Falcons unmasked at Saints’ party

Jeff Schultz

Flowery Branch — I hate to ruin the moment here. I mean, it’s so easy to get caught up in the warm embrace of the New Orleans Saints’ return home the other night, especially with ESPN slamming it over your head every 12 seconds. But you might have missed something:

The last time the Falcons looked this embarrassing on a Monday night, Arthur Blank felt compelled to issue apologies three years ago to ABC, the fan base and anybody who ever walked into Home Depot for a role of duct tape.

Has that been lost on everybody?

Every conceivable Falcons’ flaw that was masked in wins over Carolina and Tampa Bay was unmasked in New Orleans.

It was like seeing the “before” picture of Jessica Simpson in that Proactiv commercial.

The offensive line couldn’t pass block — again. Receivers couldn’t get open and dropped passes when they did — again. Michael Vick overthrew and underthrew and lacked any sense of rhythm — again. For the third straight week, a field goal was blocked, as was a punt. The Falcons already have two special teams coaches. Maybe now they need to add a field goal protection guru.

If the Falcons aren’t necessarily the team that managed only two first downs and three punts on their first four possessions against the Saints, they’re certainly not the wrecking ball that rushed for 558 yards against Tampa Bay and Carolina. Dude, they have issues.

This doesn’t mean they won’t make the playoffs (they will). It doesn’t mean the Saints will make the playoffs (they won’t). (Clip and save.)

But how this bunch reacts to being made to look so pedestrian — and a pedestrian under a bus — will help define this season.

Jim Mora said he told his players in the aftermath of the 23-3 loss to the Saints: “There will be a lot of people who will offer you up excuses.” About the environment, the fact the rest of the globe was pulling against them, etc.

He also told them not to fall into that trap: “We’re still responsible to play to a certain standard, regardless of the circumstances. We’ve got to play better. That’s what mature and successful teams do.”

Things fall apart, and everybody looks for the easy answer. Romantics get swallowed up by the Saints’ return to the Superdome. Short-sided knuckleheads fall back on the standard: It’s all Michael Vick’s fault.

Vick wasn’t faultless Monday. But Y.A. Title couldn’t have made a difference behind that offensive line and with those receivers, who were long on thumbs and short on separation. So let’s not even play that Matt Schaub-is-better card, OK?

Vick doesn’t block. He doesn’t catch. (In that respect, he fit in with everybody else.) But his 12-for-31 performance reinforced suspicions that he has little to fall back on when his legs can’t carry him out of trouble.

Clearly, this is still an offense in transition, and nobody is certain what the finished product is supposed to look like. Last week, when we all were praising the running game, Mora said: “Teams will adjust, and we will be forced to adjust again.”

He then went out of his way to compliment the passing attack, even though the Falcons had thrown for only 232 yards in two games, and added: “There is going to come a time when we are not going to be able to run the ball for 200 yards a game and we are going to depend on the passing game, and I feel confident that it is ready to go.”

But it isn’t. It wasn’t. And suddenly we see the flaws. Questions about the offensive coordinator, Greg Knapp, will resurface, and should. The week before, Knapp was credited for adding the wrinkle of the option to the Falcons’ offense. But Monday he failed to find a way to counter whatever the Saints were doing.

A football team doesn’t lose 23-3 because the world is rooting for a nice story. Twenty-point losses aren’t about one subplot or one quarterback or one dropped pass in the end zone by the tight end.

A team loses 23-3 when several flaws all show up at once. Somehow, that got lost in New Orleans in the postgame glow.

Why do the Falcons run play action when it’s first and goal from the 1? Why don’t they let Dunn try to punch it in (or maybe Griffith)? I just don’t get it.

The special teams is horrible, particularly the field goal team. Three blocks in as many games is just unacceptable.

anybody. Did this clown predict Atlanta would be in the playoffs last year?

We have beaten an 0-3 and a 1-2 team. Same S, diff year and this bozo (take a bow Jeff) predicts that Atlanta will be in the playoffs.

We should be fine. I do think we need to fix our red zone offense and special teams flaws. As I thought, kicker is the only problem. Coach D better get this fixed and quick. Also, the WRs were horrid, dropping at least 5 catchable balls. Come on Ste, get your boys playing better or heads will roll on this coaching staff…

I saw Big Alge lined up in the backfield in the Red Zone. Is it time to find a “Refidgerator Perry” to handle those “move the pile” situations? Heck, give to Grady Jackson.

Vick is a real threat with his legs and Schaub is a threat with his arm. Why not get the best of both men by using Schaub at QB and Vick as a roving WR? That would allow Schaub to throw to Vick, handoff to Vick, and even pitch to Vick giving him the option to throw. IMO- that would give the Falcons a double threat and would require defenses to spread out more to cover the variety of plays that could happen. I just feel that NFL defenses are figuring out how to stop our run like the Saints did and when they do- we are left with nothing. We absolutely MUST have a good passing attack if we are to be a Superbowl contender and Vick does not appear to be the man for the job.

What a pathetic performance by the Falcons. In spite of the media hype and emotionalism of the Saints return to the Dome, they revealed some serious weaknesses in their quest for the playoffs.

Is Mora on drugs? Seriously, he appears to be in a medicated state designed to mellow him out and deal with the anger he displayed his first two years. In watching the game I didn’t think Mora even looked like he cared. Something’s changed with Mora, and I want to know what it is.

