Richt’s new contract a puzzle
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
What’s up with these new-fangled (translated: needlessly convoluted) contracts for college football coaches? I still have a headache from reading the particulars of Mark Richt’s new deal with the University of Georgia.
Let’s see. In addition to Richt’s base salary of $270,000, he gets another $800,000 from television and radio, $530,000 through his shoe deal, $25,000 for winning the SEC East, $75,000 for winning the SEC championship, $25,000 for making a non-BCS bowl, $75,0000 for making a BCS bowl, $50,000 for finishing in the nation’s top five and $150,000 for winning a national title.
Oh, and Richt gets $50,000 for each year his team is ranked in the top 33 percent of the conference in graduation success rate and academic progress rate.
What. No bonus to Richt for each time Uga VI barks at midnight on Vince Dooley’s birthday?

Mr. Moore, what’s your gripe? Those are all legitimate incentives. You must not have had anything better to write about today.

TM, sounds like sour grapes to me. Richt’s contract is the norm in college football for over a decade. It’s not new-fangled contracts. Sounds like someone is jealous. What is your salary TM?

Terrence - you’re a f’ing moron. There are many different goals for a college football team, and thus, the contract stipulates rewards for each. How hard is this to comprehend? If Richt were black, you’d probably be complaining that he’s underpaid. You raci$t fool.

So does your fat boy Charlie Weiss not get any compensation from ND’s tv and radio coaches shows? I’m guessing he does. I’m also guessing he gets bonuses for hitting certain benchmarks. You sir are just not real bright.

This is about as interesting as the Hawks schedule being released today. I’m a journalism student and I can’t BELIEVE this guy gets PAID to write this crap! I could do this and totally make it INTERESTING and NEWSWORTHY. This is, by far, far from it.
Who let’s these people write this stuff over at the AJC? Do I need to walk down there before a Thrashers game and set them straight? Geez people. This isn’t content. It’s crap. Stuff we all know. Wooo!!! ;-)

So TM, do you EVER have anything positive to write about? Today UGA sucks, tomorrow it’ll be the Braves, and I bet you’re saving Friday to rip Braves GM Scherholtz apart for not doing enough by the trade deadline aren’t you? The AJC must have tenure because that’s the only explanation for your continued employment

One would think that someone in your position would readily know that head coaching contracts are incentive based. This is the norm throughout the ranks. With this mind, maybe the AJC should give you an incentive based contract, so if you ever wrote a good, informative and perceptive article you would get a bonus. Then again, based on your typical article, the AJC would never have to worry about paying the bonus.

After the latest 3 UGA recruits couldn’t cut the mustard in the classroom…Georgia Tech actually has the better recruiting class going for them. ScrewUGA.

All those bonus are nice but they should have deductions in there to make the contract balanced. Deduct $50,000 for every player arrested and double it if it is a felony. Maybe deduct only $1,000 for every “team rules” violation that results in a player being suspended for a game after all, it is the players and not the coach messing up. Take away another $50,000 for not covering the point spread, $100,000 for losing to Tech or AU, $25,000 for signing a high school player and then him not qualifing, and $10,000 for kicking the field goal instead of going for it on 4th down and less than a yard to go. That would make it a fair and balance contract. GO DAWGS!!!

I think TM writes this stuff because he is personally jealous of such an amazing contract. He just wishes he had one with incentives like Richt’s. LOL.
How about something interesting…
Like someone making a DJ Shockley jersey that is half Falcons, half Georgia and sewn together. Something fun and interesting would be better here, not something any UGA and college football fan knows.
To me, it’s like he’s trying to be a whistle blower, as if it’s negative or bad or Richt should get in trouble for his contract. It’s common, public knowledge. So, if he’s trying to be anti-Richt and anti-UGA, he’s done a GREAT job. If he’s trying to be a journalist and give us interesting information, he has failed at that miserably. If this crap can be written on AJC, I can’t imagine it being that hard to get a job there.

