike pass to norwood for 20 yards was just what mike need to keep the heat off of him keep it up. Defense thank for the pressure this week on the QB. Give the man some time and the possibilities now seem endless for the Falcon offense. I wouldnt have believed the difference 2 big offense tackles can make in protection leading to 2 of the best dayz of THe Vick Era since his first season as a starter. LEts dont forget that he was only about 50 yards away in 02 from 3000 yards passing. As with everyone else on this blog, webster is getting burnt more than some good sticky icky at a Bob Marley concert. Did Hartwell play yesterday? IF he did, as usual his name was never mentioned due to the fact that even a running back blocking him can leave him sprawled out on the grass. NYC,

In accordance to Vick being like Elway, Elway is Vick’s idol. Vick emulates Elway. That’s the reason why Vick wears the Number 7 on his jersey.

Like Elway, Vick was known as a “runner and not a passer.” Elway had the arm strength. Elway, in his earlier days, was known as someone who wasn’t very accurate. People thought they couldn’t win the big game with Elway under center. Sound familiar?

In many cases, Elway’s career looks like a blueprint for Vick. Elway was known as an elusive QB with all the talents, but lacked the QB acumen to win the big game. We was disruptive; not being considered a “pocket passer”, many people would have rather wanted Marino… a more “Manning-ish” kind of QB… great pocket passer with a rocket arm and strong QB skills that can pick your defense apart.

But Elway did not start to win championships until later in his career. He went out just killing the thoughts that he couldn’t win the Big Game.

Give Vick time and he will do the same.

It took Elway long enough

Bruno, you aren’t too bright are you? I took Elway 3 short years to get his team to the Superbowl, and 2 more times within a couple of years after that? Bottom Line 5 Championships and 2 Superbowl rings, so don’t tell me Vick is better because of the color of his skin, because that’s exactly what’s going on here and everyone knows it.

If Elway were black and Vick were white, would you make the same ridiculous claim? OF course not, and you know it. I’m not a Vick-hater, but there are so many Vick fans out there making Vick out to be the best ever. Look at the stats below before you let race be the reason why Vick is better than Elway.

Again, I love Vick, and if & when he accomplishes what Elway, Brady, Montana, Bradshaw accomplished, I won’t make comparisons.

Brandyman & Birdy, I’d kiss you too since Russ has already been offered… your notes were right on target.

How do we get Kerney nominated for Defensive Player of the Week by the NFL? I looked on the website to see if there were message boards, but I didn’t see anything. Do we have to harrangue the sports writers? That was the most impressive sack from a 3-man front I have ever seen. From Lacrosse Scholarship to the NFL sounds like a great way to get a QB on his back, fumbling.

Clabo and Brooking also had stellar days. Alas, Brooking likes playing side not middle so I don’t know if we’ll get to see DEMO again on a regular basis.

Boley was in on a lot, but I agree we haven’t seen much of Hurtwell. The coaches really should be paying attention to the chemistry of players who seem to be working well together. In a game situation, it is probably hard to focus, but… that is what film days are for! See the forest AND the trees.

Let’s keep the air game going above the Lion’s Lair. Is it too greedy to hope to have one or two games where we are not scared even in to the last 19 seconds?

This team is nearly perfect in every aspect of the game. The offense is moving the chains on the ground and now in the air. Special teams are consistent. When I said “nearly” perfect i’m referring to our pass-defense. It is time to use our first pick investment in Jimmy Williams. Jason Webster is getting burnt, but im only speaking the obvious. Otherwise, im so excited how the Falcons are molding. Vick is doing the things all the critics have bashed him for over the last few years. Cant wait to see what they have to say now. Oh yea, the receivers are coming up HUGE! Crump is on fire and a sure catch, Lelie always come down with long-yardage plays, while Jenkins and even White are getting it done! I could mention all the guys so im just gonna give props to the whole Falcons organization. Oh yes, the schedule over the next two games is lighter compared to the last few. GO FALCONS!!!

