Identity crisis for Dogs’ offense
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Oxford, Miss. — They’d played nobody, and twice in a row they’ve gotten away with playing like a bunch of nobodies. The Georgia Bulldogs came agonizingly close to losing to a really bad team last week, and they did it again here Saturday night. What happens when they actually face somebody good?
Here it is barely October, and already Georgia is looking like the least impressive 5-0 team in the land if not in the history of football. A week after nearly losing to winless Colorado at home, the Bulldogs came here and spent a half allowing Ole Miss — which had lost consecutive games to basketball schools Missouri, Kentucky and Wake Forest by an aggregate 68 points — to seem the stronger side.
And them, after rousing themselves and mustering 14 points — the same number they’d scored against Colorado — the Bulldogs needed a late Paul Oliver interception to stave off the Rebels. Yeah, Georgia won, but they’re going to have to start playing to their talent level or they’re going to wind up 8-4.
Here it is October, and Georgia has found answers to almost none of its questions. The Bulldogs haven’t settled on a quarterback — of the four in preseason competition, three have started games — and haven’t found a tailback or a receiver or an offensive line. They do have a defense that remains this program’s saving grace, but 14 points won’t beat Auburn or Florida or Georgia Tech, and 14 points probably won’t beat Tennessee.
This might have been the least rousing victory of the Mark Richt era. That the Rebels led only 3-0 at halftime had more to do with their mistakes than any Georgia brilliance. Indeed, the Bulldogs contrived to have two punts blocked in the same half, but they regained possession after the first block due to an Ole Miss holding penalty that changed field position by a staggering 90 yards. And twice the Rebels’ Brent Schaeffer took his team out of field-goal range by getting sacked.
Having slipped so many punches, you’d have figured Georgia would get down to the business of beating a bad team. Astonishingly, the Bulldogs managed just 66 yards and four first downs in the first half. Joe Cox, who saved the day against Colorado and who started Saturday night, presided over three of the first downs. Matthew Stafford, who three weeks ago was being touted as the No. 1 pick in some future NFL draft, couldn’t generate a single one.
And now we’re seeing why Richt’s preseason decision on his quarterbacks was such a hairbreadth thing. The ones who are gifted (Stafford, Cox) really aren’t ready, and the one closest to being ready (the since-injured Joe Tereshinski III) isn’t all that gifted.
To his credit, Stafford worked the entire second half and steered Georgia to both its touchdowns. But the first surge was accomplished without benefit of a completion — Stafford had a key scramble, and Kregg Lumpkin, who should be an every-down back, did almost all the rest — and the second featured only one (Demiko Goodman down the sideline). Yeah, the freshman throws a nice ball, but not many of those balls are getting caught.
Five games in, Georgia hasn’t yet authored a performance that suggests it belongs in the Top 10. That the Bulldogs made it through September unbeaten says less about them than about the level of opposition. And that’s about to change.
Tennessee comes to Sanford Stadium next week, and the Vols have already played two teams (California, Florida) of stature. The nice thing about playing nobodies is that you fluff up your record and your ranking, but a record built on the bodies of nobodies can be fool’s gold.
The Bulldogs approach the season’s midpoint without knowing how good they are. Or how good they aren’t.

excellent article. As i am die hard georgia fan, I am not stupid enough to see that we are going to be a top ten team much longer. At this point, a level head is needed at quarter back much more than talent. I never agreed with with the assesment that Cox or Stafford were ready. This is the SEC not the WAC.
I am really worried about Tennesee now, they took care of a team they were supposed to today, and they are on a roll. The loss to Florida shouldn’t have been one.
If things don’t get turned around in a hurry, we are in for a really long second half of a season.
Go Dawgs!

Yep, halfway through the 3rd I was thinking 8-4 myself.
In regards to the last paragraph, I think we all know how good the dogs aren’t. And the bad thing is that after Vandy beats Old Mrs. next week, they are going to face UGA with visions of a bowl bid dancing in their heads. The Commies thrive on the option and every team in the NCAA knows we don’t have a clue how to stop that.
Never thought I’d be rooting for Joe T. to hurry and get back.

At least we found a reciever in Goodman that can catch the ball. And stayed commited to one back - Lumpkin. Both had 100 yd performances. And both had their best plays when Stafford was in the game. Stafford starts next week. Our D is top notch and can stuff any team in the country.
On O, we just need to stick with the hot players and let them build momentum. All these rotations are killing that. The Vols are a team we have the talent to beat and I think you will see a Coach that stays commited to the players that have pperformed well the past 5 weeks. Sorry MM, Brown, Tershinkle, etc.
We can and will win, just need to stop with the experiments and rotations. Let Lumkin, Goodman, Stafford and the D carry us to the win!!!

Man, I hate Phat Phil, but I think this time next week he’s gonna have a big ole piece of UGA tied to his rear bumper on the way home.
Anybody see this afternoon where he went for the touchdown on the last play of the third period, 4th and goal at the 3, leading 27 to zip. I doubt he’ll show the dawgs any mercy either - and then ya’ll gotta to to J’ville.
Last one leaving Athens, please turn out the lights.

I agree with NYCDawg totally. I was thinking the exact same thing in the first half of this one. Rotating the QB every couple of times with the ball on offense never allows a QB to get into any sort of rythm at all. Richt has got to start sticking with players.

