It’s Stafford’s job now

Jeff Schultz

Columbia — It was an interesting week in Athens. Mark Richt became the first coach in history to announce a starting quarterback but leave the identity of his backup undisclosed, as if it posed some national security risk.

Ah, the mind games of paranoid football coaches. Imagine Steve Spurrier was up all week, worrying “Is it Barnes? Is it Cox? It’s not Stafford, is it? Naw. Can’t be Stafford. My head hurts.”

So at least one good thing happened Saturday night: The end of “Who’s behind door No. 2?” now and for some time. Barring injury or unexpected calamity, Matthew Stafford almost certainly will be the Georgia starter from this point on. (Only the families of the other quarterbacks on the depth chart will be concerned about the rest of the order.)

Richt would not concede anything after Georgia’s 18-0 win over South Carolina. There must be something in the coach’s handbook about not disclosing the obvious, as in: “I’ll comment on the sunrise only if and when I see it.”

Starter Joe Tereshinski played only one series before leaving with a seemingly significant ankle injury. But Richt held off declaring this Stafford’s team, saying of Tereshinski, “If he’s healthy right now, he’s the starter.”

OK. Whatever.

Stafford showed why this likely will be his job to lose for as long as he is in Athens. He wasn’t perfect. He wasn’t always on target. He didn’t always make the right decision. (One statistic that confirms all of the above: three interceptions.)

But he showed the talent all knew he possessed and remarkable cool for any young quarterback, let alone one making his SEC debut in one of the conference’s loudest stadiums. He audibled to a touchdown run. He showed more mobility than some have given him credit for, with scrambles of 23 and 11 yards. He threw for 171 yards, even if on only 8-for-19 passing.

And afterward, he said all the right things: “It’s been a little crazy. But, you know what, I’m just doing the best I can. I’ve got a ton of work to do. I personally didn’t play well enough for this team to win. Our defense did an amazing job. Special teams did a great job. The offensive line, the running backs — great. I didn’t get the ball where I was supposed to a couple of times. Those are mistakes I’ve got to cut out. But overall I had a great time out there.”

Ever just get a feeling about a player? You get that feeling with Stafford.

It’s a wonder he hasn’t gotten motion sickness the last few weeks. He went from hot shot recruit to tied for third on the depth chart to probably redshirt to playing in the fourth quarter against Western Kentucky to double-secret backup. (And now to double-secret starter.)

Stafford said he never felt rattled — this, in a stadium where Georgia often struggles, and against the Bulldogs’ legendary tormentor. “You can’t be [rattled],” he said. “When things go bad, or go good, you just have to let it go. It’s always about the next play.”

He’s 18 years old — and already programmed.

In the first quarter, Georgia was backed up to its own 11-yard-line. But on second-and-14, Stafford let go his first pass, a 25-yard bullet over the middle to Martrez Milner. In the second quarter, after driving to the South Carolina 9, the Dogs faced third-and-goal. Stafford stepped up to the line, looked at the safeties, then checked to an inside handoff to Danny Ware, who ran through a gap for a touchdown and a 10-0 lead.

Stafford: “It’s a play where I have a blank slate and pick a play.” He picked correctly.

He ran play-action to perfection with a 39-yarder to Mohamed Massaquoi. He scrambled 11 yards on third-and-9 from the Dogs’ 17. None of the three interceptions backfired. One wasn’t his fault — a 4-yarder that first bounced off Massaquoi’s shoulder in the end zone while the receiver seemingly was being held. Another traveled over 50 yards in the air and was thrown up for grabs, the other an underthrow.

Stafford: “I can’t make bad decisions like that.”

Richt considered redshirting Stafford but changed his mind after he showed significant improvement in practice before the opener. We’ll never know if that was the case, or if Richt really planned on this evolution all along. But things are finally as they should be.

Hmmm.

The Future is here, DawgNation.

And for any of y’all who buy into that cadswallop that Joe T will start if healthy, then y’all are more stupid than I’ve ever thought.

And if Coach Richt will really start Joe T ever again, then he will have entered into Greg Knapp-land for me, and I don’t know if he’ll ever be forgiven by the DawgNation.

It won’t be pretty next Saturday if Joe T is announced as the starting QB.

It’s amazing. Everyone on the planet know that Matthew Stafford gives us the best chance to win in this conference except the Coach.

Or maybe Coach is pulling the wool over our eyes.

But like I said much earlier in the blogs:

Everything I expected. Poise, power, and yes, growing pains.

But unlike Joe T, Matt gives us a chance to win. Joe T just gives a chance not to lose. And if any of y’all think Joe T would have done any better, y’all need to just go away. Those passes Matt completed, Joe T couldn’t ever dream of doing. Not to mention the heads up runs.

The future is NOW DawgNation, and in this case, future is spelled Matthew Stafford.

