Reality kicks in for mistaken Falcons

Jeff Schultz

Flowery Branch — Before clearing the stage Wednesday for the Morten Andersen/George Burns comedy hour (“I had blood taken this morning. Dust came out.”), a very subtle thing happened.

The Falcons admitted a mistake. Sort of.

Nobody ever puts “We goofed” in words. (It’s against the NFL bylaws.) They just take away somebody’s job after two games and give it to a 46-year-old who hasn’t kicked in 20 months and has been practicing at a park until the youth team shows up (because, well, the kids had the field reserved).

This is nothing against Andersen, who may very well have enough strength remaining in his left leg and certainly has the strength in his cranium to help get the Falcons to a Super Bowl. But could this team possibly have botched such an important decision any more?

The Falcons dumped a kicker, Todd Peterson, who made 23 of 25 field goals because they say he kicked the ball too low. So they gave the job to Michael Koenen, who kicked them high. And wide.

For some reason, Peterson was viewed as a plague in Flowery Branch, though nobody outside the building can figure out why. He had a field goal blocked in a late-season overtime loss to Tampa Bay, and suddenly it was as if that was the only reason the team missed the playoffs. Forget the injuries, the previous personnel blunders, the coaching lapses. And never mind about those other seven losses.

No, said the Falcons: We can make this work! We have this great kid! We have a kicking guru! We’re going to save money and get younger!

Forget that kicking isn’t about youth. You want speed and vitality at outside linebacker. A kicker can look like a schlep and do his job. Drug test them for anything but Cool Whip. Kicking is about mental toughness. It’s about coming through in a close game with a tough crowd (road or home). It’s what makes guys like Adam Vinatieri such a rarity. Koenen might have a Hall of Fame leg, but he has oatmeal for a psyche. One 30-yard miss last week and he crumbled. Then he missed three more.

The Falcons never verbalized that they goofed. They maintain that he won the job and deserved it. But he had never been a full-time kicker at the major-college or NFL level. And if the Falcons exuded so much confidence over him, why did they work out Andersen in June and tell him he was Plan B?

“We hatched this in June or July,” general manager Rich McKay said.

Confidence in Koenen? The Falcons had been supplying Andersen with new footballs since the summer to practice with.

Andersen had been hounding his old pal, Jim Mora. He phoned him Sunday night after Koenen’s Oh-fer. (Nothing personal, kid.) The Falcons brought him in Tuesday. Andersen made seven of eight kicks, missing only a 55-yarder off the upright. The Falcons signed him. Presumably, they gave him the kicking guru’s parking space.

“I’ve got my endurance, I’ve got my Geritol. Good to go,” Andersen said.

It was ha-has all around. Patrick Kerney pulled Andersen’s poster off of the wall in “Legends Hall” in the team facility and stuck it in Andersen’s cubicle. A sign mocked: “Morten Andersen, kicker, 1966-2000, 2006.”

A trainer posted a medical newsletter highlighting the dangers of spinal osteoporosis.

Andersen led the jokes. He’s comfortable with all of this. He was just thrilled in June when he discovered he wasn’t the oldest kicker the Falcons were trying out. Also there: Eddie Murray, who was two months from turning 50.

He is all about clutch. In 1995, Andersen made a winning kick in overtime against Carolina in his first game as a Falcon. He had another OT winner two weeks later in New Orleans. Of course, he made the biggest kick in franchise history, the OT winner in Minnesota in the NFC title game.

Now he’s back with the Falcons, and his first game is against a former team, the Saints, in the Superdome on Monday Night Football. Could there be a better script?

“I’ll let you know Tuesday morning,” he said.

Just a guess: He won’t look like a mistake.

Personally, I think this is a great move. I never really had much confidence in the kicking coach from Dallas. Morten is still a decent kicker and what he brings in experience to help along Koenen is worth it’s weight in gold. Koenen has potential. He just needs someone to help him overcome the mental side of the game and develop his abilities more.

Even if he doesn’t make a kick, listening to the press conference was worth the change.

I’ll bet Bill Parcells is happy with T.O. after seeing this kicker stuff going down here in ATL … If you asked him, he’d probably tell you kickers are supposed to be fired…not hired.

Maybe Julio Franco and Morten Anderson should start a club or something.

