Golden opportunity for Jackets
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
If those associated with the Georgia Tech football program wish folks to take them seriously again, they must win Saturday in Blacksburg, Va.
Period.
End of story.
Actually, if the Yellow Jackets do slay Virginia Tech, they could add several more chapters to their book entitled “How to leave mediocrity for the first time during the Chan Gailey regime.” Later, they could survive a trip to Death Valley. Then they could whip their daring choice for a homecoming guest (Miami). Then they could evolve into the kings of Tobacco Road after visiting Raleigh and Chapel Hill. Then they could end all of that barking Between the Hedges. Then they could reach the ACC championship game before securing a berth in a BCS game.
It’s possible. Well, much of it is, because the Jackets have an offense with Calvin Johnson, their all-everything wide receiver, and they have a defense ranked among the nation’s elite in virtually everything. There also is something else about the Jackets, according to linebacker KaMichael Hall, their second-leading tackler. “We’ve always had talent, but I just think this is the most together Georgia Tech team that I’ve played for,” Hall said. “It’s just the way that we get along, and the way that we work well together, and the way that we put all three phases of the game together.”
The Jackets showed as much during their season opener at Bobby Dodd Stadium against Notre Dame. In fact, they were better than Notre Dame. They lost after Tech coaches punted away common sense by refusing after the first half to keep unleashing Johnson against a clearly overmatched secondary.
That said, the Jackets did what they had to do against inferior Samford and Troy. They crushed them. They also did what they occasionally haven’t done when facing the meek of the ACC by smashing Virginia last Thursday during a nationally televised home game. Tech coaches even threw early, often and late to Johnson against the Cavaliers. It made you wonder if they finally discovered what the rest of us already knew, and that is you keep going to Johnson no matter what. He’s among the nice collection of players with the ability to take the Jackets away from their blah existence toward whatever bliss they’ll reach with a victory against historically potent but slightly vulnerable Virginia Tech.
Although the Jackets were a second half filled with Johnson (you know, their Notre Dame fiasco) shy of becoming pretty great at 4-0, they still are pretty good at 3-1. They just slid into the Top 25 at No. 24. If nothing else, they are on course to do as well as Gailey’s other Tech teams that concluded each of the past four seasons with seven victories. It’s just that another such finish for the Jackets is unacceptable.
Unless mediocrity is acceptable for these Jackets. Which it isn’t, according to Hall, who has joined teammates and coaches in stressing the need to seek and reach The Next Level. “That’s our ultimate goal — to be able to get over the hump and to be able to win nine, 10, 11 games,” said Hall, whose Jackets were sprinting that way last season after a 4-0 start produced a No. 15 national ranking. Their next game was in Blacksburg, where they managed seven points to the Hokies’ 51. Worse, Hall admitted before this season that more than a few Tech players actually quit during the game.
So, with Blacksburg back on the horizon for the Jackets, and with No. 11 Virginia Tech missing a couple of starters after struggling last week against pitiful Cincinnati, these Jackets have a chance to show the guts that those other Jackets lacked. “We just came out last year, and one thing after another happened, and it kind of escalated after that,” Hall said. “You think about that, and it’s motivational, but at the same time you don’t want to think too much about it. If you think too much about something like that you won’t focus on the goal that is at hand.”
For the Jackets, that goal involves going to the Virginia foothills and doing nothing less than the last two words of their Ramblin’ Wreck song: Fight, win.

Well Mr. Moore, I can honestly say that I’m pleasantly surprised. Although you did rehash all of the smack you’ve talked about Tech for the past few months, you hinted that you might be coming around to the belief (shared by both the team and the fans) that this team might be capable of more than its’… how did you put it… blah existence. Ditch a couple of the underhanded “complements” you hand out to Tech and maybe the number of flames you receive on your blogs will decrease markedly. Good column, and I agree. This team can (and will, I think) be special. Go Jackets!

I thought we were 3-0 going into Blacksburg last year. We don’t even visit Raleigh this season do we? Do your homework, T. As much as I hate to admit it Terrance is right on. This is our chance to prove it. I just hope our coaches dont lose it for us again.

Even if we beat VT, theres no way we go undefeated the rest of the year… just too many tough games (at Clemson and at UGA). 9-3 is very possible tho.

