Richt worried about wins, not style
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Athens — There’s the tiniest edge in Mark Richt’s voice, and this qualifies as news. The famously serene coach is suddenly being asked to defend his unbeaten team, and an unvarnished question like this — “Are you guys any good?” — can ruffle anyone.
“We’re good enough to win five games,” says Richt, by way of an almost-heated response. “There’s definitely some merit to that.”
Point taken. But how his Bulldogs have won their last two games has cast doubt on their No. 10 ranking as they ready to play Tennessee Saturday night. Georgia didn’t score a first-half point against lightweights Colorado and Ole Miss. Georgia is ranked 89th in total offense among 119 Division I-A teams. Georgia is about to start its third different quarterback in 15 days. Is Georgia even half the team its record and its rating suggest?
Richt votes in the coaches’ poll but won’t disclose exactly where he put his team this week. Then, smiling: “It’s right there where everybody else has us.” We should not, however, take that as a full-blown endorsement.
“If you’d asked me before the season how I’d feel if we were 5-0, I’d have said, ‘Pretty stinking good.’ But have we progressed like I’d hoped? I’d have to say no.”
Some of this, Richt concedes, could be a function of trying to play too many people. With five games gone, Georgia has yet to settle on a No. 1 quarterback, a No. 1 tailback or a No. 1 wide receiver. “It’s hard to be a consistent football team when you’re constantly changing parts,” he says.
To be fair, senior quarterback Joe Tereshinksi hurt his ankle against South Carolina and missed the next three games, leaving the position to freshmen Matthew Stafford and Joe Cox. All three quarterbacks’ performance has been diminished by the receivers’ penchant for dropping passes. Says Richt, wryly: “It’s possible I’d be settled on a receiver if I knew who to settle with.”
With Tennessee in town and a vital SEC East game in the balance, look for Richt to err on the side of continuity. Look for Kregg Lumpkin to get most of the carries. Look for Tereshinski, who’s healthy again, to get nearly all the snaps unless a fourth-quarter rally is needed. “I like what Joe T is doing [in practice]. He’s a very good leader, and we need that. He may be some really good medicine.”
Richt admits the Bulldogs’ sense of self isn’t what you’d expect from an undefeated aggregation: “I wouldn’t say we’re an overconfident football team right now.” But he bristles at the notion that Georgia has worked nearly half its regular season without a real test. “We have been tested,” he says, his voice rising slightly. “No one wants to admit that we should have been tested, but we have withstood some very stressful games, and we’ve won them. Now, is that going to be good enough [against Tennessee]? I don’t know the answer.”
The Bulldogs have won 49 of their last 58 games, proof they don’t shrink from challenges. That glittering track record is, as Richt well knows, the reason this team has been subjected to such scrutiny over consecutive close calls. He recounts a conversation he had this week with his wife Katharyn. (“The water girl,” Richt calls her, referring to her game-day duties.)
“I said, ‘Honey, we’ve gotten to the point where everyone wants some style points.’ When we first got here [in 2001], everybody was just happy to win. Now expectations have gotten to the point where people expect us to win and to look good doing it.”
Before anyone reads this as a slap at Bulldog Nation, let the record state that Richt has those same expectations. He knows he has built a formidable program. He expects it to act the part. Recent performances to the contrary, he expects Georgia to play like Georgia Saturday night.

Richt is the best coach in the SEC in my opinion and there are some great coaches. We have come a long way since the Goff and Donnan years. When we expect to win 10-11 games a year that says something. I dont care if we win the rest of the games 2-0—a win is a win. It looks to be a great game Sat night and I think UGA will show up and play well. We will see in 24 hours. GO DAWGS!

Let’s just hope the same Georgia shows up saturday night that BEAT the vols last year! Not the old teams with Goff & Donnan at the controls. I will just take a win any way we get one, style or no style. These days Coach Richt has given us a reason to believe we can win these games. Go Dawgs!

Coach is a little testy? Now that’s a GOOD SIGN, MAYBE THE BEST SIGN i’VE SEEN THIS YEAR! I can understand why because some things have happen that nobody expected including him. If he let’s it rip, which I think he will, then they’ll play like the “Hell bent for leather Dawgs” they can be and win the game. I love him being a little mad because maybe they’ll come out blowing & going!

