Countdown: Spurrier, Favre need do-overs
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
10: Steve Spurrier and Brett Favre were both shut out this past weekend. Welcome to the year’s first reality check.
9: When Georgia blanked South Carolina, 18-0, it was the first time a Spurrier team was shut out since 1987 when he was at Duke, which doesn’t really count. In the bigger picture, it illustrated the recruiting problems he is going to have in Columbia, much like he had at Duke, which doesn’t really count.
8: Spurrier can coach. But he’s not going to win any recruiting border wars with Georgia, and he’ll only get players out of Florida who aren’t wanted by Miami, Florida or Florida State. He should do OK against Central Florida and Southern. That means few stars and little depth. What Spurrier did last season was great, but 7-5 might be as good as it ever gets there. And at this stage of his life, I’m guessing he doesn’t have the patience for many six- or seven-win seasons.
7: Favre thought about retirement. He should’ve done more than think about it. He had two interceptions and no touchdowns in the opener against Chicago, a division rival that has held him to no touchdowns and EIGHT interceptions in the last three meetings. Brett Favre, meet Randy Wright.
6: On a good team, Favre might still be decent (but not great). But in Green Bay, he’s done in part because the Packers are done. They might be the only NFL franchise with a heart instead of a head. Why couldn’t they just say, “Goodbye”?
5: The 49ers told Joe Montana they were going to go with Steve Young. Is there some reason Green Bay couldn’t do the same thing with Favre? They need to move on and start building around Aaron Rodgers — or at least see if the kid can play.
4: Anna Kournikova, meet Maria Sharapova. (Wait. You mean you can be hot but not a fraud?)
3: From the Dept. of Bad Timing: John Smoltz is 0-3 with an 11.08 ERA and a groin pull since airing frustrations about his option for next year not yet being exercised. (That said, he still has a point.)
2: There apparently are some people who are upset that Tiger Woods appeared to be cheering for Roger Federer over Andy Roddick in the U.S. Open. Excuse me, but is Federer a Swiss arms dealer or something? Get a life, folks.
1: Guess Mark Richt didn’t think it was important to hide the identity of his backup quarterback this week (Joe Cox).

Jeff,
I was hoping that we could have hung 50 points on SC. Looking back though I kinda like the SHUTOUT of a Spurrier coached team better. He is just there taking money like he did in Washington. A lot of other people were worried that Richt was going to be out coached in the game. I guess Spurrier needs something to coach before that ever happens. You are correct on the recruiting. After he dumped a lot of those kids that Holtz had recruited to SC the high school coaches in SC probably aren’t going to want to see him around. That said and the game behind us, I hope he wins out.

At least we won’t see Superior coaching the insects in the future. Chan the Man does have the patience for 6- or 7-win seasons.

Here…chicki…chicki….! Oh where oh where have those little chicks gone? Hmmm. Maybe they grew into Ostriches and have their heads buried in the sand this week. Funny how last week they were all over these blogs telling us how Spurrier “owned” us and couldn’t wait for it to happen last weekend. I told you cluckers that a Gator has a bigger bite than a yardbird EVER will !! LOL Good luck in you 7-5 seasons! Until Spurrier finally gives up like every other coach has!!

You are correct in your assessment concerning people who are upset with Tiger for supporting his friend. The individuals that feel that way probably don’t have too many friends, therefore they cannot relate.

i listened on the postgamecock radio, spurrier lost his voice and did sound like a choked chiken—so funny—he is no better at coaching mediocre players than the next recycled coach. he gave up at dc and will there. adios

I would not be so quick to write Stevie boy off, less you forget what he did at Duke, when was the last time Duke won the ACC championship? If they had not lost to Clemson and Mizz the last two games, Carolina would have had a top fifteen class in ‘06. He will pull some major upsets again the year and let’s not forget a pretty good Georgia team only won 18-0. I think UGA is capable of beating everyone in the east. The ability to run the football and the strength of the defense will make the dawgsa very tough test for anyone. Plus we may have superman warming up.

I’ve always liked Favre, and the packers but it is definitely time to pass the torch! I thought Brett would be a bigger man than he’s been and willingly pass that torch for the betterment of the franchise he says he loves. He’s said from day one he’s not going to help/tutor/mentor Aaron Rogers, it wasn’t his job! His job was to help this club win ball games. Well Brett you havn’t been doing that lately, maybe it’s time to try something else!

Hey, ease up on Brett. Let’s see what he does against a weaker opponent. I’m afraid the Bears are going to make a lot of QBs wish they had retired before the year is out. He may not be what he was, but he is still better than half the QBs in a league desperate for quality signal callers.
By Iceman
September 12, 2006 01:30 PM | Link to this
You are incorrect Carl.He is not better than half the QBs in the league:He lead the league in interceptions. Favre callers. Favre has always been irratic, but it was overshawdowed by his touchdown perfomance. There is no touchdown performance now, and his wildman tendencies are still there. This is totally unfair to Aaron Rodgers and the whole city of Green Bay. All good things must come to an end.

Anna Kournikova was ranked number one in the world in doubles, and was in the top ten in the world in singles at one point. Her big sin in the eyes of the media is that she likes boys and happens to be dropped dead gorgeous, two strikes against a “serious” woman athlete, apparently. Are the legions of women frauds that have played for years and never made it to number 1 in the world in singles? If you don’t understand tennis, Jeff, at least allow yourself the pleasure of sitting back and enjoying the view.

