Knight doesn’t get the point
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
New York — Not that there was ever much doubt, but Wednesday’s Round 2 made it official. Billy Knight doesn’t care one whit what his constituency thinks or wants. As if taking yet another forward in Round 1 wasn’t enough, Knight spent his second-round pick on …
Yet another forward.
It would have done no harm — and might have done much good — to have taken a chance on Dee Brown, the scrawny Illinois point guard, or Guillermo Diaz, the swift Miami combo guard, with the draft’s 33rd pick. Even if the Hawks sign a veteran point guard over the summer — and that’s a big “if,” given the convoluted issue of team ownership — they’ll still need a younger guy to bring along behind him. (Or so you’d think.) But the Hawks, once again, acted as if a point guard is last on their list of concerns.
Maybe Solomon Jones of South Florida is the next Kevin Garnett, but I kind of doubt it. And I doubt that a team still lacking a point guard is going to be transformed by the addition of two more power forwards.
And I doubt fans are going to Rise Up to support this woebegone team on the strength — more precisely, the weakness — of the 2006 draft.
And one last thing about Shelden Williams: I think he’ll be a good NBA player, but at this time with that pick he was the wrong choice.
Same as Marvin Williams a year ago. Same as it ever was.

Billy Knight is an absolute idiot! It is time that the ownership, whoever it may be, remove this moron from his position. I mean, how many drafts are they going to let him screw up before they realize he is totally incompetent?!?!?

he idea is to build a team, not a collection of guys who won’t reach their potential until they’re traded to a team that needs to fill a role with a player of their particular talent.
stop it billy. stop drafting players so you can trade them two years from now for draft picks or as throw-ins.

Billy,
Way to go, draft Sheldon Williams we needed him, over Foye and Marcus Williams. You know we dont have enough players at the 3,4 positions. I love the way you think. I know we are moving in the right direction under your leadership Billy. Whatever!!! Lets get serious, I was at every game this year down in the little sections were the Television are placed. I watched as we had trouble distributing the ball, finding the open man, and just a floor leader, no disrespect to Joe Johnson. Someone please help Billy Knight, he has done the unthinkible once again by passing on a point guard not just in the first round, but in the second. Has anyone ever heard the guy say we need a point guard? I believe that only Mike Woodson has said that. So Billy do me a favor, I know this is a big thing to ask but tell us what you are trying to do? Please

Awfull, awfull, awfull! Seriously, if anyone is with me I would like to start a fire Billy Knight campaign and picket in front of Phillips area. It concerns me that this guy is allowed to make the stupid choice year after year with no consequence. And Mark like you said Sheldon Williams is a good player who will probably be a good pro. But come on the fifth pick and you tell he’s the fifth pick two weeks out. If the guy impressed you that much Billy why not trade the the pick for a later pick and and another player (Preferably a point guard). That way get Sheldon and you get additional help. But noooo!! Billy’s so stupid he picks a guy at five that no one else is looking at and promises the the guy without looking to wheel and deal first. And the second round pick ridiculus!!! You got Dee Brown, Guillermo Diaz, Daniel Gibson and if you have to take a forward why not Leon Powe, Kevin Pittsnogle, Hollis from UCLA, or Alexander Johnson. I think the Hawks have found a way to make money by losing.

I just don’t understand why the Atlanta Hawks will try to build their team with players that don’t match the demographics of the fanbase in Atlanta. (that is a huge problem with the NBA in general). You are in Atlanta, not New York. Look at Dallas, Mark built the team with Nash and Dirk, and then evolved to a playoff team — which the fans support. The Mavs were much like the Hawks until Mark took over—I wonder if Knight has ask Mark for any pointers. The games I went to last year, we have no fans, I wonder why? We need fan support and we will not get that with the players we drafted. We need a Dirk to build this team around via free agency or the draft.

Mark, I could not agree with you more about the second round pick. I like Sheldon probably more than some but was dumbfounded by the 2nd round. Taking a big gamble on a player to prove that you are smarter than everyone else is dangerous and that is what picking Soloman reaks of.

Average Joe,
What’s your point? Are you saying that we need more WHITE PLAYERS, is that what your hinting toward? If so, don’t be a COWARD, and just say so. I’m black and would happy if we traded for Dirk or for Dwayne Wade, because both are great players and I don’t think Dirk would be better just because he’s white. Get a life, jerk.