Well Mr. Bradley, it has been brutal.
You sit there and watch and say, please don’t check out of the running play…please.
I think, more than anything else, that this Matthew Stafford showing up his teammates in this game for the 5th game in a row now that he has demonstrated his ability to show emotion and displeasure that a play went no where, is what has to stop.
It is hard enough to play QB in this SEC or against BCS opponents as a True Freshman, but to think with 1 Touchdown Pass in 5 games now, total, that Stafford can hold his hands to his helmet like that one pass is the fault of everyone but himself for not being caught, has got to come to an end.
Every game now, Stafford shows up his teammates.
And, what ?
Expects them to play for him?
We are ranked in the Top 10 and are therefore taking everyone’s best shot, but as well said above by jarrodmon we are as a team, just standing around waiting for a real Coach Richt taught quarterback to come out there on the field and at least not show up his teammates, especially with the ineptitude of Matthew Stafford.
Joe Cox, also a freshman, is waiting for Joe T to come back too.
I’m just amazed that we have no had Blake Barnes throw a pass or two.
He cannot be as bad as what we have seen.
I would not even mind losing; but, showing up your teammates every single game with 1 touchdown pass all season long mid-season now, is beyond my personal ability to sit idly by any longer without full comment on it.
Grow up Matthew Stafford.
4 games ago, Joe T had 1 series that won that game against Steve Spurrier.
5 games later, Joe T has to come back and play lights out against the 1st of 4 Top 18 or so teams in the nation.
Surely, by now, those who said that we must rely on Freshmen this season - have given up that ghost for this season, now…right?
I don’t like how short the games are, then 15 minute delays for replays every two minutes - then, they still get the replays wrong.
Here we are.
No damn good.
It’s sad.
And, I’ll for one, not mince words about it.
We are full of ourselves to think these quarterbacks are ready.
The officials gave us this game.
That was a stinker. When Matthew Stafford fumbled the ball at the goal line, I do give him credit for lining up and quick-counting to get Brannan Southerland in the end zone, for he Matthew Stafford had fumbled that football too.
Clearly.
Give the rebs their touchdown on the 1st blocked punt too at our 4-yard line, for someone was paid off to flip-flop that to instead their 4-yard line on the ensuing punt.
They should be ashamed of themselves.
The officials who gave the game to UGA and our players for having to have them give it to us.
I’d just like to know where all those loud-mouths are and have been who said that Matthew Stafford would be starting by no later than game 4, never to give it up.
For clearly, there will be yet another new Starter next Saturday and it ain’t going to be Matthew Stafford again.
I say, let’s put in Blake Barnes and get a look at him too.
I do not want to lose to Georgia Tech. I have learned to live with losing to Florida. I can even stomach losing to Auburn. And, everyone acts like Phillip Fulmer did not beat us at our house for his only win over Coach Richt.
But, Tech ?
Tell me it’s not true, that there is not one quarterback on this damn football team.
Coach Richt, you had better start putting some quarterback out there whom you have taught something to – your reputation is on the line.
We are totally clueless at Quarterback.

Stafford’s sought after lightning bolt was there for those who professionally grade his game tonight….who knows what’s up with the old and no longer reliable receivers…but it can all be fixed by declaring the all too obvious….Matthew Stafford is the leader, checking to brilliant calls, some dropped by Goodman and some caught by Goodman >>>but I liked Goodman’s and Bryant’s effort…we have a very good first string backfield of Stafford, Lumpkin and Sutherland….Early declaration of Stafford as starter will galvanize the team behind him regardless of the reasons for the lack of “togetherness” thusfar….and one thing’s for darn sure, Tennessee will be very overconfident and more confused about our ability than we are…. Hold the course, Stafford made pro level decisions tonight and really stepped forward….When our receivers start catching just the easy and ordinary ones, forget the difficult catches, we will be awsumb and very unpredictable on the run/pass mixture…Again, the good teams win the bad games and we, a good team, won another bad game….Ainge doesn’t scramble like Schaeffer, so our defense will be more organized and effective than tonight…with Inman hopefully pulling his weight a little better, our run game can be excellent{assuming less dropped passes on the run/pass mix}….SO in summary, bring your butts to Sanford and make a ton of noise, and you will see the talent gell on this team, much to the absolute shock of Tennessee, IF IF IF Coach lets the team know early this week that Matthew Stafford is the QB fo this team, no ifs, ands and buts about it….see ya at 6-0 next week

BuLLdawg - you are an idiot. And you can’t spell or write worth a toot. Your rambling doesnt have any flow and makes NO sense what so ever.
Our terrible offense has nothing to do with the play of our QBs. Come on!?
In the 1st half, backed up on the 18 or so, Stafford threw a pretty pass to MM down the sidline for about 40 yds. In his hands, he dropped it. Please tell me how that is Stafford’s fault?
And what the hell do you mean by “showing up the team?” Do you mean to say that because Stafford is throwing nice balls that our WRs can’t catch it is some how his fault? Please clarify becuase I don’t understand what the hell you are trying to say.

This is a bad Georgia football team. Not underachieving, not mediocre, not unfocused (although they are all o fthese things). The sum total of all of this team’s parts adds up to a big nothing.
The defense, while talented, seems to be ill-prepared for every team they face. It generally takes them a half or so to figure out what they are supposed to do (and, even then, they don’t always do it). The offense has a talent gap at offensive line, a knowledge and experience gap at QB, a perpetual concentration lapse at WR (what the hell is wrong with Mohammed Massaquoi?), and a utilization mismatch at running back (last week, going with Thomas Brown on 4th and short instead of Brannen Southerland; this week, giving Kregg Lumpkin only 13 carries despite his 8 yards per carry average). The whole team has a veritable leadership vacuum, from the head coach on down. The play-calling stinks, the tackling and receiving and blocking are poor (kinda fundamental stuff here), and the seniors don’t seem to be able to motivate their teammates to play with the swagger that their raw talent should afford them by default. This is a p**-poor team right now, and one that will be humiliated by the Vols next Saturday unless it discovers some character and intestinal fortitude during the coming week.

