McKay the commish? No way.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Rich McKay isn’t going anywhere. He never was, at least when it came to the Falcons general manager leaving to become NFL commissioner.
It isn’t a done deal that Roger Goodell will be Paul Tagliabue’s replacement, but it’s pretty close. For two reasons: First, Goodell has been Tagliabue’s right-hand man forever and involved in every major decision involving the league during their years together; second, Tagliabue wants Goodell to be the man.
In other words, this won’t resemble 1960, when it took 23 ballots for the owners to elect somebody named Pete Rozelle. Neither will it take the seven months of infighting that occurred in 1989 before Tagliabue was picked over long-time NFL executive Jim Finks.
In early August, when the owners vote this time, Goodell will be the league’s pick, and McKay will remain the Falcons’ man.
In other words: Both sides will win.

Great news for the Falcons. Rich, sorry you didn’t get the commissioner’s job, but we’re extremely lucky to have you running the show here in Atlanta!

Terence, I hope you are right. McKay has done some good things since being with the Falcons and he seems to have an eye for talent. But in this highly political world of professional football can you ever really be sure what the owners will do? I wonder what Mr. Blank’s feelings are toward Goodell??

I am glad we get to keep Rich, but I am also sad because I think the NFL as a whole may have lost a great commissioner. I do think Goodell will be good fit, but I am a McKay fan.

Good glad to hear the Falcons will be able to keep the best GM this franchise has ever had. He knows his stuff and is a nice guy to talk to. By keeping him the Falcons will be contenders for a while.

The Falcons needed to get with the times and they did with new leadership and ideas. What I think is needed is continued consistency. Moreover team needs a good GM, espicially when greater things are on the horizon.

It is a relief. I also believe that Rich McKay is the corner stone to build a definite championship team in Atlanta. He has the savvy and experience to perform for us the fans.

The Falcons and Arthur Blank are lucky to have Rich McKay. Just having him as our GM while being considered for the commish position speaks volumes about his ability. Now we just need to see it on Sundays!!!

Dont count your chickens before they hatch Falcon fans, I have not heard the new Commish named just yet. It seems like lately that everytime we here that a deal is all but done, something goes wrong. So, until Goodell is named the new Commish, this uneasy feeling I have just wont go away. I wish McKay all of the luck in the world, but I dont want to see us without him running our team.

terrance - i ssume this is your opinion and not fact since you are a slimy columnist. Why not tell the readers that b/c it looks like most of the blogers (faithful fan & uga b) seem to think you are reporting facts, but you are not a reporter you are a columnists. you slimeballs should have to qualify your columns by stating that it is entirely opinion.

Mckay we the fan in the ATL needs you to stay to builded a power house football that is feared. This town is hurting to win. you builded a defense in Tampa and we hope you build one here to but go one more step. Build a feared offense to. We have most of the skill player on offense . The offense line bar none is the weak link now. up grade the offense line scheme that Gibbs has brouth to Atlanta to have some power offense tackels. This is not denver. The NFC is full of big speed player WE need BIG speed player at the offense line that are killer mean with skill’s!

McKay would take the job, if only to get away from pot-head Ron Mexico. When can we expect the ajc to run the foto of Ron + blunt?