These young men who wear the RED & BLACK these days do it with a lot of pride, coach Richt has alot to do with that. I can’t remember when the last time UGA did not show up and play hard agaisnt a top team. These guys are proud to be BULLDOGS and they will show up in style saturday night and will play hard and will BEAT the DARN vols and make it 6 out of 7 years. We own ya Tennessee and don’t forget it! Everyone sounds real confident about a team that just lost its great kicker and just barely beat two awful teams over the past two weeks…let’s not get too excited just yet. I hope I’m wrong but I see Georgia losing this one by double digits. 21-10 or something like that.

Richt has earned every accolade he has received. Nothing was given to him on a silver platter. He expects the tough querstions and gives honest answers. what more can one ask of a head coach?
Win or lose tomorrow night the University of Georgia has one of the very elite coaches in America at the helm. Life could not be better in the Classic City.

Richt ‘expects’ it.
Mutt fans drink that kool aid and are delusional by it.
I can’t wait for the forthcoming meltdown on the muttvent, harsh articles this week in the AUC, and the loud THUMP when half of the ‘necks in this state collectively jump off the bandwagon after Tennessee wins by more than 7 points tomorrow night!
I hope the bank in Athens will be open on Sunday, many of you will want to cash in that REALITY CHECK given out around 11:30pm on Saturday!

Richt is right to point out that his inconsistency to figure out who his starters are this year has translated into inconsistent offensive play (no pun intended). I have never though he was an offensive mastermind. His play calling is predictable and often dreadful and time management has hurt the Dawgs in more than a couple close games. With that said, he certainly possesses a lot of intangibles that most other coaches don’t have, being a class act for one. I have griped many times about MR but don’t really know of another coach out there that I would want to take his place. He just needs to settle on who his best players are and get on with the season. Go Dawgs!

A lot of Dawg haters are going to be really sad tomorrow night about 11:00pm. UGA does not lose bog games at home. If Georgia scores first it will be a blowout as the pumpkins realize we ain’t Air Force, Marshall, Memphis or some glorified California school that would be lucky to go 6-6 in the SEC.

This is why coaches leave programs. Constant media/fan hounding when the team isn’t perfect. If CMR ever leaves UGA, this’ll be why.

Wouldn’t that be the same everywhere a coach goes? Why leave one school because of media/fan hounding? That would just leave you open to more hounding at your new destination (jackals smell blood and will chase the wounded prey).
I’m sure that CMR expects a certain amount of whining from the fans. I doubt that he would leave the school unless the fanbase leaves the Dawgs…

You got beat by freshmen. How’s your freshmen doing? Oh, and how’s that kicker? Did he trip over the tee in practice?

Craig: UGA has owned the VOLS this century. Tenn has won (1) game out of last SIX. I’m sure the VOL fans are upset because ya can’t beat the Gators or the Dawgs. In fact Tenn has not been in the SEC championship picture in 8 years (just about a decade). Also, the rumor is Kregg Lumpkin is being fit for hobnailed cleats for that TENN defense. Tenn. is going to pick on our “DB” from the get go. That’s going to be the big problem because we’ll end up in a shoot out and that doesn’t favor us. To say that I’m glad MR is mad and to hope that’ll carry over to the team isn’t putting MR down, NO, it’s just hopeing the fire down below will explode. If so we win.Vols will try running dtraight up the gut because we’ve not been very strong between the tackles. This is going to be a test of our Dawgs. I doubt that the Dawgs are smply going to roll over and die because the Vols are coming to town. Tennessee is a better team right now, but the better team does not always win in college football. Georgia was the better team when Tennessee came to town in 2004, and the Vols won. Tennessee was the better team in Richt’s first season, and Georgia won. This Georgia team has talent; it just lacks leadership and direction. Hopefully, that leadership and direction will be distilled from the actions of its senior quarterback, who has been waiting for tonight his entire life.

I love Coach Richt but he has had a problem making a call and staying with it, I still think he would have a national crown had he not put Shockly in over Green in the first Quarter of the Fla game the year that, that was our loss . DJ threw a Int,Fla scored a TD and Green never got his game back after leading a TD drive to start the game.I always Thought that deal with Green\DJ hurt them both.Green always wondered was he going to be pulled the next drive and DJ was like a pinch hitter coming in cold with 1 shot at doing somthin. There is a reason coaches dont like a 2 QB offence it never allows either QB to really beleive in themselves.