Have you possibly thought that maybe Knight know something that we dont know… maybe he’s getting all of those forwards and more to help pull a trade together for someone else… so if he trades two forwards and harrington for a much needed point guard or center the roster will still have good talented depth at the forward slots.. Sorry to say this but i think just with the addition of a veteran pg like bobby jackson or someone in that mold the team will be alright … remember JJ is becoming a superstar ala mitch richmond or fat lever, and Josh Smith is becoming a beast on both ends… at that with the maturation of M Williams and you have what you need to win in the Eastern Conference .. 3 scoring options and a good defense.. and thats where the good defensive presence comes in from free agency.. THERES NO WAY the Hawks can get Ben Wallace unless they bring in Iverson ASAP .. and then that is still a dream… but maybe Knight knows that Sheldon Williams can also defend the 5… every one who analyze the draft said he’s the best post defender in the draft… if Boris Diaw can play center why cant Sheldon Williams..

HERE IS THE DIFFERENCE IN A GOOD GM AND A BAD ONE
Colangelo- Built Phx into a powerhouse for years to come… They had 2 plus next year they get 2 first round picks (one being the Hawks)
Jerry West- Gets Rudy Gay and Kyle Lowry on an already playoff caliber team. Plus they have 2 first round picks next year
Paxson- They get Tyrus Thomas on an already playoff team that is one of the youngest in the league. They started rebuilding when the Hawks did.
Billy Knight- picks Shelden Williams WITH A #5 on a team that wins 26 games and now has 8 forwards. He has no first round picks next year and is supposedly “rebuilding” Lets every team know who he is choosing two weeks prior to the draft
THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE IN A GOOD GM AND A BAD ONE

In a recent Sports Illustrated poll, nba players said Atlanta was third in teams they DONT want to play for, only behind Utah and Toronto. Nba athelets do not want to come here, period. Last night was one of the many reasons why.
Good luck getting that point guard. Dont hold your breath.

Atlanta Spirit- The attendance at games have dropped every year. You can expect this year to be the lowest in history. As long as Billy Knightmare is running this team, you won’t see much difference. If you can’t tell by these blogs…. there are about 10-15 people out of 250 that agree with Billy Knightmare. He is running this franchise into the ground. If he is not a major player in the market…. we just took a huge step backwards. We have zero picks next year, so this was his shot. I promise you, if we don’t win soon, Josh Smith will not want to play here. Everyone is tired of losing with Billy Knightmare and Woody.

Mark Bradley,
Here is a quote for you, from me to you.
“Only Billy Knight is the kind of utter idiot who can make Isiah Thomas look like a complete genius.”
That is the sad truth about this franchise. We could trade Billy Knight for Isiah Thomas, and we’d actually improve at the GM position!
There is no worse GM in professional sports than this glorified scout with no eye for talent, Billy Knight. Not the guy in Tampa Bay for the Rays. Not even Don Waddell, and he’s destroyed USA Hockey!
I am not a Steve Belkin fan, I think he’ll be a terrible owner, worse even than Donald Sterling or Kevin McClatchey for the Pirates. But at least, at the very least, Belkin will fire Billy Knightmare, and in doing so, makes this team better.

You’re right, Mark, Billy Knight should listen to the fans when drafting. If I’ve learned anything by reading the comments on Sekou’s blog, and your ramblings on the Hawks, it’s that the Hawks may have the dumbest fanbase in the Southeast.
Considering the collective IQ of most SEC school’s fanbases, that’s saying alot.
If you guys can’t see that 6’9” 260 Lb. Shelden Williams is not the same kind of player as the 3 swingmen we have drafted in the last 2 first rounds, then I can’t help you. They are SG’s and SF’s, he’s a pure PF, who could probably man up on most centers in a league light on true centers. That is needed more on this team than someone to generate offense outside.

I am with you Doc… I will picket with you.
Eric- considering Phillips was half empty for every game, I would think that a team would want all the fans they can get. By looking around the arena, I would say the IQ of a lot of the fans there aren’t too high either. I didn’t see many Ivy League grads at Hawks games, did you?

Billy is clearly incompetent. I think I like the owners, because I think they care about turning this franchise around, but what they apparently don’t understand is that their small fanbase only gets smaller when they allow their GM to make trades and draft picks that make no sense to ANYONE, except for him. Honestly, this team has had plenty of shots to get quality players through the draft, trades, and free agency, but we have squandered every opportunity to do the smart thing, with the exception of drafting JSmith. I simply don’t understand how they have the B!?LLS to draft two more mediocre forwards at the same size as every other player on the roster, when we have no point guard!!! Arthur Blank please buy the Hawks!!!

