Jackets can’t grasp how big this will be

Terence Moore

No question, Georgia Tech has the talent and the coaching to knock the shine off the Golden Dome by the end of Saturday night. Whether the Yellow Jackets do so will depend on a couple of things, starting with the lesser of those things: Can they finally get it right involving Calvin Johnson, their magic wide receiver?

From the opening kickoff through the final gun, Tech’s offensive brain trust must keep sprinkling Johnson’s considerable pixie dust for a change. He’ll match his quickness against a Notre Dame secondary with starters who are all returning and who are all seniors, but who are all slow.

As for that bigger thing: Will the Jackets avoid becoming an emotional rambling wreck for the evening? Only the ghosts of Heisman, Alexander and Dodd know for sure. Such a response also applies to that Calvin Johnson thing, especially since new play-caller Patrick Nix is an unknown entity, but let’s return to that emotional thing. Said Tech running back Tashard Choice, “It’s big when you play Notre Dame, a very prestigious college, and we understand that. We understand the hype around the game, but you also have to tell yourself to calm down. Get your emotions under control and understand that it’s a football game. You’ll tire yourself in warm-ups just thinking about the hype.”

Added Tech defensive tackle Joe Anoai, reflecting on the mood of his teammates during practices with The Notre Dame Game approaching, “We term it as a ‘controlled frenzy.’ You want to have a lot of energy and enthusiasm, but you have to be controlled in the mental sense, because if you get too excited, you can do some stupid things out there. We’re definitely excited, but not overly excited. We’ve been in situations like this before.”

Uh, no, the Jackets haven’t, and it’s not even close. Although Tech shocked Auburn during two of the past three years, there was little hype for those games compared to the Game of the Century feel that those in the Jacket Nation have attached to The Notre Dame Game. In addition, Auburn wasn’t ranked higher than 15th either of those times compared to the Fighting Irish coming to town at No. 2. Tech did ambush No. 3-ranked Miami last season, but the Jackets traveled to the Orange Bowl without pressure after collapsing the week before against mediocre Virginia.

Then there is Tech’s yearly grudge match against Georgia. It’s a rivalry, but it’s a highly overrated one, especially since the Jackets have won just thrice in the series since the first George Bush was president. More significantly, nobody cares about Jackets versus Bulldogs east, west, north or south of Georgia’s state line.

Everybody cares about Notre Dame versus anybody, and rarely has a Tech football team encountered all of the following at once: A packed house at Bobby Dodd Stadium. An opponent ranked this high in the country. Not only a nationally televised audience preparing to watch the Jackets play somebody at home, but in prime time on a network. Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Notre Dame. Only the Yankees and Duke basketball rival the Irish when it comes to spurring a slew of negative and positive thoughts among others.

So, after days, weeks and months of hearing about, preparing for and dreaming about The Notre Dame Game, the Jackets will rush through their tunnel to the sound of nearly unprecedented screaming in search of their biggest home victory over somebody this lofty since Tech shocked No. 1-ranked Alabama.

That was 44 years ago, when Tech coach Chan Gailey was in elementary school around Americus. Since then, he has participated in enough big games, ranging from those involving Gators, Broncos, Dolphins and Steelers, to learn what players should do. “We’ve got enough guys that have played in big games that understand what’s going on,” Gailey said. “I’m going to make sure I address it with some of the younger guys. All of the lead-up is nothing. The game is what’s important, so you want to make sure you control the emotions at game time.”

Unfortunately for Tech, the team that understands Gailey’s big-game approach more than anybody is Notre Dame. While Tech plays in this type of ga-ga environment about once every couple of decades, Notre Dame does so about once every week. It’s just that Tech has Calvin Johnson, and Notre Dame doesn’t. Still, if the Jackets do use Johnson like they should, it won’t matter — if they go from ga-ga to gagging after the national anthem.

