The Tuesday Countdown

Jeff Schultz

10: Just back from vacation, which included swims in two oceans and a tour of College of Charleston with my son. For those who have never been there, the college (founded in 1770) is actually older than the U.S. The highlight of the tour was being told that, in the old days, good students were rewarded by being allowed to stand on the roof to watch the pirate hangings.

9: Which, of course, leads me to wonder what students might see standing on other college roofs. Alabama? Tennessee? Feel free to blog your own cheap shot. I’m just waking up.

8: I see where John Schuerholz finally acquired a closer (Bob Wickman) to help the Braves’ bullpen. Well, that’s nice. Where was this trade a month ago? We’ve all been standing on roofs, watching the Chris Reitsma and Jorge Sosa hangings.

7: If you don’t believe Schuerholz waited too long, it’s only because you’re comparing him to Billy Knight, who should’ve moved Al Harrington several weeks ago. Or months ago.

6: Nice to see that Joe Johnson is saying what Knight won’t acknowledge — that passing on Chris Paul was a monumental goof. Johnson to our Sekou Smith: “Seriously, I told him [Paul] I don’t even want to think about it anymore, what we could’ve done together. Because he’s the truth. … It’s unbelievable how far ahead of his time he is as a player.”

5: Tiger Woods is crying for good reasons again.

4: Just wondering: If Rich McKay is not going to get the NFL commissioner” job — and reports are he won’t — why not just pull out and avoid the distraction as the Falcons open training camp?

3: Greg Knapp is under more pressure than Michael Vick. Why? Because Michael Vick is not in danger of losing his job, and Knapp is.

2: Terrell Owens truly is special. It’s not anybody who can claim to be misquoted in his own autobiography.

1: A few more arrests and suspensions and the Bengals won’t have to make any cuts in training camp. Must remind David Pollack of the olds days in Athens.

Just like many brain dead fans, Schultz seems to think that when John Schuerholz is working the league to make a trade to improve the Braves that the other side is not a factor in when or if the players Schuerholz is seeking get traded or not. You see, Schuerholz has been trying to acquire a closer for a long time, but the other teams were still in their respective races and not yet ready to part with key players. But I’m sure you considered that when you wrote your blog, right Jeff? Oh and I guess the fact that 75% of the national league is still technically in contention (and all of those teams need bullpen help too) had nothing to do with the difficulty in acquiring a closer either, right? For guys who have nothing to do but write a column and a blog once a week, you sports columnist sure don’t spend much time on thought or research do you?

Somebody dial 911…Jeffery has been cut deep. Jeff…I luv ya man but, I ve got to agree with “braves fan” that your thinking is short sighted at best on this one. Schuerholz has had a history of making the quality acquisitions when we needed them, for the most part. In this case, I think your best course of action would be to apply direct pressure to the gaping wound inflicted by “braves fan.”

Good day.

“John Schuerholz finally acquired a closer…Where was this trade a month ago?”

Yeah, its supposed to be just that easy isn’t it? You tell the other teams what you need and what you are willing to part with and the trade just happens. Come on Schuerholz, just make trades happen. While you are at could you trade LaRoche for Pujols?

Braves fan— i’m not commenting on the work schuerholz was doing, beacuse i’m not qualified to do that. That being said, neither are you: You see, Schuerholz has been trying to acquire a closer for a long time, but the other teams were still in their respective races and not yet ready to part with key players. But the Indians were out of the race by mid May (both the WC and Division), and since that’s where we got wickman, the fact that fact that 75% of the national league is still technically in contention is completely irrelevant.

So maybe a few of Schultz’s words were misguided. but so are yours. So try chilling out and taking a frickin joke for once, nobody likes a jackass

Will you people chill out and give the guy a fricking break?? We have blown 20/40 saves, went 6-21 in june, fell 16 games out of the east and 10 out of the WC.

SO you’re saying we DIDN’T need a closer??? Seriously, i want people to answer this: do you think that we DIDN”T need a closer in may or june? he’s not putting a noose around schuerholz’s neck here, he’s just saying that we needed a closer a long time ago.

Too bad your kid is going to the “College of Knowledge.” Probably didn’t get in UGA. At least he can work for the AJC one day.

Well played, “ray”. After all, his son had that one coming, didn’t he?

I guess we can’t all be geniuses like yourself, attending such prestigious universities like Georgia.

You are right, Phil. Not everyone can go to UGA. COK will take anybody, though. Maybe you could get your GED and apply.

Hey guys - lighten up on UGA. It’s really not a bad school - I hear about 80% of their graduates go on to college.

Maybe, Jeff’s son can witness the hanging of Billy Knight. By the way, Odell must feel right at home in Cincinnati.