Yep. Good column. Hope it’s all fixable, but I have some doubts. It appears this team is not built for passing success or a slow field.

The Falcons have to be able to execute a basic passing game. Down and outs, curls, short slants, etc. And catch the damn ball. If they could do just that, it would take a lot of pressure off of the whole offense. Just the basic routes, they can’t execute them. If Vick throws in the flats, it is a 50/50 proposition.

Who IS this guy Jeff??? Takes a shot at the city of New Orleans because of the ESPN commentary? Who cares what they said — come and see the city for yourself before you opine from your ivory “flowery branch” tower that we don’t deserve your attention. The people of New Orleans — resilient folks with a true sense of LOYALTY (we know all about the emptiness of Hawks games in your city of 5 million +) — kicked dirty bird a** last night and that’s that. And to say on the strength of the Falcons’ performance under pressure last night that they — not the Saints — will certainly make the playoffs “(clip and save)” ?? Falcons fans: here is this buy’s column from the 21st:

“The Saints are 2-0. That’s nice. But they’ve beaten the Browns and Packers, the Rice and Temple of the NFL. Falcons-Saints games tend to be close. But three points? Please. Go ahead and inhale. Falcons cover easily.”

Now he predicts that the Falcons, but not the Saints, will certainly make the playoffs?

Bottom line the team got owned. Defense stunk and no blitz, layoff cover 2, are we to believe losing Abraham gives us no pass rush. Something taught in pop warner is always block down to the closest man to the ball, so the idoit on the end of the line blocks to the outside and lets the man get in and block the extra point. This is basic football and Mora says they coached it right! Receivers please learn to catch and make a move to get open. We saw the old Vick because the line stinks and when he gets hit he gets scared and watches the rush first. Seriously it looked like he looked last year against TB and Carolina. This team needs to destroy the Cardinals and regain the swagger.

Nawlins-whodat,

You might also note that, according to ESPN, no team that lost 13 games in a season and then started 3-0 the next season reached the playoffs. Enjoy your big win because the Panthers are going to bring the Saints back down to earth next week.

Good column Jeff. Although I do not necessarily agree on the notion that Atlanta (and not New Orleans) will make the playoffs. Although the Falcons problems are many, the biggest one that often gets overlooked is that of coaching. Coaches are responsible for coming up with the proper game plans, schemes, having the “correct” personnel in place, and holding everyone accountible for the performance (or lack thereof). The Falcons game plan for the Saints was clearly flawed because we did virtually nothing to stop them in any phase of the game. It appeared that no adjustments were made at the half to counter anything that they did. If the coaches do not put their players in the best possible positon to win, then it really doesn’t matter how Pro Bowl players that are on your team, you will be exposed and beaten in the NFL…as was the case on Monday night. The defense gets a pass this week and should be given a lot of credit. I despise the prevent defense that Atlanta plays regularly, but those guys played a great game in spite of not getting any help from the offense and special teams. As for having the right personnel in place, does the offensive line we currently have in place have what it takes to excel in the playoffs? I think not. They obviously excel in the running game, but their pass protection is just bad. The team did an outstanding job in the offseason/draft in addressing many of the needs of this team, however, the offensive line and their pass protection has been an issue for the past few years and the personnel we have in place is suspect at best. Denver runs a similiar offense with the cut blocking scheme, but it appears their QB has far more time to throw the ball than Mike Vick does here in Atlanta. This does not mean the offensive line is totally bad, because they do have some good games where Mike has significant protection, but the issue is consistency. They do not duplicate the same performance week in and out. This brings us to the last point and that is the issue of accountibility. With all of the offensive firepower that Atlanta has at its disposal, this team should be putting way more points on the board. If the players are not executing, then bench them for the players that are prepared to step up. Is this an issue with Knapp? The play calling certainly leaves much to be desired. And regardless of which camp you suscribe to, there is no excuse for Mike Vick to be as poor in his passing skills as he is with this years of experience in the NFL - period! It doesn’t matter whether he is a pocket passer or not, but that he is able to complete the few passes he does throw in a game. That is part of the job description and is a MUST for any team who aspires to get to the Super Bowl and win it. In the end, that is not even a Mike Vick issue, its a coaching issue. If any player is above corrective action, then do you really have control of your team as a coach? Probably not. Ike must be motivated to improve that area of his game or else face consequences. What about Knapp? What about Donatell? And now, what about Joe D?

I wish Jim Mora, his coaching staff, and the team well, however, until these issues are faced head on and dealt with, the Falcons will NEVER win a Super Bowl…regardless of who is at quarterback. (Clip and save)

Boy I knew it, here cone the “sky is falling” haters. Nothing as predictable as the Atlanta “fan” This was bound to happen and I blogged that before the game.

This was a replay of the championship game (a mere 19 games ago “fans”) The Falcons ran the ball to get there and when they got there they forgot about running the ball first.

The passing game is no mystery. Crump is obviously still hurting and the WR’s (excepting Jenkins) do not run precise routes and don’t work hard enough to seperate from the coverage. They’re coached to do it correctly but in the game they don’t do it and they still play.

No excuse whatsoever for the kicking game. Once that punt was blocked it was on. They’re probably embarrassed but no matter. They’re still a good team. Looking at the schedule many would have predicted a 1-2 start. We’re 2-1 so stop boo hooing. It’s O.K.

