Jackets live up to role as favorites

Jeff Schultz

It’s safe to assume that the degeneration of ACC football this season has been met with some amusement on the Flats. I mean, how often does the coach at Georgia Tech enjoy more job security than the one at Miami? Or N.C. State, or Maryland, or half the conference?

The Yellow Jackets did what they were supposed to do Thursday night. They stomped an opponent, Virginia, that seemed to be begging for more footprints on their foreheads.

Now, it may be a little early to start talking about season-defining victories. But it says something that Tech actually followed a blueprint. There has been this problem in the Chan Gailey regime of inexcusable losses drowning out the occasional upset win. That’s how you end up with a case full of Humanitarian and Emerald bowl trophies, and a fan base that wants to chuck flaming slide rules when it hears the coach got a contract extension.

Thursday, the Jackets looked a cut above their past in their ACC opener, a 24-7 win over the Cavaliers. Now there’s a switch.

“It was paramount we do this — paramount,” defensive tackle Darryl Richard said. “I know there were people out there — no question — that were betting that we were going to let down and lose this game. That’s one of the things we talked about constantly this offseason. We’re tired of those types of things happening to us. We took it to a new level.”

This is what a college program is supposed to do. There was never any hint of an upset Thursday, though it always helps when the opponent doesn’t show any hint of a pulse. The Cavaliers trailed 24-0 four minutes into the third quarter.

As will be the case all season, NFL scouts turned out to watch wide receiver Calvin Johnson. Despite a double-secret leg injury, he seemed to do OK. He had touchdown catches of 58 and 66 yards, and his six catches covered almost as many yards (165) as Virginia’s offense (166).

This was the test game for the Jackets. They gave Notre Dame a run but lost, which figured. They dumped Samford and Troy, which also figured. But what Team Tease did against Virginia would begin to define its season. A win, and the Jackets could at least entertain thoughts of an upset next week in Blacksburg, Va. A loss, and it was back to flaming slide rules.

“I think everybody expected this to happen on our side,” Gailey said when asked about expectations. “But you’ve got to go do it.”

When asked if he had any uncertainty about his team opening conference play, Gailey said: “I was more concerned about the team we were playing. That’s a big, physical football team, and we’ve been playing dink and dunk teams with speed.”

The Cavaliers might be big, but they’re degenerating at a faster rate than the conference. Before the season, school officials gave coach Al Groh a new six-year deal and jumped his annual pay to $1.7 million. So what was the backup investment — 8-track tapes?

Under Groh, the Cavaliers are 21-20 in ACC games, including 2-11 against Miami, Florida State, Virginia Tech and Boston College. Had Groh gone 3-10, Virginia officials might’ve been moved to throw in a small resort in the Bahamas.

The Cavs were booed during a home loss to Western Michigan last week. That followed a narrow win over Wyoming, which followed a 25-point loss to Pittsburgh. Put it this way: Virginia is now so lightly regarded that it was the same level of underdog to Tech as Troy was the week before (17 points).

To the Jackets’ credit, they didn’t play down to that level. For now, it appears Tech is going one way while much of the conference is going the other.

“We’re trying to get to Jacksonville,” Richard said, a reference to the ACC title game.

Next week, Tech goes to Blacksburg. Defeat Virginia Tech and suddenly a trip to Jacksonville loses its ring of absurdity. Defeat Virginia Tech and suddenly the Jackets will feel quite comfortable in the ACC.

I hope that everyone is enjoying Calvin Johnson. Next year I imagine that he will be lining up against CB’s a little closer to his ability. I doubt that any of Tech’s future opponents will single cover him again. Also Reggie Ball played like a veteran QB. Keep giving him protection and who knows what can happen.

One of the game announcers for ESPN said “Reggie Ball ” needs to complete a pass to build his confidence up” . Such an assinine statement, after he just set a school record, was typical of their commentary. They seem to think that they must talk continuously throughout the game. Also, instead of talking about ACC or SEC teams they talk, at length, about Ohio State. Thank heavens for the mute button.

Oh My God!!! I hate the AJC!!!

UGA beats a minor opponent and all of their headlines are something like: LOOK HOW GREAT THE DAWGS ARE! Tech beats a 1A opponent (although a struggling one) and the AJC comes up with: LIVE UP TO ROLE AS FAVORITE?

I wish anyone would start another Atlanta newspaper. I am sure that they would have a rather large initial circulaion from the Jacket nation, alone! Ted Turner - are you listening????