Get a real DC. The sense of ‘game domination’ disappeared when Martinez took over. Martibez is in thus position b/c of his frienship with MR. I’m sure he can coach DBs and is a nice guy, but he seems ‘adjustment challanged’. The OL coach and WR coach also should be replaced. If the national recruiting websites are to be believed, we have the talent, so there has to be a reason….must be coaching. MAybe MR will be in the mood to get proven DC, OL and WR coaches after we are beaten by AU, Fl, TEnn and GT.

When a quarterback points to his receivers and yells at them, looks up the sky in disbelief, hangs his head shaking it from side to side, puts his hands on his helmet and rolls his eyes in the back of his head, jumps up and down in a bobble-head oh no, and specifically directs these actions for 5 consecutive games to his receivers - he is by all accounts showing up his teammates.
When the guy who does this every game for 5 consecutive games has a grand total 1 touchdown pass in 5 combined games with 3 times as many interceptions as he does touchdowns, he is showing his backside.
I’m tired of it.
I have commented on it each time after each of the 5 games.
There is no way a freshman quarterback is ready to play quarterback on this team.
There is nothing wrong with Georgia’s Junkyard Dawg Defense Number 1 in the United States of America : http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/natlRank.jsp?year=2006&div=4&rpt=IA_teamscordef&site=org
However, there are 99 Quarterbacks in America with a better Quarterback Rating than Matthew Stafford :

The reason UGA is in the top ten is year over year respect for Marks Richt’s program. Well now the ice cream social part of his schedule is officially done. At the beginning of the season most experts had them picked for three losses starting with Tennessee. I think you have to add Georgia Tech to that list for a fourth loss. Very few programs are able to sustain one or two loss seasons prior to bowl games. UGA will be a powerhouse again next year.

Bulldawg were you even at the game? I watched it and didn’t see all this outrageous behavior from Stafford. And did he actually play in all five games? You seem to have a real hard on for Matt. You should chill and buy some mens magazines to take your mind off Stafford.
I DID see recievers drop lots of passes. Somebody needs to get in their face. This dog team offense needs to step up.
Say what you will about the defense but the referees played better D then the Dawgs. They screwed Miss on that first blocked punt. Score should have been 10-0 at the half. Who knew the referees made the game saving play in the first half!

What we need is tackleing 101, special teams, discipline, to stop reading who good we are (?), bring back Hines Ward, etc, etc, etc, etc. God help us next week, or it will be BAD…If we had Florida’s schedule we wouldn’t win 4 games…

If you don’t know Mike, what are you doing discussing his 1 TD pass in 5 combined games he has played in all 5 of so far with now the lame excuse that he didn’t even play in the 5 games.
He did, but not well for the 5th consecutive game.
Want to try for 6 with his NCAA Quarterback Rating 100 points less than Erik Ainge?
This freshman quarterback experiment, has not gone well for Coach Richt.
Back to 5th-year seniors as Starters : That seems to work a whole lot better.

What confused me was why Richt continued to change out the D-line? What is he trying to figure out there? Every time the brought in the 2-string, OleMiss run it down your throats. Then, as soon as the first team came back out, the Rebels fell apart. Couldn’t he see that - he kept the Rebels in the game. A win’s a win dawgs, but if your coach doesn’t start showing more confidence in his starters, you’re going to be having a rough time of it in the month of October. I wish y’all would win every game (but one), but I just don’t see it happening with this current game plan.

When your recruiting doesn’t average Number 54 in the nation as Georgia Tech’s has for 5 consecutive seasons to make up this year’s roster with redshirts, but top 5 in the nation instead; you have 2nd team players who can play - and, therefore you play them.
Tech doesn’t.
That game plan is just fine, but the players cannot be freshman quarterbacks, or they have as many TD passes as they have interceptions.
Here is Reggie Ball’s numbers for his career :
http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/playerDetail.jsp?yr=2006&org=255&player=1
46 touchdown passes and 46 interceptions.
Our freshman quarterbacks are at least that good.
Stick to the stinking ACC, dead last of all BCS conferences in out-of-conference games again this season (except for the Big XII).

Bradley, you are getting to be almost as bad as Terrence Moore. Georgia has found a running back(Lumpkin, 13 carries for 101). And 14 points will beat Tech, or are you saying that Notre Dame’s defense is better than Georgia’s? And the offense sputters because it is being run by a freshman and a red-shirt freshman. When Joe T. III returns and gets a little playing time, it will smooth out. But I do expect Dawgs to lose next week to Tennessee before everything starts to fall correctly in place.

It was Ole Miss vs Georgia ESPN2 at 9 last night.I saw Stafford throw some incredible passes, very accurate but very seldom caught. Not because they were thrown too hard. His passes had touch and were very catchable. As far as the emotion shown by Stafford when his passes are dropped , is a normal reaction if you are COMPETING.Richt has got to find some people to consistantly catch the dang ball if any QB is has any chance of succeeding.Fat Phil will be blitzing Stafford so somebody with the receivers has got to step up and catch the ball.Hopefully the smell of all the tailgate food will be a distraction for the fatass staff for UT. That’s just BS War Eagle. Tebow (Tedow?) has as more fumbles than he has rushing TDs.
Florida in their next 3 games plays LSU, Auburn and Georgia - all 3 Top 10 Teams - but, Georgia hasn’t played the good teams on our schedule of Tech, Auburn and Tennessee, so we don’t know how good Matthew Stafford isn’t ?

