Odell Thurman’s career is doomed

Jeff Schultz

10: More on this later today, after I’ve had a chance to survey the wreckage in Flowery Branch. But there was much more to the Falcons’ loss than, “Gee, everyone wanted New Orleans to win.” Emotion counts for only so much.

9: To put it another way: It’s amazing how one loss can unmask a team’s every conceivable weakness.

8: We lost the Ryder Cup. Am I supposed to care? Golf is the ultimate sport of individualists. And this isn’t the Olympics, so let’s get off this whole patriotism thing.

7: For all of those people who blasted me with e-mail and phone calls after I criticized Georgia and Mark Richt for not being tougher in dealing with Odell Thurman, I have a question: Where are you now?

6: Thurman’s a knucklehead and he always has been. Yes, he had a tough home life growing up. I know. I’ve heard it ad nauseam. But he was surrounded by enablers at home and in Athens. It’s as if nobody ever said, “Odell, you can’t do that.” So he did that. Often.

5: Thurman, who already was serving a four-game suspension when he was arrested for DUI the other night, probably is gone for the season. He might want to take the time to practice this line, “Would you like to Super Size that?” Because that’s where his career is headed.

4: Thurman is drinking and partying his way right out of the NFL. He was an immature kid at Georgia. What did anyone expect was going to happen once he turned pro, he had money in his pocket and he didn’t have a class schedule?

3: If you were the Cincinnati Bengals right now, how much would you pay to put David Pollack’s head on Odell Thurman’s body?

2: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers maintain that Chris Simms may return this season. Is that the good news or the bad news?

1: It’s just another late-September Braves-Mets series that doesn’t mean anything.

There are ups and downs in every NFL season- the Falcons looked like a Super Bowl team vs. Charlotte and like they may never win again vs. the people that swim in their own sewage (the Saints). Super Bowl champs lose an average of four times a year. Take a deep breath.

Mark Richt is the biggest enabler on planet earth, and the fleabag nation loves him because he goes to church on Sunday. All he cares about is winning… (See FSU). You haven’t heard about those boys in trouble since he’s left. He gets the best talent/punks in the USA but, because they are so stupid, they either can’t get in to UGA (what a joke that is), or the get arrested only to have Richt suspend them from the pansy opening games. Thanks Jeff, but the mutt nation don’t care.

Hey, he got him in, they won games, and he got him out. That’s the job of your big time college coach today. Mack Brown had two stopped with a lb of pot and a 9mm in one of their laps a couple of weeks ago, and they are back on the field for the Longhorns with no charges pending. Unlike you Jeff, who if you lost your cush job would be flippin’ burgers, Odell will have time to burn through a few million and work for ten or twelve jock sniffin’ Dawg alumni sellin’ cars before he sees a deep fry basket.

Jeff, What are you smoking! So its UGA responibility to ensure that Odell is a model person while is on contract with the Bengals. I understand stars in college are put on a pedistal, but Please explain to me how does UGA or any college program should do to keep their student-athletes on the straight and narrow path. While you see all of the Dollars signs from the NFL all around them.

It’s not often that I agree with Schultz, but he hit the nail on the head with his comment about enablers.

I’ve always been amazed that, no matter how many UGA players have significant off the field problems, Saint Mark Richt always emerges without a scratch.

Of course, this shouldn’t come as a surprise, since Saint Mark learned his craft at the side of Pope Bobby Bowden, the king of all enablers and the original Teflon coach.

I find it interesting that the kids who Richt and Bowden deem worthy of second (and third and fourth) chances are always big, strong, and fast.

Probably just a coincidence, huh?

Message for the Ohio State Penitentiary: “Dude you’re gettin an O’Dell.”

Ironic that the Bengals uniform has stripes on them. They’re just going the wrong direction (the stripes and their players). Maybe UGA should change their uniforms to better fit their personalities. Proof positive that there is no god. David Pollack, a clean cut well behaved hard worker gets his neck broke and puts his season and perhaps career in jeopardy. Meanwhile, Odell does his best Paul Crew impersonation, with his 4 strikes loser buddy Chris Henry and both of them will have an NFL job somewhere, you know it’s true.

Daniel,

I think what Schultz is saying is that a guy like Odell Thurman should never have been given the priviledge of playing college football, thereby not allowing him entrance into the NFL, at least not thru the front door. I think it’s safe to say “personal responsibility” is not in Odell Thurman’s vocabulary. But then again, “academic eligibility” or “laws” appear not to be in his vocabulary either. College football coaches often pontificate about how they love coaching because they get to help mold young men into responsible adults. I guess that isn’t part of the “personal responsibility” you are talking about, eh Daniel?