I hope CMR gives Stafford LOTS of minutes against UAB, to get him ready to roll the balance of the season. As Stafford gets more reps in practice, as the receivers get more in sync with his arm, and he gets a more complete grasp of the playbook, then the mistakes will be fewer, and he will live up to ALL of the hype!

For a moment let us not worry about who is right and wrong about the starting QB. I hope all of us Bulldawgs enjoyed the “GOOSE EGG” the D put on the board tonight. This one was for ERK RUSSELL!!! Rest in Peace.

Mel Kiper’s children are nearby. Oh hell. Richt obviously knows what he’s doing with quarterbacks (he made Chris Weinke look good). Stafford led the team to 13 points. Shutting the door on JT3 is complete nonsense. We really don’t know what he’s capable of yet. I think he has thrown 10 passes this season. If JT3 can’t return for 2 or 3 weeks, Stafford will probably start every game for a few years.

The defense was the story of the night. The invisible hand of Erk Russell. We still won’t know much about how any of these QBs handle extreme pressure until we play a complete team. That may or may not be Tennessee. That will be Florida and Auburn. Hopefully JT3 will get better soon and won’t go outta here like Quincy Carter. He’s been too loyal to get that treatment.

We saw a BULLDAWG being born tonight. Birth is always a little sloppy but it’s beautiful to watch. What’s up with Richt and the running backs? Lumpkin is the only one that consistently hits the hole with a purpose. Let him play, coach!

Anyone who watched the same game I did on ESPN and saw the birth LA DAWG & I did won’t have any problem with Matthew Stafford as our QB. The guy I saw made some mistakes but I saw so many good things, under real pressure, that this is a healty baby. given a blank slate and checking off to a TD.

Stafford looks great, but I must admit, I feel for JT3. I wish him the best, he, like Shockley before him waited his turn and this is not how you wish for a guy to perhaps lose his job. As someone there said before, we have no idea really how good JT3 is. Lest you forget, David Greene did not have a rocket of an arm—he was just a super smart QB with the heart of a champion.

Lest we also forget, we were playing South Carolina. These mistakes by Stafford would probably have led to an arse whipping had we been playing Auburn, Florida, or even Tennessee. As crazy as Columbia is, it is nowhere near as hostile as Jacksonville!

Good luck Tereshinski on a speedy recovery! We still need you!

bird, one thing I admire about you is that you stick to your guns, no matter what people say about you.

Let me say this though: The way our defense played, our O-line played, and our backs ran, I think even you, Bird, could have led the Dawgs to a win tonight.

JT’s injury was disappointing to me for 2 reasons. 1 - you hate to see any Dawg get hurt. 2 - I was really hoping JT would lead the Dawgs to a big win just to see Bird get it shoved in his face (I still think JT would have won that game handily the way our team played.)

All of which is to say I have long believed MS was the Qb of the future. And I’m excited about that future. I just think there is alot more integrity in wanting our starters (whoever they may be) to be as succesful as possible. That’s just me.

Some of you people are dumber than dirt. Look, we all like Joe T. We all think Joe T. is a damn good dog. But cut out this BS about how Tereshinski should be the starter. He does not, I repeat, does not offer us what Stafford does. Stafford offers us a chance to win big. Over the next 3 games is the perfect time to get Stafford as much experience as humanly possible before Tennessee. Hell, anyone that watched tonight’s game knows we look like a completely different team with Stafford.

I feel for Joe. I really do. But he just does not have the talent or the arm to keep defenses honest. He can’t even run as well as Stafford. Folks, there’s no comparison. This shouldn’t be a “let’s be loyal to Joe T.” moment. This should be a moment to play the best guy we have. That is Stafford. End of story. It’s not even debateable.

Not to mention now that Stafford’s redshirt is gone, there’s no way we should waste a year just to be loyal to Joe T. Wasting a year with this kind of talent would be the dumbest decision Richt ever made, and he and everyone else knows it.

First and foremost let’s dedicate this SHUTOUT to Erk!!! Second of all, we seemed to have gotten the best of both worlds: Matt Stafford came in and did great, and yet it slipped under the radar as far as ESPN goes (not sure what ESPN stands for, but Im pretty sure the S stands for Stupid). Let’s hope UT just sees 8 for 19 and 3 picks.
Lou the Leprechaun predicted USC by two TD’s, but didn’t have the guts to eat crow (or c__k is more like it…forgive me) on the post game.

Go Dawgs, let the others have the hype, we’ll just take care of business one game at a time.

Get well soon JT3, a true Dawg.

“by66AUGrad” “We’ll be watching ESPN to”

“We’ll be watching ESPN to see how all these highly rated UGA QBs measure up against Steve Spurrier’s Gamecocks on 9 Sept. Auburn gets its turn in the barrel in Columbia on 28 Sept with a Thursday night game on ESPN.”