Sometimes emotion DOES matter, especially before Thanksgiving, when games take on a diffrent atmosphere. Three recent examples:

Week 1, 2003: Buffalo 31 New England 0

After losing Lawyer Milloy in the offseason, New England is upset and Buffalo, charged by Milloy’s revenge, beat the eventual Super Bowl champions.

Week 1, 2005: New Orleans 23 Carolina 20

Katrina flavored win #1. In Charlotte, the Saints, quarterbacked by AARON BROOKS!!!!!!, defeat a team that would make it to the NFC Championship game.

Week 8, 2005: NY Giants 36 Washington 0

Days after losing beloved owner Wellington Mara, the Giants devour a listless, offensively enept-seeming football team, in a teary, emotional stadium. Sound familiar? BTW…Washington made it farther in the playoffs last year.

The point being, you bandwagoneers need to shut up and start rooting for the Ravens-Eagles-Saints-Bengals, or whomever it is you flavor of the monthers choose to worship. I would rather 10 TRUE fans be in the Dome on Sundays and the rest of you Shaubettes kneel at your dual posters of Brady-Rothlesberger(aka Rocky Dennis) holding hands while wearing motorcycle helmets and Movado watches. You morons make me sick. You are probably all Tech fans. Or maybe its Skip Bayless under different screen names.

Hey asdfds , those teams weren’t 0-3 and 1-2 when we played them, and if I’m not mistaken, everybody has made the excuse that when Atlanta beat Carolina, somehow it didn’t count because Steve Smith didn’t play. Give me a break. Atlanta is still a very good team, they will indeed make the playoffs. They ran into an emotional time bomb last night. I think any team would’ve lost last night. Nobody was going to beat the Saints, not last night.

The Saints gameplan was simple: Stop the run and make the Falcons win with the passing game. A simple but effective strategy. Will Michael Vick and Co. ever be capable of shouldering that load? There’s little or no evidence now they can. andy

So sad……did anybody else notice the Falcons did not have a quarterback?????

There was a running back (that led the team with 57 rushing yards) in the QB position, but he had no control of himself or the team!!!! Wonder why the coaches allowed him to pretend to be a quarterback???? If was supposed to be a joke, it was, but nobody is laughing. So sad, too bad. It is painful to watch….but that’s my team. We the fan in Atlanta want a winner we want more than just to make the play off we want to win it all. Here are some must doe’s for Mora out of this scheme on offense because the team is already build passing the ball around to all receiver not just #83.Reciver must learn to get open (must).Must find a plays for this offense line can pass block in this scheme. Our offense lineman can zone block in the run game. The weakness is you can’t zone block in the passing game. This team need to Set’s of lineman run and pass.#61 is only zone run blocking he can’t pass block get him out of there.Run routes to get open that the offense can hold up to if they can. Deep routes are out unless the blocking is there.Mora work on receiver getting open First.Donatell if you don’t put pressure on the passer they kill us. you must work on pressure on passer when Abe in not in the game. You waited to late to send heat on the passer. They ran on coleman side a lot last nite work on that.Other team will watch the tape from monday nite game and see our weakness. Mora Knapp, Donatell time to coach.Time to fill the holds.Knapp the passing game from blocking to the routes they run to JUST GETTING OPEN is the offense weakness. Field goal kicking team need some real work. Coaches do your jobs . The TEAM RUN THE PLAYS YOU CALL ON BOTH SIDE OF THE BALL GET TO WORK!

When the Falcons was winning, where were these clowns? Some of the true fans are here, but all these damn so call expert are back and they don’t know anything! Matt Schaub you jerks, wouldn’t had a chance! Vick put the team in scoring opportunity 3 times. He threw two passes too Crumpler, in the end zone that he dropped. The bomb he threw too Lelie that we scored on. Got the team in scoring position again from the goal line only to have O.C. to call a damn pass play twice! And then run the option spread on third down!

Lets recap - They have coaches who cannot coach. Receivers that cannot catch. High-priced players who rarely play (Hartwell and Abraham). A QB who is a random throw generator (some great, some crap). An O line that sometimes blocks and bad special teams.

Smells like another 8-8 season to me.

I said this BEFORE the Saints game, that the time would come when a team shuts down our running game and once again dares Vick to beat them with his passing. As always, Vick fails because he is simply the most inaccurate and fundamentally flawed PASSING QB in the NFL and perhaps in the history of the game. He’s simply a very fast guy who can wind up a throw a long, tight spiral. His baseball throwing motion and height is a handicap when being blitzed so he doesn’t have the vision, understanding, or accuracy to find and accurately deliver the ball to receivers when under intense pressure.

We’ve seen this identical game plan many times by previous—younger—Tampa, Eagles and last season’s Bear game when the defense loads up the line up scrimmage and attack Vick without any fear whatsoever of him beating them with his passing skills. Opposing teams WANT our QB to throw the football and this is sad for an NFL QB.

Michael Vick has not progressed at all as a passer and we just have to accept the fact that as long as he is the pilot of our offense, it is only a matter of when, not if, that a team will shut us down.

Despite his many running skills, he is simply not a championship caliber NFL QB!