Great game Falcons! This game was a joy to watch. Vicks play was incredible. Keep it up man. Keep slingin it down field. Thanks for the tough catches in the fourth quarter Roddy. I think you’re gonna be OK afterall, just stay at it. The defensive backfield is still a worry. Teams are able to throw 10-15 yd completion with ease against us. Sitting back in that soft zone and allowing their offense to gobble up yards like Pac-Man is not gonna get it. We have to find a way to jam those recievers at the line and lock them up down field. Our offense has bailed us out two weeks in a row now. We’re allowing too many passing yards and giving up too many points. Jason Webster (and thats all I’ll say about that). Our offensive line has played tremendously. I can’t remember a time where Vick has had as much time as they are giving him now. Keep it up big guys. We gotta continue to incorporate Norwood into the offense. He is a game breaker and going into the second half of the season and the play-offs we’re gonna need his big play ability more often. Alge is back to form and our receivers are beginnig to attack the ball. I’m proub of you guys. If we keep improving down the stretch I see us as a bonified Super Bowl contender.

Terry Bradshaw said it on FOX over a year ago, and I repeated his comments on this blog around the same time after the Miami game: “If Vick ever develops the touch on his passes, he will be unstoppable”. I take you to that touch pass to Jenkins that gave Atlanta the lead. That’s the touch that we true Vick fans have been waiting for since I saw him at VT. Maturity comes with time, and you know what’s best? The plays Atlanta made on THIRD DOWN. Roddy White catching clutch passes, Vick looking off his receivers, offensive line (sans Lehr and his ‘roids) giving him protection, and there you go.

That being said, someone mentioned earlier that now Dunn/Norwood becomes and even greater threat because defenses are honest to the pass. I don’t think Knapp will pull in the reigns and change anything at this point.

Another point was that I loved how they showed Hall & Ocho Cinco kneeling in prayer after the game. I hope people will take a look at that and realize that there are more important things than the trash talk, teach that to your kids, parents….

….now back to Vick. Remember when he said in the post game interview with Bob Holzman “be careful what you wish for”. Critics of Vick often wished he would become a passer, we could be seeing the beginning of that. Avoid letting Detroit become a trap game and Atlanta will be fine, especially after the defense becomes healthy once again.

NYC,

I understand you, but the Broncos had a better team than the Falcons during those stints. I can run down the facts, but I just do not want to type them all. Also, remember that the Falcons went to the NFC Championship game in Vick’s 1st full season as QB.

Now, Elway has accomplished more than Vick during his 6 years, and I am not saying that Vick is the same or better than Elway. All I am saying is that Vick’s career does mirror that of Elway. Also, Vick may have a stronger arm and he is definitely faster than Elway (of course.)

So Vick has the potential to be better than Elway, career-to-career. If Vick continues to show passing prowess and win games the way he is doing right now, Vick can probably win more Super Bowls. But it is a MAYBE…

Oh, and Vick’s no Steve Young, Chris. Steve Young was a great improvisor, but he simply did not have the strength nor athletic ability that Vick has… not even close. Now Elway had a strong arm, fast legs, and was elusive. Elway also had some hiccups in his road to greatness. Elway is a much better comparison to Vick’s skills and potential than Steve Young.

By the way, Vince Young is young, but that guy is the truth. He is going to be great in about 3 years.

NYC,

Correct me if I’m wrong on this, but I think what Bradley was saying was that in terms of talent, not accomplishments, is Vick better than Elway. One of the reasons I’m such a Vick fan is because I grew up rooting for Elway. Elway possessed those intangibles that you can’t measure with a stopwatch, I believe the same goes for Vick. Intangibles that lead to wins. I think Bradley was saying that Vick has a stronger arm and runs faster than Elway. I think Elway is the greatest QB of all (yes better than Montana and the system he was a benefactor of) and eventually he realized that he wasn’t going to win a title without help. This is what will take Vick to the championship level. We all know he has the talent, but now he knows he has to be a leader and think as one. Early in Elway’s career as Mo stated to accurately, he was known as a runner who happened to pass. He accomplished a lot early as well, and he learned that in order to overcome that stigma of never winning the big one he had to become more of a leader and utilize his complete game. Once that happened he won Super Bowls (that second one was in large part thanks to Eugene Robinson, but that’s sour grapes talking).

Is Vick better than Elway career wise? Not now, maybe one day, he’s still only 26. In terms of being a faster runner or a stronger arm? I’d say yes.

One more note to all of Vick’s critics, I respect anyone willing to admit they were wrong about Vick. I don’t think they were saying how he couldn’t play QB, all of us Vick fans were waiting for the consistency to come in his game. If he stays consistent, Atlanta becomes an elite team.