I don’t mean to criticize, but maybe Richt needs to name some starters. It’s nice that the players stick up for each other, but they’re not picking up any momentum with this musical chairs stunt. It’s like being at a table with four beautiful women and not knowing who to chose. After the Greene, Shockley fiasco, one would think he’d learned from that. This team is definitely struggling, maybe they need some definitive starters.

There is no damn excuse for showing up your teammates when you have thrown passes in 5 consecutive games and have to show for it 3 interceptions, 4 fumbles, and 1 touchdown pass.

The Dawgs want get any better offensivly until the coach makes a decision about who is the number one man at quarterback and at running back. When this is settled which needs to happen NOW , then perhaps they can gain some condinuity and confidence on the offensive side of the ball.

“I don’t mean to criticize, but maybe Richt needs to name some starters. It’s nice that the players stick up for each other, but they’re not picking up any momentum with this musical chairs stunt. It’s like being at a table with four beautiful women and not knowing who to chose. After the Greene, Shockley fiasco, one would think he’d learned from that. This team is definitely struggling, maybe they need some definitive starters.”
What the hell does that mean, the Greene Shockley fiasco ?
The way I recall it David Greene’s class went 42-10 and DJ Shockley’s class went 44-9.
DG’s senior class in their time here 2001-2004 : 42-10 : http://football.stassen.com/cgi-bin/records/calc-wp.pl?start=2001&end=2004&rpct=1&min=1&ss=on&se=on&c1a=on&pt=on&by=Wins
DJ’s senior class in their time here 2002-2005 : 44-9 : http://football.stassen.com/cgi-bin/records/calc-wp.pl?start=2002&end=2005&rpct=1&min=1&ss=on&se=on&c1a=on&pt=on&by=Wins
David Greene’s senior class in their time here at 42-10 was 5th best in the nation and DJ Shockley’s senior class in their time here at 44-9 was 4th best in the nation.
DJ Shockley set the All-Time UGA Season Touchdown Record with 28 Touchdowns last season in 13 games, 4 rushing and 24 passing touchdowns by DJ and Matthew Stafford is now after 5 games 2 Touchdowns, 1 rushing and 1 passing touchdown - for 26 behind DJ’s pace of last year.
There was no fiasco in getting DJ some reps for both to Win The SEC.
The fact is that we have our starting qb injured for 23 days and unable to play.
“Fiasco” heard it all now…
I would love to have such a “fiasco” and so would everyone in the America.

Stafford has suffered an incredible amount of drops. The kids not showing anybody up. I’d slap my helmet too if some ham handed wide receiver dropped another first down or a big play. Stafford, statistics aside, played well.
I’m a lot more concerned about our receivers than our freshman quarterback. They are drive killers. Until they get separation and start holding on to the ball we’re in trouble. As good as Demiko played, at times he really looked like he was battling on a couple of balls. I’m afraid the drops have really gotten inside the receiver’s heads. And I don’t want to hear any carp about Stafford throws it too hard — he has great touch.
Inconsistent offensive line play and WR’s who can’t catch the ball will kill you.

Seem to be quite a few who have seen exactly what I have that Stafford is showing up his teammates.

What kills you, of course, in Top 25 College Football, is Freshmen Quarterbacks - which is why Coach Richt is the only 1 with Freshmen Quarterbacks in the entire Top 25.

Come on guys! Sure, the offense has sputtered but our kids have found a way to win in the last two games. Cox comes in and throws an absolutely perfect pass to get us the win against Colorado. Things are going horrible and the team sucks it up and hangs in there the second half and gets the win against Ole Miss. We are 5-0 and you bet the kids will be giving maximum effort against Tennessee. Are there things that need work…yes….but we will rise up and play hard. Go Dogs!

BuLLdawg— your posts about Stafford are overblown. I’d rather not start a freshman either but you play the cards you’re dealt. If the recievers catch the ball Stafford doesn’t slap his helmet. But is the slapping of the helmet to show up the receivers or frustration at just missing a big play? I suspect it’s the latter.
The whole showing up the other players is a silly, non-issue that you’ve created in your own mind. Instead of faulting the receivers who are blowing the plays you want to point the finger at Stafford.

BullDawg is an idiot. How many times is he going to use the poorly descriptive phrase “showing up his teammates”? Just type exactly what you are trying to say. Obviously, there are problems throughout the team. However, the critical piece to this baffling puzzle is the O-line. Block somebody, and maybe the skill position players have time to make decisions/throw the ball/hit a hole….anything for positive yardage.

You idiots! Do you really think another change in QB will make a difference? We’ve got to have lineman that can block and recievers that can catch but it starts with blocking.GA fans need to quit p** and moaning and act like the fans of a team that is consistantly winning 10 games a year! Quit talking about players leaving and the coach moving on, I’ve been a GA for 37 years and then fans are the worst I’ve ever seen. Bunch of cry baby know it alls. Wake up! We could be 0-5. Go Dawgs!

Well I agree with most of the fans on here that our team has been outplayed the past two weeks. We have a lot of young guys playing and mistakes are being made all over the field. I would just like to remind everyone that we are supposedly in rebuilding mode, just like last year. Georgia is definitely not a top 10 team right now, but there is hope that MR will get things turned around. We are however the reigning SEC CHAMPIONS, a little respect is in order for MR and the Georgia football team.