We were 3-0 last season going into the VT game. We do visit Raleigh later this year playing NC State, the thing is though, with all those other games on our schedule, they’re spaced well apart that we have easy games between. I really see this team as the most solid team in the last few years and who knows, maybe we will see them on that extra saturday reserved for title games and in January instead of early December for a Bowl Game.
By Ty

It’s quite simple, folks.
Win at VT and then ‘hold serve’ against the teams you should beat…. and a 9-3 season is the MINIMUM expectation. I agree with the group… There’s no reason this team wouldn’t contend for the Coastal / ACC championship (and the BCS). The only two things stopping them are ….1) Coaching, and 2) QB play.
Jury is still out on whether this will be a “Jason Campbell” for RB (he’ll start to clarify this on Saturday) and whether Chan has finally “figured out” the college game.
I stand by my pre-season assertion…Saturday will determine whether we are BCS-caliber or headed to another “no-name” bowl…… NO REASON not to be in Jacksonville in December……..
And, T. Moore, this writing is “spot on”….thanks for dropping the controversy and laying out the facts (for a change).
Later.

It takes two to tango: no matter how good Calvin Johnson is, Reggie Ball must get him the ball and with decent timing.
Second, is Calvin really that wide open all the time? I know because of his speed, he is supposed to make fools out of secondaries, but does he?
That said, even if covered fairly close, with his height advantage over most defensive backs, the ball should be thrown to him in such a way that he outjumps the opponent.

I agree that the VA Tech game is a “defining game” this season for GA Tech.
Win, and GA Tech should be ranked in all polls (probably in the top 15). Lose, and GA Tech will drop from getting hardly any votes at all.
I hope and pray that Nix continues to be creative on the offensive play calling. VA Tech’s defense is too tough for us to go conservative.
I hope and pray that Chan has fixed all of our special teams issues. VA Tech teams sometimes thrive on special teams scoring points for them and turning games around for them.

As one of two GT and UGA fans(the other is Bill Curry), I was dissappointed with the ND outcome. Chan is not the problem. The lack of depth and inconsistencies of a senior QB are far more telling. Lets not forget the coach can only do so much. That being said, I like our chances this saturday. Keep the game within reach late and hope for another miracle like the one we witnessed at Clemson. Oh yeah, why are all GT fans haters and all bulldog fans bullies. Just thinking out loud.

I would have felt a lot better about GT’s chances had Cincinnati not bloodied VT’s nose last week. Now, there’s no way VT will be cocky heading into Saturday. Still, I don’t think their secondary can cover Johnson. This is not the VT of years past. They can be beat but if you let them take the lead, Lane can be one of the loudest football stadiums in the country. If they fall behind, it’s like a graveyard.

I think our D-line matches up well with their young O-line and inexperienced QB. Tenuta shuts down their O, our special teams play doesn’t give up the huge momentum-changing play, our offense is adequate and gets some good yardage on the ground, and we win.
Oh yeah, “The Man” needs to quit taking whippets and sniffing his mom’s panties… that doesn’t make you a man. Skipping high school isn’t cool dude, I’m pretty sure UGA still requires HS equivalency to apply.

Is anyone concerned about Choice’s lack of production? I don’t think he has rushed for 100 yards in a game yet.
By GTGreg
September 28, 2006 10:43 AM | Link to this
I’ll admit that Choice’s relative lack of production (we got spoiled by PJ) is bothersome… it seems like when he’s running North/South he is tentative when hitting the holes and dances a little in the backfield. He seems to much prefer running E/W, since he has the speed to get to the corner. If he can just be more decisive on his N/S runs I think his production would increase markedly. Another thing that I think would play to both Choice and Grant’s speed and shiftiness is the short screen pass. Both Choice and Grant appear to do well in the open field, and Grant has shown that he has good hands, so why not turn ‘em loose on some screens?

I love VT and live here in SEC country (hate it). GT has a chance to beat us, BUT the only way they CAN win is to throw the ball to Calvin at least 12 to 15 times to give him a chance to score or put them in good field position. GT would have beat ND but they played to conservative. Cant beat the Hokies being conservative…..

I don’t think the perceived lack of production from Choice is due to effort or execution on his part as much as it is the design of the offense and the running game not fully jelling yet. Most of Choice’s runs are coming out of the shot gun where he takes a hand off usually running E/W and then is supposed to turn it up into the line or he’s taking a pitch from Ball on that horrible sprint option that TECH has been running and he’s fighting to get 3-4 yards off of that. I think we need to see a little more I formation with Cox leading Choice to make our offense more effective and to show that Choice is a quality back. A couple of other thoughts would be to actually let the fullback run it a couple of times a game and throw to the middle of the field. We’re holding the ILB’s with the threat of Ball running and that opens the middle but we basically refuse to take advantage.
By GTGreg
September 28, 2006 11:38 AM | Link to this
I agree wrecker1, I was one of the people last year that wanted to see more option from Reggie, but every time I see it now I can almost not bear to watch. If they are going to run the option, they need to teach Reggie how and when to pitch the bloody ball.
If The Man thinks his idiotic gay jokes are clever, then he’s the only one. Well, maybe GREG might agree. I can see it now… The Man and GREG giggling together over a laptop in some broom closet somewhere, taking turns posting on AJC.com. After a few hours in the dark, the tension that has built up between them overcomes them and they lean in for their very first kiss. How romantic.