I was very impressed with Mike Vick for the second consecutive week in a row. It’s one thing to beat the world champions and throw for 4 td passes; its another to beat the Cincinnati Bengals and throw 3 td passes for two consecutive games. Mike Vick, in case you didn’t notice, has equalled the performance of the Great Peyton Manning over the past two weeks. Vick and Peyton have both thrown for 7 td passes over the last 2 games. I bet the fans of Atlanta didn’t think that Vick was going to perform on the same level as Peyton at any time in his career. What we’re seeing from Michael Vick is a quarterback mature and emerge as a legitimate field general. I was also impressed with Roddy White and his performance on Sunday. Roddy caught all catchable passes that were thrown in his direction and his catches were clutch all the way. It was a total team effort on Sunday. The entire receiving core stepped up and looked fabulous. I knew all along that if the Falcons were ever going to compete with the really good teams in the league and the high-scoring offenses, then the Falcons HAD to eventually throw the ball successfully and they are doing just that. I know I am getting ahead of myself, but if the Falcons were to face the Indianapolis Colts in the superbowl, Michael Vick would have to perform the way he did on Sunday against the Bengals. Well the great thing about it is that now that Vick is performing well, we will see what Vick is capable of as he is performing at his optimum performance. The Falcons receivers had made Vick look bad in the Giants game, because a lot of Vick’s throws in that game were accurate, but the receiving core let Vick down by dropping those balls. Hopefully, Mike will build on his last two performances, get into a groove and perform consistently every Sunday. If Mike can pull that off, which I know he can and will, the Falcons are in for a treat come January and into early February. The Atlanta Falcons are becomming an NFL super powerhouse and when that happens, they are worthy of playing in a super game—-it’s called the SUPERBOWL!!!!

Now, I do have to ask you: is this surge of great play from Vick a matter of Vick getting a light turned on and all of a sudden start playing well, or was it a matter of the playing potential and willingness was always there but the offensive schemes and plans was putting Vick at a disadvantage and caused him to look less than stellar?

Now I am of the school that Vick always had the potential and the wherewithall to do what he is has been doing the last two weeks. I blamed Knapp for the failures in the offense. I saw Vick as a victim of an offensive scheme that didn’t bode well with his skills and placed him in vicarious positions.

Now there were some who felt that Vick was just playing horribly and was a horrible QB… that we should have started Schaub and lined Vick up as a WR or RB. They saw the inaccuracies as Vick’s fault. They thought that Vick wasn’t smart enough to be a QB in this league. Remember?

See, I see the changes in Vick’s performance as a change in the Offensive Scheme. We pass on first down. we move the pocket. We pass first and run second. We are blocking better. The drop passes are fewer.

So that’s why I personally believe it was unfair then and is unfair now to blame Vick for those two losses. It did not bring out smart fans, in my opinion. It brought out a lynch mob, trying to kill Vick’s future career with many of us believing that it was merely due to the fact that he was black. Why the racial issue? Because there were many other QBs that was doing worse and had worse win-loss records that did not have to hear smack about him being not smart enough to play, or that he is playing the wrong position.

In short, I hope this settles the whole “Vick shouldn’t be a QB” rant. I thought that this time brought out the worst in all of us from a racial perspective. We had blatant racism from one side and extreme hypersensitivity from the other side (I’m African-American, just in case you want to know.)

I hope this whole mess is behind us. But I disagree that this was merely about disatisfaction about poor play. If that was the case, then we would have hammered the people who dropped the balls and who refused to block and not always on the one whose balls were dropped and was tackled behind the line of scrimmage trying desperately to make a play.

This is merely my opinion, and fully open to debate.

I have been critical of Vick in the past and deservedly so. He has not been an accurate passer, and didn’t seem to understand the offense very well. Vick plays in the most scrutinized position on the team. Criticism is part of playing the position. Every quarterback who has ever played the position for any length of time has been criticized. I don’t think critics of other quarterbacks around the league have been classified as haters. The Vick apologists are esthetic from the past two games as well they should be. You guys have been in his corner from the beginning. It seems like the light has came on and he now understands how to be a quarterback. I hope he continues to play the way he has the past two weeks. I am critical of him when he plays poorly and at the same time I give him credit when he plays well. The past two weeks Vick deserves a lot of credit.