“Playing the ‘Cocks and Coach “Superior” on the road and on ESPN will be a good test for both teams.”

THIS TEST IS OVER.

Florida beats Tennessee vols next weekend, and LSU beats Auburn next week.

But, this week for the loud mouth Auburn fans, Georgia had no worries with out Quarterbacks doing far better than Spurrier’s - as I said.

After LSU beats Auburn on the Plains next weekend, Florida too will come to the Plains and beat down Auburn as well. Then, Georgia comes to the Plains where Georgia always beats Auburn and owns Auburn as well. That’s 3 home losses this season by Coach Tommy Tuberville.

Matthew Stafford is the best Quarterback in the SEC this season. Forced into the rotation last week, because Coach Richt needed to be certain that if an injury were to happen to his starter, that his backup was not thrown into the fire then for the 1st time, this “265-lbs. fatso” has taken off now on 3 runs of 20 yards each on his only 3 carries, each for 1st downs and has far and away shown that he has the best arm in the SEC this season.

Stafford leap-frogged Spurrier on the field, and leap-frogged all competition on the team in the SEC who does have the most talent at QB of any SEC team this season yet again.

Of course 2 of 2 of the previous Coach Richt’s UGA Quarterbacks in the NFL now, were both All-SEC 1st Team Quarterbacks and both won SEC Championships for Coach Richt.

Now, this season, Matthew Stafford takes over now for the injured Joe Peter Tereshinski III while Number 4 on the Depth Chart because of injuries of a broken thumb and knee surgery in the off-season this Summer Blake Barnes played in the Defensive Secondary for Coach Richt last night turning in a Pass Break Up. Co-Number 2 on the Depth Chart Joe Cox did not get in the game, and hung his head at the end of the game for the National TV audience.

And, so there we have it.

Is you is, or is you ain’t the Starter for Coach Richt.

Both Auburn and Georgia have now 38 Wins against SEC Teams starting 2000. Auburn has one less loss at 13, until next weekend.

http://football.stassen.com/cgi-bin/records/conference.pl?start=2000&end=2005&team=Alabama&team=Arkansas&team=Auburn&team=Florida&team=Georgia&team=Kentucky&team=LouisianaState&team=Mississippi&team=MississippiState&team=SouthCarolina&team=Tennessee&team=Vanderbilt

The year Coach Richt started after Vince Dooley hired him December 20, 2000 at 2 a.m., starting the 2001 season, Coach Richt has now today 33 Wins against Teams in the SEC only ahead of tied for 2nd LSU with 32 Wins against SEC Teams starting 2001 and Auburn 32 Wins against SEC Teams starting the 2001 season. Again, Auburn has one less loss at 32-10 against just SEC Teams starting the 2001 season, than both Georgia or LSU. But, Auburn has one less Win than Georgia and it a quite significant win by 3 Touchdowns over your foe next week LSU for the 2nd Coach Richt SEC Championship.

While we speak of Auburn and Vincent J. Dooley, it is quite fascinating that not once yet has Vince been quoted about the man totally responsible (along with Herschel Walker) for 1 of Vince’s 2 National Championships listed in the Official NCAA 1-A Football Records Book - Junkyard ‘Dawg with blood dripping down his bald forehead Erk Russell.

We dedicated our Defense to The Junkyard ‘Dawg last night on each helmet with the Black “ERK,” but Vince has not been quoted yet on his passing - Ceremony today Sunday at soon to be named for him Erk Russell Field with his swamp water in Statesboro Georgia from the creek beside The Field soon to be named for him, who left Georgia among the Dump Dooley Campaign of 1977 when many wanted Erk Russell to take over for Vince as Head Coach at UGA after 17 seasons as our Defensive Coordinator and Team Motivator.

Every college football fan in America knows that Erk Russell was the backbone of Vince’s teams and that Vince never did a thing after he left to resurrect the Georgia Southern University Football Program to 3 1-AA National Championships with his Flexbone Offense led by Tracy Ham.

But, Vince was a fine Athletic Director for UGA.

Only the new Athletic Director wrestled away the SEC All-Sports Trophy from Florida in his 1st Year as our Athletics Director to be Both the Reigning SEC Football Champions and 2 of the last 4, and be the Reigning SEC All-Sports Champions as well.

Tony Taylor had a big night last night, has 2 SEC Championships already he is our Starting Linebacker for both previous years, and now this season trots out his considerable skills to whoop Steve Spurrier for the 2nd year in a row for Coach Richt to have whooped Steve Spurrier and Tony Taylor tries this season to be now the SEC Champions 3 times as our Starting Linebacker.

It is no small feat.

Nor for Coach Richt to be now 20-2 on opposing teams’ own home turf.

Coach Richt leads The SEC with his 33 Wins against just only SEC Teams now in his 6th season at the helm, and led The SEC with 32 Wins against just only SEC Teams when Coach Tommy Tuberville opened his considerable lying trap that instead he, Tommy Tuberville, had the most wins over the previous 5 years against SEC Teams, which is exactly what Tommy Tuberville stated.

