Jackets proclaim new trend
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Blacksburg, Va. — A year ago, the schizophrenic team that was Georgia Tech traveled to Miami and, with the backdrop of a maligned head coach, a worn down athletics director and an infuriated fan base, stunned the Hurricanes.
What happened Saturday was bigger.
It’s one thing to end a winning streak of a traditional national power. It’s another for a team to extend its own winning streak and act like that’s the norm. It’s one thing to ruin the week of a favorite. It’s another to set a new direction.
What happened Saturday at Virginia Tech was bigger because this wasn’t merely about an opponent falling back. It was about Georgia Tech stepping up. The biggest victories don’t come late in a relatively lost season, after you’ve already lost to N.C. State and Virginia. The biggest wins set a tone early.
The Yellow Jackets scored 21 points in the first 11 minutes Saturday against a team that pounded them 51-7 the year before in this same death trap of a stadium. In doing so, they numbed an entire state and maybe a conference.
The 38-27 win over the Hokies banged a tone seldom heard on The Flats.
This makes four straight wins since the season-opening loss to Notre Dame, a game that told coach Chan Gailey as much about this team as any that have followed. He remarked in the aftermath Saturday how impressed he was that the Jackets hung with the Irish in a physical game on national TV.
“We didn’t win, but I told our guys after that game, ‘You gained respect,’?” Gailey said. “Now what you do with the respect depends on the rest of the year.”
It follows that Georgia Tech’s season depends on how it handles success. Suddenly, it’s up the Jackets. There isn’t an opponent on the rest of the schedule they can’t beat.
Yes, it’s bigger than the Miami game. It’s the biggest win in the Gailey era. It’s a win that enables a team to look ahead with possibilities. Late-season upsets only let you look back with regret.
“This puts us in the lead of the conference,” linebacker KaMichael Hall said. “At the same time, it’s bad because now you know everybody in the ACC will be gunning for you.”
Teams gunning for Georgia Tech. That may take a while to sink in.
Gailey had struggled against the conference powers at Tech. He was 0-2 against Virginia Tech, 0-2 against Florida State and 1-1 against Miami. This game possibly ignites a program makeover.
It was an unusual week leading up to the Virginia Tech game. Gailey said the “rah-rah atmosphere” (his words) that preceded the Notre Dame game was absent. Things were more businesslike.
Certainly, the Jackets acted Saturday like this is where they were supposed to be. They led 21-0 after 11 minutes. As plots go, this one was unfolding as fantasy for the Jackets, horror for the Hokies and absurdity for everybody else. The Hokies had outscored Tech 85-27 in two previous ACC meetings. As a general rule, teams that get outscored 85-27 don’t take early 21-0 leads, at least not without hallucinogens.
If the Jackets wanted to make a point, they did so early. On the first play of the game, Reggie Ball completed a 59-yard pass to a non-Calvin Johnson (James, the other wide receiver). Four plays later, Ball connected with the more famous Johnson for a 3-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
Virginia Tech was 51-7 at home in the last 13-plus seasons. Usually, it’s the visitor that suffers the meltdown. But consider what followed. Virginia Tech’s punter shanked a punt 16 yards. Moments later from midfield, Ball ran play-action and completed a short toss to Calvin Johnson, who broke loose for 53 yards and a 14-0 lead. (This makes two weeks in a row Johnson scored twice as a “game time” decision. Ah, the wonders of medicine — and fabrication.)
Johnson’s second score was followed by a blocked punt. The blocked punt was followed by another Tech touchdown. On the sideline, Hall wondered if he was in REM state.
“It was a crazy feeling,” he said. “I looked up and thought, ‘Dang! We’ve got 21 points. And they don’t have any!’ It says a lot that we could do this.”
It’ll say even more if it continues.