Kelvin,

I hope both Vick fans and critics read this post and realize that you can call out Vick with rational and intelligent thought. That’s exactly the way it should be. I’m a Vick fan through and through, and he does play the most glamorous (and scrutinized) position in sports. If he does poorly, criticize his play. If he does well, give him credit. However, too many people get into this whole “oh he’ll never get it” mentality and then bring up asinine reasons for saying so. That is what I don’t understand. That being said, I think he was truly humbled after the Giants game and decided it was time to prove to HIMSELF that he could get the job done. Sometimes you have to take charge of a situation until waiting for someone else to do so. If the coaches couldn’t do it, then he had to, and I for one am glad that he did.

Good break down Mo. I totally agree with you. And honestly I kind of feel for Nap/Mora (just a little). I mean to have a QB with a rocket for a arm and sub 4.4 speed although is a god-send but I know they don’t get a lot of sleep at night trying to figure out ways to maximize his talents. We may think it should be easy from the outside looking in but I wouldn’t be so quick to judge. By the way to all you complainers before Vick hit town “excluding 1998 SuperBowl season” where was the Atlanta Falcons organization. It’s not like we have a rich winning tradition or anything before 2001. We’ve enjoyed more winning since Vick came into the league than ever before. So quite complaining and just enjoy the W’s

I have watched the Falcons since the 60`s. I now watch because of Mike…win or lose.
So does most other fans. Now,Mike uses his unique talents wisely like, not taking an unncessary hit on sacks, getting out of bounds timely, throwing the ball away instead of forcing it…etc. He is a more mature player with the scope of the game plan and his performance for the teams success. No matter what happens going forward, He is more fun to watch than ever.

Hey Kelvin! Your critique is unwarranted. For one, do you really believe that just all of a sudden Vick gets it. That all of a sudden over a weeks period that he now understands the game and he didn’t befor the Pitts game. C’mon dude. Do you believe that all of a sudden that the guys a accurate passer over night. I know your smarter than that. It’s very simple, you give a superior athelete time he will do exactly what Vick has done the past two weeks. You put the guy in a position to succeed he will. The guy has an arm like Elway, speed like Prime Time, you have to know that it was simply the offensive scheme. It’s just that simple. Now yes we will have our bad games. Vick will not be perfect all the time. But if our coaching staff schemes on par with the better coaching staffs in the league, with the atheletes that we have, this team will make a lot of noise this year and beyond. Hey I’m not dissing anyone just sharing my opinion

Hey, Mo. I agree that the the Vick bashing in the past was racial. It’s always been like that. From Fritz Pollard to Vince Young, Black QB’s have always been scrutinized by the media, and the general public because they really don’t want to see a Black QB succeed. It’s their worst nightmare. Since the Qb is the most decorated and recognized position in the sport. It’s like that in business as well. To set the record, I am not prejudice, my favorite QB of all-time is Joe Montana and I don’t have to tell you what color he is. That being said, a lot of people do not realize the scrutiny that black Qbs have to deal with for their whole careers , especially in the NFL. This is because Europeans know that if Vick succeeds it will open the door for more Black QBs to enter the league without fear of being converted to WR, KR, PR, DB, or RB’s. Vicks success would set a new standard for QBs. This goes for Donavan Mcnab as well. And for all of you on this board who want to compare Mike Vick to the John Elways and Steve Youngs, you can stop it right now, because you can’t even compare Mike Vick to them other than they played the same position. That only QB From the past(correct me if I am wrong) that even resembles Mike Vick is Randall Cunningham. Yeah people will argue that Steve young was a good Passer and runner, but he didn’t have half the athletic ability that Vick has so you can’t even put them in r=the same category.

Once again it was a great win but that defense scares me. I just hope they don’t take Detroit lightly or it will this years version of the Green Bay game from a year ago. The offense did everything they could in that game to win but that sorry defense couldn’t hold a lead. For three straight weeks the defense has blowed a lead. I understand the defense can’t be perfect but they have to tighten up. If they continue to play this way this team won’t make it far in the playoffs.I hope they don’t let Lehr take his starting job back when his suspension is over. I hope they bench Webster. Where is Hartwell? The guy is doing nothing. I realize he is probably still rusty but why sit Demario after he has been playing well but won’t sit Webster and he has been horrible for the last 3 years. Once again don’t take Detroit lightly I don’t want another repeat of the Green Bay game last year where Bret Favre looked 20 again and Godu looked like Jim Brown.