Shelden Williams may have been a bad pick but at least it was defensible due to our lack of big bodies, but passing on Dee Brown when the need was as great as it was to put it mildly “unfuckingforgivable!”
Billy Knight and the current ownership must go and go quickly. They have lost the fans, the city, and oh by the way more games than any other franchise during their tenure. I would rather watch the Oklahoma City/New Orleans travelling circus than this bunch and not because I dislike the players.
I like Josh Smith, ZaZa, and Joe but the snide arrogance of Billy Knight and this ownership group with really NO REAL ties to Atlanta sickens me! And before you mention the token ownership of the greatest Hawk ever, lets call it what it is: A white carpetbagging, control freak ownership group from Boston using Dominique as a trophy piece hoping to garner any form of credibility they can since they have none!
Welcome to Atlanta Mr. Belkin! Please bring order to the chaos and fix this mess!

The only positive thing about this draft is that Shelden Williams or Solomon Jones aren’t small forwards. They are both inside players who defend.
That being said, the Hawks could have made a move to get into the lower part of the first round to draft Marcus Williams. My guess is that Billy Knight, as Mark said, “doesn’t care one whit” about what we think. Of course, when Mike Woodson says there’s “no question we need a point guard”, fans are going to wonder whether he is simply powerless to choose who his own players are. When Woodson lists veteran point guards who are free agents and says, “Those are guys that can help put our ball club over the top. So hang in there with us, please”, the fans can get behind that. Billy Knight just continues to act smug, arrogant and indifferent about anyone else’s opinions. He’d do well to learn something from Woodson.
By the way, did any of you pay attention to BK last night during his ESPN interview? The guy is a jackass-and-a-half to act like he’s won something in his lifetime. Those who condescend without having achieved anything but failure are the most contemptible of creatures.

This team is FUBAR. From the ownership to the GM to the coach to the guys on the floor, there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO HAVE ANY CONFIDENCE WHATSOEVER in this team. Is there something going on we don’t know about? Someone trying to average under 1000 fans so the team can be moved somewhere else? Did the city of Atlanta do something wrong to deserve all of this?
Mr. Knight, you make me absolutely sick with what you perceive to be your higher basketball IQ than everyone else. You are arrogant, conceited, brash and you don’t give a damn what any of your fans (or other respected individuals around the NBA) think. Problem is, you have shown nothing that would lead people to believe that you actually know more about NBA basketball than the guy (singular) sitting in the upper seats. Get the hell outta town. I’m sure you can find at least ten 6’8” guys to help you pack your things and load them up. Hell, I’ll help. I’ll even bring punch and pie.

I have no confidence in the management of the Hawks and I can’t figure out why I even care about this team anymore. Billy has mismanaged this franchise, and what’s worse is that he doesn’t care what the fans think. When he disrespects fans like he’s currently doing, he’s just guaranteeing that the Hawks will play in an empty arena. And until Billy understands what it takes to build a fan base, this team will be stuck as the laughingstock of the NBA.

Hey people lets not get into this BLACK and WHITE stuff because we are all fans of the game. Everyone has an opinion and here is mine. Only thing that matters is job performance Knight can be bright green as far as im concerned but the fact is he’s done a poor job of bringing in veteran players who are committed to winning and has the ability to draw crowds in the Phillips arena. I felt we should have drafted Roy or Gay because of their skill level and potential. Looks like another year of misery.

And if you had done that, you would’ve seen your boy sheldon get pushed around by the likes of Marco Killingsworth Tyrus Thomas/Big Baby Davis, Tyler Hansborough (a freshman!), Cedric Simmons, and Eric Williams. Killingsworth dropped 34 on “the landlord”. Alexander Johnson of FSU scored 22. E Williams? 23. Hansborough had a cool 27. Simmons had 28. You get the point. What is he gonna do against REAL bangers like jamison, jermaine oneal, even dwight howard who are not only more skilled but also taller. HORRIBLE PICK

The Hawks are a joke and worse yet, an afterthought in the Atlanta sports market. The fact is, most of us do not believe Billy Knight is qualified to be a GM. His overconfident, borderline arrogant attitude has turned away most sports fans who would otherwise care about the Hawks franchise. I predict he will be out of a job within the next 1.5 years (before the 2008 draft). Now, on to more important subjects like Braves baseball, the Falcons and college football!