And to think, the score would not even have been that close in the end if the officials (and especially the replay official)weren’t doing everything the could to help Va Tech. AMAZING

What a great game. So proud of our guys!!! They played great. Glad to see that I am not the only one who thought the officials were terrible!!(I sometimes am a little biased!) By the way, how is UGA ranked in the top 10????? They are struggling way too much with their terrible cupcake schedule recently!! Great win and I love the momentum we have built up. My season tickets were well worth the money. GO JACKETS!!!! and THWG!!

Great line Jeff and true. They “jekyll{sp) and hyde” era of Georgia Tech football seems to have drawn to an end, and Hyde won out. What is the more praiseworthy than Tech’s excellent performance on both sides of the ball, is their consistency on both sides of the ball. Glad to see, that at my last year at Tech we have a great shot a Georgia (who has been playing ugly these last two games).

That was a beautiful win for our kids - they’ll all have a little extra bounce in their steps as they walk around campus next week. Defnitely agree, Jeff - this is one of the biggest wins we’ve pulled off here at GTU in a long long time.

Great Win…as I watched from San Antonio, TX. I still will be glad when Ball leaves though! The defense set the tone, and the offense was just enough. Take that Beamer BALL!

ToddGT - the officiating was terrible. I’m normally on the side of the officials with close calls, but some of the calls made were blatant. Even the guys calling the game for ABC made remarks to that effect. There were times were I sat with more awe and disbelief in the calls than with the score.
Also Connie, I hope your joking about the “GTU” reference - otherwise it proves your not a student (or even a fan) - its GT - or GIT if you want to get fancy.

Good win for the Jackets. It’s y’all that deserve a top 10 ranking, not us Dawgs. We’re toast—the worst 5-0 team in the country. I’m not changing teams, but I’ve got to respect a team that looks well-prepared and focused. Ours does not.

Hey guess what guys The Man is GREG…….is it that complicated? JEFF SCHULTZ you are the biggest flip flopper ever. I thought tech was going to stumble? Maybe with the end of tech sporadic football play it will be the end of jeffs sporadic writing. Probaly not but maybe……..
Also one last comment to ‘the man’ if you guys are so good how come you can barely beat two teams with losing records. One just coming off an 27-3 lost to wake. Yep wake the same team that sucks in the acc. Great game dawgs……be careful against Tenn. OH WAIT, they have a winning record…don’t they?

Great game Tech! Particularly the defense. VT rolled up a lot of yards in garbage time and made it a lot closer at the finish but the Tech D was all over the VT QB. I bet he was tired at the end of the game.
I know that we all get weary of Reggie Ball’s interceptions but do we have anyone better waiting in the wings. What happens next year? Finally, we better enjoy Calvin Johnson this year.

I understand The Man’s pain. After all, if I had a cup cake early schedule (5-0 against opponants with a combined 8-16 record. Only South Carolina has a winning record at 3-2) and was rooting for a team that nearly lost to COLORADO(0-5) and OLE MISS (1-4) in consecutive weeks, I too would be pestering the cross state rivals team. Who by the way, beat the “best” team in their conference in Virginia Tech…ON THE ROAD!!! Good luck Dogs, because as of this point, that’s all you have. Your offense has been terrible without Joe T., and that three running back system seems to be working wonders as well! I don’t see UGA beating any of their rivals this year. Tenn, Fla, Aub, and the Jackets will be ensuring your final record of 8-4. Expect that governors trophy to come back where it belongs: ATLANTA!!! Also, be sure to send us a post card from that s** bowl game you’ll be playing in.

Apoligies to Tech fans over the comments from “the man,” that’s the problem with being a Dawg fan, you have slobbering idiots like that who claim to be fans just because we usually win. If we went 3-9 a couple of years, he’d suddenly have been a lifelong Gator fan.
If you are a UGA fan you have nothing to be proud of this season. I’m a-feared we are looking at an 8-4 and a Peach Bowel bid.
But I digress. Good job against the Hokies. Hope you guys roll to the ACC title game.