A great day for the offensive line in protecting Vick. One of the best performances I have seen in a long time. Vick was patient and his feet were not dancing when he was in the pocket!! Coaching staff should have some schemes to help out Jason Webster. He looked helpless and it showed on his face. Please help.

Mo & Ryder…Thank you both for your arguments. Greedy, well…there’s still hope for you I think LOL.

To everyone else, I LOVE Michael Vick. I’m just saying, talent alone is not going to win you any Superbowls (See Dan Marino) Leadership & heart are equally as important. I come from a town that has one many championships, and I can tell you 1st hand, it ain’t all about talent.

One of the instructive things about traveling to Falcons’ games is to see how Vick is received in opposing cities. For all the flak he gets in this town, he’s invariably treated as a Big Deal — a Shaq, a Clemens, a Tiger Woods — on the road. And some of his greatest performances, perhaps not coincidentally, have come away from the Georgia Dome.

I have read these blogs for a long time without posting but I have to put my two cents in. First, Coach Mora needs to demote J. Web for J. Will and hopefully that will motivate him to increase his play i.e Roddy White. It is very hard for an injured corner who is mostly on an island to cover as long as our corners do because of our front 4 not getting enough pressure to the quarterback, (Remember the Carolina Game) but it is another thing when you can’t come out of your breaks on outs, hitches, or dig routes. These are routes that he has been burnt on because he plays off so far to try and take a peak into the backfield to help come out of his break. (Which is not working) As many of you have stated, Jimmy Williams can’t do any worse than Jason Webster and we have D. Hall on the other side. Roll safety coverage to his side and play pressure coverage since J. Will is the biggest corner we have.

With regards to Vick, I have always been a Vick fan and supporter and I have read alot of stupid comments on the AJC blogs about dumbing the offense for Vick or put him at wideout and so forth but I will step out on a limb and state that there is some fault sitting at Vick’s feet.

If he is the leader of this team, (not just the offense) and it took him this long to speak his mind about the play calling and receivers, he is part of the blame. He has to be the voice of the team if he is the appointed leader that everyone in the locker room states. He has been a yes man for this organization and it is a pity that he had to take this much crap from so many people before he spoke his mind and got results.

And before any of you think that I am a Vick Hater, I grew up in the same area he did and knew him when he was younger. Other than that, I have adopted the Falcons since 1997 and I will continue to be a huge fan. Talk football!

Jason Webster needs to play nickelback so that he can play in the space that he enjoys so much. He can’t cut it as a corner playing at least ten yards off of the receiver and if Mora wants to use the excuse that Webster is not a speed guy but a physical guy then he needs to switch him to safety or devise a scheme that has him jam and harrass receivers at the line of scrimmage and give him help deep, otherwise, he needs to be a nickel or dime corner.

Hey I donr know if Jim Mora reads any of these blogs ,man you should, jason webster will give up 3 TD’s each game, he’s slow ,fractured foot and gives to much cushion on every play, wonder why, thats the D weakest link and every team has picked up on it, put J william in and let him grow with the defense, you got webster to tutor from the side line along with the defeses coaches and the other guys to help him make the right reads, and just as soon as he get his feet underhim , troulble for the league. john take your time and get well we will need you in the playoffs, and harwell step up your game brother, get mean ,tough and nasty so the other team will know you are there.

fellows, the next LT, R.Lott, Joe Green , D.Green,J Rice , D.Pearson. with what you have these are the spots needed to be filled on the falcon roaster. Apply each SUNDAY to fill all vacancies.

I still have a serious problem with Donatell. He always starts the game playing his favorite sorry zone DEF and won’t change before the 2nd half. Opposing QB’s, especially in the last 2 games, have had player of the week stats in those 1st halves. Only after absolute necessity does he go to a pressure/blitzing DEF, and the results have so far been positive.

Most seem to forget that Vick executed some of the best two minute drills under Dan Reeves, that he was’nt just a running qb when he entered the league. I am happy to see him finally get to remind his many doubters that he was and is a complete qb. Once the defense gets back on track this team will be a menance in this league. Go Falcons!
