Tough luck for Oklahoma

Terence Moore

Thank goodness, Big 12 commissioner Kevin Weiberg has more sports sense than University of Oklahoma president David Boren. I mean, did the officiating crew and the instant replay officials botch a couple of obvious plays last Saturday to help Oklahoma’s football team lose to Oregon?

Definitely.

So should Weiberg do what Boren wants, and that is have the Big 12 powers that be seek to twist the arms of those at NCAA headquarters to have Saturday’s results eliminated from the record books?

Puhleeze.

If Boren gets his way, then more than a few other things should happen. For instance: The NFL should acknowledge that the “Immaculate Reception” was an illegal play and give the Oakland Raiders a belated victory over Franco Harris’ Pittsburgh Steelers.

Georgia Tech should be declared undisputed national champions for 1990 since Colorado was given five downs that season to survive Missouri down the stretch. Courtesy of umpire Don Denkinger’s botched play, the St. Louis Cardinals should replace the Kansas City Royals as winners of the 1985 Worlds Series.

Weiberg said that he won’t do what Boren wants, by the way. Weiberg knows that when bad calls occur to cost a particular team a game, that team should do what teams always have done in these situations.

Kick. Scream. Fume.

Then move on.

Don’t forget Jasper Sanks. Although I don’t see Oregon fans gloating in their tainted win the way GT fans did. GT just takes what it can get.

I’m really disappointed at the president of UO. Was it a botched call - Definitely!!! As bad as it gets. However, you whine for a day and move on. .

However i will take it the college President has nothing better to do. Maybe he should pay attention to all the football athletes and make sure they actually show up at the car dealership instead of staying at home and collecting their paycheck. Maybe try and make sure that the athletes actually go to class. How about checking into the Engineering department, Health Science or the Education department and see what concerns they might have. University of Oklahoma is an academic institution not a football institution

I guess that’s why it’s Oklahoma. UO alumnis should be disappointed at the former Governor and Senator.

poor tech. colorado got five downs and uga would not give reggie ball five downs. boo hoo!!

when bad calls occur to cost a particular team a game, that team should do what teams always have done in these situations. Kick. Scream. Fume. or maybe the team should act like men and realize that they should not have the other team so close that the refs even matter. refs don’t lose games. poor game plans by coaches and poor execution by the players lose games.

I can’t stand OU, but I was genuinely impressed with how Stoops handled the Bomar situation. But the furor over the UO game is nonsense. You got screwed, you got a public apology (which is more than most teams ever get), TS.

The request to vacate the results was the lamest demand ever made in college football history.

KennyD is right. Want to make sure the refs don’t blow the game for you-blow the other team away. Biggest screw job is still-Auburn going 13-0 and not playing USC for the championship. OU played 2-3 teams that mattered vs an SEC schedule which is always in the top 10 in toughness. When the NCAA stops announcing their “dream ” match up, then they will not be acting like the world cup committee and their wanting a Germany/Brazil Match up-and magically, it appears.

TM,

Normally I don’t agree with anything you say, but on this one you are right. If you WATCHED the game there were botched calls everywhere. Oklahoma got a coulple calls go there way early in the second half. Let’s not forget that if Oklahoma would have quit whinning for a minute maybe they could have blocked the interior lineman at the end of the game on a 40+ yard field goal attempt. Or maybe they shouldn’t have let up 500+ YARDS!!! What happened to that vaunted OU D-fense. For a bunch of idiot fans and crybaby staff it serves them well. Do they forget getting blown out 35-7 to Kansas St. in the Big 12 championship game and still getting the oppurtunity to play for the National Championship the next game. Meanwhile USC, who should have been playing(ranked #1 in both polls) decided to suck it up and destroy Iowa in the Orange Bowl. OU had had their brakes also!!

Ming…What kind of chinese fish are you….Jasper Sanks ? Are’nt you forgetting the phantom pass interference call on an un-catchable ball that gave you UGAGER’S the win over TECH 2 years earlier !

I say if you can’t hold a thirteen point lead for a minute and a half then you deserve to lose.