Before everyone counts Arizona as a win, remember we beat only them 6-3 in the last meeting at home. Our team has a case of Monday Night Derrier Irritation, but that may not translate into points. Like a golfer in a birdie drought, the Falcons offense has been inept and hard to count on since the Mora/Vick era began. Remember, Atlanta dominated the 1st two games of the season but didn’t put up many points in either. Dan Reeves and a good defensive coordinator would likely be much further along at this point.

Look for a squeaker on Sunday.

I agree with your column for the most part. I don’t agree that the Falcons will make the play-offs and the Saints will not. I think both teams will find it hard to make the play-offs. This team is not ready. The entire coaching staff is weak. No, I am not sold on Jim Mora. Has everyone forgotten that the head coach was the same guy who had to call the head office during a play off game to see how a tie would effects the team’s play off hopes. How could the head coach not know this?! The head coach should know what is needed before the game. First of all who in the hell plays for a tie. Second…it’s is the players job to play the game. It is the coaches job to know what needs to be done before the game and not during it. Know all of the scenerios! Also…has this staff ever heard of a back up game plan. Step A,B,C and if needed D. This staff has not heard of adjusting!! If there “A” game plan does not work they will come out in the second half and continue doing the same crap that did not work in the first half. These guys are a joke. Why in the hell are we trying to run college plays in the NFL? Plays that worked for Vick at VT. Give me a break!! Vick will never be Peyton Manning but I think he could be decent or efficent if he had an offensive line that not only run blocks but can actually pass block. Why do we keep sticking with these guys year after year? They suck, suck, and triple suck!! Also…who gives a damn about a reciever with jet engines but can not get seperation from a DB. Say what you will about Vick, but please watch his recievers next game and tell me when they are open. They looked horrible against N.O. I team that has the weakest DB’s in the NFC. I love the Falcons but I relly think they have a long long way to go. Jim Mora is only fooling himself if he thinks these guys are going anywhere. Does anyone really care if Atlanta leads the NFL in rushing again this year? We know that the Falcons can run the ball. When will they come up with a passing game. Only Baltimore has won a SB with a one dimensional team. They also had one of the best Defenses in NFL history. We don’t, so please find a damn passing game!!

When the ball was turned over to the Saints, Vick went to the sideline and sat on a bench, talking to no one. Most quarterbacks can be seen talking to their offensive coach or other players to discuss strategy. I truly do not believe that Vick is a thinking quarterback who will ever learn the game. His one year of college experience is evident.

I think the main issue is not the fact that the team got beat. Kansas City smoked us and we managed to make it to the NFC championship game. We are going to lose some games. We got that. I’d rather go 10-6 than 16-0 in the regular season so we know that no one can be taken lightly.

My main concern is how we react. My main concern is the response.

Knapp, the option is useless now. Defenses saved their blitz for AFTER the handoff was made, and then blew it up. So Knapp, time for a new play.

Lelie is emerging as a viable deep threat. Lets use that. I would rather see us be creative and progressive this week on offense. Our run game is so strong (if last week was an abberation) that we should have the most potent play-action pass in the league.

We responded after Kansas City, showed backbone, and went to Denver and beat them. Now, can we respond, at home, and beat Arizona?

Also, I want to challenge the fans. I understand that the Superdome on Monday was a special event, but I sat there in the Superdome and have NEVER heard the crowd in Atlanta be 1/10th as loud. Maybe I just sit in a bad section in the GADome, but can we as fans just plain get louder?? Cheer maybe? Or gosh forbid stand up?? Every false start penalty we get is 5 more yards their offense has to travel. LETS PARTICIPATE IN THE GAME, and NOT WATCH IT.

Fans bring it, birds bring it, see you on Sunday.

Prettt good column, Jeff.

To the Alaska guy, it’s okay to predict making or not making the playoffs. What’s that got to do with bad journalism? That’s what sports people do. It may be a little early for a prediction, but so what.

To those who are all upset that people think the sky is falling. No one is saying that. But we are saying that a bad game or atmosphere cannot really account for the Falcon’s play. Their inability to adjust or make a game of it is rather disturbing.

Last yr when they were going in the tank the true believers wouldn’t accept that there were problems. Some of those still exist: a RB at QB, flakey running game built on undersized darters, poor receiving core. The OL is barely adequate. The defense when healthy is good enough to win games. The coaching staff has got some problems. It’s beginning to look like Mora is in a little over his head.

It will be interesting to see which way the Falcons go. Will they fix problems and bounce back or are they as flawed as they looked against New Orleans.

This is a good article. Falcons have the right pieces and are coming together as a team and should make the playoffs this year. Most of the problems are not Vick’s fault and I am not a Mike Vick apologist. I agree with Whopper Dawg, the most glaring problem was the routes run by the receivers. It is up to them to get some separation. If you look at some of the routes run, my twelve year old son could cover them in the back yard. On one play, it was either White or Jenkins near the end zone, the receiver was running an out pattern, but he simple pivoted to the middle and then just leaked out to the sideline. What happened to faking hard to the middle and then cutting hard to the sideline to get separation. Isn’t this just fundamental stuff.

Everyone was going nuts talking superbowl when we beat Tampa and Carolina, and at that time, I said “calm down, its only two wins” and now that we were distroyed by NO, I say it again, calm down, its only one loss.

I know Mora does not want any excuses, but once the punt was blocked, it was nearly impossible to overcome that kind of momentum combined with the emotion.