Great game! I was there, watching UVA get nailed in the stands. And a bad call accounted for the one TD, and a possible Tech TD. Everybody was clicking, and everything went right for Tech. Calvin did what he does best, and Reggie had 3 total TDs (2 in the air) and no interception. I really think that this could be a great season for both of them, and a great season for a deserving team.

Senior Citizen, they talk about Ohio State because they are BETTER than ANY team the crappy ACC has to offer, especially Tech. Besides, don’t get too whiny because ol’ Herbstreet has a MANcrush on Calvin Johnson. I mean, all he talked about for one solid quarter was Calvin this, Calvin that, where he likes to eat, what kind of girls he likes to date, etc. He wasn’t hatin’ on Tech too much!

Jeff,

Easy partner, Tech beat a better than usual High School team last night. The games was over in the first 35 minutes of the game. Tech ALWAYS does well in September, then October begins the slide. By November, the fans are so desperate for junket bowl games, they will take anything.

Nice win, but we need more in November too!

Georgia Tech matches up very well with Va. Tech. GT has speed and atheletism. And, this year the team is playing with confidence and the offense has shown a lot of variety which will require Va. Tech to play a balanced defense. Also, the Ga. Tech special teams play has improved greatly. And, they have the best kicking game I have seen in years.

If Tech plays with intensity and does not turn over the ball and does not stop themselves with penalties, they will win this game.

Terrible job by the announcers or network, whichever was responsible for the extensive coverage of everything except the game. I don’t tune in to sporting events to watch the announcers in the booth. I also have a mute button but that didn’t help when we were watching a commercial and GT got an interception. CJ is a great talent and I look forward to seeing him play on Sundays. As for Mr. Ball, I suspect that when playing the better teams on their schedule, he will revert to his old self. He will lose focus, start running his mouth to both refs and opposing players, and render himself inaffective. It’s ashame too, because this could be a pretty good football TEAM!!!!!!

Way to go Jackets! Great game albeit we gave the ‘Hoos the opportunity for their TD. Gotta clean that up next week at the Hokies.

Loved the throw back uniforms and white helmets. Made me feel like a young teenager again sitting in the West stands with my dad. You can do the white helmets anytime. (speaking of white, Coach G, how about white jerseys for home games, please?)

3-1 is good, 4-1 will be a great end of September. Go Jackets!

Should have been 38-0. Ole Man Chan still wants to score a TD, then let the defense take over. Johnson should have caught 12 passes. Chan and his attitude toward offense really frustrates me. Its still a 7-5 team. Johnson looks happy, but I bet he can’t wait for next year in the pros. I can’t wait for next year when Ball will be GONE!

Normally I like Herbstreet but last night ESPN could not have been more disinterested nor disrespectful of the actual game they were supposed to be broadcasting. Granted only so much can be said about a maturing Ball, a super Johnson and a rising Nix but last night was a Buckeye Commercial they should have to pay for the air time. There is certainly not enough air time on ESPN between now a Bowl season for all Div I teams to have equal time. Fortunately Herbstreets disinterested drival, one minute praising Ball and the next praising Nix saying he was a great coach in need of players (Ball) to execute, was so bad only die hard Tech fans were tuned into the exciting as drying paint last quarter and half.I was excited I take wins wherever they come from how ever they come.

The Jackets looked good last night, I wanted Virginia but they didn’t have a chance. Regarding Herbie’s disinterest, keep in mind it was a Thursday night game with 2 unranked teams. (You should be ranked by Sunday night though). You have the national tv audience but it’s by default. And this was a Virginia team that got beat by Western Michigan last week (Western Michigan got creamed by Indiana). The VT game will be your acid test.

My dad played linebacker for Tech 75-79. Seeing those uniforms brought back some memories for he and I (I spent entire days as a kid going through old photos). I say ditch the gold helmets and go to the Thursday uniforms for the season - those rocked! Great game for Ball, Johnson and company. Yet, just like the dawgs, we won’t know how good this team is until they get a real challenge. For UGA that comes in two weeks at home against the Volunqueers, for Tech it’s a week and a day away … Hokies. I would love nothing more for both teams to reach the big game in Novemeber with no more than one loss. Last year’s game was fantastic (except the outcome) - it could be even better if there is a big BCS game on the line. Hope the Dawgs enjoy their third shutout on Saturday … see you homos in November.