Iceman, you do realize that Tiger and Federer aren’t friends, right?
I mean, they had never met before that moment, and the only thing they have in common, besides dominating their individual sports, is NIKE.
That’s right, Iceman. Tiger sold his patriotic soul for the moulah. For the money. For the benjamins and for the bling.
NIKE set up their pre-match meeting. And NIKE, not Federer, put Tiger in Nike’s box.
Now, I don’t know as much about tennis as I do golf or football or any other sport that matters more, but I do know that I always root for the American if he’s playing a foreign guy.
It’s a national pride issue. And especially with Roddick making an extreme comeback from his ill-advised star turn back into a guy who can really play, I’m sorry, but Tiger selling out because of corporate ties just doesn’t cut it.
Just because Roddick wears Reebok or Adiddas, or whatever he wears, that means Tiger should root for the other guy because they wear the same clothes?
That’s screwed up. Just like in football and baseball and hockey, where the name on the front (whether it be the Bulldogs, Braves, or USA) should be more important than the name on the back, in these individual sports, we should always have our countryman’s back.
Tiger didn’t. And NIKE bought him off for his 30 pieces of silver.

Dear Anticapitalist Birdawg,
You, just like other misguided souls, are always trying too criticize the very system of economics that feeds your fat face. Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer of all time and he can do whatever he wants. We all have the same freedoms to choose what we do and who we will support doing it. I too support Roddick for his accomplishments, but to go so far as to not support one of the greatest Americans today because of his allegiance to what he stands for is not American. The ICEMAN has once again spoken.

All of you running your dicsuckas about the USC program and Spurrier, well well, FLA fans how YOU soon forget. You guys were not JACK -s** BEFORE spurrier got there! Period! WE WILL, be in the SEC CS game within 2 years. Hell, Lou had us there knocking on the door every year.
Guys do your homework before you start running your dicsuckas about recruiting. There are SO many talented kids out there today, than 10 years ago, and alot of them want to play for a legend like Spurrier.
And to the redneck from FLA name CULpeper. Dude, I don’t know where you are hanging when you come to the ATL. But, we don’t hang at Applebees nor the Golden Corral. The big A is hip, young, progressive city. It doesn’t sound like you would fit in.

On the Tiger/Federer thing…
There is one other common denominator between the two, apart from Nike — greatness. I’m sure Tiger — without question the greasted golfer of his generation, and quite possibly the greatest of all time — was motivated by more than mere money to want to meet and admire the talents of one of the few living human beings on earth who can actually relate to that type of greatness: Federer, the greatest tennis player of his generation and quite possibly the best of all time in his sport.
And as for Anna K. — Sounds like a bit of jealosy to me, Jeff. Kournikova was one of the best in the world at her trade — never THE best, but one of the top players at least. She was certainly a better tennis player than you are a writer. Plus, I’m quite certain that if anyone were demented enough to throw millions in endorsement $$ your way based more on your looks than your talent, you wouldn’t say no…

I am a huge Georgia fan and graduate. Regardless of how one feels regarding SOS, he is without question one of the 5 greatest college coaches. His ability to win at Duke and the SEC Champanionships @ Florida are some of the greatest accomplishments ever.
Kournikova, was a great athlete-period. Her problem was her mother(quiet a piece of work) and mental preparation. Had she remained with Nick Boliterri(?) and injury free, she would have won majors- convinced.
Eye candy on the tour today is Ana Ivanovic(#15), if she develops mentally/physically(stops eating), she will be a force.
Schultz, please avoid tennis commentary-you are not qualified!!!!

SOS IS A GREAT COACH….HE HAD A WORLD OF TALENT AT FLORIDA, WHICH HE WON’T HAVE AT CAROLINA. I WAS ALWAYS AMAZED AT HOW GOOD HIS LINE PLAY WAS BACK THEN, ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL. A WRITER FOR THE STATE PAPER IN COLUMBIA TODAY MADE A GOOD POINT. THE SEC IS A DIFFERENT PLACE NOW THAN IT WAS IN THE 90’S. AUBURN, LSU, GEORGIA AND TENN., EXCEPT FOR LAST YEAR ARE ALL VASTLY IMPROVED. WITH A GOOD GOOD TEAM, LIKE US (GEORGIA), HE COULD STILL LOSE 3 OR 4 GAMES. IF HE CAN’T WIN, HE’LL LEAVE. ASK THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS!

How dare you speak of the ICEMAN like that. Consider your name for a moment, “The Man”. You’ve named yourself after the focus of your true desires. The evidence of that is your brainless remark to me taking up for your boyfriend Birdawg. If the two of you can climb out from behind each other long enough to realize that the greatest Golfer ever deserves respect, then you have additional problems other than taking offense when your lover’s comments have been criticized. The ICEMAN has spoken.

UGA scores one touchdown. What a juggernaut. But for fumbles and bonehead plays you would have had a game. UGA will lose to UF, AU, and UT. That’s 3 losses and no SECE. It’s just the 2nd year of Spurrier. People over here in Columbia knew the Dawgs and Vols would be on Spurrier once he had a little adversity. You folks are whistling by the grave yard. He is about to pull a tremendous recruiting class. Take a look at the lines he is redshirting. You’ll be changing your tune soon. Show a little class bulldawgs. Don’t you know it’s not nice to disrespect your Daddy?