Two years out of the game ? Hmmm. I won’t forget the chip shot at Jax that cost the Saints. Maybe everybody remembered that too and that was the reason he sat for two years.

all i have to say is what about Martin Gramatica, he’s a lil younger

By RA

Okay, I’ll say this. Yes, the Falcons have made some mistakes over the past couple of years in terms of personelle, but over the last eight months or so, they’ve really tried to plug those holes and they did it with guys that may be a little long in the tooth, but they’re quality guys. When Abraham and Hartwell went down, it was veterans like Lawyer Malloy who stepped up and said, “This is not an excuse. We will win anyway.” And they conveyed that mindset to the younger players. You know, Morten Andersen is back in a Falcon uniform because and for the simple fact that Jim Mora believes that he’s got some life left in that left leg of his. Maybe he does, but the true value of a Morten Andersen is that he can get into Koenen’s head and make him understand that a kicker has to have a very short memory and that just because you miss a 30 yard field goal in the first quarter doesn’t mean that you can’t nail a 50 yarder in the fourth quarter to win the game. Those are things that Koenen can pick up just watching how Andersen goes about his job. And just because Koenen isn’t a triple threat now doesn’t mean that he won’t be with the right direction and molding, and I think Andersen can help give him that…

Gee, Jeff. They decide to go with a strong-legged but unproven guy after he goes 8-for-8 in preseason but they keep Plan B in abeyance, then when the young guy fails they go to Plan B before any permanent damage is done.

That doesn’t sound like bad planning; that sounds like good planning. Not sure how you criticize either decision. You did see Koenen pounding 55 yarders straight down the middle in preseason, right?

Jeff, how many teams begged Peterson to kick for them?
I think the ‘experiment’ with Koenen was worth the risk. He gave every indication in pre-season that he was up to the task. Yes, it could have, would have cost us if the game had been close with TB but it worked out and they didn’t wait long to make the change. Morton has been sitting in the wings just in case this scenario happened. Now we’re on to Plan B and if Mort falters, we’ll move on to plan C. Given McKay’s and Mora’s roster building moves this year, possibly the best in the NFL, let’s not second guess this one.
And Jeff, when it comes to clever, you are one of the lamest ‘comedic sports writers’ around. Your take is often somewhat off center, like your head over your shoulders on that goofy photo. At least you’re better than T. Moore but that’s not saying a whole lot now is it! But I do agree with you, “Just a guess: He won’t look like a mistake”.
By the way, who got cut off the roster to make room for M. A?

It’s great to see Mort back with the team. It’s not like he’s going out there to play NT. He’s a kicker. He can play a little longer. I’m glad the team did not resign Peterson. Anyone who suggests Gramatica, Edinger, Condiff, etc. Well, no other team signed those guys either. I for one am glad to see Mr. Cool under pressure Mort back. He even clanged the uprights on a 55-yarder at Flowery Branch. I can’t wait to cheer for him on Oct. 1st @ the Dome.

Bringing in Andersen, but the fact we aren’t getting rid of Koenen is better. If he makes the long ones, then his confidence should return for the shorter ones.

Regarding the article on bringing in veterans - just don’t be like the redskins (being a falcon fan in DC) who have made a living by signing veteran pro-bowlers only to have them not live up to expectations. I read recently that they have signed over 30 all-pros in recent years, of which none has made it back while on the redskins.

Well he’s needed, in pre-season they really didn’t pressure Koenen, LOL, and I just pick up from him Heyyyy I’m the man, and forget who else wants the job, I do this, I do that, which is good but why I, Myself etc.

I’m glad he has help now, if he had missed that many in pre-season there would be no need to resign Anderson, maybe Mora should have signed the other young player from camp when he should have.

Hey Jeff, we all make mistakes. And for god’s sake forget about Peterson. He missed a chip shot field goal that would have won a game last season. Not only would we have won a game but that nasty a$$ stigma of never having had consecutive winning seasons. Atlanta moved on. They tried to work with the kid but they also knew it was just a shot. It didn’t work. So they got the best hired gun on the market. They also got a player that if you’re a Falcon fan is held in the highest regard. They also got a mentor for the kid. Now pack your bags and go way down yonder and write us a story late Monday night on how we stomped the hearts out of the Saints.