We have a few problems and its NOT VICKS FAULT!!! The O line could not block a Pop Warner D line and our recievers cant catch a cold. Even Crump who is always there to bail out our recievers had butter fingers.

Our D line could not get pressure on the QB.

The good news is that our D line will get a boost in the near future with the return of ” the FREAKIN’ MAN” Abraham.

I believe that this team is NOT the team we watched Monday. This team is very good. Playoffs…I say yes. Our schedule is very tough, and remember, when we looked at our opening three games, we all agreed ( for the most part ) that we would be happy going 2-1 to open the season. The problem is that no one thought that NO would be our loss. Stop looking at last year ( and years before that ) and look at the teams that are here today. NO is good. Not as good as they were on Monday, but they are good. Tampa is bad…very bad. Carolina is O.K. and maybe better than that, but they are no where near as good as everyone thought going into the season.

The Falcons will win the south and go deep into the playoffs…I truly believe this. So everyone settle down and remember, we are going into week 4.

Arizona…BEWARE!!! We are PI$$ED and ready to make a statement on Sunday regardless of who your QB is.

Gregg Knapp should needs to make better half time adjustments or a plan B. Obviously he’s not creative to create a better game plan than what we saw Monday. They ran the same plays as they did in weeks prior. That’s not going to cut it. Why are all of our run plays go to the right in the zone blocking scheme. Can you throw a couple traps and misdirection plays in there to confuse the defense? Looks like a very simple game plan.

Message to Mike Vick: Very disappointing by not being able to rally the troops. When times get hard, he hides on the sideline in his own world. I don’t see him as a true leader until he can raise the team to a new level even when the odds are against them and the team is down. Get off the bench bitting ya nails(Labron) and get in your recievers faces or the lines face. Looks like he’s afraid of something. Failure? Disappointment? Leadership? I’m not sure.

I watched Jenkins on Falcons Face to Face, he looked a little scared, and lacked confidence. Roddy has always looked scared and indecisive. Any reciever that doesn’t explode with confidence sound strange to me. They all have to have confidence to go and get the ball w/one on one coverage or double. You’ll never see Mike throw the ball in double coverage unless it was a mistake.

Good Job Defense

The question I have to those of you who have played before is this: Why on every passing play was the receiver seemingly completely blanketed man-to-man? Does this mean that a) the turf was so bad that the receivers could not cut, or b) the receivers are not good enough to gain separation, or both? This is a scary thing, that any team with a competent secondary could shut down the passing game one-on-one without having to do anything special.

It was bad enough seeing Spike Lee in the booth ruminating about how evil America was, still is, and will always be…the Falcons made it worse. You would almost swear if this had been a motion picture the Falcons threw the game in order for all the PC, fuzzy-wuzzy folks at ESPn and all those pitiful souls in the SuperDome to have something to smile about when they left.

These special teams play of late are unacceptable. We can not seriously contend until these problems are address.I”ve never seen a team so short into a season have so many kicks blocked, especially a punt & a kick in the same game!! Also these first round recievers are starting to look like busts. Everyone wants to point the finger at Vick but I didn”t see any seperation and on the rare ocassions they did get open they dropped it. They made the Saints corners look like H.O.F.However I think the D will improve & will bail us out until the offense catches up!!!

Please watch my HBO Documentary debuting Friday, September 29th, “After The Whoopin: A Requiem In 4 Quarters” Part one begins with disillusioned New Orleans fans going batty and lifting umbrellas after a Drew Brees-Reggie Bush 27 yard screen pass gives the Saints an early 7-0 lead. Things go wrong, horribly wrong, after Gravy Jackson scoops up ‘Dropping A’ Deuce McAllister’s fumble and rumbles 2-yards (The only fumble return in recorded history that actually takes a whole quarter to execute) and gives Atlanta a 10-7 halftime lead. Interviews with people who blame Katrina and Dubya for not having worked in 13 years, find that these beleagured citizens heard explosions right before halftime. Was it Gravy Jacksons ample bosom they heard collapsing in the end zone?….or the GOVERNMENT…exploding the 2000 NFC West Championship plaque, located in the luxury box urinal. (Cue very bad jazz music)

Ray Nagin:” What I find odd….is that Atlanta is owned by a white man, coached by a white man, and has a white man as its GM…and always beats a team whose city is majority…African-American.”(Cue even worse jazz music)

Michael Vick throws three touchdown passes in a game for the first time in his career, and Warrick Dunn floods the Superdome turf for 200 yds rushing and a touchdown, as the Falcons complete a 48-14 levee bursting on the Saints.

Local(???) resident:” The Saints have done NOTHIN for New Orleans….especially black people..just like FEMA. Ive been living in the Four Seasons hotel in New York for a damn year, and Im sick of filet mingnon, if I was white Id get at least a bottle of Dom…well..at least Aaron Brooks is gone.” (Cue a local(???) musician(????????)playing out of a cardboard paper towel roll, wearing a paper bag…as an overhead shot of Michael Haynes running down the sideline in the 1991 Wild Card game slowly fades on the screen, while the slightly edited voice of Kanye West proclaims “Sean Payton dont care about black people”

I’ll be at the game wearing a Crumpler jersey, so I may not make it back to Atlanta.

But at least I’ll see the Falcons go to 3-0 because I think we have the pair necessary to play Falcons football amongst the events and emotion surrounding the game.