What position does Marvin play? What position does J. Smith play? What position does S. Williams play? They are all power forwards. If are goal is to get the 7th or 8th seed in the playoffs, then we may have a chance. I just don’t see how losing Harrington and gaining S. Williams is the step that takes us to the “promise land” We don’t have a first round pick in next year’s draft, which will be one of the best in history (Oden, Durant, T.Young, Noah, McRoberts, Hansborough, Big Baby Davis, etc.) I just don’t see how Shelden Williams is going to take us over the hump like some of the other players could have at #5. We now have 3 power forwards and a weak center with no true point guard. So, if our goal is to stay around .500, then we might reach our goal. Free agents don’t want to come here. How many more forwards do we need, Billy Knightmare must have a man crush on 6”8 –6‘9 forwards or something. What makes me angry is that he comes out and says he doesn’t care what the fans think, what GM comes out and says that even if that’s how feel? Billy Knightmare thanks he know everything there is about building a team what GM builds their team with nothing but Forwards and no true point guard? For years I have been a Hawks fan and I had hoped that Billy Knightmare could turn this franchise around but this draft have made me not want to step foot in Philips until at the least Billy Knightmare is fired. We may have passed on a very good point guard in Dee Brown and the next Wade in Foye or Gay, add another terrible draft to the already terrible Hawks draft history Thanks Bill Never Ending Knightmare.

vs. Tyrus Thomas (LSU): Shelden had 23 points, 13 rebounds, 4 blocks….
vs. Alexander Johnson (FSU): Shelden Williams had 27 points, 13 rebounds, 4 blocks, 4 steals….
(In game 2 vs. Johnson Shelden had 20 points, 16 rebounds, 4 blocks.)….
vs. Cedric Simmons (NC State): Shelden had 21 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks, 5 steals…..
vs. LaMarcus Aldridge (Texas): Shelden had 23 points, 6 rebounds, 4 blocks, 4 assists…..

So far, I am the only female who has responded. I have read thru this thread and have practically feel out my chair laughing at some of your comments. Too Funny.
This is what I have to say… First, I agree with KEN; don’t even play the RACE card. I don’t care about the RACE, NATIONALITY, RELIGION or SEXUAL ORIENTATION of Mr. Knight. We need to attract players to the HAWKS that will bring us a winning program.
But let me be perfectly frank about something that has not been mentioned here. We, Atlantans only want to support WINNING programs. If you really love the sport, then you will continue to attend the games (regardless of the record). But NOOOOO, that is not what happens to any team in Atlanta. As soon as the team begins the loose, the attendance drops off. That is the real reason why we will NEVER attract a major player - because the fans are really not fans of the game. We are only worried about our image as people.
Look at the Chicago Bears, the Green Bay Packers, the LA Clippers - regardless of the weather, the record - those areas are always PACKED. The only time we pack and arena is when there are give-aways and most of them are children. You don’t believe me, look at how the attendance of the Braves has drifted downward this month.
Until we start appreciating and supporting the sport and the players who are playing, we will NEVER hold a championship. Our collegiate teams bring more fans than all of our professional teams. Be real with yourselves - GENTLEMEN!!!

I moved here 12 yrs ago and thought I could never be a Falcons fan and now love them so maybe there’s hope for the Hawks one day. BUT I HATE THEM. I don’t care if Belkin is a good owner or not but I know he’ll fire Knight and NO ONE in the NBA will ever hire him. He’ll be selling vacuums soon enough. I didn’t go to a single game last yr nor will I this year. Even if I got FREE tickets I would pass. The morale is nothing I want to be a part of down there. How can Atlanta be the 3rd worst on a list of potential cities to play in for NBA players when so many already live here? How bad is that?? Billy Knight doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing and even worse is his attitude about it. I just listened to him on a radio interview earlier today and his denial about the direction of this team make me sick. I’m ok with the S.Williams pick despite conceding publicly 2 wks ago that he would take him there. But c’mom, when your coach is so desperate for a PG that he has to publicly demand one and you still pass on Dee Brown who would’ve been a 1st rounder if he came out after his Jr. year and then hurt his knee the summer before his Sr. year and you want to take yet another project. What the f###? Take Dee Brown for crying out loud so you have some insurance if you can’t get someone else. And do we really want Iverson here?? We’ll yeah, now we really need him here and we’ll never get him or anyone else w/o giving up ALOT because EVERYONE knows how desperate we have to be. At least there’s not much break between ACC basketball and MLB so I don’t have to get caught up in the joke that is the Atlanta Hawks. Go ahead and move out of the city. I don’t care anymore.

Black, white, yellow, purple, orange, green, red, blue, silver, maroon… I don’t care what color the players, fans, GM’s or coaches are. How about lets start at the top and get an owner who knows how to run a profesional basketball team and hire competent people that can do their job, and do it well. The bottom line is that the Hawks are 67-179 and no playoffs the last three years. No pun intended but unless the Hawks make some major trades for some guards that can come in and play, I’m not looking “FORWARD” to next year.

after listening to knight on 790 yesterday, all i can say is that he must be borderline nuts.
he made no sense in his defense of drafting 5 straight lottery forwards in 5 years. says a lot about the people that hired him. they must be even more clueless.