Hey Yall:

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Turn out the lights the party is over. The party is over for the NFL teams with the emergence of the new Falcons. You can see it on the field: the intensity and emotion that the players and coaches are playing with. This thing that is going on with the Falcons is real and I am loving it. It is fun to watch. The team is playing like a team. they are speaking for each other and backing each other up on the field. They are showing passionate care for winning and each other. This is a team from top to bottom yall. They aint BS’n. We got something real good going on in Atlanta with our football team. We are becoming the envy of the league. For one, we get to see Michael Vick and the Falcons every week. What other city gets that. For two, we get to be close to and personal with the team and players in our community. Again, thank you Arthur Blank, your team, and your staff. You are truly using your team to expose the love you have for football and the city of Atlanta. Again, SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Don’t tell nobody. Let’s try to keep this a secret Yall!!!!!

Sometimes your column reads exactly the way you look! Like the small kid in school who got picked on and dumped in the oversized trashcans in the lunchroom, full of stale chocolate milk and square pizzas! You graduate and now your gonna expose those bullies every chance you get because your older and their fat and bald! Why is it soooo important for you to have Mora or MCKay get up and tell you that they made a mistake? Isn’t it pretty much obvious to you when they bench Koenen and hire Anderson? I mean WTF is your problem? You have been whining about Mora and what he does or does not tell you about his team and players for the past few years! Maybe you should go sit in the corner of the class room and hold your breath until you turn blue in the face. It ceratinly should bring back old memories!

You are correct, sir! The only reason they did not bring back Peterson is that it would be just too obvious an admission of guilt and stupidity. This way they can still pretend there was something wrong with Todd’s kicking. There wasn’t. There isn’t. Now, when Andersen comes up short on a 34-yarder, will the Falcons have the humility to bring Peterson back then?

You see, Jeff Putz has perfect 20-20 hindsight with his nerdy glasses he eschewed for his photo there.

But Jeff Putz never told us, should Koenen go 2-8, what forward-looking plans he had in mind since he’s an expert sports writer and he should know.

Jeff Putz also just knew we should get Grady, as well. He just never informed the Falcon Nation, that’s all.

It’s no wonder Mora would never tell Jeff Putz what alternatives he has. Why? So Jeff Putz can second-guess him after the fact. Or worse, go Terence on him.

As I famously replied to another Putz once - “When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, sir?

If Todd was kicking low….work with him….don’t toss him aside like a rag doll….he’s a human being and one heck of a good kicker!!! Jeff, I usually agree with you bro, unlike your sidekick TM, but you are dead wrong to be critical over this situation. I think bringing back the great dane is a wonderful addition. Did you hear mort call himself a player/coach? Michael is a very talented kicker who I love having be a part of our team. He now has one of the best kickres ever to learn from. He can learn the art of a short memory as well as how to better prepare. And as for plan B, rememebr last year when there was no plan B. I for one am glad we had one in place. I don’t know what happened with Peterson, but let it go bro. Hes gone and hes not coming back and we may never know why. I think this is the most talented Falcons team we have had in many many years and I for one am glad to have Michael and Mort both kicking.

Did you ever consider the possibility that the Falcons just didn’t like Peterson’s attitude or mindset? Whatever the reason, it is not your job to second guess the decision making of the coaches. Think if you treat them like that they will tell you anything of value to write? IMHO, they are showing their moxie and smarts by having investigated Mort as an insurance policy while giving the kid a chance. So just report the facts and let the public make up their own minds about it.

Signing Mort is a great move. The guy has plenty of leg left and will help the kid. This bird team wants to win now and they are showing their committment to the fans, the team and each other by their actions.

Win or lose, what an exciting time to be a Falcons fan. Thanks to Blank and McKay, Mora and the players for building a team that has a chance. That’s all we can ask for. The rest will take care of itself.

By mo

T Pete is asking for too much money, that’s why he’s sitting on his couch. Also, he must have angered someone in the front office.

Also, Mort is a better long-term strategic move for the Falcons. See, Mort is actually two resources in one.

  1. He’s a great place kicker. Mort is still A-U-T-omatic 35 yards and in. You can’t rattle him. He’s been there and he’s done that. You can’t freeze him or get in his head. As a matter of fact, he will actually get in the opponent’s heads by his crazy antics and swagger.

  2. He’s a great coach and mentor. This is the same move that the Falcons have been doing for a while:

A. When Vick came into the league, they went out and got Steve Young to be his mentor.

B. When they wanted DeAngelo Hall to turn up the volume on his play, they went out and got Deion Sanders to be his mentor.