It wasn’t the case.

And, isn’t the case.

And, now next weekend when LSU prevents Tommy Tuberville from winning the 1st of what promises to be 3 Home Losses this season yet again for Tuberville, it will be not only over the Time that Coach Richt has been at Georgia of this the 6th season of 33 Wins UGA, 32 LSU, 32 Auburn’s Tommy Tuberville; but over the 7 seasons as well that Tommy Tuberville will not have the most wins against just only SEC Teams with Auburn having 38-13 and UGA having 38-14 record.

Auburn will not be over the 7 years, the team with the Most Wins in the SEC next weekend, not when UGA is also 38-14 with 2 UGA SEC Championships in the 7-Year Period.

But, that isn’t what Tommy Tuberville said. He said over the previous 5 years, and over the previous 5 years both LSU and UGA have More Wins than Tommy Tuberville at 32 Wins by LSU and 32 Wins by UGA over the previous 5 year period to only 31 by Tommy Tuberville.

Tuberville is full of BS, as 31 is not More Wins than 32 of both of the teams ahead of him in Wins against just only SEC Teams the last 5 years before this one.

Starting 2000 the year before Coach Richt took over the reigns here too Tommy Tuberville even there he doesn’t have More Wins at 38 for Auburn and 38 for Georgia against just SEC Teams, although like I say UGA has one more loss at 38-14 to Auburn 38-13 with 2 SEC Championships and Tony Taylor trying to be the Starting Linebacker for Coach Richt’s fine Defenses who have 2 already trying for his 3rd SEC Championship as our Starting Linebacker these 3 seasons in question.

Bear Bryant and Steve Spurrier have had 5 Consecutive Seasons of 10 plus Wins. They and they alone.

Coach Richt with This Win, his 33rd against SEC Teams at UGA, which you questioned and I did not, has now More Wins against SEC Teams than ANY TEAM IN THE SEC, as both LSU and Auburn have only 32.

So, to set the record straight 66AUGrad, sir :

“by 66AUGrad” “We’ll be watching ESPN to”

“We’ll be watching ESPN to see how all these highly rated UGA QBs measure up against Steve Spurrier’s Gamecocks on 9 Sept. Auburn gets its turn in the barrel in Columbia on 28 Sept with a Thursday night game on ESPN.”

“Playing the ‘Cocks and Coach “Superior” on the road and on ESPN will be a good test for both teams.”

These 6 Consecutive Rivals’ Top 10 Best Quarterbacks in the Nation that Coach Richt has consecutively recruited himself to UGA since his arrival here for the 2001 season, highly rated yes indeed, beat Steve Spurrier for the 2nd year in a row and added then their 33rd Win against just only SEC Teams for Coach Richt, more Wins against SEC Teams than ANY SEC TEAM, on this day since the start of his 2001 Season.

Just in case you wanted to know.

Or, if you didn’t.

Did you really expect Steve Spurrier to beat Coach Richt 66AUGrad, when he could not last season either ?

You are so full of yourselves Auburn fans…and Tommy Tuberville.

Duff

Yes, Lou Holtz was PO’d pre-game when the other ESPN analyst stated that indeed Coach Richt would beat Steve Spurrier’s Gamecocks yet again this season.

Lou Holtz stated boldly that UGA had no offensive line, no quarterbacks and no secondary or defense.

Yet, as I have stated all along with any of Coach Richt’s QBs, we would be 8-0 to begin the season and had put my money where my mouth is on that as well. It’s a sure bet.

Let us then, Duff, do the analysis and eating of crow by Lou Holtz for him and for all those doubting Thomas’ in this UGA Beat Blog (What’s a QB Blog?), shall we Duff?

When he so frustratingly stated so boldly that UGA has no QB, my statement was that indeed all of Coach Richt’s QBs are better than LaGrange Blake Mitchell. (Their backup looked far better to me.)

On Holt’s statement about the Offensive Line for UGA, my instant retort was what I have said all along that UGA has a far better OL than does South Carolina.

On Holt’z 3rd statement of total superiority by The Gamecocks over UGA, when they have lost to Coach Richt like Tech has now 5 years in a row, that UGA has problems on Defense - Good Lord, my reply that indeed there too Lou Holtz (All 3 of his points, exactly precisely the major flaws of not UGA compared to USC but USC compared to UGA.) that the Top 7 tacklers from last season and 10 of the 11 Starters on the Defense that could NOT beat Coach Richt last season, were not there for this season.

Who didn’t have the Defense Lou Holtz ?

Who didn’t have the QBs Lou Holtz ?

Who didn’t have the Offensive Line Lou Holtz ?

Again, this is not what this is about.