Yall need to get over the fact that this is not the bulldogs of the past four years. All teams have rebuilding years, even Ohio State had an 8-4 season 3 years. Lay off Mark Richt he alone made UGA football elite not the other way around. You’re not good fans. For the most part you’re obnoxious, arrogant and condesending when talking about “your dawgs” to rival fans, but you trash your own team and coaches when you lose to a big name or play a weak team close. Most teams fans do this, but you are the gold medalists in this category. Here is the truth Dawg fans. Georgia Tech is better than you this year. Auburn is a lot better than you this year. Tennessee will be favored next Saturday. Florida is going to destroy you. The way things are going I wouldn’t chalk up Kentucky and Vandy up as sure wins. In fact, I think you’ll lose one those two games and you don’t have much of an argument to refute that analysis. I’m not trying to bait yall I’m just telling the truth. This is a rebuilding year for Georgia. You all can whine, complain and b*** about your coaches and players all you want, but it’s just a fact that this is an 8-4 level team. That being said Georgia has a lot of great young players and Mark Richt looks to be bringing in another stellar recruiting class. Next year Georgia will be able to fight for 10 wins, but this year is going to cause a lot of Dawg fans frustration and heartache. My advice for you is lay off Mark Richt. You all should be ashamed of yourselves for ripping the man who did what Dooley couldn’t do in his last 5 years and what Goff and Donnan couldn’t do. He has 2 SEC championships and he has made Georgia a national power. If Richt leaves Georgia would instantly become an also ran in the SEC East! He is UGA football and it would serve you all justice if he took the Miami job. Keep bashing Richt if this season goes poorly and see what happens.

For all the dawg fans that bash MR, count your blessings that you have such a good coach. Tech had a great coach in Coach O’Leary a few years ago and we let him get away and have suffered for a few years getting back to where we were. Coach Gailey is a good coach, but he is not quite in the league as Richt and O’Leary. That being said, Tech has a good defensive coordinator and the defense and CJ will carry Tech over Ga this year.

In response to Jacketman- Good observation about changing out the defensive line, but you should know that’s to get the second teamers more experience so when we play Tenn, FL, Auburn and GA Tech. They will be able to help in keeping the first string fresh so they can rush the passer more effectively. This is because of the inconsistency on offense and we have had to rely on the defense to win for us.

I wonder if Dawgs awful offense is due to ultra conservative mentality of the coaches to not allow creativity and boldness. I can never imagine Richt going for a 4 & 5 on opposition’s 40 or something. The pass game is never designed for the receiver to catch and then run for extra yardage.
We weren’t so bad in years. I really dread a serious shipping against more stronger opponents and think I have to take off the Georgia flag off my office cubicle pretty soon.

It is so funny to see so many people talking trash about the Dawgs! I mean, are they that socially inept and frustrated with their own existence to come on and talk trash! It is crazy…Listen, I have been a dawg fan for a long time, and this has been a year that I thought was a rebuilding year. Georgia’s QBs are fine they are just young. Matthew Stafford and Joe Cox have definitely got the skills to be a fantastic winning QB. Alot of people are going to have to swallow their words a couple of years down the road when Stafford and Cox prove them wrong! I am excited to be 5-0. Frustrated with our play but excited. How many programs can have rebuilding years but yet still have winning records. So it is not the Coach, or the QBs, or the WRs, or the O line. We are young and talented and need a rhythm. Once we develop it, probably sooner than later, watch out. The haters have nothing better to do than be haters! Who cares what they think!

Bill Holmes, you have it right! If MR will go with the line up he had to start and play in the 2nd half we’ll beat the Vols. MS DID MAKE SOME PRO LIKE DECISIONS LAST NIGHT. Put MoMass on the bench and play the receivers that caught the ball last night. At least Martinez used the blitz last night. We had mistakes but who didn’t expect that in ‘06? Put Brown in the slot and let’s go!

We will win because of one factor the Sanford Stadium crowd and our head coach. BuLLdawg:
OK, we get it… you don’t like Stafford. I thought he played pretty well. The best of any of your QB’s this year.
He did not show up Momass or anyone else when they dropped his passes. How can any player not get a little frustrated. He put his hands on his helmet in shock and disbelief for a moment when a pass was right there in a tight SEC road game…and its dropped… again, but your “best” Used to be best WR.
Stafford is not a talkative guy, but I like the fact that when Joe Cox came off the sideline at the end of the 2nd quarter, Matt gave him a pat on the helmet and obvious encouragement.
He just isn’t the kind of guy who stands on the bench with a towel hooting and hollering… and that is OK. He made a bad read or two and threw a couple of bad balls, but I thought he played pretty well. 55-60% of his passes should have been caught.
He needs to keep improving, but I think he has played well so far this season and I see a LOT OF POTENTIAL. Lets GATA against TN

The offensive play calling has been horrific. Can someone tell me why would you line up 2TEs, 1 WR, a FB and HB on 2nd and long. How in he!! do you expect to run. The D automatically will put 8-9 in the box. Come on CMR, change up your philosophy. As for Willie Martinez, dude get a frickin clue. Don’t keep running the same scheme, week-in and week-out. Adjust your game plan to your opponent. That damn soft zone crap works until you play teams that can cram the ball down your throat. Put your CBs on an island and tell them to lock those boys down. Oh yeah, this bull crap about the DL opening up holes so that the LBs can make the plays is the dumbest strategy devised. Tell your DL to blow the damn line of scrimmage up.
Finally - - - will CMR get some balls and let Eason go? This guy coaches the receivers down. If I am a top notch WR prospect, the hell with going to UGA. In two years Eason will have me playing like I’m in middle school.