Can we get back to the actual game? And the refs? So Cal Johnson catches a pass,OBVIOUSLY and video-graphically certainly a 1st down and the ref spots the ball a whole foot back..and then the ‘review’ confirms the spot? The Hookie RB gets tackled 2 feet out and not even his helmet is over the goal line and the line judge signals TD…and ‘review’ confiirms the call on the field? Who are these guys and what are they smoking in the ‘review’ booth? It is a very good thing the bad calls didn’t really influence the outcome. Reviews should be done quickly, yes, but they should be done correctly and if it takes a minute or two more to get it right, GET IT RIGHT! Otherwise, lets save the time and expense and do it the old-fashioned way - just leave it to the refs on the field - it’ll probably even out. But those guys were just terrible.

I wish there was a way to keep these sport blogs clean. There are way too many UGA and Tech fans that would like to read these without someone with mental issues ruining them. Nice article Jeff even though you picked VPI to win. Now GT needs to stay focused and keep winning and not to get upset. That could happen with Maryland next weekend. A lot of good things are happening at Tech now. Recruiting is going very well and the future looks very bright.

AJC Folks: I was hoping the headline in today’s Sports page was going to be Tech’s UPSET of #11 VT (in Blacksburg!!), not UGA’s stupid win vs. a 1-4 team….guys, this is ATLANTA’s newspaper, and GT is ATLANTA’s team….
The biggest game of the yr comes next week vs. Maryland. We NEED to KICK those Terapins out of Bobby Dodd stadium if we want people to be serious about our progress this year…otherwise, it will be the ‘deja vu’ all over again…don’t get me wrong, I was PLEASED when we beat Virginia easily, but we need to be CONSISTENT and FOCUSED on beating teams we are supposed to be beat…We have the talent, we just need to close the deal!!

what a great win. i was totally shocked as the game progressed but one thing i was not shocked by was reggie ball and his “punk” attitude. he continues to be an embarrassment to the program. i don’t want to hear all this talk about how competitive he is, that is just some of you trying to justify his immature and selfish behavior. if gailey had any guts he would sit balls smart a* down the next time he pulls on of his childish stunts.

Where are the Chan-Haters now? The man is building a quality program that all Tech fans should be proud of. Remember this is his first year with all his recruits, I like what I see and it seems like ole Braine knew what he was doing after all. The contract extension is looking good now: in control of our own destiny in the ACC, the best athlete in Tech history (C.J.), a solid coaching staff, a top 10 recruiting class, a classy A.D., awesome uniforms (throwbacks), and a gathering storm of excitement on the Flats. It is a great day to be a Tech fan! FINISH STRONG!

How do we find out who in the ACC reviews the officials?
They were trying to change the outcome of the game and they need to be fired! The replay official especially. Most obvious bias I have ever seen from the replay booth. And the guy spotting the ball reversed 2 first down spots by fudging the location by a foot or so. Took one away from GT, gave 1 or 2 to VT and they gave them the TD they did not earn.
Some one needs to investigate this one!
And ‘The Man’ is a great ambassador for the quality of a UGA education and some of it’s fans. lol.

What’s up with the AJC!?
I’m not sure about the paper, but there was not even a mention of GTs game on the front page, just like 7 or 8 links for the tight UGA win over a floundering Ole Miss team. I had to go through a couple of pulldown menus to get to any type of Tech story.
And they wonder why they are losing subscriptions.
But back to the game. This was a great win. Not as major an upset as Miami last year, but a bigger win because of it being earlier in the season. I was also impressed that they were able to put together 4 whole quarters of good play rather than the 2 or 3 quarters that they usually put up against good teams. If they can keep up that level of play, they will for sure make it to the ACC championship.

First time on the GT blog. The game was a great win for a long time struggling program. I congratulate Chan and the kids for a great effort. They showed focus, determination and commitment and maturity. I haven’t been a Chan fan because, I wasn’t convinced he had the ability to lead a winning program. All the hipe about his past experience (college & pros) just wasn’t panning out. I’m hopeful that he now has the Asst’s. to get GT back to where they belong. Time will tell. The officiating was pitufull (typical of homefield mentality) and probably will be reviewed by the conference. I haven’t been active/consistant in following GT sports since Bobby & Bobby (Ross & Cremins). I look forward to what happens as the season progresses. Go Jackets.