Joe Peter Tereshinski III is injured, and Joe Cox but 1 play away himself from being our Starter.

And, Blake Barnes then back on offense as the backup.

Joe T was quite taken back when hit, trying to deal with what he could tell even immediately unable to quickly bounce up, was not good.

Let us remember who is the head coach of our team. Joe T is hurt. The pain but mostly the frustration was written undeniably on his face. He wanted this game so bad I bet the taste is still in his mouth. Richt went with the kid, good choice. But Richt, being Richt, tried to give some comfort to a Dawg that has always been there. I can’t play QB, I will be the best special teams player I can be. CMR was extremely gracious in throwing that loyal Dawg a bone. That is what makes him a great man, not just a great coach.

The die is cast. There is no going back. Bird you and I just disagreed on the timing of when the kid would be the starter. Well fate as it often does, took it out of ours, but mostly CMR’s hands. The kid will be the starter from now on. Cox and Barnes will transfer and we get a true freshman in Gray as a backup next year.

Gotta love that Junkyard Dawg defense. I hope they keep the Erk’s on their helments all year. As I said on another blog, they need a bust of Erk on the Dawg walk for our players to rub his head before a game. If that won’t get you fired up, call the coroner. You don’t have a pulse.

Go Dawgs and bring the rest on.

Lou Holtz is a pin head leprecaun, who is so biased in his old age that I can’t believe he has that job. Maybe they have to hire his son Skippy if they let him go.

The Bulldogs looked every bit the team recovered from senior departures and adversity of suspensions. The Gamecocks looked like a well coached team with a lack of talent in a lot of areas. Until coach Spurrier gets the horses, his races will be difficult. There is no QB controversy at UGA. Everyone who watched the game saw an unusually talented and gifted kid get off to a really good start. He will play most of the year for CMR, but he will NOT be put in a situation to damage his psyche. Hence the post game comments by CMR. Hey Bulldog Nation, isn’t this fun!

It’s good to see these idiot dawg fans put so much trust into a Freshman QB who played against A High School team the first game, and then played against a no-so-good South Carolina team in the second game, and then plays another High School team (UAB)possibly in the third game. When are you idiots going to play a REAL team? I feel you can’t measure growth by playing sub-par teams. Yes you ARE supposed to beat the hell out of Western Kentucky, South Carolina, and UAB, but what will happen when you play a REAL team? I must admit though that this kid Stafford looked good, against sub-par competition, and you coach would be an idiot if he puts Joe III back in. In my humble opinion, which wont matter here, Shockley was the best QB at your school. I’ve always said that and I’m a Tech fan. Screw loyalty, put the best QB in that gives you a chance to win. Yes, Stafford is good, but many have mentioned 3INTs will not cut it against better competition.

Stafford was outstanding and the future. Joe T. is a great guy, but can’t compare in talent to Stafford. The name of the game is to win, and our best shot is Stafford. What’s wrong with placing Joe T. in the 2nd position. We won’t have a chance against Florida and Auburn with Joe T.

By BirdDawg

September 10, 2006 09:42 AM | Link to this

If Coach puts Joe T back into the starting line-up at any time, I hope he realizes that 92,000 people in Sanford Stadium won’t be very understanding.

And as much as I wholly believe that Joe T has never had any business taking snaps as the No. 1 QB, I’d hate to hear 92,000 people booing this kid who, even though he doesn’t have a shred of Stafford’s or Cox’s talent, is a damn good Dawg.

But I guarantee that will happen. Even if it is UAB or Colorado, the Dawg Nation will boo Joe T if he is announced as the starting QB, and the kid shouldn’t have to go through that.

But that isn’t why Coach shouldn’t put him out there anymore. The reason he shouldn’t is because Joe T simply does not have the talent to win in the SEC. And that’s the only thing that matters.

No doubt the kid has a terrific arm, but his performance showed that despite his potential, he is just not ready to be the starter. Stafford played well enough for the defense to save his butt three different times. He didn’t win the game, he didn’t even manage the game, he just managed not to lose thanks to the D.

OK … No more thinking or wondering if he’s the man … Stafford is our best chance to win this year and without a doubt the QB of the future at UGA.

Yes, there will be some growing pains as he masters the offense and realizes the speed of SEC defenses. He made some bad decisions against the Cocks because he has yet to learn the speed of the game but I sincerely believe he’s a student of the game and a quick study.

I acutally thought JoeT III was faking the injury to begin with until I saw the replay of the injury. Kudos to JoeT for being a great Dawg and a real gamer but fate has made the transision that CMR was trying to figure how to accomplish without hurting anyone’s feelings.

I firmly believe, CMR should give Matthew Stafford the lion’s share of practice snaps and the majority of game snaps over the next several weeks. This is perfect timing to get MS up to speed and ready for the meat of the schedule. If MS gets the practice reps and game experience over the next few weeks he will, without doubt, give us the best chance to win the tougher games on our schedule.