No one is giving these boys much respect…..great opportunity for motivation.
When no one is giving you respect, there is only one way to get it…….go out and TAKE IT.

The half dozen or so bloggers here are betting with their hearts instead of their brains. Even Richt doesn’t believe his lofty ranking. Before the season started people had UGA with at least three losses this year. Vegas who does this for a living has the Dawgs loosing at home to a lower ranked team. When a team like Colorado who gets beat convincingly by unranked teams comes into Athens and takes the game to late in the fourth quarter you have to wonder who this UGA team is. It’s a lot easier to build up wins for your program when your overall competition up to this point has a loosing record. The truth will come out today. Tenn 24 UGA 10 Before you bash me give your prediction and we’ll compare notes tomorrow.

Richt is becoming a big a crybady as his mentor PO-MOUTH BOWDEN. If he loses to Tennessee, Miami or FreeshoesU both need coaches. Richt can hardly win the small games not less the big one’s (FLORIDA). He simply cannot motivate his players and does not have a killer instinct. This week’s excuse is the kicker got hurt. I understand Nick Saban will be available for 2007!

Regardless of the personel, the offense has been suspect all 6 years. Richt should promote Mike Bobo to OC and let him call the plays. Have you ever noticed how many points the D has surrendered in the losses the last 6 years. Georgia gives up 16 and 14 and still loses to Florida. Drop the leash Mark, you will win NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS with the right offensive stratagist. Neil Callaway is not, Mike Bobo is.

DawgsBlow alleged that I was a drunken, uneducated Georgia redneck. Now he is trying to figure out what “levy ad hominem attacks” means. Yes, DawgBlow, we teach Latin at UGA while UT is attempting, in vain, to teach English.

Taking a slogan, modifying it, and making it my own:
Saturday night in Sanford Stadium or any other stadium where the Bulldogs happen to be is OWNED by the boys in red and black.
And if you aint down with that, I got two words for ya!…… GO DAWGS!!!!!

Attn “Doggonegadawgturd” If all the UGA fans on here were not spouting so much garbage, I would not be firing back so much. Face facts dude..UGA has not played anyone with a winning record. Cal, Air Force, UF, & Memphis all have winning records. UGA pulled the last 2 games out of their a$$. Don’t give me that worn-out phrase..”UGA always plays up or down to their opponents” Bulls**t! Tonight Smokey will be hiking his leg on UGA..that is if UGA will come out of his iced-down doghouse long enough!! Vols win EASILY!!

Hey U T Fans. It was just last year that you actually stunk. CMR and the dawgs remain humble and win ten games a year not to mention appearing in the SEC big one often. Stranger things have happened should Ga win today-but I would love to see how the fans of Mr.Rotund Fulmer would react if he drops a couple more games or cant get back to the big one in the next few years. Mince your words and beat the Dawgs now cuz this young team is supposed to be rebuilding this year. Talk Tenn. trash if youd like so when we come back to whip you again in Tennessee it wil be even sweeter.

Do you really want to know what we expect at the North Ave. trade school? We expect to kick UGA’s butt into a Christmas time bowl when the two teams meet in the final regular season game.

DawgsBlow: If history is our teacher UGA has kicked UT’s A$$ five of the last six times. You have done this and that but you ain’t been ‘tween the hedges yet. “And your little dog too!” UGA gonna have Smokey in a death grip tonite! Then you can crawl back into mediocrity.

Hey Jawjatek..instead of kicking the pups into a Christmas time bowl..how about just kicking them so badly they won’t even make the Music City Bowl? Tech will beat UGA worse than UT will tonight..going to be FUN FUN FUN!!

Vols lose because their fans SUCK, period. They have to be the most classless bunch in history. At least I can share a taxi to the Landing with a Gator fan without all the trash talk that flows from the mouths of Tennessee fans. You guys are already out of the race for the SEC championship with that HOME LOSS to Florida. Quit talking crap about our schedule especially since mighty Air Force would have beated you if they would have kicked the extra point instead of going for two. Ainge just throws the ball up for grabs and you guys are lucky that it’s been against weak DB’s which won’t be the case tonight. Bring your A game and be prepared to eat crow tomorrow. Big Dawgs Gonna Eat tonight.