Jimmy: Amen Brother!
We aren’t playing as well as we could or should. Remember the days of Donnan and Goff? We are getting so spoiled under Richt that we are complaining about being 5-0 heading into the tougher games in October. that speaks volumes for our program.
Now… I agree that we have work to do and we don’t win the SEC unless we improve. There is reason for optimism:
Our D is keeping us in every game and there is no reason to think that MS will not continue to improve. Our OL and WR play has to get better and I have full confidence in Calloway. I hope Eason can get it done, but I don’t like what he has produced the past four or five years.

It seems that all the talk is how the QB’s can’t get any rthymn due of course to the logjam of talent. To their credit pass’s have to be caught and blocks need to be made. However the play calling needs to be looked at. In my opinion 3rd and 8 is not the time to hand the ball to brandon. tuff he may be, shifty he is not. Also 4th&4 late in the game when its apparent that our D can’t stop the run, why not go for it. Our receivers have to step up. And if MM doesn’t want to play for Stafford, maybe he would be better suited to ride shotgun on a garbage truck. I sense some team jealously. The kid could be NFL material but seems to have a chip on his shoulder due to the coach’s decision at QB. We have some issue’s that I hope are resolved before we arrive in Athens on the 7th.

Observations on last night’s near fiasco in Oxford.
For the second week in a row this team was not ready to play. We also have a nasty habit of playing to the talent level of the opposition. Instead of truly crushing the teams we should, we allow them to hang around … and hang around … keeping the game much closer than it should be. My hat’s off to Ole Miss for not quitting but our lack of effort had a great deal to do with it. But Ole Miss and Colorado are not in our league talent wise and neither game should have been that close. If Richt and his coaches don’t do a better job of getting the team ready to play Tennessee next week, it could be a long afternoon.
Play calling stinks. Running the ball is crucial to our passing game yet it seems Richt is reluctant consistently run the ball until he finds the passing game isn’t working. You’ve got to run the ball in the SEC to keep opposing defenses honest. If we’d run it more, Richt could possibly reach deeper into his playbook, the boys would score more points, and we’d all have to take fewer Rolaids.
Our receivers are killing us! And I don’t know if it’s Eason or simply a lack of talent. All season we’ve dropped passes that should have been easily caught. And what’s happened to MoMass? Is he hurt? I’m an Athens boy living in Virginia and although I try to keep up with things I don’t remember seeing him on the injured list. If not he needs to step up. Goodman looked great for a couple of plays then disappeared. I did notice that Mikey Henderson was healthy enough for Richt to put in for a few plays. He could definitely be a weapon given his ability. But I think it’s plain to see that getting a couple of big name recruits in this area is a priority.
Even though only one counted, there’s absolutely no excuse for having two blocked punts. We’d better practice our blocking this week. Ole Miss exposed a weakness and if we don’t correct it, other teams are going to try to do the same. We’ve got to get the ball away quicker.
An ugly win is still a win and we’re 5-0 heading into the biggest game of the year thus far. The Tennessee game will go a long way in determining how good these Dawgs really are. If we bring anything less than our A-game, it could get ugly in a hurry.
Even though they’ve bent a little bit the past two games, I think this defense could be one of our best in years. It’s championship caliber now yet still has room for improvement. And if our offense can become just the least bit consistent (see #2) this could be a special season. There’s much to correct but I’m optimistic we’ll get it done. And when the game kicks off on Saturday I’ll be in my chair in front of the tube with my Rolaids cheering them on! Go Dawgs!

Dawg fans, a few things to remember: Richt’s GA teams usually have an early season peak around late Sep or early Oct. In 01, 02, and 03 it was UT, in 04 it was LSU unfortunately followed by a let down to UT the next week and then UT again last year. Richt has a way of having the team ready for the first big test of the season (USC does not count). It will come down to matchups. We have more options out of the back field but no QB-tight end or QB-WR combinations have developed yet. UT will blitz continuously so we must have draws, screens, hot routes ready to go. Backs will have to block effectively on 3rd and long. Special teams will make the difference so this abortion we saw Sat night cannot repeat itself. The biggest criticism I have for CMR is not that he is rotating quaterbacks but that he is not designing a game plan in which a brand new quaterback can succeed. These guys are not David Greene or DJ yet. Richt has owned Fulmer but not Fulmer/Cutcliff. Let’s Run the damn ball, play D, and don’t ask the QB to save us again. Go dawgs