Could David Greene’s records be in jepordy? What a great time to be a DAWG!!!

I cringe when I think about what all of these dawg fans would be saying if Joe T had thrown 3 ints, gone 8 for 19 and hadn’t produced ANY TDs. That’s exactly what Coach Richt is talking about when he is sayin Joe T gives us the best chance to win (he won’t beat us). I think I can say with some certainty Joe T would not have thrown 3 ints last night. Also with some certainty, if Stafford throws 3 ints against better SEC competition we WILL lose. As for those blawgers who are saying that Stafford looked “great” “superb” or “outstanding”… clearly a 7:45 kick off gives you far too much time to pre-game. Your vision and thought processes were affected in the hours of bloody marys, jack and cokes and miller lights running up to game time. That or objectivity is beyond you all.

Joe T looked pretty good in his limited time. Funny, the Dawgs ran the ball pretty well early - something some football “experts” said couldn’t be done. No, he can’t make the throws Stafford can, and no doubt, the younster from Texas is the real deal. That said, only a luntic says the Dawgs can’t win with Joe T.

September 10, 2006 10:58 AM | Link to this

Good Mornin’ Dawg Nation! Coach Richt here to help keep the “Dawg Blawg” real. I want to thank all of you for your guidance on the QB issue. Your debates here have really helped me compare/contrast the strengths and weaknesses of all four of our QBs. I’m happy to discuss with you my thoughts on the QB situation. But, I must say that we have a more pressing issue to deal with… O-LINE: Two ‘big uglies’ go down up front almost 12 hours ago, and you STILL don’t have a sitrep on them. Why does AJC over-report on QB while neglecting what we on the coaching staff see as a much more crucial situation? We’re already thin… if we don’t solidy the OL, it doesn’t matter who the QB is (or the RB, for that matter). QUARTERBACK: All of us are sorry to see JT3 go down; he’s a man among men. I thought Matthew played well at times, but we must cut down on mistakes, both mental (checks and progressions) and physical (poorly thrown balls). I thought we missed some excellent scoring opportunites that we’ll need to cash in on against more formidable opponents. Until he can do that, JT3, Joe Cox, and even Brett Barnes (the man forgotten by the media, but not by the coaching staff) will remain in the picture. Now, I must get back to the film room, but before I do, please heed this warning: “do not look past UAB.” Last week, the Blazers gave OU all they could handle — in Norman! And yesterday, they beat a solid East Carolina team.

I agree with you, BuLLdawg - the points that Lou Holtz tried to identify as UGA’s weaknesses turned out to belong to USC.

Since last Spring, I have had a good feeling about MS, only to see him perform with the poise of a seasoned veteran QB against WKU last week. I, like many other Bulldawg faithful, am now riding the MS bandwagon.

What MS offers that JoeT lacks is throwing speed, throwing distance, and the ability to scramble for positive yardage. These next 2 weeks will be telling for the development of UGA’s offense, as they adapt to MS’s style. I’m a true believer that the throwing distance MS has will keep the SEC’s best defenses on their toes.

Sure, MS had 3 INTs vs USC - but there’s no denying he maintained his composure and didn’t let his setbacks affect his overall play.

I tip my cap to the UGA defense - great job, boys! No doubt they saved our a$$ after some potentially costly turnovers.

Dawg fans, enjoy the ride this season. It’s gonna be fun!

think Staffords other 2 picks were partially his fualt. On the first AJ Bryant should have come to the ball instead of sitting there waiting for it. Receivers have to protect the ball. On the pass to Massaquoi, Massaquoi actually slowed and pushed the defender to the ball. I guess he did not think Staffords’s pass would go that far. That is one thing that UF has always trained there receivers better, how to protect the ball.

Watching Stafford last night took me right back to watching Greene’s first start. Freshman QB, making some mistakes, but undeniable talent and inarguably the future of the program.

You’re right that his stats wouldn’t have sat well if they were JoeT’s, but JT has been in the program for 5 years, Stafford has been in the program for 5 months.

Great game last night. We’re just getting started.

Stafford looked good at times, bad at times, and we all can see now why he was so highly-touted coming out of high school. He is the future of the Georgia program.

But…

If his performance last night were to be magically transposed to a game against an Auburn or Florida (or maybe even a Tennessee), we’d have been smoked, folks. He got greedy a coupla times and went for home runs when he should’ve gone for base hits. I’ll chalk that up to 1. Maturity and time will fix that 2. Practice with the starting squad and time will fix that, as well.

But what CMR is saying about JT3 is right… he gives this team the best chance to “win,” but what he should have said about JT3 is that he gives this team the best chance “not to lose.”

Stafford’s 8/19 3 INTs in a game against a team with some offense and a stout defense, and we’d be moaning and groaning about lackadasical statistics and performance.