The game against VT would be a golden opportunity, but GT will not win this game. This Georgia Tech team certainly has some talent and the defense is better than many seasons we have seen. Calvin is a great receiver and Tashard Choice shows promise. But Reggie Ball and our unimaginative offensive game plan will, unfortunately, lose the game for us. Reggie just can’t look off the design receiver for the play and I’m sick and tried of him whining to the officials like a tattle tale after almost every play. Play the game Reggie, complete the plays, gain the yards and it doesn’t matter what the other team is doing! Don’t run to the officials looking for favors in attempt to win the game!
We were absolutely flat offensively in the second half last week against a very poor Virginia team. We were also flat in the second half against Notre Dame. We can’t afford to be flat against VT or they will run away with the game. Nine more games (including our usual rinky dink bowl game) and Reggie’s gone forever………..

Just calling it like it is ramble on. For four years we have been positive, hoped for the best, watched every game and routed for the team til the end, only to be rewarded within inconsistent play and a declaration to “accept mediocrity”. When you pay thousands of dollars each year into all of the necessary funds to improve your season ticket status, you eventually expect more than mediocrity. I would like nothing better than to see our GT team beat VT this Saturday, even if it’s a squeaker. But the offensive play I’ve seen thus far doesn’t lend itself toward this outcome. Look at the second half scoring of each team: GT has scored only 31 points in the second half thus far, only 10 points if you don’t consider the Troy game. On the other hand, VT has scored 68 points in the second half, compared with 70 points in the first half. This indicates a much more well rounded and consistent approach to the game. VT also has the depth and the ability to stay competitive to the end of the game. Thus far, and last year, GT has not.
It would be great to read your “I told you so” after Saturday. But so far, I don’t see it happening. If it does, it will be a different Reggie Ball than we have seen over the last 2 years of his career show up in Blacksburg.
No one takes “The Man“‘s comments seriously. I think they’re actually pretty funny.

If not going for it on 4th and 1 on the ND 42, with the lead late in the 3rd quarter, comes back to bite a 9-2 or better season, Gailey has to go! Seriously. That was a given to go for it and he passed. Miami is beatable … Georgia got its scare last week and will be ready for a rivalry game … GT always plays Clemson better in the valley than home (go figure) …. beating VT this week could create the momemtum to get us to the ACC Championship Game. I’d love to beat FSU in Jax!

Tech was 3-0 going into the VT game last year. Not 4-0.

gtalum…you’ll get your wish at the end of the year, but I think you may change your mind. I’m not a Reggie fan myself, I wish he’d shut up and quit talking the trash, but you haven’t seen the stupid decision from the previous years and he’s been more accurate on his throws. The three bombs for TD’s this year were right on the money and in stride. He just needs to some decent runs on Saturday and throw the ball to Calvin about 85% of the time. We do that and don’t break down on special teams (KICK THE BALL OUT OF BOUNDS, just give it to them on the 35). I think we’ll be OK.

STEVE O…Terence just makes up “facts”…see his article on the ND “fish throwing game”. half was true the other stuff, hear-say BS…hell, reading one of his articles through completion is a chore and rarity. He’s the AJC’s Jason Blair. It hurts to admit, but, I agree with his point.

Calvin Johnson is one of the most, if not the most gifted receiver I’ve seen in my time as a fan, but you won’t win throwing to him and making that your focus. VT shuts the run down and forces Reggie Ball to throw to win the game, and GT is in trouble. Ball if a fine young man by all accounts, but erratic is a polite way to put it, I guess. Someone mentioned it earlier. Tashard Choice has a good game, GT can win. If he is shut down with the rest of the running game, Reggie Ball won’t win the game with his arm.

Some cold water on the real situation. ND is’nt as good as advertised. We may be better than advertised but Troy, Samford and UVA are not in the same category as VT, Miami, Maryland, Clemson, UGA and even NCST and UNC talent wise. Duke is’nt going to be a pushover. Until this team/program can string two big wins together soon in a row then mediocrity is the buzzword. We still don’t really have an explosive offense that can move on good defenses.

He can with his legs though, and I’d trust that more than his arms.