I told everybody, this program has turned the corner. I also said beating VaTech would be an upset in rankings only, the on field talent was in GT’s favor. VaTech no longer has a mobile QB to kill the blitz scheme. In my mind that means every team GT plays from here on out are in trouble, including UGA. (UGA by the way looks like a 1AA team on offense and should NOT be a top 10 team.)
The coaching staff has learned how to utilize the talent on the field, specifically Calvin and Reggie (I’d also throw Rashaun Grant in there because his prescence on the field is creating match up problems). They’ve also learned how to minimize the number of mistakes from Reggie, and how to shrug them off when he does make them. Those two interceptions he threw yesterday would have been (and were) devastating to last year’s team. But the defense said “get on our backs and we’ll take this thing home.”
I’m proud of the team. But it’s time to put this win behind us and focus on beating Maryland on Saturday. Back to work.
Go Ramblin Wreck!!!!!
Oh and here’s a f******* you to ALL CAPITAL LETTERS GREG before he even gets on here. UGA HAS TOILET LOGS IN THEIR PANTS!!!LOL!!!OLE MISS!!!LOL!!!!!

Although I’m a Hokie alum and supporter and am disappointed with our loss, provided Georgia Tech goes undefeated, which we know is difficult in the ACC. (Virginia Tech was unxpectedly in the ACC championship game last year due to a couple of Miami losses… one to Georgia Tech), if some other team has to win the ACC, I hope it’s Georgia Tech… I usually say my two favorite teams are my Hokies and whoever plays Miami or Florida State LOL And have fun watching Calvin Johnson… he’s a special player… he seems like he is a top 5 NFL Draft guy.

Your team almost lost to OLE MISS. OLE MISS got their asses handed to them by WAKE FOREST last week. I think you need to take your penis pump and go home to play with your mommie in the basement. Homo.

If you say Bud…weiser? Reggie can make in close. Great job jackets. I told everyone to give Chan a chance. Looks like its paying off. Still have issues at corner and safety, but we’ll make it work. This is the year Tech beats Georgia. No haters please. Just read and learn.

Jeff… Your article shuld say nothing more than:
I WAS WRONG. TECH IS DAMN GOOD TEAM. PERIOD.
Enough aid. Is that so tough? Guess you you have to take a few backhanded shots at Tech. That’s the only way to make you feel better after another nailbiter win for Georgia against a woeful opponent.

Yea Schultz, thanks for all the backhanded compliments. You’re the same guy who said the Hokies would easily cover that 10pt spread and keeps writing about ‘accepting mediocrity’ at GT. Clearly, GT is improving every week….but I doubt you even watch our games. I don’t think that there is any room on the bandwagon for people like you….

As an 82 year old Georgia Tech letterwinner in track (By the way it was GST back in those days), football is by far my favorite sport and I drive 300 miles to attend every Tech home game. Yesterdays win over Virginia Tech (where I spent my freshman year in college - - - and it was VPI back in those days!) was great. Too bad there are so many SICK bloggers who can only write NASTY comments!!! Go Jackets!

Just back from Blacksburg and now I’m sitting in the GaDome, waiting for the Falcons. Just wanted to touch base. Good comments all on last night’s game. That 21-0 start in 11 minutes will go down as one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. Also, to a few of you who believe I owe Tech some apology for picking them to lose, let me clear up some misconceptions: 1) I write a satirical Friday Predictions column during the football season, as many of you know. The fact that I predict Virginia Tech to win easily doesn’t mean I’m “rooting” for or against anybody. If you must know, the only entity I root for is me: a good story to write; 2) This leads to misconception #2. Sports writers don’t root for or against anybody. We’re not fans. We root for a story to tell and people to help tell it. I know many Georgia Tech fans believe the AJC is Bulldog Central but, really, we don’t hold secret meetings deciding how we’re going to build up UGA and tear down Tech. Our job is the same, regardless of who wins or losses. 3) Tech is a great story right now, given Saturday’s win and what could be forthcoming. I know of nobody who is rooting against them — well, outside of Athens. And, yes, NotGTU, Tech is a Damn Good Team. JS