Great defense Tech. Good to see Tech moving the ball. Tech’s run defense is still looking like top 10 stuff. If the offense can keep from turning the ball over (which it has) then we will see how good we are against an SEC team. BTW, tech is so bad according to you guys but last year we went 1-1 against the SEC’s elite….and the UGA game was an escape win. UGA was pushed all around the field. Ga Tech just didn’t punch it in. But as the season progresses, we’ll see how it stacks up after gobble day. The cool thing is that as November eclipses, we get to stay excited through March this year and watch Hewitt gear up with a competitive BBall team. Tech’s major sports teams are looking good!

Because Paul, talent, depth, quality is recognizable to those that know football. That is why UGA is top 10. Don’t forget Paulie, coaches vote teams into the top 10. They usually know a little more about good football teams than you do.

Tifton is right about the seating. We all know the stadium was at around 50k last night, but those club seats are always embarrassing because they sit empty as those seat holders sit in the lounge inside. That’s why most club seats are in a middle area, not right on the field. Tech is going to have to find a way to keep those seats full, and maybe closing the lounge during the game is the answer.

GT looks pretty good and I will give you props the defense looks really good. GT will be better off next year without Ball. The guy is a hot head and he can’t keep his yapper shut which is no big deal againest UVA but is a killer in the big games. I have to compliment #21, he is one hell of a player and the way it sounds a fine young man. I knew when he chose GT over UGA that we had lost a great one in a position we needed a playmaker. I would have loved to see Green, Shockly and now Stafford throw the deep ball to him and I honestly believe if CJ would have came to Georgia we would have won the NC in 2002. Well, go ahead and let me have it but I am giving GT some props and I am looking forward to the game this year. Good Luck.

I, for one, think Tech has a legit shot against VT. GT’s defense has been excellent for some time now, I don’t really understand your smoke and mirrors reference. And the only time VT has played a halfway decent team(UNC), they weren’t able to move the ball. Being able to move it against Duke and Northeastern doesn’t really count. It will be a close low scoring game in Blacksburg, with one or two big plays making the difference

This game proved nothing. Tech has played 4 games, if you rank their opponents Virginia would be 3rd out of 4. Remember just last week when Western Michigan went to Virginia and won? The reason the AJC wrote that about how good the Dawgs D is, is because UAB is better than Virginia. UAB is better than Troy and Samford. UAB would take Notre Dame to the wire, because they are faster than Notre Dame. They did take Oklahoma at Oklahoma. Face it Dorks, you can make fun of UGA’s schedule all you want, put all the teams head to head that UGA and Tech have played, and UGA’s opponents would sweep. Good game against Virginia, we now know yall can compete with the MAC

First of all, let’s quit comparing ourselves to UGA. Our talent level and depth doesn’t compare to a football factory. And lets see how we get through VT, Clemson and Miami before we start pounding our collective chests. I hate the dawgs as much as anyone, but they are way down the schedule, and we’ve got a lot to prove before then. Kudos to Nix, he seems to be opening up the offense until we get a lead and Gailey shuts him down.

Tech has a good solid ball team. I don’t think we do anything really great but we don’t have real weak spots either. I do think we’ve got to get better running the ball. I know we had 320 yards rushing last week but our overall running game just isn’t there. If Va. Tech or any one else thinks they can stop us with 6 and sometimes 7 in the box it will make for a very tough day throwing the ball. The other thing offensively is we have to get CJ the ball when he has only one man on him or the defense is in loose zone coverage. I’ve seen Tech play every game this year and there are multiple games every game when we get that coverage and Ball for whatever reason doesn’t even look to get him the ball. Our kick coverage looked better last night and will need to continue in that direction so we don’t have to constantly play the field position contest week in and week out. I thought the team looked really good for the first 35 minutes last night and the offense looked unfocused and sloppy the last 20-25 minutes. GO TECH!!

gagolfdawg - I agree w/ you re: CJ and Tech’s overall strength as a team this year. I think they’re extremely dangerous & (as a UGA fan) I’m just thankful that Ball is still at QB. One nit-picky thing, though — “if CJ came to Georgia, we would have won the NC in 2002…” I believe CJ would have been about a junior in high school in 2002; but certainly we could have used a receiver of that caliber for the past several years.

Anyway, congrats, Tech on a good win. Just please keep Reggie healthy & starting at QB for the UGA game so we can win again. See you in November.