I’m very excited about the kid, but let’s be a bit more tempered about it, and realize that one of the great qualities about our head coach is loyalty and love for his players. Tereshinski will see playing time and will contribute to whatever this team does this season, because he’s earned that right.

Our O-line did well, and our running backs were phenominal. Our defense (God bless you, Erk; we know you had your hand in that shutout, from above!) played well, but still has a ways to go. Having a no-mistakes guy like JT3 at QB will matter i na season like this; but hey, if Stafford can quickly grasp what CMR is trying to teach him, that turnovers can kill us, and you don’t always have to go for the bomb, just because it appears it might be there, then we’ll be fine.

SEC Fred, who are you a fan of? The Dawgs D is better than you think. What makes you an authority on anything? How many freshman QB’s go in to that kind of environment and show the poise that he did all night. Not many. By the time the Dawgs play the likes of Auburn and Florida Stafford will be seasoned and ready. The kid is special. It’s scary to think how good the Dawgs and Stafford will be in a year or two. Just admit your jealous. Go Dawgs!

About Staffords three interceptions. The first one was his fault, the second one should have been pass interference and was deflected, the third one Mo Mass gave up on the route and stopped running. All this will be overcome when the recievers begin to understand the arm strength of Matt. Next week those INTs will be TDs and this will be the trend for the rest of the year. The Dawgs have a date with Ohio State in January. Believe That.

did any of you stafford haters who keep throwing up his stats see how those ints were made? The first one was his fault for being a little greedy. he should have dumped it off to ware but my guess was feeling he could zip it in there for the long one. even then the DB made a great play because that pass was on target. The 2nd int was a no call pass interf. call that bounce off of massaquoi, again not his fault just bad luck. The 3rd was right on target but massaquoi didn’t think he could throw it that far and pulled up about 7 yards short where that left the DB in position to make a play. he could have easily have had 2 tds and 1 int…with close to 200 yards passing. just a few thigs to work on at practice now. all in all, for a feshman, he did great. looked like David green. cool as an Ice cube. I still would like to see what Joe Cox can do. maybe next week we can work him in.

I hope the comments about boooing JT III if he comes back into play are not true. I remember our crowd booing David Green against Clemson because they wanted DJ and it was sooo wrong. Mathew Stafford is a great talent, but he needs to be developed in the right game situations. CMR knows how to develop. If CMR starts JT III it for 2 reasons only. 1. He gives us the best chance to win/not lose. 2. It allows MS to develop wihtout major psyche setbacks.

I hope JT III is healthy and ready to go against UAB. If not, I hope you MS at all costs are right.

Let’s think for a minute, who has more knowledge about our program, all of us - “the know it all BLOGers”? Or a proven coach that wins championships? CMR knows exactly what he is doing. He has given Joe T. the starting job for a few reasons. 1) He is a senior. 2) Joe T. has dedication to the UGA program second to none. He would play QB, wide out, ball boy, or LM’s color guy on the sideline if it helped us win. 3) CMR has watched film, he knew that we would roll with WK, beat USC, and that we won’t really be challenged until UT comes to town. By that time MS will have some experience under his belt and will take the starting job. 4) The only real threat that Joe T. has is MS. Cox is not a threat, in my opinion Blake Barnes should transfer to Ole Miss, and Stafford has to get to know the offense (which he has done). I hate to see Joe T. get hurt, and any TRUE Dawg that thinks that this is a good thing is completly wrong. So let us all have just a little confidence in our head coach and stop second guessing him. He has, after all won 2 SEC championships in the past couple of years.

I was going to direct to lawdawg and pj, about MS’s INT/TD ratio (the second was pass interference and would’ve been a touchdown), but atlxmen covered that nicely. I think JoeT will have to miss a few practices with that ankle this week. That means MS should start, and 2nd will be left up to either JoeT or JoeC. Depending on whether C does well in practice this week, and/or if CMR can go with how he knows JoeT would play, even without much practice, versus what JoeC can show this week. I think BlakeB should transfer, and I wish him the best. We don’t need as many QBs on a team as we have RBs or WRs. Maybe he can go to Miss ST and give Croom a shot at more then 3 wins next year…

” As I said on another blog, they need a bust of Erk on the Dawg walk for our players to rub his head before a game.”

I’m thinking that they need a life-sized full bronze statue of Erk standing next to the Dawg Walk encouraging the players. My only worry about that is that too many players might injure themselves headbutting him.

I agree that if our offense continues to play as it did yesterday, we could easily lose to Tennessee, Florida, Auburn and Tech. Hopefully, having the two suspended offensive linemen back will help, but we’re still mighty thin there (especially with the two injuries against the Gamecocks).

Stafford impressed me, but he still has to improve a lot to win the SEC. I watched the game a second time last night, and he impressed me more the second time. I definitely feel that the second two interceptions were not his fault (pass interfereince on one and MoMass’s misread on the other).