Greg/aka The Man(Lover),AJC and Schultz, et. al,
none of you can and will admit that the Jackets are a superior team to the UGAG pups. We win and win big against the 11th ranked team in the nation (only one spot behind the mutts) and we get second billing in the paper and online to the fleabags. The refs sucked yesterday and tried to give the game to the turkeys….but our guys won’t let them do it this year. Great defense and an offense to match. UGAG barely gets by UC and Ole Miss in back to back weeks and Greg talks like they are deserving of a top 10 ranking? Jackets great win…savor it and learn from it….use it to build upon in the coming weeks and let the ignorant dogposters find one to raise a leg on. (That’s a joke in case it was too cerebral for you Greg) Great win against a good football team and a set of referees.

Jeff,
What we Tech fans are upset about at the AJC is not the fact that you pull against us…I don’t think that you do…its just that we get no respect from the AJC or the writers until and unless we do beat someone like we did yesterday and UGA always gets top billing in the paper…or on the net…. why can’t we get treated the same….not like we did by the refs last night… that’s all we are asking for jeff….equal respect and exposure!

Applause to our side for not trying to out-retard our friends from UGA with insidious blog responses.
I think we look as solid as 1990. Better than Joe’s or George’s top 10 teams for sure, because these guys play defense. Whoever blogged that the biggest game of the year will be next week against Maryland is DEAD RIGHT!!

Thanks for your comments Jeff. It’s always good to see evidence that the sportswriters actually check up on their blogs from time to time.
In reference to the complaining about bias in reporting, every Tech fan should realize that the AJC posts front page articles about UGA because UGA has been winning more than Tech. After this year, that will change, but not before. This team is special, and it will accomplish special things. Go Jackets!

Mr. Schultz, since when has Virginia Tech become a “traditional” national power? They have a very good team but not traditionally. They are not in the group with ND, Alabama, Texas, USC and several others as traditional national powers. Not to take anything at all from Georgia Tech, they beat a very good team on their own field but a Traditional National Power, no way.

Mony, I think Jeff was refering to Miami as the ‘traditional national power.’
I’d agree that objectively, GT beating VT is a bigger story than Georgia beating Miss. Whoever the editor that decides on front page material is obviously a Georgia fan. Maybe not the whole paper, but somebody with pull.

Congrats on the good win. My Hokies played very poorly, and you guys played quite the opposite.
When one is down 21-0 in the first 8 minutes, that’s pretty much the end of it…
I thought it was interesting how the media seemed to think the key was VT stopping GT’s running game. Ya’ll didn’t seem to care much about that phase of the game…
You D-line ate ours, it was sick.
But lets lay off the refs. Yeah, that one bad spot and the TD favored GT, you your guys laid out our QB three times and didn’t get called for it.
Good game, and congrats again. I just fear Clemson will beat us both.

If you read Tech and UGA blogs you will find the same angry rhetoric by both sets of fans. Both groups feel the writing staff is not behind their team. But when a columnist doesn’t stroke your team, it’s sophomoric to assume your team is getting slighted. If your team is good, they usually say so. If your team stinks, you shouldn’t expect a column to read otherwise. If that’s what you want, then you are really after sentimentality, not commentary. I suspect a dream come true for the AJC columnists would be a Tech vs UGA game featuring 2 top-10 teams w/ National BCS consequences from the outcome. I think secretly they want all the “home town” Atlanta teams to do well.
If Tech keeps winning they’ll get their kudos here and across the nation. The fans need not worry about this weekend’s coverage.