Hey Craigs a dope, do you really want to start comparing our record against Fl. vs yours. Over the last 4 years we’re 2-2 against the gaytors. In fact over the last 10 years Fla. is the only team TN doesn’t have a winning record against. How is UGA’s record the last 10 years over Auburn, Fla, or UT. You bringing up Fla is just as classless as the Cal.band doing the Gator Chomp in Neyland Stadium while UT was beating their a@#es by 5 touchdowns

Hey UH CN..all Dog fans want to live in the past. They cannot admit their teams SUCKS this year. The last 2 games should have been in the “L” column. Your luck has run out doggies. They cannot help it though since most of them are inbred..so don’t be too harsh on them!

Hey Vols: When we look at UT we don’t see any Reggie Whites, Peytons Mannings, Jamal Lewis’, Peerlees Prices, and all those types of players that made UT great in the past. Unfortunately that type of talent is now at UGA, and has been for some time now. Tonite we see them light up the Vols.

Here is the way I see it. If things stay status quo for the Dawgs, this will be a close game. Status quo being dropped passes, mediocre running game and a DOMINANT Defense. I understand that UT has a good QB and a fair running game. But not so good that they will destroy a UGA Defense that has only allowed, now get this, 34 points ALL YEAR. Only Three touchdowns scored against in 5 games. Two Shutouts, one being against another SEC team.
Now lest imagine a team that comes out with a little more focus and our receivers catch the balls that they have been dropping. Drives stay alive. Running game opens up and the Defense does it’s normal thing and stays dominant. Now does that paint a better picture? In my eyes it does. The last 2 weeks were an aborition of what this UGA team REALLY is. Look out Tennessee, look out SEC… Here come the REAL DAWGS, starting tonight!
And to anybody that thinks the SEC isn’t the best, toughest, most contested conference in the country, just have a look at the polls on a yearly basis. Always a team in the top 5 at the end of the year. True that we don’t have many National Championship opportunities, but you see if you can bring your team into our conference and go undefeted. But hold on, even if you are able to do that, you still might not get to play for the big title, right Auburn. The SEC is the best out there, Bar-None.

Hey Dawg fans, quit being so Larry Munson like. Think positive for a change. Everyone wants to say we haven’t played anyone. Well Colorado and Ole Miss are good teams. The same folks who called the Buffs and the Rebs bad would have put Arkansas in the same boat but they just beat Auburn 27 to 10. As I have stated before, nothing matters except who is next. Your record don’t matter, who you played don’t matter and your lifetime record against a foe doesn’t matter. All that matters is UGA vs Tenn at 7:30 PM tonight and I for one believe in the Dawgs and their chances for victory tonight. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DAWGSSSSSSSS, SIC EM, WOOF, WOOF, MF, WOOF.

Oh, sorry about the typo…..I was going to work, something most of you “Tennesseans” know nothing about. I know, I know, it’s hard getting a job with a criminal record. Hey get rid of the orange jump suit! Dawgs will win. And I don’t want to hear the excuses tomorrow. After all it will be the “in the past”. SIC ‘EM!!!

Hey Penned-up Dawgturd..by the past I meant years..not a couple weeks Bozo! The present would equate to this season..you know 2006 Einstein??? Too bad Waffle House would not let you off to watch the game tonight. Of course, you would have had to put some aluminum foil on your TV rabbit ears anyway to get ESPN. And that crack about the orange jumpsuit..did you come up with that all by yourself? Wow..I haven’t heard that one in almost 3 hours!! You must be a UGA gradjiate? Get the h**l out of Tn!

As I was saying, sometimes I wonder why I fight for this country when there are so many jackasses like Dawgsuck. Hey Suck, when you have fought a battle or two in service for you country then you may be on a level high enough to insult me. In the meantime, go look in the mirror, admire that fat gut and cheer for your damm Vols. You dont know crap about me or Penned-Up Dawg so shut your trap. You are the prime example of the most classless fans in the nation, Tenn fans. Enjoy 3rd place in the East, drink another beer and think about exercising something besides your mouth for a change. If you do that then maybe your waist will drop down to a 40 inch one and you will be one of the slimmest Vol fans ever.

Wow, isn’t it amazing how much better an offense can move when the receivers actually catch the ball? Big props to MoMass and Bryant. Also, just stating the obvious but Mikey Henderson is one explosive player. You give him some running room and he’s a lot of fun to watch.