I’m going to go on a rarity and agree with all the Tech people…

Richt does need to crack down on the players getting in trouble. However, it’s happening at every winning program: USC, OU, Texas, UGA, Auburn, etc. It begs the question: Would you rather win 10 games a year and take some chances like those schools…or would you rather be squeaky clean and go 7-5 like Tech?

Frankly…I’d rather have it the way we do as opposed to at Tech. I’m not bashing your program, but it is what it is.

By matt

September 26, 2006 12:14 PM | Link to this

Thank you Daniel- Let’s not put the responsibility on Odell’s shoulders, no no no! It’s always someone else’s fault!! It’s never the individual’s fault for making bad decisions!! He’s a #$%^%* adult!! He makes adult choices and has to live with his adult consequences!! I’m a HUGE dawgs fan so don’t even bother thinking I’m just hating on the dawgs! One of the biggest problems in society today is that it’s built around 3,4,5 chances!! Everyone should always get another chance! Every school does it, every coach does it! The problem with that is that sooner or later, probably in your adult life you’re going to run out of chances! Surround yourself with bad people and bad things happen!!

Rubeun Houston sound familiar???? He was charged with pot. Played again at Tech. AT Barnes, who the AJC did an article on before the season is not eligible. No, its not because of some mishap with his transcrips. He couldn’t read, he is an idiot im from Cville. Yet Tech gets him in school. UGA has higher academic entrance requirements that Tech, but Tech fans refuse to acknowledge that fact. Thats how they get more players in that really didn’t qualify. Yet at UGA they do the right thing and send them to Hargrave to get straightend away. Tech fans have no room to speak on this matter, considering how they operate.

Jason…I didn’t say “cheat”, idiot. I said “take some chances”, i.e. recruit players who might have character issues but are great athletes like Odell Thurman. That isn’t cheating.

All I said was that you can recruit two-star athletes who are choir boys and go 7-5 or get some big time players and take a few chances and win 10 games. I’ll take the latter because, whether you believe it or not, having a winning football program can help a school’s academics (especially in the south where people love college football).

If you’d take the time to stop playing dungeons and dragons, you’d be able to actually read what I wrote and think about it logically.

You can control them and still win. Look at AU. They suspended Kevin Sears for 5 games for a DUI including UA, UW and LSU, and Blackmon has been suspended for the 1st 4 this yr and is still suspended for public intoxication. Both of these guys are starters.

Somebody tell me what CMR could have done differently that would have changed Odell’s character in the two(?) years he was a UGA. I’m not defending CMR here, but we all knew Odell was like that when he came to UGA. Should CMR have kicked him off the team? He would have gone to another school and been just the same person. I think Odell is and always will be the way he is, no matter who his coach is.

As much as I love my Dawgs, I have to agree with Jeff. A few years ago, I had the task of working over in the old Athletic dormitory McWhorter as a one of the housing supervisors. My staff and I had so many problems with those guys and the coaching staff not doing what they were supposed to do in terms of helping to monitor their behavior.

“Enablers” would be the correct term, I don’t know how many times those guys got away with things that average students would have been thrown off of campus for. It really did change my perspective on college athletics. Sure some of these guys came from rough circumstances, both black and white, but man, when are people ever going to expect for people to just grow up???

The stories I have to tell to the grandkids one day!!!

The Odell Thurman sitation is just a sad happening, especially considering he has the world at his feet….and he’s not the only one.

Tech, you are not on UGA’s level as a program. Just remember you are TECH. It would be like us UGA fans trying to compare ourselves to The New England Patriots, we are not on their level so we don’t argue. Tech has lower academic entrance requirements, I know this I went thru the recruiting process for another sport (Not Football). Tech had a federal drug case with a player, and the school has Al Queda members it lets in. Tech just remember you are Georgia Tech, nobody cares. Go beat somebody at some point in your football history and then talk.

Try blaming the ADULT that got pulled over for drunk driving while currently serving a 4 game suspension for substance abuse, (with his loser friends who also can’t seem to stay out of trouble!) instead of his college coach who took a chance on him a couple of years ago!

Georgia’s list of Rivals ( top 3 can flip on order of opinion ) but others are set.

  1. Auburn
  2. Florida
  3. Tennessee
  4. Clemson
  5. SEC Championship game opponent
  6. South Carolina
  7. LSU
  8. Kentucky
  9. Vanderbilt 10.Ole Miss
  10. Mississippi State
  11. Whatever warm up team we have
  12. Georgia Tech

Maybe this is why Tech fans get so jealous, they know that we just don’t care about them and don’t consider them a rival. We have superior talent, and coaching, play in a superior league, and we always win the game. So they are not a rival, and I think that just really angers them. Richt has an outstanding record of disciplinary actions at UGA. He dishes out punishment, and based upon the severity of the action, MAY give second chances. If the player doesn’t learn from this action, he is kicked off the team (reference senior linebacker Derrick White from a year ago). CMR is a stand up guy with impeccable character. I’ll make sure and be near the hedges looking for you Ramble on at the mouth. I’ll be glad to relieve you of any piece of the hedge you have too. Since you won’t be there I have nothing to worry about. You’ll be with all the other bug fans the same place you all were last time in Athens, dragging your sorry a* back to your car muttering about how good you are in basketball. Careful if you mess with the bull son, you’ll get the horns, or maybe that should be don’t mess with a Dawg, or you’ll get the teeth.