Two wins out of the gate against opponents with high expectations is wonderful. On Monday, we find out if we meet the mark of a good team - WE WIN THE GAMES WE SHOULD WIN. Falcons move to 3-0, and on Tuesday the rest of the US will start to realize how legitimate this team is.

By bushwacker September 22, 2006 10:28 AM I thought I was the only one who noticed the Saints have beat the 2 worse teams in the NFL while the Falcons MAN HANDLED 2 of the best teams. First of all that game was rigged, but on a serious note NO TEAM was going to beat N.O. on there first home game. Second of all calm down Falcons fans, if you dont think that atmosphere affected the play of the Falcons then you are wrong. I love how everyone blames Vick, but can anyone tell me where we were with out Vick? Vick is an good but like all QB’s he needs protection and WR’s. Vick threw some bad passes but I would much rather have him than Eli the overrated “pocket passer”. Defense and running wins champ’s if you want amazing passing and nothing to show become a Colts fan.

Did ANYBODY believe the first game back in the superdome was not going to be a New Orleans win? This was the most overblown bunch of crap I ever saw, and I’m an old man that has seen tons of crap. The people of New Orleans will now be able to survive because the Saints are back in the superdome, please….ESPN and the NFL just took advantage of the New Orleans situation for their own benifit. What has been unmasked is a roster that is becoming a rest home for so called injured NFL stars. Some of these guys need to suck it up and go to work. I refuse to pay for tickets next year for a team that goes out and gets good players only to have them live out the season on the injured list every week. Then at the end of the season listen to a bunch of excuses about not having everyone healthy last year but next year we’ll have everyone back and we’ll win the Super Bowl. I heard that crap enough last year and refuse to accept it this year. I expect nothing less than than playing on the first Sunday in February this season. I sat way up in the 37th row in Charlotte and watched a defense that was second to none on September 10th and then on Monday night I saw nothing more than a 3rd or 4th place division team get waxed. In other words I saw what I witnessed through the last 10 games last year. Am I angry? You bet I am. That team wasn’t ready to play. That was poor coaching, poor individual play and the worst thing was no team play at all. I know Mr. Blank doesn’t just go off the deep end and fire people but after that game I would understand if he did. Am I disappointed? You bet I am. I expect nothing more this Sunday other than a blowout.

ebineezer:

How much do you actually know about the city of New Orleans. If you may have noticed, our city thrives on our European-American Culture. Basically, if you know anything about European Sports, then you know the passion and the everyday feelings those fans have for any of their teams in any sports. Thats what it’s like here in New Orleans for the Saints. I’m assuming you are an ATL resident, so between having the Falcons, Braves, Hawks, Thrashers, Force, U of GA, and Georgia Tech, it can be hard to isolate such significance to one team and its city. But for us, other than the Hornets for the last couple of years, The Voodoo for the last couple of years, and LSU (no offence to UNO or Tulane) but the Saints is what’s been us for 40 years, like Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, etc…Now, combine that with the Euro-American Sports Fan approach mentioned earlier, and you can start to feel the ideal of Louisianian, especially a New Orleanian when it comes to the Saints. I mean, if the symbols of a city does not come back, what do the residents have to build upon?

Before Monday nite, Atlanta Fans were REALLY cocky, confident, trash talkers; which is perfectly fine when you love your team. However, now that Monday has come and gone, a lot of Atlanta Fans are finger pointing, claiming the game was rigged, etc. My point: Most Falcon Fans are Fareweather Fans. Only love the Falcons when they’re winning. New Orleans Fans PRE-KATRINA have ALWAYS LOVED the SAINTS. Win or Lose. We are loyal to our City, Colors etc. That being said. if you follow a team in this day and age- each week is a roller-coaster ride. look, falcon fans, people complaining about the team is a good sign- not a bad sign. it means there is interest, there are expectations, there is emotion. the NFL isn’t what it was 50 yrs ago- local franchises built pretty much on part-time players who sold insurance and cars during the offseason, and the fans love of the sport and the city they were born in and lived in until somebody stuffed them in a box - it is now a huge national(getting global)business , and it expects you, the fan, who moves around just as much as the players, to pay top-dollar to be involved. it has leveled the playing field through the free agency/ salary cap structure and bad-team- drafts-first mechanism. you can call it parity or you can call it mediocrity stemming from rosters that are too thin of quality players, but that is what you get, and you at least have the “hope” that next year can always be different. except for a couple break-out franchises each year (and a few organizations that get it right for a multi-year run), everybody else is in the stew-pot, one injury away from a losing streak. The monday-morning quarterbacking, the elation after victories and the whining and frustration after defeats, at least it means people are paying attention. we love winners but we also like to stare at car-wrecks too, so we bond and get comic relief from our own problems when our team stinks, and we torch them in effigy to make us feel better. the NFL loves it, in fact, i’m surprised they didn’t make Vince McMahon the new commissioner, what with the goofy uniforms and the cheerleader/lapdancer shows on the sidelines (hey, some of you conspiracy theorists actually DO believe the game was staged!….). So it has all become a big show, and we have moved the show from the open skies and weather to the climate controlled circus tent. i mean, ten, twenty years ago i would have had to sit down with pen and paper and write out this stupidity (so i probably wouldn’t have done it(, but now i can get instant gratification and be part of the show myself. so homers, enjoy the spectacle, go buy a jersey with somebody else’s name on it and accomplishments associated with it, but let the cynics perform their role too…

More impressions and questions on the NOLA “no va” (no go.)