The big difference between the other situations discussed and the Oklahoma-Oregon situation is the presence of instant replay. As an Oklahoma fan, I find it ridiculous that the system completely failed. Anyone watching the game or seeing the highlights could tell both calls were horrible. The Pac 10 does need to change it’s policy on having it’s own refs do out of conference home games. While I don’t agree with David Boren’s call for the game to be vacated, I can appreciate his passion for his school. I hate the result of the game but maybe it will be a starting point for revamping the replay system and making it better. Hopefully we won’t see these kinds of ridiculous errors again in college football.

It’s hard for me to turn my head and not agree with UO…Just think of how dawg fans would react this weekend if they lose to Colorado because of officiating and those officials were from the Big 12…Due to sponsorship deals and so on these games are potentially worth millions…Those blatant screw-ups should nullify the game due to the fact that even the Pac 10 see’s how bad they were. When was the last time you heard of an entire officiating crew being banned for a game? At least the LSU-Auburn refs made the right calls.

What’s all this crying over a purported bad call? Even at super-slow motion, i couldn’t tell if the ball had traveled 10 yards on the onside kick. The camera angle made it impossible. Just kick the filed goal, OU, and you win the game. What a bunch of whiners.

‘Biggest screw job is still-Auburn going 13-0 and not playing USC for the championship’

….as I recall AU’s nonconf schedule included Citadel, and two ‘powerhouse’ La. schools. Also, wasn’t that the yr that the AU kicker got a free PAT ‘do-over’ against LSU after missing the 1st attempt? The only time in history that sorry penality has been used (falling on your own teammate)…so quit your eternal whining, schedule some more I AA teams to fill your 90K home stands for your 8 home game schedule, and clean up your sociology’s ethics.

C. Fletch … if you couldn’t tell that the ball had not traveled 10 yards then you need to get new glasses. It was obvious, as was the ball being tipped before the pass interference call. I have no idea how the official decided not to overturn the calls. That said, it’s time to move on. Any hopes of a national title for OU—as farfetched as they were—were lost at Oregon. But a Big 12 title and BCS bowl is still within reach.

Too bad that Oklahoma does not have organized crime. Perhaps someone could make a call and have the ref’s knee caps busted. Or maybe the powers that be can go stand outside the empty stadium and raise their fists and yell. I think it has more to do with the fact that Oklahoma has falling from the ranks of the elite and losing on bad calls is easier to digest than dealing with the reality of a program on the decline.

Tech didn’t gloat over the ‘99 phantom-fumble game? Please. I was there, kemosabe, and to look at the Techies you would’ve thought their team had just won the Nobel Prize for curing cancer. Even more galling was the way the Techies acted (and the way George O’Leary himself) acted like O’Leary was some visionary genius for kicking the OT field goal on third down after having had the benefit of watching Donnan’s “mistake.”

Then again, those who say that these things work themselves out in the end do have a bit of a point. O’Leary got canned from the Notre Dame job after five whole days, while Tech ended up with Chan Gailey. Karma’s a b!tch, ain’t it, Techies?

The comments by UGAALUM are a total putdown for all UGA alums. The grammer and spelling hopefully, do not reflect the academics of that school. That email had to be written by a kid in kindergarden!

Why can’t we just play the calls and get on with the game. In this summer’s World Cup there was play after play that that that the officials blew that effected the outcome of the world’s biggest sporting event. But what was the response of the soccer authorities, “play on.” So what if Jasper Sanks did not fumble. Our defense gave up 51 points that day. And you what me to believe that the officials cost us the game. I detest the GT crybabies as much as anyone, but sometimes you have to be a man and face the facts.

Unlike the Oregon win over Oklahoma— the officials’ mistake in the Akron- N. C. State game definitely cost the Wolfpack the game.

The difference? Oklahoma had an opportunity to stop Oregon after the Ducks’ on-side kick recovery.

In the other game, Akron scored on the last play of the game as time expired. The photo showed clearly the ball carrier (and ball) did NOT make it to the goal line. ACC ref supervisor Tommie Hunt said the refs didn’t need to look at the replay.

They blew it as did Hunt and the ACC. This is the second game in recent seasons, the refs cost the Pack a game. (Ref: @ UNC.)