I’d like to see NEWS here. That’s what I’m trying to say.
For example, the Braves are being sold. You’d THINK the AJC would have an inside man. When’s the last time we’ve read anything about the sale of the Braves?
How about an update on Kari’s contract with the Thrashers? On the ownership legal battle?
If Atlanta wants to be ranked higher than 13th, we need better and deeper information from our HOMETOWN newspaper!
I find more information about the Thrashers on Canadian web sites than I do at the AJC. And that’s just SAD because they should be covering the Thrashers like the dew covers Dixie. I know this is off topic, but because this post by TM is so bad, I just wanted to make a point.

Terence,
I have a sneaking suspicion that you have an issue with Mark Richt’s contract. You’re barking up the wrong tree. If you’re looking for a story, why don’t you dissect Michael Adams’ deal? Any money that swine makes ought to be investigated.

If Richt is ever at a media event and TM is there, I wouldn’t blame Richt, at all, if he all the sudden, oh, I don’t know…
b***h-slapped TM in the face for writing this crap. It would be funny. And be a better story than this! Or maybe a pie to the face, like Bill Gates got years back.
I hate it when our own hometown newspaper disses our hometown teams. I mean, maybe in New York where they have nothing better to do than totally support the Mets and / or Yankees when they are winning or totally lash out at them when they are losing. But this is Atlanta. The AJC should be totally supportive of UGA and not try to be the UGA Police.

Since when the heck is a school 50 miles away considered a “hometown” team. Isn’t Mercer a “hometown” team by that same comparison? Or Kennesaw? Or heck, even Georgia State since they’re like 5 blocks from the AJC offices?

I wonder how coach Bowden’s is structured?

Folks, there was a time when we had some excellent sportswriters at the ajc, but since Jesse Outlar passed away the professionalism has been on a declining scale. On a rare occasion, Furman will still get lucky with one of his articles, but it is really sad that in a city the size of Atlanta, we are without “real” people as writers. Everyone wants to make a name for themselves with their bosses, so they create stories that incense and anger in order to sell papers. By the way, the largest single part of MR’s salary wil come through WSB’s advertisers in the form of a check from WSB. Taken right out of these so called sportswriters future earnings, right Terence!

TM what the hell is the story even about? Incentives ???? Lets see performance tied to your pay. Wish the AJC did that so you would have to look for a new job. Go ask David Justice what he thinks about it….

I believe that all the people that called this man a racist are idiots, and I also believe that the contract is very funky. Richt should have gotten more guaranteed to him and still given the chance to earn those bonuses.

I don’t see anything racist about this column. I also don’t think it amounts to much. MRs contract is the norm across the country. Incentives are the norm and I don’t understand what’s hard to understand. Some mentioned good reporting, I don’t see any investigatived reporting in the AJC nor any good scoops in any reporting. this was just an opinion column about something(new contracts) that the norm in todays college football. Not much of a column. As far as losing the 3 recruits, Geathers wasn’t being counted on at all because of his not signing the letter and his academics. Andersson is the one that hurts for ‘06 because the “O” line is where we need all the help we can get. We’ll survive!

hERE’S A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WHAT i MEAN BY LACK OF REAL REPORTING. The Geathers recruit for Ga. The announcement that he wouldn’t be coming to Ga. All summer Dawg fans have been trying to get accurate information as to what’s been oing on with him. Everyone thought he’d signed his letter an was working on grades to qualify. No from the AJC did anything but re-write press releases about him. The AJC must be telling us that NO writer had enough sources or cared enough about a big time recruit to find out that he HADN’T SIGNED HIS LETER AND REPORT THAT FACT? It’s this lack of good reporting that I miss. This is one good reason for Atlanta to be ranked #13 in the nation as sports cities, even though this won’t be mentioned as a reason. I haven’t read about it so I don’tknow. Why does it bother me living way out here about where Atlanta was ranked? being born in Savannah, Atlanta is the CAPTIAL of my home state, that’s why I care.

Freedom of Information act, that’swhat the AJC had to use to find out about Geathers? Man, that’s bad news reporting. No reporter had the inside contacts to find two sources and go with the story? I’m sure htis won’t be read, but why don’t some of you people who are complaining about a lack of reporting, pick up on this one and go with it. Maybe a bunch of us(together) could get an answer.

Hey Terry, slow news day in the ATL I guess. These types of contract aren’t new. Do some research. Apparently, you have no incentive to do so.