Where were the linebackers? I’m a major Brooking fan, but I only saw him in film on a couple of plays… when he’s usually everywhere the ball is. Were they reading run & the Saints passing was successful? I’m still trying to figure out how Coleman or Shropshire didn’t get a hand up…ever.

I think Vick is great, but he has never been adequately protected. He can’t be the pocket passer McNabb has evolved into if there is no pocket. He IS passing better than last year, but his WR and O Line have to step up. That being said, a good Vick scamper is like a roller coaster: you love the thrill but cringe in fear of injury at the same time.

Crumpler has earned respect over the past three years, Lelie has great skills, and Jenkins will get there, but I’ve never seen any consistency with Roddy White in real game situations.

I’m voting for “You Can’t be Jerious” to shoulder some of the load, but we are surely missing TJ inside the Red Zone. But they need a lane. What made the NOLA DLine so much more impenetrable than TB or Carolina?

If anyone saw the game live, they probably have a better view of the real problems on the field than those of us relying on ESPN cameras.

Special teams gave up ten points between the two blocked kicks. Of course the blocked touchdown catch was the reason for the field goal being there to be blocked in the first place. The refs called the Falcons super tight and gave the Saints the benefit of the doubt. Take away those factors and this would have been a close game. The Falcons still wouldn’t have won but it would have been close.

The defense did a good job. If Abraham had been in there it would have been an ugly day for Brees who looked scared had trouble finding an open man much of the time despite having as much time as an NFL QB could want.

Offensive playcalling was awful. No serious attempt to establish the run was made before they went to the play action stuff so that the Saints D could just key on Vick the whole time. As hard as they were coming after Vick, there were all kinds of lanes up the middle for a draw play or two in passing situations. Why not use Norwood straight ahead for short yardage? The play action on first and goal at the one was completely stupid.

This game was a lot closer than the score reflected. I expect that when the Saints come to the Georgia Dome they are going to be in for a very unpleasant surprise.

Good Point, this IS IN FACT the 1st time the Superdome sold out, however, it doesn’t discount the loyalty of the Saints Fans. We haven’t had a real winning season in ages, but we continue to root for and defend our SAINTS. Even when we where the so called AINTS we would show up IN DROVES with paper bags……still supporting. Arthur Blank had to literally give away tickets to get Falcon fans to return to the dome. And if Mike Vick & associates don’t make it to the playoffs, watch how fast all the so called dirty bird fans scatter.

lilflu, Please get your facts straight before questioning the loyalty and support of the Saints fans..this year was the first time the entire season was sold out…people bought every seat in the dome for the season..previously we had only sold out 38-40 straight games,a game at a time. Forgive me if i do not have the exact #, but I am close, you see i have spent the last year living in MY trailer(thanks for nothing FEMA)in my driveway. The Saints with Brooks as QB selling out 2 straight is amazing to me,y’all griping aboutr Vick , WOW try suffering through the last years with his cousin..it was hard to watch, but we were there, every game, enduring the stupid play calling, penalties, fumbles…you name it we did it…badly.Saints fans have has very little to cheer about for years. Don’t know if we’ll make the playoffs, don’t even know if we will have a winning record, but i do know that Monday night was incredible, i was there. The game wasn’t fixed, that’s ridiculous, for once, and it’s been awhile, trust me, it felt GOOD to be a saints fan.Bless you boys, you made a long suffering city proud. Atlanta fans, hey,1 game, you still have most of a season, if I were you I’d feel pretty confident in the team you have, you know they are capable of winning the division, the NFC if things fall right. Take it from some one who has been through many dismal seasons, 1 game does not make your season, or ruin it. Iam proud of the saints, think our coach has them headed in the right direction,y’all you have been headed there, ypu will recover and get right back on track, you know, i may not like it but i know it too.See y’all in Nov!

Yo’ E.B…… You said: “The very fact that he has been selected to 3 Pro Bowls must tell you something.” Yes, it tells me he was picked for the fact that he is so “popular” and a draw on TV and in the stands…..not that he was one of the best QBs during those seasons…… In case you didn’t notice, Vick had the most rushing yardage on his team. He completedonly 12 of 31 attempts at passing! For the season so far, he is 32 of 69 (47%.) Vick is unique athlete. he just can’t perform as a QB. Can he learn??? Only the coaches know for sure, and they aren’t going to tarnish the golden calf. Unfortunately, with all the running Vick is again doing, he could get seriously hurt and possibly suffer a career ending “hit.” Sorry E.B. I know you want to support Vick, I do too, but you got to face facts. Blank and company have not yet come to grips as to “who is Mike Vick and how do we use his many talents to create a great QB?” Chill E.B. not everybody hates Vick.

The Falcons will be one of the top teams in the league this year. Everyone has a bad game or two and we just got one out of our systems. But since we are all arm chair GM’s today, here’s my take on the Dirty Birds.

Norwood averages 34.5 yards per return on kickoffs against Saints, 5.9 yards per carry from backfield on the season, and he gets 1 handoff all night on Monday. He was a monster in pre-season of screens and sump passes, yet he’s only caught 1 pass for the regular season, and they did not throw his way at all on Monday night. Norwood is lightning in a bottle, instant offense waiting to happen, but the coaches can’t figure out a way to get him in the game. This guy could potentially be the most explosive player in the league, probably averages 25 yds per touch, and we do not use him at all. Ridiculous.