Now, it’s simply Koenen’s turn. But instead of having him on the sidelines, Koenen will get to see the soon-to-be Hall-of-Famer in action… how he warms up, his routine, the way he tunes everything out. If I was a place kicker, I would love to kick behind Morten Andersen.

So yeah, we could’ve gotten a nice, young kicker for more money. But instead, he got a legend that after this season will probably stay on the sidelines and coach.

i dont understand why the falcons didnt like peterson either. the guy made 23-25 field goals and missed one and they fire him??? last time i checked PLENTY OF PEOPLE on the falcons team made even stupider mistakes, like last year vs green bay bringing in matt schaub at the one yard line on third and 15+ yards and dropping him back to pass! of course he fumbled td or safety for GREENBAY! did they fire the offensive coordinator? HELL NO but he SINGLE HANDEDLY LOST US THAT GAME the idiot! peterson played all year and missed only two field goals from inside 40, that scrub koenon missed 6 already, 4 from inside 40 in a DAY! and he’s not getting fired??? i just dont understand these days. perhaps if koenon missed 4 field goals and we lost then he would get fired or maybe because he can punt too… makes sense… i wonder if he is getting 2 paychecks?

Jeff, I’m glad you’re not the Falcon coach or GM. Koenen was perfect in preseason with at least two 50+ kicks. You guys seems desperate to dig up something (Vick running option) negative about the Falcons in what may turn out to be one of their best teams ever. The Falcons may be right before this thing is over with Koenen. He’s very talented with a strong leg. Just think someone in Green Bay took a chance on a guy name Farve when the media in Atlanta had nothing positive to say about him. That’s why we have coaches and GM’s and some __up sports writers. Keep up the sorry job!!

I am glad they got Mort Andersen, he’s a blast from the past, and when you don’t have to get really physical, Its just his leg to work out and his mind, Mort is like 98 percent from 40 yards up. We need that sure shot. Rodney theres a reason Martin Gramatica is not working, He sucks, his percentage was much less, he is younger but he miss’s a lot more then Mort. Overall I’m glad we got him. :)

Aw, come on guys—stop riding the backs of the Falcons coaching staff! The Falcons have made so many brilliant personnel moves this off-season. No one’s perfect! With the salary-cap looming overhead, they made a decision about the kicking game that they felt they could financially live with. Unfortunately, with Koenen, those dividends will more-than-likely come later rather than sooner.

But even with this, they discover the error then bring in Andersen, a Falcons legend, who not only adds experience and accuracy to the kicking game, but championship-caliber depth to the character of the team. With so many wiley veterans with playoff, championship, and Super Bowl experience, you can bet that when the Falcons really get down the stretch, the team will perservere and come out victorious! And you’ll be able to give credit to none other than our illustrious GM and the Falcons’ Coaching Staff.

as for Mick Luckhurst, we should call him the worst kicker for the Falcons for one reason- the game vs Detroit at the end of the 88 season where he made a couple kicks that helped the Falcons win the game. trouble is, the two teams were “competing” for a high draft pick. Detroit got Barry Sanders with the #3 pick, and we got Deion with the #5 pick. And Derrick Thomas went #4. Looks like we lost out on that deal…

I usually like Jeff’s stuff, but this is the all time stupidest article I’ve ever read in the ajc. Clearly Jeff Schultz and the ajc in general don’t like Mora and want to take every opportunity to criticize him.

Here’s the deal: Michael Koenen tried and failed as the PK. He’s a very good punter and kickoff guy. And, with the right mentoring and practice, he might become a great place kicker.

You need to cut Koenen (and Mora) a little slack — this is America. People who try and fail are judged by what they do NEXT. Do they quit and whine? Do they point at other’s shortcomings? Do they blame someone else? Or do they pick themselves up and get back in the game?

Someone tell me how it is a goof that we are 2-0 . Koenen won the job in pre-season and blew up in the first 2 games. We are still 2-0 and did not get hurt. Now management has Id’d that the need is there to make a kicker move ( by the way, we are still 2-0 ). Sounds like a great management move to give it a shot and a better move to ID that it needs fixed early. That’s why jeff is writing columns that show he has no clue about the game and not making player personel decisions.

Todd Peterson is still at home. See, what you are missing here is that no NFL team wanted him at all. None of them. And he was 23-25 last year. There is obviously some reason NO team in the NFL wanted him.