Joe T injured, playing Freshmen Quarterbacks instead – what are the facts ?
123 passes thrown, the same number as our cupcake opponents so far.
4 interceptions thrown by UGA (3 Stafford 1 Cox), our opponents ? 3.
29 Penalties, our Opponents ? Fewer again, only 27 – cupcakes that they’ve been.
48 percent Pass Completion Matt; 60 percent Joe Cox. Excuse for this?
75 Passes Flung Matt Stafford; 28 Joe Cox Passes.
1 TD Pass Matt Stafford; 2 Joe Cox in one-third the passes. Excuses?
Leading Receiver Martrez Milner.
Now, what was it you said about Martrez Milner ? I forget…(right.)
Only Tony Taylor, Paul Oliver (last plays last 2 games) and Johnson Interceptions.
If there is any 1 area UGA must improve this week vs. vols, it is interceptions.
When you have only 2 fumble recoveries 3 interceptions, cannot afford mistakes.
TOTAL YARDS:
.ALL PURPOSE.
.1.Thomas Brown 77 yards a game.
.2.Kregg Lumpkin 61 yards a game.
.3.Danny Ware 60 yards a game.
.4.Mikey Henderson 60 yards a game.
.5.Martrez Milner.
.6.Demiko Goodman.
.7.Kenneth Harris.
.8.Asher Allen.
.9.A.J. Bryant.
.10.Brannan Southerland.
.11.Mohamed Massaquoi. NOT PLAYED ALL 5 GAMES.
Hey, I have a question for the blog ?
Has Matt Stafford played all 5 games?
Geez Louise, what a question.
How can you follow the Georgia Bulldogs, go online, post in public that you have an opinion on Matt Stafford, and in the middle of your dissenting opinion, stop, and ask me if Matt Stafford has even played in all 5 games?
Tell me that one ?
Tony Taylor is the Leading Tackler on The Bulldogs.
Quentin Moses Leads Team in Quarterback Hurries with 12.
Jeff Owens has EIGHT (8) Quarterback Hurries, WOW.
Pass Break-Ups Tra Battle Leads Team with Charles Johnson just 1 behind WOW.
Forced Fumbles Tony Taylor, Tra Battle, Danny Verdun-Wheeler, Paul Oliver, Ramarcus Brown, and there is that Jeff Owens kid again.
Blocked Kicks Dale Dixson and Price Miller.
Scoring Safety Charles Johnson don’t give me this TEAM crap.
Scoring Touchdown CJ Byrd
Sacks Leader Charles Johnson with 3.5
Charles Johnson is The Man.

Georgia Bulldogs are the Number 90 NCAA Passing Offense of 119 teams.
Georgia Bulldogs are the Number 89 NCAA Total Offense of 119 teams.
Matt Stafford is Number 99 of 100 NCAA Passing Efficiency Rating Quarterbacks.
Junkyard Dawg Defense is the Number 1 NCAA Scoring Defense in the Nation.
http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/2006/Internet/ranking_summary/2006000000257.HTML
We are also Number 5 in Punt Returns, Number 5 in Pass Defense, Number 5 Tackles for a Loss by our Defense and the Number 6 NCAA Total Defense in the Nation.
Tennessee beat Air Force by 1 point, and they also beat Marshall and Memphis – oh, great.
Oh, yeah, and they lost to Florida. I forgot; that’s what makes them so great.
Tennessee is Number 65 in Rushing Offense in the NCAA, which is actually worse than UGA.
Tennessee is a one-dimensional fling the ball around the field football team.
Tennessee’s Defense is pitiful and its Special Teams are even worse than that.
The 1 thing they do is to throw the football.
Now, let me see ?
How is UGA in this match-up ?
Hmmm. Let me think.
After Phat Fil plays us, he blubbers into Alabama, South Carolina, LSU and Arkansas.
Now, just how many of those games with 1 Loss Under His Considerable Belt already does Phat Fil expect to lose ?
.Florida.
.Georgia.
.Alabama.
.South Carolina.
.LSU.
.Arkansas.
I do not think that Phat Fil’s team matches up well with ANY of these SIX (6) teams, with him having only a fling the football around the field only football team.
But, what the hell do I know ?
**If I looked at the only thing Phat Fil does, fling the football all over the field this year, and nothing else; I would not think he could win any of these six (6) again this year.
Let’s see now : Not Ranked 3 of the last 6 years in the Final AP Poll.
Dreadful Special Teams, Dreadful Defense, No Rushing Offense – just fling the ball every play…
Hmmm.
Hey Phat Fil ?
Got your Résumé up-to-date dough boy ?

Bulldawg, you are annoying, and incorrect on half of your bs. The only half you are usually right about is when you post a link and let the link do the talking, “not ranked 3 of the last 6 years in the final ap poll”, go find that for me! If you can find that 3 of 6 years I will take back my statement about you. Second, instead of spitting stats about UT, try looking at the fact their starting RB, the guy that rushed for over 700 yards in last 6 games of last year, Arian Foster, has been out for the last 3 games. Another thing, you can’t expect a Freshman like Stafford to play and react/act like a seasoned veteran. Who are you Joe T’s roomate? Seriously,

Bulldawg, one more thing, remember that your impressive stats on D and special teams have come against the weakest schedule of any SEC team thus far. UT has played two teams that were ranked in the top 10. If UGA would schedule someone out of conference worth a damn, maybe you could spit your 60 lines of stats and impress someone. UT can go into Athens Sat. night, put up all the stats in the world, but winning against a quality team is all that is worth talking about. I think the game will be close, I think UGA rises to the occasion, however I think UT edges them.

What’s got to happen is Tereshinski’s passion! Y’all remember the Florida game!
It is time to stop posing with your Stafford-Cox-bleakly Barnes triumvarate; it is time to call on Tereshinski as he will put a whoooopin on whatever Vol or Gator or TIGER or darn YELLOW jackass!
Rout for him and stop these foolish debates: and make Richt be the Clint Eastwood stud he dreams of being: stop the quaterback wussithing, and stick with your starter, the passion of Tereshinski!