Thanks, Terence, for another of your extremely positive articles. At least we always know where your preferences lie…

Also, here’s from someone about 1200 miles west of the GA state line that cares quite a bit about the GT-UGA game.

I honestly believe that your writing continues to get even more depressing over time.

Man, I hope Terence Moore enjoyed the orgasm he had writing about the great Notre Dame. It seems he is the one who went from ga-ga to gagging here.

Notre Dame has done nothing to deserve to be #2 in the nation outside of being voted so by a bunch of journalists and coaches.

That is why the game has to be be played, Mr. Moore. But then again, you would not know that would you?

I wish T Moore would occasionally read what is said about his work.

But I don’t think either he nor his bosses give a rat’s a$$ about those of us subjected over and over to his drivel.

Seems to me it would be as easy to find a writer who is a “homer” and writes about the positive aspects of the hometown team as it was to find this SOB.

I know I would enjoy reading more and maybe even consider spending money on the AJC.

I’m actually a T. Moore fan. I became a fan after reading his article after the death of Woody Hayes. TM actually supports his views and opinions whether I agree or not. The question is is the this game too big for the Wreck. I don’t have the answer but can’t wait to see. It’s an opportunity you dream about, and I am extremely happy for the players. Everybody bashes RB, but I think it is a huge advantage to have a 4 yr. starter in this game. RB may not have all the talent of D1 QB’s, but he has heart. The fact that this kid has to listen to all the criticism and not let it get to him demonstrates his class. I believe, and hope, that he has the break-out game and season we’ve been waiting for. Man, it feels good to be this close.

Clean Old Fashion Hate is still quite intense rivalry. I have been to the last 9 Georgia tech- Georgia games. When these teams get together, no matter what happens on the field, it is always wild in the stands. Sit in the student section of the next one and see if u think it is an overated rivalry.

You’re a consistent idiot, Terence. Consistently pathetic…stay away from college football and just write about your boys in the NBA. They’re your kind of guys. Heavily overpayed and they perform like crap. Consistently biased, consistently unresearched columns, consistently horrible…when will the AJC gage your popularity (or lack there of) and drop you like Tech is going to drop Notre Dame Saturday night… You would know all about big games and how it feels wouldn’t you, because you’ve played in so many of them. No, you just sit and write garbage for a living. Must be nice, my dead relatives could come up with better crap than this.

By the way, my high school teammate Calvin Johnson appreciates all the love. He, like the rest of us, realizes what certain characteristic you have to have to get respect from Terence Moore. Shame on you Terence, consistently pathetic…

GO JACKETS!!!!!!!!

P.S. “Thrice” isn’t a number, and as Buzz pointed out, it’s 5 times: ‘89, ‘90, ‘98, ‘99, ‘00.

But I remember Moore knocking Notre Dame for firing Willingham (obviously b/c he was black, and we know how Moore plays the race card) and after Willingham is gone, first year with Willy’s boys, Weiss turns that team around.

Now Moore is Kissing Notre Dame’s Behind, why dont we call you the Token-Anti-Southern-Yankee-Black reporter.

so ‘Biatch’

how many people outside Georgie read the ajc. None! Point is Moore and Bradley constantly bash the home town teams.

It’s not just GT, they do the same to UGA, Bradley as long as your losing, and Moore as long as the ‘White Man’ has control.

Coming from a GT fan, and knowing UGA as a Journalism school, you’d think the AJC would hire decent writers, they dont. That is the reason I don’t buy ajc print, otherwise I would.

They never kiss the a$$ of ga teams, and writing for the ajc, ga sports should be the center of attention. You sound like a liberal-yankee bast@rd whom moved here. This isn’t espn.com as well as it is not anti-ga-sports.com.

Moore and Bradley have been historically @$$-holes, dumb@$$$es, and most importantly wrong.

