Don’t believe it’s ‘hype’

Mark Bradley

A word or two about an issue that seems to arise (in some sectors) whenever I make a prediction (which I do, as you know, rather often). I do not — repeat, do not — predict anything simply to elicit a response from the readership. Never. Ever.

Any prediction I make is something that, sometimes for better but often for worse, I really and truly believe. I really and truly believe Georgia Tech will, as noted in this space Wednesday, beat Notre Dame.

I might well be wrong, but if I am it won’t be because I have any agenda — common complaints: that I’m trying to “set up” the team I pick to win or “fire up” the team I pick not to win — other than the longstanding belief that predictions are the fun part of sports.

When I was growing up and reading every paper I could get my hands on, the thing I always wanted to know was: Which team did the writer like to win the big game? I liked reading the ones who’d make a pick and tell you why. I liked somewhat less reading those who hemmed and hawed for 700 words and wound up saying, “Time will tell.”

Time always does tell, but much of the charm of sports lies not in the event itself but in the anticipation. We all wonder who’s going to win. We all have an opinion in that regard. I tell you what I think. If I’m wrong (and I often am), I’ll say so in the convenient year-end Accountability Scoreboard. If I’m right, I’ll give myself a little psychic pat on the back and move on to the next big game. Which would be Georgia at South Carolina.

I like the Gamecocks in that one.

OK, then practice what you preach. Be like one of those sports writers you used to admire who would “make a pick and TELL YOU WHY.”

You managed to write a whole article and say exactly 7 words about your actual prediction.
Which is why it seems like you are just trying to provoke.

because you don’t actually do any reporting or sportswriting.

What the hell are you talking about?

Talk sports, man, sports! I thought my days of psychology lectures were done when I graduated. Perhaps WHY you think South Carolina will beat Georgia would be a bit more helpful, and also a bit more informative.

It would also help to explain your apparent mental illness involved in thinking South Carolina will win. Go Dawgs!

The University of Georgia will beat South Carolina. First of all, the defense is just plain mad. The ole ball coach will be going through ten quarterbacks on September 9th because none of them will be able to handle the Mad Dogs. Thomas Brown will prove that Coach Richt was right in going with him instead of Darius Walker. Brown is going to have a huge year. After Columbia, N-E-X-T is the only thing the Dogs need to worry about. Gooo Dogs!!!

Mark Bradley, you are in fact a complete IDIOT! In 349 words you actually devoted 7 to making your prediction. You said yourself you liked reading the writers picks of who would win AND WHY….but once again you show your ignorance and write a bunch of psycho-babble garbage.

GOOD JOB! maybe next week you can write for the high school paper about some moronic topic and not give a reason for your statement….

Mark, thanks for explaining. As an aspiring sportswriter myself, I really believe that I’ve developed a much better understanding for the key factors that I should examine when making a prediction, and then incorporate into my column … oh wait, I’ll probably just borrow the five paragraphs you’ve written here reminding reader that predictions are not “hype,” then write a single sentence about who will win. Why? Who cares, I’m a sportswriter …

Although I am a die hard dawg fan, I have to say that this game does and has always scared me. No matter what the reasons, SC has a way about them that makes the game a toss up. It will be a hard faught game for sure, but i certainly see why the Cocks would be favored this year. The reason i do not bet on sports is because loyalty always wins out. UGA 28 SC 21.

I dont care who Mark Bradley picks cause last time i checked the roster of UGA and south carolina (or tech or notre dame)…Mark Bradley doesnt play for either…therefore making his opinion about as useful as a weiner flavored lollipop.

Personally I think he is a genius when compared to the lame version of a stand up comic that is one jeff schultz. But it is really easy on this end to critisize and make predictions.

This comment is more so to the first article, I just got to it too late to make a comment on it.

As soon as Notre Dame gets ranked where they are, there are a thousand skeptics telling you whats going to go wrong. I’m not saying that the Irish may not falter at all this season. In fact they probably will, thats the parody of college football, but they will not falter against Georgia Tech. “Mr. Atlanta” Mark Bradley seems to have written this article purely on thought and feeling rather than on fact. So I figured I’d key Mr. Bradley and the rest of you in on some facts. (Let me say before I start my facts, I hate the words last year. What happened last year, happened last year. The last time I checked my calendar it was August of 2006 not 2005. Although most of my facts have to do with last year, they make valid points for this year.)

2005 national passing rank ND-5th GT-90th national rushing rank ND-55th GT-49th national ppg. rank ND-8th GT-103rd

The point I am getting at is simple. Georgia Tech didn’t have what it takes to beat the Irish last year and they certianly don’t have the firepower to do it this year. The Irish are returning 8 offensive starters. The Rambling Wreck are returning 4 defensive starters. (Those lost include the top three tacklers and their enitre secondary.) I’m still not sure how anyone (that includes you Bradley) can assume that a brand new secondary can stop Brady Quinn, Jeff Samardzija and Rhema McKnight. (Who incase anyone forgot was ND’s leading receiver in 2004 and is probably their most talented receiver.) I just cannot fathom how Georgia Tech will stop the Irish.

That brings me to the matchup of Georgia Tech’s offense against the Irish defense. All the talk about a slow defense means nothing when you do not have an offense that has the ability to throw the ball. With the exception of Calvin Johnson, GT has no major threat. I think the Irish will be able to keep Johnson at bay. Also, I would love to know what makes Mr. Bradley such an expert on when a player is going to have a breakout year. Tashard Choice has big shoes to fill in replacing P.J. Daniels, the Yellow Jackets leading rusher from a year ago. Call me crazy but he may need time to adjust, I don’t think the national stage in the first game is the easiest way to do that. Aside from the fact he is fairly inexpierecned at starting at tailback, he also has to deal with the veteran defensive line of Notre Dame. Trevor Laws and Derek Landri are two big run stopping defensive tackles to go along with All-American candidate Victor Abiamiri and defensive end.