I think that MoMass saw a lower pass than he was used to with JT3 and slowed slightly in order to catch an underthrown ball. Unfortunately for all but SC, Stafford’s throw was stronger with a lower trajectory than one of JT3’s and so it went well past where MoMass thought it was going to end up. This should not happen later in the season.

I believe that there were a couple of other passes where the recievers misread the strength of the throw. That should improve with more practice (the receivers getting more used to his velocity and style).

Anyone who thinks Joe T. should continue to start is a frickin’ idiot. Joe T. has no business even being an SEC QB. He has no talent to speak of. My god, did you see that pass into the endzone in the first quarter? It looked like a dead duck falling out of the sky.

Kevin Butler was right. This is big boy football. We’re not in the business to spare someone’s feelings. Our next 3 games should be wins. It’s the perfect time for Matt to get reps and experience.

As for the people claiming Joe T. wouldn’t have thrown any INTS, please shut up. As horrible as his passes are and the way he throws dead ducks around, there’s no way to no. I can tell you one thing. There’s no chance in hell he could have made at least 5 of Staffords completions. I do find it funny that Joe T. looked worse against a D-1AA opponent that Stafford looked against the Cocks on the road.

Hey dawgh8er: Consider that MS at this time last year had just started his final year as a high school student and with no game-time experience at the college level and to be thrown into a game he didn’t start with very little college experience and that his performance was “GOOD”, not great, but he finished the job and came away with a win. Consider, if he continues to play in the rest of the games up to the Tech game, just how GREAT he is going to be and what he is going to do to DESTROY Tech. After the game, maybe you won’t be able to call dawg fans “idiots” ever again. You will deserve whatever happens in that game and it couldn’t happen to a better “IDIOT TECH FAN - YOU.

Hey dawgh8er: I’m not through with you yet - one thing I forgot - you elaborated about GA playing high school teams, obvious that you haven’t looked at Tech’s schedule this year. If you have, you would realize that Tech is playing a couple of high school games also, plus a girl’s school. Let me remind you who they are: Sanford (a girl’s school), Troy (what’s with Troy - I thought they were a school for young cadels and misbehaved teenagers), Virginia, Maryland, NC State, NC and Duke - all lower, weeker teams in the ACC. It’s a shame you don’t have to play Auburn, Florida, LSU, Alabama, Tennessee, S. Carolina, Arkansas, all of which would be losses for your TECH team. You don’t even have to play Fla State or Boston College, both which would be losses for you and your TECH team. So, before you run off your mouth again, which shows you are not using your intelliligentTECH brain, try looking at your own school’s schedule and you will notice that most of your opponents are “Pancy” teams. We don’t need you to be on our GA blogs. So, stay with the blogs that relate to your input.

After saturday night dawgnation we have seen our future. the kid has all the tools. the golden arm, ice water in the viens, and that certain something special that you cant describe but you know it when you see it, and i saw it saturday night.

With all that being said coach MR could give the job back to jt3 for one reason. He hnows the playbook cover to cover. Did you notice the sets we were running before jt3 was injured. Two tailbacks in the backfield at the same time. on any play a combination of danny ware, thomas brown or kregg lumpkin in the game. I think above all this is what our coach is looking for in our quarterback. Someone with a complete grasp on what he wants to do, someone he can call any play he desires at any moment in the game. We have UAB, COL. and Ole Miss the next three weeks. The key to our season is how much of this playbook can Matt Stafford digest before we get to the big three( tennesee, Uf, and AUB). Because if he can grasp a majority of it it could be Two in a row baby, with several more to come

Save up your dollars for the UGA National Championship game fund. I have a feeling were are going to be cashing that check in the next few years.

And as far as Joe T—-he wasn’t looking disappointed about not being in the game. In fact he looked like he was rehabing at Club Med. Stuff happens. We won’t win every game this year, but you can be certain of one thing.

Hey, John: Dang right we’re happy - despite the 3 INTs. And it wasn’t Auburn, Florida or Tennessee, but it WAS SC on the road, and we won, and that’s a good start. Stafford has that certain je ne c’est quoi: if you saw the game, you know he has it - despite the 3 INTs. You wouldn’t nearly have Stafford’s poise if you were just picking out apples.

To any of the Gators & Vols who say it was just South Carolina, how did your respective teams fare against them last year?

cuz, how is your daughter, hope all is well, been thinking about the family? BUlldawg has been smoking that nasty stuff again thinking Auburn will lose to LSU, Florida, UGA all at home. If that happens it will be a history making losing streak at home…He is full of it, really a egoistic individual.Notice how many times he repeats the same sentence?

Indy be fair we both know ND plays a much tougher schedule than we do and they do it every year. Yes they had problems with Tech, but that was game one and unfortunnately Tech is getting respectable again. I would not want to face ND in a bowl game unless it’s for the chamionship.