Vegas has installed the Vols as a 21/2 point favorite over UGA. They watched the same sorry UGA team I watched Saturday which caused some other Vol fans in my party to exclaim that the Vols don’t even have to bring their “A” game to beat this bunch. Yet, we still read postings from delusional dawgs that point to Ohio State’s national championship team of 2002. Like somehow this team is similar? ROFLMAO UGA has played #137 Western Kentucky,#107 Colorado,#98 Ole P**, and #88 UAB, according to the latest Sagarin ratings, yet BULLDAWG wants to point to the Vols one point victory over #39 Air Force as a reason to be optimistic of a dawg victory? You guys brag about Lumpkin’s first 100 yard rushing game as a dawg against Ole Miss whom your o-line outweighed by 60 lbs along the front like it’s an accomplishment? Your secondary is going to be TORCHED and BURNED by the nations #10 passing efficiency leader Erik Ainge! He will throw to Robert Meachem, who was Rivals.com #3 wr in America in 2002. He will turn and hand to Rivals.com
2 all-purpose back of 2005 Lamarcus Cokerwho has two consecutive 100 yard performances. Vegas will make lots and lots of money off of Joe Q Public this weekend who will look at the nation’s #9 team getting 2 1/2 points at home and will be enticed in taking UGA. Vegas doesn’t lose SUCKERS! The Vols will THRASH UGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coach Richt, I love you but I am going to have to ask you to check the play calling or at least govern the audibles. Something in the process is causing the wrong play to be called. By the way, there is this play called the toss sweep. We obviously aren’t going to run it up the gut. Get the ball to the backs outside of the ends and let the receivers block. They’ll never get called for holding because they’ve shown they can’t hold on to anything! Other than that GO DAWGS and lets get ready for Tenn. We need a statement game. I don’t know if we can do it against Tenn but I will never lose faith in the dawgs! I’ve seen em play down to there competition for years only to come and play like a team when they need to. They did it with Dooley, Goff, Donnan, and now Richt. Lets put it together and whip the vols.

Everybody on the coaching staff and the players know that the season starts October 7. That is when TIII will be back and the emotions will be flowing. If you cannot get you head out of your a#@ for this one then I will have to agree with all of the fairweather fans that posted nothing but negativity before me. This is UT at UGA. You can bet everyone will be ready for the Vols. Lets take it one game at a time. A win is a win. You guys act like this is such an experienced team. All it will take is a late scoring drive to show who the real leader is (that does not include Colorado). I am talking about the big four we play every year. I recall hereing the same lack of leadership comment befor the hobnail boot. ALA David Greene

I’ve been saying for three years now that Eason needs to be let go. Our recievers have been the most underachieving, no toughness showing, non catching, group of guys I’ve ever seen. It’s not the talent it’s Eason and his coaching. Not sure if any of you read the article on Scout.com a few weeks ago that stated CMR had to tell Coach Eason to start doing more catching drills and less blocking drills during practice. How in the hec could the guy we call our recievers coach not be able to recognize that our problem for the last few seasons has been catching the damn ball not blocking. This guy is the reason that we can’t get nat’l top ten recruits at the position. They don’t want to come here and play for a guy that has no clue how to cultivate their talent, can’t relate to younger players, and causes players to decline instead of improve. And I’ll prove it to you. Point #1 Terrance Edwards comes in as a Freashman and tears the SEC up. Ends up being the SEC all-time leader in several categories but still suffers from big drops in big games namely Florida that would have allowed us to play for the Nat’l Championship. He never develops physically while under Eason and altough he has so many SEC records the NFL Scouts still don’t see enough development for one team to draft him. Goes undrafted! Plays in the CFL. Point #2 Fred Gibson and Reggie Brown come in as two of the most sought after recivers in the Nation. Both suffer from dropped passes throught their careers and Gibson never lives up to his potential, and never and develops physically. Drafted fouth round and cut. Brown underachieves for (three years) and finally has a breakout season as a Senior. Drafted second round and is now showing much potential with good NFL coaching. Point #3 Last year the receivers suffer from drops again. We go undefeated till Florida and Shokleys out. Our receivers should have been coached up to be ready to step up and make plays for an inexperienced QB. But NO, Martrez Milner drops a wide open pass EARLY in the game that could have opened the game up. Not only that but S.Bailey droped passes that game and B.Mclendon. We lose in part because the receivers didn’t step up for Joe.T. Point #3 ( This year) Mo Mass after esatblishing himself as our go to man and the best hands on the team, declines and also suffers from the drops and bad route running. Not to mention the drops from the other recievers are still there.
Coincedence or Coaching? EASON MUST GO!!!

Im as Tech fan, but that being said, I think UGA has a great young team. There is more talent at QB than anywhere in the nation. Granted it is raw, but I see Stafford as a big time QB by this time next year. Even this year your schedule sets up much better than Floridas does for them. With a break or two UGA could be headed to Auburn undefeated. 5-0 is 5-0. Tennessee has to come to Athens. I like your chances!

I have two things I want to say here.
Our coaches are terrible. Our players have not been properly prepared or motivated to play since before the Sugar Bowl loss to West Virginia last season. I’m sick of seeing flat and emotionless performances from our team.
You guys who post here should use the spellchecker before you submit your ramblings. I have never seen such bad spelling and grammar. You are making the Dawg Nation look bad. Please stop.

Man… I hope for all of your sakes that BullDawg gets himself locked in a porta-john or something (without his laptop)… I’ve never read so much drivel in one place before.
I honestly think that if you pick a QB and stick with him through thick and thin, since the thin usually comes early and often before it dissipates, your problems will resolve themselves. If the carousel continues, I’m afraid you’ll be taking a couple of good quarterbacks in Cox and Stafford and turning them into complete headcases. Come on… get this ship righted! I want Tech to beat a top 10 Georgia team this November… not a UGAg team that’s channeling Duke!