Terrence, you are making progress. I kept waiting for the punch line - you know, the one where it is a racial conspiracy if Tech, or Notre Dame should win. Maybe there won’t be enough black refs on national tv? Did Tech hire enough black hot dog vendors? Maybe we should root for ND because there didnt’ appear to be enough black fans entering? How about a racial percentage breakdown of Tech vs. Notre Dame so we can see why your rooting for whom.

Get out of town, man.

I’m with you Mr. Moore—except for the part that lauds Calvin Johnson. He may be great one of these years (or maybe he’ll be one of those guys who’s a better pro than college player), but he isn’t great yet. An objective observer would note that he drops too many balls and tends to disappear in big games. Perhaps you recognize this latter point but choose to blame it on the coaching staff for not getting him more “involved.” This is college, if CJ is as good as advertised he should dominate all comers and schemes——he doesn’t. Otherwise, you’re right; to Tech this is some kind of game of the century, to ND it’s hardly a weekly battle. Maybe Tech can catch them looking ahead.

Terrence, Tech better have more than just Johnson. Last year ND didn’t have 4 DB’s who were up to snuff. Saturday Johnson will see doubles and triples all night long. So I hope #2 & #3 wideouts can bring it. My money’s with Samardzija and McNight v Tech’s D as opposed to Johnson & ????? v ND’s D

I do not live in Georgia but I read the AJC to get a regional perspective. I have a sibling who went to UGA so I understand how important football is to you guys. One of my fondest college football memories was watching GA Tech come up to my state and knock off UVA in the early 90s. It was great to read all the homewtown columnists the next day. A lot like Mark Bradley they were homers and apologists. While they were columnists and as a result need to have an opinion, when that opinion blurs their judgement it becomes a bias. There is no doubt that this guy is going to get his hate mail because he is not numb with morphine like Bradley and considers the possibility that Tech may not be up for a game like this. Funny thing is that while most give Tech a shot because RB can have great moments and CJ is a remarkable talent, I had yet to read anything in the national media that gave Tech a shot to be within a touchdown until I saw the Vegas odds and read the AJC. I can tell you one thing though, the defense of ND is no longer slow or old. They recruited two of the top five DBs to come out of high school last year and they will play. We will also see if CJ can take a shot because he will have his bell rung. Should be fun to watch.

Hey Terrance, we have seen games this big, you apparently missed the nationally televise game with Florida State at home with game day a few years back. By the way, if we do not win tomorrow, we are still 0-0 in the conference and what happened was what people expected…BUT if ND does not destory us, the whispers of OVERATED will become chants, and then…. so TECH has nothing to lose, all to gain, ND has everything to lose! Three Times Eh? Can’t even get your facts straight, Like calling the ND secondary slow? They are quick, not fast, But against OSU where everyone made that statement it wasn’t 100% speed, it was lack of rush on the QB, It was biting on the play action and everyone wanting to make the big play, in the big game. This isn’t a Big Game, this only has hype becasue its the First Game of the Season and it should be mearly a Warm Up game for the Irish who play Penn St. next week. Get your facts straight! The only speed on your team is Johnson and he didn’t score multiple TD’s at all last year (proven fact unless you guys can’t keep a record sheet either)! Enjoy the game, enjoy the money that is being brought to your school, I wish you luck on the season but not tomorrow night! GO IRISH!

Terence,

I remember when you came to talk to us in a English class while I was at Tech. Okay, so it was a sports literature class and I got early enrollment that quarter so I could take it. We all deserve a break, right? You told us that day that your job was to write things that got people to react, good or bad. The problem is that you think too much of yourself when writing. I know you don’t care if people like you, because you’re established and all that crap. But you just don’t make any sense. Is Georgia - Florida a rivalry? Be careful how you answer that in these here parts. It’s not one by your definition of recent history. What about Army-Navy? Is that a rivalry? No “football” significance but it’s important.