Jim, Cane does not necessarily mean hurricane. But I’ll take their 5 national titles over UGAG’s 1 anyday!

Tech fans have selctive memories, always have.Last I checked there was no UGA Football player indicted or convicted of trafficking 62 pounds of marijuana while his child was in the backseat of his car while being arrested, and then allowed to play all in the same year no less!Wow what feat for Chan Gailey and Reuben Houston.Last I checked no one at UGA has been indicted on terrorism charges. Last I checked UGA was 12-3 agaisnt the Trade School, those 3 losses just so happened to be when the Trade School was using (of all things) academically ineligible players. Not a clean win against UGA since 1990! Since Vince Dooley arrived in 1964 the Trade School has won exactly 11 games against UGA, 42 chances…11 wins. Now we know why they are so envious.Ramble On , we welcome you to come and get a piece of the hedges,I have a piece myself, everyone else is envious of that Tradition, you would be no different. GO DAWGS!!!

This guy kills me, Ramble On…. He hasn’t made one true statement all day. He said I called him a homo, I don’t recall ever writing that. Oh well, I guess thats how it goes to be the loser team in the state. Once again we don’t care about Tech, there program cant compete with ours on any level. Our grads make more money, our girls look better, our teams our better. We have a good time, and just laugh at Tech fans when they think we care about playing(beating) them every year.

It is columnists like you that Bob Knight was referring to when he described your profession as one rung above prostitution.

Roswell Ed is funny. Especially considering all WVU did was beat an overrated (imagine that) UGAG team, just like 0-4 Colorado almost did this year, save a miracle. Colorado lost to Montana State this year, and you beat them by 1 point? With 1 minute left? I’ll try not to laugh too hard….

Hey “the facts”, are you another uninformed idiot from the Trade School, who just so happens to have a boatload of misinformation? Are you really so stupid that you don’t realize that 12 is more than 5?I mean we all know your QB can’t count to 4, maybe it is a trend over there on the flats.Only UT and Bama have more SEC titles than Georgia(13 & 21 respectively). Then to top it off, you have won 1 ACC title, with FSU getting the nod in 98 because of head to head results. That means that you have 1/2 as many conference championships as UGA . For people that are supposed to be so smart, y’all sure do have a problem with counting, next time you can use your fingers and toes to help! They cant count but they can be terrorists! GO DAWGS!!

Cane your point is mute. Va.Tech beat the Trade School by 51, Miami beat Va. Tech by 34, and then The Trade school beat Miami in Miami, comparing scores from other teams in other games means absolutely nothing.I will try not to laugh too hard at the Trade School and their ineptness against UGA.I will try not to laugh too hard and the fact that your QB can’t count,( 4 comes after 3 ).

Ladies and Gentlemen. The issue is not Georgia or Georgia Tech. The issue is illegal drug use by football players. I do not think it is right for us tax payers to pay for a kids education and have them take advantage of the system to get bigger and stronger so they can make it in the pros if they are going to use drugs. They certainly should not be treated any differently than your average teenager out working for a living and getting caught taking illegal drugs. Let them work and pay for the opportunity themselves. Makes no difference what school they attend. The NCAA should suspend any and all for one year -1st offence- and be dismissed from school if it occurs again. The penalty for illegal drug usuage should be taken out of the hands of individual schools. That makes it fair to all…….

It’s amazing how pillow biters like Ramble ON! come on here and trash a UGA player and a great coach like Mark Richt. I guarantee he wasn’t here when Reuben Houston was busted with his 62 pounds of pot. The jealousy of Tech fans is comical.

This is a sad story and there are many more. He has a gift to be able to play a sport for a living. I hope he gets his life in order.

Reading some of the responses makes me believe some of the authors have problems too.

So Georgia is at fault for Thurman? So you think anyone else would have let him in in UGA gave him the boot? Only about 20.

Ramble On claims that god doesn’t exist because bad things happen to good people, i.e. David Pollack, and vice versa…

Doesn’t he realize that, by appealing to a sense of right and wrong and making moral judgments he is in fact providing proof of God’s existence? For if in fact there is a moral law that can be appealed to, then there MUST be a moral law giver AKA God…