Dunn is the NFL’s leading rusher going into the game, but he gets only 13 carries against N.O. He only has one catch all season, and wasn’t even thrown at on Monday night. This even though everyone knows that he is even better in space than he is between the tackles. Ridiculous and screams bad game scheme and play calling.

Koenan isn’t the only kicker who can’t make field goals when they are blocked. There was No reason to change kickers, and he has done more than enough to earn the job. All the time he was having trouble with the field goals he was still outstanding in the other aspects of the kicking game which speaks very highly of his composure. Didn’t shank a punt or a field goal in spite of being booed by his home crowd.(shame on all of you) 4 of his 6 misses were blocked and you can hardly blame him for trying to adjust to the increased pressure from opponents special teams. Ridiculous and rather flighty to bring in Anderson to take over, even if he is a living legend.

Not one linebacker has a single sack on the year. Not one linebacker has a single interception for the year. The are not involved in the passing defense. No pass rush, and no real help against receivers wandering through the middle of the field. Linebacker in the NFL are supposed to blitz. Every team but the Falcons does. It made sense not to send them when the secondary was suspect, but we arguably have the best secondary in the league now, no reason to have three linebackers dropping into coverage against two receiver sets. Ridiculous.

This is a poorly coached team right now. In spite of that the Defense has only allowed 1 touchdown, and the offense can still look devastating at times. A good coach with this personnel would be living la vida loca. A great coach would be a consensus Superbowl favorite. The Falcons right now are an after thought in the league. But I gurantee that King Arthur knows what I know. Expect things to change for the better real soon, one way or the other.

Falcons 12-4, NFC South Champs. NFC Champs? Superbowl Champs? It could happen………..

Forgot one,

Has anyone seen a Falcons receiver run a slant? Isn’t that what most teams do when the safties come up to the line and the corners play press coverage? Especially if the O-line is a little suspect in the pass blocking department? Isn’t the slant a staple of the West Coast offense and a major reason for the high completion percentages of WC quaterbacks? Is it possible that the pass play calling is having a detrimental effect on Vick’s passing stats? Isn’t there a wide receiver screen designed so that the reciever gets at least one blacker to help him break away from the initial coverage? Isn’t Greg Knapp a west Coast offense guru? Or is he just…Ridiculous.

I think you were to easy on the Falcons. I saw 2 major flaws. Lack of Mental toughness and secondly I think the offensive Coordinator needs some real outing. On the 2 yard line and can’t call a quick play to running back or quarterback sneak instead chooses a slower developing play that ends up with Vick being sacked . No help from the sidelines to pick up the tempo of the game. It is no wonder Vick and the offense has little consistency.

Sure, The Falcons played about as poorly as ever and the play calling was pathetic. The author of this article skimmed over this point. The last people making any excuses are the Falcons. Monday Night’s game proved that there was no plan B if the run-option play that worked so well against TB wasn’t effective. Another thing that is clear is that teams will concentrate on stopping the run and make Mike Vick beat them with his arm in which case there is a better than average chance of beating the Falcons. Unless there is drastic improvement in the passing game it could be a long year.

I feel that things will be a lot different when that Saints come into Atlanta. Better field (well, at least until next year) and not nearly the emotion siding with the Saints. And for those of you that keep complaining about Vick’s passing ability, HE’S NOT A DROP BACK QUARTERBACK!!! Tell you what. I’ll take the stat of “W” over every other stat in the game. The turf? that’s the best excuse? Yeah emotion was powerful,I was there.unless you have lived here, you have no idea what the struggles here have been. I’m not just talkin’ Katrina either…I’m tlakin’ YEARS of absolutly pathetic efforts by many players(they are now gone), the coaches(they are now gone),the owner, he’s still here but was taken to the woodshed by Tagliabue. Monday night was not due to the turf. it was not due to “fix” by whoever is supposed to do that sort of thing. It was one team out coaching, out hitting, out playing, and yes some unbelievable ,fantastic emotion, and I, for one enjoyed the heck out of it!Not one, well maybe 3 or 4 of the people on this actually admitted the falcons were beaten in every possible phase of the game Monday night…they were. The vegas line didn’t beat the falcons, the ESPN announcers didn’t beat them, the refs didn’t beat them, the NEW ORLEANS SAINTS beat them….soundly…grow up, you lost A game…most of you just couldn’t take living here and being a Saints fan….we are fans..We get mad ,we sound off,we suffer horrible, embarrassing defeats, yet we helped carry them to victory Monday night. You were beaten by a team that, on Monday night WAS better, it may hurt to admit it but, unless you are STILL drinking, you have to at least give the Saintsa little credit…they made y’all look dazed and confused. I know you will not stay that way, you never do, you won’t,you are Atlanta.Admit it, go on and back the excellent football team you have…oh yeah, tho it may hurt, give the Saints the accolades they deserve for making a great football team look…well, bad.OK.

Boy you sure said it NOLA, can’t believe these guys. Makes us really appreciate the kind of fans we have in New Orleans. Here, even the sport writers are poor sports. Can you see Pete Finney saying the next morning, “Hey we got clobbered, but the other team we lost to won’t make the playoffs! (i.e. - Sore Loser)” Never.