Did you go to Notre Dame? If so then you’re warranted your love fest for them. But if you didn’t then you my friend are the precise reason why people don’t like the Irish. They are nothing more than an over-hyped “old” program with lots of money and a historical following. Their most famous coach in the past few decades is known by “non Irish believers” to be a cheater everywhere, including the Golden Dome, that he’s been. Just check those records of the programs after he’s left them. I doubt you’ve ever written a provocative column on that seeing how you’re so dedicated to writing about things being done properly and fairly in the world.

Nobody can deny the marketing & prestige power that Notre Dame brings to the table. And they may beat us Saturday night. But in the end I know absolutely nobody that attended Notre Dame. So there’s not anybody that I’ll take any crap from Sunday and beyond. That includes a guy who writes articles with the hopes of me and others (by your own admission back in 93) getting p** off at his unfounded arrogance. And if you did attend Notre Dame then that’s fine, because in essence my response to you is one to everyone that pretends to be a part of Notre Dame. Being Catholic or enjoying the movie “Rudy” doesn’t qualify you people automatically.

Astute commentary Terrance. I feel for sorry for you—this is tough crowd. Difficult to write an objective piece about the home team in this part of the country. Truth is this game will be like ND’s opener with Pitt last year: “Over at halftime”. Tech will not be able to contain Quinn, Samardzija, McKnight , or the running of Walker and freshman Munir Prince (who should get in the game and can’t wait to see play). It’s all about speed and an offensive show that Tech hasn’t seen in years. Terrible Irish Defense? We might be so bad we might have to play our freshman defensive backs. Sad thing is, we’ll have to repeat this debacle next year and it won’t be as much fun as doing it in Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Hi al of you who doubt Notre Dame, and disrespect your own Ga Tech team by ignoring glaring reasons this game will be good. O.K. Notre Dame’s defensive secondary is a little slow, but it does include the guy who ran a punt back on USC, and does very well with pressure (Zbikowski). Also, can Calvin Johnson keep with the Colts like offense of the Irish…two talented recievers, a good/great running back, and an intelligent quarterback. I like that people don’t realize that opponents defenses become suspect when playing the talent on the field and the braintrust wearing bling like Mike on the sideline…hmmm do people really think when they write some of these articles??

You can bash TM all you want for not being a “homer”, but truth be told, he is just being honest with the fans of GT. Most out side of Georgia will agree that GT is a one sided team, who without CJ would barely be worth mentioning.

Mark my words, tomorrow’s game will just a warm-up exercise for Notre Dame, to get them a little live practice against GT so they can be better prepared for the “real” teams they will face later in the month…

42-10 in favor of the Irish…Once Zibby takes out CJ, the rout will be on…

It’s amazing the hate I’ve seen in the South over the last 20 yrs living here. I respect both GT and UGA for their occasional “big” game. However, there is so much more to ND than anyone here realizes. That’s too bad. There’s not school in the country that doesn’t want to be part of playing the “tradition” of ND every once in a while. Oh, sorry, I forgot, UGA would never schedule them out of conference cause of their “tough SEC schedule”. Once again I admire UT for at least scheduling them every few years home/home.

Enough already, ND does indeed know big games. Yes, they got bombed by OSU last year in Charlie’s first year. We need help in the secondary but they will be better this year. Sorry to disappoint you but GT defense is not better than USC last year and we scored 30 against them. Is GT going to score 30 tomorrow? hmmmmm….

Wallow in your hate speech southern boys instead of respecting one of the finest traditions in “acedemics” and the game. You should be proud that your Universities want to be part of it.

How good CJ will be this season wont be all CJ’s doing. Alot (most) will depend on who throws the ball (Pun intended)Lets face it Gailey biggest drawback as coach (he has many drawbacks) is his inability to admit that Ball is a mistake and should be on the bench. We have been waiting for 4 years for him to live up to his pontential.Until he lives up to his pontential, ND wont be the only team to defeat GT.

These are all returning starters and they aren’t as slow or bad asb people say they are.