I don’t see it. I don’t see the Wreck pulling of an upset. In fact, you like to make predictions like this second article says so I shall give you one of mine…Notre Dame 41 Georgia Tech 17

Columns like this are why I stopped subscribing to the Atlanta Joke of a Constiution newspaper. This is a totally worthless column and you should lose a weeks pay for wasting your editor’s time (of course it doesn’t look like he read it either). Why spend 283 words telling us how you didn’t like writers who wouldn’t tell you why they made the prediction they made & then not tell us why you made yours? I think the underlying subliminal message you are sending to yourself here is that you don’t like yourself very much. I think that maybe you should take some time off, spend a little time with a shrink, and start liking yourself again before attempting another pathetic column like that again.

Mark, I enjoy most of your columns, some I agree with, some I don’t. Still I wonder why all these people who believe you are not a good columnist keep reading you column. Even some who no longer subscribe… methinks they are the idiots. However, you did invite criticism by not explaining the SC-UGA pick. On the other hand, the Tech-ND pick was explained yesterday, so 7 words should be enough today. Finally,I do not for a single moment believe that you have “never, ever predicted anything simply to elicit a response from the readership”. This column is a prime example of you doing just that, and isn’t that the purpose of the “quick hit” anyway, to elicit responses, spur web traffic, to sell ads, and pay the bills?

Bradley,

Hey Genius, SC looked great tonight, didn’t they?

Thinking about changing your ridiculous pick?

Or how about this, when Tech gets stomped by Notre Dame, how about you change your even more ridiculous pick of the Bugs, with Reggie Ball at QB and Chan Gailey as coach beating the Dawgs, in Athens, this year… okay?

I thought Terence Moore was the worst columnist for this fish wrapper. I’m wondering if now I’ve found one worse.

You know what really stinks here, Bradley… is that because of your overlord buying out all the papers in this town, the AJC is all that is left. Not the AJ… not the AC, it’s now the AJC, and because y’all are the only game in town, no one is pushing y’all to be better than you are (which let me tell ya, isn’t very good).

And you know what, it shows… it really shows. Your paper has given the Dawgs the absolute worst beat writer they’ve ever had in the abysmal Carter Strickland. Your editors pushed Ken Seguira off of the sports pages, when he was one of the guys we connected with.

They’ve left a blatant racist to push his tired agenda on us with every column he writes. On the sports pages no less.

The only thing good left at this paper is Furman, and every once in awhile, Jeff Schultz.

And you can’t tell me to change the channel Bradley, because like I’ve said, you have a monopoly. Your stinkin’ fish wrapper is all there is if I want to get any information about the subjects I want to get information about.

And I bet that you and your bosses sit and wonder why y’all are losing subscriptions right and left, why people are walking away from your rag. I bet you attribute it all to the fact that the internet gives people free information. And yes, that is part of it, but not the majority of the reason why people are staying away from paying for the privledge to read this “newspaper.” No, y’all probably don’t want to have to look at the reasons why you’re losing so many people, so many subscribers.

The hardest thing we all have to do from time to time is to look in the mirror and see what’s really there, instead of what we want to see, Bradley. You and your bosses have been avoiding this for far too long. And the people who really suffer because of this, because your rag has lost touch with it’s readership, because your rag has swung so far to the left in your ideology in a town which is moderate to moderately right leaning… are all of us.

We suffer, every time we read a Terence Moore column. Every time your editors allow political bias to enter into “reporting.” With every drawing that the despicable Luckavich submits.

We suffer.

And y’all wonder.

And you know what Bradley, you used to be one of the ones we could count on to give us your best.

Read over this column again, and tell me it was your best, because I know you can do better, and so does everyone else here. Whether you pick whichever team, or hate on the Dawgs or whatever… who cares.

Just enough with the lazy writing because you’re the only dog in this town. You owe us more than that precisely because you are the only dog in town.

Leave the lazy writing to that idiot Carter Strickland or for Moore.

Ummm, BirdDawg, why are you getting so worked up over opinions? If you don’t agree with their opinions, simply state yours and leave it at that. Here’s hoping you seek help and take your medications before blogging again!

After watching SC play Miss State last night, I think Bradley needs to reassess his prediction. Even with inexperience at QB for UGA, they’ll be able to run the ball, unlike Miss State. Spurrier seems to be right in his rhetoric that “if they win more than they lose” that will be a good season for SC.

By BirdDawg

It wasn’t about opinions, and if you could read, you’d understand that.

It was about lazy writing.

I’m sick of lazy writing coming from this paper. Just because they’re the only gig in town doesn’t mean they can feed us crap and we have to like it.

Moore is crap. Luckavich is crap. Bradley is becoming crap.

Without competition, these lazy fools have gotten complacent.

By Pantherssuck

Who says you have to like it? No one is holding a gun to your head. Quite simply, if you don’t like what they’re writing, DON’T READ IT! It can’t get any simpler than that! Bradley thinks Tech will beat ND, and he thinks Carolina will beat UGA, those are opinions my friend. You’re really only worked up because he picked SC and not UGA to win, otherwise you wouldn’t have spewed your whineathon upon the rest of us. He stated his opinions, either deal with it or don’t read it!