The game was surreal. I loved every minute of it. I didn’t think the officiating was that bad, and anyway I didn’t really care they scored the last TD. They were down by 3 scores w/ 5:00 min left…it was OVER at that point. I love watching the offense score more and more points. I think they are getting better as the year rolls on, which is something that has been missing from past teams. Nix is doing a great job , and mixing it up.
At this point, I chose to believe this team will not have a let down. I think they will play with a purpose each and every game, and will beat UNC, Duke, Md, NCSt, and Miami (they don’t scare me anymore…Miami is through for the season). That leaves Clemson and UGA as the 2 toughest teams on the schedule (I think UGA pulls it together in the next couple weeks). So I’m calling between 9-11 wins for tech, depending on those 2 games. This season will end up between excellent and outstanding!
A loss at Clemson would not be devastating if we win the rest of our ACC schedule. In fact, it may set up a championship game rematch, which would be interesting. And speaking of rematches, who would like to see Tech play ND in a bowl game, unleash Calvin on them for real this time, and stomp them into jelly? That’s what I’m pulling for…

Don’t feel bad GT fans. The officiating - especially for replays - has been abismal for most all of the NCAA this season. I was especially shocked at the Calvin Johnson first down play that was marked back about 18” by the line judge and confirmed in the replay booth. Just be happy that the final result was not altered as the outcomes of several games have been changed by the refs this season, most notably Oregon/Oklahoma.
Regarding favoritism by the AJC, I noticed more than 20 years ago when I was a GT student that AJC tended to favor UGA over GT in their coverage (e.g. more headlines, front pages, color photos, etc.). After checking with a Technique writer who had interned with the AJC, I found out that there are more mutt hans than Jacket fans subscribing to the AJC, so the AJC is just attempting to address the tastes of their audience. So, don’t expect the favoritism to change unless enrollment patterns at the two schools change drastically. Just the same, AJC is pathetic to give bigger coverage to the mutts narrow win over a weak team instead of covering GT’s great upset.
Also, I hope that “The Man” keeps up with the ridiculous posts because he continues to make UGA and its fans look REALLY STUPID!!

Great game for Tech. Hopefully WE win out as well as the pups for a great show down in Athens which the Jackets WIN!
On a second note: I find it sad that AJC cannot block some of the posts put on the Blogs. I have been posting on the Atlanta Falcons site for a couple of years and some of the posts I have read on AJC would have been deleted on the Falcon’s site and the poster banned. Come on AJC serve your customers - do really want this trash posted on your website??

I love Tech, but don’t you all think that the AJC has more UGA fan subscribers than GT fan subscribers. Come on Tech fans, you all should be smarter than that. The AJC is a for profit business that is trying to sell a lot of newspapers. In my opinion, 75% of the state cheers for UGA so of course, the AJC is trying to sell to that audience.

This text to be bolded To say a writer doesn’t “root” for a team is equivalent to saying a liberal (or conservative) is “moderate”….YOU CAN’T BE NEUTRAL (EVEN if you THINK you are perfect). Just like the media bias claimed by both parties in politics, you DO have a bias (to some degree)!!

this text to be bolded On this one, we agree. I think the GT-UGA rivalry is one of “sibling” rivalry and we root for our brother (to a certain extent) until WE play him. Then we want to win at all costs (for ‘bragging rights’).
In the end, you had the chance to ‘step up’ a little by just saying, “WOW, those Jackets showed me something Saturday and boy was I wrong in my pick Friday”…. Instead, you chose the “holier than thou” route (and further justified the venom heaped upon you by the Tech faithful…..
Quit “hanging out” with your fellow UGA-journalism alums and spend a little time with BISHER…HE’S FIGURED OUT what it takes to be a great writer!!
P.S. Next time you have press-passes for another Tech road game (where you’ll say they are out-matched), how about giving the tickets to a ‘neutral’ writer (or — better yet, a true Tech ‘biased’ fan….after all, the write-up will be buried on the back pages of the AJC anyway if the Dawgs are playing any school over Vo-Tech level…..)