Sometimes it appears that for whatever reason, Mr. Ball purposely does not throw the ball to CJ. I hope this is not true, but it fits the profile his immature, on-field actions have shown for his 3 years at GT. His actions have shown him to be selfish, insecure, and self destructive. Sure hope the light comes on for this young man before this year is over because what awaits him is the REAL WORLD. Mr. Ball, I suggest that you use the rest of the time you have left around CJ, to learn how to succeed, because it’s obvious by the way he conducts himself, that he was taught very well.

First, regarding the stadium seating…. The idiots at Tech blocked off the prime seats in order to charge a premium for them as season tickets. The real football fans cannot afford the outrageous prices and so the wealthy alumni buy them and then do not go to the games (especially the unbalanced games).

Second, we all have to remember how very dumb the ugag posters here really are. Take their words with a grain of salt, or better yet, just skip their post all together.

Third, I think that GA Tech does have a real chance against VA Tech. The only thing that bothers me is how difficult Blacksburg is to play in - it is always tough on the visiting team. However, I do think that having a senior QB will help to over come at least some of that. Reggie has to be on his game as does Calvin. I have confidence in the defense. We have to be able to run against them and this is my biggest concern on offense.

Hey Coach imposter get back on the UGA blogs. We can wait for the test on the field. We are focused on VT now. After UGA plays a real team let us know how things are going.

Jim, I’m not so sure those are facts.

I think the reason for those empty pockets of seats was the fact that folks have to purchase GT tickets in bundles. If you only want to go to one game, you may not be as motivated to head into downtown Atlanta on a Thursday night. You get the national tv audience, but does anyone really tailgate those games?

FACT: JIM GARREN is a crack addict who gets all his facts from the Michael Moore School of statistics. Make it up, but say it like it’s true. You must have been fired by a GT graduate to have some much animosity and anger built up. Why do you bring this stupid nonsense into a football blog?

Get a life loser, and don’t forget, hold the mayo.

Jim Garren -

Your so-called “facts” are a great representation of exactly why ugag folks are stupid.

Why? Well, let’s take them one at a time….

  1. Admissions. It is true that UGA has many more in-state applicants. And, because of this, I can see in your warped world why you would think that this makes it “harder” to get into (because there are more students rejected). However, if you simply look at what QUALIFIES a student for entrance, GA Tech wins hands-down. GA Tech has a higher SAT average for incoming freshman than UGA, has more merit scholars, and others. So, it is truer to say that UGA rejects more applicants compared to “it is harder to get into.”

  2. Average salary. Again, you need to compare apples to apples. If you only look at undergraduate starting salaries, GA Tech wins hands-down. But, because UGA has a Vet school, a Law school, and other graduate programs that do offer higher starting salaries, than UGA may be higher. But, that is not comparing apples to apples, my dear sir. And, before I believe even comparing apples to oranges, I want to see the facts/numbers.

  3. Well, do I really need to say it? Probably….. you just have no proof of this. It is again a ranting of a stupid ugag poster!

Finally, no one that I know of has ever said that Tech is smarter (maybe Tech people are smarter). What folks in the know say is that Tech is a more difficult school compared to UGA and that one gets a better education for the money (as mentioned in last years Newsweek).

As proof, I believe it is still true today, but when I graduated, a recruiter from a Fortune 100 company said that when they compare a UGA graduate to a Tech graduate on paper, they add one full point to the Tech gpa. Doesn’t that tell you any thing?

Well if old Calvin played for me he would be a slam dunk for the Hiesman. That boy would touch the football at least 15 times per game. Tunnel screens, reverses, quick hitters over the middle and at least 4 long balls each game. Additionally, he would run back kick-offs and return punts And anytime my team had a forth and two or less on the opponents 40-yard line or closer, Calvin would be my tailback and use that 45” vertical jump and just let the body soar over the line. I would also play him at the DB and QB spots in certain situations. Yea, that boy wouldn’t need a sideline bicycle to keep him warm if he played for me

OLD UNIFORMS !! Let’s go back to the white jerseys of the Dodd era. We chose to wear them for all games, even at home. Duke traveled to Atlanta one year (about 1953) with only white rather than their blue jerseys. Bobby Dodd was so superstitious about his success with white jersey games that he made Duke wear Tech’s Navy blues with gold numeral jerseys - - no names on the jerseys then. A lot of Duke players could hardly raise their arms the jerseys were stretched so tight! The white jerseys were no help against Frank Leahy in South Bend a few weeks later, but made it 5 in a row against Wally Butt’s red jerseys who were still celebrating ND’s beating TECH.
